Become The Vampire 24

It's Sunday, your first at Red Fields, and you've just had a nice breakfast with Jennifer. As expected, most of the students have gone home for the weekend, and the few that remain barely paid you any mind at all. It's a school for monsters and wealthy humans, so everyone with money has gone home to enjoy it and most of the monsters have returns to their covens, clans and packs. It makes you wonder how people like Andrea ended up here, but then again, you're a bit of an exception yourself.

You have the whole day ahead of you to do... pretty much whatever you like. You've got a couple of assignments you could work on, like the helmet for shop class, and you could work on your magic some more. Presence is still locked in her canister, Meliora is still KO'd and Sammy and Andrea, as far as you know, are still at Sammy's place. You've returned to your room after breakfast to figure out what you want to do with your time.

>Character sheet
http://pastebin.com/YMGdCy7Q
>Rules
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

You walk over to Meliora and give her a once-over. There's no visible access port or way to connect to her, and when you poke her forehead she doesn't react. Jennifer sits on the couch and watches you, chuckling softly and loading up a game while she waits. You scratch your head for a moment before your phone buzzes in your pocket. You take it out, and you can see a little chibi-style rendition of Meliora on your screen. God damn weeaboo roboticist and his japanophile daughteru. The character jumps up and down, pointing at Meliora, text appearing on the screen.

Miniora: Sir, do I have your permission to remotely uplink to Meliora to try and wake her up?
Miniora: Her wireless connection is still open. I can attempt to break her code out of the loop it's caught in.
Miniora: She might be a little agitated when she wakes up though. But less so than if you were to leave her like this for another hour or two when her internal clock will prompt a soft reset of certain programs, breaking the loop.

You press the button to give your assent, and the screen goes dark for a few moments. Meliora's eyes glow pink for a few moments, and your phone returns to normal as she starts to twitch, waking slowly.

“My head...”

She groans and sits up, rubbing her eyes and shaking her head a bit.

“I had an awful nightmare...”

She looks at you and frowns, cheeks tinted pink.

“Someone did the most embarrassing thing in the world like it was nothing... And I had to sit there and watch it happen... It felt like it was etched into my mind for hours...”

She looks over at Jennifer and pauses, looking back at you.

“What exactly... happened last night?”

You pause for a moment to take in the moment before it's inevitably ruined.

“It wasn't a nightmare. It actually happened. Though to be fair, you did ask for it. Did you think Jennifer would shy away from it?”

Meliora points an accusatory finger at you.

“You were the one who sat there and took it! You're as much at fault! You're both as bad as each other! I've never seen such a perverse display before! That trumps the time that I saw those two people holding hands! Holding! Hands! I can't believe that I share the same room as you!”

Jennifer laughs quietly, and Meliora glares at her.

“What's so funny?”

Jennifer pauses her game and turns towards you both.

“You didn't specify if it was supposed to be with tongue or not. Should I redo it?”

Meliora turns scarlet and stammers for a moment before chucking her pillow at Jennifer and running into the bathroom, locking the door behind herself.

You head for the bathroom and lean against the door. You know it's locked, but you try the handle anyway, just so that Meliora knows you're there.

“Meliora? Jennifer was just teasing, she didn't mean anything by it. I'm sure she didn't mean to upset you. How about you come out and play some games with us or something?”

There's movement on the other side, and the door opens briefly. Meliora throws a towel in your face before slamming the door once more, and you sigh softly.

“You're being unreasonable. I mean, have you seen the other kids around here? Kids kiss all the time.”

The door opens again. Another towel to the face before you can react.

“No, they don't! I've never seen it happen before! And the thought that I go to a school where people secretly kiss all the time is... I don't know what it is, but I don't like it!”

You grab the towels and start to fold them up.

“You ran that program the other day, right? That's just how some teenagers are. Was it embarrassing when you were running those simulations?”

There's a brief silence and Meliora opens the door, grabs the towels from your hands, and chucks them into your face once more. This is pointless. You leave the towels where they are and sit on the couch. At least you didn't make things worse, but still...

You lean back a bit.

“I think I need to go pick up some peace offerings from the store. Meliora is upset and won't calm down for a while, and I think I ticked Angie off. Wanna come with me?”

Jennifer pauses the game and gets to her feet.

“Sounds like fun to me. Though I don't think a dress like this is going to do much good in this weather if we're outside for a long time. I'm going to change into something a little bit warmer first, and you should do the same. I promise not to peek if you don't.”

She grabs her suitcase and starts to rummage through it for a different outfit, and you adjust your own clothing a bit and head for your closet for a jacket. You don't really need a change of clothes considering what you have on is warm enough. You look at the canister on your bedside table for a moment and pause.

You grab the canister and give the lid a firm twist. When that doesn't work you fiddle with the clasp. There's a soft humming noise and a hiss, and the lid pops off, flying a few feet away as ectoplasm erupts from the container. It slowly starts to twist and meld together, forming into Presense's physical body.

“Fear me, mortal, for you have released a great and powerful- Oh, hey there buddy!”

She looks behind you and whistles.

“Oh man, looking good!”

Presence grabs your cheeks and grins.

“You totally scored, didn't you. I had faith in you! All you needed was a little push and some repeated de-pantsings.”

She pats you on the head, leaving a blob of ectoplasm to slowly melt atop your head, leading your face covered in slime. You shudder, and she floats past you.

“So you must be my prey's... What, one-night-stand? Beloved? Work with me here, I'm a poltergeist, not a psychic.”

“I'm his friend at the moment. That's all he'll allow.”

You wipe your face off as you turn around, right as Jennifer finishes tugging on a sweater, adjusting her skinny jeans. Presence is hovering around her and whistling, waggling her eyebrows at you.

“Come on, you've gotta tap this. You could bounce a quarter off her ass! I mean, you can bounce a quarter off a lot of asses, I know from experience, but still. My point is that you should get laid. For me. Who knows, maybe my unfinished business involved spontaneously growing a penis and fucking someone with it?”

Presence hovers closer, studying your face.

“Hmm... Not uncomfortable enough yet... What am I missing...”

You gesture to Presence and look over at Jennifer.

“Jennifer? Meet Presence. Presence? Meet Jennifer. Presence is my poltergeist. I've become the target of a haunting for putting my stuff into a haunter locker. Jennifer is my close friend, and I trust her.”

Presence looks back and forth between you both for a few moments before drifting over to Jennifer.

“Ollie-outie here is helping me figure out my unfinished business. It's why the room isn't a ruin yet. Mostly I just bug the crap out of him in the hopes that eventually it'll spark whatever my unfinished business is.”

Jennifer bows.

“Charmed. I take it you're also trying to get him hooked up then? Or is that just to make him uncomfortable?”

Presence laughs and leans in close, whispering something to Jennifer. Jennifer nods slightly.

“I see. Well, I'm not going to stop you.”

Presence nods and dives into your bag with s soft, wet thud. Your bag is now soaking with ectoplasm, but fortunately it seems to be drying rapidly.

You grab your phone and slip your bag over your shoulder.

“It feels like it'd be rude to just leave Presence here alone. With all my belongings. I'm gonna see if Meliora wants to come with us.”

Jennifer nods, getting out a purse and putting a few things inside. You open the messenger and pause for a moment, moving to the door and typing.

“We're going shopping. I know that you're upset, but if you don't come with us then Jennifer is going to be all over me while we're out. I need your help, alright?”

Moments later the door swings open and Meliora starts grabbing her school uniform, pulling it on piece by piece. Your phone buzzes and you check what Meliora sent you.

“It's my sword duty as your roommate to protect you from monsters. Especially flirty monsters with big boobs.”

You can't help but feel there's a touch of jealousy with that last part, but getting into it now would cause issues. You clear out your bag and take a moment to take stock of things, going over what you'll need in your head. You don't think you've ever actually been around as many people who can stand you at the same time before, if you count Presence. It warms your heart a little bit.

You turn and head for the bus, with Jennifer and Meliora following at your sides. Jennifer moves to take hold of your arm, and Meliora promptly inserts herself between you both. Jennifer takes her arm instead and smiles at you.

“Lovely day for a walk, isn't it?”

Meliora huffs.

“I know your game. There will be no flirting on this shopping trip. I'm not going to let you put your lecherous hands on Oliver.”

There's a brief pause.

“Work with me here, my usual approach isn't working. Are you seriously not weirded out by all this?”

You look at Jennifer and Meliora glaring at each other and rub your forehead.

“Fine. Fight if you have to, but settle it properly. I don't want you two arguing all day, just... figure out a way to settle this argument, alright?”

Jennifer nods a bit.

Meliora, I know you might not like some of the stuff Jennifer wants to do, but it's between the two of us. Jennifer? Meliora is my roommate, and I want to be able to get along with her.”

Meliora grumbles and kicks at the ground a bit.

“Fine.”

Jennifer nods, moving to your other side.

“I'll try to keep things to a minimum to avoid upsetting anyone.”

Presence grumbles a bit.

“Come on, get them fighting again! I wanna see them battle it out. Hair pulling! Nudity! ...You're really not reacting to this at all, huh. Alright, new plan... Hmm... Oh, I know!”

You're a little worried that Presence is going to start pulling some pranks. She was in a canister when you got to your room, which means Meliora bottled her up. So if not you, and if not Meliora... You look at Jennifer, and Presence is right behind her, rubbing her hands together.

“Presence, remember our deal. Pranks in private? Fine. Stuff that isn't a huge problem or public incident? Sure. But if you're coming with us, you can't do anything that's going to get anyone in trouble. So whatever you're thinking of doing, rethink it. I'm going to help you but you need to control yourself.”

Presence looks at you with an expression of genuine pain, slinking back into your bag with a sound like something bubbling on a stove. Jennifer smiles a bit.

“Thank you for that. I could tell she was up to something, but I wasn't sure what.”

You shrug and smile.

“We have a deal. If she breaks the deal, it's on her. I'm just reminding her what it is.”

Meliora tilts her head slightly.

“Who, the ghost?”

She pulls a small metal vial from her pocket and pushes it into your hand.

“In case you need it.”

The vial has a small green button on it, and when you press it, it expands to form a container like the one Presence was sealed in before. You push the button again and it folds back up.

“Thanks, I think.”

The rest of the walk to the bus is relatively quiet, and you try to work out where to head first.

You decide to go for the beans first. You want to find time to ditch Jennifer and Meliora before you buy gifts for either of them, and you don't mention the possibility of presents out loud. Securing the chocolate covered coffee beans seems to be the easiest thing on your list though, as the instant you finish making your purchase you turn around to find Meliora and Jennifer looking at each other as though standing off.

“Something wrong?”

Jennifer shakes her head.

“We're just trying to decide something. I want to give you a hug.”

Meliora nods.

“And I don't think that she should, since she'll probably do other things too.”

You turn and walk off, sighing quietly and trying to figure out what exactly to buy. Meliora likes games and anime stuff, and Jennifer seems to like reading and used to be religious. You run through a few options for each in your head to try to make sense of it.

For Meliora:
>A model kit from a game she owns
>A new game she might like
>Anime swag that reminds you of her
>More of the cards you got last time, because originality is lame

You manage to track down some pretty decent gifts, if you do say so yourself. After some hunting around town you manage to find a retailer who deals in gaming merchandise, and you buy a model kit from Meliora's MMO game, the one of the final boss “from the expansion that they had to cancel last year”. As for Jennifer, you buy her two books, one on teaching and another that follows the life story of a famous physicist unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos.

With your gifts packed away in your bag you contemplate how to get back to them without giving away what you purchased, in case they decide to ask. Presence pokes your shoulder, and you turn around to find a very bored poltergeist glaring at you. She jabs you in the chest with her finger.

“This. Is. Dull. We're in public so I can't prank you like I want to. Why did you even bring me along? Huh?”

>>
“I thought you'd be bored sitting around in my room while we were out. I was trying to be considerate.”

You smile a little and walk along the road, Presence at your side.

“Besides, I didn't want you to be lonely.”

Presence pokes your ear, hovering right beside your head.

“I'm usually in an empty locker room. I don't get lonely. It's just... keeping everything bottled up is so aggravating. I wanna run around loosening the screws on fire extinguishers, or flipping skirts, or... or anything!”

You nod slightly and pause.

“So what do you like to do besides pranks then?”

Presence tumbles through the air slowly, an over-dramatic acrobat without a tumbling mat.

“Painting, drawing, that kind of thing. I happen to be an award-winning artist! That's how I got my scholarship here covered.”

You nod and smile.

“In that case, I have just the thing for you. Let's get you some art supplies.”

Presence looks at you for a few moments, then shrugs.

“Sure, why not.”

You head for a craft store and pick out a few things, and the moment you get outside Presence pulls them into your bag, closing the zipper. You can hear paper being shredded and wrappers being ripped apart, and then the soft, continuous sound of scribbling. You nod to yourself and smile. That works. You swing by a general store and grab a few odds and ends for your room, and put them into a different pocket of your bag.

You text Jennifer and Meliora and let them know that you're done, and agree to meet up with them near the bus stop to regroup and figure out what to do next. You spot Sophie well before she spots you, in the company of her brother Mark. They appear to be out shopping together, with Mark carrying a bag of groceries in one hand and balloon in the other. Sophie points at a toy store excitedly and tries to pull him towards it before noting you and pointing you out to Mark.

You stop short and lock eyes with Mark. He doesn't seem to regard you with any sort of anger, just mild curiosity. Your verbal sparring and competition during creative writing seems to have mellowed him a bit. Either that or he has some amount of respect for you since you put effort into what you wrote in class. By the time you realize he's not about to flip out and attack you, Sophie is already beginning to run over to you.

“Oliver! Fancy seeing you here?”

“Hey there. How are you doing?”

Sophie gestures to Mark as she walks up.

“Decently. Big Bro is helping me pick out a few things.”

She waves at Mark, who starts to slowly trudge over. Sophie turns back towards you and grins.

“You promised you'd teach me how to tuck and roll after a fall the next time we saw each other, right? Well that day is today.”

She moves her hands behind her back and kicks at the ground.

“Right? Or did you lie last time...?”

She pouts adorably at you and Mark ruffles her hair.

“Sophie, no. Bad. He's out shopping, he's probably really busy right now.”

He looks at you for a moment and chuckles.

“Right? No time for messing around with puppies.”

It's like he wants you to disappoint Sophie or something. Then again, he's an older brother. Maybe it's a sibling thing. Sophie bites Mark's hand and he tries to shake her off, but she just bites down harder until he growls at her.

You take out your phone and let Meliora and Jennifer know you'll catch up with them in a few minutes before pocketing your phone and limbering up.

“I can teach you the basics, sure. I don't have a ton of time, so I'll demonstrate a few things and go over how you do them.”

Mark rolls his eyes.

“This should be good.”

Sophie smiles cheerfully, and you set down your bag, glancing around. You spot a decent spot to climb up, and you run at the wall, springing off it and grabbing a sign before hoisting yourself up and onto a platform. You take a run, leaping from the platform to another one with a flip, before tumbling along it and leaping at the end. You land on the ground with a roll, cushioning your fall and bouncing back to your feet. Mark whistles, while Sophie stares in awe.

“So. Cool.”

She immediately attempts to imitate you, slips on he first jump, and almost lands on her face. You walk over as she dusts herself off.

“I'm alright. No worries.”

She sniffles a bit, and you notice that her hands are a bit scuffed up. And you without a medical kit, once again. You pat her on the head.

“Focus on smaller stuff first. Always make sure you're in total control of your jumps and movements, and practice on something soft. I used to tumble on my bed or flip onto pillows.”

Sophie nods slightly and smiles, hugging your waist.

“Alright then. I'll try that next time.”

She waves at you as she runs back over to Mark, who smirks at you.

“You're pretty light on your feet. Must make you hard to hit. Float like a butterfly and all that. Perhaps we can spar sometime, if you're up for it. I'd like to see where our strengths are compared to one another.”

He walks off, Sophie running after him, and you check your phone as you resume heading for the bus. Well, that happened. You look up and spot Meliora and Jennifer waiting for you at the stop, both engaged in a heated discussion about something. They don't seem to have noticed you.

You use the crowd for cover as you slip closer to the pair, and you move behind a bush by the bus stop as you listen in on their conversation. You catch little snippets of it, mostly about you. Jennifer is trying to work out how Meliora feels about you, and Meliora is going on about the simulation and how she refuses to run it again. Jennifer counters with questions about the program evolving naturally to include those functions, and Meliora falls silent.

You decide to keep your head down for the time being and just listen. Meliora remarks that if it happens on its own then that's part of her becoming more human, which she'll make peace with. Jennifer follows up by asking if she's alright with developing feelings for you if her programming evolves that way, and Meliora says that she's not sure at this point.

She asks Jennifer what being in love is like and if it makes people do stupid things, and Jennifer says that stupid things are par for the course, and that it's worth it. Meliora asks Jennifer how she feels about you, and Jennifer replies that she likes you a lot but doesn't plan to make it truly serious until you show her you feel similarly and that it'll last. Meliora tells her that if she falls for you then Jennifer will be her rival, and Jennifer tells Meliora to bring it on because she already has a different rival to contend with.

>>
You kneel down and open your bag carefully, removing the presents slowly. Presence pays you almost no mind at all, working on a charcoal drawing of some sort. You decide to leave her be for now, focusing instead on delivering these gifts in a suitably “you” fashion. You start with the model, slipping it under Meliora's bed when she's not looking, right on top of a pile of game discs. You put the books into Jennifer's suitcase and smile.

“So I got you both presents.”

They both turn to look at you, and you hold out your empty hands before gasping.

“Where could they have gone to?”

You look around a bit and Jennifer laughs quietly.

“You're being sly again, aren't you.”

You gasp and cover your mouth.

“Me? Sly?”

Meliora's eyes glow and she furrows her brow, leaning over the edge of her bed and grabbing the box. She looks at it for a few moments in silence, sitting up with it on her lap. There's a flash of pink light and you find yourself on the floor, with Meliora clinging to your chest, hugging tightly. She releases you slowly, shaking slightly and blushing.

“I... uh... that was... I mean... Thanks...?”

She eases back slowly and dives for her bed, hiding under her blankets with the model. Jennifer looks at her suitcase, then at you.

“It's in here, right? There's not really anywhere else to put it.”

You get to your feet as Jennifer pulls out the books, smiling as she looks at the covers.

“Perfection. You really do know me after all.”

She stands and walks over, kissing you softly and hugging tight.

You walk over to Meliora's bed and poke the blanket gently.

“Everything alright under there?”

There's some brief movement before Meliora responds.

“Yes, I just prefer working on models in darkness and silence. And since I'm lacking in one...”

She stands up, blanket and all, and proceeds towards the door, letting herself out calmly before sprinting down the hall. Um... You watch her go for a moment before Jennifer snickers.

You nod a bit and sigh.

“Well, I'll let her do her own thing...”

You peek into your bag. Presence is working on a new drawing. She seems perfectly content to sit there and do her thing for a while, so you turn to Jennifer.

“Mind helping me do some studying on hemomancy? I wanna prep properly for the next ritual since I'm in an agreement that might only be binding so long as I can get everything done on time.”

Jennifer nods and sits down on the couch, and you hand her the tome to read through. With Jennifer translating passages for you, you manage to track down the appropriate section without much effort. The next ritual just requires you to open your veins while chanting. No need for a candle this time, and the book will guide you into making the appropriate symbols and patterns under you for summoning the devil of your choice, assuming that you've made contact with them before.

Jennifer also goes over a couple of spells with you, as well as the types of sacrifice that she's learned about. The first tier of spells involve sacrificing ideas and personal things. Calories, for instance, or someone's ability to do something if they offer it to you. The second tier, which you're about to reach, deals with sacrificing materials for effects relating to them. The third tier begins to delve into sacrificing things that don't belong to you, and the ultimate art of blood magic is sacrifice of that which you possess but which you hold no claim to, such as the life of another person.

You find yourself shivering a little when she mentions sacrificing other people, and Jennifer pulls you into a tight embrace. She sets the book aside and offers you soft reassurances, and you lean on her a little bit, sighing. The dream is still weighing heavily on you, and for some reason you can't shake the feeling that there's more to it than just a dream.

It's probably all going to be equally dark. Since rune magic's supposedly limitless, given the right combo, maybe we can duplicate the effects without having to lose anyone. It'll take more work, but might be more effective.

>>
You untangle yourself from Jennifer.

“I want to learn some rune magic. Last night, in my dream, I saw some of the runes. Angie helped me to learn them.”

Jennifer nods a bit and sighs, smiling.

“Very well. First things first, I'll go over the basics of rune magic in greater detail. Suppose you had the rune for, say, heat. And suppose you somehow managed to get that to cast as a spell. You'd get nothing. Heat from where? To where? In what amount? By what method? To produce or prevent what effect? Rune magic is about precision, covering all your bases, because any one aspect of the spell that you fail to properly describe could make it all blow up in your face, or worse. With that in mind...”

Jennifer spends the next half hour explaining key concepts of rune magic, mostly regarding necessary information. It's like learning a new language, though Jennifer says it's closer to a computer program, where the syntax and symbols are all your own. Rune magic spells are built from simple statements (move a quantity of heat from this location to another location), which combine with other statements to form more complicated components (draw in heat from around the caster, focus it into a single point, use that energy to create a fireball) that work in concert to for a full spell (Fireball).

You manage to understand the core concepts, but your finding that this seems a lot like needless busywork than actual spellcasting. You've already made a fireball before. It blew up in your face, but you did it. Jennifer nods and smirks.

“The difference is in efficiency of energy. Rune magic is incredibly efficient and flexible, but the depth of complexity and potential for extreme failure turns many people off.”

It's one of the later Dresden Files books. I'm sure QM has read it.
Basically, he sets his target on fire, then strips ALL the thermal energy out of that target and transfers it to the next one, leaving behind a burnt, frozen corpse. Super effective against vamps, as the burn, then all the cells in their body rupture from the sudden ice crystals.
>>
>>44459092
That sounds very efficient, and I am now realizing that we should probably try boosting our smarts before really doing rune magic. that or being very very meticulous with every spell we create.

You pull out your lighter and ignite the flame with a nod.

“Then let's put that on hold and focus on fire magic for the time being. It's simpler, and I'm already making good progress with it.”

Jennifer eyes the flame nervously, and you set the lighter on the floor, kneeling down next to it.

“Slow and steady, right? Lots of little exercises so I can master control.”

Jennifer nods, relaxing a bit.

“Precisely. You want to master the fundamentals so that the fancy stuff doesn't blow up in your face again.”

Jennifer coaches you through the process of expanding and snuffing the flame, and this time you're able to snuff the flame completely, and make it bigger than you did last time. You draw away a portion of the flame and sustain it without fuel briefly before resuming the other exercise, switching things up. With Jennifer's guidance you start to pin down the visualizations that you need for directing your internal energy, at least in terms of fire magic. You make a brief effort to do the same thing to move air without effect.

After a little while of practicing you draw a portion of flame away and sustain it, before trying to push it away from yourself, trying to see how far you can move the flame from yourself before it dies. It's only a matter of inches, but it feels like a mile, and the strain is nearly unbearable. You let it go before you burn yourself out, and sit back for a moment with a smile on your face. You could have learned this on your own, you never needed Jennifer for this, but having her here is making this go a lot faster. You do need a break though.

“I'm gonna go over my notes for Latin class for a little while. You're welcome to help me out if you want to.”

Jennifer shakes her head.

“I'm going to get started on the books you got for me while you do that. It's been a while since I've had the chance to read without interruption...”

She moves to your bed, taking the book on teaching with her, and makes herself comfortable under your blanket. You grab your notes from class and sit down with your phone, expanding the screen so you can skim the textbook, spending the next hour working your way through the exercises and brushing up on vocab. By the end of it you've got the basics memorized, although it's barely enough for a conversation. You don't know when you'll need to use the words servus or serva, but if you ever do, you're ready.

The soft growling of your stomach informs you that you're hungry, and with your focus broken you realize that it's time for lunch. Jennifer is still reading through her book, a content smile on her face.

You check your phone for messages and send Sammy and Andrea a text each asking how they are and what they're up to. Andrea replies first, letting you know that she's in her room at school right now, and just got dropped off a little while ago. Sammy is still at the house, tending to her father. A few minutes later you get a text from Sammy, which clarifies things somewhat.

Stephen is running the clan almost exactly the same way that Patrick did, and everyone understands that it's a temporary handing off of power. Stephen also announced the problems that Patrick was having with Jennifer to the clan, caused by his lack of control. He made it clear that Jennifer's desire to stay with or leave the pack was up to her, and commended her for her skillful manipulations that kept the pack in order, even if her methods were sometimes suspect. His speech was met with mixed feelings, but now that the pack is informed, people are working out ways to help Patrick out.

The cold and detached way Sammy described the events worried you though. There's not a hint of emotion in her summary, no update on Patrick's health or her own feelings. Then you receive another text while trying to decide how to respond. You can almost see the expression on her face.

“I don't want my parents to split up.”

You stare at your phone for close to a minute, taking it all in.

So, fire spark goes in, stronger fire spark comes out?

Personally I love how put together your universes are. I can totally believe that even without the protagonists kicking around the worlds still revolve. Or something like that.

> That's between them Sammy there is a lot of baggage, hurt, pain and anger on your Mom's side, and on your Dad's a distinct lack of trying to change or interest in even trying. Their relationship is up to them. I'm not going to force them back together, that'd be a great way for one of them to end up like my Dad. Dead with their throat ripped out by the other's hand.
