“One…two…three!”

As soon as the last number exits out of your mouth, the entire parties (barring yourself on account of your broken arm) swing their weapons at the barrier as hard as they can. There is a tremendous noise as shards of ice go flying everywhere, either turning into a fine mist upon contact with the air or prickling everyone’s skin with a slight pinch of winter.

The mist settles down enough for everyone to have a good look at the damage. Despite the fact that said barrier of ice was created by magic, it seemed to be just as susceptible to mundane means of destruction as much as vanilla ice was. There’s a sizable chunk missing that’s at least the size of a cantaloupe, running along the rim where the door meets the frame.

Just as you’re unsure as to whether or not they hit it hard enough, the several tiny cracks on the translucent surface grow even bigger as another tremendous impact weakens the barrier. You don’t need to look into everyone’s eyes to know that they’ve got the butterflies in their stomachs.

The bad news was that Ghoul was still alive and kicking after Fitz had apparently emptied an entire magazine of .40S&W rounds into its putrid flesh. The good news is that you managed to significantly weaken the barrier.

Oh, but it gets worse. Ghoul was apparently rampaging against the door as hard as it could, and would be upon you within the minute.

>Keep hitting the ice.

This. With that said, Pixie is currently up to full MP, as is Knocker.

I'm keeping track of both of their MP offline since you guys don't have any means of tracking their spiritual power yet. So when you give them an order that involves casting spells, they might not be able to do it due to a lack of MP.

You’re quick to intervene before the rest of the party strikes the barrier again. “Let Ghoul finish it off!” You hiss in a whisper that hopefully everyone but the demon hears. Hard to do with the ungodly racket of the alarm and the banging on the door, but it would seem that everyone heard it. Their weapons are held aloft, poised and ready to go, and your demonic allies are also on the offensive and at the ready.

A few more tense seconds pass before the inevitable happens. With a final CRACK that echoes up and down the floors, the ice shatters and the doors burst open.

Fangs dripping with both saliva and poison, the Ghoul lunges out of the corridor…and promptly slips on the ice you had Knocker lay down earlier. Its snarl turns into a confused grunt as its feet scramble to find secure footing. There’s no such luck, as all it’s able to do is spin and turn in wild arcs before coming to a particularly violent stop when its face meets the cinderblock of the stairwell walls.

There's a particularly nasty sound of what suspiciously sounds like severe head trauma. Given how fast the poor bastard was sliding, it's nothing short of a miracle that it's still alive, let alone semi-coherent with its tongue lolling out.

Entry 69 huehuehue

As per your instructions, Knocker was able to create a designated area where you would be able to run without slipping on the ice. Right now, it’s a complete straight shot to your prone target, give or take ten feet.

“Everyone hit the bastard!” You shout. “Pixie, bring the lightning!”

“Got it, Master!”

As the others start their run, Pixie unleashes her spell. The scent of ozone suddenly fills the area as an arc of blue lightning races through the air. Flesh broils and the demon howls as the lightning sloughs off bits and pieces of smoking flesh.

MacKay gives the command for Knocker to strike as Fitz moves in with the Oni’s weapon poised to cleave. Victoria and Brady have likewise eschewed their prior piercing weapons and instead have gone straight to the blunt, wielding a steel pipe and flashlight respectively.

The Ghoul is soon obscured by the sight of four humans and two demons consecutively laying into it with all the force they can muster.

In spite of being unable to use both hands to wield the Kobold Club, you are still able to deliver a powerful blow to the undead creature. From the CRUNCH you felt underneath the point of impact, you’re sure to have broken…something. You can’ really say. It’s turned into a mosh pit at this point.

“iNsOLeNT fOoLs! yOu WiLl pAy fOr tHiS tREaChErY!”

Some guys just can’t take a hint, even when they’re undead and within a few inches of death. In spite of multiple broken bones and leaking a putrid liquid from multiple wounds, the Ghoul refuses to die.

Rotting claws lunge out, swiping and cutting wildly without any sort of restraint or hesitation.

Much to your dismay, you aren’t quite fast enough to dodge. But with that said, you are able to keep a somewhat sturdy footing as you withstand Ghoul’s rending claws. They tear into your good arm at least two inches deep.

Healing magic or not, that’s gonna leave a mark.

>-5 HP.

Suddenly, you feel slightly light-headed, as if you’re overcome with a physical and mental fatigue. You can feel your body suddenly start to heat up, and sweat begins to break across your brow. What is this? This wasn’t one of the side effects of the painkillers, and you know for a fact that you aren’t allergic to any sort of medication whatsoever.

Maybe it’s something that the demon did?

At the edges of your wound, it looks like there’s some kind of viscous material leaking from where the Ghoul struck you. You don’t even need to get three inches close to it before you can smell what you suspect to be some kind of pus.

Oh God, that’s fucking disgusting.

But it doesn’t seem to last. The feeling is quick to run its course through you before you overcome it. Within seconds, you feel your internal body temperature return to normal, and whatever Ghoul left inside your arm seems to have completely faded away. But just to be safe, maybe it’s time you reschedule your annual inoculation a few months earlier than normal.

Still, the situation is quickly spiraling out of control. Judging from the way Victoria just vomited down four flights of stairs, it looks like her body wasn’t strong enough to resist whatever it was that Ghoul hit her with. Japanese mechanic collapses onto the ground, shivering uncontrollably.

Knocker seems to have taken a pretty bad hit in the process. While the old demon isn’t down and out for the count, there’s a rapidly-spreading bloodstain across its brown cloak.

With that said, the others are still good to go, albeit a little bloodied and slightly out of breath. Your demon awaits your commands.

“Zio!” you finish. “One more time!”

Once more, the smell of gathering ozone precedes the flash of light and the crack of thunder that bears down upon the Ghoul. It lets out one final, hideous screech as the wrath of the gods courses through its body. Limbs convulse and burning flesh emits noxious fumes as the undead creature becomes little more than a charred husk of cooked meat.

When Brady uses his club to smash the creature’s head, its entire body breaks down, leaving nothing but a pile of smoldering ashes and a lukewarm, electronic key card. The Englishman reaches a trembling hand to grab it, and presents it towards you with a tired look on his face.

“Well that went well…” He manages to say in between huge gulps of air.

You quickly stuff it into your pocket and sprint as fast as you can to Victoria. “Pixie, heal everyone, now!”

She nods her affirmative, and begins zipping around the group to heal them. Repeated cries of “Dia!” go ignored as you reach your fallen comrade.

You flip her over and prop her up against a cleaner section of the wall. She’s still breathing, and it doesn’t look like her airway is obstructed by vomit. The wound that Ghoul left her runs along her left shin and finishes at mid-thigh. The presence of pus at the edges of the wound confirms that she’s suffering a more long-lasting version of whatever it is that the undead hit you with.

“C’mon, Victoria,” you mutter under your breath. Your hands tremble slightly as you fish out another first aid kit. “Stay with me here…”

Fitz and MacKay are guarding the stairwell and corridor. Brady is quick to come right beside you and help you unpack the contents of the kit. “Jesus Christ, what the devil happened here?”

“Elevated temperature…” You observe after putting a hand on her forehead, “Perspiration and hyperventilation…she’s a long way from healthy, but I’m…I have no idea what’s going on.”

While some of the color has returned to Knocker’s face, the old demon’s countenance looks grim. “It got her with Blight. Nasty spell. On top of being sick, there’s poison that’s sapping away her vitality.”

You can feel the blood drain from your face. Pixie raises her hand. “I just learned a new spell, Master! Demons use it whenever someone gets poisoned. One flash of light and then the poison’s gone as if it was never there.”

You don’t do a very good job of hiding your relief as you exhale. “Okay, okay, okay. Just…cast it on Victoria. That’ll be one last thing to worry about.”

“Understood. Posumudi!”

The only visible effect it has on Victoria is to even out her breathing.

It takes a bit of poking and prodding, but Victoria manages to open her eyes. “Oh hey…” are the only words to come out of her mouth before she starts violently coughing. There’s acid build up in the back of her throat from the vomit.

“…this is the best we can offer.” You hand her a bite-size chunk of ice you took from the remains of Knocker’s barrier. “

She manages to force a weak smile as she rolls the ice in her mouth. “Magical ice…ah, it’s just like a fairytale…”

Does her optimism ever die?

You take a moment to collect your thoughts before you speak to the group. “Okay, we’ve got the keycard, and if what Pixie and Knocker said is true, then there shouldn’t be any more poison in Victoria’s body. But she’s still not out of the danger zone. What we need to do right now is to get the hell out of here and find medical attention for her.”

Everyone nods in agreement, but Victoria raises her hand. “I can’t exactly move my legs all too well at the moment…”

Brady moves over to Victoria and offers her a hand up. “I’ll help her walk. MacKay is better at fighting than I am. We need every fighter we’ve got protecting us.”

“Understood,” you respond. “Just be careful not to move her around too much. If we get into combat, can you need to either get away from the front of the battle or shield her from any incoming attacks?”

“There’s a reason why chivalry started in Europe and not America.”

“Then I’ll get point,” Fitz says, hefting up the Oni cleaver. “Let’s see anyone try to make it past me.”

MacKay looks bemusedly to Knocker. “And we have rear guard. Let’s hope we survive.”

Once you’ve all made yourself comfortable and healed up back to max health, you all set off towards the uppermost floor on the stairwell. Brady has got Victoria in a “three legged man” carry as he helps her up the stairs, and Fitz leads ahead with her cleaver in hand. Father MacKay and Knocker scan the shadows and dark corners for anything that shows signs of moving.

You’re very close to your goal, but all of you are on edge. This is make-or-break right here, right now. One single bad fuck-up could ruin the whole thing and cost you your whole lives.

You pull out the Administrative Key Card and prepare to swipe it into the electronic lock.

“Let’s get out of this shitehole,” Brady tells you. “The first round of drinks is one me.”

“Free…tune-up…” Victoria manages to say, “At family’s shop…one-time offer…”

“Thank God we’ve made it out,” Father MacKay says, making the Sign of the Cross with his hand. “There is light at the end of the tunnel after all.”

Perhaps now is a good time to break out the levity. Since everyone (barring MacKay) seems to be making jokes, it should be alright for you to do so as well.
You give Fitz nod and a smile. “Thanks, Fitz. Maybe I’ll put this on my resume later. You did well out there, too. Just make sure to buy me a drink after we all get cleaned up. Then we’ll be square.”

She looks surprised before she makes a crooked smile of her own. “Sure. I’ll definitely do that.”

You pause and turn to the rest of your group. “And all of you, thank you for your help. We wouldn’t have made it out here alive if it wasn’t for all of our efforts combined.”

“And you, you sodding wanker,” Brady retorts. “Major props to you for ponyin’ up and being the leader. Don’t sell yourself short, lad.”

You roll your eyes in a good-natured way. “As long as you don’t forget that Pixie is the real MVP of the team.”

The aforementioned demon titters in glee, and even Victoria and MacKay manage to find it within themselves to chuckle.

“So let’s get the fuck out of here.”

On that final quip, you swipe the key card into the electronic lock. The gyros moan and shriek as the metal bits scrape at each other, but within a few moments, the mechanism starts unlocking. The sound of hissing air fills the area as three gigantic screws unlock the quarantine doors.

With a groan, the giant doors slowly swing towards what lies beyond the exit. As soon as the tiniest crack appears, a brilliant light forces you to shut your eyes. Your companions are suffering from the same ordeal, judging from their own reactionary noises.

All of them are wearing green armor, with gold helmets protecting their faces. It's not even the standard stuff you see in the recruitment videos and movies. It looks too futuristic, almost to the point of being impractical.
