You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Rain pours down on you and your men, turning the ground into marsh and preventing you from seeing any further than your hand. A little bit of magic goes a long way, you think, as you enhance your vision. You can now barely make the shapes of your pursuers, hopefully as blind as you are. Your men were pulling back to your new fortress, Harrowmont, but you’d stayed behind with a rearguard to deal with this.

Brushing water from your eyes, you ready yourself to attack the enemy’s vanguard. You will crus them with your skills as a…

>1. Knight
Skilled in heavy armour and even heavier weaponry, you confront your foes head-on with brute force and magical might. Besides some talent with the bow you lack finesse but have a storied history as a general, meaning opinions of you have already been formed. (Much the same as original AEQ knight; chooses between three artifact weapons)

>2. Spellblade
Your talent lies in riddling your foes with magical bolts before ending them with your blade. Young and relatively inexperienced, you have bound a mighty magical beast as a familiar and will soar to greatness alongside him. Your lack of history leaves most nations with a neutral disposition towards you. (Chooses between either a griffin, wraith or (future) dragon familiar)

>3. Mage
The mysteries and power of magic are your plaything and your key to power. The unique magicks of your race or research allow you to seize the opportunity to become an emperor and bend the world to your will, possibly literally. Your abilities and reputation will vary greatly with your race. (Choose between Aefir elf, mystic fox or human mage (specialising in devilry))

Mage and Spellblade are basically neck-and-neck.

Let's just a do a second vote quickly to redistribute the knight votes. I'd appreciate reasons for whichever option you choose, particularly as this vote (as with all votes in all quests) likely involves a certain amount of samefagging.

For those who read the preview, note that the Mage option is considerably changed from then.

VOTE-OFF (ten minutes)

I'm just not particularly keen on the Mage's options really. A young up and comer sounds a lot more fun to me, his ideas are more out there, how he handles Harrowmont's development might be more grandiose. That and I enjoyed the Finn threads, which I imagine the Spellblade will partially play like.

An inexperienced and not womanizer MC would be different from Talon, as well as his finesse magic.

That's kind of my thoughts there. Spellblade feels too young which makes me dislike it. Knight we already know about so it would just be a redo. Mage is pretty interesting just from being able to see things we missed the first time due to the MC last time.
>>

To be fair, the Aefir had spellblades as well historically. You know, back when they were the historical superpower.
>>44231936

Actually, this particular subrace was always free of elf politics due to being powerful enough to ignore all the other subraces. Up until Kushan, their greatest human student, invaded them with a massive army of demons because his massive army of constructs and zombies wasn't enough.

Still the same as I mentioned earlier, a more innocent and inexperienced apporach appeals to me a lot more than having literally everything be tainted by antagonism of some kind.

I'm still somewhat intrigued by the Fox option, but overall I just don't see much of an appeal in being a future sociopath whom everyone hates and feel like the elf option would basically just be the mystic fox but that our own people kind of despise us as well.

I kind of like the image of a Sociopath that actually tries to build a good kingdom but due to his empathy damage doesn't do well on one to one interactions. When compared to Talon that sounds pretty interesting to me. Much better then a young dude who wants to build a kingdom.

No, the subvotes count but not towards their specialisation. I am noting the number of people voting for them, however.

As of >>44232022 it's 21 mage votes vs 26 spellblade votes. Everything is just samefagging now, so whatever.

Honestly, I'm going to go with the spellblade mostly because I suspect there's quite a few people who don't want to play a fox (which what it sounds like will be the winning specialisation).

>2. Spellblade wins. Sorry to the mage voters.

SPECIALISATION VOTE

>1. Griffin’s Pact
The spiritual beast Aeolus, taking on the form of a griffin, has formed a pact with you. Although he assists you in physical form (and is pretty large) he is fickle and his assistance is given in the form of promise rather than obedience. The pact is for you to never turn from achieving greatness, no matter the cost, and in return he will feed on your growing power – each of you must assist the other (i.e. he must help you achieve greatness and you must help him gain in power by becoming stronger). Violating the pact will permanently cripple the violator’s magical abilities.

>2. Draconic Blessing
You have gained the blessing of the black great dragon Lyria, granting you limited draconic magic. You can communicate with Lyria telepathically but she does not accompany you. Should you become powerful enough to convince her to form a pact or be bound to you then you will have her personal assistance.

>3. Wraith’s Binding
You encountered and bound a wraith (powerful spiritual beast) during your adventures and gave it the name of Mors. Mors cannot communicate beyond general emotional messages he sends you telepathically. He is vulnerable to magic weapons, making him ineffective as a frontline fighter but his speed, ability to ignore most armour and magical protection and partial invisibility making him an extremely dangerous ambusher. He cannot disobey your orders but may become more difficult to manage if he has not killed somebody for too long.

The Finn interludes were crazily fun though and, quite frankly, given that we wouldn't be having any of his trauma and hangups and would be a whole lot more proactive and less clueless I don't think there'll be enough overlap to cause harm.

We'll have some of his more amusing traits, but ultimately, "(relatively) innocent and inexperienced" is hardly the same as "clueless, traumatized and driven by nothing but hero worship".

Gotta go for that Reverse Hikaru Genji plan.
More seriously, while I enjoy that we get to have a rather "fresh start" I feel it's still important to have at least some preexisting contacts and relevant relationships.
This "long distance patron and mentor that's still feeling you out" deal appeals to me a lot and the fact that we would at least somewhat mitigate the relative lack in personal power of this option seals the deal.

The Wraith seems kind of boring, to be honest.
Basically a pure killbot that might fuck up our own side, which means there's nothing really intrigueing about him personally.
I'm all for restricting cast bloat but give how integral this choice is to the character, I feel like making our familliar have not being a character to interact with is a terrible "solution".

Leadership Lv1 – the art of commanding others in battle

MAGICAL ABILITIES

>Note that I’m experimenting with clearer skills and abilities in the hope that it might help people get more involved in combat, but if it becomes a pain I’ll revert to more abstract skills and abilities

Your name is Saul Waise and you sincerely wish that you weren’t soaked from head to toe. The padding beneath your armour clings to your skin and you shiver despite yourself. The clatter of the enemy’s armour can be heard over the rain now and it appears they’re still unaware of you and your knights. Your eyes barely make out the banner, bearing crossed swords over a silver goblet with a tan colour. At least, you think it’s tan – the dye appears to be running due to the drenching.

The question is, what the hell is a small army of soldiers from the princedom of Worremburg doing here? You’d thought that the Seraphs were staying out of this mess. Something was awry here, and you hoped that you hadn’t screwed up the politics already. You weren’t even an emperor yet!

A sending appears in front of you from Captain Malaine, who is leading the mage-knights near you. Their magical plate would glitter if they hadn’t coated it with mud earlier. Malaine is asking for direction. There’s perhaps 300 of the enemy, against 100 of your men. With the element of surprise you could easily bomb them from up on high.

>1. Bomb from above. They can shoot back with magical bolts but it should be safe.
>2. Go in hard. A flanking charge would likely shatter the vanguard.
>3. Stay low and try to ambush them. Your mage-knights have anti-armour enchantments on their blades, so you should be able to tear through them.

Yes, they tend to be more annoying, but they are basically not going to be part of your experience unless you can't control your impulse to involve yourself or want to watch a shitstorm and 4chan is down.
They are also not really as frequent as you are making them out to be.

I'm thinking with our mook murder skill we're going to break them pretty damn quickly once we get into their midst and while the straight up attack is probably less of a coinflip, I get the impression that we can't afford to trade moderate losses for a surer victory with our operation here.

>3 and 1

You respond to Malaine’s sending with one of your, directing him to put half his men in the air before the Seraphi soldiers notice. You can sense the very slight magical burn of their flight enchantments as they take off and hope that the enemy doesn’t have a mage. In the meantime, you hunker down and try to ignore the stiffness in your muscles from the cold.

Fortune favours you and the enemy continues to advance blindly. They’re spread out and completely unaware that you broke off to stop them. Several steel-clad soldiers trudge past you and the knights next to you, singing at the top of their lungs. One of them even walks over you, his footsteps making squelching sounds in the mud and the long grass. You hear a louder squelch.

“Whoops, dropped my sword,” says someone right above you and you suddenly find yourself face to face with one of the Seraphi soldiers. He blinks at you in surprise.

“Boo,” you say.

>Target met

Your sword goes through his face a little too easily, you think. Probably should have worn his helmet. Multitasking, you fire off a sending to your men to begin the ambush while you snap your sword free from the buffoon you skewered. You absently thank your magical abilities for the ease with which you pull your sword free from his armour and scythe legs out from another nearby soldier.

Shouts and screams fill the mist as your veterans begin their butchery. Blasts of magical light begin flaring about as the enemy panics and begins firing wildly. You curse as one clips your shoulder, bouncing off your breastplate. Springing to your feet, you spot a small huddle of knights. The shouts have died down as they begin using magical sendings to communicate with one another. If they rally your ambush will turn on you awfully fast.

Then the world seems to explode, blood and limbs raining down amongst the water and filling your vision with red. Malaine, with all the precision of a veteran officer, has begun bombing the clusters of knights. You just wish he hadn’t coated you in gore while doing it. Desperately trying to ignore the blood running down your face, you spin and catch the sword of a Seraphi knight. You don’t give him the chance to strike again and riposte immediately, your sword going in between his shoulder joint. He screams and you cave the front of his helmet in, reducing it to gurgles.

The explosions become more distant as your own knights begin to rally and you suspect that Malaine is cleaning up those that are trying to flee. Maybe you should borrow one of your knight’s helmets for their vision enhancements if they can see that well in this downpour.

Rallying your men after the conflict you begin to trudge back to Harrowmont. It’ll be a half-day’s walk in this mud and it’ll be dark by the time you arrive. Malaine volunteers to scout out the enemy force while you lead the men back.

Also, I'm going to quickly explain the dice. Attached is a picture of the rough overall probabilities of the DCs I'll be using. The first number is chance of success, the second is the chance of critfail.

Rolls that equal or beat the DC count as a success. Successes above the first on a single DC accumulate for a combat scene or achieve greater degrees of success. More on that as it comes up.

Rolling a 2 or lower counts as a negative success, which can force worse results (either causing a critfail or a regular fail). Rolling 96 or above counts as two successes. You can use accumulated successes to prevent critfails and the like. Note that only combat rolls have critfails and accumulated successes - on all other rolls, rolling 2 or below is just an autofail.

This will hopefully make more sense as we go along, but the idea is to have a combat chain of sorts.

SOCIAL ACTIVITY!!!
Seriously though, it's pretty clear that these first updates are more about introducing our MC and establishing him.
Interacting with others gives far more opportunity to do so and turns him into a way less no-fun-allowed, obsessive min-maxer, which is great because those people are boring as fuck and what quests always go for if they can.

Not really. Everyone needs some stress relief and there isn't like an age limit on things like this.

I kind of like the mental image of him smoking a pipe while playing chess like war strategy games with his men and making bets on who'll win this match this time.

Pic attached is the current Harrowmont. Note that the inner wall near the keep is currently in ruins.

>3. With a little bit of 2

Trying to keep yourself dry with magic was more time-consuming than you thought it would be. Maybe if you’d ever been taught formally this would be easier. Barriers weren’t exactly your strong point and trying to turn the rain into vapour when it struck your armour just made you extremely uncomfortable when the armour got too hot from all the energy. That and you still got your face wet. Running through the rain was tempting – maybe you could have done something weird with afterimages? On the other hand, you didn’t know if the Darlesians you’d added to your mercenary band would appreciate you prancing about in the rain. Better not to ruin your image yet.

You’re at Harrowmont before you know it, in all its ruined glory. What were probably terraces have mostly collapsed into massive collections of mud. The partially filled in remains of a canal are filled with stagnant water at the base of the hill, with only a couple of the old bridges across it still in one piece. Gazing up the massive incline, you see the recently repaired outer wall. For reasons beyond your comprehension, the original architect has designed it as a tiered wall. It towers above the landscape at a staggering 30m of height. Far beyond it is another wall as high and the keep, which loomed over the landscape. You knew from experience that it was a wreck, however.

Your men hail you from the walls, “How went the slaughter, Waise?”

“He’s a mess, Bors. Looks like he blew a few people up at point blank with his magic,” one of the officers, Glynn, down with you says in reply, giving you a glance.

“I could use a shower,” you say. “How’s spirits?”

“We Darlesians are fine. We’ve got a strong spine. Not the sort to just lay down and weep against the loss of one city,” Glynn says.

You hoped that would remain the case. You wave to your men as you pass them and make your way towards the keep. You still needed to repair this ancient fortress, undo more than a century of neglect, but for now it was your home and the site of the beginning of your conquest.

“Made it back in time, Waise,” an old man greets you. This grizzled old wreck was Arms Master Cormann and he managed the logistics of your mercenary company. And just about everything else that didn’t involve killing things.

“Malaine’s sent through a scout report. Says he’ll camp out overnight in the bluffs and return in the morning,” Cormann says, then actually looks up at you from his map. “First, I think you should take a shower. You’re covered in so much blood I’d swear you burst out from inside a man.”

You click your tongue at him but…

I wouldn't mind that sort of thing since that just evokes that he can be kind of competent when he needs to be, I just don't want him to be dour or serious while indulging in any vices.
You can pull off a less cheerful aproach to drinking and smoking with an older somewhat grizzled character, since that kind of works from a "rugged and experienced" angle, but if your young, happy-go-lucky protagonist turns into a somber smoker (or whatever) that implies that he's just kind of messed up in a PTSD way.

“Am I really still that red? I would have thought the rain would wash it away,” you say glumly.

“There’s a reason we wear helmets,” Cormann says with a smile. “I’d suggest not touching your hair until you’re in the shower.”

You make your way up two floors to the largest room in the keep that wasn’t full of rubble or a general mess. Time and natural events had worn down the keep, and although the overall structure was sound you didn’t care to venture above the third floor.

“I’m guessing things went well, if you can be covered in that much blood and not have everybody panicking,” says a dry voice from behind you as you fiddle with the door to your room.

“Magister Maloric,” you say politely.

Maloric snorts, shaking his head and swinging his wild mop of black hair around. “Don’t worry about the titles. York didn’t, so you sure as hell shouldn’t either now you’re in his shoes. How does it look?”

“Cormann wants me to shower before the report, but the vanguard had 300 men, so probably a couple thousand more behind them?” you say. “Any idea why the Seraphs would be after us?”

“Not a clue. Guess we’ll need to go over it in the briefing,” Mal says with a frown. “Maybe they want to shut us down now that York is gone.”

You nod, not liking that. You’d lucked into this company and been made its leader by virtue of the fact you knew something about tactics and could probably destroy half of them single-handedly. It probably helped that they met you while you’d been infused with Lyria’s draconic rage and tearing apart a company of heavy mage-knights.

Once you’d showered, and privately agreed that you looked a mess, you wandered down with a bright smile. It felt so much better to be out of the rain and clean now. Quickly wiping the smile from your face before entering the main hall, you join Cormann, Maloric and the leader of your best unit of men, which are…

>1. Black Dragon Knights
Wearing some of the heaviest armour outside of a dwarven city, the Black Dragon Knights are shock troops focused on defeating overwhelming numbers and otherwise superior foes. Their combination of extreme discipline and heavy armour allow them to pull off charges against magically superior foes. They have bonuses against magical attacks and are adept against monstrous opponents. They number 200.

>2. Spellblades
Like attracts like, and this unit of spell-hurling warriors favours you for your magical talents. The mage towers of Gauron have always recruited far too few spellblades than potential recruits and the remainder have formed mercenary units, teaching one another. This unit has been aiding you in your adventures for some time now and excel at their mixed talents. They possess power short-range magical blasts, capable of shredding many opponents, and are also extremely dangerous in melee with attacks that rip through magical armour. They suffer in extended melee, however. They number 100.

>3. Aefir Mercenaries
The Aefir are a subspecies of elf, once famous for their amazing magical power. Their race is almost without any magic now and are largely considered a charity case by their kin, but access to elven artifacts and being long-lived has led many to become mercenaries. The Aefir lack magic themselves but carry a wide range of weapons and armour with varying magical abilities. As such, they act mostly as an anti-elite unit – their equipment often allows them to tear through mages and magical foes with terrifying efficiency but they suffer against superior numbers. They number 100.

I think it would be amusing if he was really skilled at killing off his facial expressions. But during a game he just can't work up the ability to because it's all just fun and games. So he always winds up giving off tells in poker but in a real situation he can hide himself far better.

We kind of have the mook murder skillset, but our toolset vs elites is a lot more limited outside of the a few minutes of dragon rage every day.

I'd vastly prefer we'd have a decent way to deal with enemies that don't place all their elites close enough to each other that we can take all of them out at once, because we sure as hell can't afford to bring them down with numbers right now.

If there was anybody else in the company that provoked more laughter than you, it was Ser Lynn. You didn’t know why, exactly. He’s wearing his full set of dwarven maille and plate as usual, standing just a tad shorter than your own 5’3. He tilts his completely enclosed helmet to you in greeting. Almost as new to the company as you, Lynn had risen to lead the heavy Black Dragon Knights by virtue of being more reckless, dangerous and bloodthirsty as the rest of them combined.

>time to take stock

The year is 1952PC. You were the current leader of a mercenary company that desired a little more than just money. They’d been led by a dream of building an empire they would stand as heroes in and you carried that on as part of your quest for glory and power. When the nation-state of Darlesia fell recently to the vampiric armies of Taour, it had left a power vacuum that you had seized upon. You had captured the Vitrian fortress of Harrowmont while it was still being remediated and used your men to begin building an empire.

Now you faced the issue of an army from the Royal Seraphi Kingdom to your south coming to besiege you. You honestly didn’t know why – perhaps it related to the fact that the old mercenary general, Talon York, had been killed at Klufelstein Castle by forces unknown? On top of that, your attempts to work with Vitria had so far been hampered by the fact that they were in the midst of their own political turmoil and being invaded by Taour from the north.

One problem at a time, you think. Arail had reported the almost 2,500 RSK soldiers were marching on Harrowmont, mostly general troops rather than elite mage-knights. The banners were of Worremburg but he had his doubts.

If only the summoning of a Champion at the Source below you was ready now. You’d lucked onto the find – the Vitrians had only just discovered an ancient source of power, long since assumed to be sealed. If you could summon a magical Champion this would all be a breeze, but it was days away from being ready.

For now, you had 700 general soldiers, 200 Darlesian Flying Mage-knights, 200 heavy Black Dragon Knights and about 50 battle mages. Harrowmont’s outer and inner walls had been repaired by your mages.

The enemy had 400 heavy mage-knights, elite soldiers wearing armour that the RSK had copied from Shropham to the north. Accompanying them were mostly regular soldiers and archers, plus 100 battle mages, to a total of 2500 soldiers.

What plans do you make in preparation for their arrival the morning after tomorrow?

Somehow I forgot about those - I think because my notes are that Maloric is supposed to mention he's been working on them. Oops.

Yeah, you'll have 200 arcane archers (and only 500 regular soldiers) by the time of the battle. They're archers with enchanted bows, helmets and arrows.

Now that I think on it we may want to go defensive with our mages here. Our battle mages are outnumbered but Mal+50 mages on defense might be able to block most damage.

Maybe we can hide the FMKs? Then run a ambush from a unexpected direction on the foes mages and the foes general troops before making a fast retreat.

I'd reccomend hitting and running with the AA's, specifically targeting the mages. They don't know they exist yet. so they reallly shouldn't see their range extension coming. Plus, with their barriers down mages are really squishy.
>>
>>44234554
Well the terraces are nearly lost as it is might as well booby trap them to all hell. Do anything to make a trek up them a living hell.

Get some small-time siege machines, scorpions, would probably be the easiest, unless we're lucky enough to have siege archers. Get them set up on the tiered walls. Luckily that should make ladders near impossible.
>>
>>44234669
I think it's mostly people who are from somewhere with generally taller people than that. My 80ish year old grandmother is 5'3" and she is tiny as hell. But it's relative, for you he may be short, but for me and other like me he is fucking tiny. I'm all for playing a shorter lad, though.

Is it still possible to pull off some harrassing action with our flying mage-knight + us or are they moving with closed enough ranks that that would just get us shot out of the air by their mages?

Because otherwise they seem to be short on mobile stuff and I at least think their regular forces would be kind of weak to that kind of thing.

I think our biggest concern right now is porbably that Harrowmont is gigantic and if they show up with all theri 2000 infantry, they can likely just split off and force us to abandon some of the outer defenses or get surrounded by the guys that just scaled one of the unmanned portions of the wall while their stronger units kept us busy.
>>
>>44234669

>>
>>44234630
Magical ones, maybe.
>>44234554
Okay so, those armors copied from the north sound very useful, let's first consider if we can take out people without doing muh damage to the armor. Maybe drowning them? Possibly but it'd have to be done magicallx and have to seal the walls in so it's like a big raised trench.
Regardless, we should try to funnel their elite troops so we can use traps and magic and explosives, and have our dragon knight circle around to take out their normal soldiers that they will presumably keeo back a big part of.
When the siege starts, play it defensively, lure them in, then when the time comes launch our flying mag knights at their command structure with support from the dragon knights causing chaos among the plebs. Cut off the escape route of the soldiers in the castle itself, and use our mages and some dragon knights and soldiers to take them out, then proceed to outside.
Use hot tar/oil/greek fire as well, to pour down stairs if they manage to advance that far, as well as just pushing like a boulder down it.

Arhers would be good, this is the best I could come up with so far, no specifics yet, need to look through the fort blueprint again.

Also ws MC always going to be a manlet or did choosing dragon knights cause this?

I guess we should try raiding them with FMK focusing on taking out mages.

Talk to Mal about current conditions of wall barriers. If there are none can we elect one? How does he wage our 50 battlemages versus enemy's 100? Could they be shut down?

How good enemy informed about our forces? Did they aware what we hold the fortress? If not we can play "seemingly abandoned fortress" ambush.

Wouldn't the mages just murderize us before we even get close? They can sense us coming and are way stronger on the offense at range.

If we do get some of their mages though (or our own can more or less shut them down, I'd argue that we use our FMKs during the Harrowmont battle to bloody the enemies at the various outer defenses while our main force is placed more densely in the later ones.

Otherwise just place the Arcane Archers a bit forward, have them fire on the HMKs and use the FMKs to cover the AAs retreat once the enemy comes close and then fall back to where the walls are short enough that we can actually cover them all.

So the plans I'm seeing are:

1. Harassment, trying to weaken them with a focus on their stronger units before they get close.
2. Prepare for a siege by trapping and rigging the terraces to be difficult to scale. Also talk to Mal about countering the enemy mages.
3. Potentially pull back from the outer wall so you can better defend it with your numbers.
4. Siege weapons etc on the walls.
5. Ambush the enemy inside the fortress.

I'll try to put together some vote options based on this.

>>44234747

That was the first thought I had when I read that.

On the other hand if we can keep the mages busy. Like all 50 mages on Defense+Mal then have the arcane archers shoot trying to keep the mages busy we might be able to distract them long enough that a surprise shot from the FMKs could work.
>>
>>44234814
5'10'' or so is about average.
>>44234787
Addin on to this now that I saw the new info, I say only use magic archers in the first round when the ones inside the fort can't get out, use them to clean up completely, collect the enemy's equioment and our arrows. this should hopefully keep the AA a surprise from the survivors.
also the bdk should try and kill as many as possible, but have like 1/3 of them go for the more important people the mageknihts would be harrassing.
After this hopefully they should be more wary and reduced in power, which gives us time to recover, retrap, and either wait for them to come to us so we can spring mage+aa+bdk ambush on them inside the fort, or we can go with an elite ligtweight group for sabotage/ambush.
Can't really think of much more or more specific right now, it's 2:30am here.
Throw this out there and see how our lads react.

Then as the foes all gang up in one place we can sent the MC and the black dragon knights to clean up.

“I’ll take some more men and meet up with Captain Malaine to conduct an ambush,” you say to your officers. “In the meantime, can we get some traps set up outside the walls and in the outer courtyard? I don't want to restrict our mobility so keep them simple.”

“You’re not going to just wait on this arcane archer equipment I’m working on?” Mal asks, surprised.

You shake your head. “Mobility is one of our strengths. Being able to counter-charge and remain flexible can prevent us from getting boxed in,” you say.

You glance at Lynn and Cormann. Cormann nods in agreement with your idea while Lynn continues to look like somebody wearing a steel helmet with no expression. Why was he wearing the damned thing at the meeting, anyway?

“In that case, perhaps I should lead the ambush while you manage the situation here,” Lynn suggests in that artificially lilting voice of his, his helmet projecting his voice in the hall with magic.

“I don’t think we need the Black Dragon knights for the ambush,” you say.

“Not my knights, just me.”

You nod slowly in understanding, trying to look thoughtful. Mostly you weren’t sure if you were being patronised. Despite the crap the other mercenaries gave you, you knew they respected you for your talents. Hopefully it was like that with Lynn, though she was considerably more capable than most. You’d only just gotten back and already you were setting back out to cover yourself in more gore and grime. At least things were looking up – the defensive plans were shaping up well, and with only 2,500 soldiers you sincerely doubted the Seraphs could punch through your defences. Hopefully they didn’t have any trump cards to play, but Lynn and Maloric had seemed confident they could overwhelm anything. Plus, if things truly got bad you could just unleash the dragon…

You make a mental note to never refer to using Lyria’s power with those words again. Too cheesy and you know she’d get snooty over it next time you spoke to her.

The trek is slow going in the night but you find Captain Malaine without too much trouble. He and his men are encamped on some bluffs near the enemy’s camp, dealing with the chill of the Autumn night without fires. Dawn’s still a few hours away.

You respond dryly, “I’m looking forward to another shower after you explode somebody in my face again, Malaine.”

For his part, the knight captain laughs it off. “You did ask tell me to begin bombing them. Perhaps you could start wearing a helmet?”

You feign a sign but smile regardless. “Let’s get down to the plan then.”

Malaine nods and his voice loses the cheerfulness of earlier as he gives you the details of the enemy encampment.

They’re clearly on the lookout for a night attack after losing their vanguard, with plenty of guards around the edges. The mages are dead centre in the encampment, with the heavy knights nearby. Curiously, there appears to be a rather large tent off to one side of the heavy knights. Perhaps it’s their general?

“I think we should avoid that one, sir. I’m not sure I like the look of the, uh, women going in there,” Malaine says. “Normally a general would be a prime target but everything about this seems off.”

You frown at that. “Should we not be attacking them?”

“I didn’t say that. I just… Something’s off here. I’m not seeing huge tanks full of blood so it’s not a vampiric force but nothing about this seems right. I can’t picture the RSK attacking us like this out of the blue, particularly with such a small force for them. If they wanted us dead, they could muster 20,000 men in a day.”

Grim thoughts, but you can’t disagree. The size of the forces that the RSK and Magi League threw around in their war with each other meant they could easily obliterate you if necessary. Was this just some random noble with a vendetta? You’d killed no small number of RSK nobles while working for the Magi League in the war…

For your attack you…
