Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

You've finally made it to Unfound and immediately confronted some curious characters. Nettie, the little girl tending a frighteningly equipped weapons store, was kind to give you a rather simple contract to complete while also giving you a discount from her store. Other than that, you found Unfound to have a rather unique and cozy atmosphere. You don't blame Ivan for wanting to be a Dustkeeper.

Your Contract with Connell has finally gone underway, and you soon found yourself delving into the yet-mostly-unexplored floor AA, the third deepest floor the Dustkeepers have uncovered of the Unfound facility thus far. And already, you've splatted your first few mutants while also nabbing a neat, rare piece of armour for Ley'ra to wear.

“Okay, Gavin. You can turn around now,” Bethany announces, causing you to sigh and shake your head. Rolling your eyes, you shift yourself on the steel bench of the locker room and turn around...

To see a frighteningly red pair of red goggles staring at you.

“Hi,” Ley'ra greets, her voice speaking through her facemask's intercoms.

“Hi,” you respond, laughing. Ley'ra pulls down her facemask, revealing her pale-skinned face with a smile. You turn to Beth. “Was it necessary to get us to turn around? She was just putting on armour.”

Beside you on the bench, Ivan turns around.

“Ah!” he yelps, startled. “I almost did not recognize you, Ley'ra.”

“It's me,” Ley'ra meekly responds. Sya'ra comes up behind her, patting her plated shoulder.

“I don't know how many people Ley'ra gave PTSD,” she snorts.

“Yes, Gavin,” Beth answers, shaking her head. “Girls need privacy.” To your dismay Ley'ra jokingly nods. Comet looks at her with a curious expression, but decides to nod along with her.

Out from the corner of the room, Connell walks out from behind a low wall, clapping his gloved hands together.

“Eugh, stalkers have slimy skin,” he complains, knocking his helmet a few times with his knuckle. He looks at the new armour-clad Ley'ra. “Suited up?”

“Mhmm,” she responds, holding her rifle tight.

“Right, let's get a move on,” Connell orders, grabbing his plasma rifle from the sling over his back. “No doubt the noise we made alerted other mutants around the area. Might not just be stalkers, but I've confirmed that nothing's coming our way right now.”

She was hit by a grenade shrapnel, back when we were with the Dustkeepers. It's still bandaged, but it doesn't seem to hinder her.

She's claimed to have suffered much worse wounds before.

true, it's mostly that what with the travelling super fast as rockets are wont to do. it's not very good if you don't have a lot of distance to work with, but I admit, Fuckhueg complex we know nothing about may have large open spaces whether it was meant to or not.

“Alright, let's go. Sya'ra, you're on point,” you say, giving her a nod which she reflects back to you.

“Aye-aye, cap,” she says, giving you a little salute before shouldering her rifle.

The line is formed up rather quickly after Connell gives you a nod that it's good to go. After patting the blonde's shoulder, she slowly opens the door leading towards the main hallway, aiming her rifle down the left before snapping back to the right. You follow suit, marching along right behind her.

“Lavender?” you whisper, sniffing.

“My shampoo. You like?” Sya'ra answers.

“Just didn't expect that from you.”

“Jus' 'cause I'm weird, doesn't mean I can't be girly.”

The dim lights get darker the further down you go, but the corridor doesn't seem to have anymore doors. Only a minute passes by before you get to the next bend, the corner in front of your group lit by an ominous red light.

Sya'ra stops at the corner, pinning against the wall. After confirming that your group is stacked up (and Comet is still holding up), you pat her shoulder and she swings around the corner, you closely behind. You almost pause when your vision is nothing but red, the next corridor completely illuminated by dim, red light. Wires hang down from the ceilings, and rubble populates the floor.

You see holes bored into into erratic intervals down the hallway. Small enough for a child to fit through, but not large enough for you or any of your immediate party members.
>>
>>44568917
This hall is much narrower than the one you were just in, but it still allows you enough room to manoeuvre effectively.

Sya'ra suddenly pauses. Looking over her shoulder, you see nothing... until far down the hallway, you see a black blur appear then disappear almost instantly. Several seconds tick by, but nothing else happens. The first of those wall holes is just seven meters ahead.

The air is thin, and your heart picks up once again.

Using hand gestures, you tell your group to crouch and wait for several moments, your shotgun pointed down the hallway. Very faint scratching noises alert you to activity down the hall, but you're not sure exactly what it is.

“Connell,” you say in as low of a voice as you can muster. You look back to him behind you, and he nods. “Any words of advice before we move forward?”

“Mm,” he responds, his baritone voice reverberating through you. “Shoot to kill.”

“That's not very reassuring.”

“I thought it would be, actually.”

After waiting a few seconds with your hand raised to keep your crew on standby, you wave forward, patting Sya'ra on the shoulder. You're impressed by her ability to move without hesitating.

When you get close to the first hole, you grab her shoulder and she immediately stops, pinning herself against the wall just a meter before the hole. Turning around to Connell, you point to one of the incendiary grenades attached to his belt. He takes a moment to understand what you're asking of him, but he quickly unbuckles the grenade and hands it to you.

You shuffle past Sya'ra with the incendiary grenade in your hand. With a hand gesture, you tell them all to back up a little bit. You pull the ring off of the grenade, and then wait a second before tossing it hard into the hole.

You're a little satisfied to hear something gurgle from within.
>>
SDA returns?

This pleases me.
>>
>>44569472
Immediately, you back off from the hole and sprint back to your group, who've shifted a good five meters backwards. An explosion rings out, and you feel the heat from the ball of fire erupt from the hole behind you. You flinch, covering your head, but you make it back into your position in the line.

Turning around, you see that something inside of the hole is on fire. Erratic and loud scratching of something bony against concrete alerts you that something's probably in excruciating pain right now.

An elongated, on-fire limb stretches from out of the hole, ending in a single, menacing claw. It thrashes about, and you see Sya'ra readying her rifle. As soon as the flaming body of the rest of the stalker tumbles out of the hole, Sya'ra looses three shots into its centre. The stalker slumps to the floor, its body consumed by bright flames.

“Sunny-side up,” Sya'ra laments.

>Continue past the burning body.

“Let's go,” you say, urging Sya'ra to move. She begins to walk, but you poke her before you get to the hole. The fire has died down a little on the corpse, but it's still bright enough to make you squint. Sya'ra looks at you, and you point towards the hole. She nods.

Rifle still pointed forward, she turns, slowly walking towards the hole entrance. When she gets close enough, she pops around, looking into it with her rifle pointed down. You watch her wait a few moments before she gives you a shrug.

“Nothing in here...” she explains, squinting her eyes. “It bends. Goes deeper into the walls. Can't see anything.”

You walk up to her and peer down the hole as well, your head butting her shoulder a little. Sure enough, the small tunnel bends to the right.

“They do that,” Connell says, coming up behind you. “Nothing we can do about that. We just need a strong point and rear, though we're all pretty well equipped to handle it.”

“I've got the rear,” Ley'ra pipes up from behind.

“I am here too with my shotgun,” Ivan adds in.

“Not much we can do but continue, Gavin,” Connell urges. You get back into formation, and Sya'ra begins to walk forward again. “I've sent a ping to postpone the assault. We were nearing 20 minutes.”

“Fair enough,” you say, following behind Sya'ra. “Keep your eyes and ears open at the back there... seems like they'll likely try to ambush us.”

You catch Sya'ra counting the holes in the wall up ahead. The next one is already close.

“Two more on the left walls,” she explains while approaching the next one. “Two on the right. One in the ceiling.”

The grenade probably scared away any other temporarily, if we move quickly we should be able to get past these without an ambush
>>
>>44569790
>Toss another grenade into the next hole (state which grenade).
Don't want to hold up the assault any longer than necessary, so I'm in favor of picking up the pace. Frags will have to do for this many holes. Not on the ceiling though. Gotta get creative for that one.
>>
Do those grenades have proximity mine functionality? I guess that would be too much to ask.
>>
>>44569790
“Sya'ra,” you whisper. She perks up at her name. You point past her to the wall hole so she can see. Slowly, she nods her head. She approaches the hole, stopping right before it to ready herself. Quickly, she pops around the side and aims down the hole with her rifle.

Immediately, she fires her rifle three times. Something's inside the hole, and it's erratically scratching at the concrete to get out. Sya'ra fires her rifle another three times, her loud shots echoing down the corridor. The scratching stops.

With her still aiming down the hole, the hallway falls into silence apart from the occasional spark from the burning corpse a few meters back. You and your group watch Sya'ra with anticipation, weapons aimed down the hallway in case anything comes your way.

What disturbs you most is that these stalkers don't scream.

“Poached,” she announces.

“Stop that,” you demand.

She gestures for you to come to her, her rifle still ready. You look into the hole and see the disgusting, disfigured figure of a stalker corpse, blood oozing out of several bullet holes in its flesh. Its limbs are tangled, and it seems that its body is blocking most of the small tunnel. Connell comes up from behind and whistles lowly.

“I guess that seals up one. Onto the next?” he asks, and you turn around to face down the corridor again. Sya'ra follows suit, and continues down the red-lit hallway.

You gulp when you come across the next hole. Or, rather, next set of holes. There's one on either side of the wall.

>Toss a grenade into each hole (state the grenade)

Sya'ra abruptly stops a good two meters from the next two holes, and you stop along with her.

“Frag the left one,” you whisper, placing your hand on her shoulder. “I'll get the right.”

“Time for some DP,” she says, lowering her rifle and then grabbing a frag grenade from her side.

You walk up next to her and exchange a knowing glance with her, a grenade in your hand as well. The two of you begin to creep forward until you each get right to the entrance of each hole, pinning yourselves against the adjacent walls. She wraps her index finger around her grenade's pin as you do, and you both nod at the same time.

At once, you both toss your grenades into your respective holes before breaking into a sprint back to your group. The familiar scratching noises tell you that something's down each of the holes. However, before the grenades go off, you hear gunshots from the rear.

Looking to the back of the group, you see Ley'ra with her rifle pointed down the back. A stalker was sprinting towards your group, but had evaded her shots and dove into the previous hole you had just come from. But before you can think about it, the grenades go off in both holes to the front.

You swing around to look forwards, but you see nothing but smoke coming out of the burrows. Nothing alerts you to any casualties.

That's when you notice the loud scratching noises coming from every direction.

“Hustle up!” Connell yells. “They're getting aggressive. I think they've determined that they can't ambush us.”

“Then, what do we do?” you ask.
>>
>>44571630
“They'll likely--”

Connell stops, pushing you against the wall and stepping past you to stand in the middle of the hall. He fires his plasma rifle in full-auto mode down the hallway. Several of the glowing light blue pellets nick the stalker's leg that was charging down from the front. You aren't sure where it had come from. However, the stalker jumps into the hole you had just thrown the grenade into.

“Shit, there's a lot of them,” Connell mutters.

“Let's go!” you order, your voice raised through the loudening sound of scraping claws coming from all directions. You're sure you feel them underneath your feet.

“This is more like it,” you hear Ivan say from the back.

“Both holes blocked,” Connell announces from the front after having peered through both holes. “You got 'em good.”

“Dude, you're insane!” Sya'ra hisses.

“Relax, I can take one of these at face value.”

“Two?”

“Maybe.”

“Three?”

“No.”

“Come on, let's go,” you say, tapping Sya'ra on the shoulder. “You're on point, still.”

“Right,” she answers, jogging to the front.

“Hell beasts!” Ivan yells from the back.

You look behind you to see two or three stalkers charging up from the rear. Ley'ra shoots her rifle several times, and one of them tumbles across the ground. The other two jump into the previous hole. Behind her, Beth has her shotgun clutched, her eyes sharpened while Comet looks anxious beside her.

“Scramble?!” Sya'ra asks.

“Yes! Go!” you answer.
>>
>>44571935
She takes off into a jog, her rifle held tightly in her arms. You take off, trailing her heels while you hear the rest of your group follow behind you. More shots are heard from Ley'ra's rifle.

“Got another,” she claims, but you continue jogging nonetheless.

The next hole is coming up, this one to the right.

“Sya'ra, fire into the hole as you pass it by!” you yell.

“Aye-aye!” she answers, slowing down slightly to ready her rifle. However, as soon as she gets close to the hole, two elongated limbs shoot out and wrap their claws around her head, pulling her forward. Luckily, her helmet protects her from the sharp appendages.

“Aaaah!” she screams, firing her gun inside the hole as the claws lose grip on her helmet. She hops back and fires her gun several more times into the hole, the claws trying to grab at her again in futile. “Shit, shit, shit!”

The stalker limbs going limp. You stop next to her.

Her chest heaving and eyes wide, she slumps against the wall behind her.

If it's a blind corner, sure, I'm down with that. If it's a continuous hallway, we might be affected too.

Kinda get the feeling the stalkers will just jump into a hole to protect themselves from most of the effects though.
>>
>>44572277
Coming to a stop next to her, you aim your rifle into the hole only to see the dead body of the stalker she had just killed. You decide to fire two shells into the dark tunnel for good measure.

“You okay?” you ask simply after turning to her. She looks up to you with a small smile creeping onto her exhausted lips.

“Yeah,” she breathes. “Damn, that was fucked.”

“Come on. Let's go, we have to keep moving.”

“Alright.”

You step back as she shakes her shoulders a little, walking to the front of you again. Nodding her head, she begins to move as she had before.

“Next burrow's coming up,” she says, her voice hardened. You look up to the ceiling and sure enough, the last hole is embedded right above the center of the hallway. Just beyond it is a bend that supposedly takes you to the next corridor.

“Seen this before, never wanted to see it again,” Connell comments from behind you.

“What do we do, Connell?” you ask.

“Bait it.”

You barely have time to register what he just said before you find yourself stopping just a few meters behind the hole in the ceiling. Sya'ra looks anxious, but you don't think you blame her at this point.

More shots from the rear alert you to Ley'ra's efforts in the back. You have to act quick.

You turn around to see your crew waiting on standby. In the case of Comet and Beth, anxiously. Ley'ra and Ivan both have their rifles trained down the hallway, though it doesn't seem like there's any stalkers approaching right now. However, you do see a dead one on the floor several meters behind you, having been taken out from Ley'ra's efforts.

With Connell's two words still hanging in the air, you stare at Beth.

“Hey, Beth—”

“No,” she answers, immediately.

“Just kidding, that look on your face was priceless,” you laugh.

“Fuck you!” She glares daggers at you.

Turning around, you pat Sya'ra on the shoulder for the fiftieth time. “Get ready, yeah?”

She looks to you with a dumbfounded expression before you begin to take another step forward.

“Wait, dude, you're insane!” she exclaims, but not without a small grin plastered on her face.

“Just watch my back. Oh, give me your knife.”

“'Kay,” she nonchalantly answers, pulling out her knife and placing it into your unfolded palm. “You're making me wet.”

“Please don't.”

You hear an audible sneer from Ley'ra in the back.

Stepping forward with Sya'ra's knife in hand, you begin to believe that this wasn't such a good idea. You take one last look to your group to see all of them with their weapons trained up at the hole, minus Ivan and Ley'ra who are guarding the back. Taking one last breath, you step out underneath the hole.

Two... four... no, six. Eight limbs immediately shoot out of the blackness and aim for your face.

“Aaaaah!” you scream, but the world lights up before you. Plasma, mana, and lead shower the limbs, dismembering all of them. While you're still screaming, two of the bodies jump down from the hole, their vertical, toothy mouths opened and determined to eat your face off.

You slip and fall on the floor and the stalkers fall on top of you, but not without melted limbs and bullet holes riddled on their bodies.
>>
>>44573225
“Eugh... eugh!” you moan, desperately trying to shake the bodies off of you. Two more bodies fall from the ceiling, but they're met with the same fate as the first ones.

After a moment of struggling, an outstretched hand is offered to you above your head. You immediately grab it, and they help pull you from under the dead stalkers. Brushing yourself off, you look up to see Sya'ra with a shit-eating grin.

“That was de-masculating,” she giggles.

“Shut up. You do it next time,” you snap.

“No, thanks.”

“At least you did not scream like girl, like I was expecting,” Ivan pipes in. You hear a loud knock as Ley'ra knocks his helmet. “Ow.”

Ley'ra shakes her head while laughing, moving forward with her rifle trained upwards. After looking into the hole for a little while, she gives you a nod and you form up behind her. The rest of your group obediently follows. Despite the empty corridors, the scratching noises is still ever present. As each of your group members step over the bodies while passing underneath the ceiling hole, they nervously look upwards.

You finally make it to the end of the corridor, Sya'ra stopping at the corner before the next bend. She exchanges nods with you before popping around this corner. However, after advancing only through a small hallway, your group comes out into a widened, rectangular room that's at least ten meters tall and twice as wide. There's also what appears to be biomass blanketed across the entire room's floor, grouping up at certain areas while pulsating with who-knows-what underneath. It's black, just like the flesh of the stalkers.

“I think we found the benedict,” Sya'ra comments, having stopped before the first pile of fleshy stuff.
>>
>>44573252
“That we did. Get ready, they're gonna swarm any second now!” Connell says, his flamethrower primed and in his hands. Without warning, he suddenly lights the immediate biomass ablaze, the fires spewing from his nozzle radiating intense heat against your cheeks.

As if at once, the entire room begins to shriek. Now you've heard a stalker scream.

“They're coming from the hall!” Beth exclaims, and you hear both Ivan and Ley'ra begin to fire their weapons at the rear.

Sya'ra steps back beside you, her rifle ready while she looks in every direction. Off to your left, you see three stalkers drop down from the ceiling.

“I think we're in hell, man,” she mutters.

The three stalkers immediately leap up and charge towards your group. Shots are heard from the back as your rear presumably deals with more stalkers. You pull out your hi-ex grenade and pull the pin, counting to two seconds while the stalkers quickly close the distance.

Before they can get to you, you finally toss it and watch as it lands right in their path. As soon as the three stalkers charge over it, it explodes, shredding apart the one in the middle from the shockwave while knocking over the other two.

You hear a curious sound from behind you, so you turn to see Comet firing her Herald gun, a rain of mana bolts effectively melting a stalker that was charging at her. Beth had just fired her plasma shotgun twice at another stalker.

Painful shrieks from from your front as Connell effectively showers a group of four stalkers with his flamethrower. Three of them are engulfed in the hellish flames while the fourth leaps out of the way, but not without being blinded from the bright light of the fire.

The two stalkers that were knocked away from your grenade had quickly recovered and are now charging at you. The one on the right has both of its claw-limbs ripped off.

To your front, Sya'ra had just put down one stalker while another creeps up to her on her left, unknowing to her.

“Sya'ra!” you yell, causing her to look at you with wide eyes. You gesture her to duck out of the way as the stalker suddenly lunges forward. She immediately catches the hint and dives towards you, falling to the ground at your feet while you fire a buckshot at the stalker.

It hits the stalker in the side, throwing off its lunge as it slumps against the floor.

You're satisfied to hear Sya'ra shoot her rifle while lying at the floor towards the stalkers charging you to your left. The one that wasn't wounded slumped to the floor, but Sya'ra's rifle clicks empty before she can shoot the other one.

Without hesitating, she throws the empty magazine out and jams in a full one from seemingly nowhere, perfectly chambering in the first round before firing a quick three shots, downing the other stalker.

“Shit, you're fast,” you breathe.

“Kiss my boots, later,” she flirts.

“No.”

“I'm telling Ley'ra.”

“That's probably going against you.”

“I know.” As she begins to stand up, you hear something coming from behind you. “Easy over.”

“What?” you ask, confused. She pushes you aside expertly fires her rifle several more times.

“Ley'ra, I'm on four!” she yells, eyeing the body of her latest victim.

“Twelve!” Ley'ra yells back. “And, I can hear you from here!”

“I might steal him if you don't impress him soon!”

“Shut up!”

“Get out of here, stalker!” Ivan yells, interrupting the fiasco as he fires both his rifle and shotgun into the gut of a stalker that had nearly climbed on top of him.

“Shit, Ivan! You're insane!” Beth says, melting the face off another with her plasma shotgun.

“Half the room's on fire, guys. Might wanna start think about backing off,” Connell says from the front, frying another stalker with his purging flames.
>>
>>44574190
“Most of their numbers are thinning out from the rear,” Ley'ra says through her facemask, walking up next to you, her red goggles even more red due to the amber light from the flames. “We should be clear to extract soon.”

You really do think you're in hell right now. But, you think you're the demons.

Still more stalkers drop down from the back of the room, determined to defend their hive. This time, you're counting at least nine. Another five or so drop down behind them. All of them begin to charge.

Curiously, you note that the stalkers in the back are slightly larger than the others, and some unknown, disgusting green-coloured fluids is oozing out of their mouths. You note that the metal floor sizzles as the ooze touches it.

“Stalker moms! Get back!” Connell suddenly yells, turning his flamethrower's nozzle towards the direction of the oncoming horde. Most of the stalkers avoid his fires, but they circle around the flaming biomass and continue the charge. He begins to back off until he joins up with your group, pulling out his plasma rifle.

“Everyone, fire!” you yell, your shotgun pointed towards the stalkers. Ley'ra and Sya'ra kneel beside each other and the rest of your group joins your line. At once, all of you fire your weapons, shredding and melting down the first of the horde.

The larger stalkers arch their necks upwards as they run and begin to spew torrents of the green ooze in an arc towards your group. You almost leap out of the way, but instead, you're pushed aside by Comet.

Before the acidic fluids can rain on you, a white force-field projects out of nowhere and blocks it all, the ooze flowing down to the floor harmlessly. Comet has both of her arms stretched out in front of her, her hood off. The suit underneath her Wastelander armour is glowing.

“Keep firing!” she says to your dumbfounded crew. Ley'ra and Sya'ra are the first to snap out of the stupor, firing their rifles through the barrier and putting down several of the stalkers. The rest of you follow suit.

“I don't know what you're doing, Comet, but keep doing it!” Beth exclaims.

“Ah, it hurts,” Comet responds, her arms shaking.
>>
>>44574743
“Shit, shoot at the stalker moms!” Sya'ra says before aiming at the large stalkers in the back. You see two of them immediately fall from the focused fire of both her and Ley'ra. You fire your shotgun at two stalkers creeping around the barrier to the left, shredding them both with buckshots while the rest of your crew continues to thin out the group.

Suddenly, the barrier drops, and Comet falls to her knees. Thankfully, the torrent of acid had stopped, all the stalker mothers having been killed.

The last four stalkers attempt to flee, but not before being engulfed by Connell's flamethrower. They shriek in pain before being put out of their misery by more shots from your crew.

All the stalkers in the vicinity have been killed.

“What was that?” Connell asks as he casually goes back to burning away the biomass, paying mind to avoid the floor sizzling from the acid. “She's got a shield projector?”

You quickly kneel beside Comet who now looks drowsy. Before she collapses, you let her lean her head against your shoulder. Beth kneels down beside you and slings her shotgun over her back.

>”...I don't know.”

“...I don't know,” you say, looking at her. She can barely keep her eyes open. “She's... I'll tell you back at the base.”

Connell remains silent for a few moments, continuing to burn up the rest of the room. The parts he had lit up before were now burning out, smoke rising to the ceiling. The room was almost entirely metal, so only the biomass burned.

“I'll hold you to it, Gavin. Looks like we're done here, the assault began three minutes ago,” he explains, nodding his head. The rest of your crew remains silent, Ley'ra and Sya'ra keeping vigil for any more stray mutants. “Not the first time I seen tech like that, though.”

“The shield projector?” you ask, looking up to him.

“No, the suit.”
