You rouse yourself into the perpetual dawn of this particular dungeon layer- a vastly preferrable set of scenery to the previous.

You feel like very little would be less impressive than the weasel-infested waste of time that made up the prior layers.

But now you've had a rest amidst some gorgeous terrain, and enjoyed a leisurely meal of roast bear, your favourite. Life is good, and it can only get better! As long as your idea of better is to delve further into a dungeon. And fight giant things, for your own amusement.

Thankfully, that is, in fact, your idea of better.
So you're planning to really enoy the next few days.

Your friends are less enthusiastic, though if that's in regards to the dungeon or the waking up, you can't presently tell. Sheszka seems mostly alert, sitting up straight in a contained wolf-form, though she's swaying side to side as her eyes droop. Jin is... You can't actually tell. She might be awake? Jin is schrodinger's harpy. Youll throw her at someone, and they may or may not catch a facefull of star-burning bird girl.

Nin is Nin. One hundred percent over-eager moth herald.

The fact that you just thought of her as a herald shows how truly insidious she is.

Ezzy is comatose, and still kind of fat from the sheer amount of bear she managed to consume. She's also snoring and drooling, but that's fairly normal. You'd wake her, but the hissing is kind of adorable.

All in all, it's a beautiful and quiet morning, so it's definitely time to murder something.

We need to follow up on that idea of writing a Beastry/Diary/Cook Book.

Hell, we could put Nin on the job as our chronicler.

why do we even likes bears?
They're greasy and unpleasant.
I think lyra just likes bears because she is used to bears, as one would like peanutbutter and jelly on white bread far into adulthood due to its childhood connotations.
>>
>>45096312
I think she mainly likes the eating your own kill part really.
That and bear has to be super gamey, which for a monster with enough strength to just push her arm into the ground, probably means its the only meat that has any real resistance to it.

You don't need to wake everyone up to check the bridge.
It's not like the thing is a mimic or-

You cautiously poke the bridge from a good few metres away, prodding it harshly with your spear until you are well and truly satisfied that it is made of wood and not flesh-devouring monster.

It is, all in all, an utterly standard rope bridge.

Thick, sturdy planks are supported by massive strings of rope, stretching between floating islands over a red cast sea. it's a beautiful, idyllic scene, made all the worse by the creeping sensation that there's a monster here somewhere.

You step out into the abyss, the bridge swaying gently with your weight. Your legs clatter incessantly as you walk, eyes peeled and flicking in every direction as you watch for your foes. Your heart pounds harder and harder as you cross, passing the halfway line and closing in on the second island in the sky.

You breathe out a sigh of relief as you set foot on the solid ground of a magical floating rock.
And then you are attacked by a bush.

Well. It's something of a loaded statement.

You are ineffectively acosted by a bush?
A bush is attempting to bar your way, in an un-bush-like manner. It is actively attempt to stop you, rather than simply being a low growing fern that causes a minor change to the rhythm of your steps.

You pluck it from the ground with one hand, holding it up for a better look.

It's definitely a bush. Roots, limited branches, leaves. Eyes, little hissing mouth.

You hurl it into the sea without concern, and glance around the island for any more shrubbery related assaults.

Hmm, this is-

"Nin."

You poke the petite troublemaker.

"Nin. Wake up, yes."
The moth makes a vaguely grumbling-whining noise. You poke her again, prodding her cheek as her eyes start to blink rapidly.
"Nnnnooooo-"
"Up, yes. Why are you so tired, anwyay?"

"I work hard!" She protests sleepily.
"There is noone to announce me to, so no. Up."
She makes a final complaint as she shoves herself of your shell, dropping lightly to the groud with a yawn.
You repress your own before you cause some sort of feedback loop, as hard as it is.

"Today, you get to hunt for your food, yes."
She gives you a certain sort of look, one eyebrow rising.
"My lady, though I would follow any of thy commands- I eat plants."
"Then it is a good thing there are plant monsters, yes."

She looks on is disbelief as you check her weapon, leaving her staring out into space with a blade in hand.
"And no flying unless you are falling off the island. Work for your food."

It isn't long before you're enjoying the sight of a golden tinged moth dancing around a hissing plant thing,, swiping and stabbing a dodging.

"I'm not built for this! I'm a moth!"
"Yes? You are the natural predator of plants, yes. So you have an advantage."
"Plants don't bite back!"
You shrug.

Yes, all dice rolls are juust the base from which stuff gets modified according to our skil and the opponents. Thats why we couldn't beat Mom even on a nat100 way back, too much modifiers.

There is actually a lot going into it, REQM once did a thread where he laid out the mods for each roll and DCs, look into the archive.

>>
>>45097908

>>
>>45097908
Well, practically she should train with her hovering, but swordwork is even more important.
>>
The duel- In that there are two participants, not as in a rules-oriented murder party- continues unabated, heedless of the moth's lack of desire to fight for her breakfast.

Roots sprout upwards, spike-like, and Nin yelps as she hops backwards, a few thin red lines decorating her legs as she curses out the plant.

A second creeps forwards towards the fight, and you pin it disinterestedly with one leg, leaving a squirming pile of plant matter at the end of your foot.

Nin pirouettes- wings flicking to add that bit of speed to her movements- a vine snaps past her like a whip, and she lunges, blade leading, piercing the hissing little abomination and coating the blade in saplike blood.

A glance confirms it is all over your leg, too.

"Hah!"
She gloats for a split second- before her eyes flick to you, and she screws her expression into one of utmost 'how could I be so very put-upon, woe is me'-ness.

"That isn't going to work, you know."
"How could you do this to meee-"
"Exercise is good for you, yes."

She bitterly takes a leaf from the monster, chewing thoughtfully. And then she spits it out.
"Agh! gah! Bleh!"
"No good, then?"
"It's disgusting! Agh- It's all in my mouth! I can smell it!"
>>
>>45097970
She snatches the shield from your hands as soon as it's offered, gargling and spitting frantically as she tried to clear the thing from her mouth.
"Never! Never again!"
"No, I think you will have to fight at some point."
She sticks out her tongue.

You snap the leg with a pinned monster straight, sending it sailing away from you before you continue, a grumbling moth flitting along beside you.

"This is no way to treat your subjects."
"Then it is a good thing that you are my friend, yes."
"It's an even worse way to treat your friends!"

You flap your hand to wave her off and she huffs, indignant.
"A herald is a respectable position."
"Try being respectable then."
You sweep up the complaining insect, tucking her wings neatly beneath your arm as you set across the next bridge.

>Desert arachne fall into two categories, those who swiftly fall prey to the dangerous monsters inherent to the area, and those who survive and rapidly evolve into scorpion-halved monsters, and carve out their own piece of desert.

Well, it doesn't say the Scorpion evo is their second form, but it seems likely.

Given that the Scorpion evo is the "fuck this place is dangerous, I really need to work to survive" form, it's likely a bit tougher than our equivalent evo.
>>
>>45098522
A sun tan is a result of radiation (photons from the sun) instead of conduction (hot gas from a fire)
>>
>>45098557
Mainly because we don't know how all the elemental thematics work in this realm.
Afterall, attempting to use lightning on a river just ended with an explosion instead of electrifying everything.

If we can still get a tan then [Light] energy is probably a thing.

>>45098614
Yes anon, i know what a tan is caused by.
>>
>>45098639
>If we can still get a tan then [Light] energy is probably a thing.
No, because again, the mechanism that leads to tan has nothing to do with heat or fire, so immunity or resistance to fire (burning) has no impact on tanning at all whatsoever,
>>

>>45098762
It relys on the presumption that the reaction for tanning could occur under the pretenses that light resistance is a thing and that light is an energy type. Again, we don't know if it could or couldn't.

Really, it was a simple question to try work out one of the worlds mechanics, its kind of sad how it spiralled.

You stow your spear as you move, keeping it within reach but freeing your all importand hand.

Nin's complaints fade into a much more tolerable quiet as your hand finds her head, sweeping through her hair and sliding over the down-soft antennae.
The scenery is even better like this.

"This- This doesn't mean you win."
"Mhm."
"I'm still upset."
"Mmm."
"I mean it."
"Yes, yes. I will make it up to you."

A breeze casts your hair to one side, your bangs obscuring your vision as the braid trailing across your back shifts lightly.
"Did you take care of your legs already?"
"Mm- Eh. Yes. You didn't say no dust."
Her eyes are already halfway drooping, legs kicking idly at the air.

"That's good. Yes."
You increase your speed by a few notches.

You keep your distance, legs clattering to a halt as you circle the camp.

The residents are apparently aware enough that someone sticks their head through the fabric door of the tent, red hair obscuring eyes that are nearly the same colour with lack of sleep.

A hand follows the head out of the tent, pointing accusingly.

"Hey. Hey. Yyyyou. You can't be here. Safe zone."
You blink.
"Hello, yes."
"Safe zone. No cheating."
"I am not... cheating? I am walking."
>>
>>45099016
The sleep-zombie touches their finger to their nose, considering your words thouroughly.
"You're walking?"
"Yes."
"Talking, too?"
"That is what we are doing right now."

They stare again.
"You kidnapping her?"
"Hah?"
You glance to Nin.

"No, this one is mine, yes."
"Mmkay. I'm gonna- I gotta sleep."
"That is likeluy a good idea."
"Jacobs is guarding, though."
"That is nice."
"So don't try anything. Monster things."
"I will take it into consideration."

Was the first part of this dungeon the same for you as it was for us?
>>
>>45098998
Sure, I was in it.
Though I would count hat one more as funposting since the original idea "hydraulic muscles are more optimized" was quite silly to begin with, given we were already as strong as we are no matter what muscles, and fibre muscles would allow strength gain, which hydraulic muscles don't.
The arguing was too fun to let real logic get in to the way.

The entire level is in fact one giant trap to lure unsuspecting adventurers into napping so that the bushes can shrub them.

Speaking of being stuck in traps take a look at the trap that Elle has planned for Lyra in the future.

>>

Only if they have spiders in them.
>>
>>45099544

If I remember right, it wasn't the whole person part opening up, but the spider part immediately beneath them.

Which means early adventurers were afraid of being eaten by arachne vaginas.

...though considering our parents' "activity", that was probably a valid fear.

You set up shop.
Bear shop.

A much better shop than weapons shop, or potions shop.

You hijack the pre-built firepit, though it is in dire need of expansion. It just so happens that you are a connoisseur of fire and earth. A cooking pit expert.

You expand the base, shore up the walls and raise a spit, all in the name of the god of hunger. Meat roasts gently on the open fire, thickly scented smoke billowing up into the sky as you sit with your moth.

The scent is enough to rouse your friends, slow as it may be. And the smoke is enough to bring 'Jacobs' back to camp, a crossbow-wielding dwarf arriving at the fire to stare at the crowd of monsters that have taken over the safe-zone.

"'Ey."
"Hello, yes."
"Not eatin' anyone I know, right?"
"Are you friends with bears?"
"Bears?"
"Large woodland creatures, yes."
"Nah."

Jin and Sheszka dutifully ignore the man in favour of food, utterly silent save for the sounds of a massive creature slowly disappearing.
"Yer the spider, then?"
"The Queen!"
"I am a spider. And not a queen."
"She is."
"Ignore the moth, yes."

He looks at you both askew, clearly of two minds on the whole subject. So you change it.
"Did you know I was here?"
"Eh? Yah, the guild sent a notice down."
Your eyebrows raise in surprise.
"A magic message?"

He laughs.
"Nah, they sent a group ahead of you with a warning. Probably magically exspensive, though."
"Well, that's... one way, I suppose."
"Th'best way, really. What'd happen if we all wound up fighting?"
"You'd lose?"
He laughs again.

"Oh. Yer not kidding?"
"Only a little. I don't fight people much."
"Really?"
"Bandits don't bother arachne."
"That seems fair."
"Mhm."

Your friends have finished eating, and are now embracing their wider, rounder lifestyle.
"Laps, yes. Around camp."
Both look at you pleadingly, but you don't budge till they're on their feet. Or wings.
>>
>>45099850
You cough.
"Have you been in this dungeon before? What's it like?"
"Too much fire. It's alwas good when you see this floor. Y'need a break."
"Fire?"
"Little fires, big fires, bitey fires."

"Shifts up, J- What."
"Quinn."
"It's a spider."
"Pretty sure it's a girl, y'know. G'night then."
"Are you just gonna leave me with-"
"Tired."

The woman- short cropped brown hair, green eyes and a heavy looking shield in hand- stares awkwardly across the fire.
"So, uhhh. How're the, uh. Monster things."
"Very good, yes. How are the human things."
"Very human. Completely human."
"Fascinating."
"Yup."

"The dungeon, yes?"

"The- The dungeon?" She replies, staring at you as you start to shake Ezzy, gently bringing her snoring hisses into louder, more irate hisses.
"Mhm. I heard there was fire."
"Yeah. Pretty much all fire."

You nod, ignoring the reptile attempting to grapple your hands.
"I have not seen any, yes.
"Huh?"

You look down.
"Ezzy."
"Whyyyy-"
"You have slept all day, yes. You need to train."
She glowers innefectually.
"None of that. Training."

She hisses as she slithers away. You trust she'll do what she needs to.
"So, fire?"
"Uh. Yeah. The whole dungeon?"
"All I saw was wheat? And weasels."
"Weasels?"

You nod.
"Small, biting rodents."
"The monsters in the field?"
"Yes."
"We burned them."
"You burnt the field?"
"Yes."

You tilt your head.
"Is that where the fire elementals come from?"
"What. Really?"
"I have fought weasels and bugs and a bear. No fire."
The woman starts to curse.

Is this why they call this the dungeons of gold and hate? Because it appears as either a bountiful field or a hellscape depending on the adventurers actions.

A clever dungeon, when you think about it; it tantalizes the rash AND the cautious.

Almost every monster in here can probably claim fire as a weakness, and it's full of vegetation that just SCREAMS "Hey, I might be home to a shit ton of monsters. Wanna play it safe?"

So, you hold back, and ya make it through with no fuss.

Huh, fire trap kinda thematically supports "level 2 is sizechanged level 1" theory.

Setting fire to the first field is easy and "safe".
Setting fire to a forest of giant wheat that surrounds you on all sides - not so much.
So it seems to me that in order to maintain the theme, level 2 would need to be a burned hellscape of glowing embers left from level 1 blaze.
