You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you had another negative experience that ended with Pandora storming out after losing at a video game. Afterward you placed the new AI into it's new physical form for the first time, only to discover it's displeasure with it's current situation, followed by it's request to be destroyed. Rather than destroying it, you put it into hibernation for the time being, hoping to find a way to give it what it wants.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You awake to the familiar buzz of your alarm, stopping as you lazily swat it off. You're getting pretty sick of waking up unhappy. You roll out of bed and rub the sleep from your eyes, noticing you have a message from R&D telling you the AI dog is ready. This perks you up; perhaps Pandora might be willing to look past her problems with you for this?

You get ready quickly, gathering your things and hurrying out the door. You're almost as excited about this as Pandora will be. You catch yourself anxiously shifting from one foot to the other while you wait for the heavy R&D doors slide open, pushing your way through once they are. You head into the back room where everyone is, doing some last-minute checks on the new canine android. It's about the size of a smaller golden retriever, a coat of soft, brown fur covering it's body. It could almost pass for a real dog save for the flat, nostril-less nose and several ports running along it's spine.

"Is it ready?" you ask quickly, foregoing social protocol.

"Just needs to be turned on and given a name, doc." Mouse says proudly, patting the machine on the head.

Two things to decide on, then.

Lets let pandora name it.
Not sure if we should turn it on now and let it run in to surprise her.
Or if we should turn it on in front of her.

I don't usually participate, but I got done playing SOMA and had a question:

Whatever we had as a test AI before Pandora got her physical body. Was it its own entity?

Is that the kind of question we shouldn't be worried about in this quest?
>>
>>44513398
I do... wonder what happened to the,
what happens to pandora too... whenever we finish testing.

Any drawing suggestions?

You figure it'd be best to take it to Pandora for her to see activate and name. She'd probably be interested to see what the activation process would be like from a third person point of view. Plus it might be a little tricky moving it from R&D to Pandora's room without incident. It is still a dog, after all.

You get it loaded up onto a dolly and head off to Pandora's room with Mouse following, a large, heavy-looking case in tow. She refuses to tell you what it is, saying it's a surprise. You're curious, but figure it couldn't be anything TOO terrible...right?

You arrive at Pandora's door, a rather impatient-looking Kevin waiting outside with a briefcase and a chip on his shoulder. You apologize for the wait, but he simply looks at the dog and sighs. This guy really needs to unclench sometimes.

As you enter, you see Pandora playing another game, some generic-looking guy in over-stylized armor swinging an unbelievably large sword chopping up monsters and such. She doesn't give you so much as a glance when you enter. So, rather than greet her, you simply hoist the dog up onto the table as Kevin begins setting up his work for today. You clear your throat. Pandora half-heartedly looks back at you, then back to her game. A short pause, then the controller clatters against the shelf holding the TV and game system as she bolts upright and sprints over to you.

"IS THAT A DOG!?" she actually screams, her hands landing heavily on the table as she nearly shoves her face through the canine's body. She repeatedly looks from you, to the dog and back again several times.

"Yes, Pandora." you say, suppressing a laugh, "We decided you could use some company, so we built it specially for you. This is your very own android dog." This is met with another scream as she buries her face in it's fur, hugging it as tight as her little hands will let her.

She's pretty enthralled.

>Start the lessons first, dog activation after
I doubt lessons would happen with the dog activated.
Though I doubt they'll happen otherwise because there's an unactivated dog here to distract her as well.

This was a terrible idea.

The tests before Pandora were purged. They never really became "individuals" like Pandora has and the AIs themselves were logged, filed and their memories and "consciousnesses" wiped. Pandora is still a prototype, but she's the first, and what is hopefully final, one to make it into this stage before they begin manufacturing them normally.
This entire facility is for testing her and subsequent versions or alternates of her. Once they have the data they need, the test concludes and mass production begins.
>>44513573
Guess you'll just have to wait and see, anon.

this is a damned if we do damned if we don't situation.

If we activate it now, there is no hope for lessons happening.
If we activate it later, well she ain't gonna focus on lessons.

But damn aint she cute.

I might go with an "Other": we can see if we can incorperate lessons into the activation. how to take care of a dog, dog facts, and just general rules to operate under. Asking Kev for advice i guess. Is he so unfun that he never owned a dog before?
Or is he a cat person.

>>44513827
Yeah I just marathoned the series during the holidays. Its a lot more schmaltzier than I remember. Still cute though.
>>
>>44513853
We kind of did that. AI 2 came from a parallel copy of pandora's conscious, wherein the glitch that gave her nightmares metastasized into its own independent entity. A spiteful yet depressed entity.
>>
>>44513853
You get sent into an underwater facility and turned into an android yourself, only to get chased down by other machines and helped by a scientist/robot waifu.

Kidding. Pandora is her experiences. Making another from the base code would be like having a new baby, similar with the second AI you currently have in hibernation, though it's incomplete. If you were to perfectly copy all her experiences thus far into a new body, it would start out mostly the same as her, but with different experiences it would grow to become different over time. Basically her own twin.

I one day hope for her to have something/someone like that.

I sort of wanna toss in another vote but i don't know what the situation is like at the moment.
>>
>>44514049
Technically, the upcoming military android will be her sibling.

The situation is do you activate the dog now and risk getting ignored by her playing with the dog or activate the dog later and risk getting ignored by her wanting to play with the dog.
>>
>>44514092
I vote activating it now. and maybe giving her some homework then. So its not entirely a wash. Make sure she understands that beforehand.

You hook up your laptop and go about starting it up, going through the same process you went with Pandora. In the meantime, you ask Pandora what she'd like to name it. She takes a short break from petting it to give it some thought, then decides on "Lucky". Makes sense, when you think about it. You remember her mentioning something about "Lucky" being her favorite dog in a dream she had. Not the most original name, but it's hers.

A few minutes later the initial procedure is finished and Lucky begins to wake up slowly, pushing itself to it's feet and opening it's eyes; the same blue LEDs that Pandora has in hers flicker to life. It shakes itself and looks around, locking eyes with Pandora, who wastes no time in shouting again and hugging it. The dog seems confused, but doesn't mind the affection, it's tail wagging frantically as it jumps up and down and rolls around with it's excited android master, licking her face much to her glee. It's the happiest you've ever seen her. You almost feel bad to interrupt it for lessons, but they're important. You just hope Pandora understands this and can pull herself away from the dog long enough to get through it.

Try as you might, text books and learning are no match for the pull of a brand new best friend and Pandora pretty much ignores everything you say after about a minute and ends up playing with Lucky the whole time. She teaches him to fetch, which is endlessly entertaining for them both. It's a little frustrating, but still cute. And more importantly, she's completely forgotten about how angry she is at you.

In the meantime, Mouse went into Pandora's charging room with her case, the occasional sounds of loud clanks, drilling and what can only be welding can be heard. Frankly, it worries you, but you trust her...somewhat.

You figure you wouldn't get very far trying to grab Pandora's attention back, so instead some homework might be a better idea. Kevin isn't pleased, but agrees anyway, though not without complaint. There's some arguing over the amount, but you settle on a few pages that cover a wide scope of subjects. You figure Pandora won't hear a word you tell her right now, so you set it aside to give to her later.

In the meantime, Mouse finally emerges from the room covered in grease and with a few scorches on her jumpsuit. She seems rather proud of herself, more so than usual, anyway.

"All done." she exclaims triumphantly, dropping her heavy case onto the floor with a loud "thud". You're still worried. "Panda, come see what auntie Mouse made for you and your new friend." Much to your dismay, Pandora immediately obliges, hurrying over with Lucky underfoot. You feel a little betrayed.

You all enter her bedroom to find it a little messier than when you last left it, but with a large addition; attached to the charging cradle is a small, round enclosure with a bright red button on top and an opening on one side. On the button is a picture of a dog's head smiling happily.

"This," Mouse exclaims proudly "is Lucky's own charging cradle. Pooch enters here," she motions to the opening "and sleep mode can be engaged. In the morning, once both of you are ready to go, you push the button and it automatically wakes him up, fully charged and rarin' to go."

You're rather impressed with how she tackled the issue of Pandora's wakeup program. Pretty clever, you must say. Still, you're admittedly jealous of the hug she got for it. Kevin just seems nonplussed.

Hell, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. You join in on play time with Lucky. Taking turns throwing things for him to catch and even looking up some videos on how to teach a dog tricks. He, like his humanoid counterpart, learns rather quickly and eventually he learns to sit, stay and come. He doesn't even require rewards, not that you could really give him anything, he simply does it because he's told to. Very obedient. The very model of a "good boy". Even better, Pandora doesn't even second guess the fact that you're all having fun together, except Kevin, who left already.

You must say, the dog saved the day. You're not sure what you would've done had it not been for this. However, you hope this isn't just covering up the problem. Only time will tell for that, though. In the meantime, you're just enjoying time with Pandora.

I'm going to call it for tonight. This cough is getting the better of me and it's getting late. But thanks for playing and if you enjoyed it, please vote for it on the archive and follow me on Twitter! Unfortunately I can't stick around to answer questions tonight. Sorry guys, still sick.
