Become The Vampire 19

You send Catherine one last message to see what's going on with her and finally get a reply. It's pretty long, and the time stamp indicates she sent it right around the time that track let out. It's a solid page of eloquently written text, but it basically boils down to:

I have to go to a party tonight, my cousin is making me come along, he doesn't want me hanging out with strangers, I'm sorry about this. Also this message will probably send late, there's poor reception near the pool and my phone got a little waterlogged last time there was a party so it doesn't work properly sometimes. My physics teacher offered to replace it for me but I'm unsure if I should take him up on his offer. If I don't hear back from you, I'll just assume my phone isn't working.

Attached to the message is a text file, a typed version of your compiled notes along with hers, forming the full bible of the religion. It's pretty much exactly what you had in mind, complete with florid prose to obscure the meaning so you can reinterpret it as needed. You send her a quick thank you message letting her know you got the file and hope that her phone starts working again, as well as to call when she's free so you can go over things one last time.

You look at your phone for a few moments. Sammy still wants to hang out, and that should make you happy, but after what the vampires said and her reaction to you hanging out with the paranormal club, you're not so sure. On the one hand, she could just be upset that she couldn't apologize to you properly. Maybe she had something planned to make things up to you? On the other hand, she could take after her mother after all.

>Go hang out with Sammy
>Head back to your room and work on magic stuff

3 am is an hour before I get off work, so it's fine for me. Anon here >>44324462 must have a bedtime.

You text Sammy and let her know you're on your way. It isn't really fair to just leave her hanging all day long. Plus, you won't know what her game is unless you talk to her. You head for your room first to drop off your bag so Presence doesn't cause an issue, but Sammy texts back right away and asks you to come to her room, and you head there first. It's not super late yet, but if you take any detours then you'll be out late and risk being tired tomorrow. Tired is the absolute last thing you want to be in this school, aside from dead.

You knock gently on the door, and Sammy opens it a crack before grabbing you by the collar and pulling you into her room. She hugs you tightly, pinning you to the door and leaning on you. Her tail wags behind her, and she rests her head on your shoulder. You stroke her back gently while trying to find the words to tell her that she's crushing you a bit.

“I'm sorry about earlier... I was just really looking forward to making things up to you, and then you were suddenly busy... I thought you'd still be at the club, but I wasn't sure... I'm glad you're here though.”

>Apology accepted. It's all good.
>How did you plan to make things up to me, exactly?
>It was honestly a little bitchy, it caught me off guard.
>Do you know what the vampires are saying about you?
>I have a confession to make, about this morning...

You send Jennifer a message on the way to your room to ask her what's going on at home and if Patrick is getting himself in trouble. The response is pretty quick, but also kind of troubling.

“Patrick isn't getting himself in trouble. In a way, that's the problem. He's shattered and terrified of himself, and whenever he shifts he goes completely berserk now. While I was away he threw himself a pity party with the others, went wild, and now people are questioning if he's a suitable leader. He's still strong enough to hold the pack together, but now that his confidence is shot he isn't using that strength well at all. The evidence regarding Mark has been passed along to the appropriate people, and I'm making good use of it, but if the pack falls apart then it's for nothing. I'm working with Stephen on a solution.”

-

“So, uh... How exactly did you plan to make things up to me?”

Sammy releases you and blushes, smiling. Now that you're not pinned to the door and can actually look at her, she's wearing a cutesy pink apron with a heart on the front.

“Well, you said my cooking wasn't... lethal, so I decided I'd try and polish my skills a little more and make you something special. I was in the cooking classroom after track.”

She turns around and grabs a large box, turning around and presenting you with a pie.

“It's apple. I hope you like it.”

You accept the box with a smile, but your stomach is already acting rebellious at the thought. Stay strong, digestive organs. It'll all be over soon.

“I really appreciate the gift.”

You walk over to her bed and sit down.

“By the by, did you hear what the vampires are saying about you? They think you're some kind of political mastermind. One of them even said you were using me, how crazy is that?”

Sammy's eyes widen a bit.

“Th-They... what...?”

She looks genuinely shocked. You examine her expression as discretely as you can. It looks honest, but...
>>
“Yeah. Two of them were talking about you earlier. They were saying something about using you to get to me being a bad plan, and how because you've got your claws in me, I'm useless to them.”

Sammy's ears droop a bit and she fidgets.

“...and... what do you think...? Do you really think that I'm... dangerous...?”

>You tell me. What should I believe?
>I don't think you're dangerous. I already said that I trust you.

Christ, why are people suspecting Sammy more than Jennifer?
>>
>>44324858
Jennifer was already under the truth spell. She was willing to completely submit to anything we wanted to ask.

Sure, she's a self-admitted manipulator, but she's manipulating on our behalf.
>>
>>44324887
Is she? Is she really?
>>
>>44324784
This.
>>
>>44324897
Yep. Go back and read the archive. She wants to be ours because we're the only one who can give her what she wants, and she's trying to make us stronger so she won't lose anything by siding with us.
>>
Tell her that being dangerous and regarded as dangerous aren't the same thing and that she should take it as a sign that people will not take you lightly. Everything in this world is dangerous if not respected and Sammy is no different. We are fine now and it's okay.
>>
>>44324917
In other words, she's manipulating us into being a powerful tool.
>>
>>44324749
>She looks genuinely shocked. You examine her expression as discretely as you can. It looks honest, but...
Proof that the QM hates Sammy and wants us to waifu Jennifer.
>>
>>44324943
Or that enough people are shadowrunning in the thread that it's being reflected in Oliver's reactions and perceptions.
>>
>>44324943
Or proof that Oliver is paranoid IC.
>>
>>44324954
Noone was suspecting Sammy of anything until you mentioned it in thread.
>>44324958
The lack of suspicion where Jennifer is concerned is against you there.
>>
You look at Sammy for a moment, then at the pie. You set it to one side bring your hands together.

“I told you already that I trust you. That's not... I don't do that. I don't do it easily, at any rate. I trust you, Sammy, and I believe you. But they didn't know I was listening in when they were talking about you, so it raises some questions. I've got a sure-fire way to blow all these accusations out of the water though.”

Sammy perks up a bit and smiles.

“What's that?”

You look at her for a moment, matching her smile.

“Well, I've learned my first real blood magic spells... Basic stuff, mostly. One of them is kind of a lie-detector spell. It'll let me ask you a few questions, and I'll know if you're lying or not. If you are... it also lets me hear the truth. I trust you, Sammy... Do you trust me?”

Sammy's ears droop once more and her smile fades. She takes a small step back.

“...if you have to go that far, then... then you don't trust me after all, do you...? Not really... I'll do it, if you really want me to, but... I can promise you, you won't need it.”

You close your eyes and take a breath. If she's being genuine, you just hurt her. If she's not, she's trying to make you feel bad so you won't cast the spell.

>I need my book for the spell, let's go to my room.
>Pretend to cast the spell, make something up, make her think you'll know when she's lying
>No, you're right. I don't need the spell. I'm sorry.
>Other (write-in)
>>
>>44324934
Not quite, because her secret wish is to be mentally dominated.

And how does that conflict with our goal, anyway? We want to become powerful enough to bring our parents back from the dead. We need LOTS more power than we have.
And remember, that IS a not-geas Oliver has, he's not going to give it up after 4 days at high school.
>>
>>44324964
>The lack of suspicion where Jennifer is concerned is against you there.
No reason to be suspicious. She definitely is manipulating us and we already know that.

>>
>>44325027
I haven't seen you encourage suspicion against Jennifer like you are now, since anons decided to waifu her.
>>
>>44325023
So? We've only known her 4 days. Break ups happen all the time in HS, it's not a big deal.

>I need my book for the spell, let's go to my room.
There's things I can't tell you until I'm /sure/ I can trust you.
>>
>>44325062
As has been stated many times by other people, you don't need to be suspicious of Jennifer. You know for a fact she's manipulative and has an agenda. Suspicion implies doubt or lack of evidence. If people decide to be willfully stupid around her, or ignore the fact that she's playing games, that's their problem. The suspicion about Sammy is because there's no clear proof, just hearsay. Also the fact that she's her mother's daughter.
>>
>>44325062
We already put Jennifer to the question, we KNOW what her motivation is. Sammy is still a question mark, one that managed to get attached to us FAST.
>>
Her curse is a problem. let's just bang wolf mom and get on with things. Sammy is a liability. Wolf mom and Nurse Death all the way
>>
>>44325125
>We already put Jennifer to the question
We actually wasted most of our questions on stupid shit and didn't prove anything definitive, unless I've forgotten something.
>>
>>44325105
My issue isn't that people are suspicious against her. Anons are fucking idiots, as has been proven time and again.

My issue is that you're dropping suspicion in a story without even pretending to put it to a vote. There was no mention of Sammy being suspicious before you in this thread, and even a half-assed accusation of 'You might be manipulating me and I won't trust you until you submit to this mind-rape lie detector magic' can ruin our relationship.
>>
>>44325128
Agreed. And maybe mer-girl, if she's not too gross. QM thinks she's best girl, which makes me curious to see what he's written.
>>
>>44325153
We could easily do it again. She likes being put under like that, it's one of the reasons she's so into us.
>>
>>44325128
The former is something to be used and discarded once it stops being useful, the latter will inevitably hate us for becoming a Necromancer unless you want to bring up that "let's abandon our primary motivation" shit again.
>>
>>44325160
Actually, there was in the last few threads. At least the last two before this one. Also, I'm rolling Smarts rolls over here for detecting reactions and working them into what I write, otherwise we'll be here all day with rolling dice. Something is off about Sammy. Something subtle.
>>
>>44325160
Anon. You're the only one who's dead set on waifuing and romancing Sammy. You're probably also the one who wants Oliver to abandon his main goal.
>>
>>44325178
The problem is there's no question that can be asked that will actually provide a definitive answer.

>>44325206
>You're the only one who's dead set on waifuing and romancing Sammy.
He's not.

>You're probably also the one who wants Oliver to abandon his main goal.
And now you've shot your own side in the foot with that fallacy.
>>
>>44325196
Wait, no, let me guess, her mom told her to submit to/seduce us specifically so we'd remain a loyal asset to the Wolfe clan.

Once again, Jennifer is the root cause of all drama and we should romance Angie instead.
>>
You rise to your feet slowly.

“I need my book for the spell. Let's go grab it. If you're being honest then I'm sorry... I just need to be sure.”

Sammy nods slightly.

“I understand... No matter what, I'm still yours. I just... I kinda thought that meant something, that you'd trust me completely...”

You head for the door and pause, looking over your shoulder at her. You know Sammy can be meek and shy at times, but she stood up to her mom the other day, and almost attacked her last night. Even if she's feeling bad, you're pretty sure she wouldn't just sit there and take it like this. Then you realize what's been bugging you. You focus your eyes, like you did with the book on illusion magic, and something clicks.

Sammy's eyes are red.

>Stay calm, act natural, carry on with the current plan

Not a fallacy, an assumption, since the last Tuesday that it was brought up, it was the same anon who was opposed to doing anything that would offend Sammy and abandoning Oliver's goal. My apologies if I was wrong, but it's not an unreasonable assumption. Just like we only have this issue on Tuesdays, which implies someone isn't keeping up with the quest.

>>44325187

You grab the doorknob in case everything goes wrong in a matter of seconds and turn to Sammy.

“Are you alright, by the by? You don't seem like yourself.”

Sammy blinks and tilts her head.

“What do you mean...?”

You shrug slightly.

“I dunno. You seem a little off. I would have expected you to be snappier with me. I mean, I just trampled the trust between us, the last time you felt hurt and betrayed, you...”

You pause for a moment.

“Tell me what happened last night.”

Sammy shifts from foot to foot.

“I... We had a fight, I hurt you, I ran off, some vampires attacked me, and I destroyed them...”

You nod and smile.

“With who? Who else was with you?”

Sammy's hands slowly ball into fists.

“...Well fuck you too.”

She grins, skin melting away to reveal one of the vampire girls. She makes a clutching gesture at you and your body locks up, your muscles going rigid. She cackles and flops onto Sammy's bed, reclining and pulling out Sammy's cell phone, calling someone up.

“Alright, I got him. Now what?”

There's a pause, and she frowns.

“What do you mean we're not...? But you told me that was the plan!”

Another pause.

“So what am I supposed to do now! She's knocked out in her closet for crying out loud! And he's paralyzed!”

Another pause and she throws the phone down, huffing and sitting up. She snaps her fingers, and feeling returns to your jaw.

“Well, this is a mess... We had it all worked out, and now apparently we're not going to kill, fight or enslave you. They couldn't have clued me in on this earlier, could they... So, let's start over.”

She walks over and bows, before offering her hand as your body unfreezes.

“I'm Lily, vampire of wrath. Friends?”

No it isn't it has an internal logic, it's not some fanwank shit.

You pause for a moment and take her hand.

“Sure, why not. Friends.”

She grins toothily at you before gesturing to the closet.

“She'll have a nasty headache, the pois- I mean, the drug I used on her to knock her out is pretty potent stuff. The antidote is in the bottle next to her. I'm out, I've gotta go get a bite to drink. Using that spell all afternoon really wore me out. See ya!”

She walks past you, opening the door and knocking you towards the closet before sauntering out. You head for the closet and open it up. Sammy is naked on the floor, wrists and ankles bound and with a gag in her mouth. Beside her is a small blue bottle, with a note attached. It reads:

“Sorry for things. If you're reading this, it probably means I told you where she is and screwed up somehow. So apologies. Aren't I thoughtful?”

You open the bottle up and remove the gag, gently pouring the contents into Sammy's mouth and helping her swallow. She coughs a bit, her eyes opening groggily.

“Oliver...? Is that... you...?”

She smiles weakly.

“I knew you'd... save...”

She goes a bit limp.

“My head... ow...”

You carefully scoop Sammy up, carrying her out of the closet and over to her bed. She leans on you, head against your chest, and you sit down on the edge of the bed with her, slowly removing her bonds and passing her a blanket to cover up with. She curls up in the blanket and smiles softly.

“Thanks...”

You nod and smile softly.

“No problem... What happened?”

Sammy blushes and frowns.

“Well... after lunch I ran into one of the vampires, and they said that if I wasn't careful something bad would happen. Then when the hallway was empty, she... she stuck me with a needle and told me I wasn't very careful at all... Then it all went black... I just... I knew that somehow, you'd come and save me...”

You give her a gentle squeeze. That also explains why she was laughing at Meliora. It wasn't actually Sammy after all.

“I'll stick around tonight so you don't have to worry about anything, alright?”

Sammy nods a little and moves from your lap to the bed, laying down.

“I'm fine like this... If you want to run back to your room to get anything, I can wait...”

>I'm gonna stay right here, like I said I would. I can sleep like this.

You gently pat her on the head.

“I'm gonna go get my pajamas then. I'll be back in just a little while, alright?”

Sammy nods and kisses your hand softly.

“I'll be waiting...”

You grab your bag and kiss her gently before heading for the door, giving her one last look before you walk out. As you turn away from the door you come face to face with Lily, who is dabbing at the corner of her mouth with a handkerchief. You can see a girl stumbling away down the hall, staggering with every other step. Lily chuckles a bit.

“Snack time is over. So, you wanna tell me more about this agreement we're supposed to be hammering out, or are you trying to be all mysterious, Mr. Supposed-Hunter-Blood-Mage.”

You head for your room with a shrug.

“It's still being worked out. I mean, ideally I'd like for us to be allies. I think that there's a lot going on right now that could be solved just by talking things out. I'm not here to eradicate the vampires or anything of the sort. I've got my own reasons for being here, and I'd like it if I wasn't being persecuted just for being a human who knows about you guys.”

Lily nods a bit.

“I think something can be worked out, yeah. Let's face it, everyone's gone totally mad here. That's M.A.D. by the way. One wrong move and everyone dies in the end. It's like a dance. I hate dancing.”

She laughs and slaps you on the back hard enough that you almost fall over.

“We'll have to test each other, obviously. See who can trust who. But it'll be a lot more fun than counting nights between bites.”

You look at her for a moment, and she winks.

“It's vampire talk. We drink from multiple sources and count the nights since we last fed from each person so they can recover in time for the next round. Different people are on different timers, due to health, age, that kind of thing. Killing humans is a waste, and turning too many is such a drag.”

You nod a bit and resume heading for your room.

“So that settles that then. We'll figure out some tests and go from there. Nonaggression pact, we help each other out from time to time, and my friends get some protection, and so do your families.”

Lily shrugs slightly.

“We'll see. We might only be able to get away with protection for you. I mean, it's only the six of us negotiating with you. Plus, one wrong move from a berserk werewolf and it all falls apart. I don't need someone going Sammy on my cousin and then having no choice but to exact revenge in a manner that violates our pact.”

She stops short and looks over her shoulder.

“Hmm. I've gotta run.”
>>
She runs past you, sprinting down the hall, and you look over your shoulder to see what she's running from. Kim dashes past you, screaming her head off.

“Get back here! You have three outstanding violations, criminal!”

You watch them disappear down the hall and hang your head. Welp. You head back to your room to find it empty. There's no trace of Jennifer ever having been here, and Meliora is out once again. You gather up your pajamas and pause for a moment.

You grab your hemomancy tome and pack it into your bag with your pajamas, heading off to Sammy's room. The trip isn't particularly exciting. In fact, it's fairly quiet. It's pretty late, and the halls are probably empty because everyone is in bed or at home or something. You walk into Sammy's room to find her fast asleep, and you quietly get changed. You grab your book and head over to the bed, when you feel a sudden draft.

“Go get her, champ!”

Presence yanks your pants down to your ankles and pushes you onto the bed, shoving you at Sammy, and you wind up on top of the startled girl as the blanket is yanked away by the ghost. You look down at Sammy, and she looks up at you, confused, embarrassed and slowly turning red.

You hesitate for a moment.

“...I... have a bit of a ghost problem. I probably should have mentioned that. I'm being haunted by a poltergeist.”

Sammy nods slightly as you carefully untangle yourself from her. Sammy grabs the blanket and pulls it over herself while you tug your pants back up, looking around for Presence. She's invisible again, but you can hear her soft laughter. Well... You did say minimum pranking...

“Um... so...”

You look over at Sammy, who is adjusting the blanket so you can get under with her.

“I mean... it wasn't that bad... for a prank, I mean...”

She glances at you, then away.

“I'm just saying is all.”

You slide in beside her, opening up your book and slipping an arm around her.

“It wasn't that bad for me either. Maybe another night, when you're feeling better, and no one is pushing me at you, we can do something.”

Sammy nods and hugs your side, closing her eyes. You skim through your book, unsure of what you're really looking for. You have some ideas, but...

Your research doesn't come up with anything useful, despite spending a good deal of time on the matter. The ritual for the new moon involves summoning a devil once again to carve a second channel, this one aimed to restore your blood and the magic contained within it more clearly, but you're having trouble getting the book to tell you more with Sammy's naked form pressed against you. Maybe studying like this was a bad plan.

You turn your attention to studying other forms of magic, trying to determine if there are blood magic spells that can help. There are a few, but they're hard to decipher or understand, and the descriptions are pretty vague. Your eyelids start to get heavy, and you find yourself yawning. Before you know it, you're fast asleep.

...

You awaken to the sound of your alarm, and note a few things. One, your pajama pants are missing. Two, Angie didn't visit you last night. Three, Sammy is huddled against you for warmth, and the blanket is folded up at the bottom of the bed.

You head off to your room to regroup and sort your head out. You should probably sit down and really consider who your allies are once you've got a chance to do so. Some people you know you can count on, like Angie, but others are a bit of a mystery, and a handful, like Mark, have been purposefully malicious before.

You shower and get changed, going over your schedule briefly. You could try to just cut class completely and work on magic all day long, but without a note from Angie first you'd get in trouble. Plus you should probably wait for Jennifer to be free before you ditch to maximize your training time. Or you could go about things normally the whole way through and just... be a student. You never once considered that it could be even more boring being in class, but now it's just just dry and boring, it's also a cover.

You finish preparing for the day and send a text to Jennifer asking when she plans to be in town. She'll be there right around the time school lets out, in case you decide to get to work right away, and she gives you the address for where she booked the room. You head off to breakfast and have a semi-awkward meal with Sammy. She's a little sad you left without letting her know, but she's also pleased you stayed the night with her.

Hunting class is awkward, not because of the class but because of Tobias. He's making a real effort to try to persuade you to come back; he seems desperate for a proper friend. You don't know much about Francine, or whatever her name was, but if she and Bradley are his only friends and Francine is as bad as Bradley, you really feel bad for the guy. You tell him you'll consider it and learn that the next meeting is next Wednesday, and that the book got confiscated by Angie after you left.

Your chemistry class is pretty exciting, since the lesson on atomic structure turns into discussing ways to make cupcakes. You're not really sure how it got to that point, but by the end everyone has a cupcake. Yours tastes vaguely of mint chocolate, the result of a series of complex chemical reactions and a mysterious machine shaped like a microwave which Fenwright called “The Cupcaker”. It's non-toxic, and it tastes pretty good, so you eat the whole thing. You briefly let him know about your calculus class, but you're pretty sure he was too busy with his pile of pumpkin cupcakes to hear you properly.

Your math class is pretty boring for the most part, until you realize midway through that the teacher is a spellcaster who could tell you what your specialties are. You sit there pondering how to go about asking while she drones on about formulas and variables.

That's gonna take some time, but maybe one day.

Hence why I named the pic end game. We're definitely headed that way.
>>
You head for your history class and find everyone dressed in costumes. Sammy is dressed as a knight, and you resist the urge to make a broadsword pun. Catherine, on the other hand, is dressed up like a nun. The moment you walk in, a hat is placed upon your head, and the teacher offers you a set of robes.

“We're going to start looking the part starting today. It's mostly taking notes, but I thought you might want to take some time to get used to the clothing for future roleplay sessions in class. Wear what you like.”

You head for your desk and slip on the robes. They're pretty comfortable, but you're going to get way too warm wearing these all class long. You smile at Catherine.

“I got the file last night. It all checks out. Are we ready to move forward with our idea?”

Catherine nods and adjusts her glasses.

“We are. I've begun making notes on the various houses... I've also asked the teacher if we can set up an event, and he said that we could put together a tournament in a week or two...”

You nod and get out your notebook, jotting down some notes as the professor begins his discussion on social hierarchies and terms of respect and endearment. Most of the lesson is about how people viewed one another, but he keeps it interesting by having students talk about how they think people saw each other, and how they might have actually thought of people of different classes.

“Alright, that's all for the lesson. Feel free to meet with your houses to discuss the lesson and go over the notes.”

You sit with Catherine in the corner and draft some plans for the tournament. She's already got a rough idea of how it could work, with mock jousting and combat with padded swords, and the real test being loyalty and valor over pure strength. You make a few changes here and there, partly for realism and partly so there are more chances for the houses to quarrel.

“If we make the rules for the combat a little vague, we can make rulings how we like and make the houses bicker.”

Catherine nods slightly.

“But if we do that, then they might resent us for the rulings... We need to have an impartial referee... Or pick one from a house that's not participating in the battles.”

She pauses and looks at the houses.

“Do you think we could... maybe convince each house to nominate a referee to keep the others from cheating...? And then... maybe create gaps in the schedule for cheap tricks...?”

>You're pretty devious when you put your mind to it. I like it.
>If we make it too obvious then it won't work, but it's the right track.

Works for me. It's just a class, after all.

And suspicion of us being dishonest will add to the conflict between houses.
>>
>>44328707
You shrug a bit.

“If we make it too obvious then it's not going to work. We need something that's concealed. If we pick the right referees then they'll create those gaps themselves through ineptitude. You said you were taking notes, right?”

Catherine nods a little.

“I've been making observations, yes... Mostly just casual ones... Little things I notice...”

She pulls out a small notebook and flips through the pages. There are notes on everyone in the class, except for you.

“I think I know who should be the referees if that's the angle we want to take...”

You nod and smirk.

“You're pretty devious. I never took you for the mischievous type.”

Catherine turns red, eyes wide.

“I-I would never...! I just... It's how the villains do things in my books... You have to find ways to get what you want while keeping your hands clean... It's... a little thrilling... It's like breaking a really big rule, except no one knows you're doing it...”

She fidgets a little, and you glance at the clock. Class is ending any minute now, and then it'll be time for lunch, which Sammy will no doubt want to spend with you.

>>44329019
You can't protect them all, not yet. Once we're a powerful vamp, we can bring all of these various smiles under our aegis. It'll take some doing, but if we become strong enough, no mortal threat will remain.

And if we become a vamp before we learn necromancy, Angie won't have any reason to reap us. She doesn't cover vamps, remember? Then we can just be friends and poker buddies.
>>
“Well, we can go over it next class, so it's no problem. I'll see you then, alright? And have a good weekend.”

Catherine perks up and glances at the clock right as the bell rings. She crams her stuff into her bag and runs off, looking a little worried, and you load up your own bag with your notebook and supplies. Sammy walks over and smiles softly.

“My headache finally cleared up... Let's get some lunch.”

You nod and smile, and head down with her to the cafeteria. There's no sign of vampires today, which is both encouraging and worrisome. You don't really know when the deal will be finalized. They might very well be discussing it right now. With any luck they'll be able to persuade their families to go along with it as well.

Your meal with Sammy passes at a fairly relaxed pace, and you enjoy the moment. Sammy isn't all over you, but she does do little things like feed you by hand from time to time. It's only when Andrea strides over and sits down beside you that she stops, smiling a bit at her friend.

“Hi there. How's it going?”

Andrea grumbles.

“It's alright for the most part. Are we still on for tomorrow? A movie came out that I want to see, and I know this great cafe not too far from it.”

Sammy grins.

“Sure thing. That sounds great. Is it the same one we went to last time?”

Andrea nods.

“You gotcha. I figure I may as well introduce Oliver to some great places around town since he only just moved here.”

Andrea turns to you.

Every sin is the same severity. So as long as we tell God umm hey I know I goofed, mea culpa. It'll be fine. Granted this may only make it so we don't get sent strght to hell if we're unlucky but can't win em all. Sides Angie can still talk to and hang out with undead, just not cover for em.
>>
You nod and give her a thumbs up.

“I'm in. Sounds like a blast.”

Andrea nods and smiles, rising to her feet.

“Well, if you'll excuse me, I've got somewhere to be. I just wanted to check up on you guys.”

She runs off, and Sammy smiles softly.

“She always vanishes around lunchtime. I never really get to see her during the day. It's like she's always off in her own little world.”

You nod a bit, trying to work out where she's heading. Probably the forest. The rest of your lunch period is pretty much more of the same, and you part ways with Sammy to head to gymnastics. Another class spent memorizing patterns of moves while your classmates learn the moves themselves. You've got a few basic combinations down pat by the end of class, but this time Coach Paris doesn't say a word to you.

Literature and Latin both turn out to be incredibly boring today, and you almost fall asleep in Latin class. It's all self-study and reading, and you skim through the texts for both without much to show for it. You scribble down a few story ideas in Lit and spend Latin going over obscure words from the hemomancy tome, and then head to shop, where you spend almost an hour wearing your arms out working on the wooden sculpture of a helmet.

With your arms worn out and your body a little sore from all your exercise, you take some time to stretch and limber up on the way back to your room. You pack your bag for your study session, including your book and a spare set of clothes in case you set yourself on fire, and consider how to spend the evening.

She said she doesn't worry about them because hunters normally deal with rogue vampires and few vampires are selfless enough to actually go through the trouble of resurrecting someone.

You text Jennifer to let her know you're on your way, sling your bag over your shoulder, and head out. You plug the address into your phone as you head to the bus stop, and track it down to a shady part of town. It seems like contested territory to you, since it's not neat and clean. When you arrive in the neighborhood you nod to yourself. This isn't a safe place. This is the front line of the conflict between various types of monster. You hurry to the motel and slip inside.

When you knock on the door to Jennifer's room it swings open slowly, unlocked and slightly ajar. You can hear the shower running as you walk inside, and there's a large suitcase in the main room. You close and lock the door and take a moment to settle in and unpack your bag.

“Jennifer? You've got company.”

The bathroom door opens slightly.

“I'll be out in a moment. I thought I had time for a quick shower but I guess the buses come more frequently now.”

We'll see. Binding but not compelling seems like the sort of loophole she'd appreciate. Tell her to work in our best interest as she sees fit, and enjoy herself while at it? We might end up with some nephilim, but eh, she can say she was bound, after she's free.

Besides, Solomon got along with his 72 demons, after all. Binding's not always bad.

Possible, but seeing them alive and well is what he wants. I wouldn't put it past him to wipe their memories of getting raised and setting them up somewhere where they can be happy and he watches over them from a distance.
>>
>>44329623
but what's the point of having a family if you can't be a part of it, right? Oliver is a boy who is DISTINCTLY lacking in his having a childhood. He was constantly moving, his dad was either away or passed out home, drunk, all there money went towards apartments, the truck, and weaponry, and his mom was nowhere to be seen.
To me, that sounds like someone who wants his goddamn do-over, regardless of the consequences.
When life has fucked you THAT hard? Yeah, you might feel like the universe owes you some back-pay.
Totally just my own point of view, though.
>>
You pause for a moment, then shrug and open the bathroom door, walking in. Jennifer is behind a frosted glass door while she showers, and you make yourself comfortable on the counter while you wait.

“So, what happened with Patrick when you got back? Everything alright?”

You can barely see her silhouette through the glass, but it's clear she turned to look at you as you spoke.

“For the most part. He knows you could claim me at any time, my true feelings about him... We made an effort to keep the pack together, but he couldn't keep a straight face at all. At this rate the Wolfe clan is doomed. Stephen plans to take control by pushing Patrick to his limit and prompting a proper fight so that there won't be a question later.

I'm worried about something though. Patrick is on the verge of just giving me up completely. If he does, he loses his position of power, and I'm all alone. I'm not part of that pack without him. What's worse is that if you don't claim me before that happens, I might get snatched up by a Collins wolf or something and carried off. I'm not saying you need to solve all my problems for me, but it would be nice. I have hope right now, I'd rather my position not go from bad to worse because of this.”

You nod and take in the news for a moment. Stephen being in charge, with the evidence against Mark, would be a pretty advantageous position for the Wolfe clan if Stephen turns out to be strong. Or if they have a particularly powerful ally to call upon.

>If it comes to that, I'll claim you.

“So what do you propose we do then? What's the plan? Because as far as I can tell, claiming you would just ruin Patrick's position of authority before Stephen can fight him. It's pretty much a last resort.”

Jennifer turns the water off and opens the door slightly, grabbing a towel.

“My plan at this point is to let Stephen do what he plans to do. If Patrick relinquishes me before the fight, I intend to keep away from home as much as possible so that I can let you know, so that you can say you claimed me before that and spread it around as you see fit. Patrick needs to be beaten by another werewolf within the clan, and it needs to happen before he loses his title by giving up his mate. If it happens afterward... I'll still be in the same position, but Stephen could try to shelter me for a little while so I have time to figure something out. It delays the inevitable.”

You sigh softly.

“So what happens with Sammy then? I've got a claim on her, what happens to her if I take you?”

Jennifer walks out of the shower with the towel around herself.

“That's why I said it would be nice if you solved my problems. It's not ideal. Sammy goes back to being single, with no one claiming her. We could find a way to fix her curse, help her be normal in werewolf society. Someone would take a liking to her, she certainly has the brains and the looks for it. I'm not telling you that you must. I'm asking you, if it comes to it.”

She walks over to you slowly.

“You have a good heart, Oliver. But don't feel as though you don't have a choice. I'll endure whatever I must to survive. Now... I'm going to get dressed, and we'll begin your lesson. I bought a kit that will help us determine your magical proficiencies, as well as some tools to help you learn to use your magic.”

If that's the case every present Jennifer got us is a bomb, Meliora is planning to assassinate us, and Catherine dosed us in contact poison.

You don't get that people have certain motivations. Sammy being she just got almost everything she ever wanted, sans a runt cure, wants to keep it. That's it. She's this close to her win con, and wants her life to stay that way. Not that hard to figure out. She's not a politician like Jennifer, malign like the vamps, or good at poker faces like Meliora.

You sit down in front of the pile and open the presents from smallest to largest. The first one is a notebook, bound in leather with the words “Oliver's Magic Notes” embossed on the front. Jennifer chuckles a little bit.

“I couldn't help myself. The cover can obscure itself, and disguise itself as a different book. It's for your own spells, whatever you develop on your own.”

You set it aside and move on to the next one. It resembles the science kits you buy for kids, with plastic test tubes and eyedroppers, except this is “My First Spellcasting Kit!”, with special colored powders for determining magical proficiencies and a little booklet with a basic spell for a few different schools. You set it beside the book and turn to the last present, the big one.

The last present takes a little while to unwrap properly because of all the little parts. The big present, it turns out, is a series of smaller presents bundled together. Five round, flat stones, a paper fan, a lighter, a flask, a packet of seeds, a small bag with various types of crystal, and a notebook on devils and their identifying characteristics. A little something for most of the types of magic, aside from the ones you basically build yourself like natural magic or rune magic.

>Thank Jennifer right away

You smirk a little bit and turn to her.

“You really went all out for this, huh.”

Jennifer shrugs slightly and pulls a ruler out of her luggage, along with a pair of glasses, slipping them on and smiling.

“Now I'm going all out. But wrapping those was easy enough. I had plenty of time on my hands. I actually got here fairly early, but I figured that I'd let you attend class and not worry about me, and surprise you with these when you got here.”

You open up the pack with the affinity tester and examine the contents. The white powder block changes color based on affinity, and then you extract each color one at a time from the block by breaking it down and using various tools and processes. Then you just weigh the powder piles and you've got an approximation.

“Well, let's get to work then. I wanna know what my specialties are.”

Jennifer walks over, kneeling beside you.

“Keep in mind that this is a toy for children. It's not especially accurate, but it'll give us a rough idea.”

You set aside the tools for extracting various colors of powder and grab the block and a plate to catch the powder, following the instructions. You imagine your magical power and try to push it into the block, watching as color spreads across it, staining it with a rainbow of different shades and hues. The block crumbles into pieces, and you set it on the plate, starting the extraction.

It takes a few minutes, but you end up with a few large piles and a couple of smaller ones. Jennifer reads through the identification manual, pointing to the piles one by one as she lists what they indicate, going from largest to smallest. The sexy teacher look suits her a little bit, not that you plan to tell her that at the moment.

“The black one indicates an affinity for rune magic. You enjoy control over things, particularly absolute control, and rune magic provides that for you. It's dangerous and requires a lot of planning, but rune mages are the most powerful casters in existence.
>>
The red one is blood magic. I don't think I need to tell you why this pile ended up so big. It's not so much a natural affinity so much as one you conjured for yourself. Even so, you've got a knack for it. The pile is too large for the results of a basic ritual.

The purple one is elemental magic. Simple, straightforward and direct. It doesn't list a specific element, but from the shade... Likely fire and air. We'll concentrate on those for the time being. Fire in particular, since it can be a useful weapon, though air will help you with your various stunts.

The yellow one is illusion magic. Seems like your affinities lie mainly in the difficult schools. I don't know enough about it to teach it as well as I'd like, but I think there's a book that got put on the market last night. I'll look into it.

Natural magic is next, the blue pile, which is a kind of magic relating to the body, innate spells and abilities. If you were a werewolf then your healing would be faster, for instance, and as a vampire your ability to control others might be stronger than normal.”

The other piles are about the same size, and Jennifer closes the book at that point and sets it aside.

“Seems you're destined for great things then, assuming this thing isn't rigged or faulty. Shall we get right into some exercises, or did you want to make a note of this for reference?”

She gestures to the book and offers you a pen. You're not sure where she was keeping it, since you most definitely weren't looking at her cleavage at all ever.

You shake your head.

“I can remember it for the most part. For now though, let's make use of our time. What have you got for me in terms of training?”

Jennifer grabs the lighter, ignites it, and sets it on the floor between you.

“Today we'll be working on manipulating your magic to fuel a flame and extinguish it. Fire is easy, since we can clearly observe the changes in the flame, and if it gets excessively large or small compared to how it is now, you'll know whether what you're doing is working or not.”

She grabs your wrists and moves your hands so they're almost cupping the lighter, just far enough that you won't burn yourself.

“Now, do what you did with the block. Focus on your power. Imagine it pooling between your hands. Feed the flame.”

You focus to the best of your ability on the flame, and on your own power. You've felt it before, when you used your will to direct objects around your room, but perhaps that was just the spell reacting to your thoughts and not your magic. You dig down deeper and concentrate. With each breath in you imagine that you're drawing something into yourself, and then pushing it out through your hands. As you open your eyes you see the flame grow, ever so slightly, in time with your breath.

“Nicely done. Can you push a little further with it? Don't try to push too hard, just try to get the hang of turning it on and off, make the flow of power clearer in your mind.”

You take deeper breaths, concentrating the energy before you release it, and the flame grows larger for a briefer period. You try to do it on an exhale to switch things up, and after a few tries you have the same thing down. With some tips from Jennifer you start to focus on the mental image more than your breathing, making the flame larger as you will it. It's tiring, probably because you're wasting far too much energy since you don't know what you're doing, but you're doing it. You smile at the flame.

“This is pretty cool.”

Jennifer nods a bit.

“Now try to snuff it out. Use your power, and instead of feeding the fire, smother it. Don't let your energy burn, let it blanket the flame and make it smaller.”

You focus on the flame and try to make it smaller, but you're still locked in the same mindset as before, and the flame grows instead. You try a different approach, but each time your energy still burns the same. You sigh a bit, feeling a little burnt out, and sit back for a moment, looking at the lighter. Jennifer nods a bit.

“Maybe you need a break. We've been at this for a little while. You might not realize it, but you've been working on this for about twenty minutes now.”

You quirk an eyebrow and move to check your phone, and Jennifer chuckles.

“It was a joke. But seriously, lots of small exercises rather than one big one. Let's have a quick break for a snack and a drink, and try again in a minute.”

“One last time. I'm gonna give it one last shot before I give up.”

Jennifer nods and moves behind you, resting her hands over yours.

“Don't concentrate on how you were doing it before. Smothering the flame is different. Don't picture the same sort of energy. Use your intent to color the power you use.”

You nod, focusing on the flame. You pull and push with your power, and eventually you manage to get it increasing and diminishing as you alternate between “colors” of power. You make it as big as you can, and then almost manage to extinguish it completely, and Jennifer moves away from you with a smile.

“Excellent progress. We'll be working on that exercise for the rest of the evening until you have it perfected. If there's time, we'll see if you can support a flame with just your own power. Honestly though, this is where I expected to be later on in the evening. I guess the powder wasn't totally wrong after all.”

“So where do you wanna go for a bite to eat? Snack time, right?”

Jennifer sighs softly.

“Unfortunately this is a rough part of town, so I'll need to get changed first, but we can go wherever you like. There's a bar, a pub, a restaurant that serves some decent Chinese food...”

She grabs her suitcase and heads for the bathroom.

“I'll be just a moment, I didn't think you'd want to venture outside.”

She closes the door and you take a moment to regard the lighter. You close it to snuff the flame, and then open it again and light it once more. You just did magic, proper magic without a spellbook telling you how to do it. You make a flame grow and shrink with your own power. You pocket the lighter with a smile. So cool.

Jennifer emerges from the bathroom in a plaid skirt, camouflage jacket and a black tank-top. She walks over to the bed with a pair of knee-length boots, tugging them on carefully and regarding you for a few moments.

“In this part of town there are monsters all over the place. Stay close to me. You're a human and you smell like it.”

She finishes lacing up her boots and walks over to you, offering her hand.

“And let me do the talking so you don't end up in any trouble.”

You shake your head and smile.

“I can handle myself and you know it. I'm going to be fine. It's all about attitude. If you act like you're scared, they'll believe it. I'll just be quietly confident.”

Jennifer nods and sighs softly, hugging your arm.
