Mortals. The ever-necessary cog in the wheel that is the Spirit World. Mortals feed the Spirit World with Belief, which turns into Madness and Ectoplasm, the energy source for Spirits like you.

This is where you come in, Spectre, an agent of the Bureau of the Paranormal. Your job is to keep the mortals feeding the Spirit World, while also cleaning up the various supernatural messes that occur.

As a being of pure ectoplasm, you were never part of the Material World, and so you cannot manifest directly without using a tremendous amount of energy. Often times this would use more energy than it gained, which is bad for business.

This is why The Bureau of the Paranormal has assigned you Haunters, ghosts and entities more easily accessible to the Material Plane. Its your job to use these Haunters to gather belief while keeping certain mortals in the dark about your existence. It wouldn't do well to bring a horde of Ghost Busters or Psychic Mediums to hunt you and put you all in jars.

You currently have five Haunters at your disposal. Their dossiers can be found here:

And as always, what's a good haunting without proper music?

You've just accepted your next assignment: a paranormal investigation that two ghost masters before you have pulled out due to a high concentration of psychics, mediums, and ghost hunters making the area a hot zone.

Your mission, as you already have accepted it, is to see what is making the mortals so interested in the area, while ensuring the mortals do not capture your haunters, or even physical evidence of your haunters.

Now,

Do you return to the Haunted Mansion to meet with your subordinates,

Or have them meet you at the haunting site?

You decide to not interrupt your Haunters while they were resting. They would arrive in time, you needn't micromanage them. You send out a pulse of energy on the aetheric winds, telling your haunters to meet you at the site.
It doesn't take long to manifest at the site, traveling is something the living have to worry about. Hell, time itself is something only the living have to worry about most of the time. The dead did things in their own time, after all, what did the dead have but an abudance of it?
Your arrival at the site is merely an effort of will, and you decide to survey the haunting scene before your Haunters arrived. Unfortunately, the sight before you leaves much to offer. A single, solitary manhole, with unintelligible graffiti written all around it. The only thing discernable are the words, "Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here" written sloppily in chalk.
Around the manhole is a buzz of activity. Video footage, cameras, various vehiciles, many bearing different names such as "Ghost Chasers" and "Mysterious Hauntings." Many of the groups are arguing over something or other, you don't bother listening in.
Luckily, the air is thick with plasm, and you feel the groups of mortals milling around in the tunnels below.

You venture your consciousness down below. Down the manhole that has garnered so much attention is a network of twisting tunnels and caves. Three groups of people can be sensed wandering around, you feel the electromagnetic frequencies in the air being given off by their equipment. Mortals had so many toys to try and record the dealings of spirits.

Still, you venture your consciousness closer, and discern the first of the three groups. Recording for a show called "Paranormal Detectives." All males, this group. They are asking questions to the darkness, recording what the mortals refer to as EVP, trying to communicate with the spirit world.

Another group, a group of three males and one female, seem to be setting up stationary cameras at various junctions in the twisting tunnels.

The final group causes you to keep your distance. Two males filming one female, who seems to be wandering around blindly. What gives you pause is the clear psionic pulse rippling through the plasm band. You will have to be careful with this one. Mediums are seldom easily scared.

All three mortal groups seem to not have ventured too far from the manhole entrance, but you sense something.... deeper in the catacombs. For a moment you think you sense more mortals, but then... nothing. Looking deeper is like looking into a shadow, a strange occurence in the paranormal world. There shouldn't be anything able to obscure a Ghost Master's vision. Nothing the Bureau doesn't know about, anyway. Perhaps this is what you were sent to investigate? Perhaps this is what scared the other Ghost Masters away from this job?

You decide to focus on the mortals, figuring that building up some plasm would help you investigate that veil of shadow below.

You notice the first group is still recording EVP. You could take advantage of this, and rake in a good supply of plasm. The same could be said of showing off a bit for the camera. Good amounts of plasm could be gained, perhaps even some gold, but giving mortals even shreds of paranormal evidence is considered in bad taste. Of course, dire circumstances do call for unorthodox appraoches. Perhaps the Bureau could be convinced that these tactics were necessary if your bid pays off.

Of course, there is always the standard haunting tactics, bureau approved but with less overall gain.

You decide to haunt the mortals with more traditional means. No sense in giving the mortals exactly what they want, not when they were ever so exploitable.
You survey your surroundings, and a number of ideas come to you.
Hector could be of use in the tunnels, with his ability to manifest different things. He could be used for voices and shadows. The air is stale, and you cannot bind Gale, but you could use her up top. Nixie could be bound to some of the lower levels where the water starts to rise, and Skitter is more or less in his element down here.
What do you do first, Spectre?

"Skitter." you call out to the aether. Your ever loyal Ecto Spider manifests at your side. The tunnel is only barely wide enough to support his bulk, his legs disappearing into the rock walls. It was handy being a spiritual being. The rules of matter applied to the living.

You feel his anticiaption, the tunnels appeal to a spider like him. Dark, enclosed, perfect. Your ecto spider is in his element as he immediately spins some plasm into an ecto web along the tunnels.

You look around to the mortals again, the males were still trying to record EVP, taking turns talking to the camera. The other group of mortals, featured the girl talking to the camera about their stationary watch points. Surely spiders shouldn't raise much alarm if caught on camera. Of course, there's still the medium, but a Ghost Master of your Caliber knows a Horde-type Haunter is out of his element against a Medium.

The mortals have a saying, "Low hanging fruit." Mortals always had sayings, and this one seemed to apply. The girl was standing in front of the main camera, while the men were setting up the stationary ones.

"We're recording here withing the Deadman's Tunnels, a haunt of ill repute said to lead the wayward deep into the ground where they never return to the surface. Our insider report from the police states that the last group of paranormal investigators, Channel 3's very own 'Haunted Mysteries' crew, ventured down these very tunnels two weeks ago. Nobody's heard from them since, and its our job here at Supernatural Revealed, to find out what happened. Now I'm sure most of our viewers have heard, the Deadman's Tunnels have been abandoned for years. It's said that the project was abandoned after the architect was driven insane, digging twisting, winding tunnels down to nowhere, and that the only people brave enough to regularly brave the dangers of the unfinished tunnels, were Satanic Cults who met in secret..."

The droning of the mortals bores you, and you signal Skitter to get into position. You saw the small spiders manifest in the material world, drawing no attention from the mortals as they stuck to the shadows. You feel the drain on the plasm band as Skitter works his brood, and are rewarded with a fresh influx of fear as the spiders descended from the ceiling on monofilament strands that reflected in the spotlights. The girl screamed first, followed by the others as the spiders clouded the lit field of vision.

You let the fresh plasm roll over you as the humans tear from their position, screaming about spider nests as they leave their equipment abandoned in an effort to escape Skitter's children.

Ever the strategist, you think to your next move.

You set Skitter's plasm band and let him roam after the group with random spider scares. You trusted his judgement. The plasm band steadily fills as Skitter doesn't relent, causing the humans to think they encountered some sort of infestation. It mattered not. Regardless of their rationalizations, all you cared about was their plasm. You get more than you thought, on account of the screams of the first group echoing and unnerving the other groups. An added bonus, you suppose.

You take some of the newly infused plasm, and ventured further down the tunnels, venturing deep enough where the water was abundant enough to bind Nixie. "Nixie." you call out, and the river spirit manifests floating near you.
"Yes, ghost master?" she says in that bubbly, lyrical tone of hers.
"Sing us a song." you command, setting her plasm band.

The eerie, haunting music of the river spirit echoes through the caverns. You notice it unnerve the mortals who hear it and resist the call, and those that fall prey to it, three men. Seems one from each group suddenly turns and ventures down toward the haunting music, raising alarm from their companions in their dreamy state.

The plasm band fills even further with fear, and you relish the taste of the fresh energy, even a bit of madness... but wait. With your consciousness so far down, you notice something deeper in the shadow. The definite scent of mortals, and... a wealth of madness that you cannot tap into. A venerable fountain of madness energy, being absorbed into something else.

You decide that it was your duty to investigate the mortal signature. You venture down into the edges of the shadow over the deeper tunnels, and find what appear to be two mortal signatures. You have trouble focusing on them, they appear to be in one place at one moment, and then as soon as they turn a corner, they arrive somewhere different.

Maze of Madness. An ability only available to the most powerful of haunters. It twisted perception, space, and time. An ability that required massive amounts of plasm to use, which would be no problem since it generated more than massive amounts. Mortal minds did not take kindly to spacial displacement. Thinking you went through one door, or around one corner, to find yourself somewhere entirely different. The mortals you sense clearly are fully into realm of madness, wandering aimlessly through the lower corridors via the light of their video cameras. Occasionally they will stop and turn to each other. One is still sane enough to be afraid, the other keeps laughing.

"It's like a game, you know?" says the mad one. "How long can we survive down here?"
"I told you to shut the fuck up." says the saner one, though his madness was more subtle. Still substantial, but each mortal's madness was different. This one's insanity rolled off of him like smoke. "We're going to get out of here, you understand me?" Ahh, there it was. Hope. Some mortals clung to it as tightly as an ant to a leaf in a flood.
"Hehehehehe," the mad one chuckled, "How long do you think it's been? Days? Months?"
"I SAID SHUT THE FUCK UP."'
"...Years?"
"I swear to god..."
"Do you remember the last time we ate something that wasn't rat?"

The answer is cut off, from a loud skittering and the sound of scraping claws down the tunnel. The two mortals turn to look toward the sound of the noise, but even you cannot see their origin.

"Dinner is here, hyehehehehh..."

"Hector. Skitter. Nixie. Dream Eater."
One by one, you call your haunters to you. The only one you can't summon is Gail. Combat between spirits is a rather tame affair. Spirits can only be as powerful as the energy you feed them. The more powerful spirits consume the energy of the lesser powerful, which is more or less how beings who feed on spirit energy survive. Smaller spirits do not last long in the spirit world, and are soon taken for every bit of energy they have until they dissipate into raw plasm. Your haunters manifest, and you are confident that you can at least hold your own against whatever is there, of course. The other entity seems to be drawing off of the pool of raw madness. Luckily, you can feed off of some of it yourself in such close proximity to the source: the mad mortals.

The skittering and clawing grow louder in the depths of the tunnels, and grow to a crecendo before a wave of rats burst forth into your vision. They obscure the floor before washing over the mortals with their crawling, stinging swarm. The mortals, however, do not react at all as normally, which is to be expected with the amount of madness they're giving off. Instead, they take to the swarm headstrong, stomping on every rat they can. Given the density of the swarm, they cannot help but smash many.

Even you are surprised when admist the smashing, the mad one reached down to pick up the carcass of a bleeding rat, and then takes a bite. The mortal chews visibly, blood running down his mouth before swallowing the raw rat, fur and bones and all. The saner one proves his own madness as he follows suit.

What further seems strange even to a Ghost Master like you, is the fact that the rats bear the same aetheric signature as Skitter's brood. Meanwhile, a pair of red eyes catches your glimpse. The gaze in the dark seems to not notice you, fixatured purely on the mortals.

You decide to intervene. An unsanctioned haunter fixating on a group of mortals is hardly something you can condone. You had no idea what this new entity would do if you allowed it to get at the mortals. Not to mention, you could not afford to let it consume more energy.

You plant yourself firmly between the entity and the mortals on the aetheric plane. "Enough!" you call out to the entity.

A nightmare visage ventures out of the haze in your vision. A rat monster unlike any other, considering some of your best friends were nightmare visages. A monster of legend stands before you, and clearly the source of the disturbace you were sent to investigate. A scratchy, hollow voice rings out in the spirit world.

"Who... defies... the Rat King?"

Clearly he doesn't know who you are, Ghost Master.
You're The Spectre Surpreme.
