Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, finished his rescue mission, discovered Island orcs had captured a Cerilian diplomat and successfully tapped into the powers of his bloodline. He now sleeps, preparing to take on a new day.

Your eyes open to the sound of birds chirping and the light of the sun shining through your window. You look over to see Ed still sound asleep in his own bed. You made your discovery at around two in the morning so it's about six right now. You quickly settle into your required hour of prayer. Just as you finish communing with The Great Will, Ed gets up and starts studying his spellbook. You say hello before you sit down at the table next to him and the two of you relax into a nice silence as you look over your respective tomes.

You only have three spells written down in the thing, but you're very new to trying to gleam information and re-orienting yourself with the sketches and steps you've illustrated. While Ed goes from spell to spell, rapidly reacquainting himself with moves he's practiced and performed for months, it takes you thirty minutes just to remember the complicated procedure to get the grease spell to work.

All in all, it's a lot like working out. But for your brain rather than your muscles. Like an actor who must memorize his lines for an up-coming play. Some parts are easy and memorable, others are quite tricky and will be for awhile. After an hour passes by and the both of you have succeeded at warming up your minds, you head down to the second floor to grab breakfast. (1/3)
>>
As you bite into your sandwich, you think about your new life. This is the end of your third week on the Island. A lot has happened in the past two months. You're an adequate sorcerer, a novice wizard, you have a modicum of access to the divine as well as some training in martial arts. Although it'll probably plateau soon, you've really been skyrocketing in terms of new skills. You've paid your way into both the Fighter's Guild and the Circle of Mages, you've become a reliable agent of Blackburn's and your group has some small measure of renown in Seaside. You've made an enemy or two, from helping out Father Calloway. And, other than Dolah and Gabby's personality conflicts, you've all become friends with each other.

You also have moved forward in your own personal journey quite a fair bit with this change of scenery. Finding your faith again after having lost it with the death of your friend Tobias. Forgiving yourself for some of the things you've done in defense of your country. Deciding to focus on your next objective rather than freeze up dwelling on the past.

You reflect on your conduct here. Every hard-hearted decision you've felt forced to make accompanied by a merciful one. Execute the kobolds, negotiate with the lizardfolk. Kill Harnost in cold blood to ensure Calloway's safety. Execute the orcs, save Paul and Macarn. You're not a saint by any stretch of the imagination, but you act as best as you're allowed. And you still feel the power of the Great Will coursing through you, so he hasn't decided to stop backing you yet. That's a confidence booster. (2/3)
>>
“So,” Ed pierces the natural silence. “You're a wizard now too. That's, uh, neat.” You nod. “Honestly, that might be a big enough accomplishment to earn your membership for next year if you're able to write a thesis on how you synthesized the two.” That doesn't sound fun, but it beats spending 1000 gold. “You'll probably make it to mage status.” You look at him quizzically.

“Oh, you probably weren't told anything about the ranks either, were you? So, acolyte is you, me and anybody who've recently joined. We're the bottom rung, about sixty altogether. Next up is your mages. They're anyone who has had their membership fee waived for adding something of worth to the Circle or 'the magical community' which is essentially just the Circle. Maybe thirty of them. They take up the fifth floor. Then you have your Circle Magisters. They're the elite spell casters and only the Archmage herself can raise you to that rank. They get to have a vote in the Circle's policies. Currently there is only ten of them and they live on the sixth floor. Archmage gets an entire floor to herself. And, uh, that's it.”

As the two of you chat, you notice that aide of Blackburn's approach your lunch table. You look up at him expecting this to be some sort of message for you. Your expectations are quickly dashed as he turns to Ed.

“Blackburn is offering a payment of fifty gold to any Seaside inhabitants with Orcish blood willing to donate some for study at the Research Library.” Before Ed can really respond the aide nods to the both of you and heads out of the room. Ed quickly glances around the place to see if anybody paid attention to what just happened. Nope, the anti-social magic junkies have their noses in their books, oblivious to the real world.

“Well, I guess I'm doing that now. Have a nice day Alan.” Ed gets up and smoothes down his coat.

Well, you have the room to yourself and you still haven't finished classically educating yourself about the different schools of magic. You turn your plates in to where they are washed, before heading back up to the fourth floor and settling cozily into your bed with Azdor's tome.

The next school of magic Azdor talks about is Enchantment. This school of magic is focused on the manipulation and control of the minds of other sentient beings. It can make a person believe you're their best friend, their lover or a giant talking elephant if you're good enough. Azdor spends a good portion of this section saying exactly why enchantment is 'woman's magic'. Women are already amazing seducers, manipulators and enchantressess without magic. So it is natural that they combine their natural feminine wiles with the power to alter reality to make men fawn over them. This is why he believes Essentia is such an amazing enchanter. Azdor briefly talks about one of the most basic enchantment spells, which he calls Daze. It clouds the mind of someone particularly weak-willed and disorients them long enough to throw a punch in Flid's face before running away. You write down the basic steps to the daze spell in your spellbook.
>>
He then talks of Evocation. He thinks this is the best school of magic because it kills motherfuckers dead. It is using your massive intellect to bring about forces the puny mundane peons can't imagine to smite them. You wonder what Azdor's focus of magic was. The basic Evocation spell Azdor speaks of is Flare. It is a quick burst of light that can dazzle the unprepared.

Next up is Illusion. Rather than attack the mind directly, this school creates phantom images and figments of the imagination in the world to deceive the senses and the minds of others. While it has a less likely chance to work than enchantment, it can affect a greater amount of people. The example Illusion spell he talks of is Ghost Sound, which creates sound out of thin air to freak people out. You recall that Eve has casted that spell before.

As noon comes about you head downstairs to grab lunch. What next?

You go over to where Eve and Quissonce are sitting down eating lunch, the two of them theory-crafting how to enhance the 'Circle up!' handshake. You tell them to follow you as you grab Dolah from the chapel and meet up with Kyra and Gabby at your table in The Sword and Shield. After grabbing a round of drinks, you begin your meeting.

“So. Rowe's been gone two days now on reconnaissance of this Forest Hunter tribe's village where this Speaker chick is most likely being held. I think it would be good to discuss what we're doing now rather than later. First of all, I think we should gear up today and head out there to meet up with her. The quicker we get out there the faster this happens.” Kyra shakes her head.

“We should wait. Who knows how long she'll need. She'll come back with better information than we have right now.” Gabby chuckles.

“Unless she got caught.” Kyra shakes her head again.

“She won't get caught.” Dolah coughs to grab your attention. (1/2)

“Something else we should discuss here rather than in the field: This isn't a fortress or an army encampment we're hitting. It's a village. It will have women and children. Elderly and the sick. What's our plan to handle that.” Gabby looks at her like it's a no-brainer.

“We don't. It's not our problem, who gives a shit.” Dolah rolls her eyes.

“Actually, if we kill off all their able-bodied men, we're condemning them to death.”

“Then they die. Their fault for backing the wrong side. Besides, they'll just find another tribe.” Kyra speaks up.

“And spread the news that we're killing off entire tribes. Better to, uh, make sure that doesn't happen.” Gabby laughs.

“Eh, let em run and talk. Maybe the next tribe will think twice about fucking with Ceril.” Dolah puts her hands on the table.

“Or, we could take them in as refugees if we set up some sort of temporary housing for them here while we have the time.” Eve butts in.

“And y'know Gilda's going to pay us big money if we bring back some women and children.” After you've all said your pieces, Quissonce speaks up.

“I don't really give a shit.” She shrugs.

“Yeah, we should wait for Rowe. For all we know we'll need more than just the seven of us and we can't make plans on how to conduct ourselves without at least a ground plan of the place. As for the women and children . . .” you sigh “it's best if we bring them back. We leave survivors and word of who we are and what we're doing spreads. Best if any potential vengeance seekers don't have a clue what happened. Of course, we'll need to make sure Blackburn is OK with it. For all we know we don't have the resources to feed and house them.”

Dolah speaks up. “I'll handle that. I don't know if you've noticed, but there aren't any children around here. Setting up an orphanage of some sort should be possible. There are a few buildings that seem to be abandoned or unused in Seaside.” With your meeting concluded you go back to what you all were doing. Which is drinking. What's next on your agenda?

You finish your ale and make your way down to the Fighter's Guild, waving goodbye to the rest of your compatriots. You weave through side streets until you find the place and quickly enter, spotting Gale showing a few newbies how to tie a proper knot. You patiently wait for him to finish before approaching him as he watches over their struggles to prove themselves capable of taking prisoners. When they fail, and he shows them how their prisoner could easily escape and cut their throats in their sleep, he tells them that is why they should just kill their enemies and stop focusing on the whole 'taking people alive' thing.

As the newbies go back to whatever they were doing before, Gale turns to you and motions for you to give him a second. He goes into a back room that seems to be where he sleeps. He strips off his armor and then locks his door, coming back out.

“So, it's going to be easier for you to learn this if you take off the breastplate. You'll be able to keep up with me and run longer.” You follow his advice and then exit the front of the Fighter's Guild and stretch.

The two of you take off, jogging briskly through the roads of Seaside. As you move he gives you tips on how to pace yourself and how often you should run to keep up your skills. He tells you about proper feet placement and how to hold yourself to reduce the wind resistance you catch. When you make it to the beach he breaks off into his fastest sprint, telling you to try and keep up. (1/2)

It is ridiculous how fast this guy can move. He speeds forward, his feet pounding into the sand, kicking up trails of it in his wake. You fall behind quickly, watching his backside as he quickly gains a great lead on you.

You quickly think to yourself. He hasn't said anything about how he sprints like that, but you think you can figure out how he did it. Apply all the technique he's using and then focus on pushing all the strength you can muster directly into the soles of your feet. A lot like magic actually. Except it isn't some arcane power, instigated by your blood. It's a natural wild abandon for the limits of your body. Fuck it. Time to go all out.

You rush after Gale as fast as you can. He's still gaining a lead on you. However, after five minutes of maintaining this sprint as hard as you can you feel the distance between the two of you stagnate. You're now moving just as fast as him. Another five minutes pass and Gale slows down to a resting run to ease his heart rate down. You do the same and come to a stop near him.

“So, you feel like that helped at all.” You exhale in exhaustion. Your feet are killing you and your legs feel like lead, but . . .

“Yeah, actually. Thanks.” You fall back into the sand, resting a bit. You don't think you're going to be able to exert yourself too hard for the rest of the day.

“Well, I'm heading back to The Fighter's Guild. Swing by if you want a lesson in something else sometime.”

You lie in the sand for quite a while, letting the relaxing sounds of the pulsing waves calm you down after the pumping of all that adrenaline. When you finally get up and wash off some of the sand on your legs, you decide to deal with that magical helm you found on your first excursion outside Seaside. You now know some things about magic that might let you determine what it does.

As you head back to The Circle where you keep it, you notice the two men trailing you. They're trying a bit to not seem like they're tailing you, but they're just a little too kitted out in town to not garner some attention from you. They've been following you since you left the beach. You aren't wearing your armor and you only have your dagger on you, but they haven't noticed that you noticed they're watching you as you move through Seaside. You're currently walking down the main street, so you're surrounded by foot traffic and guards. They probably won't cause a ruckus right here in the open. And you have no idea who they are. You have some options.

No. Sorry, that isn't how this works. You pull up the hood of your elven cloak up and feel yourself become less noticeable. Better at sneaking. Better at getting the drop on these mooks. You do the necessary incantations. Blurred movement. Expeditious retreat. And zoom, you're off.

You swear, through the sounds of the crowd and the noise of the mid-afternoon bustle you can hear them speak.

“Shit.” They realize that you know their game and give chase. You lead them on for a bit and then quickly bank off into a side street. Absolutely no one around, dark, silent, privacy. Good. You quickly duck yourself behind an empty cart and wait for the idiots to show up.

The two of them rush in, slowing down as they huff, out of breath. They quickly look around and think you've moved far on ahead of them. They're distracted. Focused on their failure and themselves rather than their surroundings.

“Shit, didn't think he'd be such a slippery fucker.” Talking to each other now. Completely oblivious. Weak.

No. Don't kill them. Not yet at least. That's not what Alan would do. Questions first. Time to subdue.

Ghost sound first, cat noises, they look to their right. You come from the left. You place grease right under them, one slips. The other goes for his sword

Flare to his face. You bring your cloak up to shield your own eyes, spinning as you walk forward. It goes off, a flash of bright red in darkness. The two of them shout at the sudden blinding light. Your left hand Dazes the one on the ground, he slips again. You step up to the standing one, covering his face with his off-hand and quickly use a stunning fist on him. He falls to the ground, unconscious. The other one has finally found his footing before you trip him again. This time his head hits the cobblestones. Bleeding, dying. You deftly pick up the marble from your pocket and Stabilize him. Maybe twelve seconds. Sloppy work.
Wait, what? The fuck. “not what Alan would do.” You're Alan. Holy shit, you wrecked these guys pretty badly. Alive, but unconscious. You gingerly step out of the grease pile you've summoned. Well, what are you going to do?

You pick up the bodies and toss them into the empty cart. You throw a dirty blanket you find on the ground on top of them.

You find Gabby and Kyra drinking at The Sword and Shield and tell them what happened. They go to take the cart to the abandoned waterfront warehouse. You then go inform Quissonce, who walks with you while you talk about what happened.

“So you're saying there was a moment where you thought about yourself in the third person?” You shake your head no. That wasn't it exactly.

“It was more like I was somebody else making decisions for me as a person.” Quissonce looks puzzled and take some time to interpret what you've said.

“Do you think you were being mind-controlled? Enchantment magic maybe?” Again, you shake your head.

“No. I didn't feel like I lost control. It's like I was not me but I was making decisions for me in line with how I usually act. Like I was a completely different person with my own morality and beliefs but in this moment I was me and had to act . . . like me?” Quissonce seems very confused. You find the best way to describe it. “It was if I was Kyra, but I had to be Alan.”

Quissonce laughs. “Well, am I talking to Kyra or Alan right now?”

You sigh. “Alan.” This isn't going to get you anywhere. You make it to the warehouse and enter. You see Gabby and Kyra chatting casually.

Gabby waves hello to you two. “Well, deja vu. These guys didn't really need much convincing. They say one of the healers in town paid them to act all shady and follow you. You know which cunt.” Deliria. “I asked if they were planning on killing you and they say they were told just to watch you. Don't know if I believe them, don't really fucking care. Hand them over to Dolah after the Deliria situation has been handled. She can see if they can be redeemed or if we should put them into shallow graves.

Keep them here until the situation with Deliria is resolved. They didn't really do anything against the law but we don't want them informing their employer about our situation.

“Well, let's go chat with Deliria. See why she's having me followed. Maybe we can de-escalate the situation before she gets the wrong idea in her head. We'll tell Dolah to grab these guys after we handle all of that.”

Gabby nods. “These assholes'll keep here alright for half a day. Now, how are we gonna find this Deliria bitch?”

Well, you have an idea. Bartom would probably know where she frequents. And you can pick up some pies on the way. Two birds, one stone. As the four of you exit and walk back up towards The Sword and Shield, you sidle up next to Kyra and watch her intently. She looks at you oddly.

“What?”

“Did anything . . . weird happen to you today?”

“Other than this moment right here, no.” Well this avenue of investigation seems stunted.

You sidle up next to Quissonce. You think about how best you can tell her about your weird ability you discovered while tapping into your bloodline. But, you don't exactly know what it does yourself. So you just decide to use it on her to show her. You focus some of the power pumping through your veins into your finger and you poke Quissonce in the side.

She flinches and grabs herself and looks at you, offended. “What was that for, Alan.” You shrug.

“I think it's a new power of mine.”

“Poking people is your new power?”

You squint at her, examining her for any change. “You don't feel any different?” (1/2)

She scoffs. “I feel annoyed. That's different . . . from . . bef –” she trails off as she stops walking, looking like she's very deep in thought. You stop and look at her staring off into space. Gabby and Kyra notice a few seconds later and stop walking forward themselves. Did you just break Quissonce? You walk up and wave your hand in front of her face. She snaps out of whatever daydream she was having. She quickly sputters before apologizing. “Sorry. Sorry. Just, um, I think I have to go. Good luck with the threatening to beat people up thing or whatever.” She gathers her equipment together and then rushes off towards the Circle. You should probably investigate that later.

You make it to Bartom's table and buy yourselves a couple meat pies, throwing in an extra gold for information on where Deliria is at the moment. Bartom tells you she usually drinks in The Drunken Lion these days. Gabby comments about how of course Deliria's a bad person, she drinks at The Drunken Lion. You and your two allies leave Bartom's table and head out.

You open the doors to The Drunken Lion and scan the smoke-filled tavern. Sure enough, you spot a woman that fits the description Bartom gave you for Deliria. She's sitting alone at a table, drinking heavily. How are you going to handle this?

That's a very interesting reaction to touch of destiny. I guess she got some sort of insight

Well, best to get this out of the way quick. You three stride forward towards Deliria's table in the back. Gabby waves smoke out of her face as you approach. Deliria notices you coming, but other than the quick shock in her eyes she makes no sudden movements and her face quickly settles into a hateful scowl as you pull a chair away from another tabel and sit down. Gabby doees the same, while Kyra remains standing.

“What do you want?” She asks. She finishes her fourth beer and puts it off with the rest of her empty cups.

“You had men follow me today.”

She looks surprised. Guess she didn't expect them to tip you off that quickly. She quickly settles back into hate. “You killed my boyfriend.”

“He tried to murder my friend.”

“Maybe. Maybe he didn't. Harnost never told me about that. Now he's dead. Everyone who worked for him is dead. Not a single confession given. And Betsy lets you walk around the streets like you're some kind of hero.”

Gabby leans forward. “Trust me lady, your boyfriend was responsible.”

Deliria looks over at Gabby. “How could you know?” (1/2)
>>
Gabby grits her teeth and lowers her voice. “Same way I know you paid those men 25 gold each just to find out Alan's routine. Same way I know you told them to figure out 'which one he was fucking'. Same way I know exactly where you sleep at night and that you don't have any armed guards any more.” Deliria quickly switches from anger to shock and you see a twinge of fear in her face.

You lean forward yourself. “Look, this isn't a negotiation. This isn't a plea. This isn't a deal or a bargain. I want you to stop whatever it is you're planning. It's going to get people jailed and hung or worse. Walk away with what you've got.” Deliria stares at you for a good twenty seconds, a stern mask plastering her features.

“Fine. Now leave me be.” At this point a serving wench comes up to your table to take your orders, Gabby quickly shoos her away saying she'd never buy a drink from this shithole. You and Gabby get up and the three of you leave The Drunken Lion.

After your exit, Kyra comes up to you. “This over? Or should I . . .”

“If you wanted to watch over her for a while –”

Kyra shakes her head. “Busy, watching other people. Either gank her or not. Don't have time for much else.” Hmmm, you may have to ask Kyra about what it is she does around Seaside one of these days. She said something about missing persons once. Well, in that case . . .

“It's over.”

Gabby shrugs. “Well, that was a fun distraction. I'm going to go meditate and shit. See ya around, Al.” Gabbby leaves and as you turn back to Kyra you see she's already vanished. Well, time to get back on track a bit.

Wait, Quissonce. You should really figure out what you did to her. You make your way back to the Circle and head up to the fourth floor. You knock on Quissonce's door and are let in. Her eyes actually light up when she sees you and she ushers you in. She offers you some coffee, before going back to her writing. Seems she is scribbling something down on parchment. Eve is also in the room, playing some sort of single player card game.

After a few minutes of Quissonce writing stuff down, she develops a frowns as what appears to be writer's block overtakes her.

“Everything alright, Quissonce?”

She gets up and walks over to you. “No, not exactly. I haven't been able to make my breakthrough yet. Here, Alan. Poke me.” She stands stock still with her arms outstretched waiting for you to poke her. (1/2)
>>
Eve looks over from her desk. “This better not be some weird inter-species mating ritual.”

Quissonce turns her head to look at Eve. “No, what this is is the manifestation of Alan's sorcerous heritage. And I assure you, it is much more useful than scales.” She looks back at you. “Now poke me Alan!” You shrug. I mean, in this case you can not say that you hardly know her. You try to focus yourself again and pour your energies into your finger. You poke her in the shoulder with it, releasing your built up power. She takes a step back and lets whatever is happening to her wash over her before she jumps up and down. “Yes!” She runs back to the central table and begins to write more on the vellum before her. Eve walks over at this point and the two of you share a look.

“What a fuckin' nerd, right?” Eve tells you.

Quissonce clucks her tongue and then laughs. “Oh I'm a nerd am I? Well, watch this.” She points her finger at the floor and casts the grease spell. It spreads across the floor, under your feet and Eve's feet. “TA DA!”

You and Eve share another look. “That was just the grease spell. You've done that before. This better come out of the floor Quissonce!” Eve ends her series of statements angrily.

Quissonce looks smug. “It was just the grease spell. Notice anything different though?” It takes you a second. But then the realization dawns on you. Huh, she really was able to pull that off thanks to you? Quissonce quickly notices your dropped jaw and nods her head enthusiastically

Eve looks between the two of you confused. “What? I don't get what's got you two so enthralled. It's just the grease . . . spell. Oh shit.” Eve finally understands.

Quissonce just laughs triumphantly. “I no longer need to use material components. I'm casting magic naturally.”
