You mutter irritably to yourself as you stomp forward, digging neat rows of holes into the hard earth.
You aren't certain if you've shrunk, or if the wheat has grown, or what, exactly has happened here- But you have decided, with the utmost certainty of someone reaching the limits of patience, that you do not, in fact, care.

Either you get a good meal and a good fight- and not necessarily in that order- or someone is gonna pay.

Another brainless weasel comes out of the wheatwork, and you smash its skull in passing, leaving a jittery corpse throwing up clouds of dirt.

You can't see the next portal, which means you're limited to trying to find it- You thought about tossing Jin up, but decided against it soon enough- She'd either be flying beneath the canopy- and not doing anything you couldn't- or she'd be above it, and unable to see the portal or you, most likely.

And so, you're slogging through a wheat forest, your stomach is starting to grumble, and your inner torrent of vengeful oaths has become an outer torrent of angry spider muttering.

Let Jin search from above and dip into the canopy on occasion to see if she can spot anything unusual that might be the portal or at least some clue. Either Nin flies up to serve as beacon for Jin to orient herself, or we need to have Sheshzka howl loud from time to time.

Ask Sheszka if she can find a scent. Anything interesting we can track down and kill?

I'm tempted to use earth magic to map the place, but it's only the second level and I don't want to waste a limited resource on the pleb-tier upper levels.

You won't let some dungeon beat you! Or any of it's denizens. Or anything, really. You like fighting, though you'd never admit it to mom. For obvious, health-related reasons.

You take a deeep breath.

It's a good way to let the tension out, your whole frame involved in the simple act of respiration.

You feel a bit cooler, and a lot less... on edge.

"Alright."
"Alright what?"
"Nothing, yes."
"Are you talking to yourself?"

"Yes. No. Nevermind, yes? Will you go up with Jin?"
"Hmmm?"

Nin drags herself up from her spot behind you, stretching lazily as your haroy friend starts to ready herself for flight.
"What do you want us to do?"
"Jin can scout, and you can stay above us, so she can find her way back."
"Oh. That would work."

You nod.

_______________________________________________________________

"The Queen's Own Winged Scout Core, Reporting!"
"- Who taught you that."
"Shannon!"

As if you didn't already consider the madwoman to be a bad influence.

Jin trills along with the moth, just as excited.
"Well, what did you find then?"
"I didn't go searching!"
"Wheat!"

"Wheat?"
"And the things. Yes. The big things."
"Weasels?"
"Yes!"

"Any sign of the portal? Or a break in the wheat. Or anything other than weasels."
"A clearing. Further ahead."

You nod, thankful for a direction.

We've washed clothes on occasion. Replacement clothes are common more because of wear and tear (through fighting) than because of how easily we replace them.

Elle will never wear the same clothes twice, because it's more fun to make a new set. Fairly certain she plans to induce this behaviour in the entirety of Oakring as well (though in the citizens' case it's less for fun and more because the crazy spider lady'll get pissed off with them if they do).

and now we've reached the stage of the conversation where we take bets as to who will have the biggest pile of kids, and who will have it first.

You fulfill your role as party leader, dutifully praising your scout pair for their efforts.
"Good job, yes."

Nin is seemingly satisfied with just that, though you've an inkling that she's nowhere near done yet.
Jin, on the other hand, carefully perches herself atop your shoulders, deftly avoiding the snoozing snake.

You rest an idle hand over her foot, steadying her and avoiding the horrific sound that'd result from talons on armour.

You head off in the direction your friend indicates, a gesture of her wings sending you through the dimly lit wheat forest.
"You didn't see anything else, yes?"
"Like what?"
"Like, ah- Monsters. Or strange things."

She's silent a moment, considering her words- And her attempt to speak further is interrupted by a sound like cracking wood as a stalk of wheat starts a slow tumble to the ground, the hiss of displaced air marking its descent.

"Some of the wheat was falling," She admits.
"Oh?"
"Mhm."

A... beetle of some sort trundles over the fallen grain, huge pincers scything over each other as it attempts to menace you.

Admittedly, it is a dumb monster, but still-

You're not quite sure how intimidating a teakettle is.

"I think it is trying to scare us, yes."
"It is making a dumb noise."
"We should stop it."
"Yes!"

Jin hoots once as she takes to the air, and you lower your spear as you start to circle your newfound opponent, important tactical information already swirling through your head-
How fast is it? How dangerous? How edible?

Just w/r/t spiders and sex/babies, from the ask:

>>I looked around your Q&As and didn't see this asked: we know that it takes roughly a month or two for monsters to hit physical maturity, but what about mental/sexual maturity? Let's assume that human "maturity" is roughly 18 years of age.

>It varies for individuals- At the absolute most, 2 years. Many start to develop 'interests' a few months after their growth, some take to it earlier.
It takes years before they're ready to have kids, though. Young monsters are nearly infertile.

>Unless she starts going assassin's creed with her venom on monsters more often.
Ezzy is more Conan than Altair in her fighting sofar.
>>
Oooh, I know why the ground has no spirits.

We're on the back of a giant turtle. The levels just keep getting more and more gigantized the further 'down' you go as you travel closer and closer to the turtle's original dimension.
>>
>>44779601
Ezzy is a tiny snek berserker not assassin, I don't think she ever used stealth for hunting before. Its always RIP AN TEAR.
>>
>>44776834
I had almost given up hope!
>>
>>44779601

She's less than 12 levels from her evo, we just have to throw her at one of the giant weasels (they're too big to slip around her, she can just latch onto its neck and bite).
>>
>>44779649
Which is why we need her to level up more, so we can send her out to get a rat's tail and then complete the class change quest.
>>
>>44779709
I fear there isn't much more hope for Ezzy to go a stealth route. By thids point she's more likely to evolve into a winged snake than into a stealthier one.
>>
Jin swoops with a casual ease, lighting up with magic with every pass, talons dancing over the creature's armour.
She leaves glowing trails where she strikes, and you're certain that it isn't just the beast hissing now.

You charge in with a similar lack of concern, ready to disarm the bug with alacrity.

It meets you, charge for charge. For what it's worth.

Which isn't much.

Your vastly enhanced strength makes it childs play to snatch it's pincers before they close. Chitin cracks under your hands as you grip hard and wrench them apart, tearing the monster's mandibles off entirely- It screeches again, in rage and pain, its whistling reaching a fever pitch.

You laugh wildly, rearing back to smash forward again.

-And the whistle turns into a heavy hiss, not of air but of something being forcible sprayed out.

You don't recognize the substance, and you don't get the chance to as it splatters across your arms and face.
It's irritating, certainly. An itching sort of slow burn.

Of more pressing concern is your immediate and utter lack of sight.

You lash out by reflex, your legs connecting even with your lack of sight- You can feel the thing's shell cracking beneath your blows, though it's only a momentary sensation before the force of our attack smashes it away from you.

The next few seconds are a mix of blind panic and determination, your brain flickering through every possible solution it can muster, discarding each as it goes.

You hear Jin's call again, and more hissing, and you cease guessing and take action.

Your shield fills up and over, water trickling down your arm as you raise it to your face, pouring the cool liquid across your self, ignoring the sudden protests of a certain snake. You force your eyes open even beneath that mild current, and some semblance of sight returns- Blurry masses, swathes of colours.

The irritation is noticeably lower, thank gods, but you're still unable to see.

"Ezzy!"
"Why are you ssssoaki-"
"Esmerelda! I can't see, yes!"
"Whu-"

"Where is it? Guide me, yes!"
"Ah- Left! Forwards!"

The lamia tugs your hair as in each direction as she shouts instructions, her tail taut about your throat the only sign of her own nervousness.

You close in on a large brown smear, the hissing growing once more Before you raise your fists-

You rear back, aiming your legs at the hissing monster beneath you-

And it responds in kind, rearing up, trying to get a better angle to aim its spit once more.
Your legs entwine as you fight for position-

You half blind, with a miniature lamia yanking your hair back and forth as she screams desperate directions, the beetle, flailing and hissing and doing its damnedest to stay alive for however long it needs to ready another attack.

It's not to be however.

Your legs scrape against shell, and secure in your aim, you clench- Snapping the intervening limbs like twigs, smashing it back to the ground as your spike feet drive straight through it, only to fold and tear free-

Your eyesight might not be in a good place, but it doesn't take twenty-twenty vision to know that anything is several twitching pieces is extremely dead.

You hiss downwards, crushing the most head looking bit beneath your fists, petty vengeance for your irritated eyes.

Ezzy is panting hard, a hissing, huffing noise as she strives to calm herself.
She still hasn't let go of your hair.

"Stay STILL!"
"It Stings, yes!"
"It's not gonna get better if you keep struggling!"

You keep struggling anyway.

You've taken a seat away from the mangled body of your previous nemesis, and you are currently straining your neck backwards, and doing your best to avoid the eye drops Nin is so keen on applying.

Ezzy has abandoned her seat to the current war, and the rest of your so-called friends stand idly by and watch.

The moth is trying her best to put you in a headlock- a lost cause on the best of days- but your hands are tied. Not literally, because that wouldn't work, but because you don't want to hurt her, and she is extremely determined.

You eventually lose.

Your eyes are puffy and irritable, but already getting better. She is probably 50% magic at this point. Or her dust is, at least.

"That wasn't so hard, was it?"
You scowl, chewing your chunk of giant beetle.
It isn't bad.

The beetle or the eyedrops, really, but you're dedicated to the complaint now.

Your friends don't care for the giant bug, so it's a short rest till your eyes recover, and you find yourself back on your feet and oriented towards the next gate once more.

"Thank you, yes."

Ezzy and Nin are both exceptionally proud.

>>
>>44781880
Maybe she's finally found her calling.

>Tiny rts mode snake upgrade.
>>
>>44781913
Well, she is the flight officer on the deck of the SS spidership.
>>
>>44781695
She directly directed the locomotion of an arachne monster while in a dungeon.

As dungeoneering is proper and fitting work for an adventurer, and the activity was done while a member of a party that is seeking to conquer said dungeon, her work there may be construed to be of a professional nature. Especially considering that Ezzy's efforts as part of the party shall potentially make her eligible for reward should relevant loot be acquired, thus cementing the task a professional endeavor.

Ergo, Ezzy is now a professional spider driver / pilot.

Should the whole adventuring thing not work out, at least she'll be able to put her experience to use when applying for jobs as a spider valet.

>Shez: Police dog/officer. Will sniff out your cocaine and read you your rights.
>Jin: Fighter/bomber pilot/plane. Singlehandedly replaces the Royal Canadian Air Force.
>Nin: Lobbyist for her own drug / soft drink manufacturer.

I am having a flash of insight here
This is the dungeon of the god of gold (wheat) and hate.
Now, rather than saying that hate is necessarily weasels, what if weasels were chosen by that god specifically in order to inspire hate in the MC?
After all, the dungeons are meant to test and reward potential followers, and proper dungeons are not just a hole in the ground, they actually respawn, so no reason that they cannot spawn different enemies for different entrants

Best part is, Lyra would totally play along, including loud beeping sounds as she backed out of a spot.
>>
>>44782956
>loud beeping sounds as she backed out
We should generally start doing that.
