"Why would a patrol have plans about the whole front extending across the entire hemisphere?"

You cannot help scratching the side of your head as you examine the datapad. After returning from repelling the Nationalist incursion, and ordering the wall guards to be on high alert, you and Bandit went to the only place the both of you could think of to discuss this datapad in private: the cockpit of AT-TE 7330.

Bandit is standing on the pilot's seat, leaning over your console to read the datapad upside down. "I don't know mate, but this looks serious. My boy must've hacked into the encryption on the pad. There, wait, look at that list."

You turn your attention to where Bandit is pointing. You read down the list, "'Nargal, Cresgut, Razor City, Termat, Ximi,'" You stop and look back up at the Major. "Jaxx. Are these the cities held by Loyalists forces?"

"Exactly mate, and then some. From what I understand, many of these locations are secret bases the Loyalists have formed before the civil war, many as fall back shelters to hide valuable military equipment from pirate raids."

"Which city is the capital?" You begin scrolling further down the list of cities. Dargun, Fanule, Calcut, Quill, Demantrie, all cities that are spread across the main continent.

You hear Bandit clear his throat. "Well, that's the thing. None of these cities are the planet's capitol."

"Wait," You set the datapad down onto your lap. "Are you saying the Nationalists are in control of the capitol? Why aren't we there, supporting the defenses of the Loyalists? They couldn't have been overrun in the couple days we have been here, surely. What city is the capitol? We should march on it now!"

Bandit tilts his head to the side, pursing his lips while looking out the side window of the cockpit.

You begin to stand up from your seat and reach towards the button to open the hatch. "Bandit, we have to bring this to the General at once and-"

The Major reaches out and grips your shoulder, hard, causing you to wince and stop from opening the cockpit. Bandit's flinty gaze halts any sputtered response in its tracks. "Lieutenant, I am sorry to say, but you have an incorrect assumption about how this war is going to go."

You slowly sit back down, looking up at Bandit in confusion. "What do you mean? We are here to repel the Separatists from the system."

The scout's harsh expression warms to a bitter half smile. "Well, that is technically correct, but misinformed. You see, Jabiim's capitol, Choal, is the home of the governing Senate of Jabiim. It was this government that voted to leave the Republic and join the Separatist cause. There was no hostile takeover by the Nationalists, no Separatist invasion, just a vote that boiled into a civil war."

Bandit removes his hand from your shoulder and sighs. "The Loyalists are actually technically terrorists fighting against the Nationalist government so to remain in the Republic."

You sit in stunned silence. Bandit, seeing your reaction, has trailed off and seems to be waiting for your response. You try to process what he has said as shame, anger, indignation, guilt boils through your veins.

Those that betrayed their world caused the death of the men under your command. Your hands curl up into violently shaking fists.

It is their fault they died.

Your chest is hollow as you speak, fearing the answer to your question. "Does that mean we are fighting against democracy?"

A period of silence extends between you and Bandit, you unwilling to press the question, him unwilling to answer it. The grizzled scout fidgets with his beard as he stalls for time, trying to formulate an answer.

"Mate, you have to understand." He waves his left arm out by his head in a vaguely circular motion. "This war is not a matter of fighting or defending the idea democracy, though we are doing that by proxy. What we are fighting for is the solidarity of the Republic. These systems, whether they are led by business men, dictators, or radicals, they are all guilty of acting as traitors against the Republic."

"But," You are unable to speak louder than a whisper. "I was always taught that the Separatists were the ones who were fighting without democracy in mind. If we do the same, how are we any different than them?"

You can see Bandit halter and flounder for a response. He stops his attempts to respond right away by pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers, closing his eyes, and pausing for a moment.

You press on. "I understand that we are soldiers Major, and as soldiers it is our duty to follow orders and fight for the Republic, but, I, I do not know." You stop, thoughts roiling through your mind.

Without democracy, what is there to fight for? What did the deaths of all your brothers mean, why are you even on this planet if all you are doing is usurping the authority of the democratic process so that rebels can be put into power? Why do you have to bleed and possibly die for their war?

A vivid image develops in your mind. One of Carla, covered in blood and bacta patches, her limp body being strapped onto Bandit's speeder. You remember how careful the Major was as he lifted her slight frame, how he took the time to strap her in securely but not too tightly as to cause further harm.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44694132
She is a Jabiimi Loyalist, is she not? A fighter against the Nationalist government, one who fought by your side and proved her worth to you. You went out to speak with her because you were concerned for her well being after engaging the fallen Jedi, and now she lays half dead because you left to get reinforcements.

"You see," Bandit begins speaking again, his voice measured and calm. He drops his hand from his face and looks directly at you, holding your attention. "We were bred to fight for the Republic. It is our purpose in this world, to struggle alongside our brothers, to bleed and even die for them. We are warriors, and unlike many Mandalorians both of the past and present, we know what side we are on."

"The Separatists are working to dismantle everything good in this galaxy, led by evil Jedi and heartless corporations that only care for power and profit." At this point Bandit is becoming heated. "If we do not defeat the enemy before us, in whatever form they arise, we will have failed the purpose we were placed in this galaxy to follow through. We need to stick together Lieutenant, we are all brothers in this war."

You see Bandit's eyes glint in the refracted lights of the hanger. "We fight for the Republic, for the lives of every brother spread out across the Galaxy. We are an army, and we must act as one."

Bandit quickly averts his eyes from you, clenching his fists as he almost whispers, "You have saved not only my life Jinx, you saved the lives of my boys. Without you, I," Bandit cuts himself off as his attention is captured by his hand, spread out below him.

"If nothing else, I will fight with you because of your compassion as a commander, not for ideals that mean nothing on the battlefield." Bandit slowly reaches down and picks up the datapad in your lap. "I must report this to the General." He turns away from you after saying that, pressing the button for the cockpit to open.

Bandit steps up to the lip of the cockpit, preparing to jump down.

"Jinx?" You ask.

Bandit freezes before relaxing again, turning back to look at you with a smile."Yeah Lieutenant, Jinx. I knew you were listening to Phi and I talking earlier, and I think it suits you."

"Why Jinx? What does it mean?" You do not really know how to feel about the name. You have never heard it before back on Kamino.

"Oh, mate, uhm." Bandit scratches his beard for a moment. "Here, let me give you an example. You know how the Depot collapsed onto your AT-TE after the GATs rammed it?"

You nod, not really sure where he is going with it.

"Well, you survived, didn't you? In that moment where everything was uncertain except that you ought to have died, you didn't. You jinxed death." Bandit waves to you, back to his jovial self. "Well I have to go mate bye."

He leaps off the side of the AT-TE out of sight, and you hear him land on the ground before melding into the sounds of the rest of the hanger.

You do not feel particularly satisfied with that explanation, but then again you still do are not sure what it means. You jinxed death? Barely escaped death?

Does that mean you are lucky? Perhaps that is the case, especially after going into battle without wearing your armor. You should go about fixing that, you are not a Jedi or anything like that.

Before you climb out of the AT-TE to go searching for your armor, you realized you did not ask Bandit where the armor repair is, you sit in your commander's seat and speak quietly to yourself.

"First Lieutenant Jinx." The phrase brings a small smile to your lips.

--

You have been walking for the past hour, it slowly dawning on you that you were completely lost.

It does not help that the rain had increased in its intensity to the point that half the base has been filled with small rivers of water.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44695744
Nor does it help that a line of AT-OTs have been walking into and around the base, offloading troops that all seem to be Jabiimi Loyalists. Hundreds of men, and women you note, are running around, offloading boxes and building what you surmise to be shelters and store rooms attached to the castle.

This war truly is kicking into gear, you suppose. You may be surrounded by rebels, but they are rebels fighting for the Republic.

Such an idea makes your head spin, which likely is why you have been completely drenched in rain and are running into a nearby door leading into the castle.

As you enter the door, the screeching wind and rain is muffled by the thick walls. You take a moment to shake the water out of your hair before turning to examine your mud covered boots.

Grumbling to yourself, you work to scrape the mud off on the edge of the nearby wall. "I do not even know where my other uniform is, and now I have to walk around like a waterlogged.. Uhm." Like a waterlogged what? Your clothes are waterlogged, but you are not sure what you can compare it to. Odd.

After you get as much of the mud off as you can, you turn and look at your options for walking. There is a corridor to your left, right, and straight ahead, In front of you in the distance you can see the massive throne, and to the right and left you see doors going on as far as the eye can see. You shrug to yourself and turn right, examining the series of identical large, oval topped wooden doors as you walk. At random you decide to open a door and walk in.

Inside is a room much larger than you thought, an expansive room filled with all series of workbenches and storage lockers all holding pieces of weaponry and, more importantly, armor. All around you see clones working double time on repairs and refits, and after a moment you notice your distinctive armor hanging up at the edge of a line of walkers with a clone engineer brushing it off. Looks like you found the armor just in time.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44695771
As you approach the engineer you call out. "Hello brother, it looks like you have my armor!"

He looks back at you dubiously. "CT dash Four Two slash Four Fifty Eight? Newly promoted to First Lieutenant by the General himself?"

You nod. "Yes, that is me. I would like to pick up my armor now, if it is possible."

The engineer gives a grunt in response. As you reach out to pick up your armor, he speaks. "We were unable to paint your armor with the colorings of a Lieutenant. There's no paint on this damned planet for some reason, and everything we brought with us either went down in flames or disappeared. The locals probably stole it, bunch of damned scrappers if you ask me."

You cannot stop yourself from responding. "The Loyalists are our allies, engineer."

He gives you a half lidded expression utterly devoid of emotion. "I don't care if they are Senators here for a party, theives are theives." He looks back down to the datapad in his hand and presses a few buttons as you change into your armor. No clones even bat an eye as you undress and redress into a new uniform before placing on your armor piece by piece.

"I also have orders to allow you to request a weapon from our stores. I don't know why Kenobi felt the need to order me to do this, but alright. I can show you to what we ha-"

You both freeze as you hear a cackling laugh ring out near you. With your helmet, the final piece of your armor, in your hands you turn towards the source of the sound.

A clone in battered armor covered in yellow X's.

"I have you this time Lieutenant!"

In his hands, you see a massive electronet launcher aimed directly at you.

"Ah hell, not this psycho." The engineer deadpans.

You do you have time to think, let alone talk.

So instead, you act.

Your helmet is already being flung over your head towards Xtreme as you move. The best way to escape an ambush is to either outrun it or eliminate it before it has a chance to catch you off guard. If you work fast enough, an ambush can very easily turn in your favor.

You take a bounding step before leaping at Xtreme just as your helmet collides with the center of his. As you fling yourself into the air towards him, you see the electronet gun launch out despite your immediate action.

It makes sense, you decide as you dive into the expanding net. Mass driver gunners are trained to fire accurately even under artillery bombardme-

Your thoughts, much like your joints, freeze up into a twitching mess as the electrodes rattle your nerves. Where before you were a missile with a guided purpose, now you are a limp man in horizontal freefall.

Unfortunately for Xtreme, he is directly in your path. While his blind fire was effective, he did not account for the force of nature called inertia.

You feel your fall get interrupted with the sound similar to a surprised baby Kaminoan squeak, and in an instant you are on top of Xtreme, the both of you twitching uncontrollably while completely immobile.

Distantly you hear the engineer's laughter, quickly interrupted by the sound of stomping boots.

"Doc Diver, you hear to watch the show?" The engineer's question plagued with chuckles is responded with an unamused tone.

"Deactivate the mess these blasted idiots have gotten themselves into and follow me. Jackpot wants to see them."

You see white boots walk into your vision and then stop to turn towards you. You see the familiar helmet of Diver, a Mark 1 helmet with a large red cross painted across and around the viewports. Without seeing his expression, the look sends chills down your spine.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44697459
As the electricity is cut from your limbs, the doctor speaks. "I do not have time for your stupidity, Lieutenant, though it would be unfounded to leave you unpunished for such an unprofessional action."

Xtreme begins to giggle underneath you, causing Diver to direct his attention to him. "You as well, I think." The giggling stops mid breath.

You have a bad feeling about this.

"Put these two on a hover cart, if you will." The Doc stands back up. "And reactivate the electrodes, max power."

The two of you are bodily lifted up and placed on the hovercart after it is brought over.

Diver places your helmet in front of your eyes. "I better not find you outside of your armor again, shiny."

You hear him step away. Xtreme groans beside you.

"What did you do to piss off the mad doct-"

Everything begins to shake and vibrate insanely quickly, your whole body convulsing before everything goes black.

--

"I have delivered your mass driver gunner and your new commander, Jackpot."

Your consciousness swirls from a black nothingness to a woozy, swirling state of existence. You open your eyes to see the black slits of your helmet staring back, as empty as the loneliness you felt on Kamino.

"Thank you Diver." Jackpot's curt reply draws you to look away from your visor and the gateways to your past and to struggle to look around the room. You see Diver turn and leave the room, passing by a figure of vibrant colors sitting in the back corner- Crusader? - Xtreme sits up beside you, the net pulling on you to make you half way sit up.

Xtreme yawns. "Ah, Jackpot, you're the one I have to thank for that wonderful little nap! I was wondering when you would sneak back out of the shadows."

You struggle to sit up, the nets being bound around you tightly- The sound of metal grinding against metal, footsteps approaching you, a force pulling you up further, the sight of a purple 7 bordered with gold -

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44697483
The nets no longer hold you as a vibroknife slices through its ropes.

Jackpot works to pull the nets off of you, and after a couple minutes both you and Jackpot are free.

You take a moment to look around the room. It is a room filled with boxes of all sorts, it seems to be a large storage closet of some sort. You do not smell any traces of perservatives, so likely not food storage.

In the corner lounging on a box is Crusader, fully kitted up with his vibrobroadsword sitting in its sheath beside him. On his belt you see the lightsaber he took off of the fallen Jedi, secured so not to be taken off easily. Standing in the center of the room is Jackpot, completely white in armor except for the 7 on his helmet and bands of purple on the back of his hands.

"Jackpot, was kidnapping the Lieutenant really necessary?" Phi is sitting off to the right in his pilot's armor, with a brand new brestplate you notice, sitting on the floor with his back against a tower of boxes. Beside him is Twitch, standing with his arms crossed.

"You heard what Diver said," Twitch says. "Jinx here got himself caught up in an electronet. I suppose our benevolent doctor decided it would be more efficient to transport him. Blasted fools, the lot of you." Twitch finishes with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"Twitch, man, come'on, lighten up." Phi lightly pounds his fist against Twitch's calf. "He's done good on us so far, and he saved your life a couple times."

"And nearly killed me even more times." Twitch grumbles, turning away from you.

Phi responds with a mild chuckle.

Jackpot simply stands silent, gazing at you. Crusader seems to be distracted, while Xtreme is standing beside you and stretching out his back.

Time passes. Xtreme straightens out and stands with his hands on his hips. No one seems to want to continue talking.

Silence permeates the room. You take a moment and think: At many points in the last few days you have been subjected to similar situations where dead silence is the mode of communication, wherein the lack of communication is communication in of itself.

Or, instead of it meaning anything, your men are waiting for you to speak, but speak about what?

A list of potential discussion topics roll bounce around your mind, dozens of things that have confused you, that you have let happen without asking for explanation, and mysteries concerning your crew that your training never prepared you for. Such as, what has Jackpot always been up to? You rarely ever see him except for in inexplicable situations or the turret of the AT-TE, and for the latter you have no visual evidence that he is in his chair.

There's Xtreme and his wildly erratic shifts in mood, from being a raging maniac to dead serious in a heartbeat. His attempted ambushed notwithstanding, you feel that you can understand him roughly half of the time, yet for some reason you still trust him.

Twitch and his abrasive personality may be annoying at times, but during times of need he always pulls through. He is far more cynical than even the veterans who lost limbs that were sent back to Kamino to teach rather than go back into battle. He is focused on the potential death of everyone in every situation and seemed honestly terrified during every situation.

Crusader is obviously a fanatic of Mandalorian culture, but nothing like those back on Kamino who pretended to be Mandalorians when you were a child. He seems to honestly believe in Mandalore and its 'essence.' Before you saw him as the exuberant, confident gunner who can hold himself well in a fight, but now that you see him listlessly sitting on a box, you decide there must be more to him.

Then Phi, the first one to accept you in this crew. Where everyone else are curiosities, he seems rather bland by comparison. You wonder why that is the case.

After a long period of thought with no reaction from anyone in the room, you end up sighing in frustration. This is getting rather absurd, everyone just staring at you in a storage closet when there's a war that needs to be fought, nukes to be uncovered in cities, an investigaion to be held concerning the Jedi you ran into, Loyalists to support, an AT-TE to repair and refit, a million different things run through your mind.

You still haven't eaten today, either.

"All right, everyone." You begin, tone slightly sharper than you intended. You tone it back slightly, remember, Stay Professional. "So, how does this all work? I've been kidnapped so you are in control, but you haven't said a word so far. What's the deal, do I talk first, do you? I'm entirely confused and frustrated at this turn of events."

A thought pops into your mind. "Jackpot, is this about what you wanted to talk to me about before the nuke hit?"

"I have no idea what you are talking about, Lieutenant." Came Jackpot's immediate reply.

Xtreme whistles a long drawn out sound that slowly descends before dropping off completely. You look up at him and say incredulously, "Xtreme, what was that about?"

"Jacky's keeping secrets." Xtreme coos.

"I am not." Jackpot shifts his helmet to look at Xtreme.

"Ah blast it all to hell," Twitch cuts in, slicing the air in front of him with a sharp movement of his hand. "This better not be another one of your plots that will get us all killed, Jackpot. You know how well the last one went. Blasted Geonosian worms." He shakes his head.

"There is nothing to talk about." Jackpot states again, his monotone voice keeping steady.

"Come'on guys, let's halt your paranoia for just a minute, alright?" Phi says while sitting up straighter against his box. "If Jackpot has something he wants to tell the Lieutenant-"

"There is nothing I wish to speak to the Lieutenant about."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44699789
"-Then he can do it on his own time." Phi does not miss a beat after Jackpot's interruption. "Regardless, we do have something to talk to you about. Jackpot," He points at the rigid clone. "Give Jinx a datapad."

"Oh, so now it's alright to call him that?" Twitch snaps.

"Call him what?" Phi looks up at Twitch, voice completely innocent. Jackpot is reaching behind him to pick up a datapad from the box behind him and is giving it to you.

"Jinx, you blasted nut!" Twitch cries out as you take the datapad and open it up.

"Twitch, by the Force, you knew that we weren't going to call him that without asking him first!" Phi crosses his arms in offense, causing Twitch to begin sputtering and waving his arm about.

"What? No, you said it first Phi!"

Xtreme steps towards Twitch. "No Twitch, you know what we agreed to. No naming the Lieutenant prematurely, and here you are doing it. It's almost like you are trying to get us all killed with your antics, don't you know how bad it could be to misname a fellow brother?"

"I, what?" Twitch takes a step back into the corner, pointing an accusing finger at Xtreme. "No, no you psycho, that's not what's going on!"

You tune out your crew for a moment and focus on the datapad in front of you.

It is.. a series of ranks, names, and designations? It is a short list, with only 4 on it.

> [] Private CT-42/522, "Cardinal."
> [] Private CT-37/88, "Gravedigger."
> [] Corporal CT-6/8031, "Old Man."
> [] Private CT-20/20, "Deadeye."

You look up at Jackpot. In the corner you see both Phi and Xtreme dogpiled on Twitch, the latter spraying a can of what looked to be whipped cream all over Twitch's exposed face. You hear loud cursing and roaring laughter, enough so that you cannot help but smile.

"So what is this Jackpot?" You ask.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44699820
"This is a list of potential replacements for Big's position in AT-TE 7330. As the commander of the AT-TE, you have the final decision as to who is chosen." Jackpot stands stoic as the corner becomes more chaotic. Twitch seems to be fighting back now, much to the glee of Xtreme. Whipped cream is spraying everywhere.

"So how does this work? Do I pick a trooper and interview them?" You wave vaguely at the datapad as you speak.

Crusader rumbles from the corner, voice low and slow. "We discuss them now. As your crew, we have our opinions as to who would be best, though none of them can compare to Big."

"Crusader," Jackpot states. "You know that we cannot keep that position open during future engagements. Not even for Big."

Crusader waves his arms at Jackpot and slumps over. Has he been drinking?

"Anyway, Lieutenant." Jackpot is interrupted as Xtreme runs between the two of you, retreating from the victoriously roaring Twitch who is spraying him with the whipped cream. Phi is laughing hysterically in the corner of the room, laughing too hard to move.

"Which soldier would you like to know about first? They all can be interviewed in person immediately, though I would suggest you take the time to come to an agreement with the rest of the crew beforehand." Jackpot finishes in a bit of a huff.

Interviews? For a replacement? You have never heard of this happening.

"Tell me more about this 'Deadeye.'" His name and designation caught you attention first. "I would like to know if you all know him and how, what his position was before, other qualifications, personality traits, how experienced they are, everything basically."

"Self-proclaimed," Jackpot begins. "He was the rear gunner of Thunderbolt VI under the command of Lieutenant Sparks before being wounded in the campaign before our current one. I do not personally know him, though I believe Twitch does." Jackpot motions to Twitch, who is sitting beside Xtreme, the both of them giggling like cadets. Phi walks back over to his previous spot, rejoining the conversation.

"I do not know his personality. He has acted as an effective rear gunner for at least 4 months of combat, 5 months of deployment." As Jackpot finishes, Phi raises his hand and looks to you. In a moment of confusion, you nod to him.

"Deadeye, right?" Phi asks. Jackpot nods in response. "Well, if you think Xtreme is arrogant in picking his own name, this clone will blow him out of the water. Never in my life have I met a more pretentious clone. Well, excluding Twitch, of course."

"Ah, blast it Phi, you know that was a long time ago." Twitch calls out. "Though you are right, Deadeye will brag about his accomplishments to you for days on end. Where Crusader's stories may get tiresome after the third or fourth time hearing them, at least he's a good storyteller, you know?"

"You do not like my stories?" Crusader asks as Twitch was finishing his sentence. Before he can continue on his speedy rant unaware, Xtreme elbows him in the side.

"Hey, what was that for?" Twitch snaps.

"Twitch, Crusader." Xtreme emphasizes Crusader's name, pointing his head at the trooper in the corner right beside him.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44701581
"Ah, uhm, well of course Crusader's stories are all amazing, and I, uh, I look forward to hearing them every night," Crusader slumps up to his feet. "OH HELL DON'T BREAK ME YOU BRUTE." Twitch is cowering behind his hands.

Crusader takes an unsteady step towards Twitch before falling to his knees beside him. He wraps his arms protectively around the shaking Twitch, causing him to try and jolt upwards but is held still by Crusader's grip. He rumbles softly, "I knew you liked my stories Twitch. You just never wanted to say it, but I knew."

"What? What, no, Mando get off, no, Your stories are garbage a-and I definitely don't like how you portray us all as heroes!" Phi and Xtreme break out in yet another bout of laughter as Twitch ineffectually squirms to escape from Crusader's iron grip.

"Yeah, yeah," Xtreme says between laughs. "I know Deadeye. Real punk, that one, but he knows how to shoot a laser cannon, that's for sure. Survived 4 iterations of Sparks suiciding his walker before he got too wounded to keep fighting for a while. He is just a bit too full of himself, even after returning from the medical station. Like Jackpot said, he named himself, and while he may have the experience to back it up, I just don't like him."

Phi shrugs. "He always wanted to be the center of attention, even as a rear gunner. He would always beg Sparks to direct him against the thickest portion of the enemy lines, and because of how damned insistent he was, Sparks ended up having no choice but to do as he said. That's how he lost Ol' Thunderbolt IV and V. Other than that, we don't know much about him."

Crusader seems too busy coddling Twitch to voice an opinion, though you guess he already did.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44701601
"Okay, let's move on." You may want to talk with Deadeye yourself later, though you feel you might as well run down the rest of the list. "Next, how about 'Gravedigger'?" At the sound of his name, everyone in the room goes silent. It stalls you from continuing what you had to say for a moment. "Uhm, what do you all know about him?"

As before, Jackpot begins. "Failed as an ARC trooper, not due to inadequacy but for overly aggressive conduct against the enemy and, on occasion, the local populace. Though the latter is only a rumor and has never been proven. Gravedigger served, unofficially, in nearly all branches of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Commander and he were once old friends before Gravedigger remotely flew a medical transport carrying wounded Separatists into a droid battalion, eliminating the forces and preventing our positions from being overwhelmed."

"Gravedigger used to be the Commander's platoon mate," Phi says. "Next to us, he led the finest AT-TE crew in the army. That was, before he and his crew were abandoned by Skywalker's forces on Felucia during the retreat. His crew was killed along with his AT-TE, but he survived for months in the wilderness before returning to our forces. He was, well, changed afterwards."

"Ah yes, Gravedigger." Crusader releases Twitch and sits back, sloppily. "He is yet another clone who has embraced the glory of Mandalore."

Xtreme rubs the back of his neck. "Some say that he had a stint with Death Watch awhile back, but it was never proven. Everything about his is a mystery after Felucia, to be perfectly honest."

Phi sits rigid, silent.

Crusader continues after the period of silence passes. "Gravedigger is a fine warrior, and an even finer tactician. If he were to join our crew, he would be able to give you brilliant insight as to what option you ought to take during battle, Lieutenant."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44701617
Twitch unfurls himself from the ball he was sitting in, saying, "That psycho is on the list? Well, I suppose he wouldn't be much different from the rest of you nuts. Last I heard though, Gravedigger is flying a V-wing up in space above, fighting in the fleet battle."

"Army? Fighting with the Navy?" Xtreme interjects. "Now that just sounds absurd."

Twitch puts his hands up into the air. "I don't know X, that's just what my people heard. Hell, I would consider him nothing more than a ghost or a legend if I hadn't been there with the Commander when he returned from Felucia. By the Force, was he a wreck."

You do not feel all that much more enlightened about him, and your crew seems unwilling to continue. "Well, how about," You look down at your datapad. "'Old Man'?"

"Ah, that old coot is still alive?" Xtreme asks. "I haven't heard from him in months! The old fool owes me 500 credits though."

"He owes you 500 X?" Twitch demands. "Oldie owes me and my people over 120,000 credits! And he hasn't paid back a single one!"

Phi looks over to Twitch. "How does he owe you that much money, Twitch?"

"Well, uhm," Twitch fidgets for a moment. "You remember when we had that house in the Coruscant when we were on leave?" Everyone but you nods in agreement. "Well, there were a few, uhm, 'clients' that were renting rooms there. These clients had clients of their own and, well, one of them was the Old Man. He spent some quality time with an exiled Princess of some system or other for the whole time we were on planet. He never paid though, and, well, the rest is history."

Xtreme stares at Twitch, mouth hanging half open. "Are you saying the old coot who lost 500 credits to me in a game of Sabacc is the reason why we were chased off of Coruscant by the police?"

"Well, yeah." Twitch says.

"Wait wait," Phi says. "Which Princess are we talking about, the one with the blonde hair, or the Pantoran?"

"The blonde." Twitch grumbles.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44701639

Phi sits back and whistles, intertwining his hands behind his head and looking up to the ceiling. "Oh, do I remember her. Lucky codger." He trails off.

"Uhm," you say, unsure of where the conversation has gone. "Why is he called the "Old Man”?”

"That is easy to explain, Lieutenant." Jackpot says. "Old Man is a trooper who has the defect of aging at triple the rate of the average person rather than double the rate, such as us. He has also gotten premature grey hair."

"Okay, tell me more about his combat specifications?" You ask.

"Old Man is a pilot of an AT-OT. He has never fought on the frontlines in his entire career as a soldier." Jackpot says.

"Then why is he on this list?" Your eyebrow is rocketing into low orbit at this point.

Jackpot says, "He asked me to be a part of the crew. He feels the war has passed him by, and he wants to fight before his early death catches up to him. Technically, he is only approximately 40 galactic years in age, and he has been a soldier for all of it."

You nod slowly. "Crusader, your thoughts?"

His response is a rumbling snore. "Ah hell," Twitch says. "The behemoth has fallen asleep. How are we going to get him out of here?"

"Well," Phi responds. "You're the one who asked the question, so I assume you will do a good job in following through, yes?"

"Wait wha-" Twitch says as Xtreme pats a hand on his shoulder.

"I believe in you Twitchy, you have all your "people" to help you out, so I think it's agreed that it's been delegated to you. Isn't that right, Jackpot?" Xtreme looks to Jackpot as Twitch flounders for something to say.

"This is correct." Jackpot states with the barest hint of amusement. "You addressed the problem, Twitch, so it is now your dudty to follow through with attending to it."

Twitch turns to all three, trying to sputter out some response before throwing his hands up into the air and making some inarticulate noise of frustration. He goes silent, crossing his arms.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44701654
You smile for a moment. "Okay," You begin again, "And what about Cardinal?"

Everyone but Twitch and Crusader respond with a shrug. Xtreme is the first to speak, "No idea sir, he's a shiny like you, fresh from the home world."

"From what I understand, he is in line for ARC trooper training." Phi offers. "He just arrived with the new shipment of replacements for the 42nd Battalion, but I'm sure we could get him to fight with us."

"I felt that a brother closer to you in experience, Lieutenant, would be a good choice, and I assumed that you would know who he was." Jackpot explains. "Though I fear I may have been mistaken."

"Another frakking shiny will only get us all killed." Twitch mumbles. Everyone else promptly ignores him.

That is your report, well, partially.

Cardinal is not a name you recognized, though you will admit you do not remember many of your brothers in your birthing cycle.

Also, for everyone suggesting interviews: Who do you want to do first? It's obvious that you can't do both at once, and this whole process is very, very unorthodox for the military. Officers being able to choose their replacements? The soldiers would lose their goddamn mind if they knew what was really going on.

The reason you aren't is because you don't know any better. Good on you, I suppose.

"Captain Stripes!" Eh, as a name generally chosen during training, when everyone has the base armor, that seems a little odd, don't you say?

>>
>>44702068
I'm pretty sure that Jinx's shtick up to this point was that his time on Kamino was crushingly lonely (he didn't have a nickname up until now), and the only fun he had was avoiding the pranks of the others (Observer wrote that Jinx was never an active prankster).
>>
>>44702068
it could be that, or Jinx was involved in the battle of Kamino and the stress of watching his home burn and his buddies die caused him to suffer dissociative amnesia.
>>
Let's actually end the thread for tonight, I can think of how these interviews will go down.

You will interview Old Man first and then Cardinal. Would you like to directly ask every question during the conversations, or would you like to write up a list of questions that you will ask both?

The former would result in a lot of shorter updates but more participation/interaction with each character. The latter would be a larger update, or perhaps two depending, that gives a quicker, more generalized view of the character.

Oh and thread will be tomorrow, same time. I like doing back threads, filling up these threads just feels right.

The thing about Jackpot so far, if you haven't noticed, is that every time you have encountered him in person he was the one who found you. Not the other way around.

Keep that in mind.

How torn up would everyone be? You do not want to see Crusader angry drunk.

>>44702286
Theres the generic Republic rifles, carbines, pistols, the basic stuff you see in TCW.

Someone asked if you could get a DC-17. The answer is probably, but you would have to go through Twitch.

Through Twitch you could get your hands on any blaster in the galaxy, you just have to ask.

As well as avoiding trouble from your superiors for wielding a potentially illegal weapon.

>>44702302
A glorious charge. I am proud.

Yes, we don't discriminate and having another engineer with us just in case our luck goes to shit (again) would be handy plus we'll probably need another gunner for when we bolt on a missile turret.

As for personal weapons, I suggest something along the lines of an SMG.

>>44703045
Exactly, and as of right now there are no troopers that are operating the TX-130.

Your TX-130 has the top turret laser, making the crew you need to pilot it effectively numbering 3 in total, 2 at minimum.

The Saber tank was very shoddily thrown together at the end of last battle, so it is currently being torn back down so to be repaired properly. Normally it would have been scrapped and replaced with a new one, but, well, you currently do not have a new one.

Just a lot of wreckage and immobile vehicles.

If you would like to ask who you are interviewing if they had experience with the TX-130, you could.

So we can pick some to man the TX-130 also?

>>44703265
Yes.
At the moment you are focusing on the left rear gunner position for the AT-TE. After you fill that position, you could theoretically "hire" the rest on the pilot the TX-130.

Though I would suggest you look for people with experience in the Saber tank in particular. It is a little different than an AT-TE. Just a tad.

"Well," You pick up your helmet sitting on the hovercart beside you. "Let's find this Old Man so I can talk with him."

"Is he who you wish to join our crew?" Jackpot asks.

"I am considering between him and Cardinal at the moment." You place the helmet on your head as you stand up, the familiar sound of the suit sealing itself up providing a comfort you were unaware you did not have beforehand. As you attach the tubes to your mask, the rest of your crew stands up.

"The rookie wants either another shiny, or an old tricky soldier who has never fought a day in his life." Twitch grumbles. As Crusader tries and fails to stand up next to him, Twitch sighs loudly. "Alright you brute, give me a moment, I'll get you up."

As Twitch kneels down, wrapping Crusader's arm around his soldier, Phi speaks up. "Maybe you should take Mando to our room. He's blasted himself all the hell with the drink and I doubt we should leave him to wander about with his sword, you know?" Phi lifts a hand in a half shrug. "You know what happened the last time we left him alone like this."

"Don't remind me." Twitch grunts as he lugs Crusader up to a half standing position. "I had to pay the police off, and the price had skyrocketed. This oaf owes me 2,000 credits for that little stunt." He points his head at Xtreme as he pivots towards the door. "Little help, nutjob?"

"Sure." Xtreme steps in to open the door, but right before he does so he asks, "Wait, wasn't that back when Kenobi was helping root out corruption on one of the worlds a few campaigns back? I thought he was successful, him and Skywalker?"

"Exactly, X." Twitch glares at him. "That's why the price had tripled. Now hurry up and let me out before Mando crushes me with his 'vigor of Mandalore' or some nonsense."

Xtreme shrugs and opens the door, helping carry Crusader through the narrow door frame.

Jackpot turns to you. "Lieutenant," He says. "I would suggest that you allow one of us to join you in the interviewing process. The choice is yours, of course."

"Of course, Jackpot." You say as Twitch half drags a mumbling Crusader away. "Lead me to the Old Man, and from there we will decide what to do."

"Follow me, then." Jackpot performs a sharp pivot on his heel before marching out of the room. Xtreme looks over at Phi as you turn to follow, the latter responding with a vague shrug. The three of you exit the room behind Jackpot.

--

"You said he would be here, Jackpot." Phi teases as he sits on the edge of the top platform of an AT-OT. The four of you are in a newly constructed hanger bay filled with AT-OTs with dozens of both clones and local troops walking around, carrying boxes, unloading materials, and performing repairs. This must be the logistics battalion, you decide.

"This is the AT-OT we agreed to meet on." Jackpot states. The walker you are standing on has already been successfully unloaded and is sitting ignored at the end of the line of AT-OTs.

"So, wait," Xtreme calls out as he lounges on a line of seats, legs flung up onto the headrests and arms behind his head. "Jackpot the superspy has been caught unawares by a defective clone?"

"That is not the case." Jackpot walks again into the piloting compartment.

"Mhmm." Xtreme holds a hand out towards Phi's general direction. "I think I will accept my credits now."

"Ah, but wait Xtreme." Phi is looking down over the edge of the walker. "I see a familiar tuff of grey hair approaching."

Xtreme shoots up, stumbling from a sitting position to walking over to Phi, catching his off balanced movement with his hands as he follows Phi's gaze. "You have got to be kidding me." Xtreme grumbles. Phi holds out a hand in front of his helmet, which Xtreme bats away. "I'll get you your money, I just don't have it on me."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44713423
"Oh, so now you're the one who is backing out on his debts?" Phi proclaims dramatically, stepping back from Xtreme and placing a hand on his chest. "I am appalled by your conduct, good sir! You are no gentleman, no!" Phi points at Xtreme who is still standing draped over the edge of the AT-OT, his posture tired as he looks over at Phi. "No, X, you are a scoundrel and a thief!"

"I'm the scoundrel?" Xtreme lets out a sharp chuckle. "Says the 'gentleman'" - He uses air quotes here. - "Who leaves dozens of royal ladies pining for him in their beds as he leaves system."

"I always provide them with worthwhile entertainment."

"Does 'providing entertainment' entail getting chased off world by a legion of a Lord's personal guard?"

Phi takes half a step back, his dramatic facade cracking. "That was only a misunderstandi-"

"Or the time you 'entertained' a Sith assassin?"

"Hey, I stopped her from carrying out her mission that nigh-"

"Or how about the one on Naboo?"

Phi falls silent. He turns away from Xtreme, who is chuckling to himself. "You are much more of a scoundrel than I, Phi."

After another minute of silence, you hear the sound of boots climbing up onto the AT-OT. Up from the side of the walker walks up a clone in Mark 1 armor that is adorned with a series of small symbols painted onto his chest plate with a plain black paint. On his helmet held at his side you see an intricate design of blue, red, and black that makes it look as if it was fractured and broken.

"You have arrived, Corporal." Jackpot says

"Aye kiddo, it's me." As you get a good look at him you immediately see why he is called Old Man. His face is extremely wrinkled, and while his hair is cut to regulation length it is as white as his polished armor. He also has a small goatee that is primly trimmed.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44713459
"Hello, Old Man." Xtreme straightens and turns around from his perch on the side of the walker, leaning back on the side of a seat as he faces the clone. He crosses his arms and says, "It's been a long while since we've met."

"Ah, Xy!" Old Man calls out as he extends his arms out almost as if to give him a hug. You can see Xtreme recoil slightly at the name. "Long time no see! I had thought the war had gotten to you, and you, Phi. I heard what happened to you in the last battle, close call that one."

Before Xtreme can continue talking, the clone turns towards you and Jackpot. "Nice to see you again, Jackpot, I hope you don't have any exciting missions for me like transporting those Twi'leks!" As he laughs, you can see the mild strain in his expression, the harsh lilt that comes out at the end. "And you, Lieutenant, the new commander of these motley bunch of kids. It is quite nice to meet you."

The clone gives you a sharp salute.

Xtreme clears his throat. Old Man hesitates before turning his attention to the yellow X covered clone. "Yes, Xy?"

"You know how much you owe me, you old coot." Xtreme holds out a hand. "I would prefer it if you paid up."

"Ah, you see Xy," The clone rubs the back of his head and gives him a large smile. "I'll get you your money, I just don't have it on me."

Phi breaks out into laughter at that, pounding a fist on Xtreme's shoulder. X stands rigid, unmoving.

Old man promptly turns back to you and Jackpot. "I assume you have some questions you want to ask me?"

You share a look with Jackpot. It seems like you have command.

Group interrogation, and "What can you provide to our business of war?"

Writing.
>>
"Tell me," You step forward, assuming the stance on an officer observing a line of troopers during an inspection. As you thought, Old Man immediately formalizes his standing at attention. "I understand that you asked to become a part of this unit."

"Yes sir." Is his prompt response.

"I would like for you to explain to me what you can provide to the unit. From what I understand, you have never directly engaged the enemy." You watch as the clone's expression forms a harsh edge at your words. His stance becomes too rigid.

When he speaks, his tone is short. "I have been a pilot for the AT-OT for 13 months. On Kamino, I trained to operate all functions of an AT-TE except for the commander position, and performed admirably in all tests. That is in my records, you can examine them if you wish. I assume Jackpot has access to them."

You look over at Jackpot who is already opening up something on his datapad. "One moment Lieutenant."

"So, Old Man," Xtreme says quietly. "I heard you swindled Twitch out of a large sum of money on Coruscant. I'm curious, How'd you do it?"

You act as if you are paying full attention to the datapad in Jackpot's hands. As he accessed Kamino's records, you keep a close ear to Old Man's response with your enhanced sensors.

"Oh, you know Xtreme." You can hear the smug expression on his face as he whispers back. "An old fool like me has to keep his secrets."

"Ah come'on, we're friends. Just give me a little hint." You hear Xtreme take a step towards Old Man as he talks. "I've been meaning to pull one over Twitch for a long while now. Help a brother out."

There is a pause. In that time you read over the reports on Old Man, though Jackpot continues to act as if he were searching. You keep your head down for now.

"Well, I can't say no to pulling the bantha wool over Twitch's eyes again, even indirectly." Old man whispers. "Remember the Senator who was in hiding for one reason or another while we were all in that house on Coruscant?"

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44714933
"The blonde?" Xtreme asks.

"Yes, her. The princess turned Senator, anyway, I made a deal with her after a night of banned wine. A loan, if you will, from her personal wealth to fund a project we agreed should be done. She was quite the socially minded fellow, always opining about the woe of the poor. I gave her something to spend her credits on."

"And Twitch?" You can hear the smile in Xtreme's voice.

"I told her that he was my superior officer in this project and that all repayments should be forwarded through him. Then I took the money and ran far off world."

Xtreme busts up laughing. You have heard enough. Taking the datapad away from Jackpot, you turn back towards the clone. At your swift movement he gives a small guilty jump, which you purposely ignore.

"According to these records, you performed at acceptable levels at all positions, though exemplar in none. There were no reports of misconduct with any of your fellow troopers. The only issue that your instructors seemed to have has was your unfortunate accelerated aging." You can see a flitter of bitterness and disgust pass across his face. "Your instructors stated that, and I quote, "CT-6/8031 is likely to have an increased slowdown of reflexes, thus making him combat ineffective over an extended campaign.""

You let that settle in the air for a moment.

"So tell me Corporal, why should I allow you to fight if your instructors deemed that you were best suited for the role you are currently in?"

Old man turns to look at you, staring into your eyes even through your helmet. His eyes are flinty as he speaks. "I am a soldier, just as you are, Lieutenant. I was bred to fight. I have seen too many brothers die when I was stuck in my transport, running away from the fighting with nothing but supplies."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44714953
"That was your role." Jackpot states. "As a soldier of the Republic, it is your duty to follow through with your appointed role unt-"

"I am aware of that, Jackpot." Anger and desperation collide and peak through the rigid mask of attention Old Man had crafted for himself. "It's just that, I can still do fine work for the Republic. I have been doing my duty without complaint, but now I have been informed that I am being relieved from duty."

You do not know how to respond. It is Phi who speaks up. "Why?"

"They say my age has degenerated my abilities too much in my last combat review." Bitterness seeps into Old Man's tone. "If I hadn't been stuck in my walker for months straight, I would have passed that test no problem. They say that I am unfit to command a vehicle, and unless I am transferred to another unit, I will be retired and sent back to Kamino as a trainer. Problem is, no one is going to accept an old clone like me into their fold."

Old Man gives a sigh before going silent.

To explain the "verdict" choice, because I realized they may be confusing:

The first one means you are adopting him into your crew.

The second one means you are rejecting him completely.

The third one means you are debating adding him to the crew/your company to some capacity. (This allows you to interview Cardinal.)

Sorry if there was any confusion.

You can also ask about TX-130 skills, if you would like for him to go down that route.

Ask him if he spent any time training on a TX-130 and how familiar with the machine? Noting that while you plan on filling your AT-TE first, we are acting company commander and have other units to man as well.

Ask your crew if they have any questions or concerns, focusing more on input from Jackpot and Phi (the more stable members of your crew).

This soldier is trying to appeal to your compassion. He is painting himself as a victim who has been wronged by the army, an old clone trying to get one last hurrah in battle before his time is up.

There others may have been moved by his plight, all you see is soldier who is being unprofessional, and likely trying to manipulate you. Disregarding the story about the Senator, Old Man has succeeded in painting a bad first impression of him in your eyes.

Still though, perhaps he can still be of use.

"We have several highly qualified candidates also under review at this moment. Drop the sob story. Why should I choose you over them?" As you finish speaking, you see Old Man's defeated posture straighten back out to that of a proper soldier. You had not noticed he had began to slump and look as a person in need of your pity. He is a tricky clone, you will give him that.

"Sir, I have a specialty of procuring and coordinating logistics, both from Republic and allied sources. I have been carting supplies for almost this entire war, so I know nearly every AT-OT driver planetside. It may not be fast, but they are always reliable." As Old Man says "reliable," Xtreme scoffs.

Xtreme shakes his head before saying, "Sure, as if you have superior access to supplies than Twitch's marketplace."

"Where Twitch can get anything from across the galaxy to the planet you kiddos are on," Old Man says. "I can get my boys to deliver what you need close to the front lines."

Phi waves his hand around vaguely in Old Man's direction. "So why do you want to be a part of our crew, then? If your specialty is delivering supplies?"

"I have to be where the action is to know where to have my AT-OTs deliver." Old Man again is sounding a little smug, though definitely prideful.

At this you speak up again. "Wait, YOUR AT-OTs? You do not have a command, Corporal."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44716231
His smug demeanor is immediately tossed aside as the Old Man hesitates. "Well, you see kiddo, I have connects all throughout this battalion. I know every pilot, and I've stuck my neck out for them too. They trust me, and I trust them, and because of that we've been one of the most effective logistics force in this whole war."

You glance over to Jackpot, who nods. "What he says is true, Lieutenant. The 56th Logistics Battalion has been a staple support force for the majority of this war. They have resupplied our front on many occasions."

"Yeah, Old Man's boys are soldiers alright, even if they never directly fight." Phi chimes in. "Once, when the Doubles and our armored company were surrounded trying to provide support to a village on the Twi'lek home world, it was an AT-OT driver who somehow sneaked up to the Separatists and coordinated the delivery of supplies and reinforcements through their lines."

"Aye kiddo that was me." Old Man smiles.

"Impressive." Is Phi's response.

"Next question, Corporal." You may not want him in your AT-TE, but Old Man may provide valuable support. The veterans always complained about how supplies were hard to come by on the front lines, and while your AT-TE is unlikely to run out of ammunition or fuel for a long while, if you are coordinating with Bandit's forces you may need to be able to replenish their stocks.

"What experience do you have with TX-130s?"

"Oh, Saber tanks?" Old Man perks up at the designation. "I love those things. I piloted one of them with some clone troopers back on Felucia after my AT-OT was disabled. I was able to get it out in one piece and assisted in covering the evacuation."

"Well, no sir. I do not count dodging blaster fire as being in combat. My Saber baby was severely damaged, but we were able to get her running and mostly played distraction for the rest of our brothers. No weapons were working, of course, so I basically was still acting as a "Transport and Logistics" trooper, just in a different vehicle."

"I remember the hellhole that Felucia was for vehicles, Lieutenant." Phi states. "If we can verify Old Man's story, then I am willing to believe that he would be a fine addition. What do you think, Jackpot?"

"I will do the required research." He responds immediately.

"You know Old Man, you are always full of surprises." Xtreme pats a hand on his shoulder. "Driving a Saber on Felucia? Didn't you hear the stories of how much the wildlife loved to munch on those as snacks?"

The Corporal gives a small chuckle. "I outran quite a few Rancors in my time there, trust me I know. Jackpot, if you need confirmation of my time on Felucia, I only ask that you talk to General Kenobi himself." He always finds a way to be smug, though not disrespectfully so.

"As I said, I will do the required research after we are finished discussing." Jackpot says.

Also, it seemed like you guys before were not interested in Deadeye and Gravedigger before to replace the rear gunner.

Both Deadeye and Gravedigger are risk takers.

I actually very much liked the idea of using Gravedigger somehow, strong combat effectiveness and tactical knowledge as well as a sea of connections throughout the republic forces and elsewhere. Again not sure weather we want him in the gunner spot, where he could advise us quickly, or give hive command of the tank where he can provide effective support.

But yeah, not crazy about Deadeye despite his skill, but Gravedigger I really think we should make use of.

>>44717580
I'm sorry. Old Man just sounds way too good to be true. Has tons of connections, has hours and hours on both vehicles we just so happen to have, but no actual battle experience to back him up?

Meanwhile his evals say his response times are diminishing to unacceptable levels. Remember that. He can hook us up, certainly, but is he worth it in the long run?
>>
>>44717503
>>44717580
Something to think about concerning Gravedigger:

He was once the commander of the old Commander's fellow AT-TE in their platoon together before Felucia.

Generally, Privates are not made into commanders of walkers in the Grand Army of the Republic.

Nor pilots of V-Wings.

Food for thought.
>>
>>44717580

>>
I think Old Man should go on the 130, and then what happens with Cardinal depends on the interview.

I don't think we should do anything with Deadeye because abrasive personalities are a problem everywhere, and problems are no good.

Gravedigger seems like a trap choice and should be avoided
>>
>>44718212
No. It's a clone army. Plus you don't bring women on ships...Or tanks.

Gravedigger might be too good for rear gun position.

Give it to the shiny if he isn't noticeably crazy. Then wack Gravedigger and Old man in the TX or whatever.

"Corporal." You motion to Jackpot. "Jackpot will contact you concerning my decision in the future. Thank you for your time. You are free to return to duty."

Old Man salutes you crisply. As you return your salute, he says, "Thank you for considering me, Lieutenant. You will not regret my assistance in the future. Now, if you do not mind, I need to perform an inspection of my AT-OT. The one currently beneath your feet, kiddos."

"Right, we shall get out of your way Corporal." As you and your crew members dismount the walker transport, you say to Jackpot, "Take us to Cardinal now, if you know where he is."

"Of course, Lieutenant." Jackpot states distractedly. "Though, if you do not mind, I request that I be allowed to discuss with the General."

"About his story of Felucia, correct?"

Jackpot nods.

"What," Xtreme says, dodging around busy engineers. "Can you not collaborate his story yourself, Jacky?"

"There is no record that Corporal CT-6/8031 performed such actions on Felucia, nor have I heard any such story from other members of the army. Although, it is entire possible that every other clone who participated in or witnessed this event has died since then."

Jackpot looks to you. "I shall stay for the interview with Cardinal if you insist. Afterwards, I must go speak to the General."

Xtreme and Phi share a look. "You know Jackpot," The latter says. "You have always been the morbid sort, but lately you've been, I don't know."

He looks to Xtreme for assistance, and after an elbow jab to the side he speaks up. "Oh, right, you seem all the more distant lately. I haven't seen you in the barracks since we hit planetside."

"I have been performing my duty." Jackpot says. Despite continued pestering from Xtreme, he remains silent for the rest of your walk as you leave the hanger and enter the pouring rain.

You are glad you have your armor on now.

"He is in here." Jackpot says, opening one of the many wooden doors in the castle. Inside you see rows of bunk beds filled with troopers half way in, or out of, Mark 1 armor. This must be the enlisted barracks, you decide.

The troopers are generally all talking with each other, and a general feeling of excitement fills the air. These must be the new batch of rookies who arrived on Jabiim today.

As the four of you file into the room, a Master Sergeant spots you in particular and calls out over the din of the room, "Officer on deck!" Immediately troopers stop what they were doing, many halting mid word to stand at attention and face towards you. The soldiers all carry out identical, perfectly timed salutes.

You are taken aback at the sheer respect the troopers all are showing for you. They are all standing perfectly still, and as you scan the room not a single one looks to be grumbling or unhappy with the situation.

You hear Xtreme whisper behind you. "Looks like Jinx has a fanclub."

Instead of deigning the comment with a response, you salute back at the room of your brothers. "At ease. Master Sergeant, I require an audience with a Private Cardinal."

A clone without armor steps forward. "That would be I, Lieutenant."

The Master Sergeant gives you a curt nod. "Understood, Lieutenant."

As Cardinal walks to you, the rest of the room stands stock still. Only after the five of you exit the room do you hear activity begin once again, though it is only the sound of movement rather than conversation.

You move a few doors down, walking into an abandoned sitting room filled with decrepit furniture, sagging bookcases vomiting books onto the floor that are more dust than paper, and webs from the local insects. The room is also pitch black except for the light from the hallway, so as Jackpot moves to find a light source, Cardinal turns to you.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44718992
"Lieutenant," He says. You can see the excitement practically radiate off of his body, and he is having trouble keeping his voice controlled. "It is such an honor to finally meet you. We heard stories about you back home, and just earlier today I heard about how you led the defense against 4 whole droid battalions!"

A small lamp turns on in the center of the room, casting sharp shadows across the walls and the floorboards. The activation of the light gives you a reason to step away from Cardinal, who had moved very close to you while talking, and move across the room.

One of the chairs was in decent enough condition, so as Cardinal moves to follow you, you point to the chair. "Have a seat, Private. Get comfortable."

Back at the door, Xtreme and Phi are standing in dramatic poses on either side looking almost like sentries. Jackpot stands next to the lamp, looking to you.

Cardinal begins to talk again. "What do you need be for Lieutenant? I heard that you got a promotion recently as well, after your first battle no less! Also, did you really talk to General Kenobi?" Cardinal is sitting literally at the edge of his chair, hands resting on his knees as he leans towards you.

You nod to him, raising a hand before he can go off onto another spree of questions. "While that is all true, that is not what I am here to discuss with you about."

"Oh? What is it?" You can see the anticipation and the awe at you in his eyes.

Reflected against his eyes, you see your helmet with shadows looking as if they are being birthed from your viewports.

You find yourself averting your eyes from the image.

Stay Professional.

"You are dismissed, Jackpot, though if possible, look for troopers to man the TX-130." You say. Jackpot turns and leaves while Cardinal maintains his rapt attention on you. Xtreme and Phi behind him are lounging on the walls now, watching you with what you assume to be smiles plastered on their faces.

You do not send them out, though a part of you wants to. They are your crew, after all. There is nothing wrong with them knowing about your time on Kamino, which this trooper is likely to bring up.

You seriously hope he does not.

"I have a few questions-"

"Anything you need Lieutenant, I am happy to provide." He says immediately as you pause to move on to your next thought. He is prompt, if nothing else.

"Right, that is good to hear, now if you allow me to ask these questions in full?" You find yourself having to talk quickly to cut off Cardinal from forming a response. At this you pause for a moment and look at him. He nods in response. Good, it looks like he will actually allow you to speak.

Behind him Xtreme gives you a bombastic salute. You ignore him.

"Good, now, Private, what is your role in your squadron?"

"Oh, I do not currently have a squad of my own, Lieutenant."

You blink, forming your face into an unseen grimace. "I am sorry, but what Private? Why is that the case?"

"I was sent here as a replacement rear gunner for a Lieutenant Sparks." He is smiling at you. Not a large, overly creepy smile, but a subtle one that you cannot unsee. You doubt he is even aware of it, but still it disconcerts you.

You take a focusing breath to yourself. Why is this trooper getting between your armored platings? Stay Professional, and just get through the questions.

"I assume that means you have experience in the AT-TE?"

"Born and bred to fight in it, sir."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44720579
"I am sorry, can you please explain?"

"Since I was born I was meant to be the rear gunner for an AT-TE, protecting the embodiments of the Republic on the battlefield."

"Okay, so you underwent training. How did you fare?"

"No one was better than I. I was born for it, they were not."

"How were you in basic combat training?"

"Irrelevant, I was meant to be the rear gunner of an AT-TE. It is my duty and I have trained all my life to follow through with it."

At this Phi and Xtreme share a look. You hesitate before continuing on.

"Understood, well, uhm, have you had any experience with piloting or operating the weapon systems of a TX-130?"

Cardinal's face drops into a cold gaze. "Are you implying that I have ever been affiliated with those thinly armored piles of scrap? Tarnishing my reputation as a heavy walker gunner?"

You are at a complete loss for words. You look to Phi for help, and he tenatively takes a step forward. "Cardinal," He says. The trooper does not turn away from you. After clearing his throat, Phi walks around to in front of the trooper and tries again. "Private Cardinal." He has the trooper's attention. "How are your skills as a gunner?"

"Oh, I have performed perfectly in all simms, exams, and texts required to be a rear gunner of the AT-TE." At his words, you remember him now. What he is saying is true, this Private is the only trooper in all of the Grand Army to perform perfectly in any role.

He just happened to have perfected shooting a rear laser cannon. When he was tested for any other role in any other branch, he failed abysmally. For whatever reason, this trooper is not all that versatile, and his personality seems more bland than usual for a brother fresh from Kamino.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44720600
You catch yourself. You are a soldier fresh from Kamino. What right do you have to say that you have more personality that he does? Then again, you have faced combat. Perhaps you were like this trooper before? Such a thought seems entirely foreign to you, but then again, what do you know?

"Tell me, shiny." Xtreme saunters over to Cardinal and rests a hand on his head, ruffling his regulation length hair. "Why were you in the enlisted barracks rather than the vehicle crew barracks?"

He looks up at X, confused. "What do you mean? There are different barracks? There is where I was told to report when I arrived."

"Were you attached to that unit?" Phi asks, concern bleeding into his voice.

"I was told that I was to be with that platoon until a spot opened up in the new Thunderbolt for me to join."

"Uhm, shiny, what do you mean?" Xtreme's cool confidence is shaken at this point.

"Exactly what I said. The new Thunderbolt had not arrived yet, so I was to assist 6th Platoon in their duties." Phi and Xtreme look at each other before looking at you.

A private comm channel opens up in your helmet.

"Something feels off here, Lieutenant." Phi begins.

"Yeah, I think someone higher up transferred the shiny to that platoon, probably after the battle at Jaxx."

"What do you think that means?" You ask.

"I think," Phi hesitates. "I think someone in command thought Cardinal was a defect. Do you know what this squad is assigned to do, Xtreme?"

"Yeah." X sighs. "6th Platoon? They are moving out to clear minefields a few hundred clicks east of here with some Jabiimi forces."

You look at Xtreme. "How do you know this?"

"The Master Sergeant? He was in the rec room earlier and we got to talking about it. He also said that they were waiting on mine detectors to arrive, though he had been promised that the Jabiimi had some for them to use. It didn't strike me as odd until now."

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44720625
"Was there anything else weird about that platoon?" Phi crosses his arms.

Cardinal is looking between the three of you, waiting quietly.

"What, other than the fact that they all seemed to revere the Lieutenant?"

"We saw something like that on Geonosis the first time around."

Xtreme shakes his head. "You're right. Also, the Sergeant seemed a little lighter in the head when I talked to him before, if you catch my drift."

"Not entirely there?"

"Yeah, no."

“It could mean nothing though. Cardinal here doesn’t seem all that defective. Overly zealous and focused, perhaps, but not like those mindless maniacs on Geonosis.”

You look between the two. "I am sorry, what do you mean?"

Phi shrugs. "I think command has formed a platoon to send on a dangerous mission."

"And looking at this, it's likely one they aren't meant to return from."

“It’s not entirely unfounded though, perhaps the Loyalists just asked for reinforcements for that front?” Phi offers.

“I don’t know,” Xtreme says. “It feels odd to only send a single platoon.”

“Our forces are stretched out thin as it is, Xtreme.”

Phi and Xtreme trail off in thought. Cardinal continues to wait patiently, though he is beginning to look annoyed.

Or we can start a new thread at some point, maybe in an update or two, so that we can use that thread for tomorrow's run.

Whichever is fine with me, I'm just enjoying writing.

Which I will get back to doing now.

If you're running tomorrow it'd probably be better to start a new thread once we resolve this scene.
>>
>>44721833
Ride it down into the abyss!

If you're running tomorrow then second option fits better

"What? Defects? No, that's impossible." You say. "There were no defects in my batch. I would have been made aware of them."

"Lieutenant," Phi says gently. "Maybe we shouldn't have this conversation with the Private right here?"

Cardinal is twiddling his thumbs, looking extremely uncomfortable at your obvious yet unheard conversation.

You take a moment to center yourself, containing the indignant anger that is growing in your chest. After a breath, you speak. "Private, thank you for answering my questions. I will be in contact with you soon."

"All right Lieutenant, thank you for taking the time to listen to me!" He bolts upright, giving you another salute. "Though please be quick Lieutenant, 6th Platoon is shipping out and the Master Sergeant wants me to be with them! Oh, oh, and once we talk again, can you tell me the story of your battles? I want to hear them from you!"

You hold your hands out in front of you in a desperate plea for Cardinal to slow down. "All right Private, slow down. We will talk later, okay? I need to confer with my crew right now."

"Ah yes!" He claps his hands together. "I'll be waiting Lieutenant!" Cardinal practically vibrates as an ecstatic excitement propels him out of the room.

As the door creaks to a close behind him, Xtreme puts a hand on his hip and says, "I like him Lieutenant. At the very least, he will provide some commentary from the back the walker. Didn't you always find it odd out Big and Jackpot were always so quiet back there?"

Phi lounges into the chair that Cardinal had just left. "I talked to Twitch about it once, actually. Supposedly, Jackpot and Big were "telepathic," and they were able to communicate through the smallest of nonverbal gestures. Twitch being Twitch as always, you know how it is."

"You know, sometimes I think he has fallen completely off his rocker." Xtreme shrugs. Phi just looks at him; his expressionless helmet conveys a plethora of thoughts and emotions at the slight tilt of his neck.

"Phi, Xtreme." You seethe. "What exactly were you talking about? Are you implying that command was just sending those clones off to their death? And what are these maniacs you were talking about?"

"Ah, I guess those back on Kamino did not want to talk about those bloodthristy, ultraviolent, remorseless savages." Xtreme says as if he were discussing the weather for the next day.

"I heard that their conduct was complete scrubbed from the records." Phi says. "And, if Twitch were here Lieutenant, then he would insist that the Republic were out to kill us all."

"Really now?" Xtreme shrugs. "Well, the maniacs were a squad od clones back on Geonosis during the first wave, a bad batch of clones, real psychos. They were effective fighters, though bloody as all hell. They massacred an entire hive on their own, and when the Jedi try to corral them back in, they ran."

"They took a ship, I heard." Phi offers. "At least, no one reported them when we went back to that useless planet."

"So who knows?" Xtreme says. "They may still be out there, fighting everything in sight. Not us though, at least. To be honest Lieutenant, they are most likely just a rumor."

Phi shakes his head. "No, I heard it from one of the Padawans. She told me after the battle happened, of course, and she didn't go into the details?"

"Which one was that?"

"The Twi'lek."

"The one with the tattoo on her neck, right?"

"Yep, that's the one."

"You lucky dog. I always thought she had it in for the Commander, but he never even reacted to her. How did you get that?"

You have had enough. "You are not answering my question." Hot rages blisters from your words. Your fists scrunch up into Dealers of Pain, prepared to slam into the faces of your mouthy subordinates. "Are our brothers being sent to their deaths by our leaders?"

> [Cont.]
>>
>>44722548
Phi hesitates. "Well, not exactly. The troopers aren't being sent into battle without blasters, if that's what you mean, just, with how off Cardinal was acting, Xtreme and I were just spitballing crazy ideas."

"Yeah." Xtreme says lamely.

Stay. Professional.

You let your anger ooze off of you, breathing to maintain your cool. Assaulting your crew is entirely unprofessional.

"No death of our brothers in this war should be treated as a joke or as some 'crazy theory.'" You begin. "I will never treat any of you, or anyone else in my command as, as, like a marching line of droids. Is that what will happen to 6th Platoon? Will they be marched into mines so that the damned Loyalists can walk over their corpses?"

"Lieutenant," Phi stands up. "Sir, will you please calm down?"

Your vision is turning red.

Your brothers, being sent out to die for rebel filth? This cannot stand.

You will not let this stand.

Good, good. Hate the rebels. Despise the Jedi.

Hey, remember what happened on Geonosis? Where the finest army the galaxy has ever seen got ordered to stand in a line and march slowly towards the enemy, through oncoming blaster and heavy weapons fire?

Maybe we could get someone to reprogram droid lower halfs (think waist down) and run them into the mines remotely?
>>
Everybody have the Righteous tirade prepared about us being more than clones, And each unique human beings. Sent to die in a war we have no real stake in? By the jedi and other masses
>>
>>44722817
Actually, that's not a bad idea. B1 legs by the company should be easy to procure.
>>
Plus, can we get Gravedigger? Not as a rear gunner, but as a Bad Ass support guy who runs crazy hit and run attacks against the Seps?
>>
Next post will be in a new thread. Feel free to conjure up some write ins, perhaps in the vein of >>44722819 if you want.
Dialogue and whatnot is greatly appreciated, or simple bullet points to hit in the upcoming rant.

>>44722922
If you want to talk to him, feel free to do so. If you can't find Jackpot, Bandit or Twitch will likely know where he is.
>>
>>44722964
General Kinobi, do you believe your life has meaning? Yes? I thought so, you choose it yourself and pursue it. I and my brothers we are born with ours, like you we pursue it whole heartedly. We here in this regard are the same.

But general what would you do if you discovered a number of your brothers were to be sent into a suicide mission? Their lives wasted, their purpose denied, would you stand for it.
>>
>>44722964
How many fucking clones died in Geonosis?
Why are the Jedi in charge when they've got no formal military training what-so-ever?
What planet are we even on? Why didn't anybody tell us?
What the heck is the galaxy going to do with six gorillion clones once the war ends?
>>
>>44722964
+We are all clones of one person but different people entirely

+Do the deaths of every trooper under kenobis command not effect him? we can see in his eyes that they do not

+Respect for the chain of command being the only thing stopping us taking a swing at the general

+The republic and general views us as less than human we aren't paid, get no retirement cannot marry, and the only future any clone has to lookforward to after the war is watching their brothers die of old age.
>>
>>44723205
I do like these points especially about how the republic views clones as expendable pseudo droids. and you know slaves kenobi should see the issue with that.

>>44723121
That i like too

Whatever we do remain calm

Every Clone is sacred,
Every Clone is good,
If a Clone is wasted,
