You are Laura Kinney, mutant vagrant.

Your mission is simple – you are to infiltrate the dwelling of a local gangster known as Zhang Lei and extricate an artifact of great archaeological importance. Your secondary is to uncover any link that may exist between the New York Triads under Mr. Negative’s control and the superhuman calling himself Typhon.

Typhon. Grecian, divine, malignant. An archetypal dragon. Father of monsters. Ultimately slain by Zeus.

John sets you down in the shadow of a Manhattan tower block, invisible wings heaving one last time to cushion the landing. There is a sound like teeth cracking against gristle as the huge appendages fold inwards, disappearing under the flesh of his back.

“This is it.” He says, glancing up. “I think.”

Zhang Lei procures for Mr. Negative only the most esoteric and strange of antiques, whether from ancient Rome or the days of the Old West. He owns multiple safehouses, but his most prized artifacts are thought to be kept here, in a penthouse that occupies the top two floors of the towering building beside you. While known to NYPD, Zhang has never been officially implicated in any kind of criminal activity, making the building legally untouchable to law enforcement. The detective agency for which John works, however, has no such legal troubles.

John is tense. You can see the sinews working under his skin, stretched taut along his muscles. This is good. He sets down Layla, who appears to be feeling somewhat ill after her first flight.

Layla Miller makes you uncomfortable – you edge slightly away from the two of them while he makes sure she’s alright.

Within six minutes, Nico Minoru arrives, apologizing for her slight tardiness. You greet her quietly, and she tells you she likes your choker. You feel your cheeks redden very slightly.

Nico is one of John’s coworkers. She is quiet, like you, and does not pressure you to converse. You find this relaxing. There are a number of people you no longer feel excessively anxious in conversation with, but you still find the act exhausting at the best of times. People do not come naturally to you.

“Right then.” Says John, casting his eyes up the height of the building. You know this present look – he is going to defer to your judgement. You have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it is the correct action, and his confidence in you is pleasant – like a warm, soft glow at the base of your stomach. On the other, it draws attention to you. “Anyone have any ideas about how we should do this? Laura?”

You feel Layla’s eyes on you, and it’s like something burning against your skin.

You feel the universe packing itself away around you. Colour, and warmth, emotion – these things dwindle into the background radiation of your mind as the mission stretches out to swallow you. You used to appreciate this clarity of purpose. It distracted you from things – it still does. But the world is not as empty as it once was, and now it feels like parts of you are being torn away and crushed, ground down and blunted to make room for a vicious creature that you are beginning to recognize less and less.

Glancing up, you scan the nearby skyline.

You point at one of the nearby tower blocks.

“That building is nearly equal in height to this one.” You state, your voice calm, quiet, regulated. “It would make an excellent vantage point. John, you should take position there.”

He nods readily. “Okay.”

You flinch a little at the expectation in his eyes. Suddenly you are afraid of being wrong.

You push it back, clip it down.

“The rest of us will enter the building.”
>>
>(2/2)

You withdraw the rappelling device from one of the harnesses worked into the thigh of your suit, aiming it for one of the darkened windows several floors up. There is a dull, pneumatic hiss and the device bucks in your grip, sending its adhesive tip shooting up through the air. It hits the window it optimum force – enough to adhere, not enough to break anything. The Moon Knight’s tools are top-notch, better even than those you are used to working with for the Facility. He must have access to not only vast wealth, but numerous military connections.

You offer your spare hand to Nico, and find yourself freezing up for a moment as Layla wraps her arms around your waist, generating a duplicate to leave on the pavement beside you.

“Can you take all that weight?” John. He looks skeptical.

You nod.

The rappel pulls you swiftly through the air. You feel Layla breathe in sharply against your waist. Your stomach turns a little.

Securing your feet against the window pane, you tell Nico to hold on to your shoulders while you with draw a single razor-sharp claw and cut a serviceable entryway into its surface. You enter quietly – less quietly than you could have done, were you not assisting two untrained civilians, but quietly enough.

The room inside is a broad living space – large enough to elicit a long, aggravatingly nasal whistle from Layla. There are signs of life, but nothing to indicate that anyone is presently at home. Without fear of immediate discovery, you progress quickly to the door, slicing it open and making your way toward the nearest stairwell.

Nico breathes loudly behind you. Her heartrate is up beyond normal. She is frightened, or exhilarated, or both.

“Um, Laura?”

You glance back at her over your shoulder.

“…Shouldn’t we be, I dunno, moving… sneakily?”

You shake your head slowly.

“No amount of carefulness will prevent us from showing up on camera.” You state. “Instead of attempting to go unnoticed, we should proceed quickly to this building’s security office. It should be at least four minutes until we are spotted, and, if standard security guidelines are being observed, the room we are looking for should be located within one floor of the building’s exact middle.”

“O-oh. Okay.”

Standard security guidelines, you find, are indeed being followed. You locate the security room on the forty-fourth floor.

You ready yourself at the door, motioning for Nico and Layla to hang back further down the corridor.

I hope Laura doesn't go full snikt on the security unless necessary. Might be too much for Layla to see people get murdered on her first excursion.

Laura has one of those Moon Knight stun batons that came with the suits?
>>
Why is Laura so wigged out by Layla?
>>
>>44309140
Because she's not JJ.
>>
>>44309140

Possibly the fact that Laura is a clone, so seeing someone effortlessly and without any hesitation clone themselves might weird her out.

Plus, since there is no "original" Layla, the one she met back before the Orphanage shit happened could technically be long dead.
>>
>>44309140
Probably doesn't think she should be on the mission, but won't say anything to JJ about it. Girl should really express herself more.
>>
>>44309140
Because JJ is so nice to her.
>>
>>44309175

That makes the most sense to me. Maybe Laura is freaked out by all the existential questions Layla's mere existence raises.
>>
>>44309140
Honestly? Laura has good instincts, something probably is actually off about Layla.
>>
>>44309140
Because of her morbid obsession with Death. That girl ain't right.
>>
Once we have security secured, we could consider checking if they have any headphones stored there and pass them around. That way we can have Layla/laylas stay in security and watch the cameras for us and warn about obstacles before hand.

If there are previous recordings and a free pc terminal, she could also go thought those to see if there are any sign of Sinister Six or Typhon on them.
>>
>>44309297

When your power is at least somewhat related to the Stark Trek teleportation theory, you'd be curious about death, too.
>>
>>44309359
That would be super cool if we stumble on some, but I'd just worry about a clean operation with our two rookies here.

Or download them and see them later on the moonphone. The security guard probably has a smartphone with him, take out the mini sd card and download the archives, if present.

Sliding a claw through the lock, you kick the door down, bolting into the room.

Your senses explode through your skull, soaking the contents of the office into your skull. Two men, middle-aged, healthy physical condition. One of them – the one leaning against the security desk with his elbow – has not eaten his lunch yet. Judging by his scent, and the smell of the lunchbag propped against the side of the desk, he is on some manner of low-carbohydrates diet. His meal was prepared for him by a female, also middle-aged, most likely Caucasian. Both men are wearing discreet tactical vests – good against anything 9mm and below, less effective as ordinance increases in size and penetrative power.

The man with the full belly is faster. His hand flies down to his belt, for the glock kept loaded and safetied there. You aim the rappelling device and let it fly – there is a sickening crunch as the adhesive head impacts with the man’s nose, splintering cartilage and cracking bone, knocking him from his chair and into unconsciousness before he has the chance to even cry out in pain.

The second employee reaches for the alarm on the desk before him, and, immediately, you retrieve the silenced pistol you procured in you last encounter with the Bratva, leveling it at his throat. Your finger squeezes down on the trigger, and –
>>
>(2/2)

You freeze. Just for an instant. The smell of the man’s uneaten lunch expands sickeningly in the base of your skull, until that tiny instant seems almost endless, and there is nothing but the curdling smell of dead and living meats, of a woman’s perfume, of lettuce, of… of…

You edge the weapon to one side and fire. The bullet streaks across the room, slicing through the mug of still-boiling coffee nestled precariously on one side of the man’s desk. It explodes, showering him with scaling liquid, and he recoils out of pure reflex, the alarm momentarily forgotten in the shock of sudden pain.

Without second thought, you dart across the room, planting your foot in the center of his chest, knocking the wind out of him and sending him crashing to the ground. Before he can right himself – before he can even really get a grasp what’s happening – you bring the barrel of your weapon to his forehead.

“You will be quiet.”

You make quick work of all footage involving your activities, giving Layla a brief tutorial in camera management while Nico watches the terrified and badly scalded man crouched down beside his desk. It will be advantageous to have one of the girl’s duplicates manning the room. As you explain the desk’s functions to her, she looks at you almost unblinkingly, and with uncharacteristic silence, as though transfixed.

For a moment you see her painted with old, black blood, a pair of festering wounds running along the length of her throat, from the base of her chin to her collar.

You blink hard, and it’s gone.

But you still remember the way her eyes looked, all glassy and hollow and staring opaquely into nothingness. You remember the sound of the flies that gathered over her.

When you’re sure Layla has taken everything in, you turn back to the cowering security guard, kneeling down to his level. His eyes are familiar in a different way – not glassy, or vague, but precise and full of terrified denotation. Full of sights not to be seen, of years vanishing, of things being missed. You know this well.

When you ask him about the building’s Triad connections, he’s cooperative – desperately so.

He doesn’t work for Mr. Negative, apparently, but the local branch of the company that hires out security staff to this building is for the most part in the superhuman’s pocket. Aside from him, his company has no other personnel working the building, the Zhang actually has a number of his own men actually living on the level below his two-floor complex in apartments of their own, ready to respond at a moment’s notice to intrusions of any kind.

“JJ is on the other roof.” Says Layla, suddenly. She has some kind of shared awareness with her duplicates, it seems – though nothing as precise as directly transmitted senses. “He says there’s someone on the top balcony. Just one guy.”

Zhang? Or someone else?

You turn back to the security guard.

“H-his apartment, its three floors.” The man pauses, licking his lips nervously before explaining: “It’s not on the schematics, but there’s another floor below his. That’s why there’s an extra set of stairs leading up there.”

Interesting. That must be where Zhang keeps many of his acquisitions.

For a moment, you ponder on the kind of wealth necessary to keep such a secret from not only the building’s staff, but from the various law enforcement agencies no doubt interested in Mr. Negative and his extensive collections.

No matter. Mr. Negative, no matter how much influence and power he possesses, is not invulnerable. No-one is. You recall that he was considered a potential buyer by the Facility, and their extensive vetting generally precluded individuals the organization could not effectively dispose of if necessary. It was for this reason that Victor Von Doom had been removed from the client list, along with several other superpowered individuals.

You try to think of what to say. Eventually, slowly, you begin to find things resembling words, and they start to form on your tongue. They feel strange, unfamiliar, but not uncomfortable.

“Thank you.” You say, a little hesitantly. “Your companion will require surgery, but will survive his injuries. You will not be harmed any further.”

He visibly relaxes – only little, but enough. You choose that moment to whack the side of your gun across his head, knocking him out.

You pull yourself to your feet as Layla produces another double.

The smell of grease and three-days-baking rot washes over you for a moment, before vanishing once again.

“We should move.”

Leaving Layla’s duplicate, you head quickly up the building, slowing your pace when you notice the stairway extending to double its usual length. You must be walking through Zhang’s collection right now.

At the top of the stairs, there is no corridor, only a single, unnumbered door. You recognize the telltale signs of an electronic locking system, and for a moment, you wish you had John with you. His mold electrokinetic abilities would probably make short work of such a system – possibly even circumvent the alarm no doubt incorporated into the threshold.

Generally, at this point, there are two options.

The first requires finesse and patience, and no small amount of luck. You can cut a serviceable, if somewhat small, entrance into the door, bypassing the lock and most conventional alarm systems. Zhang’s apartment encompasses the entire two floors above, so, even if he is present, there is no guarantee that he is close enough to detect the intrusion. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that he’s not, and certain extraordinarily expensive alarm systems can detect such breaches.

The second option is less subtle. You can cut the luck, storm the complex, and deal with whoever is inside.

Wolverine's claws vary from artist to artist. So they're anywhere from 9 to a whopping 17 inches.

Laura is a few inches shorter than Logan so I'd put them at 8 or 9 inches. After googling "how thick is a floor" It says between 7-8 inches for concrete residential buildings.

So I'll go with yes. Laura could just cut through the floor.

SNIKT.

Your claws slip easily through the solid metal of the door. Careful to avoid any potential mechanisms, you keep well away from the edges. The result is a vaguely circular shape starting at the base of the door and stretching upward, large enough for you and your companions to duck under.

No alarms. Yet.

Carefully, you begin to push the section you’ve carved free loose. There’s a chance it’ll topple when it slides free of the rest of the door, so you’ll have to be quick and catch it before it hits the ground.

Luckily, the shape you’ve cut is balanced well enough to stand on its own, and you pass through your impromptu doorway without a sound. The room inside is a sparsely-decorated entryway into the apartment proper, the walls and floor cast in an impeccable shade of white. There is a lowered piece of flooring just before the door where the floor is a light shade of beige – presumably for people to leave their shoes on.

You notice several pairs, all the same size and make.

In the corridor beyond you can see a set of stairs, and beyond that, a sheer glass wall allowing an unrestricted view of the balcony, or at least part of it.

You –

You seize up momentarily, as a loud, metallic bang shakes the floor beneath you. Nico swears under her breath.

You look back over your shoulder, and see Layla staring down at the cut-out piece of door lying at her feet, her mouth covered by her hands below a pair of wide, horrified eyes.

“…S-sorry!”

SNIKT! Again!

“Stay behind me.”

You feel that familiar clarity of purpose grip your limbs, spurring you on into a dash, your world streaking by, closing, cutting itself down to a point. The beating of your soles against the floor, the quickening of your heart, the feeling of air whistling along the edge of your claws – it settles you in a way you know no other manner of replicating, no other equal to.

And for some reason, this time, that makes you a little sick. How well you wear your Facility clothes.

You make for the balcony at breakneck speed, any pretense at stealth quickly sloughing away from you as you dash across the tiled flooring. Layla said the apartment’s only occupant was on the balcony.

His silhouette comes into view as you clear the corridor, a large, sparsely-decorated living space opening up around you, populated by assortments of neatly-arranged, minimalistic furniture. Zhang – you assume it’s Zhang – looks back at you from the edge of his balcony, his eyes widening, shaggy, dark hair billowing gently in the cool breeze. He has a gaunt, pale-faced look to him, like he’s slightly ill, or just very unconcerned with his sleeping patterns. A glass of dark red wine is slipping, instant by instant, from his grasp.

He smells… he smells of gourmet food and expensive hobbies. And cyanide.

You move automatically, effortlessly.

This man must be disabled. He likely has some manner of enhanced human abilities, so he must be disabled quickly, before he can put his talents – whatever they may be – into effect.

The gun is in your hand before the thought terminates. You level it with blinding speed – it’s not something you activate, something you tell yourself to do; it’s something drummed into your every pulse, your every nerve, something almost beyond you. Like a circuit moving through you and from you, independent of your thoughts, programmed to the beat of drums beyond your control, running currents sparked by distant generators.

He looks into your eyes. Before you pull the trigger – before you maim him – he looks into your eyes.

And for a moment, the circle breaks. The current stops, splits, sparking out of control. You hesitate.

It’s not him, not any kind of influence from his gaze. It’s you.

You feel sick. This makes you feel sick. You make you feel sick.

You pull the trigger.

The bullet passes through his kneecap, an explosion of brilliant, bright crimson following in its wake. But not the right kind of crimson.

The man’s shape twists, and blurs, as if smeared to one side by the force of the bullet, and he billows beyond his borders, expanding into a cloud of whirling, acrid red smoke. Like a star collapsing, the gaseous mass roils inward, compressing itself to a single, almost solid point... and rushes back out again with an immense, sibilant hiss.

The glass wall shatters, a hundred tiny shards cutting you to the bone, and you feel the sheer tidal force of the blast lift you off your feet.

>The glass wall shatters, a hundred tiny shards cutting you to the bone, and you feel the sheer tidal force of the blast lift you off your feet.

>>I'd be okay with that.
Sweet.May or may not happen at some point in the future.
>>
>>44313692
when's the last time you tried monkeying around with it
>>
>>44313692
Was it just akun being a buggy pile of something unpleasant that killed your enthusiasm, or did something happen with the actual session?
>>
>>44313739
>not explody?
It's a matter of magnitude. This guy can explode like a compressed air canister, not like an appreciable amount of high explosives.
>>
>>44313658
It'll happen when it happens.

>>44313676
Sure.

>>44313739
That's just him bursting outward as a gas. No heat or combustion or anything, just a pressure wave.

>>44313773
Probably about a week ago.

Anyway guys, I'm gonna have to head off.

I won't see you until after Boxing Day, so have yourselves a Merry Christmas, and always remember that Cyclops was right.
>>

>>
>>44314124

He believes the Ubermensch, mutants, should overtake the Untermensch, humans.

Yeah.

Nazi.

>>44314164

He's not.
>>
>>44314124
I really, really hope there's a comic where someone calls Mags a Nazi to his face at some point.
Just to see if he spontaneously combusts from sheer rage.

Yes, but Laura HATES her conditioning and that skill set. So while she was conditioned, without reinforcement the conditioning is probably wearing thin especially in light of how different the life she is leading now to the one before. JJ is also probably serving as a big security blanket for her, since he's one of the few people whose survived one of her trigger-scented rampages without major injury and he STILL cares for her inspite of that.

So yeah, Laura's vastly conflicted about her skillset and it seems like that conflict will only grow with time. One day, I hope that JJ grows powerful enough that Laura doesn't need to be a killer or a vigilante anymore, and she can find something fulfilling in her life that doesn't make her feel like a monster.
>>
>>44315301

Not that anon, but I think we should also tell her that it's not bad to have the training.

Horrible things happened to her, but why not take those skills and use them for good?
>>
>>44315532
I mean, they can translate into good things, though I worry that she feels her training is too tied up with her sense of identity as an assassin and that makes her too disgusted with it to reassure her. We should try our best though, and show that she can use those skills for something besides killing and vigilante work.

>"Don't worry, Laura, you have a shining future ahead of you in personal security! Or, I dunno, morgue work of some kind?"
