Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

[7:30 pm, 4-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

The night air is crisp and fresh. You and Shizuka stand at the edge of the sidewalk. The streets are jam-packed of vehicles and pedestrians, as usual. The apartment blocks and skyscrapers of the city loom ahead in the distance like clusters of concrete pillars, thousands strong. You once watched a documentary about life in the twenty-first century. It said that ordinary people used to live in houses twice as large as the average apartment. They even had their own garage and gardens, too! Unless one was extremely rich, such residences could only be experienced within video games and other media.

You glance at your nee-san. She’s wearing the usual: white shirt, black vest on top that isn’t close to being zipped up, black jeans and a grey coat tied around her waist. She never puts on that coat, even when it’s snowing outside. Apparently she thinks it’s cool? She’s being doing that ever since she entered the Anti-Shadow Operatives and you don’t think you’ll ever understand her fashion sense.

She’s also wearing a bra. Thank god for that. You can tell because you can see some of fabric underneath her shirt.

“Time to go.”

The little man flashes green and the crowd surges forward. You are caught in a throng of tired businessmen, night school students and weary fast food servers. You and your sister step onto the other side and walk down the street, in direction of Moon East’s largest shopping strip.

She suddenly strikes up a conversation upon passing a small supermarket. “Hey Takashi, what made you suddenly decide to train with me?”

“Pardon?”

“What made you want to exercise?”

You look at her. “Does it matter?”

“I am curious about it. I remember offering to help you exercise, because every growing child needs that to some extent. You would either make up and excuse or not do it or try to and give up half-way. The last time I asked you I think was…around nine months ago? I had pretty much given up by that point. It was unhealthy of you, but there didn’t seem like much I could do to convince you.”

“People change, nee-san.” You grumble. “Also, didn’t I join my school’s martial arts club last month? This shouldn’t be too surprising to you.”

“Oh, I don’t mind, Takashi! In fact, I’m quite happy! I’m more than willing to help you get fit. But what changed your mind?” Shizuka asks.

“Well…”

For a brief moment, you’re tempted to tell Shizuka everything. About AETHER, the Blackened Void, rescuing your friends and fighting Shadows. The sensation vanishes as quickly as it arrived. The consequences are clear and you know them all too well. The fact that you’re not sure how Shizuka would exactly react, with her being a government agent and all, only reinforces your desire to clamp your mouth shut.

You consider telling your reasons for training with her are a secret. It’s not technically a lie. Though if you said that, Shizuka would keep prodding you until you finally caved in and made up some bullshit excuse that you know would come back to bite you in the ass.

So you say this, “I’ve been training by myself and thought I could use the help. You’re the expert here.”

“That’s true.” Shizuka says. “But it doesn’t explain why you started training in the first place.”

“Um…”

“Well, I’m sure you have your reasons. I’m glad you started in the first place, so you can wait until you’re ready, Takashi.”

“Fine, how about this? I was an ordinary before, so I didn’t see much point.” Even an E- ranked Persona-user is considered to be superhuman. “Now that I’ve Awakened, I guess I feel like I have a responsibility to get stronger. Especially considering the school I’m going to.”

You and your sister continue to walk.

“So Takashi, what you want to train in?”

“You mean what I want to work on today?”

“I want to know your priorities. Every good exercise regime needs a plan. I’ll help you make it. So, what do you want to start off on?”

“Ippon-Datara is a physical Persona, so I think I should work on my muscles.” You say. You remember Takauji chatting to you about this. The one way anyone can become stronger, whether they be an ordinary or an Awakened, is by increasing their muscle mass. He said that learning techniques is important, but you need training to use them whenever you want. It’s certainly vital for hand-to-hand combat, which is what you are learning.

“Good idea.” Shizuka pounds her fist onto her other palm. She smiles. “Kaa-san was one of the best in her school at Chi Casting, so I think I’ll teach you a little about Persona Augmentation. How does that sound?”

“Good, I guess?”

“Alright, let’s hurry up! The gym isn’t far from here…”

You arrive at a fitness complex further down the road. It’s nowhere near as large as the one the Inter-House Spring Sports Competition took in, but Shizuka seems to know the place well. She waves hello to the receptionist, paying for a session for two adults, and takes you to the weights room. It smells of sweat and protein shakes. Racks of dumbbells are lined up in the corner. Creaks of exercise machines whine through the room. Only a few people are working out at this time of night.

“Okay, we’re here! Takashi, strip down to your T-shirt. You’ll get hot otherwise.”

You do as instructed.

“You’re only a beginner, so we’ll take it lightly. We’ll see how you go on push-ups, weight lifting and pull-ups.”

“Uh-huh…”

“So drop and give me twenty!”

“Wait, what?”

“Push-ups! Do twenty push-ups! You do know how to do them, right?”

“I think I do, but I’m not sure if I can do twenty…”

“You won’t know if you don’t try!” Shizuka’s optimism is blinding. Sighing, you can down on all fours and prepare to exercise…

Pushups. A way of building up your pectorals, triceps and muscles in your upper body. You spread your arms to shoulder-width and lower your body to just before your arms hit the floor. You do this twenty times, as instructed. It’s…surprisingly easy. Your body feels light like a feather. You barely break a sweat. Nee-san drags you over to the weight rack and a horizontal steel bar. You spend the next fifteen minutes lifting 5 kilogram weights and doing fifteen pull-ups.

“That was easy.” You comment.

>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 5 points!

Shizuka nods. “What I just told you to do would be challenging for an ordinary boy, but you’re a superhuman now.” She gives you a sheepish grin. “I guess I sort of forgot that.”

You extend your arms and look at your muscles. In the past, they were thin as twigs, fitting of a boy who spent his days indoors surfing the Internet. Now they’re definite weight to them. Even though they’re nothing compared to your nee-san’s girth, you can’t help but grin a little. Looks like all that mine fighting Shadows and sparring against Takauji has paid off.

It feels great to know you’ve gotten stronger.

“I’ll have to increase your workload.” Shizuka mutters.

“Bring it on, nee-san. I’m ready.”

Shizuka then gives a smirk fitting of the mountain deity Zaou-Gongen himself. You gulp and take a step back. “Then, you won’t complain if I ask you to do more than double of the previous, right?”

“…what?”

“Fifty push-ups, thirty lifts on each arm with the 10kg weights, forty pull-ups. Let’s see you do that!”

“Oh god.”

“At least I’m not tying weights to you. That’ll come much later. I might even sit on you. Now, get moving!”

By the end, you are drenched in sweat and can barely move.

After taking the biggest swig of water in your entire life, Shizuka takes you to the Persona training rooms. When magic came into the world, scientists tried to find ways to recreate its effects. The walls and floors here are made out of a special material that resists Persona attacks. The Battlegrounds at your school are made out of the same material, if you recall correctly.

“Chi casting isn’t a martial art in itself, it’s more of a method that Persona-users use to improve their combat capability. It can increase physical damage, stun foes, boost resistance against attacks and more. Kaa-san mixed it in with Chinese kenpo. I use it with my wrestling and judo techniques.” Shizuka lectures. You sit cross-legged on the mat, listening intently. “The trouble is you have to become decent at Persona augmentation to start learning it.”

“And I haven’t reached that level, right?”

“No, you haven’t.” Shizuka says. “You need to be, at the very least, D-ranked in Magic Potential to begin.”

She then smiles. “But that’s why I’m here. To teach you. Persona augmentation is difficult, but I believe you can do it. There are multiple ways of training your magic. Which one do you want to start off with?”

“I want to learn Persona augmentation directly.” You state.

“Starting off hard, eh?” Shizuka asks, “What can you do, Takashi?”

“I make fireballs, like this.” You say, conjuring flame in your palm. “I think I can make fists stronger, too.”

“Can you smash rocks?”

“I…don’t know.” You've punched Basalt Shadows, but you can't tell her that.

She thinks for a moment. “We don’t have any rocks here, so we don’t have to wait. That’s an Agi spell, isn’t it? Can you do Maragi or Agilao?”

“Celeste can. I can’t.”

“Okay.” She thinks again, then snaps her fingers. “Magic isn’t my strong suit, but I can pull off a simple Bufula. Casting a Tier-2 spell is like casting a Tier-1 spell, but with greater intensity and focus. You need to make your flame burn stronger while also preventing it from spilling outwards and going up your entire arm. It’s good that you’ve seen your friend cast Agilao. Create an image of the spell in your head and then try to cast it.”

“What if I fail?” You ask. “I don’t think I can learn Agilao in a day.”

“You’ll get a grasp on the basics. That’ll be enough. Now, go for it!”

You sigh and squeeze your magic into your right hand. The flame is growing brighter and brighter. It quavers, threatening to devour your arm. It’s a good thing you’re only wearing a T-shirt. You grit your teeth and attempt to control it…

You manage to control the intensity for the flame. Mostly, that is. At the last second, it wrenches free of your command and explodes outwards. You instinctively scramble back. A second later, a harsh, screeching sound fills the room. Ice has covered your palm and the space around you. Shizuka has a finger pointed in your direction. Her Persona Kali is nowhere to be seen.

“Not bad for a first attempt.” She grins. The ice shatters and melts. “Let’s keep going.”

You spend the night practicing Persona augmentation with your sister. You get some usage out of Pulinpa and Mudo as well. But at the end you still couldn’t fully learn Agilao.

Well, you’ll just have to keep trying.

You rinse yourself off in the gym showers and head back towards the entrance. Shizuka is waiting there, leaning against the wall. She waves you over. “Hey Takashi, check this out.”

She tosses a plastic card. You catch it. “What’s this?” You ask.

“You look like you’re determined to get better, so I organized a weekly gym subscription for you.” She replies. “You can come here whenever you like, seven days a week! Isn’t that great?”

“In that case, I won’t let you down.”

“Big words, Takashi! But somehow I get the feeling you can back them up.” She puts her hands on her hips and laughs. “Who knows, one day you might even surpass me! Wahahaha, that’ll be the day!”

You smile. “You never know, nee-san. Didn’t kaa-san say something similar to you back then?”

“She did!” Shizuka sighs fondly. “Though I only wanted to beat her to join the Anti-Shadow Operatives. Takashi, if you really are serious about surpassing me, then you’re going to have to work very hard. I’ll be waiting, though!”

It’s a pleasant night. The two of you exit the gym. You can tell that Shizuka had lots of fun today. So did you. You feel as if you have grown closer to your nee-san…

Do you know the worst part of all of this? I've come up with an idea for a new quest. I spent all of last night thinking about it and now I'm kinda tired.

Probably won't run it for a while, if at all.

Going to take a short lunch break, hopefully won't take too long.

No need to vote further. I've already decided to make the thread. Truthfully, I only needed like thirteen or fifteen votes. I got around twenty-four, which was nice. But it also makes me a little sad that HBQ can't entertain these readers any longer.

The thread will be made once a certain point in P2129 has been reached and I finish typing it up. Please be patient!

>>44234124

The quest I have in mind would be more lighthearted and humorous in tone (kinda like HBQ, actually) and less mechanics-heavy.

Don't expect to see it in the near future, though.

[Five years ago…]

The sky is cloudy and overcast. Light flecks of rain descend from the gray blanket of clouds, soaking the city and its residents. Somewhere in District 7, a bus screeches to a halt. The wheels plough through a puddle near the kerb, sending water splashing across the sidewalk. You, the eleven year old Takashi Wakui, hop out and face your destination.

It’s the Thirteen Residents Crematorium, one of many vertical cemeteries inside Akumachi City. One of the most reliable, according to word of mouth. Tall, snow-colored, square and with a miniature garden at the front entrance. The manager must have dropped a lot of cash on decorating the place. Some of those potted plants look naturally grown.

You enter. An electronic self-help desk greets you. The hologram of a bald man dressed in Buddhist robes appears. “How may I help you, visitor?” It drones.

“I’m here to visit a relative.” You reply.

“The Halls of Resting are located on the third, fourth and fifth floors. Please consult the database for the location of your loved one. Thank you and have a nice day…”

The elevator ride is short. You pass through the turnstile and step into room lit up by thousands of cobalt lights. They illuminate walls of glass cinerariums, each one holding the ashes of a dead person. Overpopulation in Japanese cities had made traditional graves a relic of the past. Only the rich could afford to rest in boxes larger than the average toaster. Everyone else was packed in neat little rows and columns, like sardines in the world’s largest tin can.

The place is deserted, aside from a few monks praying at a statue of the Buddha. You swipe your family’s ID card at a scanner. The appropriate box glows gold, then extends from the wall. You spot it in the distance and walk over to it.

The inscription on the brass plate is short and simple. ‘Akira Wakui, wonderful husband and loving father. Gone too soon.’ The man died of cancer in 2119, when you were six. You remember his funeral. Shizuka staring at the body, unable to speak. The pungent scent of the burning incense. A priest, reading out sutras that your young mind couldn’t understand. Your mother trying to keep herself composed in front of her children, but to no avail as the dam burst and the tears began to flow freely…

You gulp and open your mouth. “Um…tou-san…hey. It’s been a while. Sorry, nee-san and kaa-san couldn’t come today. It’s just me, your son.”

There are no offerings, not in this day and age. There is no room to place them. You don’t have any money to buy incense. All you can give are your prayers.

“I’m doing fine, I think.” You mutter out loud. “School is going well, my grades are alright, I guess. Still haven’t summoned my Persona, but nee-san thinks it’s only a matter of time. She’s really busy now, thinking about her future career and all that. She can actually keep up with kaa-san now. Maybe she’ll join the Anti-Shadow Operatives once she gets older…”

You shift uncomfortably in your spot. “As for me, I still don’t know what I want to do. It’s all kinda confusing. I’m not too worried, there’s a lot of time and I’ve only just started middle school. Um…”

The air is cold. You can’t help but shiver.

“Yeah, my health is fine. Haven’t been sick in a while. Kaa-san is always pressuring me to put on the right clothes. Whatever, it’s no big deal.”

It might not have been the best idea to come alone.

“So, that’s all I guess. I don’t know what else to say. Um, wherever you are, I hope you’re doing fine. We all miss you, nee-san especially. Have a good rest and I’ll see you later…”

You turn around and head for the entrance. Sensing the lack of presence, the glass box slides back into its compartment. All is quiet.

“I’m back.” You say to absolutely no-one, because Shizuka is right behind you.

You trudge up to your room and put your jacket back into its closet. God, does that bed look inviting. If it weren’t for commitments like brushing your teeth and taking a shower, you’d collapse onto it and fall straight into the world of dreams.

Then you catch an eyeful of your study books. You recall that you were having a bit of trouble with a few English translations. Then there was that bit about functional programming in your IT homework.

“Dammit…”

Today is Children’s Day. It is a time where families pray for the success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls. The amount of relevance this holds towards you is equivalent to the number of human beings currently bearing the World Arcana.

That is to say, zero.

You wonder what your mother is doing. Working hard as usual, you bet. She hasn’t you a text or anything. In the past, she would take you and Shizuka to other parts of Japan. That stopped when Shizuka left high-school and became serious about her future.

Those trips were fun, if a little tiring. You miss them.

You remember that exams take place tomorrow, from the 5th to the 8th. Maybe it would be a good idea to prepare…

You go to bed early that night. You have dreams…about nothing at all. Pure, simple blackness the instant you shut your eyes. None of your Personas wearing fetish outfits, no infuriating and smug twins from the Velvet Room spouting abuse at you, nothing about Celeste or the other girls you know. Your sleep is comforting and peaceful.

[7:00 am, 6-Apr-2129 (FRIDAY)]

You awaken to the sound of chirping birds and busy traffic. For once, your head isn’t pounding as if a construction crew had taken up residence within your own skull. You get dressed quickly, brush your teeth and eat some breakfast. After bidding your sister goodbye, you step outside and head straight off to school.

The trains are packed with nervous students, most of which aren’t dressed in the same uniform as you. Some are fidgeting in their seats, others are busily reading notes off tablets and personal computers. A few guys have dark circles underneath their eyes. They must have tried to cram the night before. What a stupid idea. They would pay for their foolishness in the days to come.

The gates of Akumachi-Kirijo loom before you, like the very entrance to Yomi. You gaze around the front entrance. The tension is thick in the air. The sparks of determination and competition are flying everywhere, igniting the embers of hundreds of rivalries. Expressions range from smug confidence to hardened resolve and everything in between. Books are out, passages are recited and questions are fired at fellow classmates.

Though it is only the midterms, it is nevertheless a critical moment to student body. Once the exams are over and the marks tallied and ranked, the hierarchy of power will shift. The members Elite Twelve will surely change. Just about everyone is out to make a name for themselves. They are eagerly anticipating the commencement of this new trial.

You clench your fist and grin.

“Morning, Takashi-kun!” Celeste sprints up to you, clutching her bag and smiling. “Nice day, isn’t it?”

“I hope you realize we’re going to spend most of it inside a classroom.” You mutter. “You’re right though.”

Celeste’s eyes are alight with the flames of war. “Or maybe this cute Magician girl might burn away everything until she’s the last girl standing. Really now, Takashi-kun, it could go either way.”

“We’ll just have to see, won’t we?” You shrug your shoulders.

“You have never beaten me in English, Takashi-kun.” Celeste says.

“And you’ve never beaten me in maths.” You shoot back.

The two of you stare at each other. Somewhere in the distance, the wind blows.

“Hee hee hee.” Celeste takes the lollipop from her mouth and points a finger at your chest. “Thanks, Takashi-kun. I’m all fired up now!”

You pump a fist in her direction. “We’re in this together. I’m determined not to lose to you, but good luck nonetheless!”

She strides forward and brushes her own first against yours. Two pairs of knuckles bump against each other. “Then, Takashi-kun, may the best student win!”

Humans Conscious and subconscious actions corrupted demons and god himself, transforming the subconscious sea into a chaos warp hell where there are only EXTREMES Ideals except for a select few who are in the middle.

It's either turn every human into beings that can understand and conprehend themselves and others that everything will go alright.

Your exams are not until a bit later. You decide to head down to the school cafeteria to get a snack or two. A couple of your classmates have been talking about how great the menu is and you can’t help but feel a little curious. Normally you bring your own lunch (that is, leftovers from last night) so you don’t get to eat there all that often.

You pass through the cafeteria doors and…

“What the hell?”

This is completely outside your expectations.

“Okay, it’s go time! Here I go, guys!”

“Piss off! Out of the damn way!”

“Who the hell pushed me? Come here so I can sock you one!”

“No, not the fizzy sticks!”

The area in front of the counter is congested with dozens—no, at least a hundred students surrounding the vendors, belting out orders. The number of staff has doubled, with a few helper androids thrown into the mix. Yet even they are having a trouble time keeping up with all the ravenous students. You stand at the back, wondering exactly what the hell is wrong with these people. One guy tries to dive headfirst and is promptly thrown against the wall for his trouble. The noise is deafening.

“Crazy, isn’t it?”

You look to the side. Yoshino Sagisawa is there, a bottle of water and an egg and ham sandwich in her hands. It’s a little unnerving about how calm she is about the chaos.

“It’s always like this. The final exams at the end of year are even worse.”

“Senpai, are people really that desperate for snacks?” You ask.

“It’s superstition. You know people are these days. There once was a student council president who achieved the best results by eating ice-cream before every exam.” Yoshino says. “I think the idea that you'll do well if you ate before exams came from that.”

“Eriko Ozaki?”

“No, Eriko prefers yogurt.” Yoshino smiles. “That president was from thirty years ago. She would be an adult by now.”

What makes YHVH different from Odin or Brahman? They are all born from human subconscious and mythos.

Just that Judeo-christian worship is quite a bit more prevalent in human society than the others, making YHVH's forces a fair bit stronger.

Still a demon though.

Thats why Polytheistic Gods are teaming up against him. SMT 4 Final get hype!.

“Huh…” You eye the crowd one more time. More and more people are shouting.

“A man’s hunger is no match for his raging spirit! Watch me, Kanade!” Ah, it’s Takauji.

“What are you doing? It’s a stampede in there! You’re going to get crushed. Here, you can have…have…ah…oh, forget it! Do what you want!” That’s definitely Kanade.

“Sorry, what was that?” Takauji again.

“Excuse me, could I have a meat bun and a bottle of orange juice, please?” Is that the student council vice-president? Wait, is the crowd parting for her?

You look back at Yoshino. “Are you going to get anything?”

“Oh no no no!” Yoshino waves her hands around, frantic. “I’m too frail for that. Besides, I already have my meal right here.”

“B-ranks aren’t what I’d call frail, senpai…”

This may not be the smartest idea you’ve had all day. The curry is infernally hot as usual. The mere act of looking at its vapors is like pouring a bottle of hot sauce into your eyes. It’s delicious and you know that, but you’re not sure if your tongue can survive it without being reduced to dust and ashes.

If you survive this, then your parameters will improve. You’ll also do better on the exam, knowing that you managed to surpass one of the deadliest meals known to the student body.

But if you fail…

You swallow.

You know there is no choice. This is the grave you dug. Now you have to lie in it.

Goodbye, cruel world!

“Thanks for the meal!”

“Ugh…agh…oh my god…” Your intestines are full of hellfire. The skin is peeling off your lips. Your tongue is both numb and screeching with pain at the same time. This is how Izanami must have felt when Hinokagutsuchi burned her alive.

“Shit…water…” You down the complimentary bottle of water and then shovel the rest of the rice into your mouth. The spiciness fades, a little. It still feels as if the insides of your mouth have been replaced with a metalworks furnace.

“Are you alright?” Yoshino rushes over. “Do you need any help?”

“Gah…no, I’m fine, senpai. That was such a bad idea.”

“Of course it was! Why were you eating the curry of all things before the exam? Did you have a suicide wish? Here, let me take you over to the drink tap…”

You enter Class 5-3. The tension surrounding the student body is at stretching point. One wrong move and everything will go up in smoke and explosions. The teachers understand this and are acting even more ruthlessly than usual. They round up the students into their classrooms, barking orders.

“Read your seat number. Enter the classroom. Sit down and do not talk to anybody. Do not flip over the paper until instructed. Do not touch any stationary. Punishments will be severe. Reading time will commence in fifteen minutes.”

You tune out Veleis-sensei’s droning and scratch your memory. Words, numbers, paragraphs and dates float around the center of your mind. Some are hazy, like the windows in on a very snowy day. Others are as clear as the crystals in a dragon’s horde.

You have seven subjects. They will be taken in the following order: Japanese, Mathematics, History, English, Mythology, Politics/Economics, Computer Programming/Information Technology.

>>Takashi: Contemplate on how you studied so far.
>In the beginning, you had +15 to Maths, +0 to English and +7 to all other subjects.
>You then decided to allocate your study sessions as such: 20% to English, 15% to Mythology, 15% to History, 15% to Politics/Economics, 15% to IT, 15% to Japanese, 5% to Maths.
>Thus you gained +7 to English, +5 to Mythology, +5 to History, +5 to Computing, +5 to Politics/Economics, +5 to Japanese, +3 to Maths.
>You gained +1 to all subjects from studying with Takauji and Kanade.
>You gained +2 from studying late into the night.
>You gained +2 from studying late into the night…again.
>You gained +0.5 from studying on your own.
>You gained +0.5 from becoming determined at the front gates with Celeste.
>You lost -5 to Japanese from eating the curry. Thank god it didn’t escalate further.

>This brings you to…

You wonder how Celeste is doing. If you had to hypothesize, it would be…

>+10 to Maths, +50 to English, +15 to Mythology, +20 to History, +15 to Biology, +20 to Geography and +13 to Japanese.

“Reading time commences now.” Veleis-sensei announces. “You may now open your books and commence reading. You must not use pens or mark the paper in any way until the time is up…”

The Japanese exam consists of three sections. Grammar and punctuation, context essay writing and language analysis. You gulp as you eye the questions. The paper is barebones, but the amount of lines they have given you is truly staggering.

A bead of sweat trickles down the side of your neck. You’re uncertain whether it’s from the stress or the curry.

Fifteen minutes pass.

“Reading time is over. You may now commence writing. Good luck, everyone!”

This exam takes place in the computer labs. You are surrounded by the humming of dozens of desktops. You catch Fumika off in the corner, typing like mad. A few minutes later, she clicks once on her house and then shuts down her machine. Christ, she’s already done! She’s a monster at this!

There are five parts: Multiple choice, short answer, algorithm analysis, coding and debugging. The language is Scala++. Everything is done virtually; there are no pens and papers to be found.

“Which is faster on average: quick sort, merge sort or heap sort?”

“How would you optimize this program?”

“What is the critical area of this algorithm?”

“Write a program that converts ASCII to base nine.”

“Locate all the errors in this program and remove them. Comment your corrections as you go. Failure to do so will result in no marks.”

[4:30 pm, 9-Apr-2129 (MONDAY aka AFTERNOON OF THE LAST DAY)]

Destination: one of Akumachi-Kirijo’s many grass lawns. You are collapsed on one, staring up at the afternoon sky. God, it feels so good to breathe in the fresh air. A crow flies up and away from your line of sight. You exhale and drink in that sweet ambrosia of victory.

“I failed, damn it.” Takauji moans next to you, weeping waterfall tears. “This sucks, man.”

“Oh, quit being such a baby.” Kanade scolds. Unlike you and Takauji, she’s actually sitting with her knees pressed to her chest. “You did fine on English, didn’t you? Next time, study earlier and harder!”

“Kanade, I am never ignoring you again.”

“That’s what you said last time as well!” She sighs, shaking her head and muttering something about martial art fanatics and their sweaty sports equipment. She then directs her attention towards you.

“What’s up?” You ask.

“Not too bad, I say.” Kanade replies. “Aced maths and history, chemistry didn’t go down too well. Everything else was fine. So Takashi, how did you go?”

“I think I did pretty well.” You grin at your friends. “I wasn’t good at exams in the past, so this is a nice change of pace.”

“You saying you did a complete one-eighty?” Takauji asks. “What happened, Takashi?”

You shrug. “A lot of things. But man does it feel good to know you have you succeeded!” Even if it mean hunching over your desk, head bent down so low that your eyeballs almost touched your pen. Or wolfing down dinner every day to go and review the exams for tomorrow.

In the end, the effort was worth it. I worked you down the bone to the point you almost became a skeleton, but you think your results speak for themselves.

“I agree.” You and Kanade do of a hi-five that only fellow aces of exams could pull off. “Of course, if you try your absolute hardest, then you shouldn’t have any regrets. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for someone here…” Her voice goes dark at the last second.

“Give me a break, Kanade!” Takauji whines. “I’m already covered in wounds. Stop pouring more salt!”

“I’m going to verbally abuse you until you get better grades, Koyoura!” Kanade shouts. “It’s my responsibility as class president!”

“Can’t you let go of our responsibility for one day?”

“No!”

You laugh as Takauji and Kanade engage into another squabble. Those two are like an old married couple. They complement each other well.

You hear the grass rustling. Somebody is approaching. You lift yourself off the ground and turn around.

“Hey, Celeste.”

“Takashi-kun! How were your exams?”

“They went good.” You reply as she takes a seat next to you. “What about you?”

She winks and sticks her tongue out. “You’ll just have to find out, hee hee hee!”

“Ah, c’mon…”
>>
You relax on the grass with your friends. Takauji and Kanade have stopped arguing and are chatting about the best type of frozen yogurt available nearby. The sun is beginning to set. It’s almost time to go home. You are about to grab your bags and ask Celeste if she wants to walk home when she grabs your arm.

“Wait, Takashi-kun.” She says. “I’ve got something I want to tell you.”

“What?” You ask.

“Well, that’s…” She trails off and glances downwards. She begins fidgeting with her fingers. “Ah, I’ve never done this before so I don’t know the proper way. Calm down Celeste, you can do this. It’s just a single sentence, after all…”

>“Spit it out already.”
>Remain silent and let her finish.

Well, now that exams are over we'll be going to clubs again, so we'll be able to grind Charisma and Understanding in Drama Club. We'll also probably get Willpower to the next rank by the end of the week from going to Martial Arts Club and the gym. That would free up some time to read Thinking Big.

You decide to remain silent and let her finish. Her face turns a little pink and her fingers are now tangled up in each other. She squeezes her eyes shut, then slams them open. She takes a couple of deep breaths and looks to be on the verge of spilling a mountain of words out of her mouth.

She opens her mouth and then closes it again. By now, she’s gotten the attention of Takauji and Kanade. The two stare at each other, confused.

“Yo, Tachibana, right? You feeling okay?”

“I’m fine!” Celeste replies, hasty and not at all there.

“Give her space, Takauji.” Kanade remarks. “She needs it.”

“Ah, whatever!” Celeste leaps to her feet, puffing mad. “Screw Kanami’s instructions, I’ll do it right now!”

She then points her finger down at you. It’s like you are staring into the holy judgment of God himself. You blink, questioning. The temperature in the air is rising. With the biggest smile you’ve ever seen on her face, she shouts the following line.

“Takashi Wakui! I, Celeste Tachibana, challenge you to a duel!”

THREAD FINALLY OVER, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. Exam rolls worked better than I thought they would. Semester 1 Midterms are babby tier though. Increase your INTELLIGENCE in preparation for the Semester 1 finals!

New thread will be...tomorrow! It will most likely be a short one. 10:30 pm UTC as usual, hope to see you all there!

I'm going to assume Takashi accepts Celeste's challenge. Unless you want otherwise.

Eeeyup. Same rules as swimming contest.
How much of a stat boost will we get for acing this thing?

We really won't need to we resist fire with Ippon Datara and can smack her face in with it, while she tries to burn our ass. Our basic is a really crappy match for her really.

Indeed.

>>44239708
That's assuming the duel will involve magic. She might be challenging us to a purely physical duel, in which case we'd have a problem dealing with the improved reach her sword gives.

Competition is her life so if we want to win its a good chance of it happening. Besides her flimsy defense can't stop our hammering blows! If we want to go the extra mile we can pin and grapple her too.

>>
>>44239958
>>44239967
Like I said get in close and hammer her with our solid blows while denying her reach with her blade. We're heavier and lost longer than her so pin her beneath us and let loose until she submits. Her best chance to retaliate is resisted.
>>
>>44239937
Nice bait, here is your reply.
>>
>>44240054
The main risk is going to be if she can keep out of range of us. She's got Dia and Rakukaja, so if she can kite us she'll be able to keep the fight going long and possibly win by making it a battle of attrition. Meanwhile, we have no support skills that we can use publicly. So we're going to have to end the fight fast if we want to win. Hitting her early with Pulinpa so that she can't focus will help a lot.
>>
We'll win for sure, Ippon-Datara resist fire.
>>
>>44240238
She's got Fire Boost and Agilao. Even with resisting fire, she'll be able to do a fair bit of damage to us.
>>
>>44240122
I think alot of it will come down to, "Do you want to do this publicly or privately?"
If it is private she would need to pull hard to win. We are a Wildcard, so if we can use our full array we will likely win.

If it is public thought don't you think she will feel any victory will seem Pyrrhic? We should tell her that our main persona doesn't grow anywhere near as fast as ones should, its a facet of our power as a Wildcard. Admit that we aren't the kind of man who wants to rely on something we simply lucked into to to be the strong. So ask if she would face us with our full range of powers "off the record"; in private. Because if she is serious about being the best, or just HER best, there are people far, far greater than us even with our gift.
