Out somewhere in the wilderness, an egg rustles. A delicate creature, a Sylph is about to be born, very soon now. You will hatch into a world, strange, unknown. Sylphs are born with some good measure of intelligence, and maturate within their cocoon. That doesn’t mean you’re prepared for what may come your way. Can you survive? What goals will you set out to achieve? Friends, enemies, create a legacy of your own?
>>
So many possibilities exist, as you lay dreaming. Quite a lot of slumbering, since the process is detailed. Making sure all the proper memories are in place to function straight from hatching. Even if there’s noise outside, one mustn’t break out early, lest rebirth defects occur.

Even if there’s a LOT of noise. Wow okay that really sounds abnormal. Did you move? Some of these noises are pretty piercing and cringe worthy. Smashing, too. But you’re not ready yet.

Time passes, everything dies down. What was that all about? … probably nothing. You’re running out of energy from the yolk, and your thoughts are aligned properly now. Your body has grown as well as it can in this shell.

It’s time to awaken, now, and find what awaits. The first step is always the hardest.

What kind of creature are you? (and where does thou awaken?)

Magma, heat, energy. There’s so much one can do with that kind of raw force. And how do you recognize all these words anyway, you were just born weren’t you?

The first thing you notice as you emerge is… darkness. This is not outside. Instead you’re in what seems to be a black pit, there’s only one source of light at all-you. Everything begins to brighten as you move, your mere trace putting a blur into the air that lights up the room. There are statues adorning the room, akin to Gargoyles. Most small, but one tall, sitting in an empty fountain. She’s smiling at you. No, wait, she’s just smiling in general, and covered in some kind of red paint.

Turns out there’s a lot of red paint splattered. Something about the fact that it is a forge tells you that while weapons are in place here, they should not be flung around the room haphazardly. As you light up the candles one by one and look around the room, the only exit you notice is a stairwell ascending to a door upstairs.

Your egg is stuffed in a closet, which you conveniently hatched your way out of. You’re going to need that for the Yolk for food, at least until you can find a proper source of food. There’s a lot to concern yourself with.

What’s your first order of business?
>Look for other people or creatures in the surrounding area
>Secure your territory and claim your den
>Go out foraging for food
>Search the interior of the forge for clues/assets

You don’t know how to feel about all of this. Bravery is the act of being scared but not giving in anyway. A smile creeps on your face, and you begin to hum a little tune under your breath. Nothing is going to get the best of this Sylph.

… you are a Sylph, right? You become aware that you don’t quite know what that means. Something to think about later. Maybe once you get a mirror.

As you regard the room, you become aware of a few things. First is that this place is far too big to be a single room, and the stony earthen nature of the walls combine with this to let you deduce that you are somewhere underground. Second is that whatever happened, it happened recently. The arrows on the ground have red paint covered tips, something about that makes you a little queasy. The door isn’t just open, but it’s busted halfway off the hinges, cracked and barely functional.

Least there’s a lot of weaponry around. No food though, as you scavenge around the room, taking this time to examine the other side of the basement. There’s a collection of scribbled notes and books in a chest off in the corner, but you can’t control your heat enough yet to touch them without burning them to a crisp. There’s an empty nest on the other side of the room that you immediately recognize as where your egg SHOULD have been, and indeed it’s way too large for just you.

“Assay Assets.” You state outwards, feeling fairly good about your progress so far. “Weapons, or all shapes and sizes, these empty pools that collect redness, candles, writing from… somebody. Knowledge that I have a family somewhere. A relatively reclusive space where wild predators can’t get to me.”

You’re feeling pretty good, so far at least. Gotta be cautious, and gotta keep moving.

Yeah, it’s probably not close enough for you to actually ‘follow’ anybody that may have been here. Besides, you might accidentally char somebody friendly, or get hunted by somebody that isn’t.

You want a weapon, and you think you might know how to swing a sword around. Thankfully swords are the most common type of weapon. From comically sized Buster Blades to well toned Rapiers, you shuffle up the swords and pile them onto a table. That’s probably for the best to clean for just a minute or two, don’t want to trip on anything.

Now, it’s time to focus on your powers. The obvious thing is to figure out how to modulate your temperature. Immediately a large spray of fire shoots out from your hand skywards. Whoops, good thing this place looks pretty unflammable. You feel your … ‘something’ a little strained, kind of like a muscle after lifting a large weight for a moment.

Now that you can feel it, you can take some time to pulse, explore, figure out what… glands, you’re going to call them glands, can shoot and suppress. That’s some basic heat manipulation down, and you can do it with the rest of your body too to regulate your core temperature.

Bringing your core temperature down feels ‘bad’ though. Like, bone chillingly … chilling. Man you’re bad at wordplay, but this is getting fun, so who cares. Anyway, with your thoughts on this matter, you’ve got some kind of instinct of the other manipulations of your body.

How shall you proceed?

Weapon grasping. Reading papers. Not setting anybody I want to make friends with on fire. Not burning down the shelter, there’s too much to not work with your hands. You look down your body, focusing on just the hands, and notice that the dim glow on your hands fades as you shift the temperature away. Your skin color is… pale. Kinda dark in tone, like granite.

You touch the surface of the nest, which can take the heat, and noticeably changes when heated. This work is calming and meditative, but after a few short minutes you manage to get a segment of the nest where you can touch it and squeeze, without any burning hot handprints.

The print is dusty instead, and you realize you’ve seen this kind of print before when exploring. Somewhere, at least. You make a mental note that you could leave marks or trails, at least if your whole body produces enough ‘char’ for that to work. The energy you’re producing is getting the room to really liven up, you can really see the face of that gargoyle girl-thing as she looks at you even from over here. It really is starting to feel like walking on sunshine.

And you wouldn’t have it any other way. What next?

The prints’ll still be there when we’re done with the fun stuff. For now… you want to make the sparks fly. Magic… magic… what does that even mean. Something, involving raw fabric? Your hands reach out, and you search the area for clues. This place looks like it had other Sylphs like you, at some point. There’s a lot of dried up magma with dim glow in the various little makeshift pools around the area, and especially in your nest. Therefore… maybe…

You can feel something like straining and muscles, but it’s different this time. You’re molding… the air, something burning hot and bright red, it’s so bright that an urge to squint overwhelms you momentarily. You’re not sure why, when you open your eyes it’s just fine to look at, for you anyway.

You continue to drip this magma out of your hands. It actually feels kind of like the texture from the yolk, malleable, you can seemingly swirl it with your thoughts, at least until it gets too far away. You’ve got the stuff confined to the nest though, and some gears suddenly begin to churn.

Also, your stomach rumbles, louder than the gears at the bottom of the nest.

>Investigate the bottom of the best and gears.
>Wow that made me hungry, let’s get some of the yolk we have remaining.

So, you are hungry. Very hungry. Maybe that was the magical equivalent of ‘puking’? That’s… less gross than you’d think it would be, surprisingly enough. Didn’t literally come out of your mouth. Walking is a little more stressful, but not too much. You make it over just fine, easier actually since you don’t have to worry about tripping over weapons.

The closet, it’s been so long since you’ve visited your egg. You’ve spent most of your life away from it now. This is overly dramatic of course, it’s only long compared to your ‘total’ lifespan. In this there’s… quite a bit. Enough to sustain you for quite a while, at least assuming you’re only staying alive and not exerting yourself. It’s not renewable however.

The room itself has actually dimmed, despite your increased use of ‘magic’. Probably not magic, but you like calling it that. The gargoyle’s face looks nice, facing squarely in your direction you can make out the rune on it’s left cheek. The other statues are too little to make out from here. But the dimming is because the initial ‘waking up’ flare is done, and now it’s heated at normal capacity.

Your stomach rumbles again, time to eat, the mere sight in this starving state causes you to facedive without care for decorum. Omnomnomnom. What about after, though?

>See about scavenging for edible stuffs upstairs (write in what you bring with you, if anything)
>Examine Object (Write in what: Ex: find handprints, nest gears, gargoyle statues)

Clarification - does 'wow that made me hungry' lead to that as a complication of magic while other things lead to others? Or are we hungry regardless?
>>

>>
>>44166532
Damnit. I refreshed too. Ugh. Still curious if that's what happened though.

Also, how big are we? Roughly human-size? Smaller? Gigantic?
>>
>>44166472

Going by the scale of the room, you can guess somewhere between five and six feet, presuming that everything else in the room is to a similar scale as one would expect.
>>
>>44166532
Overall, a bit of both. The Sylph was a little hungry before, and got a 'spike' of hunger after that last bit.
>>
>Examine Gargoyle.
>>
>>44166570
Right. Fair enough. So how our magic works is at least fairly defined, in that it burns our own energy?

> See about scavenging for edible stuffs upstairs. Take a dagger, a mid-size (relative to you) axe, and a rapier along the same proportions. That gives a knife for a tool, a slashing weapon, and a thrusting weapon. Should enable us to fight in a variety of conditions we might find indoors. Plus the axe will be good for chopping down doors if we need to or something.

Hold on. Wasn’t that gargoyle thing… looking at the nest? No, it was looking at you when you first came out of the egg, so it was looking over here before. But then…

Ho-kay. Not putting up with this.

You stride over to the gargoyles more, and check them out, grabbing a dagger off the ground that you missed without slowing down. The liveliness in the room is flowing into them just like the other parts of the room. You reach a hand up to the cheek, and as you step to the side, it keeps facing the direction same as before. There’s energy in the not-quite-humanoid-shape however, and as you look around the surface you can definitely see some movement.

You knock on the chest, tilt your head, and blink two times more. “Okay, so, are you alive or not?”

The response of words makes you smile a bit more, the mystery is solved. Least there’s somebody to talk to now.

However… you don’t recognize what it said. It said words, and it is looking directly at you now, but you don’t know what those words are. The unchanging expression isn’t giving you many hints. “Oi, got something I can understand?”

… “y-e-s.”

That sounded like metal gnashing together, did that voice really have to come from that face? Why was that so much worse sounding than the other words?

>See if you can find the ‘unplug’ option.
>Put your hand on the head and liven it up with energy.
>Forget it, go get something to eat.
>Ask it something (write-in)
