The sunrise on Coruscant is truly beautiful, you think to yourself as you look out your window. You bring a hand up to rub your eyes, as well as make sure you haven’t drifted off to sleep. You should have slept, you remind yourself for the hundredth time. Of course, you’d tried, but sleep is difficult one a day like today. Today is the day you take your Initiate Trials. The trials that will allow you to become a Padawan. You’ve dreamed of this day since you began your training years ago. You’ve considered yourself ready to become a Padawan for months now, and you know there are fully fledged Jedi that agree with you. Still, there’s always been some arbitrary reason you weren’t able to take the trials. Finally, though, there’s nothing to stop you. With the Clone Wars, the Jedi Counsel is trying to get as many Padawan as possible, this includes you.

You figure that the sunrise means it’s about time to start the trial. Usually they take them in bulk, but perhaps if you arrive early enough, you can convince the Master to start it early. Alternatively, you could attempt to get some sleep before the trials begin. After all, you do want to be your best for the trial.

You won’t get anywhere by waiting around, you reassure yourself. You get up from your bed and quickly get dressed in your robes. You’re relatively sure you won’t need anything when you take the trials, but still you want to be completely prepared. So, you take your training lightsaber with you to go take the trials. The halls of the Jedi Temple of Coruscant are well-travelled, even though the sun has only just risen. Although you can barely contain your excitement for your trials, most of the people you pass seem tense. You can’t forget, of course, that the Clone Wars still pose a threat.

You arrive in the chamber where the tests will be held. Master Shaak Ti, Master Yoda, and Master Windu are already there, and you can’t help but feel significantly more nervous that not one, but three members of the High Council will be presiding over your test. You stand in the room, and feel a bit proud that you’re the first one there.

Master Windu speaks first. “Ah! So, our first youngling has arrived. What’s your name, child?” He forces a grin, and you can tell he’d rather be somewhere else.

You open your mouth, and for a few moments, no words come out. Master Windu is very, very intimidating. Finally, you manage to remember how to speak, “Um... Telan,” you say, quietly. “Telan Vesc.” Master Windu nods, and Master Yoda speaks up. “Nice to meet you, it is. Not here yet, your fellow students are. Perhaps, begin the test we can.” You grin from ear to ear, and Master Ti steps forward. “Yes, I will supervise your first trial. Since it needs to be taken alone anyway, this works out well. Follow me, if you will.”

You follow the Togruta as she leads you into a side room. This is a small, near featureless room with only a table and two chairs set on either side of it. Master Ti sits in one, and motions for you to take the other seat. You do, and she offers you a reassuring smile. “This first test will only require to answer questions. Please, answer honestly. I will know if you lie.” Her smile doesn’t change, despite her somewhat intimidating words.

“For the first question, what do you perceive as the role of the Jedi in the Galaxy?”

You think on it for a few seconds, before finding your answer. “The Jedi are here to make keep peace throughout the galaxy, right?” you’re not entirely convinced it’s the correct answer, but Master Ti’s gaze reveals nothing. No apparent disappointment or approval. She doesn’t even look away from you, she just moves on to the next question.

“What is the most powerful tool in a Jedi’s arsenal?”

You ponder for a moment. This question is harder than the last, especially because there is a Jedi master sitting right across from you judging you for your every answer. Still, eventually you speak up. “The force, right? It’s what guides us, and what makes us what we are.” Again, Master Ti barely reacts. Although you’re not entirely certain, the Togruta seems pleased, if not particularly impressed with your answer. Still, she continues without a comment.

“The Dark Side is everywhere, even in the most innocent of places. You must be ready to resist temptation at all costs. Where do you believe temptation lies the most?”

This is a far easier answer, and almost with no hesitation you say, “Within ourselves.” Master Ti smiles faintly at your answer and nods, although she soon after returns to her expressionless mask. “There is only one thing left, child. Recite the Jedi Code for me. It is what we must live our lives by, and not knowing it shows you are not ready to become a jedi, and likely never will.” You nod. Of course you know the code, it’s hard not to at this point, as it’s said so often.

“There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.”

You don’t even think about the words as you speak them, but apparently it is enough for Shaak Ti. She stands up, and gestures for you to do the same. You stand, and the Master leads you out to the room you were in before. More Younglings and Initiates are here now, and Shaak Ti approaches the other Masters, speaking to them for a moment.

Finally, Mace Windu takes you to the side. “Master Ti tells me you fared well in your first trial. Good, but you should know that is the easiest one. Now, your second trial begins.” With that, the man promptly turns and leads you into a second room. This room is the opposite of the last one, with brightly colored walls and a wide window that reveals the Coruscant skyline. Master Windu turns to you, “Your second trial can go one of two ways. It is up to you. You may either meditate on the force, or display your prowess in lightsaber combat with a hood on. Which do you prefer?”

You unclip your training saber from your belt, and Mace Windu grins, this time genuinely. “Excellent. You’re bold. Normally you’d simple go up against training bots, but we need a more accurate estimate of your skill level, so, I will be your opponent. The Jedi Master unclips his own saber and extends it, the brilliant purple blade tinging the room in violet. You extend your own saber, the dim, colourless light of a training saber shines, and you get into your best fighting stance.

Mace Windu grins. “I am a master of all seven forms of lightsaber combat. Presuming your teachers are competent, you should know the first six. Which do you prefer?”

By the way, info on forms for those who don't know.

Shii-Cho is based around disarming opponents and is often used when no other form will work.
Makashi is a dueling form used for lightsaber to lightsaber combat based on fencing.
Soresu is primarily a defensive form used to block blaster shots.
Ataru is an offensive form based around flippy shit.
Shien is basically Soresu 2.0
Niman is a flexible form based around using both a lightsaber and the force at the same time.

You stand in the opening position of Makashi, prior to the salute, and Windu instantly recognizes it. “A duelist, huh? I’m impressed you stuck with it.” Makashi is a difficult form to learn, it’s true. Your teachers didn’t spend too much time going over it, which meant you learnt most of what you did by going over the archives and training in the library. You’ve become somewhat skilled at it, and you’re proud of yourself for that. Still, you’re sure your skills pale in comparison to Windu’s and he seems to know it too. He gets into a position mirroring your own, and the two of you go through the Makashi salute, standing equal distance from you. You begin to step forward, and immediately, Windu speaks. “Your feet are too far apart. They should be shoulder-width.”

You frown, and step back, adjusting your feet. As you do that, Windu lunges forward, bringing his saber directly at your chest.

You’re fast as you lunge forward, bringing your lightsaber into an overhead strike. Windu swiftly brings his saber up to block yours, and grins as the two clash. “You’re smart. Rather than attempt to parry me, you went with an attack, knowing I’d have to block or die. An intelligent move, but it presumes a lot of your opponent’s skill. If I’d have been slower, we both would have died.” He breaks the clash by taking a few steps back. He’s taking you seriously now, which is enough to make you proud. The Master is on the defensive. You step forward, leading your saber into a few probing slashes that are easily blocked by Mace. Finally, you feint to the side, swinging your saber into the Jedi Master’s side. He’s fast though, and he quickly blocks your attack, overpowering you. You try to step back, but Windu’s already after you, with two strong overhead slash. Although you bring your blade up to block them, you’re not quick enough, and your shoulders get shocked. Mace nods, returning to his original position. “Good. I’m impressed, you know what you’re doing,” he says, without a hint of irony. You don’t exactly feel like you know what you’re doing, considering how easily you were trounced, but still, you’re not stupid enough to argue with Mace Windu.

“Congratulations. You’ve passed the second trial. Go outside to speak to Yoda. He’ll let you know what to do for your third trial.” You head out to speak to Yoda, who seems to be doing nothing in particular. Yoda nods as you tell him what Windu said to you, “Ah, impress Master Windu, you have. Only one remaining trial, there is. Save this for when a Padawan graduates to Knighthood, we do, but with the Clone Wars, no longer have the luxury, do we.”

He leads you to one final room, “Craft a lightsaber, you must. A crystal, we shall provide you.” The room is filled with various different sorts of lightsaber parts. You’ve watched countless videos of lightsaber creation in the archive. You’re prepared for this.

You look over the hilts for a few moments, and eventually you pick up a curved hilt wrapped in leather with a crossguard made up of separate beams. Well, it would if it had a crystal. You spend almost an hour making sure the hilt is perfect before going to speak to Yoda. “I’ve completed the hilt of my saber,” you say, holding out the hilt you created. The Jedi Master looks over it for a few long moments, before giving a nod, “Impressive craftsmanship, this is. Come, select the crystal you must. Call to you, it will.”

He leads you to a small closet absolutely filled with crystals of all shapes and sizes. You gaze over all of them, and for a moment, there is a deafening cacophony, as if each crystal is calling for you at once, but as you focus, one voice speaks louder than the rest.

You reach out to the crystal calling out to you, and look to see a small, almost perfectly spherical silver crystal. Yoda looks up at the crystal you’ve selected. “Interesting choice, you have made. Durindfire crystal, that is. The last we have, it is.” It is a simple enough job to install the crystal, and before long your lightsaber is complete. Unlike most lightsabers though, yours doesn’t have a button or a binary switch. Instead, it has a switch that can change between two different saber lengths.

Yoda nods. “A Padawan, you are now. One more thing, there is. A master, a student needs. A Padawan, Obi Wan Kenobi has requested. Benefit greatly from a Padawan would Master Windu, Master Fisto, and Master Secura. Your decision, it is.” You can sense how seriously the Jedi Master is taking this, which is something you weren’t exactly expecting. It seems that even in times of war, a single Padawan’s training is important to Master Yoda.

You pause, mulling over the names. Luckily, you remember all of them, but you have some questions. “Master Yoda, what about you?” you ask. “A busy job, being Grand Master of the Jedi order is. If younger, I was, then perhaps.” You nod, understanding. You’ve heard stories of Master Yoda’s age, some of your classmates say he was old when the Jedi order was first created. You think that’s a bunch of Bantha Poodoo, but it’s no denying there is a deep wisdom in him that you don’t get without incredible age. “But doesn’t a master usually pick the padawan, Master Yoda?”

“In times of war, choose we cannot. If the Padawan chooses, easier it is.” You nod, taking all the masters into consideration. After a few long moments, you make your decision. “I think I’d prefer to be trained by Master Windu,” you finally say. “Surprise me, you do. Tough, Master Windu is. But skilled.” You nod. “Speak to him, you must. Younglings to attend to, I have.” With that, the Jedi Master hobbles away.

You trace your steps back into the room you last sense Master Windu. He stands alone, having already tested most of the Initiates. “Ah, Telan. You’re back. I assume your final test went well?” you nod, holding out your lightsaber for him to see. “I have completed the trials, and Master Yoda allowed me to choose my Master. I chose you, Master Windu.” Although you can’t see him, you can tell Master Windu is taken aback by this. It takes him a few moments to compose himself. “Well... that is interesting. You should return to your quarters. At the moment, there are no missions we can do.”

Where do you wish to go for the rest of the day you now have free.

Train with lightsaber. It is a Silver bladed saber with cross guard and size toggle wielded by and adolescent blind kid.

You hold your lightsaber tight as you head out to an empty training room. You switch your lightsaber on. It... felt different to a training lightsaber. The weight wasn’t different, obviously, but there was this sense of incredible power that one got just holding a true lightsaber. You take a few practice swings, and grimace slightly as you feel it. It weighs less than your training saber. Still, it feels right as you hold it.

It takes a few swings to get adjusted, but before long you manage to get the hang of it. The force flows through the lightsaber much better than it did your training saber, and you’re able to put what you learned from your duel with Master Windu to use. It’d be more useful if you had someone to help you, but you can feel your reflexes improving and adjusting to the different saber. Before long you’re not just as used to the lightsaber as you had been your training saber, you’re somehow more comfortable with it. It’s as if it’s a perfect fit, designed solely for you. You don’t make any serious breakthroughs with your training, but you manage to get more comfortable with your lightsaber.
