The Story So Far: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=hellborn
1-50 Thread Summary: http://pastebin.com/DYy8w24r
51-100 Thread Summary: http://pastebin.com/wx3HtRT5

You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are the Imperiate – the one true tyrant of the thousand hells. That is, if you can survive long enough to reclaim your inheritance.

In order to ensure you’re kickass enough to take your varied enemies head on, you’ve decided to rush forward with operation mad gains. Tonight, you and a motely crew of your selection will telezap into Canada. There you’ll go tripping over to the shores of Lake Superior to claim the anchor node of an elemental spirit, and master its power as your own.

Borislav Zerevskii, Muir Woods’ resident druid, had ordered you to chill the hell out before your showdown with the ancient elemental. Except now your kind of dad-person Isaac decided to invite himself along for the ride. Which is cool, you guess.

Anyway, after this homely family barbeque (where your boyfriend guy is present), it’ll be about time to prepare yourself for an incredible Canadian journey. Though not as incredible as the road trip you just returned home from, let’s get that straight.

If you mess up this spirit business, you’ll be too weak to confront your myriad enemies. King Yellow, Sulkrasph the shadow master, and the Stygian Grand Wyrmwrither Ushologuissa all have reasons to want you gone, and you’re running out of time.

--

You squint at the picture of you and Ossifera, the dragon whose only dream was to acquire beach front property, and come to the only conclusion one can conclude. “Forget glitter,” you tell Harvey, “put like an edgy high-contrast filter on it, with some urban graffiti font that’s like ‘Dealing with Dragons’.”

Everybody has a good chuckle at your suggestion. Obviously you know best how to present your dragon pics on the internets.
>>
>>44823343

Except Wolf. “Why not this one?” he asks, reaching out to swipe Rowan’s phone and get a picture that actually includes details, details like scales and facial features.

“Gotta keep the magic alive, Wolf,” you chide, inhaling about half a hamburger as you explain. “No mere image could hope to capture the sheer majesty and near-sightedness of Ossifera the Splendorous, Mistress of the Whited Plains.”

Harvey nods in learned agreement. “The lack of photorealistic quality is an invitation to the imagination,” he says.

Wolfgang sighs, defeated.

You knock your knuckles on his shoulder. “If you really need your dragon fix, you know, if you’ve got the shakes, I’ve been there man,” you say. “I think Vikrama uploaded the raw footage to YouTube – raw unadulterated dragon, as much as you can stand.”

“Through the cheap digital lens of my cellphone camera,” Ro adds, smiling helpfully.

Isaac prepares another hotdog for himself, and cracks open a can of root beer. “So long as you don’t try to pass if off as a real dragon,” he says. “The last thing Ossifera’s ego needs is for her to become an internet phenomena as proof dragons are real.”

Cassandra laughs. “Most people prefer their fantastic things to be strictly fiction,” she says. “Don’t go depriving the people of their fundamental right to an ignorant sense of security.”

“You mean their fundamental right to a freedom from fear?” asks Wolfgang, sounding a little sour.
>>
>>44823353

“Oh, call it whatever helps you sleep at night,” she says, a twinkle of mock sympathy in her eye.

“Great. I think I will, Mrs. Hallow,” he says sarcastically.

But you, you’re just glad to see everybody getting along.

Barbeques have a way of ending when you run out of food. You don’t run out of food, but you run out of your ability to consume more food, which has a similar effect.

You still have the whole day and evening ahead of you, time you have to prepare for your excursion to conquer a spirit and avoid getting murked by a bunch of demons in a back alleyway.

But how will you prepare, and who will you take with you, besides Isaac and Borya?

Like, you could just chill, or maybe hang out with somebody. Or maybe you should prep with Moriah? She hasn't had time to do the research, but she knows about ghosts. Or maybe somebody in the conclave knows more about this type of thing.

And then there's all those guns and weird things from your Dad. Maybe you should try some of them out? Or maybe you should talk to a heavy-weight magic person, like Mr. Crowther or Ms. Song.

We should certainly give Moriah a call, if only to let her know we are going ahead with the plan early. It would be awkward if she shows up later with a folder full of information to find out we have already gone and done it, or hears about it from her brother first.

And if you get a moment's privacy, carve some stuff on yourself, though if it seems like that might be awkward, don't. She makes my benis feel tingly

Moriah... well, you need to talk to Mori, but you don’t know if you should drag her along on this one. It’s kind of against what she’s been telling you over the past couple weeks about how you need to slow down. It’d be kind of awkward having somebody who doubts you around when you should be sure of yourself. (+1 Stress: 25)

As for now, you recruit Wolf in helping you to get some supplies laid out for your journey. Isaac helps out as well, and before long, you’ve got a good kit assembled in backpack form. Isaac works on getting his own gear together as you prepare for the next phase of the plan.

After Wolfgang takes off, you enquire about anti-spirit bullets and stuff. As you suspected, there is such a thing, and Isaac has a few weapons in reserve for just such an obstacle. However, as he wisely points out, your objective isn’t to kill the spirit at Lake Superior, but to claim its anchor well. He reassures you that if worst should come to worst, he’ll have his crossbow with him.

Cassandra needs to stay in San Francisco to hold down the fort – with the marshal and deputy marshal out of town, somebody competent needs to stay on call.

Anyway, you want to be prepared for anything you might need to face. Zelathis is good and all, but your dad left behind a few weapons that might be handy. The pain-blade thing seems pretty straightforward, though not useful for what you’re doing tonight/tomorrow.

You’re more curious about the ones you haven’t had chance to test out, like his two rifles, or the spear thing. Or you have tested out the runed up spear, but you couldn’t figure out its thing.

After pestering Isaac about your family heirlooms, you find out useful details that should help you on your quest for power.

After looking it over for a second, Isaac informs you that the bolt-action rifle is a Gewehr 98.
>>
>>44825164

It’s seen its fair share of use. Since it’s so old, he’s not sure if it’s built to withstand the higher forces from modern ammunition in 7.92, but he also tells you he knows a gunsmith who does good work in any caliber. He’s likely to have the older-style cartridges you’d need.

Isaac also takes a look at the handgun and the rifle-machinegun thing. The handgun’s a Walther P38, which takes 9mm, so that’s easy. The other rifle is an FG-42, the weapon that served as the basis for the design of the M60. It’s also 7.92, so ammunition won’t be too difficult to find, though the same restrictions hold true. The weapon just wasn’t designed with modern cartridges in mind. Using over-the-counter bullets are more likely to cause problems like jamming.

As for the magic side of the weapons, Isaac can’t say. He can’t decipher the script carved into the FG-42 – it’s not in any language he’s familiar with, which is saying something. But as it turns out, the Third Reich’s specialists utilized magic from strange and dangerous sources, so it’s not necessarily a surprise to see something like this from an SS officer.

He bids you to take care when trying to figure out the enchantments on the weapons, and to refrain from using them alone until you have a better idea of what they’re capable of.

With that in mind, you set out to test a bunch of old guns and a magic spear.

>Rowan’s the girl for the job. She’s dealt with black magic and guns all her life.

Amounts of powder, shape of cartridge can differ
>>
>>44825569
They blow up better. Maybe too good for a gun with a design too old and maintenance too long overdue.

Also maybe the bullets and/or cartridges are shaped differently than they were back when those guns were in use.

So, for the weapons, Orias, Ulam and Ranthix are our best bet for knowledge on the FG-42. Ulam seems the most likely of the three though.

Can guns be reworked without fucking up the enchantment? I'd wager a sufficiently skilled enchanter could transfer the effect to or replicate the effect on replaced parts, or a different gun entirely.

Yeah, I only voted for Harvey because it might let him pick up a thing or two. And also because he's a top-tier bro.
>>
>>44825202
>Summon Ranthix the Terrible, gun samurai and firearm specialist.
>>
>>44825709
I would think that besides the maintenance issue, Modern 7.92 for civilian use might be underpowered for a military rifle, which could also cause jams, or fail to completely cycle the action.
Though, in the event that we actually want to use the thing, we should probably take it apart and see if anything looks worn out, corroded, or needing lubrication.
>>
>>44825912
We should ask Harvey if he wants to lubricate our guns.
>>
You call Orias and Ulam before you leave, seeing if they’re busy with stuff. Since Orias is less busy, you recruit him to help you in identifying your magic magics. Then on your way out, you grab Harvey and drag him with you. His expertise is particularly relevant – and also he needs to get out more.

You whistle for Reeber and steal the minivan, leaving Rowan to enjoy the first afternoon in a long time devoid of adventure.

Harvey along for the ride, you pick up ammunition from the aforementioned gunsmith. Though interested in seeing your antique rifle, you withhold it for the time being, unsure of how it might react to somebody who isn’t also magic.

You head down to the batcave warehouse by the docks, and open it up. You both get to unpacking your choice items – the handgun, the two rifles, and the spear of destiny (working title).

While Harvey is slotting bullets into the old magazines, Orias finally shows up.
>>
Your Belphegoran conclave-partner is looking tanner than the last time you saw him. His wavy jet-black hair is loose, and he wears a leather jacket, designer jeans, and a pair of boots. It’s kind of a rich cowboy kind of look, which you guess matches somebody who rides striders through the vicious plains of Beleroth shooting hapless basilisks.

“I do hope I’m not late,” he says, edging in through the half-open door. His emotions, as usual, are purposefully restrained – though his restraint feels about as restrained as rabid dogs on the end of a chain. Intense, but technically no danger if you’re out of reach.

Reeber bounds over and attempts to get his tongue on every inch of Orias’s face. With skill, Orias throws the charging hellhound to the ground, and gives the dog’s exposed flank a solid rubdown.

>Demonstrate correct mastery of a proper courtly greeting.
>Nah, you’re not late, haven’t even started yet.

“Ah, Orias of House Vincain,” you reply in Heltic, faking a sharp, partly threatening smile. “I see you answered my uh... the summons. That I summoned you with.”

Orias is too involved with Reeber to spare you more than a glance. “Good, but you can be more condescending in casual association,” he replies in generally more elegant language. “You’re young, powerful and Inferian. Harmless Inferian bravado is mostly charming to those who fancy themselves able to kill you without difficulty.”

“Wait, charming to Belphegorans, or in Beleroth specifically?” you ask in English. “Or is this like, a family rule for Vincains?”

The demon leaves Reeber and brushes his hands off. “Any court that styles itself in the Belphegoran way,” he says, “and there are many of those. If you think you could defeat the person with whom you speak, belittle them freely – it will inflate your own position. But lay off the threats unless you mean it.”

Like much of hellish manners, it makes a basic kind of sense appealing to instinct. “Oh. So for you, assuming I thought you could kill me, I’d be all boastful or whatever, because it shows off insecurity.”

“Assuming you thought I could kill you,” he says, giving a thin smile. “People will expect you to be headstrong. It will scare them more if you act conniving – you’ll come off as more of an unknowable threat. Unless, of course, your audience is manipulative, then in that case, it will impress them, as they will desire to use you for their own purposes,” explains Orias. “Keep trying. You’re much improved.”

You make a note to be more Ranthix sounding in the future.

He comes over, Reeber coming back to sit at your side.

“Haven’t seen you and Reebs together in a while,” you say.

Orias inclines his head. “Mr. Crowther is a generous host, but... he is strict when it comes to animals.”

“They can carry diseases,” says Harvey, setting aside one magazine and moving to the next.

“As does everyone whose company is worthwhile in life,” he replies stiffly.

You snort. “So uh. You okay to do this?” you ask, leaning on the table. “You feel like a potential lawsuit.”

Orias replies with a brief smile, hands grasped behind his back. He still sort of puffs out his chest in an overly formal way sometimes – hard to go ultra casual after a lifetime of formal, you guess. “I discovered this morning that Waldric entered into intrigues without general consent,” he says. “I am... still displeased. But I am perfectly in control.”

“Doesn’t feel like it,” you observe.

He arches an eyebrow. “Doesn’t it?”

Well. You are familiar with states of less control. Orias is half Infernus. You can fill in the blanks. “I was just putting it out there,” you say, scribbling your fingertips along the top of Reeber’s head. “I’ve only got mortals for the most part to compare to.”

He nods, understanding. “You mentioned weapons?” he asks, turning his gaze onto the weapons on the table.

“Yep,” you say. “I had a few questions for you.”

You get Orias to give you the low down on the goods.

He examines the firearms in depth. The old bolt-action comes first. “I’m not certain I’ve sensed this type of magic before,” he says, turning the weapon over to run his hands over the stock. “The enchantment feels... around a century old, from the fraying.”

“What’s it do though?” you ask, folding your arms.

Harvey also folds his arms, mimicking your stance. “Yeah, what’s it do though?”

Orias goes quiet for a minute while he examines the weapon. He tests its weight, puts it to his shoulder and aims at the ceiling, and bombards it with a dozen tiny magics. And then he hands it to you. “It’s a condenser,” he says. Seeing your lack of understanding, he continues, adding, “There’s a spell worked into it. If you push enough power into its body, it will weave a spell with the energy.”

“I’ll take that,” says Harvey, intercepting the weapon before you can grab it.

You allow Harv his own time with the weapon, and watch as Orias goes on to the next weapon, the handgun. He finds its small size almost laughable. At the short range you would need to be to make use of the weapon, he tells you, any demon who knew what they were doing would be able to do far worse to you. At most, you might use a weapon like this on scumborn peasants – those without proper armor or magic to resist the attack.

But while the power of the ballistic qualities of the Walther are substandard as far as shooting demons is concerned, it makes up for it with magic. “And... I have no idea what form that magic takes,” Orias says. “The enchantment’s spellwork shares the same imperviousness as the Gewehr, like looking into a stone.”

“Well?” you ask. “You know if it’s a condenser or what?”

“No, this one’s a vessel,” he replies, holding the weapon in both hands and following all of its angles. “Given a specific trigger, it should chip off some of the power stowed inside to cast a spell.”
>>
>>44829222

“And you don’t know what the spell or the trigger is,” you say.

“Enchanters using a firearm as a vessel trend toward the literal trigger for that,” he replies, pointing to the trigger in question.

You take the gun again - it feels heavier now that Harvey got some bullets in it – and lay it carefully back on the table. You look to Orias again as he begins examining the FG-42.

Then he catches a glimpse of the thin, chaotic script scrawled over the stock and etched into the barrel, following random lines. Alarm flickers across his expression, and he quickly sets the weapon down.

You and Harvey regard him with curiosity.

“What is it?” you ask.

Orias resumes his façade of calm, but you can tell he’s troubled. “This is a Zhermaec weapon,” he says.

“You mean Germanic,” Harvey replies, holding up the rifle in his hands. “They’re all German guns.”

He regards the weapons in a new light. “I see,” he says, thoughtfully.

Bankers made a mint on WWI, as they make on any war. They were able to demand payments that further impoverished Weimar Germany, already struggling with reparation payments. A large percentage of international bankers art Ashkenazi Jews, because they tend to be more intellegent. So, the Nazi party tendered the "argument", "jews are bankers, bankers are bad for Germany, therefore jews are bad for Germany". And folks ate it up.
>>
“Hold on, when did you see one of these before?” you ask.

“Not this type specifically,” says Orias, “but I’ve seen weapons of comparable make from the realms of Hafen.”

You haven’t heard that one before. “Hafen?”

“It’s a land the Deutsch claimed after the war with the Demonbane, three score and ten years ago. It’s in the bogswamps of Old Chthonia.”

Harvey finds this circumspect. “If they’re Deutsch, why call them Zhermaec?”

“It’s what the Demonbane called them, Zhermaec. Or Germanic,” he says, now recognizing the two words are one in the same.

“A few demons didn’t like them either and the name stuck,” says Harvey, nodding.

“You’re refreshingly astute for a Demonbane,” Orias replies.

You purse your lips like an angry fish. “Hey yo, that’s my freaking bro, you know,” you say, playing up the harmless statement for its racist value.

Orias stumbles. “I mean... compared to... others. Others not Demonbane, merely in general. Your bro – brother is a shrewd lad.”

You and Harvey execute a fist bump.

But while Harvey can keep his face straight, you can’t. You laugh. “So... maybe you’re out of the loop, but my dad was a total Nazi. All this junk belonged to him,” you say, waving a hand over your collection of salvaged goods.

“Your father....” Orias regards the weaponry with newfound trepidation. “I didn’t realize. You’re half Deutsch then?”

“Not really,” you reply. “I mean, Dad was half Verwelken. But he was born in Germany, and he was half human, and Dad’s dad was... he was a jerk. And even if I am a quarter German or whatever, Old Glory said I’m a full-blooded American. Didn’t zap my eyes out or anything like it probably would’ve done if I was a Nazi.”

Orias has lost track of what you’re talking about. Harvey though follows with great interest, hanging on every word as if it were the most magical thing he’s ever heard.

“Anyway,” you say, reeling it back in before awkwardness can intensify, “mortal ethnic nationalities aren’t so much like demonic archetypes.”

“Yeah Orias. Everyone in the US has mixed heritage,” Harvey adds. “Mom’s family was from Wales just a few hundred years ago. And Grandpa Lionel was an illegal immigrant from Eloreph.”

“Yeah, Orias,” you say, taking over. “And personally, I like to consider myself a future Chthonian anyway. Also the Imperiate. Don’t get so technical.”

“I meant no disrespect,” he demurs.

You decide to let him slide this time, since Reeber has decided to seek affection from him once again. “So where exactly does David come into play with this whole Hafen place?” you ask.

“I cannot say,” says Orias. “Your mother had long been partial to the Germanics, and there was her association with your father, the Hellborn assassin. There were rumors he had the Imperiate’s ear, and beguiled her into gaining refuge for his people. But I suspect Hafen was overeager to establish its legitimacy. It probably spread half the rumors itself to tie itself to the Imperiate through her consort.”
>>
Should probably toss your trip back on, boss.

Consort. Were your parents even ever married? Does that matter when you’re talking about marginally-mortal folks who lived life on the wild side?

Wait. Corithis was like, five hundred years old. What if she’d been married before? What if she had kids before? What if you have like, a half-family someplace? Like, you know you’re her heir, but really, who cared about what her business was before she hit it big and became the Imperiate?

Maybe Orias is not the man to ask such questions. Or maybe he is.

Holding a fort makes sense. Holding it down implies the fort is rowdy, and may escape your grasp should you not forcefully keep it in place. Our house isn't likely to go anywhere, so there is no reason for it to be held down.

"Could care less" is completely misleading since it implies the person cares about something when they meant the opposite.

And "Safe Haven" is completely redundant, since a haven is by definition safe.
