Hey all, classes are done, but that doesn’t mean I’ll have a regular schedule any time soon. We’ll see what happens, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy what we can while we can.

>Fate Point: 2
>Money: $565
>Equipment Carried: Tier 2 Assault Rifle. Tier 2 Armor. Tier 1 Pistol. Tier 2 Rucksack. Tier 1 Med-kit. Tier 2 Med-kit. Tier 1 Toolkit.

Your name is William and you are cold. Not just cold, but the cold that comes from sitting on top of a moving train in a chill winter day. You’ve probably been in worse weather, you remember sitting through a blizzard at The Compound, but you were inside for that. Mostly.

Thankfully you have proper winter clothing thanks to Koko, which helps quite a bit but you aren’t exactly warm either. Except for your back, where you feel Sarah leaning against you, that’s pretty warm.

You’ve been out here with her for nearly an hour and not a word has passed between you, the initial vigilance now turning into dull monotony as fields of grey and white pass in front of you. You really don’t know all that much about Sarah despite the length of time she’s been with the group, as she’s the quietest member of MMS aside from Cath and possibly yourself.

You feel slightly restless and shift yourself against Sarah just to keep life in your body. She notices, finally speaking.

“You ok back there Will?” she asks you, as you feel her head turning slightly towards you.

“It’s cold,” you say to her, flexing your body once more before settling back down to watch as more and more fields go by, “But I’m fine.” You don’t elaborate, seeing as how you really are fine compared to most of your life. The fact that she even thought to ask of your status would’ve been novel a few months ago. Now it simply makes you feel a bit of warmth, seeing as how you still sort of like it when people ask after you.

“Are you actually fine or are you just saying that?” asks Sarah, her head turning back to her side of the train.

“I’m okay,” you say, seeing as how she asked again, “I’ve been colder.”

“I have too,” says Sarah, “Doesn’t mean I enjoyed it.” You feel her shift against you, likely doing the same thing you were before. You don’t really enjoy the cold either, but you don’t see a whole lot of point in complaining about it. You might get… looked at. Which might lead to you getting… well you aren’t really sure but you don’t want to make anyone unhappy either.

“So Will,” asks Sarah, “Do you ever miss home, wherever that might be for you?”

You think about this for a little bit, wondering exactly where “home” would be for you. You don’t think you remember your really old one, just The Compound, which was more of a place than a home. MMS is probably the closest thing to a home you can remember, but then again you haven’t really been gone all that long either.

“I don’t think so,” you say, seeing as how you aren’t sure that you’ve ever missed a home since you first got to The Compound.

“Huh,” says Sarah, sounding surprised, “I thought you would’ve been the missing home type.”

“I don’t remember where home is,” you say to her. It’s true, you don’t remember nearly anything from before The Compound, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. You just couldn’t point anyone in the proper direction in the first place.

“You… don’t remember where home is?” says Sarah, “At all?”

You want to just shake your head at her, but she probably won’t be able to tell what you actually mean if you just wiggle.

“No,” you say, “Not before.” You pause but then decide to add in one last bit. “MMS is home.”

“MMS is home huh?” she says, the sound of her rifle moving from one shoulder to the other just audible over the Windstream, “Well I can’t really say that I disagree with you, seeing as how I haven’t been home for several years myself.”

You let out a small grunt, wondering slightly where Sarah’s home might be, though you don’t have to wonder long.

“We’re actually going to be heading closer to my home than I’ve been since I left,” she says, continuing to talk over the Windstream just loud enough for you to hear it, “Wish I was going back under better circumstances… not that I’d likely get turned away since they don’t know but still…”

Sarah stops talking, letting out a sigh. You begin to wonder what she’s talking about since you don’t know what she’s talking about, but then again you’re not sure if you should ask her anything in the first place seeing as how well… you don’t know anything about her in the first place. Besides that her home is apparently towards where you’re heading.

>>
I've been writing, but consider this your official call for asking Sarah what she means!
>>
>>44233932

You decide to indulge in your curiosity just a little bit and ask Sarah what she’s talking about.

“What don’t they know?” you ask, having to raise your voice as a blast of wind sends shivers down your spine and chills you even more.

Sarah doesn’t immediately respond to your question, the sudden absence of talk striking compared to her previously unusual string of talk. You’re about to forget about it completely until Sarah deigns to speak up once more.

“Will, do you know what… what “lesbian” means?” Sarah finally says to you, her voice barely reaching you over the sound of the wind.

You think on the term for a minute and can’t think of any time it’s been used in front of you or that you’ve even heard it before.

“No,” you say to her, your voice slightly curious, “What does it mean?”

“It… it’s used when a girl likes other girls,” she says, “In… certain ways.”

“Ok,” you say to her, noting the word down just in case you ever hear it ever again.

Sarah waits a little bit to see if you say something more, but since you don’t she continues on her own.
>>
>>44234538

“Anyway…” she says, “People back from my home don’t really like them for a number of reasons. They generally don’t even like talking about them. After I’d been gone for a while… well I…” she stops talking again, once more lapsing into silence.

You let her be, seeing as how she doesn’t seem to want to talk about it anymore. The whistle of the wind through your ears continues, your eyes gaze out on only vaguely changing scenery and your mind once more starts to go back to just watching.

“They wouldn’t like me if they knew,” she finally says minutes later, her voice quiet enough that you aren’t sure if you’re supposed to hear it or not, but seeing as how she’s right behind you the words manage to carry over to you.

“What do you think Will?” she asks you, her voice once more raised above the wind deliberately, “Is it weird for a girl to like a girl?”

“Why would it be?” you say to her, your mind wondering why that would be weird, “Morrigan likes Nem and Cath… Mary likes everybody…”

Sarah suddenly starts laughing, though it isn’t exactly a humorous laughter, more of a dry hollow laughter than the ones that Nem or Morrigan usually uses. Seeing as how you aren’t sure how to respond you just let her laugh until she’s done, which takes what seems like several minutes.

“Oh Will…” she says, “It’s… it’s not like that…”

“What’s it like then?” you ask her.

“It’s… it’s… I don’t know how to explain it to you,” says Sarah, “Just… its liking people in a different way than how Morrigan, Nem and Cath like each other.”

You didn’t know that people could like each other in different ways, seeing as how you barely know that people can like each other in the first place. Pondering this for a minute you speak up.

“Does that mean lesbians can’t like men?” you ask her, wondering about if liking girls means you can’t like men.

“No, no that’s not true at all,” says Sarah, humor coming back into her laugh, “It just means that they don’t like men in certain ways, they can still be… friends.”

“Ok,” you say to her, nodding a bit despite the fact that she probably can’t even feel what you’re doing.

“So…” says Sarah, “If I said I liked girls that way, you wouldn’t think it was weird?”
>>
>>44235728
“No,” you say to her, “It’s not weird.”

Sarah doesn’t say anything to you, but you feel her sit up against you a little bit straighter and then lean back against you a bit more.

“You know, you’re the first person I’ve told that to in a long time,” she says, “A long time. I suppose that makes us friends right?”

You ponder what she said, then what she said before all of that. If there’s different ways to like people, but she doesn’t like you in the way she won’t talk about, does that mean she didn’t like you before or something else?

>Friends.

“Friends,” you say to her almost immediately, thinking that you consider everybody in MMS your friend judging by what she says. You think you like the word, especially since it gives meaning to what you’ve been feeling for a while.

“Does this mean we weren’t friends before?” you ask her, suddenly concerned that she didn’t like you before at all.

“What?” says Sarah, “No, no that’s not what I meant it’s just uh… you don’t talk a whole lot Will, I wasn’t sure you thought anything much about me at all.”

You can’t really disagree with that statement, seeing as you haven’t had many conversations with her.

“You shoot good, keep watch and share ammo,” you say, “Don’t take food away… you talk to me nice.” You shrug against her, “Friends.”

Sarah lets out another chuckle after you finish, “You have strange definition of friend Will.”

“…I didn’t have friends before,” you say to her.

“…Not even one?” asks Sarah.

“…No,” you say to her.

“I suppose it isn’t that odd then,” says Sarah, her tone going down a bit.

You sit like that for quite some time, the fields and grey sky only occasionally broken up by the odd town or road.

“So Will,” asks Sarah, breaking the monotony again, “Seeing as I told you about my interests, do you have any?”

“…I like blankets,” you say to her, wondering what she means.

“Not like that,” she says, “I mean, do you like anybody?”

“Uh…” you say to her.

Thinking about Sarah’s question takes you a while, as you suddenly try to think of all the reasons that you might like somebody. It’s not a really long list, but it’s a bit more than you’ve ever actually tried to think about before now.

“I like Morrigan,” you say, “She answers questions, shoots people and promised never to hit me or shoot me.” You shudder a bit at memories brought up by that.

“Not to… hit or shoot you?” asks Sarah.

“Yeah,” you say to her before continuing, “I like Cath because she works out with me, showed me how to help more and she’s quiet.”

Sarah doesn’t say anything now as you continue.

“Nem is funny and laughs, she shows me how to watch people and she tells me stories.”

You pause a second as another blast of wind hits you, sending shivers through you both as white flakes of snow start to swirl around.

“Mary gives me books, gives me food and tries to teach me things too,” you say, remembering the time in the bathroom when you learned about naked people.

“Bellona likes to drink the clear stuff with me, she shares blankets and she’s warm,” you say, trying to keep everything straight.

“You’re warm too,” you say, “And quiet, but you listen to me talk like Morrigan and Mary do.”

Sarah is quiet for a moment as well. “So that’s all the reasons why you like us Will?” she asks, her voice somehow soft.

“No,” you say, “Everybody is really… nice, everybody shoots the bad guys, helps each other… shares things…” you realize that your list is getting rather long by this point, so you stop talking. You think you might’ve talked too much for Sarah now.

“Those… those are really good reasons to like people Will,” says Sarah, her body slumping a little bit against your back, “Really good ones.”

You’re pretty happy that Sarah thinks so, you weren’t sure what everybody else might think about the stuff you like.

Once again you lapse into silence, with only the click-clack of the train and the whistle of the wind for your ears.

You stay cold for most of the time, but you don’t feel like you’re going to drift off to sleep like you did that one time either. After a certain point, you hear a thud, causing you to look over at the roof of the car off to the side. Climbing out of it is Koko, her long white hair blowing around wildly in the wind stream though she doesn’t seem to mind.

“Hello!” she calls out, scrambling over the top of the car as the large lady with the eyepatch sticks her head out of the hole to look around.

“Hi…” says Sarah, turning around to look at Koko.

Koko grins as she plops down next to you, reaching into her coat to pull out what looks like a metal container of some kind.

“How’s it going out here?” she says, looking around at the steadily worsening weather.

“Cold,” you say to her, watching as she undoes something on the container and then puts it to her mouth as steam seems to rise from the opening.

“I can tell!” she says, then notices you and Sarah looking at her. She grins and offers you the container, “Want some?” she says without elaborating.

You turn and look at Sarah, who shrugs.

You look back at Koko, who tips the container to you once more. You nod and take it, shifting your rifle so that you aren’t going to drop it with just one hand. Bringing the container to your mouth you carefully take a sip of what seems to be a very hot something.

As you do so something warm and milky spills across your tongue, something you haven’t tasted before sending a shiver through your brain at the richness of it all. You blink as the aftereffects linger in your mouth, something strange still there… sweetness. You vaguely remember something like it from a long time ago.

You look up to see Koko staring at you, Sarah too. The black haired lady dropped down into the train car once more at some point.

“Like it?” says Koko with a grin.

“Yeah,” you say to her, handing back the metal container, “What is it?”

“Cocoa!” she says with a grin, offering some to Sarah as well, who takes it carefully and sips.

“Damn that’s good,” says Sarah, handing it back to Koko, “Haven’t had any in a long time, where’d you get it?”

“You can still get almost anything if you have the right connections,” says Koko with a grin.

Sarah just shakes her head at Koko and then goes back to leaning against you.

“So what are you doing up here?” asks Sarah.

“Just checking on something,” says Koko, looking about in the weather.

“What could you possibly be checking on in this weather?” asks Sarah, “It’s freezing and you can barely see anything in the first place.”

Looking about you have to agree, even as the train slows down and negotiates a turn. You’re not sure if it’s because of the change in speed or not, but you look about a bit more, perking up from the change. It’s then that you spot it, a flicker of light out in the distance and a bit of haze.

At first you aren’t sure what you’re seeing, but then you recognize it. Smoke from a fire, a decent sized one from what you can tell, probably hidden somewhere in a depression.

“Sarah,” you say, tapping her on the shoulder to get her attention and then pointing, “Look.”

“What?” she says, turning around, then looking at where you’re pointing.

“Fire,” you say. You aren’t certain that it is something… but it’s the first different thing you’ve seen all day.

Sarah brings her rifle up, eye close to the scope as she does her best to find out something.

“I see… something,” she says, “some kind of shelter I guess but I can’t see anybody around. No reason for anyone to be out here though.”

“I think that’s my que to leave,” says Koko, closing up her container and then scrambling for the roof hatch.

Sarah glances at her, then to you. “I think we found what she was looking for,” she says, just as the train suddenly slams on the breaks, nearly causing you to fall. Sarah does fall over, but you manage to grab her and prevent her from going anywhere until the train slows, as she holds onto her rifle with both hands.

Even as she sits up, Sarah is looking around, her head on a swivel. You look around too, something is up. There’s a noise and Morrigan’s head sticks up over the edge of the hatch.

“What the fuck is…” she starts to say, only to be interrupted by Sarah.

“AMBUSH!!!” she yells loudly enough to be heard over the wind and likely down to the end of the train where you can see soldiers looking about from their positions, then her rifle comes up and she takes a shot at what seems like empty ground… only for a scream to be heard and then all of a sudden more of them open up, only these come from what look like previously empty fields.

Woo! End of the thread for the night guys. Sorry for the cliffhanger, but I'm tired and don't think i can continue much longer.

Hope the thread wasn't too slow, I realize that I'm doing a lot of character building which takes time, but I hope you're enjoying it.

Questions, comments, concerns, etc welcome.

What kind of music would Will enjoy? I imagine something on the calmer side, but he might enjoy something heavier if he had some repressed rebellious side.
>>
>>44238567
Personally I think Will would like very simple things at the moment, quiet piano type things, soft string pieces, maybe easy guitar.

Rebellious things might come later, when he even has that idea.
>>
>>44238653
I dunno man, he just needs to hear something that just speaks to him. It can range from a simple folk song to GY!BE, it just needs to touch Will's soul.

I think this because I was listening to the blues since I could remember, even though I didn't completely understand it until I was in high school.

I also might've hit the blunt too hard on the first few sentences but no one can really describe music that well, anyway.

Like I said, that's just my opinion. Will may eventually find what he needs, but right now he barely understands the concept of music.
