> [[ Underground: Averron Observatory – Artificer's Lab // Neutral Territory // PVP Disabled ]]

“This is nicer than I expected,” Ayla says, collecting the last of the machine parts as the party leaves the hidden Altar room. “I'll go find a spot and set up the communication hub. It shouldn't take long.”

“Let us know when you're done.” Kainzo says, as she waves you off and vanishes upstairs. “I'm eager to see what we're capable of here.”

You're about halfway through the lab when a humanoid—a clockwork automaton—shuffles up to you, and you're forced to stay your hand as you instinctively reach for your sword.

“Sir,” The Curator speaks in a tinny voice. “There are unauthorized guests in your company.”

“Every member of this party is a guest of honor, guardian.” Kainzo says. “Allow anyone to pass from outside, as well. This is neutral territory, after all. What types of facilities are available to us here?”

“For a price, an apothecary could be brought in from elsewhere to tend to the laboratory, as could the standard merchants one would encounter in a town—save for a fortune-teller, that is.” The automaton continues. “For anything out of the ordinary, I believe further negotiation with the Celestials would be necessary. If you'd like, I could begin—”

“Bring in one of everything, then. I don't care how much it costs.” Kainzo says.

“I can pay for it, if you'd like.” Andor says. “My guild and I have plenty of credits to spare.”

“You could charge a usage fee for the Resonator and whatever other equipment we have, if you needed to recoup costs.” You suggest.

“That's... a good idea, Ascheritte.” Kainzo turns back to the Curator. “Is there a way an NPC could handle that responsibility as well, automaton?”

The clockwork humanoid takes a deliberate, too-long pause before speaking. “Yes.”

“Good. We'll be around to gauge progress.” Kainzo says. The automaton shuffles off through the repaired lobby toward the upstairs, and you hear the sound of distant chimes. “I'll let the Guardians know of our success. Excellent work, everyone.”

With a click of his UI, Kainzo disbands the raid party and exits as well. Dorian's gone off with Ayla; you have no clue where Tatsumaki went.

“Good work feels like an understatement, after all that nonsense.” Nel sighs. “We got there, though.”

“Yeah!” Vyx says, offering you a high-five. “Nice job, uh... you.”

“My name is Ascheritte, Vyx.” You say. “This is the second time you've forgotten.”

“It sure is.” She grins. “And I didn't forget. I was totally testing you, and you passed. I promise.”

“I'm heading to the general store.” You say.

“Same.” Andor says. “I'll join you, if you don't mind.”

“Alright. I guess I'll look around here.” Nel says, yawning. “Maybe take a break.”

The Celestials are kind. They had the courtesy to fix the floor you blew up. Halfway up the spiral staircase, a short jeweled thing with long tendrils is welding a damaged part of the stair-rail.

“What's that?” You ask.

“Custodian. They're harmless.” Andor says. “I saw one in another branch once, when I was helping some new guildies with a mini-dungeon. We were basically killing everything in sight, and it was just following us around, cleaning up the mess.”

“Cool.” The Custodian ignores you as the two of you pass. “This is a lot of stuff, huh?”

“Don't worry, I'm as surprised as you are.” Andor says. “When you think about it, though, the offering at Averron gave us an entire town. I don't know if it's always going to be this easy, but it's certainly a blessing.”

One of the rooms upstairs has been converted into a somewhat cozy store-front. The NPC behind the counter resembles a man-sized brown owl, dressed in a fancy hat and vest. It looks like he's wearing a pair of thick magnifying lenses.

“Welcome, milord. We'll have a selection from the apothecary soon.” He nods. “Important business, I assume?”

“What is a potion of sickness?” You ask.

“It contains a biological toxin, made from tops of moonroot extract and distilled cryptbloom.” The shopkeep says. “It's used to quench biological activity in alchemy. Take caution not to inject or ingest it.”

“Mm.” You shrug, then spread out a selection of items on the counter, as if to test the NPC's capacity for thought. “What about these?”

“This headband is a style piece, woven from araneid silk and available in numerous colors. Wood grain rings are waterproof and highly receptive to enchantment. A mortar and pestle allows the user to prepare extracts from plants. A free action potion renders the imbiber invulnerable to most stunning and paralytic effects for several seconds. A message carving can be encoded with a short voice message.”

“What's that thing with the crank on it?” Andor asks.

“A plant extrusion identifier allows the safe extraction of seeds from unknown plants. The process identifies the name and properties of the plant.”

“Oh, fancy.” Andor says. “I'll get Ayla to buy us one.”

“I do not know. Someone who is more familiar with magic arts might. These bags were first made by a Precursor, and are in limited supply now.” The owl says. “If you carry many bags, be sure to label them carefully. I've heard they can cause dangerous things to happen.”

One of the basement rooms has been converted to this place—a bridge leading to a large, circular platform, suspended over an abyss. Storage chests and bins are scattered around the platform. In the center, it slopes downward into a pit of purple flame that illuminates the whole of the room; floating a few feet above it is a partially-melted ingot, that the forgemaster—a levitating mess of armor and bandages suspended in raw energy—is working with.

“Are you a blacksmith?” You ask.

“No,” it says loudly, “I am much more.”

“This looks about the same as the last forge I saw.” You respond.

“You are correct, Keeper. Invest in me, then.” It makes a sound close to laughing. “Then, you will see.”

“What can I get with fractalline crystals?” You ask.

“They are the primary component in modern ranged weapons. Shots from resonant weapons splash to nearby targets more effectively, while raw crystals have no additional effects beyond their high purity and receptiveness to enchantment.” The forgemaster says. “With a forge more similar to those of old, however, I could craft an ancient melee weapon called a fluxsabre. They were once admired for their elegance.”

“Ceramic plates?”

“Gunners and artificers commonly request reinforced robes and overcoats. These are a simple first resort, as they can be woven between fabric and do not hinder movement or the use of magical foci.”

“Worm teeth?”

“Those organisms are known for their ability to chew through Earth, as well as their poisoned bite. But I cannot promise you success in the same endeavors.”

“Sliverwings?”

“Ah, yes. The composition of their exoskeleton is similar to a rare metal. It would make good armor, or a fine housing for a long-gun.”

“What about this homunculus claw?” You ask.

“It could be fashioned into a small bladed weapon or polearm, perhaps. A weapon like that would carry an aura of fear with it—though you might imagine the effects would be limited on those smart enough to leave their fear behind on the battlefield.”

“Can I make aethersteel?” You ask.

“No.” It says. “But I can. Aethersteel is harvested from areas of high magical corruption, but can be made artificially by melting magical crystals into any light metal. Fractallines work well, but are particularly low yield. One would have to venture deeper underground for a better option.”

He thinks I went after the dead love of Kjorikos for the celestial gem in her brooch. While I did want it, everyone making it through alive was more important, and it did what I though it would do, if not in the way expected, end the fight. Because we were getting our asses handed to us til then.

Short range combat. that should be better than the iron scimitar. For cramped spaces where using a great sword wouldn't be the best weapon to use.

this.
but i'd go Titan's strength. and a shield would be fine. Shield and Great sword combo. Since you want defense That would solve the problem.

I agree with you. But last time there was a bunch more people for a more balanced character. Or just more towards being the party tank.

And over whelming offensive power would be two 2Handed weapons in each hand. Since thats what Titans strength could acchive with
* Natural-born Fighter [[ Passive - MAX ]]: Gain basic skill in wielded standard melee weapons.
* Two-handed Mastery [[ Passive - MAX ]]: Increases the effectiveness of two-handed weapons. Two-handed weapons are easier to use.

After the getting * Titan's Strength // Passive // The user can comfortably wield a two-handed melee weapon in a single hand. Reduces buildup of Fatigue when wielding oversized weapons. Required for “Titan's Grip”.

* Dual Wield Mastery // Passive // Increases the chance to hit with a weapon wielded in the off-hand. Required for "Cross Strike", "Titan's Grip".
Could work out nicely and Its required for Titans grip that should be another boon to 2handed weapons.

That depends on what he is disappointed in. I can think of a few things that I could have improved on, but I'd also appreciate the insight.

[[ 2 ]]
Sell junk items.

Other unrelated ideas - I think it would be a good idea to create a small stash of money and supplies. We can either hide it somewhere or give it to someone we trust. If we die or lose our other equipment, we have a decent fallback.

An additional idea - the Nameless seem to only be a problem because of numbers, and because they seem so disillusioned. But many of them would have had friends, parties or guilds before dying. Part of this is because they respawn somewhere random and can't use the game features to contact anyone, right? Once contact is made with other cities, we should help set up some sort of network to help them get back to potential allies. That way they're not joining Freakshow or something. Hell, it could even help just having something like that locally.

You sell your starting boots and pants for a whopping fifty credits, to a total of 179. You wonder, for approximately three seconds, if anyone's ever sold their pants to buy a potion.

“One more thing, before I go.” You say. “Could I combine these plates and armor scraps to make a light shield? Or apply worm teeth to my boots for better climbing?”

“You would not be satisfied with either result.” It says. “Those armor scraps could be used to decorate, or perhaps enhance, a small shield or a weapon such as a dagger or knife. Not even my great skill can predict the results, and cannot promise they would be more than cosmetic.”

I don't want to invest all those points into STR dual-wielding. EVEN IF we found a fighting style that uses two heavy weapons of similar(because they both need to be big to be heavy) size that makes more sense than sword-chucks, the XP and gear investment would leave us slowly losing tank status and entering glass canon.

Would be a wise choice none the less. As we would keep our currents fighting style while also giving us the ability to use a shield along with our current weapon that would be easier to wield. Which would make us more of a tank.
But yeah, it would make us more of a glass cannon but also effectively making fights faster at the cost of taking more damage. Which would mean investing more money into gear while we prioritize exp/points into doing more damage that would be the trade off.

Are we using the Gems for anything in particular? Having a pet would be cool to have. But also we Could also make the armor with the gems. And go glass cannon but not really glass since our armor would be pretty good.

> [[ Underground: Averron Observatory – Test Chamber // Neutral Territory // PVP Disabled ]]

It's an immaculate white room, past a marble door on one of the upper floors, close to where you rescued Nel from the room of dolls. The room opens up onto a small observation terrace; stairs on either side, with sliding barricades available, lead down onto a large, circular floor.

A large capsule, flush with the floor in the center of the room, contains a homunculus—you shudder instinctively, before you note its utter lack of features. It's not Velika; rather, it's just a blank humanoid slate.

“Hello, milord.” A pair of stout, spear-wielding wolf-like creatures in full lamellar stands guard, one on either side of the entrance. “Let us know if you'd like to charge a usage fee for this place; those things aren't cheap. And if you'd like to stop a test, just have someone down on the floor shout 'STOP'. The louder, the better.”

A holographic console screen emerges in front of you as you arrive in the middle of the room.

The barricades close, as does the door to the room; when you begin the battle, a blue wire-frame field flashes across your body. The capsule rises up in front of you, and opens, depositing a staff-wielding dummy into the middle of the ring before retreating back into the ground. It assumes a fighting stance, defending as you draw your weapon.

You weapon can be wielded with one or both hands, which leaves you in a slightly awkward place. You don't notice much of a difference until you take it in two; it seems comparatively more stable now, and you imagine you could muster a much more damaging swing now. You take a tentative overhead swing toward the dummy, slowing down as you come within proximity; it raises the staff horizontally, and there's a resonant 'tap' as your weapons softly rebound against one another.

You withdraw, and it assumes a neutral stance.

Alright, this time for real.

You work out a going rate that will earn the Observatory a few credits per test. Perhaps you could use it to get better security? As it is, the place is quiet. You, Andor, Ayla, and Kainzo have total control over the zone, and PVP is disabled. What, then, could happen to go wrong?

You're not sure, but you know it's going to be fucking -something- the way this game's been treating you lately.

You head to Kjorikos's old room, near the top of the facility. On your way, you pass the banquet table; where it looks like everything is missing except the fountain of vitae, a permanent fixture into this place. You make a note to try bottling some, but you figure there's got to be some catch that prevents you from making convenient use of it if there's just an infinite amount flowing there.

> [[ Underground: Averron Observatory – “Sylvetica” // Neutral Territory // PVP Disabled ]]

Fully repaired.

It's as beautiful as Ayla wanted. She'll be happy when she gets the chance to come up here, you think. It'll probably be a good roleplaying spot. Tall grass and lovely flowers like hydrangeas spread out in rings from the entrance, leading you towards the woods you battled Kjorikos in. Toward the sun, there's a large dirt patch on a riverbank where Dorian's kneeling, carefully inspecting flower growths. In a clearing in the woods, you can see Vyx cartwheeling around happily. About fifteen feet to your left, there's an Obsidian Pegasus, walking around in the tall grass.

It tilts its head, investigating you briefly.

“I guess it doesn't help that my armor is kind of made of you, huh?” You ask.

I too wanna make a guild. Though I'm not sure what niche we could fill that isn't already filled with the three main ones. If you wanna go RP but also wanna not RP sometimes, you can do that in the Writ Keepers already, and the super serious Crimson Guardians has been around longer and has a bigger base, so we'd be slow to build a rival Guild. And there's already a guild for filthy casuals.

The drama of dealing with a democracy in real life Guilds already makes me break out in hives. No guild can really "work" and still be fun without a leader+officers setup. The people joining and giving up power trade it for the ability to go on raids, PVP together and gain information.

Retain a veto, if you do go all democratic.

“Hi.” You say, and she's startled mid-cartwheel, falling onto her back and spreading herself out in the grass.

“Hiya!” She says. “Whatcha' up to?”

“Not much.” You sigh. “I got cold-shouldered by a headless rock horse.”

“Oh, sad day. Don't worry, though,” She says. “There's always next time.”

“Why are you so happy?” You ask.

“Cause,” Vyx laughs, then springs to her feet, posing with both of her guns held high. “I'm a proper member of the Crimson Guardians! It's hype as fuck, and I don't know what to do about it. Apparently, they liked me. Who'd have thought?”

“Dunno. I've got the feeling they hate me.” You say. “At least, Kainzo does.”

“Oh, well, he's a pain in the dick anyway.” She shrugs. “I bugged him from the start—he says I get bored easily, and I'm like, yeah, like everyone playing this game. Mendicant and Florica are cool, though. And I guess Liza's alright, when she doesn't have an enchanter's rod stuffed up her ass. So what's one or two douchebags on the fastest road to the top?”

“I guess.” You shrug. “I feel like there might have been some misgivings back there in the boss fight, though.”

“You made it, we all made it. You did fine.” Vyx falls backwards, rolling over in the grass. “People are gonna have high emotions. So don't pressure yourself about it.”

You begin again, but feel it'd somehow be wrong of you to interrupt her continued laughter.

“Sitting in the dirt?” You ask, chuckling as you approach. “I thought the Writ Keepers were a good fit for you, but I'm glad you've finally found a place you belong.”

“Oh, hush.” Dorian glares. “If you're looking for a new playmate, I'm afraid I'm much too busy at the moment. And this time, I'm afraid my commanding officer is as well—far too busy to fraternize with the likes of you.”

“I was kidding, you fucking popsicle.” You say.

“Well, regardless. You're finally out of luck.” He responds with a groan.

“I guess my luck has been sub-par recently, yeah.” You shrug. “Just means I've got nowhere to go but up. What are you up to?”

“Assuming my conjecture is correct, the conditions here mimic those on the surface—which means we can probably learn about the game and what we have coming to us by seeing how things react here.” He says. “More importantly, plots like this give us an opportunity to grow plants in conditions we simply can't match in Averron's gardens. With further investment we might be able to get dynamic weather—day and night, or even a changing of the seasons.”

“Sounds interesting, I guess. Can we build a healing potion farm?” You ask.

“That would be the most obvious application of this avenue, yes.” Dorian replies. “Next time you or one of the other landlords can, see if you can hire an NPC or two to take care of the garden. The Custodians might just throw away all of the plants.”

“Yeah, we'll do that.” You say. “Hey, there's some kind of seed extractor in the general store downstairs, if that's something you need.”

“Oh, truly?” He asks, standing and dusting himself off. “It certainly is. I... do appreciate the information, Ascheritte. Thank you.”

"Mhm." You wait by the plot, taking in the surroundings as he heads off for the exit.

> [[ Underground: Averron Observatory – Celestial Chapel // Neutral Territory // PVP Disabled ]]

The puzzle box is a permanent fixture in the bookcase; now, the secret room will open only for its owners or those granted explicit permission.

There is a Greater Celestial Materialization Altar here. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. Carved from a single slab of white marble, it depicts a man cradling a dying woman in his arms, her head tilted back, empty eyes forever fixated on the heavens. In her lap is a bowl, decorated in gold, awaiting an offering.

Oh, it's got your name on it, also.

Convert Silverfish Boots to have Featherfall/Airwalk. Focus on low PP cost and ease of activation over duration.

Convert Cloak to do any of: Resist status ailments, Resist aoe, or just boost the Resist elem

Eunoia cost PP and I imagine anything we want to use at will repeatedly or permanently will too.

>>44317157
Impulse buys are bad
>>
>>44317145
I think the mechanics are actually, when you equip an artifact, you commit a certain about of your base PP to the artifact's functioning. So like if you ordinarily have 28 PP, and equipping one makes you commit 10 PP to it while worn, you can only draw from a pool of 18 PP while you have it on.

That's how it worked with Sybil's artifact anyway. It might not be the case with other ones, but I don't see why not. Most good things come at a cost.
>>
>>44317194
I bet you save elixirs until after the final boss.

Besides, we can commit 3 max PP. We're not getting anything huge(yet).
>>
>>44317216
Anything worth our time will likely cost more than PP. Eunoai cost ALL or Aelriss's pp for limited heals and dps. It also has a cooldown.

“Ascheritte.” Liza waves at you from the opposite end of the hallway as you make it up to the hub. Andor and Kainzo are with her.

“Hey.” You gesture to the door. “I'm guessing she's done in there?”

“Must be.” Andor says. “Only one way to find out.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzseE_0Zo3w

The door opens automatically as you approach, marble walls slowly sliding apart on unseen hinges with a satisfying sound. It's just a little bit dark, and there's the quiet beeping of machines inside. The four of you make your way down the stairs onto the floor proper.

Ayla must have been waiting on this—carrying the stuff for a while, at least—as she's already carved out a nice place for herself. The walls are abuzz with bits of technology, which you think Kjorikos had set up prior, given the amount of relevant communications pieces he had lying around. There's something that looks like a big projector screen on the same wall as the message board server.

“We can video people in the same way you make calls. This holographic stuff, I thought, must be cut from the same mold as the Unique Identifiers.” Ayla says. “I'm not sure if it is, but it's positively ancient.”

“Have you brought the message boards back up?” Liza says.

“Waiting for everyone's confirmation.” Ayla responds, maneuvering over to the server. “We're ready to go.”

“Do it, then.” Andor nods, and Ayla flicks a switch, bringing the waist-height console to life. All of the UIs in the room begin to ping repeatedly with notifications. The message boards are back online; ongoing discoveries can be shared, and you're no longer in an information blackout. You'll check them out whenever you can. “Oh. That's a lot of notifications. I'm not sure what I was expecting."

> [[ Continued ]]

>hell, we don't even know how many of Aelriss' PP went into this.

"I think there's another cost to using Celestial Artifacts." Nel says.

"He's right. The artifact required me to commit all of my PP to use it, and I didn't have a whole lot to begin with." Aelress says. "I could use my abilities, if I unbound it, but that takes forever."
>>
>>44317391
How many as in the exact number. If it's 8, then whatever we make is very, very feasible.
>>
>>44317387

“I'm thoroughly impressed with you lot.” Liza says, navigating her UI menu. “Everything looks fully functional. I'll check back in with the prospectives for the Excavator once people start realizing the boards are up. We've got -a lot- to talk about.”

“A few things before that, though. We'll need to heighten security in this place.” Kainzo says.

“My guild can use the Observatory as an away base. We'll have dependable people on hand.” Andor says. “We've got the numbers. If you want to station officers somewhere, be my guest.”

“You've got Gems, don't you?” You turn to the door—Dorian's coming in. “We could spend a donation to warp in some elite guardians. I think it's worth it.”

“Particulars, particulars. We've got resources; we'll sort them out in time. Alright, Ayla.” Liza says, tapping her foot. “Tell us about that ansible tech you were on about before the expedition. How are we on communication with other cities?”

“I don't know our maximum range,” Ayla says, accessing a console, “And we don't have any projections on how large the world is. But we're technically able to communicate with any city that has the same tech level as us or higher. It's all set up—I could send out a search right now.”

“Do it.” Kainzo says. “I doubt you'll find any, though. This place has definitely skyrocketed us In terms of technology. If anything, they'll be right on-par with us.”

There's a few pings, and Ayla looks surprised.

“Well, you're wrong about not finding any.” She says. “I've got two. Allestria, and Hecatelia.”

“All of it?” Ayla begins flipping switches. “Can do.”

“I swear, Ascheritte, if you say something stupid...” Dorian begins.

“Anyone that wants to talk can.” You respond—there's the sound of microphone feedback.

“Test.” Ayla says, and you feel a reverberation from your UI. “Alright, we're on board.”

“Hi!” Andor shouts. “We are representatives of the Averron Alliance, broadcasting to you from the Communications Facility of the new Averron Observatory.”

“Yep, yep.” You add. “We've got it all up and running. Thank the Alliance, my rowdy bunch, and in particular, Ayla of the Writ Keepers.”

“A genius in our time.” Dorian adds.

“The message boards are online, and we're on the verge of establishing contact with other cities.” Liza says. “We hit a rough patch, but these individuals have proven that through cooperation, no obstacle can stand in our way. It's up to us to carve a path ahead—through the underground, toward the lands above. Mapping of the branches below Averron, as well as progress on the bestiary, will continue as soon as possible. To those who believe themselves fit to continue the project of Excavation? Report to the Observatory immediately.”

“Send a map,” you whisper, and Ayla begins pushing buttons.

“Thanks for your time, and safe travels.” She closes, before cutting comms. “That went alright.”

“The 'genius' thing was a bit goofy.” Kainzo says. “But we got the point across. Let's fire up the link again and see if we can send to another city.”

You contact Allestria first. There's a buzzing, and static comes on the projector before an image comes through. A ragtag bunch, looking not unlike your group, takes form. You get the impression they're huddled around a small computer monitor; the backdrop looks like something between an airplane hangar and a church, which is a decidedly strange combination.

“Hey, someone's coming through! Hi!” The one in front, a buck-toothed kid with messy hair and oversized goggles shouts, giving you a huge smile and wave; the audio is a bit desynced, and the picture is pretty low quality. “You're Averron?”

“We are.” Ayla says, everyone looking to be in a bit of disbelief. “You're Allestria? It's good to finally make contact. How'd you get your tech online?”

“Scavenged.” A woman in the back says. You hear a single, incredibly loud gunshot—like a cannon firing—and the screen flashes. “We're actually in an active dungeon, and some people are not very happy about us making use of the facilities.”

“If you beat the boss, try and find an Altar and take over the area.” Kainzo says. “You'll be able to use it as a hub. Hopefully, you'll find enough Gems nearby to do it right off the bat.”

“That was the plan!” The goggled-kid says. “Heard that, everyone? Loot hoard, dead ahead!”

“What's your circumstance, Averron?” The woman asks.

“Just took over a madman Artificer's observatory.” Andor says. “Does the word 'Precursor' mean anything to any of you lot?”

“Nope.” The woman responds. “I've never heard it, at least.”

Through continued conversation, you find that Allestria isn't unlike Averron; a walled city with a pair of guilds formed by the city's founding members keeping peace and making rules. They, too, have had trouble with the Nameless.

You explain that Precursors are highly intelligent NPCs that hoard Celestial Gems; you note they're highly powerful, and warn them not to fall for any traps as you did. Kainzo raises an eyebrow at this, but you're sure he's not appeased.

“Have you had contact with other cities?” You ask.

“Other people have tried similar things before, but we've only just got online here.” Another man says. “There's been talk among the guilds of brief communications with some other distant towns, but no one's been able to keep a link open for super long. We know a little bit. There's another two names here on our list. Hecatelia, and Veska?”

“We've heard of the former.” Andor says. “You must be between us and the latter.”

“Or Hecatelia's tech could be through the roof.” Ayla says.

“If we can get this place secure,” The woman adds, “We'll get back to you as soon as possible. We'll tell everyone we can. We can send you maps. Maybe the geography can show us where we are in relation to one another.”

“We could trade.” Ayla says. “If a route was forged. We can tell you what we know now about the requisite technology.”

“Have you heard of a guild called Freakshow?” Liza asks. “Does the name 'Anaximander' mean anything to you?”

“Seen some pretty strange guilds, but none like that.” The man says. “Why?”

“Don't worry about it,” Kainzo says. “But keep an eye out. They're untrustworthy folk.”

There's an explosion in the distance of the video feed.

“Alright,” The goggled kid says. “We've got work to do. Averron? We'll see you soon.”

“Yeah.” Ayla says. “Good luck, Allestria.”

The feed snaps off.

“Alright, now Hecatelia?” Kainzo asks.

You hear a loud buzz from Ayla's console.

“Uhm, actually, they're contacting us.” Ayla says.

“Put them through.” Liza says.

“Alright, now Hecatelia?” Kainzo asks.

You hear a loud buzz from Ayla's console.

“Uhm, actually, they're contacting us.” Ayla says.

“Put them through.” Liza says.

The feed starts with no interruption. It's a wide angle of a barely-dressed woman, crowned Queen of an oracle's throne. What you see in the distance brings to mind an image of an underground castle or palace, with jeweled granite walls and decorative arches; enshrining the place, faintly glowing steam rises from hot springs in the ground. It looks like high definition video—and that ornamental crown looks so close you could touch it.

“Are you stable?” She asks, sounding a bit sultry, and seems satisfied when the video lasts more than a few seconds. You hear people quietly chattering in the background. “Oh, finally. I was beginning to worry we were the only ones out there. Your quality looks decent, as well. Certainly not bad for first contact.”

“Hecatelia?” Liza asks.

“Please,” The Queen responds, “Hecatel. And you?”

“Averron.”

“No, darling. Your name?”

“Ayla.”

“Andor.”

“Ascheritte.”

“Dorian.”

“Liza.”

You'd swear the Queen raised an eyebrow at that last one.

“You're the leader of your city?” Kainzo asks.

“I am.” She responds.

“One guild?” You ask. “You delegate to your officers, then?”

“I have none.” There's a pause, then she shrugs, unperturbed. You exchange nervous glances, feeling somehow snuffed out in her presence.

And if she is a player, how the fuck she managed to set herself up as a monarch.

“She's a Precursor.” You say, looking up at the way she adjusts herself, turning away from the frame slightly. There's the slightest glint against her hip, where a UI would go—a tiny line of light—but hidden from full view by that burgundy silken shroud that preserves her modesty. You can't tell. It could be a sword, a dagger, some focus, or an illusion. Fuck if you haven't made up your mind. “There's no way she's not. You're a Precursor.”

“Ascheritte, was it? Tell me: should I be honored that my power humbles you?” She asks. “Or offended, that you would compare me to one of those dry, covetous machines?”

“I apologize, Hecatel.” Ayla says to Hecatel, but she grits her teeth and gives you a knowing nod when she does. “What can you tell us about your city?”

“It's a fine place. My palace and its grounds comprise the innermost circle,” She says, “But my guild is large—despite the fact that I've given my members the opportunity to choose particular roles rather than assigning them to a strict organizational hierarchy. There are unique public facilities available here; members of my guild protect the city as they like, and protect the palace as they like. And I do as well—it belongs to all of us.”

“What about the Nameless?” You ask.

“Exiled, as they crop up. The ones that aren't killed for attempting attacks on players, that is.” Hecatel says. “I'm a proponent of fairness, of course, but they are quick to cause trouble. More than they're worth. But we've yet to figure out a way to help them, so they've got themselves a nice town in the lower branches. At least, I've heard it's nice. I've never been. But they don't cause trouble.”

“If you're not a Precursor, what do you know about them?” You ask. “The ones I've encountered haven't seemed all that dry to me.”

“I'm told Celestial Gems are complicated little things.” Hecatel says. “Do you think so? Whatever they're full of might have a way of affording something that seems like intelligence to even a computer program. We all see so many different strong emotions within them—it stands to reason that at least one of those emotions would be applicable in any situation.”

She pauses, looking out of shot. You hear someone chattering quietly, and she nods.

“Oh?” She says. “I've been told to say that 'Gems are complicated beasts, and Precursors are simple animals'. I suppose that shortens it.”

“Yeah, fucking right.” Ayla says, under her breath. You're not sure if you agree either.

“So, what?” Kainzo asks. “Everything's just perfect over there?”

“No, no. Not at all. Did I give you the impression?” The Queen asks. “Yes, we have terrorists. Awful ones. An entire guild of players is trying to stop us from digging up to the surface—can you believe it?”

“Why?” Ayla asks, stepping forward.

“Oh, I wish I knew.” She says. “I've a feeling that someone's finally managed to figure out something that I haven't figured out, and this is their way of lording it over me. Their last attack caught us by surprise. Not only was our Excavator rendered temporarily unusable—I lost one of my most reliable allies. It makes me think of what I might have done differently.”

All of you seem to hang on the fact that they had—at least, for a while—a functioning Excavator.

“Actually, we're trying to work out Scrying now.” Hecatel shrugs. “Honestly, you would think we'd have come up with that first, but, twenty-twenty hindsight. Once we do, we'll be able to pinpoint the locations of other towns, hopefully, and make allies before we try for the surface again.”

“Hopefully?”

“Well, it might not work. You never know who you might meet out there, right?” She gives a wicked grin. “And, also, our communications technology reaches further than that of any city we're aware exists by a hilarious factor. Once we're done here, I'll be sending over some maps and important information that might be useful to you. We can discuss what we know more in-detail after we've had the opportunity to research.”

No one in the room—Liza especially—seems to be having a good time.

“If you're really a player, then how the fuck did you set yourself up as a monarch?” You ask.

“It helps when your name is the only one on the Materialization Altar. There's no power struggles. No conflicts of interest.” You look around the room as she speaks, and you can tell the Alliance members are trying not to look at each other. “Everything becomes exactly as reasonable as you are a person. But, luck always plays a role in becoming a Queen. Play your cards right, and you might end up on the throne.”

“Hecatel, listen up.” Liza asks. “Do you know of a guild called Freakshow, or of a man named Anaximander?”

“Hm?” The Queen tilts her head. “...Actually, yes, in fact. Someone by that name was right here in my court not too long ago...”

oh god fucking damn it

Hecatelia is the very first on our hit list, but we're gonna need a massive power boost in order to depose her. This shit doesn't sit right with me at all.

My shadowrunning is strong here, but I guarantee that she's got some shit going down with Anaximander. Hell, Hecatel probably has a lot of artifacts-- if she's a player-- or worse, is just a straight up precursor. Either way, I'm betting that the chances of her getting her name on an altar by itself isn't just 'luck'.

This. If only I didn't live in a timezone where I miss half these threads.

Anyway, most of these suggestions for celestial artifacts are lame. The boots especially are just budget wings.

We were told that the best results come from having a clear desire in mind when creating one, so I definitely think we should hold off until we can come to some consensus on something decent.

And so, some suggestions:
- Something that gives us control over time. This will be something that is useful with a few gems to start with but which has massive potential for gem dumping. At a low level it would give us speed and reflex boosts, perhaps either minor ones for long duration or more notable ones for a brief burst at crucial points. When it starts getting levelled it could perhaps allow us to do microflickers of timestop, enough for us to dodge hits last second and close the gaps needed to land a hit when opponents aren't expecting it. Obviously at higher levels again you can start having much longer timestops, and endgame time control if things can progress that far. (No doubt there would be some kinda exponential gem cost by this point). Other things that may be possible would be weaving time to produce clones of ourselves for brief moments. Dunno what the artifact would manifest as, maybe a pocket watch or a pendant clock or something.
- Some kind of artifact that improves our exploration abilities. Some kind of innate pathfinding, or something that boosts are propensity to finding more loot. Or perhaps some kind of eyewear that gives us keener vision, including being able to notice details like far off celestial gems. Depending on what form this artifact would take it could easily be something we don't upgrade ever, but which acts as a springboard to faster gem gaining rate and thus being able to get another artifact and upgrade it more quickly

(Cont.)
>>
>>44320412
It's only a single - to mobility.
>>
>>44320412
- an artifact that allows us to gauge the potential friendliness of NPCs. Perhaps some kind of empathic effect, or being able to see their tangle of emotions that drives them, or something. Having dealt with Kjorikos I can't help but feel we might well find ourselves in situations where a silver tongue could be more rewarding than a big sword. (This isn't really something I'd go for, but hopefully acts as fuel for thought for more interesting artifacts than BELT OF STRENGTH). I figure we would be able to delve deeper in the lore with something like this though
- I forgot what I was going to add, distracted by my brother

Anyway, I don't think we should rush into making one as soon as we can unless we actually KNOW what we want, and I also think we can dream a bit bigger than the suggestions so far. The cloak of temp invulnerability could be good though, no doubt the fact it's only effective on the bearer would allow us to use it more than Kainzo's shield since his can protect multiple allies.

>>44320433
I haven't the slightest idea what you're trying to say.
>>
>>44320511
>you guys dropped our speed and dodging ability
A response to that.
>>
>>44320412
>>44320511
Only the time control sounds good to be honest.
>>
>>44320550
Oh yeah, my bad, I forgot where I started with that post. Yeah, hopefully it won't be much of a hindrance, I just felt it would have been better to get the option that didn't drop mobility.

>>44320560
I agree, certainly it's the option I'd pick out of the bunch by virtue of offering an artifact we can 'main'. Makes everything simpler if we aren't trying to make new artifacts aimlessly again down the road. They were more suggestions to try and provoke thinking a bit wider.
>>
>>44320606
Time control most likely will be a massive CG drain though
>>
>>44320632
Pp too. But it's the best idea I've seen for an artifact. If we save for it that is. Also a watch would fit Tech Knight theme.
>>
>>44320632
CG cost is proportional to gud. You get what you pay for.
I envisage it as midtier being good value for money, and that pressing higher than that would probably be horrendously expensive. Whether it would be a prudent move to pursue the benefits of high level time control at that stage in the quest or just shell out for a quick and shiny weapon artifact or something when we get that far is up to speculation.

The point though is that a time control artifact is one which would conceivably be a good gem dump at any tier. Something you know you're always gonna use, something that will always be useful in every combat situation (unless we somehow find a foe that only negates time manipulation but not gems in general?),

>>44320651
Yeah, Tick Tock Tech Knight is a nice theme.
>>
>>44320412
>>44320412
>budget wings
Yes, that was the intention. If you hadn't noticed, much of this thread was saying that we dont have PP for anything big.

Weve got 3 gems, why do you think our first artifact needs to be super unique?

Now im all for ticktock, but that sounds like youre deciding the rest of our build for us by requiring a huge long term investment on PP.

And youre exploration thingie sounds like thw goggles
>>
>>44320906
Liza's first wings
Aelriss's first netted her a familiar

Artifacts are a big deal patience is key. If we need to we can take Nel level grinding/ Cg hunting. Maybe a few other peeps too.
>>
>>44320906
>Yes, that was the intention. If you hadn't noticed, much of this thread was saying that we dont have PP for anything big.
We can get more PP. We'll inevitably need to level up PP at some point, I see no harm in getting an artifact that is needs more PP than we can comfortably spare right now if it's an artifact that will last us whereas getting a bad artifact with the proviso that it's immediately usable just doesn't sit right with me.

Treat these as gifts from the gods, since that is what they roughly amount to in this game. You wouldn't ask for something you intend to throw away later.
>>
>>44321369
And? That doesnt tell me anything, PLUS theyve got the PP to spare.
>>
>>44321448
Anything time related will cost more than 3 gems I can guarantee that. We'll have time to put a point or two in PP. Impulse spending is stupid given how rare these things are. Also EVERY artifact is a gift from the Gods, thus unique. I doubt any two are the same. Thus I'd rather go with a cool and useful idea rather than a budget rehash.
