Hi, internet. It's the new year and therefore I have arbitrarily decided it is time to put my triphat on and find out how much lower opinion of the 1d4chan wiki has fallen. I've made some reasonable site alterations under the hood in the last couple of weeks so now is as good a time as any.

So probably the most noticeable change is that I am now redirecting all traffic to https and plain http is thus deprecated, thanks to LetsEncrypt being totally free to use and get a well-trusted certificate from. You now you need have no fear that anyone is packetsniffing whatever horrible pornography it is you can find on my site.

I have also abandoned the pitiful stable branch of nginx and switched to mainline for glorious ( and not-yet-feature-complete; come on, server push!) http/2 support, which will make accessing the site marginally faster. Generally though I think the server handles traffic very well and serves pages pretty damn fast, which is good for a bloated php application like mediawiki. This is combined with some tinkering and tweaking of caching to further improve performance and reduce the server load; generally it's all very good.

As always, the purpose of the wiki is to be a hopefully useful or at least faintly entertaining resource for /tg/, so if you have any suggestions or recommendations for things that could be done to make it better I am all ears. One thing I've been on the fence about lately is improving mobile support, as roughly half of the traffic now comes from mobile devices, and the desktop site is rather shit for a handheld screen; I'm running the MobileFrontend extension at the m. subdomain, but it's not exactly well-used. I'm considering installing a new responsive skin as a catch-all, but that's a fairly major change.

I'm not sure that's my fault, but I suppose it's always possible; looking in your folders I can see that everything seems to still be there, but there seems to be a lot of discrepancy between the paths you're linking to and where the files actually are. It looks like you got halfway through moving things around at some point and then got distracted by something shiny and wandered off.

1d4chan is okay, and I owe it a lot - I spent some time there before I actually lurked on /tg/.

I have no real complaints with it, even if I don't spend too much time there now. It all works fine for me, no errors while browsing. Maybe it's just me, but it's gotten a little less humorous and a little more informative about many of its articles - not sure if that's a bad or good thing.
>>

>It looks like you got halfway through moving things around at some point and then got distracted by something shiny and wandered off.
That was my first thought as well, but I thought all the links worked fine this summer; I only started getting email complaints about them in October.

Then again I have no idea how computers work so it was probably the thing you said.

I have an aversion to taking a strong stance on editorial policy. Certainly I'm not trying to encourage it one way or the other. I expect it comes down somewhere to information being objective and humour being subjective, so when you have the choice between something "funny" and something dry you'll see less objection to the latter. Plus jokes don't always age well.

>>44629852
I don't remember doing anything significant to the place in october. Do you want me to poke it now and edit your links so they least point to whatever it looks like they're supposed to be, or leave it to you?

Any possibilities of an app for mobile or is that way too much work?
>>
Thanks wikifag, 1d4chan's a huge part of /tg
>>
Can we make a push to update the wiki to be more in line with modern /tg/? I admit I haven't been in awhile, but last time I checked it was still full of Matt Ward jokes, which is like complaining about steroids in baseball, except that at least steroids are still around.
>>
>>44630048
Developing a mobile app would take way more time and energy than I have. However, I do want to make the site more mobile friendly. As I mentioned in the OP, I have set up the subdomain m.1d4chan.org which is serving the MobileFrontend extension and is much nicer to use on phones, so try that out and see if you like it. It doesn't offer all the features of the desktop site though. I am of a mind to start trialling a responsive skin like Foreground, but making that the default would be a relatively major change.

>>
>>44630354
I am starting to become slightly concerned that more people have found /tg/ from 1d4chan than the other way around, but there's not a lot I can do about that now. 44M posts in, /tg/ hardly has the exclusive culture it did back in the heady days of 2008. It would be nice to know some kind of usage metrics for /tg/ though so I could compare it to the traffic 1d4chan gets.

>>44630950
Over the last month, traffic breaks down as roughly 50% desktop, 40% mobile and 10% tablet, for however accurate Google Analytics is at working that out. I'm kind of surprised at those numbers too, as the wiki's default display really isn't mobile friendly and I know google ranks down mobile-unfriendly pages in searches from those devices. Not to mention people putting up with the wiki on tiny phone screens; I can barely tolerate it when I've checked on my phone, it's awful.

Back in high school, I started getting interested in 40k, and was obsessed with finding out as much as I could. 1d4chan kept coming up, so I lurked on 1d4chan for months-a year, then lurked on sup/tg/ for months-a year, and then finally lurked on /tg/ itself for months-a year until I was 18 and allowed to post. This was years ago, back when sup/tg/ wasn't flooded by quest threads.

I never used any online forums or community based websites before I discovered 4chan aside from BZPower (I always hated making accounts on websites) and I haven't used any since.
>>
>>44631400
I suspect 40K will be the largely common factor when it comes to such tales. At least you had the decency to lurk.

I share your distaste of having to register for things; 4chan was fairly formative for me in that regard, and thus I've held to a policy of enabling and supporting anonymous contribution in the stuff I do. I do try and tell people off for registration elitism if I see it happening, but I don't patrol the wiki too hard.
>>
>>44628812
Sometime ago (months or so), I was working on copyright licensing stuff, and got interested in what license 1d4chan was under. It's currently CC-BY-NC-SA, but was under the GNU FDL (presumably the default for MediaWiki installs) until sometime early 2013. What motivated the change?

(TVTropes changing unilaterally from CC-BY-SA to CC-BY-NC-SA bugged me, and inspired the creation of "AllTheTropes" from the pre-change archive, but I'm not so bothered by 1d4chan's change. Given how much of our content is derived from stuff owned by Hasbro and/or Games Workshop, any attempted commercial exploitation of that content would be frowned upon by much larger legal forces than little old us...)

>>
>>44631445
I can't fathom why people would start posting on a site without lurking to get a sense of the culture/rules/functionality, and decide whether is right for them, before taking part. I lurked on BZPower for a year or two before actually making an account.
>>
>>44631531
Long enough ago that I'm afraid I can only guess at my motivations. I suspect I was learning about new configuration options at the time as to why it changed. BY and SA are obvious choices; NC I guess I just don't like the idea of people taking someone else's work and making money on it without agreement. A little hypocritical given I run advertising on the site, really, but I need the income now, and I figure advertising to support a platform isn't ethically comparable to selling prints of someone else's art, or whatever.

>>44631600
It is what users make it. I guess the Warhams fans are more motivated to edit.

>>44631671
Thanks.

>>44631704
Unfortunately pageviews were taken out of mediawiki core many versions ago and they're actually a reasonable performance hit on a relatively high traffic wiki - having to update counters on every hit adds a lot of overhead, plus with caching mechanisms in place you can't even guarantee that any particular request will actually end up hitting the relevant code. I made noises about trying to export this kind data from google analytics a while ago (can't do hits for all time, but can do hits for the last X time period) but it turns out it's actually kind of a pain in the arse to try and do in any kind of usable fashion. I might have another go at it when I have some time this weekend.
>>
>>44630532
I think I learned about sup/tg/ first, then 1d4chan. I don't remember what led me there, but looking back at the oldest images in my /tg/ folder, it might have been monstergirl related...

I definitely remember thinking "this sup/tg/ place has cool stuff, but I wish more threads would come up each day" and only later realizing (from the main page, which I had never visited before -- always looked the "archive" index) that it was an archive of the best stuff (in some people's opinion) that was happening somewhere else.
>>
>>44628812
Thanks for keeping it up. 1d4chan may not be perfect but I've found it a great place to start with tons of useful knowledge.
>>
>>44628812
Thank you for your work, Wikifriend.

The most obvious thing that comes to my mind for advice would be: Storytimes are a big part of /tg/ culture, the biggest it could be argued, and the only way a newfag can find the real classic is by hearsay and maybe "best of /tg/" threads very occasionally(the good stuff never gets actually screenshotted, like STORYTIEM's stuff). There is a ton of gold on suptg yet that nobody who came five or less years ago has seen. You should get a bunch of oldfags together for a remembrance session, and add some links.

I'll admit to being a questfag, but also like /tg/ grognardy. It's a shame if cool stuff is lost in time. Undermines board culture like nothing in the present can.

I joined 4chan in 2005, but I didn't get into /tg/ until about 2009, when I decided to make a plug for trying out "D&D-like stuff".

Several years on, I'm now a D&D player who has founded several roleplaying groups that have, in some cases, gone on to run the homebrew system I made in 2010 in corners as far as other continents, and I'm about a month away from starting my third epic-length DMing campaign in this system.

Without 1d4chan, I don't think I would've had the creative drive to make such things, as the lore and suggestions of games past have been a massive help in that regard. It's been invaluable to me, not just as a homebrew DM, but as a relatively new D&D player, and as a sort of knock-on, I'm fairly certain it's indirectly responsible for our new FLGS of about three years gathering speed (my gaming tribe were almost the entirety of its initial customer base, and we told friends, and they told friends, and they told friends...).

Thanks, Wikifag. You're alright.

The problem is that rather than just leaving the Deletion template on a contentious page everyone seems to feel the need to blank the content entirely, which is irritating and I wish they'd stop doing it. It might be shitty content, but page blanking only makes it confusing and causes more effort for anyone who comes over the page and wants to judge whether or not it should actually be deleted.

1d4chan was how I found /tg/, and a lot of stuff I've written has ended up on there, some of which I almost wish to forget exists. But I don't undertsnad the hate for 1d4chan. It's a free wiki. If you have a beef with it, edit it. Instead of complaining, get off your arse and do your bit for 1d4chan to unfuck it up.
That's the real problem. Not enough people are willing to invest time into 1d4chan, but are perfectly willing to slam it on /tg/ all the time. Next time someone complains about it, they should go and work on it themselves to make it the way they think it should be.

My opinion has always/will be high for 1d4chan. It's what I use to initiate people into the grimdark and where I go to get those comfy feels, thanks for what you do m8. If I ever run into you, drinks on me.
