After taking Mili back to her school, you hear Velya speaking in your mind -Sireyi I would speak with you, in my realm-.

-Oh course My Lady- Your respond, quickly casting a spell to whisk you away to Velya's Heaven.

You appear in Velya's reception hall, where she is surrounded by angels, and a group of succubi. They are all talking quietly and you recognise the angels being those of Velya's host who specialise in healing, and some of her best mages.

Once the succubi notice your approach they bow and say variations of “Your Majesty” and “My Queen.” You don't recognise these succubi, are they newly escaped from Hell?

No wait, you do know them, you've seen images of them in the memories of the succubi you rescued from the Sakheran. These are those you were not able to rescue, those whose souls you had thought lost. With these, ever succubi taken from your realm by the Sakheran has now been recovered.

“My Lady” you address Velya, both happy and almost struck dumb “How?”

Velya gives you a wry look “it's a long story, let's talk privately.” You follow her after spending a few minutes talking to the succubi, confirming who they are, and that they are all there.
>>
In one of her her private reception rooms, a sparse construction of white and grey marble, Velya explains “I speak sometimes with an Ifrit Lord who knows an Astral Explorer who is on speaking terms with a member of the Planar Hitchhikers Guild, who-” Velya breaks off and then starts again.

“The exact route the message takes isn't important” she says “what is important is this: The Sakheran will no longer be bothering you, and have returned the souls they took, along with as much of an apology as they could muster. They also promise to stay away from Oreia.”

You take all this in “not that I'm ungrateful” you say sceptically “but why?”

Velya looks unsure “Their message was light on specifics” she says “but they seem to believe that they were tricked into attacking Oreia, though they won't say by whom, or why they would attack a gods realm when they normally put so much effort into avoiding us..”

“How would-” you collect yourself, not wanting to start ranting “if they hate and fear Gods so much, why would they attack my realm and take my citizens?”

“I can only speculate” says Velya “perhaps they thought you were someone else, perhaps they took your citizens to find out the truth? Or perhaps to provoke a response, some way to see how much of a threat you were, whatever their reasons, it might be best to avoid them as long as they avoid you.”

“True” you agree, as much as you want to make them pay for what they did, with all of your citizens are back, and with you and Velya restoring them to life, for now these Sakheran are not your main concern.

Now you need to talk to your wives about Milerna no longer needing to read a certain book. But perhaps the Church of Konig doesn't need to know this, after all having her home regularly will be welcome.

“Everything is well I hope?” Kaela asks, after talking with Velya and seeing the freed succubi back to their homes, you have a meeting with your secretary about what else has been happening in Oreia recently. Kaela is giving you a wary look, as if expecting you to add to her workload.

“Everything is fine” you assure her with a smile, explaining what happened.

“Ah, good” says Kaela “well, that is good news, however...”

“However” you continue for her “there's plenty of bad news?”

“Indeed” she says, taking a sheet of parchment from the folder she always carries and handing it to you “for starters....”

It seems that some small problems that would normally be dealt with by your government have continued to build, to the point that Parliament is now getting involved and asking for your input.

It is the depths of winter and the cold is killing people in other nations. Thanks to your powers Oreia is much warmer than other places, although its still snowing every day. Your people are also pretty hardy and your insistence upon the basics like proper housing means that no one is freezing to death in their own homes, but even they are noticing it.

You also have plenty of food stored up, and even in this weather some fields can be cleared and planted – crops growing within days rather than months. Left to it's own devices, Oreia could feed itself indefinitely. Those nations willing to trade with you are asking for more and more food, and willing to pay handsomely for it.

“And can we spare it?” you ask Kaela bluntly.

“We can” she confirms “not on our own of course, the portal network of Dalvin and the Azure Empire allows for good to be bought from very far away, from hotter climates that are only just beginning to feel the winters bite.”

“So it's not yet a problem then” you say to Kaela.
>>
Kaela looks annoyed “on it's own, no” she says “but Parliament wants to intentionally use the food shortage to wring trade concessions from nearby nations as well as non-aggression pacts and mutual defence treaties. The Azure Empress has said she is in favour of this, but Baroness Sofia has objected, so far it's just in the planning stages but...”

“But sooner or later I'll have my sister and my wife arguing in my office” you say, shaking your head “wonderful, and if they do withhold trade in essentials, it will be the poor in those nations who suffer, not the rich. Why is Parliament doing this?” For that matter, why is your sister ok with it?

Kaela raises an eyebrow at you “Your Majesty have you ever been tortured? Been victimised?”

You look away “No. So they have the power to do what they want and the first thing they do is-”

“Protect themselves, protect their families” Kaela says “why is that a bad thing?”

“By bullying other nations?” you give her a direct look.

“If you were not here to found Oreia” says Kaela “if we had escaped Hell ourselves and settled here, would we not be fighting for our lives, are we not allowed to ensure peace?”

You think about arguing the point, about how they will resent Oreia once the lasting winter has gone, and the Killing Frost dead.

“Anything else?” you ask, closing the matter for now.

“Yes” says Kaela, handing you another piece of parchment “We've rescued more succubi who have escaped from the Hells, but a half-dozen have failed the screening process – they're infiltrators.”

You grimace, Oreia accepts all succubi refugees but some are loyal to one demon lord or another, so they go through interviews including some mind-reading. The process isn't foolproof, but short of completely invading everyone's minds it's about as far as you wanted to go.

“And?” you ask, then read the document in front of you “ok, so three for Zartalk, one each for Ombilious and Cormulhusk and one unknown, unknown?”
>>
The interviewer has scribbled a note saying “she confessed under questioning, but couldn't name her master, possible Geas spell?”

Over a hundred infiltrators have been caught in the last year, serving over a dozen demon lords. You expected it, but what worries you are the ones that might not have been caught. And that's the first unknown you've found. Some of the infiltrators confess they were ordered to come here, their lovers held as hostages: they are usually told to send non-vital information you give them. They string their masters along until Jallarial or the Belt-Notchers can break the hostages out.

Others are truly loyal to their masters but their thoughts give them away. Those are confined, allowed some freedom but are always watched. You hope one day they'll- Ah well no time to ponder that now. But one that confessed, threw herself on Oreian mercy but can't reveal her lords name, that's new.

Kaela still looks like she has something to say.

“And?” you prompt her.

“Our friends in other nations-” She starts.

“You mean our spies” you correct her.

“Living in other nations whilst simply listening for gossip isn't spying.” Kaela says, trying to look innocent as one corner of her mouth quirks up in a smile.

“When they're pretending to not be succubi and living under false names they-” You break off, it's an old argument. You motion for her to continue.

“They have noticed a number of merchants and other travellers claiming to be from various far away nations” says Kaela “visiting nobles, government officials, crime lords, anyone with significant political power. They are all from nations that we know or believe to be under the sway of the Lord of Life.”

“His infiltrators then” you say “what are they asking for?”

“Nothing yet” says Kaela “that we know of, they're asking for small trade concessions, offering gifts, sounding out their targets so far.”

“Which nations?” you ask.
>>
“All of them” says Kaela “they even approached the Azure Empire but...”

“But?” you ask.

“One of the orc chieftains took offence and beheaded several” says Kaela with a shrug.

You get up out of your chair and pace around your office, your wings twitching in irritation “We need to capture some, question them, find out what they know.”

“You can't deal with all of these things in person your majesty” Kaela says, giving you a pointed look as she straightens the pile of paperwork in front of her.

So, which task are you going to tackle first?

As you know, I made several mistakes recently in this quest. I have attempted to fix those as cleanly as possible without outright retconning things. I realise that this overrides some player votes, particularly on Mili reading the Tome of Necromancy, but I believe this to be necessary.

Also I have a bad headache today, if I quit unexpectedly it's probably due to that, and not me throwing a tantrum.

His minions include primal incarnations of winter, scarcity and war, all of whom utilize deific power stolen from gods it has slain and many thousands of abominations made from the people who lived in the nations it's conquered.

>Food trade
Set a quota of free food and allow the rest to be sold.
Also we should look in to asking the King next door if we can come to a deal that lets us or Sofia count him as a vassal (I don't expect him to be happy with the offer but we and him would get a lot of food out of it)
>>
>>44813709
>if we can come to a deal that lets us or Sofia count him as a vassal
He would have to legitimately consider us his liege, its magic. Which would likely throw Dornmer into civil war. A civil war we could likely win but would wreck our diplomatic efforts completly.
>>
>>44813709
>Set a quota of free food and allow the rest to be sold.
We are already distributing free food through the church of Velya IIRC. I don't think that changed. This is about the food we are selling and how much we leverage our dominance in the food trade.

>>44813709
>Also we should look in to asking the King next door if we can come to a deal that lets us or Sofia count him as a vassal (I don't expect him to be happy with the offer but we and him would get a lot of food out of it)
Sadly its not that easy, the Domain requires him to be our vassal and consider himself such, a large portion of the powerful nobility in Dornmer HATES Sireyi, they would revolt, if not on their own then with encouragement by our enemies.
Also its questionable how Konig would react, given he guaranteed we wouldn't try to do something like that.
>>
>>44813457
So what has been retconned? I haven't been in your other quests since they are not to my taste so I am kinda in the dark about anything you've said there.

As for food. I don't think we should squeeze the other nations balls by denying them food. Sell it at reasonable prices yes but I do think the goodwill we earn from not playing it hard when we have the opportunity for it will be better for our reputation and the diplomacy we have with other nations.
>>
>>44813946
>So what has been retconned?
Nothing got retconned per se. Just some issues got "resolved" that had come from the last thread, like the ninja giants and the fallout of it.
>>
>>44813946
>but I do think the goodwill we earn from not playing it hard when we have the opportunity for it will be better for our reputation and the diplomacy we have with other nations.
While thats a fair argument, I think using this to force through those summoning conditions and rules the mage guilds tried to stall wouldn't be unreasonable.
>>
>>44813982
Those are the ones that are like insanely powerful in another plane or something who kidnap people to their giant slave market right?

>>44814029
Point taken. I just want to avoid ruining what goodwill we've earned despite being a nation of demons. It would seem to be such a easy thing for desperate people to get the perception that the evil corrupted false goddess and her massive army of demons is making us starve unless we become her slaves. It will have to be approached carefully so as not to push the nations who already don't like us into hating and and those who are neutral to us into disliking us.

Still, more money would be nice so we can build and prepare more for the coming storm.
>>

>Those are the ones that are like insanely powerful in another plane or something who kidnap people to their giant slave market right?

>I just want to avoid ruining what goodwill we've earned despite being a nation of demons. It would seem to be such a easy thing for desperate people to get the perception that the evil corrupted false goddess and her massive army of demons is making us starve unless we become her slaves
Lots of people already have exactly that opinion, not to mention our deific enemy forcing this narrative to justifiy his warmongering against us, so its certainly something to keep in mind.
>>
“You're right Kaela” you say, conceding the point “and I think the most urgent matter is these infiltrators, we need to do something about those that we are holding, and this new one definitely needs attention.”

“I'll let them know you're on your way” says Kaela, casting a messaging spell as you head outside and take to the air. You could teleport, but you like to fly over your realm and your subjects perform short dives that pass for mid-air bows as they pass by you.

You guard surround you and land at the detention facility before you get there, several heading inside to ensure everything is safe before you can go in. You see a dozen guards constantly circling the facility in the air, ensuring no one makes an aerial getaway.

Dealing with this new arrival comes first, after that you can consider what to do with the other infiltrators.

You are met at the gates of the small building complex by Olansea – an older succubus who specialises in getting succubi loyal to their demon lords to realise how poor a deal they are getting.

“Your Majesty” she bows formally “it is an honour, please, if you would follow me?”

“Olansea” you say smiling “how are your charges?” She leads you inside the buildings, your guards surrounding both of you.

“Oh, as well as can be expected” she says, with a long-suffering grin “you're here to see Ticonda, our newest arrival?”

“What can you tell me about her?” you ask.

“Not much that wasn't in the report” says Olansea “she admitted she was an infiltrator as soon as we started questioning her, but claims she cannot give the name of her demon lord, and instead insists that she be locked up for everyone's safety. The answers she does give us are strange though.”
>>
“So she claims to be an infiltrator” you say “but we don't know who sent her, and she thinks she's dangerous to us somehow?” The two of you are in the centre of the complex, where the newly-caught infiltrators and spies are kept.

“That's about it yes your Majesty” says Olansea “the mages have taken a look at her and she is under some sort of spell that blocks mind-reading, but nothing else that we have been able to determine. There she is” She indicates an iron cage set into a stone wall, occupied by a single young succubus who is say leaning against a wall, her arms and wings wrapped around herself, her head down. The cell bars are covered in wards that block most magics.

You head towards her but your guards all crowd around you, halting your progress, the head of your detail gives you a look “your Majesty please” she says “she could be dangerous.”

“I'll be fine” you assure her, gently pushing past them.

But what to do about Ticonda?

>>
The fact that you can't see this hidden spell with your own natural powers is interesting, if nothing else.

You summon your arcane powers and go to work. Boosted by your own deific power you can clearly see the collection of spells holding this young succubus. It's a complicated mixture and includes spells that protect against detecting it, and removing it. It also has several traps hidden within it, but all centred around killing the succubus, none seem to be there to attack anyone who tries to pick it apart.

The network of magic is has a single spell in the middle of it, that seems built to kill the succubus under a number of conditions, though you don't know what they are. You examine this magic for some time for anything else unusual, and then you start to dismantle it.

The spells are complex, and skilfully cast, but they were cast by mortals or demons (you think) – certainly not by gods. You are also pretty sure that there were multiple mages that worked on these spells, and judging by some of these energies blood sacrifice was used to strengthen them.

The young succubus in the cell looks up as the last of the magical energies dissipate harmlessly, clearly aware that something is going on.

“What are you doi-” she starts, then seeing you she backs up into the corner of her cell furthest from you and starts shaking her head and saying “no-no-no” over and over again.

“It's alright” You say soothingly, projecting confidence and calm into your voice “I've removed the spells, I'm Sireyi, you're Ticonda right?”

The young succubus stops babbling and nods mutely, but doesn't say anything further.

“How did you come to be here Ticonda?” you ask gently “who sent you?”

She shakes her head, looking terrified. It takes several minutes of persuading and cajoling before she speaks, hesitantly at first, and then when she realises the spell truly is gone, it's hard to shut her up.
>>
Ticonda comes from a layer of Hell ruled by a demon lord who was once mortal, called Neshurga.

“This is the third infiltrator he's tried” interjects Olansea “far fewer than some demon lords. But all had some sort of spell on then, the others we could remove.”

“But this is new” you say for her, before motioning for Ticonda to continue. She is only fifty years old and has served Neshurga since she was born. Her parents are dead and she has three younger sisters. She was selected by Neshurga's sorcerers to infiltrate Oreia, her youth was seen as an advantage since she would be seen as naïve and non-threatening. Her sisters are being held as hostages to ensure her loyalty.

The spells they laid on her they didn't explain the full workings of, only that they would kill her if she revealed her lords name, or her mission. She was also told that since you would easily divine her mission, a conversation with you would likely be fatal for her.

“Then how did you tell everyone you were an infiltrator?” you ask Ticonda, slightly puzzled.

“The sorcerers said I'd be struck dead if I spoke or wrote a single word about what I was doing” says Ticonda, “so I drew a picture instead.”

Your mouth quirks up in a smile, no matter how powerful the sorcerer, sometimes they can make truly stupid mistakes. A general prohibition against revealing anything would have been more cautious, but perhaps they counted on the hostages to keep her in line.

“So why change sides so quickly?” you ask her.

Ticonda looks at you from within her cell, her eyes full of hope “Well Oreia” she says “I heard about it, rumours mostly, seemed too good to be true, then I got here, and we all went through the questioning, and I had to do something...and I think I kinda panicked actually, I didn't know if the spell would kill me anyway, but I had to try something.”
>>
You question Ticonda some more until you're happy with her answers, and then retreat to another room to discuss it with Olansea.

“What do you think?” you ask her.

“Well I'll add her kin to the rescue list” she says “and thank you My Queen, we could detect some sort of spell, but couldn't be sure to remove it safely.”

You nod, recalling the power and complexity of the spell, anyone short of yours or Isla's power and skill would simply risk killing the unlucky subject if they tried to remove it. Magic is an obvious help to infiltrators, which is why new entrants to Oreia are screened. Your enemies are using increasingly powerful magic to get their people into your borders. You're lucky this attempt was so easily circumvented. You'll need to think carefully about the screening process, if Ticonda hadn't been so keen to turn on her master she could be walking amongst your citizens even now, her loyalty compelled by magic. The sorcerers that are overseeing the screening are skilled, but as you've just seen, some things can get past them.

“Your Majesty?” asks Olansea, you realise you've just been staring at the wall for a few seconds.

“I'm sorry” you say “what did you say?”

“I said” Olansea repeats herself “what do you want us to do with those we catch who won't forswear their overlords?”

Infiltrators who are caught don't need to pledge loyalty to you, or to worship you, but they are asked under a truthspell to forsake any prior allegiances, with exceptions allowed for allegiance to organisations or entities that aren't your enemies.

Some don't however, and seem to prefer to remain loyal to their demon lords. What to do with them is a problem you're still puzzling over. There are eleven so far, but their numbers will grow, you are sure of it.

I don't think we have the resources and free time for that right now. Though once we have dealt with immediatly pressing problems holding trial over a new demon lord each year for abuse of their succubi subjects would probably help, and no one could fault Sireyi for looking out for the succubi now that she is one of their deities.

I wonder if ther are other succubi gods that are actually invested in their well-being.

Or more because they think they need to know if we hit them next, and then they start escalating things to threaten us. We can't wage war against all of them at once, especially not while having to fight a significantly more dangerous foe.
>>
>>44815519
I also want the LoL to unite the Lords of Hell against us, that sounds like a splendid plan.
>>
>>44815519
Ticonda is the succubus, Neshurga is the demon lord.

>>44815601
I'll admit my reasoning is he made us spend time on this and we'll save time in the long run but your point is a good one.
>>

The differences are that the demons are largely saving themselves and we just give them a place to go and they don't get us into war with a gigantic planar empire.
>>
>>44815673
>"not our priority"?
Its more that we can't realistically help them right now that they aren't our priority.
There are likely trilions of sentients in terrible tyranny or enslavement across the planes, as sad as it is, we can't help all of those and endangering those we already helped to satisfy our ethics isn't okay.
Its hardly a ideal state of affairs but we need to set priorities according to what we can accomplish, the succubi were easy to save because they had done half the work already themselves and we were going to smack Salvastis anyway.

I figure it deserves at least one reply.
>>
>>44815703
Remember that time when the MC was a simple paladin, with no divine powers to speak of? And then she got faced with an oppressive planar empire led by demons with power far eclipsing her own? I guess that was pretty stupid when she decided to rise up against them despite the odds. Who would even do that?
>>
>>44815835
>I guess that was pretty stupid when she decided to rise up against them despite the odds.
The difference is that back then all she really ndangered was herself not milion of people depending on her. If Sireyi wouldn't be a ruler of a nation I'd vote for her to wage deific guerilla war on those assholes in an instant.
>>
>>44815835
If you even need the differences between those situations to be explained to you, this conversation isn't worth continuing.
>>
“For now” you say “just keep them under guard, keep talking to them to see if they're ready to switch allegiances as usual.” They have to come to their senses eventually...

“As you wish my Queen” says Olansea, bowing.

You head out of the compound, your guards surrounding you, as you ponder how to make the magical side of the screening process more robust, without you or Isla needing to screen every refugee from hell personally.

Outside, Kaela is waiting for you “Your Majesty” she says, looking very annoyed “I'm sorry to come chasing after you, but Pulbatorad was most insistent this matter demands your urgent attention.”

You groan “territory dispute again?”

“Yes” says Kaela, her fingers tightening on her file, a clear sign of her irritation “it's Densaug.”

“What did he do?” you ask, though you think you already know.

“Took a dozen wild cattle from Pulbatorad's territory” says Kaela “or so Pulbatorad claims, he did however bring several cow bones with Densaug's arcane mark on them – says they were scattered near one of his false lairs.”

“That's the third time this month” you complain. You've won the allegiance of dozen of dragons within your borders and as part of that you've asked them not to kill each other. However, dragons being dragons, their territorial instincts haven't gone away, and they regularly raid in each others territories. You can't decide which dragon first came to you to arbitrate a dispute but now they regularly come to you. You can just imagine Pulbatorad prowling around your residence, making his presence known as only a 50ft-long dragon can. He's one of your less patient petitioners.

“Why is Densaug doing this?” you asks Kaela, as you head back to your home, flying through the cold air with the guards around you.

“There's several females of his age near his territory” she responds, checking her notes “he's probably trying to impress them.”
>>
“Dragons are supposed to be intelligent and wise creatures” you grumble “why do they insist upon acting like a pack of children?”

“Densaug is only a hundred” Kaela points out, with a half-smile “that's teen years for a dragon isn't it?”

An unhappy dragon is not a problem anyone wants, but even Pulbatorad won't actually attack anyone if you keep him waiting, and do you really want the dragons to know you'll just drop everything and come running when they have an argument.

I wonder if we could make draconic territorial fights organized.

Like, imagine a huge arena, with warded seats for spectators and judges, where dragons could settle their differences with force. Maybe with a handicap system to keep smaller dragons from getting completely stripped of lands by much stronger ones.

Proceeds from spectacle would get split among the crown to cover the cost, the loser as consolation and majority to the victor.
>>
>>44816683
While Oreia might be mostly inhabited by mainly Neutral to Evil inhabitants, I can't see Sireyi letting the matter of justice and legal right be settled by strength of arms instead of actual legal process.
>>
“Tell Pulbatorad I'm busy” you tell Kaela “and that I'll see to Densaug as soon as I can. I can't simply come running whenever the dragons start bickering. I need to see Parliament about this food trade issue.”

“Of course your Majesty” says Kaela with a smile, noting something down in her file, and then peeling off as you head for Parliament.

When you enter the building Parliament is in session, discussing the boundaries of local governance. As towns were being built in Oreia, and before the central government was up and running you encouraged each settlement to elect mayors to lead your subjects, and to handle small problems. Most of the mayors were once clan chiefs.

Now Parliament is throwing is weight around on things, and the mayors are unhappy. If they can't sort it out then they'll eventually bring the problem to you, and you'll need to define what is an issue for the national government, and what is a local issue.

When you enter the main chamber the argument is in full swing, with representatives face-to-face yelling at one another.

As you are announced the chamber gradually quietens and you you exchange polite greetings before asking the current Speaker for the floor. She slams her wooden hammer down and you address the House “Thank you for your attention, I come before you today to discuss the export of food from Oreia. I had asked that any food that we did not need was to be distributed to the surrounding kingdoms through the churches, but I understand that Parliament wants to restrict this, holding back food in exchange for political concessions, would someone mind explaining why?”

As you sit down, several succubi leap up, the Speaker points to one “Your Majesty” starts the nominated one “I understand your commendable compassion in this endeavour but you are throwing away an enormous diplomatic advantage. We could still feed all the peoples of the surrounding lands and protect Oreia, I see no reason not to do both.”
>>
>>44816683
A cute idea but I'm not seeing a way to make this okay for a Lawful Good person.
>>
As she sits another rises, also extolling the virtues of the plan. As does the next, and the next. Eventually one dissents.

“I am glad the Queen has come to talk some sense into you all!” yells one speaker, glaring around the chamber “I am ashamed to call myself Oreian if this is the attitude we now ascribe to – starving children and the poorest folk in all nations simply so we can feel like we're making ourselves safer. Have you forgotten what it was like to be slaves? To be hunted? Or are you just that cruel?”

The chamber erupts into another shouting match. You could simply order parliament to do it your way, and they would probably obey, but you very much want them to govern themselves, even if that means you don't always agree with their decisions.

Your choice?

>Order them to stick to the original plan
>Let parliament decide
>Set up a subcommittee or something, fewer people deciding makes it easier to get what you want
>Try to talk them around, whilst still letting them choose (make take several days)

Primarily crops-based stuff: grain, wheat, vegetables, potatoes etc.

>Try to talk them around, whilst still letting them choose (make take several days)

No abusing our position for profiteering. Not only is it a wrong thing to do, it is also risky in short term since it may cause more lukewarm or reluctant allies and partners to look for ways to switch sides or seek alternate solutions, and it also undermines our image in longer term, tarnishing our reputation among the people here and abroad. And by us I mean not just Sireyi but the whole country.

Focus on securing rights and legal protection for Oreian citizen in those nations, everything that eases movement for them. Make non-agression pacts where necessary, exchange of information would be helpful too. Mutual defense might seem like extorting I would hesistate with that.
>>
>>44816914
I worry that if you restrict one channel, crime and black market will make sure that goods are trafficked at higher prices through the other. Maybe the churches will keep distributing the food as ordered, but the recipients will be targeted by extortion and robbers.
>>
>>44817285
>I worry that if you restrict one channel, crime and black market will make sure that goods are trafficked at higher prices through the other.
That will already be a problem, if food prices are high, people might already target the poor for those distributed goods. I'm pretty sure the churches know this and have taken steps to prevent it, likely by not giving them the food to carry home but rather feed them in the church.

Its not a ideal thing, certainly, but allowing the merchants to extort the poor is just as bad in the end.
>>
>>44817270
Fair point about mutual defense, it might be a bit much if we want to maintain goodwill.
>>
>>44817285
>worry that if you restrict one channel
A reasonable concern, and I would personally prefer not using this situation to force concessions, because this food is ultimately a divine gift of a power of good, using it for personal profit sits poorly with me.
But its clear the parliament is hell bent on doing that so we need to find a compromise between their understandable political desires and Sireyis ethics. One that doesn't compromise the latter.
>>
“I will trust Parliament to make the right decision” you say “but I urge you to consider the effect your choices will have upon the most vulnerable people in the surrounding nations. If you do decide to bargain for concessions from the various nations then I suggest looking out for the basic rights and security of Oreian citizens in terms of summoning, non-aggression pacts and being able to travel in other nations rather than enriching Oreia through trade.”

You continue to talk with Parliament for the rest of the day as they discuss this matter in a much more restrained manner now that you're present.

By the time you leave they've agreed on what to do, and are starting to haggle over details.

You are Milerna Jalweyen, angel-blooded and born paladin of Konig. You are 9 years old, and are attending paladin training at a church of Konig school.

The holidays are over, and you and your friends are back in school.

“Talk to him!” insists Jenny, sat next to you at the lunch table.

“Why me?” you protest

“Why talk to him at all?” asks Chesi, sat on your other side “it's obvious someone's feeding on him, and if he didn't like it, he'd tell them to stop.” She examines an undercooked potato on her fork, wearing a frown.

Everyone at your table gives Chesi a look; ranging from confused to irritated.

“No one's feeding on him Chesi” you point out “besides, who would that be? How many succubi are at the school?”

“Then why is he tired all the time?” Chesi counters.

You're sat with Chesi, Jenny and Michael. Gilyan and Sera are spending lunch doing extra horse drills and Thomas, the topic of conversation, is nowhere in sight.

You've been back to school for a week, and everything was going fine. But the last few days Thomas hasn't been around much: you've seen him now and then, but he's been hanging out with the Swordies a lot, and has looked tired most of the time you've seen him.

“Fine, stop bugging me!” you grumble “I'll talk to him about it!”

After lunch, in math class, you try to talk to Thomas. But whereas he's normally happy to ignore boring math problems and chat, he instead leans over his work and gives short responses to anything you say.

“Thomas please” you say in a friendly manner “you can tell me”

“It's nothing” he insists

“It's obviously something” you point out “otherwise you wouldn't be so tired all the time.”

“It's none of your business” he counters, looking away from you.

“I'm your friend” you say in hurt tone “or at least, I thought I was” You pout and give him the hurt expression that works wonders with Mama Jal.

Thomas sneaks a peek at you and soon cracks “I'm training with the Swordies” he admits “They have this thing called the gauntlet where you have to run down a corridor with them lining it on either side and they all attack you and you need to get to the end and defend yourself. They're also letting me pair up with some of the older students to learn advanced weapon skills, but-” He hesitates.

“But...” you prompt him.

“But it's really hard” he says “I've said I want to maybe not do so much every night, or maybe even take a day or two off, but they won't let me until I beat the final test” He stifles a yawn.

“What's the final test?” you ask.

“I've got to defeat four other students in a single practise match” he says “I can do it alone or with a partner, but so far I haven't managed it.”

“If you need a rest” you say “why not just tell them you're taking a day off.”

“They won't let me” says Thomas “and some of the older students” he goes quiet as the math tutor walks by, both of you concentrating on your work. Once the teacher is out of hearing he says “I can't quit, I just can't, I have to beat them.”

Between lessons you track down Sera and Gilyan and ask them about this training.

“I've heard about secret training clubs” says Sera “but I don't know much about them, supposedly they're a bit like private study groups, but anyone using practise weapons is required to have an instructor present.”

Gilyan is better-informed “I've heard about it” she says “even got invited to join once, but when I saw what it was, I turned it down. They sneak the practise weapons out and train without any adults around, and usually do it in the dumbest manner possible: fighting bout after bout until they're exhausted and battered. They force the younger members to run gauntlets where they just beat them all with weapons, and set them impossible tests and trials. It's” she struggles for the right thing to say “such a boys way of doing stuff. You might learn something in a place like that, but if you do it'll be by accident, and all the while you'll risk getting your skull cracked by another idiot waving a weighted wooden sword around thinking he's a hero in a story.”

Seems like Thomas is better off leaving this club. Still, it's best to hold off making plans until yer see the mark, as Mama Jal says.

Late that night, you follow Thomas with your friends in tow: Chesi and Jenny and Gilyan and Sera and Michael. Thomas was reluctant at first, but you said that if you liked what you saw, maybe some of you might join. You all sneak out after curfew and Thomas leads you to a part of the school you've never been to before: must be where the older students train and stuff.

You enter a big training arena and see groups already fighting mock battles with weapons and individual duels and stuff.

Other than you and your friends, the youngest people here must be at least a couple of years older than you. Almost all are boys.

When Thomas enters the arena a group of older boys rush towards him “hey it's Tom, it's the recruit, ready to train hard kid-hey who are all the girls?”
>>
Ignoring Michaels “hey!” you step forward and says “We're here to watch, that's not a problem is it?”

The group of boys comes to a halt in front of you and your friends and you hear muttering at the back, words like “princess” and “spoiled little brat” and “freak”.

One big wide boy steps forwards and says in a cocky tone “there's no spectators here, if you want to stay, one of you has to fight me.” You look him up and down, he probably weighs twice what you do, any of you would have a problem fighting him.

Michael says in a slightly confused tone “if there's no spectators, then why does only one of us have to fight y-” You hear Sera shushing him.

Gilyan steps forward “weapons or unarmed?” she says challengingly to the big boy.

“Frederick Galtingham” he says, pausing as if expecting you to be impressed. You see Gilyan suddenly look tense and as you step past her she says in a low voice “careful, he cheats a lot.”

You're not worried, you know you can beat him. But how?

When you just cock your head to the side curiously, Galtingham looks annoyed.

“I don't think we'll need weapons” you say “do you?”

“Using a weapon on you would be unfair” he says, balling his hands into fists “but you go get one if you want” he nods towards a weapons rack holding all sorts of weighted wooden weapons.

You look over at the weapons rack, then back at him “Seems kinda pointless” you say “going all that way when I'll only need to swing the weapon once, no, I think I'll just use my fists too.”

“You are a cocky little brat” he snorts, closing with you quickly and swinging a heavy fist at your face. You duck and summon your paladin power, the whole fight seems to slow down and you can see how slow and clumsy he really is. You pop up after dodging his punch and slam two punches into his belly. Thanks to a lot of practise with Mama Sofia you can direct your attacks when using Battle Mastery to avoid hurting people two bad.

[DE 3/7]

Your blows elicit a grunt, but otherwise have little effect. Galtingham seems to be pretty tough. He kicks at your legs and you back up, trying to figure out your next move. He rushes at you, arms spread, and you dodge aside.

As he gathers himself for another rush, you realise there is a stone pillar nearby you could run him into, which would end the fight but might hurt him. Or you could try and avoid hurting him too badly and wear him down with lots of punches.

You can clearly see his plan is to grab you and try to crush you using his side and strength.

What do you do?

>Keep dodging around him, wear him down

It's less dangerous
>>
>>44819926
Its easier since we don't have to fight against his strength, and its easier to make sure he doesn't get seriously hurt.
>>
>>44819926
>>44819934
Are you two alright? Up until now it's been the 4th roll with the high number, not that I'm complaining.
>>
You want to end this quick, but you don't want to seriously hurt anyone. As Galtingham comes charging at you, you duck under his sweeping arms and kick out at his legs, trying to knock him down rather than destroy his kneejoint, as your Battle Mastery keeps trying to convince you to do.

With a little help from you, Galtingham tangles both his feet together and falls down. With his arms crossed together as he attempts to grab you, he can't get them up in time to arrest his fall and his face slams into the wooden floor. He rolls over, tries to climb to his feet, them sits down cross-eyed, blood streaming from his nose.

To his credit he doesn't start crying, he just gazes around and says in a dopey-sounding voice “where did she go?”

As your friends clap and cheer you hear one of the boys from the group opposite you say “I guess you can all stay.”

Oh good, now you just need to figure out how to get out of here with Thomas.

On the food front it's us Sofia (she did get the power to keep her land frost free right) our sister and the off plane trying to feed a world atm right? Any ideas how to improve this?
>>
>>44814529
Can I just ask, did spending DP give us anything beyond what a 20 would have given us?
>>
>>44821785
Voting to use DP in the linked post: no

However additional points were spent to enhance the spells themselves as outlined in the prior vote, overcoming the various contingencies the target spell had; Deific magic overcoming mortal magic despite its skill.

>>44821875
Ok thanks.
