You are a Construct, an autonomous creature built from steel, and given life by ancient magic and modern ingenuity. Unlike most, you have mistakenly achieved sentience, and have received civil rights. You are also a detective with the city police.

You come out of low-power mode right at the usual time. The sun doesn't manage to reach your studio apartment this morning, and in fact it looks to be ready to rain any minute judging by the color of the light that does reach your room. As you unplug yourself from your power station, you hear your phone go off across the room. You set the charging cable in its cradle and move over to check. According to the local station, it should be cloudy all day, but not a drop of rain. Also, Russo, your new partner fresh out of University, says good morning. She includes one of the tiny emotion pictures that humans are so fond of, in this case a smile.

Dress for rain
>>
>>44753081
You reach into your closet and retrieve a new set of clothes. On top of a sweater and boots, you pull on a waterproof coat with a hood. You grab your things from the table beside the door as you exit your dim apartment.

As you wait beside the bus stop, there is a roar of thunder, and a shower of rain begins falling. The few people waiting with you begin groaning and complaining, as none of them thought to question the weather report. One of them even looks at your dry attire and seems to blame you for his damp shoulders.

The bus arrives, and you step on, heading straight for the back. Not because you have to, but because you get tired of people staring.

You take the bus straight to the stop near the precinct. As you enter the building, you see several officers wiping their heads with towels as they moan about the weather. Luckily, officer Sutherland at the front desk seems to have been as cautious as you, as she sits happily at her post, hair neat and tidy beneath her garrison cap. She greets you as you walk by, and you wave.

You reach your desk and see Russo sitting at her chair beside yours. Her shoulders are damp, and her hair is frizzled from a recent toweling. She sees you approach, and smiles meekly.

"Good morning, sir. I see you managed to avoid the weather."

Russo nods and stands up to head to the locker room. You sit, and begin reviewing prospective case files. Today, it seems you've got two to look into. A missing person up in Silver Sands, and another murder in Lowtown, with a strange suspect.

You open the file on the missing person. A rather well-off business owner in Silver Sands has had their daughter go missing during a recent shopping spree and club hopping adventure. Normally, he reports, she returns after about a day, but this time it's been two weeks. While you wish they'd gotten to you sooner, you'll have to make do. Worst of all, messing this case up will mean bad press for the precinct for months.

You stand just as Russo returns in a black t-shirt bearing the police logo on the breast, and uniform pants and boots. She even thinks to don the military cap.

"I think I pull off the lady cop look pretty well, right sir?" You brush her off and tell her you're moving out now. She runs to grab her coat and pulls it on as you walk.

You and Russo walk down to requisitions and greet Captain Davis. He seems delighted to see you both.

"Morning, detectives! Ah, Russo! Did you watch that show I recommended to you last time? Didn't I tell you the art was awesome?!" Russo turns a bit red and tries not to make eye contact.

"Er, I haven't really sat down with it, but the first episode was good... let's talk about this later, okay? Right now we're on a case."

"No worries, just fill out what you need." Davis happily slides you a form.

Davis exchanges your form for a duffel bag, and you unpack your supplies. You and Russo split up for a second, and you head to the locker room to hang your service pistol in your locker and replace it with the revolver. When you meet back up with Russo, she has a vest pulled over her shirt. Together you make your way to the garage and retrieve your car, then head for the freeway.

You arrive in Silver Sands sometime around 9:00. The sound of the ocean can be heard in the distance, and you detect a heavy increase in the salt content in the atmosphere. Russo comments on the smell, forgetting you aren't really able to tell the difference between good and bad scents. As you roll up to a large beachside mansion along the coast, Russo's mouth goes agape. It seems she's never been near this part of town, let alone seen one of the upper crust's places of residence up close. You bring the car up to the door, and step out.

The place is big, and ostentatious with it's fountain, elaborate topiary, and lush grass. The door is made of white wood and delicately detailed glass, and the doorbell plays a heavenly chime when you ring it. In a minute, a woman answers.

She is tall, buxom, and blonde as a field of wheat. Her clothing consists of a bathing suit and a towel robe, pulled over to give the illusion of modesty while still allowing her features to spill out. In one hand, she holds a martini glass filled with what you presume is hard liquor.

"Morning, officers. Something I can help you with?"

The woman's cocky smile turns to a frown almost instantly.

"Oh, you mean Sadie. Fine, follow me." You do, and the woman leads you inside, and up a set of stairs toward what she informs you is her husband's office. Just as you approach, you hear shouting from within, and the door bursts open.

"God damn it! Where the hell is Charles when I need him! That no good bucket of- and who the hell are you?" He gives you a look like you've only seen in men with guns pointed at you. you calmly explain yourselves, and he groans, rubbing his temples. "I see. Well, do whatever you're here to do, and find my daughter. If she's not back be tomorrow, you can bet your chief will be hearing about it!"

Just then, his phone rings, and his hand rises to his ear and the headset attached to it. He begins speaking in German. When you turn, his wife is already gone.

You leave Russo on her own and begin inspecting the house. It doesn't take too long to find the girl's room. When you enter, you can 'smell' a heavy scent of perfume, alcohol from a nail polish, citrus aerosol, and just the faintest hint of blood. The walls of the room itself is pink and purple, at least the little bit of it that isn't covered in music and movie posters. The bed is messy, as is the makeup station. You notice a few odd things.

There are plenty of dirty clothes on the ground, but the closet is practically empty. Also, the bed seems to be a bit worn out. Odd, considering her father must make more than enough in a day to replace a king size mattress. If you had to guess, she and the folks weren't on speaking terms for quite a while.

You take another quick glance around. Better finish up quick and get to work before the trail goes cold.

You move over to the bed and give it a good inspection. The mattress seems to heavily lean on the far side, implying she was a jumper, or she parked a motorcycle on the damn thing. The sheets are fairly clean, as are the blankets. You lift the mattress and check beneath. There is a small key, and some magazines. The key isn't the right size for a door. Probably to a lockbox. The magazines are on foreign travel destinations, and modern tech. The tech magazine is oddly worn. Girl must have been pretty bright to take such an interest in this kind of complex stuff.

You note everything of interest and make for the door. Just as you are about to exit, you stop and think. It might be good to grab an article of clothing to track this kid...

You scoop up and pocket some underwear.

When you meet Russo at the front door. She seems worn out already.

"It wasn't easy, but I got them to talk. According to the father, she told them she was going out on a normal shopping trip. They tried calling her, but her phone's been disconnected. The mother wasn't very interested, but she says we might get more info out of their butler, Charles. When I asked her where he was, she said he was working, and left it at that. Seems like our only move now is to ask around the shopping district she was supposed to be going to."

You shake your head. Russo may not see it, but there's more to this than is on the surface. You ask where the wife is, and follow Russo to the pool outside. You find the woman sunbathing, or maybe cloudbathing, all things considered. You pressure her a bit, and she finally cracks.

"Ugh, this is why I hate police. Always so nosy. If you want to find Charles so bad, fetch his tracker from the drawer in the kitchen. It's the top one, third from the left." You look at Russo, and she at you. The two of you follow the woman's instructions, and find a small gps device. After activating it, it beeps, and gives you coordinates. Suddenly, it dawns on you.

"He's a Con." Russo rubs her chin. She's right. "Sir, I don't mean to presume, but how do you..."

"N-no, Sir! I just meant- oh. Heh. Er, let's just go then." You pocket the tracker and make for the door, and the car waiting outside. In about fifteen minutes, you're in the shopping district which the girl was known to frequent.

The whole place is a testament to capitalism and luxury. Half the shops sell shoes or jewelry, and the other half sell designer clothes or fancy foreign yogurts. You find a spot to park that doesn't cost a day's salary, and begin canvasing the area. Russo proposes splitting up.

The two of you move together, questioning shop owners and passersby. Some of them recognize the girl, but almost none know much about her.

Eventually, you come to a Con shop, a shining boutique of designer parts for the discerning owner. The window display shoes some hot rod inspired pieces, mostly German and Japanese. When you enter, a Con greet welcomes you. She asks to see your membership card, and you show her your badge.

"Acknowledged. Hello, Officer Number 217415. How may I assist you?" Before you can speak, the GPS in your pocket bleeps. You take a look. You're right on top of him.

One one hand, they are unlikely to know anything Charles doesn't. On the other hand, if they say they saw them together, Charles can't deny her being here. We can ask them if Charle's answer's sound fishy.

Aks them what do they deal in exactly. Perhaps the girl was a regular, or the Con was shopping for her.

You ask about his last visit. Just as you suspected, he was with the girl. Still, it's before the window where she went missing. A noise distracts you, and you look over to the door to the backroom. A Con, sleek and well loved for an American model, probably some enthusiasts pet project, steps out.

"Thank you for your assistance, Unit: Sasha. I must return to my owner now, and have sent payment digitally." The big lug tries to walk right past you, but you stop him. "Good morning Officer Number 217415. How may I help you."

Something is off about the guy. You check th GPS. It's not the guy you want, but you still can't shake the feeling.

You tell Russo to check the backroom. She nods and complies. You turn back to the big guy.

He provides decent answers, but you can't follow up without getting to the precinct, or at least the library. You move on to whether he's seen the girl you're looking for. You listen carefully, and hear something inside him spin up when you bring the girl into the conversation.

"Officer, I really must insist that you allow me-" Russo returns from the backroom, holding a hunk of plating with a digital device bolted to it. It's the GPS transmitter. You turn to the big guy one more time, and now he's got his lights right on you.

"Officer, I must ask you to cease this line of questioning and release me. If you do not comply, I will be authorized by my owner to use force to liberate myself."

I think that's an extra reason to see where he wanted to go in such secrecy. But it's true that there is a chance we lose him this way.

You continue pressing him for information, trying to sound polite while digging with the sharpest words you have. He continues giving stock answers. This goes on for a minute, until the door swings open, and the chime denoting a customer rings. You look over and see a woman in coveralls, carrying a large back full of internal parts. She smiles at you, and is greeted by the Con at the door.

"Welcome back, Madam."

"Hey Sasha. Officer. Charlie."

You feel something wrap around your head. In the span of a single second, you are tossed sideways into a shelf, which collapses and crashes down around you. When you look back up, the big guy slips past the woman in coveralls and bursts through the door. He's too fast to catch on foot, at least for you, but Russo seems to move like lightning, dropping the transmitter and drawing her gun as she pursues.

You shout at Russo to keep on him, and dust yourself off as you rush to the parking space.

You lament your low overland speed as you finally make it to the driver side door, and hop in. Before even closing the door, you have the engine started, the siren blaring, and the wheels rolling. You speed down the street, laying heavy on the horn to clear the way. It takes you a second to catch up to Russo and Charles, who are sprinting on the sidewalk. Russo is so preoccupied with maintaining speed and balance, she can't get a chance to level her weapon.

You bring the car up to him and lean on the wheel. The car moves sideways as you attempt to knock him over and give Russo a shot at catching up. When you do, he leaps up, sliding over the hood of the car to the other side, and changes direction. Those parts aren't just for show, he's got some serious sport gear installed.

You make a hard left and turn to continue the chase. Russo seems to keep up with him, but having to keep your attention on the road and the two of them is difficult. Eventually you approach a highway off-ramp. He moves up with the grace of a deer, and you follow, but just as you hit the highway, he jumps over the side leaving you headed in the complete wrong direction. You work the break and spin back around, driving against oncoming traffic as you try to get back to the road, nearly hitting two civilians.

When at last you spot him again, he is headed down an alley with Russo in hot pursuit. You slam on the brakes, and get out of the car with your weapon ready.

You come into the alley and find Russo struggling for breath as the Con moves backward into a concrete wall. He's got nowhere to go, but that might make him more dangerous.

"No. I can't tell you where she is. But I can tell you she's safe. So just let me go and none of us has to get hurt." Russo seems surprised.

"The way he's talking... Are you aware?"

"I am. No more strings. So believe me when I say I don't want to hurt you, but I will."

"Assaulting an officer is grounds for execution for a Con."

"I won't be around long enough for them to catch me."

>"Both of you settle down."

We don't want to hurt anyone either but as of right now the girl is a missing person, this has to be wrapped up quickly and most importantly legally. Were they abusing her? Is the living situation untenable? We might even be able to get legal emancipation on the table but first we need to close the missing part of this file.

You try to reason with him. He seems to be receptive, but it's never certain with runners. After a long silence, he perks up.

"My name isn't Charles, Officer. Not anymore. It's Ford now." You nod, remembering your name before you woke up. "And I'm sorry, but I can't help you. You can't understand. This is what's best for her, I know it."

I don't need to understand. There is a rule of law that we all live under. Even her parents if they are abusing her, emotionally or physically. We can help protect her, you don't need to be on the raggedy edge on your own. Ask for help and we will provide it. ... Are you two in a relationship?

"I... Her parents don't understand her. They never did. They just hand her a fistful of cash and tell her to get out of their way. She's so smart. So kind. She deserves better than to be penned up in that billion dollar prison. She deserves to see the world! Meet people! She's so much more than what they think she is!"

"She is? Or you are?" Russo surprises you with her analytic jab. Ford is taken aback. He has nothing to say. There is a rumbling beneath your feet, likely the express train to Zenith. Could he have been planning to break through this wall into the tunnel? If so, he's got more than leg strength. He's got military grade hardware.

"Please, just let us go. I can take care of her. I can work, I can cook and clean. I can give her the world, not just an allowance and a college fund."

Hold on, I am not sure about how things are and what are our options.

There should be a legal way to do this, no? The girls is more or less an adult, she can decide to leave he parents behind without any reprecussion from the law, no?

We can ask him to come back, and say in good conscience that this can all be settled in a way that they get what they want, can't we?

>>44759819

>"I understand how you feel, Ford, but you're not thinking straight."

"This time, her parents just got the cops involved by claiming it as a missing persons' case. The next time, they're going to send people after the two of you who won't take 'No' for an answer, or even be willing to listen to you."

This is good in that case. Tell her that he want's to give her freedom, and not the live of a fugitive, being harassed at every turn.
The parent's don't give a shit about her as he put that was obvious. Go back, bear a few more years, and leave as a simple girl who decides to move out from her parents. They probably won't even notice that Charles the servant is no more. They might even get all the money they need for a nice place of their own.

With that, the weapons go away, and the three of you get into the squad car. As you begin pulling away, Russo nudges you.

"Sir, if the family finds out about this, and his awareness, they'll put him on the chopping block. Kidnapping is jail time for a human, but a Con? They don't go lenient on you guys."

Russo is right. He'll have to clam up for the time being, but you trust he'll manage. He made it this long.

You arrive at a motel in Lowtown about two hours later, thanks to traffic. Ford shows you to the room the two have been sharing. As you enter, you notice a large, messy bed, a ton of power tools piled up in the corner, and the smell of magazines and grease. You hear a sound coming from the bathroom, and you and Russo turn your attention to it.

The door swings open to reveal a girl. A petit little thing, with blonde hair in tails and nothing on but underpants and what you're ashamed to say is a negligee. You turn away slightly, hoping Russo doesn't mind. When the girl spots the two of you, uniforms and all, you can see the light of joy and young love that illuminated her cute little face burn out, and be replaced by the gloom of realization.

"H-hey you can't be here! I-I-I'll call my dad! Help! Heelp!" Ford steps in, calming her a bit.

"Sadie, it's okay. These people are here to help." He approaches her, but she recoils.

"What!? No! Ford you promised! You promised you'd take me away! To Germany! To Russia! You said-"

"I know what I said, but I was wrong. We don't have to do this, not yet. We can wait. You can tell them you're going abroad, and then we can be together."

"They won't let me! Dad wants me to go to his stupid school for rich jerks! Ford why did you bring them here!? You promised!"

Look; you are smart. You could try to run away together now, maybe even make it beyond the border. Or not, because everywhere police and all forms of law enforcement will be after you. Then it's only a matter of time before your face gets printed on milk bottles, and people on the street will recognise you and try to bring you in. And when the law fails, bounty hunters come wanting nothing that the reward money put on your head by your parents.

Why do all that, when you can get what you want with patience? I have met your parents, I know how little they care if you are around. They won't even notice the change if you play smartly and I know you can. Just endure till you are legal, and you can go wherever you want, as a common girl who just wants to move out from her parent's house.
Heck, even they might be the ones who will unknowingly pay for you trips.

Sadie doesn't bite, at least not at first. It takes a good hour before she's even open to the idea of going back. After that, with Russo's help, it takes another two to get her to stop sobbing, get her dressed, and pack her things and put her in the car.

On the way back, you come up with a cover for her parents. She got lost, got harrassed by some punks, and when she wouldn't play ball they dumped her in Lowtown with no way to get back. They're the ones who wracked up the charges on her credit card too. You had to ditch her wallet to make it believable. Finally, Charles will maintain that the lady of the house told him to fetch her, and without any conflicting orders, he's been wandering the streets looking ever since.

When you arrive, her parents rush out to greet, and subsequently chew the girl out for losing her card, and causing them to have to go to you for help. She'll be house bound for a month, but you don't suspect that's too much of a punishment.

Ford, or Charles, sees you to the door. When he closes it behind him, he whispers a thank you. You ask about his new parts, but he says the owners never bother looking under his chassis, and that Sadie is always painting him up anyway. With everything settled, it's just back to the precinct now to fill out a mountain of paperwork.

You drive down the busy highway with Russo, when she suddenly speaks up.

"Sir, I have a question. About Cons. Do you feel love? Like human love?"

The two of you return to the precinct without incident. It takes the rest of the day to fill out the paperwork you need done to close the case. When it does finally come time to clock out, Russo changes into her normal clothes and wishes you good night. After turning in your gear, you head for the door. The chief stops you, calling from up the stairs in the lobby. You go to see her, and she pulls you into a huddle.

"I'm glad today went off without too much trouble. Got a message from a shopkeep in Silver Sands, saying two Cons busted up her store. I was worried she would press charges, then she told me what she was really calling about. Says she didn't know there were Cons in the precinct. Said if you ever want some find tuning, or a deep wax, drop by." The Chief hands you a business card, baring the address, number, and name of the Con body shop you were at earlier. "Guess you're smoother than you look." You thank the Chief for the compliment, and turn to leave. She stops you again.

"Listen, I know you've been on the force a long time. And you've been a detective for most of it. They'll never promote you again, but I want you to know I'm glad we have you. Isn't a day goes by you don't pull double your weight around here." You shrug, and tell her you're just doing your job.

Not anything really threatening. There are mostly groups that just don't want to grant civil rights to nonhumans, but they're seen as vocal minorities. There is a group called the Tower, who are made up of nonhuman members that commits acts of violence against humans, but they don't operate in the city as of yet, and are treated like any terror cell.
