Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

<THE_FIRST> So why exactly did you challenge me to a duel
<chocolat_orange> oh, i just thought we could use it to unwind. let out some of that pent up stress we’ve been carrying around for the last four days. sound like a good idea? :)
<THE_FIRST> Wait so the students of Akumachi-Kirijo literally beat the stress out of themselves
<THE_FIRST> Is this a common thing or what
<chocolat_orange> i wouldn’t say common but according to kanami some students do
<chocolat_orange> i’ve already reserved the duel with the teachers. it’s happening this Wednesday afternoon on 4:30 pm
<THE_FIRST> Huh
<THE_FIRST> So it’s really happening
<chocolat_orange> yup ;)
<chocolat_orange> to be honest, takashi-kun…i’ve always wondered what it would be like to fight you. you’re quite strong, but so am i. which one of us is better?
<THE_FIRST> Compared to nee-san I’m nothing
<THE_FIRST> And anyway
<THE_FIRST> First exam grades now this
<chocolat_orange> is it a bad thing to be competitive? i know the two of us were more motivated when we both challenged each other. it worked out in the end.
<THE_FIRST> Hey I ain’t saying what you did was bad
<THE_FIRST> In fact I’ve been wondering what it would be like to fight you too
<THE_FIRST> The thing is Celeste

So I'm starting to regret training Persona Augmentation with Shizuka instead of taking the "learn a new support spell" option. Ippon-Datara is all offense and status effects, we don't have any buffs or healing. We should make sure to get some support spells by the next time we duel, when it's not just a friendly spar with Celeste.
>>
>>44250460
normally we'd have Pixie or Moh or another persona to handle it, sadly we can't show them off atm.
>>
>>44250505
That's what I mean. In the Void we can wield multiple Personas, so having our main be a dedicated damage-dealer isn't too much of a weakness. But in a public duel, especially a one on one duel where we have no backup, that becomes a liability. We should get at least one support spell on Ippon-Datara as an insurance measure.
>>
Writing now...
>>
>>44250460
If we learn persona augmentation we can steathly cast support spells on ourselves as long as there isn't any spotters.
>>
>>44250615
Sure, and outside Spotters are forbidden so they'd only be in any duels that were already team affairs, so we'd have backup in those cases anyway. But mastering that is still a ways away, and I'd like to have something in the meanwhile. And again, it's always good to have at least some support magic we can cast without raising any suspicion.

<THE_FIRST> So if I win you have to buy me one
<chocolat_orange> hmm okay then! but the same applies to you.
<chocolat_orange> i’ll have you know that i am a girl with very high standards when it comes to crepes
<THE_FIRST> Considering how tight your budget is I’m not sure that’s a good thing

<THE_FIRST> What’s wrong with tomorrow
<chocolat_orange> the teachers have reserved it.
<THE_FIRST> Seriously?
<chocolat_orange> yeah, they get stressed out too!
<THE_FIRST> Hey isn’t that the day when the exam results come out
<THE_FIRST> Technology is fucking magical these days

[8:30 am, 11-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

It’s homeroom. The tension is palpable…again. Not due to exams, no those are already a dim nightmare in the backs of the collective student body’s minds. This is the anticipation of what comes after, squeezing the hearts of hundreds to breaking point. Dignity, money and rivalries are all on the line. By the end of the day, half the academy population will sigh with relief, while the other half will have their hearts shattered in two.

Veleis-sensei strides into classroom 5-3. The class immediately snaps to attention, an infrequent occurrence. She sees over thirty expectant faces gazing back at her, as she places down her clipboard and calls the roll.

“Yes, yes. I know what you’re all thinking.” Veleis-sensei rolls her eyes. “They won’t be out until recess. Stay patient for two more hours, children.”

A resounding ‘aw…’ fills the classroom. Dozens of shoulders slump. The stiffness in the stomachs of your more competitive and ambitious classmates grow tighter by the second. You see one kid biting his fingernails out of the corner of his eye. Another girl is chewing on her eraser.

Veleis-sensei looks around the room and sighs. “Since you’re all so tightly strung, I might as well announce this piece of news. Lord knows you won’t be able to focus otherwise.”

She snaps her fingers and the display on the holographic board changes.

“I do have the pleasure of announcing our top three in this class. No, I won’t tell you their exact grades. You can look them up later. In first place, Kanade Shiba! In second place, Takashi Wakui! And in third place, Korin Fuchizaki. Congratulations!”

Kanade looks nonplussed. Getting top marks must be a common thing for her. Takauji isn’t too surprised, either. As for you, however…

A hubbub breaks out in the classroom. Your fellow classmates begin whispering to each other.

“Takashi Wakui? Never heard of him.”

“Isn’t he in our class?”

“To get second place out all thirty-five of us…he must be good.”

“Wow you guys, rude.” Takauji speaks up. “Look, Takashi is right next to me. You guys got something to say to him?”

Around thirty pairs of eyes are now trained on you. You look between them all. Expressions range from curiosity to disbelief with a few outrages faces in between.

“Hi.” You say back. You put up the index and middle fingers on your right hand. Yeah, peace peace. Everyone stares. You twitch your fingers for good measure. Your face is so deadpan it could be flattened under a steamroller and nobody would notice the difference. Takauji is clutching his side and trying to hold back his rampant chuckles.

“Man, what a weird guy. Dangerous, though.”

“And here I thought I could finally catch up to Shiba.”

“We’ll have to look out for him in the future…”

Your classmates return to discussing among themselves. You breathe a sigh of relief now that their attention is no longer on you. Someone is pulling on your sleeve. It’s Takauji.

“Second place in the whole class?” He exclaims in a hushed whisper. “Forget ‘pretty well’, man. You did fantastic! What’s your secret?”

“Hard work and perseverance.” Is your immediate response. Then you remember the meal you had before the first day of exams. That blistering hot sauce, the way it almost caused your tongue to melt into goo, the fact that it was the main reason why you couldn’t focus on the Japanese exam. You contemplate all these factors about Akumachi-Kirijo’s infamous mapo tofu.

“Also, the curry.” You say, your voice bearing no hint of levity.

This does not go unnoticed.

“The special curry in the cafeteria? That helps?”

“No way! I flunked my English exam because of it.”

“But this guy said it worked so…”

“Maybe I should give it another try.”

“But it’s the food only A-ranks can eat!”

“Never tell me the odds!”

Veleis-sensei groans and slaps her palm into her face, as if to say, ‘The shit I put up with these kids.’ Kanade gives you the evil eye. Takauji bangs his fist on his desk, howling with laughter.

“Takashi, you are an evil man. Don't ever stop.”

[10:30 am, 11-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

Veleis-sensei begins teaching a double period of mathematics. She knows her class is fidgeting in their seats, their concentration levels dangerously low. So she gives a brief introduction onto the new topics, graph sketching and algebra, then hands out simple worksheets for the class to do. Two hours pass. By the end of it all, everyone is point their heads to do, ready to dash out the moment the first bells ring. They are like butterflies moments before their hatching.

Veleis-sensei shuts down the screen and faces her class.

“That’s the end of class, everyone. Review the material when you get home. And now for two simple words, children.” She says. “Don’t rush.”

The bell rings.

All that’s left in the classroom is dust. That, and heavily misplaced chairs.

“So where exactly are the result boards?” You ask.

“There’s a couple around the school. The closest one is at the end of the hallway. Come on!”

You storm down the hallway with Takauji and Kanade, shoving people aside as you go. A large gathering of black uniforms and sweaty hands is seen in the distance. You hasten your pace.

“Wait, I thought the results are available online.” You say.

“Yeah, but this way is quicker!”

Attached to the wall is a holographic display. It lists every person in the second year of high school in the academy. The top students are displayed on the top left, the bottom feeders at the lower right. Next to it is another display listing a bunch of special achievements certain students got. You can’t be bothered to look at the moment. Pushing through the crowd, apologizing as you go, you make your way up to the front and squint at the display.

>>Takashi: Take a moment to reflect on how Akumachi-Kirijo exam scores work.

Exam scores are calculated as an average of all the individual exam marks a student receives. Grades are labelled with the standard A-F letters, but the overall scores are given titles. 70.0-79.9 % is a credit, 80.0 to 89.9% is a distinction, 90.0% and above is a high distinction.

It also possible for students to receive over 100% in their exam marks, usually as a result from doing bonus questions on the exam. Any student who receives over 100% in their overall scores receives commendation, and in some cases a prize, from the school. They also receive a star next to their name on the results board.

However, the number of students who receive over 100% every exam period in each year level can be counted on both hands—at best.

You search for your name. There it is Takashi Wakui, class 5-3, received 95.7%! A full HIGH DISTINCTION

You are struck dumb by how great these exam results are. Considering how difficult the course here was compared to your last high school, this is an amazing achievement. All that hard work truly did pay off in the end. Nee-san is going to be so proud of you.

You feel a little embarrassed. In the past, you only managed to get 80% at best. Receiving a 95.7% in your new academy is a little much for you to handle.

Wait, what’s that ranking there? That double digit number next to your name?

Number 15 out of 150 students? What the everloving hell?

All you did was try your hardest, fueled by the determination to win. None of this changes the fact that Celeste lost to you by the tiniest of differences. 0.1%. A single mark. Could be a misspelling in an essay, a missed part of the question, a single digit gotten wrong. She said she would beat you and now the truth is glaring straight back at her. You can’t imagine how humiliated she must feel.

She takes a deep breath. Then another. She removes the lollipop from her mouth. She clenches her fists and opens them. Slowly, she cranes her next in your direction.

“Yeah, we really did, Takashi-kun.” She says. Then she smiles. You let out a sigh of relief. Seems like she isn’t too mad at you. “Good work to both of us.”

“Can’t believe I beat you by 0.1%. It’s ridiculous. It’s worth a single mark, for god’s sake.” You reply. “We might as well be even.”

“Hey, don’t say that. I’ll get angry at you.” Celeste puts her hand on your shoulder. “A win is an win. You beat me fair and square. Feel proud about it.”

“Yeah, I should.”

She then winks and sticks her tongue out. “But you shouldn’t get cocky. I was this close to beating you. If you get slack, I’ll speed past you. Just wait until the next set of exams!”

You fold your arms and grin. “You’re saying you can beat me anytime you want?” You chuckle. “Okay Tachibana, I’ll take you on anytime you want.”

The two of you share a laugh. You feel better now.

“Honestly though, 16 out of 150 is a great result. It means I’m better than 90% of the whole year level.” Celeste observes. “Even though I lost to you, I’m very happy with my results.”

She then grimaces. No doubt recollections of the questions she failed on are passing through her head. “But where did I go wrong? It was definitely maths. Japanese literature didn’t so go well either. I think made a silly mistake in Mythology about the angel hierarchy too. Ahh, I need to study harder next time!”

You wince. Damn those essays, the Politics/Economics and Japanese ones in particular. So many grammar mistakes and poorly worded sentences. Such flawed reasoning. You need to work on that, stat. At least the English one wasn’t too bad.

You scan down the list for other names.
>Fumika Shibuya, class 5-2, received 100.9%. Ranked 7 out of 150 students.
>Akikazu Osaragi, class 5-3, received 50.7%. Ranked 87 out of 150 students.

>Kanade Shiba, class 5-3, received 102.4%. Ranked 6 out of 150 students.
>Kanami Ishimura, class 5-2. Received 97.8%. Ranked 12 out of 150 students.

>>Takashi: Examine at the second display.

This one hosts special achievements for the year level. Highest in maths, highest in history and so on. Oh cool. Most of the names you don’t recognize, but then you reach the part for highest in English.

>Highest in English: Celeste Tachibana (125% MAX, Class 5-2, Ranked 16 out of 150)

“Yup!” Celeste places her hands on her hips and puffs up with pride. “First in English out of the entire year level. Pretty good, huh?”

“You’re a native English speaker. You lived in America.” You mutter. “I’m not that impressed, Celeste.”

>>Takashi: Check the results of the other year levels.

You open your smartphone and go to the school portal. Let’s see here…Eriko Ozaki came first out of the third years. Not too surprising. Vice-president Rinako Ichimonji got fourth, Kaz Inaba claimed seventeenth. Yoshino Sagisawa, your House Captain and senpai, got eighth place! She must be jumping with (nervous) joy right now. You gotta admit, you’re happy for her. The rest of the list is once again filled with people you don’t know.

>>Takashi: Read the second display.

There’s a list of the number of students who got over 100% in any of their individual exams. It’s much, much smaller than the main one. The 100+’s, the title reads. Anyone who reaches this list is automatically a credit to their class and entire family. Fumika, Kanami and Kanade are on there. So is Celeste, with the number 3 next to her name. At the very top is some girl you’ve never heard of. She has a 5.

You have a 4. Four 100+'s out of seven topics. Coincidentally, you’re tenth on the list, flanked by other 4s on both sides.

You suddenly feel really self-conscious.

“I’m out of here, Celeste.” You grumble. “Let’s go the cafeteria.”

[4:00 pm, 11-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

The rest of the day passes by. You go to classes, eat lunch with your friends, rib each other about exams and generally enjoy a normal school day. You have fun. But the chosen moment is arriving sooner and sooner. In a flash, orange and pink cover the sky. You stand up from your seat, packing your bags away. Takauji and Kanade walk up to you.

“You ready, Takashi?” Kanade grins. “It’s almost time.”

“Wait, you guys are coming too?”

“Hell yes!” Takauji pumps a fist in the air. “It’s your first Persona duel. I’m not missing out on this for all the ice-cream in the world.”

“We’ll be waiting for you in the stands. It’s an interesting matchup, you and that Celeste girl. We're rooting for you!” With that, they leave.

You exit the classroom and head elsewhere. There are a few more preparations you have to make.

>>Takashi: Enter the Velvet Room.

“It’s been a while, kid.” The boy smirks. “My dear little sister and I know what you’re here for. Pick your poison.”

Cards hang in the air. They are all of the Fool Arcana.

NAME: Yomotsu-Shikome
RANK: D-
STATS: STR E+, MAG D-, END E, AGL E, LCK D, DEV D
AFFINITIES: Resists Ice and Dark, Weak to Light
SKILLS: Bufu, Poisma, Sukunda, Mudo, Disguise Hermit.
-Poisma poisons an enemy. Mudo deals dark damage with chance of instant KO. Sukunda lowers agility/evasion.
-Disguise Hermit makes it’s so that the wielder’s Arcana will appear to be the Hermit to all methods of detection.
-In Japanese lore, they are hideous demonesses of Yomi, the land of the dead, and serve the gods there. Izanagi came down to Yomi to take back his dead wife Izanami, but when he saw her ugly form, he tried to escape from her. Enraged, Izanami sent the Shikome after him. Each Shikome commanded an army of Yomosu Ikusa. As he ran, Izanagi threw his hair and comb to the ground. His hair became grapes and his comb bamboo sprouts. The Shikome forgot their duty and started eating them.

Not really. We can't go full wild card anyways since they will easily tell what our persona is. We still should trade in slime. No real growth and other issues pop up.

>>
Here's a list of things you can get away in the duel.

-Because no-one is allowed to interfere with Spotting skills, Takashi can switch back and forth between his Personas as long as he DOESN'T summon them.
-Obviously if Ippon-Datara is summoned he is not allowed to switch between Personas. Once he retracts Ippon-Datara, he's safe. There have been many people who have claimed to be the Fool in the past. All of them have failed the test and the Fool Arcana is considered to be an impossibility.
-For example, say Takashi retracts to Ippon-Datara, switches to Koppa Tengu and finally casts Garu; that's allowed. People won't get suspicious. Even if they do, they won't be able to prove anything unless Takashi reveals his powers in public or something.
-None of the referees will use Spotting skills either.
-If Takashi is under danger from being scanned (or skills like Full Analysis), it will be made explicitly clear.

Also, Takashi's casting speed for Persona augmentation is a bit slow. Physical and simple elemental spells are fine. More advanced stuff, such as healing, light/darkness or buffing is difficult for him.

Uh, I think I should have made this clear earlier. Do you still want to only choose Ippon-Datara or do you want to take a few additional Personas?

Alright, Ippon-Datara it is. Also, I have to eat lunch now. Be back in around thirty minutes (if everything goes well).

Here, have this picture of our Lord and Savior Kaede Kurusu to tide you over.

Our chi casting isn't good enough to warrant having other personas available, we'd basically just use them for their resistances and Ippon datara is already resistant to fire which is Celeste's main focus.

Damn it, my computer crashed and I couldn't get my phone to post. What do you mean by "retracts Ippon-Datara, switches to Koppa Tengu and finally casts Garu"? You need to visibly manifest your Persona to use its magic unless you're using Persona Augmentation, so wouldn't people still notice "hey, his Persona just changed into something completely different" even if we didn't swap it directly?

Considering that duels are ultimately non-lethal? There is precedent. The hell do you expect us to do if the enemy team has a spotter?

Ippon-Datara, Koppa Tengu, Jack Frost, Archangel, Valkyrie.

>More advanced stuff, such as healing, light/darkness or buffing is difficult for him.
Wait, but last thread you said that Takashi had figured out how to use Mudo with Persona Augmentation just fine. That's darkness. Did you mean to say a different spell, then?
>>
Also, we should grind our asses off to teach Ippon-Datara a water move or some shit, so we can have plausible deniability when we need to whip out a healing spell.
>>
>>44254311
.....so you agree with me, that there are cases where we COULD limit our persona setup.

There is no reason to not take the others with us since only the active one will be scanned.

I think the point is that no one knows definitively what Takashi's spells are, so we could Chi Cast anything and people will accept it as being Ippon-Datara's. There have been enough weird combinations of Persona and spell by now that the assumption will just be that it's something we were holding in reserve as a trump card rather than some unique power.

>>Takashi: Choose only Ippon-Datara.

You’re tempted to select your other Personas. Newest addition Obariyon would almost completely counter Celeste with its resistances. Koppa Tengu would make for neat backup. However, this is going to be your first duel. It feels special. It’s your first, serious fight against a Persona-user your own age. Using your Wild Card powers feels a bit like cheating and you’re not sure if you can hide them well enough on the battlefield anyway.

So you’ll face Celeste one-on-one. Blacksmith god against immolated goddess. With Ippon-Datara by your side, you’ll take her challenge head on.

You step into the Battlegrounds. The place is split evenly into a number of arenas, outdoor and indoor. Celeste is waiting on the other side of the designated field.

“Took you long enough, Takashi-kun!” She calls out. “Hurry up and let’s get started!”

The other person is…

“Veleis-sensei?” You exclaim. “You’re a referee?”

“Unlike my human peers, I don’t require as much food, drink or sleep.” She says, “I have more spare time. Now then, I take it that you’ve both signed the waivers. But just to make sure, I’ll ask again. Whatever happens in this arena is your responsibility. Do you agree?”

“Yes.” Celeste responds.

“Yeah.”

You glance around. Takauji is sitting next to Kanami in the stands. Kanami nods and Takauji flashes you a thumbs-up. Kanade is on the row behind them and she gives you a friendly wave. She looks a little displeased that she’s separated from Takauji, though.
>>
“Then, a reminder of the rules. You will in if you render your opponent unable to continue or if they surrender. Exiting the arena is an automatic loss. Damage such as gouging eyeballs and severing limbs is forbidden. There is a thirty minute time limit, after which a draw will be called. As a referee, I have the right to interfere at any time.”

Celeste takes out her rapier. It’s a replica one, most likely borrowed from the fencing club. It’s not capable of inflicting fatal wounds, but getting slashes by it is going to hurt. A lot.

“Is there anything you would like to say before the duel begins?” Veleis-sensei asks.

“Let’s have a good match, Takashi-kun.” Celeste states. “May the best man win.”

Will you say anything?

“Same here.” You say, and grin. “Let’s do our very best.”

“Participants, shake hands!” Veleis-sensei shouts. “Move to your designated place on the field.”

You bring up your fists, entering the stance Takauji and the martial arts club taught you. There are no knuckledusters this time. Only warm flesh and hard bone are what remain.

“All of you seem to be fine.” Veleis-sensei says. “In that case, Dekaja! Dekunda!” Orbs of light surround the two of you and crack into pieces. All potential buffs and debuffs have been nulled. She raises her robotic hand towards the ceiling and opens her mouth.

“Takashi Wakui vs Celeste Tachibana. Duel…Start!”

The bell rings.

The moment Veleis-sensei gives the word, you crush the card of the Hermit. Ippon-Datara appears in a sea of cobalt-blue, his muscular, armored one-legged form for the world to see. He swings his hammer in an arc and roars.

You waste no time in charging forward towards Celeste. Fire isn’t going to work on her, so you’ll smash into unconsciousness!

“Agilao!” Fireballs, hot and furious, descend from an arc in the sky. Sati hovers in the air in front of her master, arms crossed and glaring. You dodge the flames and continue to power forward. A fireball is fired straight at your chest. Ippon-Datara knocks it aside, throwing it into the arena walls.

Suddenly, Celeste is up in your face, rapier out. She slashes. You dodge. She does this again, with the same result. You duck down, then attempt to punch her in the face. She yanks her head back and Sati hurls another wave of fire. You scarper off to the side, avoiding the majority of the flames.

“Tch, this is going nowhere.” You growl to yourself. “Fine, time to shake things up a little bit.”

You haven’t cast this spell in battle before, but you think you’ve managed to get the gist of it. Either way, there’s no time to think. You press your palms out and focus the magic inside of you.

“Pulinpa!”

Ray of sickly, orange energy burst into the air and fly towards Celeste.

The spell misses. No, that is an understatement. If Pulinpa was an arrow and Celeste was the arrow balanced on the page’s head, then the arrow would have completely gone in the opposite direction and hit nearby the king! That’s how much you failed in trying to cast it!

Damn it, why didn’t you practice more?

“Agilao!” Before you can react, Celeste has let off another spell. It hits Ippon-Datara square in the torso, covering him in the fire. His damage is transferred to you. You scream in pain. Even though your Persona is resistant to fire, it hurts like hell! You scramble backwards, arms and legs burning.

“Rakukaja!” Celeste shouts. A blue-grey aura surrounds her. She casts it again. “Rakukaja! Agilao!”

You manage to regain your balance just in time. The fire sails harmlessly past you. However, you’ve suffered quite a bit of damage. Celeste’s fire is being amplified by her Fire Boost skill. You can’t take her lightly…

“Should have done this from the beginning!” You shout. You sprint forward, fists ready. You are a bull, red with vigor and ready to crush some bones. Celeste fires off fireball after fireball in an attempt to slow you down. Ippon-Datara deflects and you dodge.

“Here I go!” Sati tries to send a flaming palm into your face. Ippon-Datara’s hammer smashes through the air and the Persona is forced to dodge. You are now within melee range of Celeste. To her credit, she doesn’t panic. She grips her rapier tightly and prepares to stab you full of holes!

You duck and weave through the attacks and swing your fist…

You punch goes outward. It catches Celeste straight on the shoulder. She lets out a cry of pain and stumbles backwards, guard broken. Her rapier is down. You are relentless. You take a step forward and, in a smooth motion, pivot on your left foot.

"Eat this!"

You deliver a solid right hook into Celeste’s cheek. Something cracks. She is sent flying across the arena, landing on the hard ground on the other side. Up in the crowd, Takauji whoops and cheers.

“Ow…” She shakily climbs to her feet, clenching her teeth in pain. “Sati!”

“I’m not giving you time to heal!” You roar. “Skull Cracker!”

Ippon-Datara flies forward and brings his hammer down. Sati raises her arm to block. They connect and the air around them howls. But, Sati is not a physically offensive Persona. She is weak. She is forced downwards and onto the ground. Behind her, Celeste screams again. She quickly summons a fireball and hurls it at your Persona, which you dodge.

She leaps backward, clutching her side. It’s obvious she’s in pain, despite the defensive buffs. Her body is trembling. Yet, she is still smiling. She’s confident. Does she have a trump card? Impossible, you’ve seen her fight. You know all her skills.

Maybe it’s simply her determination pushing her along. Well, you’re determined too! You’re going to win!

You rush in again. Close-range vs long range. Hermit against the Magician. Celeste unleashes another torrent of fireballs. A couple hit Ippon-Datara and singe him. Nevertheless, you push forward. If you get in close, then you’ll be in your element.

Your feet pound across the arena ground. It’s hot from the fire. You’re getting closer and closer. This time, Celeste goes on the offensive and come to meet you. Her rapier shoots out, jabbing at your arms. You easily deflect it and punch her wrist. She almost drops her rapier. Another hit from Ippon-Datara knocks her further back.

She is now almost against the wall. In desperation, she attacks with another ball of fire. You punch it away. It burns your fists, but the pain is nothing.

You don’t stop.

“This is it, Celeste!” You shout, fists brimming with your Persona’s power.

She smiles.

“No, Takashi-kun. You’re right where I want you.”

The light burns. It is agonizing. It envelops you only for a brief second, yet it hurts worse than any of the previous Agilao spells put together. You shriek and tread backwards, desperately clawing your way out of the ring of sigils. This does not go unnoticed. Celeste takes the advantage of the confusion to slam another Agilao into Ippon-Datara, dealing another chunk of damage to you.

“How the hell can you do that?” You shout.

“Don’t you know?” Celeste spits back. “Sati was the first consort of the god Shiva. She’s a holy woman. Of course she can use light spells!”

“Then when did you learn that?”

“Oh my?” Celeste asks, a mocking smile present. “Takashi-kun, are you saying you didn’t take the time to practice your magic over the exam period?”

“Damn you…” You snarl. “Then, how about this! Mudo!”

Blackness, reeking of death and despair, crawls out of the ground towards Celeste.

“I won't let you! Hama!”

Light and darkness clash against each other and break. Celeste summons more fire and hurls it towards you. You plough through and punch her. She conjures light again and you dash away. You counter with Mudo, but Sati is not naturally weak to darkness. She casts Hama over and over again. Bloody hell, is her mana supply bottomless?

As much as you hate to admit it, she’s got you on the run. You need to find a way to turn the tables again.

Fine. If you can’t get close and Mudo isn’t working, then you’ll just have to try something unorthodox. You screwed up royally last time, but second time’s the charm.

Right?

You can’t think about this now. Act, then think!

“Pulinpa!” You roar. The same orange energy as before speeds towards your opponent. At the same time, she casts her own spell.

“Hama!” she shouts, again.

The light hits you at full force. You collapse to the ground, your skin searing. Darkness grows at the corner of your vision. All is not lost, however. Your Pulinpa spell actually succeeded and hit Celeste square in the chest. She’s gripping her head, trying to calm the confusion bouncing off the walls of her mind. It’s obvious she can’t see what’s happening. Both your Personas are immobile.

If you manage to get up, you could hit her with a Skull Cracker. She would go down if that happened. But if she managed to recover in time and notice you lying on the ground there…

No, don’t let those negative thoughts get to you. You must persist!

You press your hands against the ground. Your body is screaming at you to stop and rest already. Yet you force yourself upwards. Your knee hits the ground. You stand up, legs wavering.

“Skull…Cracker…”

Ippon-Datara staggers forward, his hammer ready to come crashing down.

However, you are not the only one to recover. Celeste has shaken off the confusion. She sees your climb to your feet. In desperation, she screams out her last spell.

“Agilao!”

The hammer comes crashing down on her chest.

The fireball sails through the air and strikes against your body.

It hurts, so so much.

Both of you collapse onto your bodies and onto your backs.

None of you move.

It is quiet. The crowd is hushed.

You hear someone speaking in distance. It’s Veleis-sensei. Her voice is drowned out by the encroaching unconsciousness, as if at the bottom of a well.

“Last man standing wins. 10…9…8…7…6…”

And yet, there’s a burning fire inside that won’t let you go. Celeste tried her hardest. She came at you with everything she had. She was merciless, determined and ultimately magnificent.

It would be disrespectful if you gave up this close to the end!

Combined with how well we did on the tests we're going to get a weird reputation out of this.

So Takashi's special is Turnabout?

That's what I mean. We're going to get a reputation as this weird savant, whose success is always either only complete or barely scraping by. No one's going to know what to expect from us.

You look ahead.

Celeste is lying on the ground, her long orange hair spread out behind her. Alive, but heavily wounded. She’s out of the game. You breathe in and out, almost refusing to believe your eyes. You’ve beaten her.

Victory is yours.

Veleis-sensei raises her hand. “Duel over! The winner is Takashi Wakui! Very well done!”

The crowd erupts with cheers and applause. Takauji is waving his hands about like a maniac, screaming his head off. Kanami is clapping gently, while Kanade shouts encouragement at the top her lungs.

Akikazu is in the crowd. He shakes his head, no doubt muttering obscenities under his breath. Then he grins and raises his thumb towards you.

"Not bad." You hear him growl.

The other students, dozens of them, are cheering as well. They are shouting words of praise, banging their seats, hooting and laughing like maniacs.

“Absolutely amazing!”

“Well done, Wakui! That was so tight!”

“I can’t wait to get a piece of you!”

You look around at the crowd. You give them a weak smile.

Then you fall flat on your face and conk out.

>Gained 15.50 C. EXP
>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 5 points!
>Your reputation around Akumachi-Kirijo has increased!

>"That first fucking Pulinpa though!"
>"The hell did he Mudo for? Style points?"
>"He closed to melee against a double Rakukaja? The absolute madman!"

How many C. EXP until our next level up? Because we need to sink some ranks into MAGIC POTENTIAL.
>>
>>44258043
>Your reputation around Akumachi-Kirijo has increased!
No shit. Once word gets out about our family relations to the school, we'll never have a moment of peace and quiet.
>>
>>44258043
>part of the Wakui family
>achieved rank 15 with 4 100+s on midterms as a newcomer
>hangs out with the student council president's friend
>fought in an impressive showing of ability and willpower
Man, people are definitely going to know our name. And we're a Hermit too.
>>
>>44258043
Didn't we level up?

3.0 +15.5 =18.5

We missing 1.0 EXP for the next level up, goddamnit.
>>
>>44258137
Well, they think we're a hermit.
>>
>>44258121
What did we need for persona augmentation?
>>
>>44258179
D- rank. We're currently at E+, so one level up will do it.
>>
>>44258179
Higher Magic potential.
>>
>>44258179
If you mean the total C.EXP, I think we need 69.
>>
>>44258160
overfilled EXP will help us though. Either by leveling up something we increased before or learning new skills. Both are good, but S rank development sounds amazing to me.
>>
>>44258208
We'll improve STR after that.

THE RIDE IS NOT OVER.

I concur.

While I doubt ippon will evolve outside of ridiculous circumstances (max every social link and backflip over the moon, twice), the ability to learn skills quicker trounces all else.
