You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division with the unique role of an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

Your investigation in the Human World's Berlin is approaching an end. Your mission is to find a human capable of using Kido, a person that you've learned has the name 'Shinji'. From what you understand, the list of suspects has been narrowed down to three people, all siblings from the same family, though none of them have that name. Perhaps they've changed it, though why they would do that, you do not know. You're still missing something important, but even so, there's no time to waste.

"One of them must be Shinji. We just need to figure out who." You tell Moeka. Your partner nods vigorously, gripping the sheath of her sword in an attempt to contain her excitement at the upcoming action.

"Finally... So close..!" She mutters with a smirk on her face. "But, uh... How do we figure it out?"

"We can show ourselves. Whoever sees us must be the one."

"What if all of them can see us?" Moeka raises a fair point. This city has at least three spiritually aware humans and there's no guarantee that there can't be more. It's very unlikely, but not impossible. If all three siblings share spiritual awareness, the trait loses value as an indicator to the identity of Shinji. Another complication, but it's still possible to figure things out on the go.

"It seems that we'll have to provoke a response again." You say. Mistakes are something you can't afford to make from now on, but at the same time, it seems that you can't avoid taking risks, either.

You have the address of the sibling named Erwin, so you head there right away to investigate him as well. It's an apartment on the fifth floor. The curtains are closed, obstructing vision from the outside, but lights are on. You're pretty sure that someone is home.

"So, are we going in, Ryouta-kun? Do you want to try sneaking in, or should we just go in swords blazing?" Moeka asks, leaving the plan to you, her wide smile beaming in anticipation. "It'll be pretty embarrassing if we break in like really cool guys only to find out that nobody could see us... Like arriving to the wrong party..."

...You can't say that's something you're concerned about right now.

...

>"I'll go in first. If I identify Shinji, I'll use the Denreishinki to notify you. Then you can make a sneak attack while I distract him."

Even though this has been really rough I really hope you're not planning on scrapping the mystery investigating angle completely. Because Ryouta's personal issues? That's an even bigger mystery that we don't really have any clues on how to solve, and if we just focused on that things would get pretty rough.

If she has any kind of illusion based zanpakuto it would be better to send her in first, however if it is an attack type it would be best for us to be first so that we can make a proper deduction.

Are our orders to execute him, or capture him and bring him to soul society for interrogations? Which, I guess we'd have to kill him to do that...

I think maybe making a list of clues in pastebin might help, and linking that.

You're going in first. Your special skill should make it much easier to identify Shinji if he's there. Though, before you go, you want to clarify something with Moeka.

"My Shikai? Well, uh..." She suddenly hesitates. "It's... not gonna help much in there, Ryouta-kun. And, well, even activating it is going to give me away, you know? I'm not so good at controlling my spiritual power that I won't get sensed if I release it."

But you'd still like to know what to expect if she does need to release it. Moeka plants her hands on her hips, contemplating with a disgruntled look on her face, as if trying her best to keep herself from saying something to the extent of 'none of your business'.

"...It's, like... It's a magnetic sword. It lets me throw around metallic things." She laughs a bit. "Pretty lame, huh?"

Well, it can probably come in handy in a pinch. You never know. But hopefully, the battle won't last long enough for it to be a concern, if there even will be a battle.

"What about your Shikai, Ryouta-kun?" Moeka asks. You tell her that you don't have one, at which she stares at you in wide-eyed surprise, but then sheepishly smirks. Now that you think about it, Moeka seems more skilled than she might appear at a glance. Knowing your sword's name is a sign of experience at the very least. "I honestly thought you were way better at this than me, Ryouta-kun. Ahaha!"

It's time for you to go. You approach not through the window, but using a more ordinary path - up the stairs of the apartment complex and through the front door of the flat. Your footsteps silent, hand on the hilt of your Zanpakuto, you move through the entry corridor, your ears picking up the trails of a conversation. The door into the living room is open, the lights on. Inside are two people, a young woman and a young man sitting on a sofa and apparently reading a book - both of them you recall seeing on the photos in Martin Kramer's house.

(1/2)
>>
>>45111679
"-...She really likes you. You wouldn't believe how often I caught her not paying attention to what I was saying whenever you were around!" The young woman with long black hair - Maria Kramer - laughs, teasing her brother. Her eyes are closed.

"...How did we end up there again? Hey, if you don't care about this novel, I can just stop reading." The brother - Erwin Kramer - replies, a sour look on his face. Erwin's hair is short, curly, and with a brown tint to its color. His age is about the same as your apparent one - late teens.

"She's a bit older than you, but age is just a number in love, isn't it? Come on, don't you like her at all?" She keeps it up, unfazed by the threats. A grunt and the closing of a book force her to give up a little ground. "Aw, come on, I'm just kidding! I just haven't seen her in a while... Jessica's not answering the phone anymore, either. I hope nothing happened..." The sister sighs, laying her head on her younger brother's shoulder.

"...I'm sure she's fine, Maria." He tries to assure her. Somehow, he doesn't sound convinced. He turns away, glancing at the doorway - right at you. The boy's eyes widen. "We... left the window open..." He mutters something to that extent to his sister. You think there's a window behind you, but it's closed. Is he just trying to make up an excuse for having looked your way?

But you can clearly tell that he's looking at you, and not through you.

Have you finally found him?

A small clarification to Bakudo #1!

New version:
>Bakudo #1 - Sai, E Rank. Reduces all of the target's attributes by one Rank for the duration of the spell. This does not affect the REIA value of the target, or the SPI value of the target when it's used to defend against the bind. If the user has REIA of one Rank higher than the target, it completely immobilizes the target. Does not require an incantation.

Previous version:
>Bakudo #1 - Sai, E Rank. Reduces all of the target's attributes by one Rank for the duration of the spell. If the user has REIA of one Rank higher than the target, it completely immobilizes the target. Does not require an incantation.

True and we still maintain our threats and demeanor regardless.

So far we know only the male can see us and thus he is the most likely suspect in this scenario, however the female cannot be discounted either.

With both bound, we can begin an interrogation and should enough duress be placed on one or the other, I assume an answer or resolution would come out be it an accusation of the other, a name and location to another sibling, a confession, etc.

Ideally we would interrogate in separate rooms, however the current situation dictates that we make this a duet.

Without another word, you make a gesture and declare the name of the very first Bakudo spell. Erwin makes to suddenly stand, but as he does, his arms and legs spasm in protest, gravity crudely forcing him face-downwards towards the ground. He props his head up on his chin, his teeth clenched.

"Erwin..?" Maria turns to where her brother lies on the carpeted floor, her eyes still closed. "Did you fall down? What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

She gets off the sofa and crouches down, her hands sliding along the floor, soon reaching the young man's body. "I don't... know..." He hisses out, rivulets of sweat streaming down his face. Maria tries to help him up, but your spiritual energy prohibits it. You draw your sword.

Your free hand goes for the flip cellphone, with which you send a message to your partner. Just as you press the button, you realize that something is amiss - the slight mental tension from needing to maintain a spell is absent. Your eyes dart back to the teenager, your sword arm already in motion to prevent his actions.

Erwin mimics your gesture and words, his voice hateful and dire. Bakudo #1 weighs down on your shoulders, trying to lump your limbs together; but you're not driven to helplessness because of it, you can resist it. The sudden weight throws your slash off, allowing his wrist to stay attached to the arm; but it is still cut deeply, and for a human, this kind of blood loss is going to eventually result in death. The young man screams and crawls back, brushing his sister aside. He struggles back up to his feet.

Erwin's Attributes:
>STR: -
>END: -
>AGI: -
>SPI: C
>REIA: E (D)
>Humans possess attributes with the "-" value, indicating their inability to compete with spiritual beings without the use of special powers. The numerical number of a "-" value is 1, it is not modified by REIA and it cannot affect with spirits. This is the human average.

You drop the Denreishinki and assume a firmer grip on your sword. Erwin tries to make a dash for a bookshelf in the room, but he can't reach it under the pressure of your sword's arcs. His clumsy, pained stumbling is no match for your polished footwork. Even with the weight of his focused spiritual pressure trying to bring down your body, you are still faster than he is. Up this close, the seemingly negligible difference speaks in volumes.

You draw a gash across his chest, your blade sliding along the bones of his ribcage. Blood sprays out of the cut, painting the white walls a dark crimson.

You spot Moeka finally arriving through a wall in the corner of your vision, her sword bare. She takes a second to understand her surroundings; in that second, the young magician falls down. Even so, your sword relentlessly thrusts at his already wounded chest. Erwin foolishly tries to defend himself with his arm, but the limb is cut through as if it wasn't there. The tip of your sword firmly lodges itself inside his vitals.

The blind girl touches her pale face stained with red. No words, no incantations will leave her brother's lips anymore - only blood. The teenager's eyes glare at a black book on the shelf he was grasping for with a lamenting stare. But this is the end. Even without you delivering a final blow, he'll bleed to death soon.

"Is he the guy?" Moeka asks, looking at the two siblings. She has to force her eyes away from the silent sister and keep them on the skewered brother. The redhead heaves a heavy sigh. "I guess you... gotta finish the job."

Maria mutters something, her hands again shuffling along the floor, and yet they only find more blood spread along the carpet. Her movements attract Moeka's attention, but your partner immediately turns away once she realizes what the other girl is doing.

"Just... take his dam soul out, we'll talk outside. I wanna leave already!" Moeka yells.

It doesn't hurt to try, at the least we can temporarily stop the bleeding long enough to interrogate him and give him some hope to cling onto yet still maintain high level threat status.

Interrogate, threaten to continue the heal/harm cycle if he refuses to yield any additional information.
I have a feeling he's not the only one responsible.

As for why not just ask his spirit? Good question, but I can promise you he's pretty attached to his body and life and can use that as a bargaining chip pretty effectively especially since people don't want to get his sister involved in any capacity.

>>45114728
This is another good point for healing, however I believe the paper seals still have effect and potency when the caster dies as they are affected by spirit pressure at the time of casting I believe. The caster dying should not release them otherwise he would have had to remain completely concentrated on each and every one at all times in order to maintain control.

We already have enough evidence to know its him. There's no need to interrogate him. And interrogation, especially torture, is not reliable anyway.

You take the sword out of his body only to thrust it in again, this time right through the heart. Erwin goes limp, his pained convulsions ceasing. He can no longer feel the cold sensations of blood rapidly leaking out of his body, and he no longer has to bear the feeling of the nerves mangled by your sharp blade.

You grab the black book and hand it to Moeka for safekeeping.

The soul manifests shortly after his death, the translucent shape of the teenager's body laid down next to his deceased body. As he regains consciousness, the pale figure springs up and gasps for air. You sever the chain still meaninglessly linking the two entities together; the body is beyond recovery, so even healing Kido won't help it now. You grab the newly formed soul by the collar and drag it towards a wall, phasing right through. The sensation of freefall from the fourth floor forces out a scream from the spirit, though you slow down just as you're about to hit the ground.

But after that, you're not gentle with your release of the magician, letting him fall down those last remaining two or three feet without any support. His body drops onto the snow covered ground. The chain sticking out of his chest clatters loudly as it does the same.

"It takes time for a soul to get used to being dead. For a while, you'll find it hard to breathe and move. Don't even bother trying to use Kido - it won't work. You can still die again." You warn him. Erwin crawls around on his knees, struggling to lift up his body under its new, strange weight. His breathing is wild and hungry, trying to force air into lungs that are simply refusing it. Even so, he makes to speak.

"Dead..? Maria... she... What did you do?!" He screams at you. Moeka drops down from above, the book still in her hands. You take it from her and open it. "She... she can't do anything without me! Why?!"

The contents of the tome are interesting. They're chock full of formulae, incantations and descriptions of Kido spells. But even with all of this knowledge, an average human stands no chance at performing even the simplest spell. The book itself looks old, at least a century so. It's like a magical grimoire... but there's more to it than just that. Some pages aren't written with just ink, but using pure spiritual energy, in a language that you can't recognize, but suspect to be just gibberish.

Demon Binding Tome
>A grimoire that tames demons. Through this book, the user may channel an ability that forcibly instills the will of the user into a Hollow. The user may bind a Hollow with REIA equal to their own, or may make mental suggestions to Hollows stronger than that. The user may maintain the bind on an amount of Hollows equal to the user's SPI Rank. Somehow reminiscent of a Hollow ability.
>Rank: C
>Type: Binding
>Range: 50
>Maximum Targets: Up to SPI

There's no doubt about it anymore, is there?

"If you touch me, I'll... let the monsters out. All... All five of them! If you leave me like this, I really will do it! I don't care how many people die!" Erwin screams. "I'll really..."

That might be a problem. His control must still be holding the Hollows at bay, either because of the book or because the book is linked to his spirit rather than to his body. Even if you call for backup now, they'll still take time to reach the Hollows after they break out, wherever they may be hidden. Casualties are practically unavoidable. His threat is, unfortunately, valid. But your mission ends as soon as he is out of this world, regardless of the consequences that may bring.

The situation here is quite simple - either he tells you where the Hollows are, or his sister dies. Erwin's fingers dig into the snow at that ultimatum, but he does his best to appear unfazed.

"So... so what? Do you think I'm scared of that? I'll really do it! Just..." As he continues on with that, you turn away, walking back towards the apartment. "W-wait! Stop! Don't..! I was just kidding! I'll..."

You do stop, turning back around. It seems that a small feint like that was enough to shatter his pretense.

"I'll show you where. Just don't touch her." The teenager finally manages to stand properly. But just as he does, you hear a distinct beeping sound. Your Denreishinki is still up on the fourth floor inside that apartment; it's Moeka's device that's going off.

"There are... two Hollows! What the heck, Ryouta-kun? What's this guy saying?!" Moeka exclaims, showing you the display. You see a third detected signature crop up on the screen, near the Kramer mansion. Distant roars erupt from all around, overwhelming even the whistling winter wind.

A dreadful realization crawls over Erwin's face. "I... lost control? They're... They're getting out on their own! I-I didn't mean to! I swear I didn't! It's not my fault! Don't hurt Maria!"

If what he's saying is true, then there's no reason for you to hurt her. It's not an implausible assumption that he lost focus after getting killed, or perhaps from the stress he's experienced, letting the Hollows wrestle back their free wills out of his grasp. Either way, there'll be a better time to ask him questions, and it isn't now.

"Moeka, call reinforcements."

"There's no time for that, Ryouta-kun! Come on, we can handle it ourselves! They're all separated, so we can take them on real easily!" She protests, looking rather eager. "And think of the bonuses we'll get!"

She might be right. Three Hollows, all split up like that... You might finish them off in the time it takes the reinforcements to get here. But even so, you insist that she calls them, just in case. "And also, tell them that the target is being sent to Soul Society."

"Fine, fineee..." Moeka starts tapping buttons on her phone. All that remains is the magician. There's no time to escort him to SS yourself, so you'll do it through a Konso. As you lift up your sword, Erwin collapses onto the snow again, crawling away, going on and on about how it wasn't his fault. You try to bring down the hilt onto his forehead, but your arm is stopped by the redhead.

"Wait, Ryouta-kun. Look over there!" Your partner points somewhere, diverting your attention. Try as you might, you don't really see anything. You're about to ask the girl what she meant, but then you spot a pale blue light flashes in the corner of your vision. ...Where Erwin's soul once was, there is now nothing.

"...What did you do, Moeka?" You ask.

"Soul Burial. Pretty basic stuff, you know? Heh heh heh..." The girl, smiling mischievously, replies, a hand on her hip. You still don't really understand her intentions here. "What are you looking at me like that for? You were going to do it anyway, right? Come on, we have Hollows to slay. There's extra cash in it for us... And lives to be saved! Tell us how we'll do it! We're a great team, and you're a really smart and skilled guy, so this'll be a piece of cake!"

...

>We'll split up to cover more ground.
>We'll attack each Hollow together.
>Taking care of this doesn't fall under your jurisdiction. Your mission is over; head back to Soul Society.
>Other. (Write-in).

>We'll attack each Hollow together.
This bitch wants to take the whole bounty instead of sharing.
>>

>We'll attack each Hollow together.

She is setting a trap. There was clearly something more to this and she's trying to sweep it under the rug.
She did not send that call either.
>>
>>45117921
Goddamnit he got killed by a quincy before we could give him a soul burial. That means we DID fail to solve the mystery, and Moeka betrayed us, but we don't know that in-character. That's never fun.
>>
>>45117921
>We'll attack each Hollow together.
Make sure she's still willing to split the bounty on the magician. We need that money for best mom.
>>
>>45118069
>killed by a quincy
The light was from a Soul Burial!

You know, Moeka, you were okay.

Now I want to beat you half to death.
>>
>>45118069
Where are you getting that he was killed by a Quincy from?
>>
>>45117921
Say we'll split up, but in reality call reinforcements. We work for Urahara and soak up knowledge like a sponge. We know what a Quincy attack looks like.
>>
>>45118109
Do we get the bounty for killing him or for the soul burial?
>>
>>45118145
It was a soul burial.
>>
>>45118109
I've never seen konso be used as a ranged attack, and it leaves motes behind like slaying a hollow.
>>
>>45118007
She just wants all the money anon.
>>
>>45118203
I'm not those guys who are flinging Quincy shit around

But I like to shadowrun

Moeka has been subtly probing us for information on our capabilities, and trying to make herself look like a pretty big slouch, she also takes our attention away from something just to do it herself? It's fishy, to say the least, and alarming to some.

She's obviously going to stab us in the back.

Though not really, but conspiracy theories are fun.

Ryouta's mission was to determine the identity of the Kido user. Everything besides that, including sending the guy off, is optional!

Usually, when a Hollow is slain, the kill is attributed to whoever dealt the final blow! There generally aren't bounties on regular Plusses - this is a one of a kind situation - so the exact rules may not be as clear as with Hollows!

>>45118215
Ryouta was standing very close to Erwin when Moeka distracted him!
>>
>>45118332
But does Moeka have her sword out,? You need the hilt to do it.
>>
>>45118332
Why do you end everything, literally everything with an exclamation point?

I don't know if I should read it as inexplicably excited or constantly yelling.

if you guys are that worried about money despite it not really being our characters MO, I'm sure we could contest matters when we get back and report our findings. And I'm sure 12 has a better way to closely monitor things.
>>
>>45118413
It's not the money, it's the principle.
>>
>>45118383
Moeka did have her sword out! She never sheathed it, sorry if I didn't make that clear!

>>45118383
I feel excited about running Quests!

And I want you to feel excited too!!
>>
>>45118413
We only want the money to get Shiori a house closer to Seireitei. Not OOC at all.
>>
>quest ends before battle
godamn it
oh well at least friday should be neat

thanks for running, hope we can do something about his sister else she's going to end up slipping on all that blood and brain herself
>>
>>45118413
Honestly I'm more worried about being overwhelmed on our own.
>>
>>45118593
Then we better git gud

If the hollows he was containing are, as the spell says, of lower power than him, than it should be no issue as we have proven we have a higher pressure.

I'm sure we can also utilize the spell book to pacify them and then execute them at our leisure to boot if not get them to kill each other.
>>
>>45118413
>letting people walk over you
She's suspicious as fuck, and is at the very least greedy and backstabbing. Plus, MC does want money.
>>
>>45118961
the most we can do is mention her behavior in our reports on top of what central has already observed

there's not much that can be done about it right now

I will say that we should open up being quite cross with her for stealing him away before we could finish our questioning.
>>
>>45119017
What's really suspect is that the dude didn't babble or struggle at all when she did it, but when we were going for it he was fussing about.

We would have heard him dragging himself along the snow if he was backing away from her as well.
>>
>>45119068
You're really reading into it too much anon
>>
>>45119017
We were literally seconds away from performing konso on him personally. Learn to read.
>>
>>45119104
Remember, anon, you only have to be right once to justify paranoia.

Additionally, it's better to be paranoid and wrong than trusting and wrong.
>>
>>45119167
Your paranoia makes no sense though. Mushroom explicitly stated that she performed the soul burial.
>>
>mention this shit in our report
>paid a visit from her captain
>you sayen shit bout waifu squad? my harem is top tier. TOP
>>
>>45119271
>trusting the QM explicitly

>ever

You know he wouldn't tell us she was a traitor, right? He may even actively misdirect us.

It's better to be paranoid and wrong, anon. Because if she isn't bad, okay, laugh it off, make fun of us. If she -is- bad and everyone decided she was trustworthy, we'd get fucked pretty hard.

The same reason you should always look both ways when crossing a street, even if you don't hear any cars, are on a rural road, or its the time of day when no one drives. Because you only need to fuck up once.
>>
>>45119334
Sure, I trust her less because she might be trying to claim the bounty all for herself, but suspecting anything more than that is just moronic
>>
>>45119511
Maybe, but I'd rather be a safe moron, than a dead genius.
