You have just found what Synthia asked for. She tells Jack to get nearer. She says she has a plan.

Jack doesn’t really like the look on her face.

“The Captain’s Access card should provide Access to all other rooms, except the core, on which Anderson’s installed a bio-scanner. Fortunately, we’ve got something to bypass that. You have his hand, I have his eyes. We just need the Access Card.”

She hands you an access card, one with the name “J. Prince”.

“This should get you into Prince’s Office. This,” she hands you two pairs of eyes. “Should get you into the core. One set you can return to Anderson to get your suit. The other is a… copy of sorts, which should be enough to get you in.”

“Once you get into the Core, you can override it and set the ship to operate on the normal FTL drive. I hope you know how to force a FTL drive to overload?”

You nod. You almost did it to your ship several times, on accident.

“Good. Set this ship to explode, lock it so no one can alter its destination from somewhere else, destroy the computer and get the hell out of this place. I’ll be waiting for you at the airlock, with the seeding I promised you.”

“Now go. Get out of this hellhole.”

Please, suggest an action.

> What do we do if we meet the Captain, or the Captain's clone?
“Not a clone. A copy, and a corrupt one at that.”

“Try not to stand in his way. If that doesn’t work… Well, that nail-gun can do some damage. Just not for too long.”

> What do you think Anderson did? Luke implied the Captain or a Captain was working for Anderson.
The Captain, just as Anderson and Luke, got ensnared by the Core. They want to go back to it.

She says that Anderson didn’t need to do much convincing.

She’d guess that Anderson needed some brute force done, somewhere, if he was really the one responsible for infecting the Captain. Or maybe he just wanted another toy to play with. She wouldn’t know.

> Analyze a feather from down below.
It tells you that a DNA analysis show that it is residue form a duck. No anomalies were found.

> If she copied the eyes, can she make a copy of the hand? Do we have time for that?
She says she has to make heavy use of the restoration machine to make it work, and that takes time. She says that she doesn’t think it is wise to waste any more of it.

>Examine bloodstained door button thing and oddly tiny looking couch.
The button seems to be bent, though still functional. Looks like someone mashed it with a lot of strength with a bloodied hand.

The tiny looking couch looks to have been one of those psychiatrists sofas where people lay down to talk about their life. You don’t know what they were called. This one seems strangely small. Jack remembers it being larger and comfier. This ones leather is dry and rough to the touch.

>That's some odd bloodstains. It looks like the fight began near the door and went over to the lockbox, where the victor took something, went back to the door and opened it. Either their hand was injured, or they were holding their wound closed.

>>
>Check out the missing drawer in the filing cabinet.
It appears to have been torn open, by the bent metal near the borders, but the drawer itself is nowhere to be seen. The other drawers contain many sheets of paper, all filled with strange symbols you don’t understand.

>How are the others labeled, what was the missing one alphabetically?
They are labeled with the same strange symbols. Jack says this used to be where the doctor kept his files on everyone. Prince was fond of using paper.

Jack says the cabinet used to be bigger. He says that with the ship changing the way it is, even if you knew how it had been ordered originally, it probably wouldn't have helped much.

> Can you touch the darkness?
No. The darkness is literally nothing. It is not solid, there is simply nothing there.

> Jack: Use flashlight.
Jack uses his flashlight, but there is nothing for the light to reveal. The nothingness seems to go on forever. You do note that this room is surprisingly cold.

>Can you peek to see what is below the ground?
Yes. You peek around and below the borders of the ground, just to see that you cannot see the door and the ground from behind. From behind, it looks to be as much “empty” as the rest of the room.

>Can we use the captains card to enter the remaining bedroom?
Jack says that you should be able to, yes. Jack also says that he is not sure if he’d want to.

You don’t think that Simon’s bomb was that powerful, though you could go and check his room to see if the blast broke through the wall. The heat from the blast should have already dissipated.

Luke doesn’t really responds. He is breathing really rapidly, his left eye twitching. He looks on some sort of adrenaline high.

>Simon, what did you do.
>I thought you weren't going to help until after your fifth attempt.
He says he had no choice. He had to get into the garden. It was what his Epitaph had said. The last of his deaths.

>What Epitaph? Where did it say that?
“Stop, passenger, and view this mound
With aspect melancholy,
Here wisdom lies beneath the ground
And here lies Simon Croly.”

He asks you what could be wiser than the only being in this whole ship that has cooperated with other members of its kind? The one whose roots are buried in the soil in this very garden?

He also says you should know that about his epitaph. You have his book, don’t you?

>Simon, if you'll stay alive a little longer, we can make sure you die in the garden right here, along with everything else. You just have to take Luke's blowtorch and give it to us.

He says that he doesn’t think Luke will cooperate. He says that he is surprised that Luke hasn’t attacked you yet. He recommends not making any sudden movements. He says that he had never seen something move so fast as Luke, and that he has built FTL drives.

He says that it was as if he simply blinked into place.

Only the coldness of death can calm him now.

>Examine bomb.
It appears to have a countdown, in attrition to the detonator Simon is holding. You should probably act fast.

>In a little while he'll be able to die anywhere on the ship. He just needs to be patient.
>But he'll have to give us his weapons and let Synthia go. It won't be enough if he just kills himself again here. We're going to end this nightmare once and for all, but we need him to trust us.
“How do you know? This place has no rules, but the ones created by the Drive. Maybe he will let me go. Maybe I’ll fulfill my fate and break free. Maybe I will be stuck in this place for eternity.”

He says Anderson is nearly ready. He can’t take the chance to wait and return to the darkness.

He says he has to try. He doesn't care anymore if he has to sacrifice others to do it.
>>

“All the other parts have already been fulfilled. Only the first one remains.”

He says he doesn’t. Last time he saw his book, he had given it to Synthia, a long, long time ago.

>Don't you want the fifth death to be as big a bang as you can get?
He says that the scale doesn’t matter, but the only way to get Luke’s help was to build him a bomb and promise to burn the place to the ground.

Could we use the scalpel as a mirror to look around the corner?

She is healing nicely, though it is going to take some time to heal. You have no idea of the scale of her injuries. You could take her out now, but you think it needs at least another hour to get her to the point where she can walk by herself.

You ask yourself what you should do now. You think there is only one thing left to do. You are scared. You hoped you'd have company for this. Things did not go as planned.

The giant whirl of the ventilator at the bottom of the pit stops.

Anderson smiles.

SEE? EVEN THE SHIP HAS GIVEN UP!

The spinning returns, just as he has finished speaking.

Yet this time the wind blows towards it. It is getting stronger.

The ship is helping you.

You begin to form a plan.

>Hurl his cane into his giant eyeball.
>Smash open that tube of redfluid
>Kick him over the railing

You still have two nails in your gun.

You feel that this is your final challenge.

You need to decide what to do.

Simon about once per chapter, so he is out of the equation.

Luke is gone, probably, but his resurrection was nearly instantaneous, even faster than Anderson.

Anderson seems to take a few minutes. If we manage to kill him now, we rush the fuck out before the cunt respawns
>>
>>44261685
The ship...rushing air upwards?

The only plan that would help is spreading the red fluid everywhere in the room on the wind.

>Smash open that tube of redfluid
>>
>>44261685
Dash towards red tube to fake him out.
Leap back when he rushes to intercept.
When he's between the tube and the pit, fire a shot to break it.
While he flinches away from the red liquid, fire another shot at his legs so he loses his balance and stumbles over the railing.

Alternatively, we can throw a heavy object at the tube if we have one. Like the fire extinguisher, if we remembered to pick it back up.
>>
>>44261714
He has tentacles now, with dramatically increased reach.

Man shooting Anderson should have probably been more about crucifying him to the wall or pinning his feet to the floor, in retrospect...

He's like fucking Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The quest was supposed to last the 5 chapters it lasted, though I didn’t think I would be able to do each chapter per quest as I did.

>I get the sense you were prepared to have Jack die at any of the points coming back from singularity containment if the right answer wasn't found?
Hell, I never planner for it to be Jack the one to go do it. Ellie was the one supposed to go there and save the day.

But you guys attacked the insane mouse, so she ended up half dead.

Which was weird. You guys went in ways I hadn’t expected in the least, making quite a few puzzles moot.

>Was Jack screwed if he hadn't obtained the cutting and planted it before descending?
Pretty much. I’d probably make Ellie wake up, still all banged up, but I truly don’t know what I would have done.

Mainly because I screwed up. You were supposed to take the butterknife as a good luck.

I know there was more to the Engine Entrance room but we sorta.

Cut the Gordian knot on that one?

I was really curious what the fuck was going on there and wanted the Captain to actually do something for once. But escaping asap seemed a higher priority apparently.
>>
>what were the good/bad surprises at player choices
I think the most surprising was when you actually stopped and talked with the ship’s psychologist. It was amazing.

Though I never expected, for example, for Jack to be the one to go down first into the lower parts of the cargo hold, in chapter 2. I had planned for Ellie to go, get into the gun, then be fucked up when the gun fired. Then Jack would have to find her and get her to the healing pad asap.

And the final fight was completely without planning. I had no idea how you were going to beat Anderson.
>>
>>44262783
I'm glad that my plan worked out, then.
>>
>>44262650
I assumed the "prisoner's dilemma" the quest put Jack 'n' Ellie just wouldn't have a clue like that.

>>

>Cut the Gordian knot on that one?
I have no idea what that means.

But the Captain was supposed to have a much bigger role. In fact, he was going to be what Luke ended up being, but then I noticed it didn’t make much sense for him to be Anderson's puppy, so I made a few changes.

>>44262800
In what I originally had in mind, both parties would be awake to make the decision, so it would be more interesting than Jack making the choice on his own.

What really got me itching was what you'd have done if only one of them could leave the ship.
>>
>>44262783
>It was amazing.
It was, I did enjoy doing that, but I really regret mixing up Ellie with Jack.

Jack was the one who had found corridors leading to nonsensical spaces, and thus arguably kept "getting lost in the ship." Ellie hadn't encountered that yet.

I should have said Ellie's problem was that she heard her friend's voice in the next room, but he wasn't there.
>>
>>44262822
Well, she had just seen a worm-like monster eating a body, so she was pretty shaken.

Although really, the worst infections onboard the ship were highly visible and purple, no one expects something you can't see.

>>
>>44262846
I think that this quest was somewhat limited by the speed of the imageboard. Even though this is one of the slower boards, threads still don't last more than a day before being purged, especially quest threads which tend to fill up with posts pretty quickly. Then after one thread dies, there's a long period of waiting for the next thread, so the players have a good chance of letting it slip their minds until the next thread, at which point one could presumably read through all the previous threads again.

It makes it hard to keep track of all the cryptic and complex things going on, especially since discussion would be pretty awkward at any time; during a session it would be competing for space with suggestions, and the threads don't last for very long after a session ends. The inherent transience of a 4chan thread is inconvenient for quests.
>>
>>44262818
>if only one of them could leave the ship.
That didn't seem likely. Was that even a possible scenario?

We just stumbled bass-ackwards into causing circumstances that prevented that?
>>
>>44262882
I swear to you that the final boss happened to be in that room by pure chance. Or some subconscious action, which is creepy as hell.

It was only after I placed Anderson’s sprite that I realized that room had a conveniently placed giant set of spinning blades. And I did not even think about using the Fermionic liquid to beat him until you guys suggested it.

Really, I don’t know how the fuck I expected you to beat him, if it weren’t in that one room.

Bear in mind I have only the faintest idea of what is actually going to happen before starting a session. I know the beginning and have some notion of what I want the end to be. Everything in-between is mystery.

> no one expects something you can't see.
You never did check the suit to see if there was anything on it, though.

>>44262925
Same reason Simon waited for you to die.
"Reality in here is fickle. How will you know that you truly died if no one witnesses it?"

If there is no one to observe it, it doesn't happen. The rooms, and their consequences, do not exist unles someone is on them. or something like that.

I am tired, sorry.

>>
>>44262990
It was. But only if you had actually seen the bacteria that Anderson had placed on the suit and sterilized it. The way it went, you missed it, thus creating another soul from which Jack could “push off”, so to speak.

>>44262990
Perhaps, though I don’t think so. I can’t envision a scenario where he doesn’t die, though you’ve surprised me more than once. He was supposed to be the one who tried to make the person who went into the core to fall off the bridge.

Maybe if both Jack and Ellie were up and alive, they could have distracted him while the other went to get the suit on the other ship
>>
>>44262983
How did Anderson even get through the door to Engineering.

...Actually the respawn point seemed to be the spot that Jack and Luke died on --- the gun room, the laboratory, Luke's bedroom--

but obviously Synthia and Simon and Anderson did not respawn where they died. Dr. Prince is less clear.

>>44262650
>You guys went in ways I hadn’t expected in the least, making quite a few puzzles moot.
What, exploring every room we knew existed because of completionist urges?

I imagine going straight to the core would have been easier if we never witnessed Simon's fifth death, and left him and Luke occupied in the Garden while Ellie descended.

But then we might switch to Jack's POV and he might visit the garden for dat sweet southern BBQ smell.
>>
>>44263031

In case you check the thread later, you might like running a quest here:

http://tgchan.org/kusaba/

It's a slower site, so it's easier to run a quest at a slow and steady pace, and quest threads aren't removed until over a month of inactivity. Plus, there's an on-site archive, so threads don't just vanish when they're moved off the main boards.
