You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

"This feels a bit tight." You frown as you try to move around in your new Centauri Accord Navy issued uniform. One of those embarrassing form fitting things. It's not that it felt uncomfortable or anything, but you kind of felt naked, even when wearing it. Plus it pretty much revealed your entire body shape.

"That's because it's still brand new. Once you break it in you practically won't notice it all." Frolaytia chuckles, taking a little puff from her pipe. "These uniforms are made from next generation, low friction polymers, so chafing and discomfort should not be an issue. I daresay, it would feel almost as if you were wearing nothing at all!"

"Thanks, I don't need to be reminded." You groan.

"Well, come now, the rest of your crew is waiting." Frolaytia tuts as she saunters out of the changing room.

With one last groan, you follow her out, to the main preparation room, and get a good look at the rest of the crew in their new digs. Naturally enough, Amy, Elsa, Lida, and Natalia were wearing form fitting suits similar to yours, all color coded so you could quickly determine their role. However, what struck you as odd was that Bradford and Scott seemed to be wearing a more conventional set of shirt and pants. Bradford also had that silly green sweater pulled over it, making him look absolutely ridiculous. Tank was... Tank. This time he had swapped out his old carapace armor for that fancy Accord power armor. Despite its sleek and streamlined appearance, it still pretty much hid everything about Tank's appearance. You remember that those armors were typically blue or purple, but it looked as if he had hastily spray painted it black, his preferred armor color.

"Captainnnnnnn!" Amy whines, her arms crossed to try and hide her bust. "Do we really have to wear these?"

"Feels really comfortable, actually." Elsa says as she flexes her arms.

"I don't feel very much different." Bradford remarks.

"THAT'S BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR THIS THING!" Amy roars.

"Well, you're just going to have to get used to it." You sigh. "We're going to have to be wearing these for the long haul."

"They do have their advantages, too." Frolaytia smirks, her eyes darting among your girls. "They're also rated for vacuum. No need to fear a hull breach, at least not immediately."

"Oh gee, that's swell." Amy rolls her eyes. "I guess I should be thankful this slutsuit will keep me suffocating to death in a situation where our ship is already fucked!"

"Chill, Amy, chill." Elsa pats her on the shoulder.

"ABNORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE DETECTED." Amy's suit chimes. "ADMINISTERING CHEMICAL RELAXANT."

"Hey! Don't you dareeeeeeeeeuuuaaaaa...." Amy's eyes suddenly go dull as she enters some sort of half sleep state.

"I think I'm liking these new suits already." Lida says casually, not even taking her eyes off from her gamepad.

"Oh yes, they also have their own personal medical monitoring and care units." Frolaytia adds.

"Oooooh, I would LOVE to tinker with those!" Natalia grins widely, much to your concern.

"All right, now that we're all gathered here, I suppose it's time to show you all your new ship." Frolaytia strides forward and hits a key on the wall, causing a panel to retract, exposing a window that shows the docked Gullinbursti.

And your crew goes quiet as they gaze upon the sleek, slender ship. Judging from the looks of awe, they all seemed to like it. Especially Amy, seeing as how she'd broken out of her chemically induced stupor almost instantly and was pressing her face against the glass.

Tank just looks on and shakes his head slightly, as if he wasn't impressed with the sight.

"Prefer the hardier stuff, don't you?" You say to your resident muscle.

Tank nods in agreement.

"Well, I'm sorry it's not to your tastes, but it's what we've got." You pat Tank on the shoulderpad. "But I've been assured that she's much tougher than she looks."

Tank shrugs. He'll believe it when he sees it.

"All right now that we've all had the proper opportunity to view the ship, let's get you all familiarized with it!" Frolaytia opens up another door, which leads into a room built to look exactly like the Gullinbursti's bridge. "This is our bridge simulator, to help train you on how the ship works. It will also allow you to test certain armament patterns to see how they work as well."

"Really now?" You nod. "Sounds pretty sophisticated."

"It is." Frolaytia nods. "It uses the most advanced holographic reality technology to simulate just about any situation we can think of. We can start any time, if you wish."

"All right, let's get this started." You say as you take a seat in the captain's seat. The rest of your crew takes their standard positions as they would if there in an actual ship.

"Now, I will explain how the Gullinbursti's systems work, in case you're unfamiliar." Frolaytia steps up at the front of the bridge, hands on her hips like a teacher. "When in combat operations, the flux reactor will be your primary source of power. Now, while the flux reactor effectively has an infinite amount of energy, it generates an exotic form of heat called FLUX."

You all nod as you follow along.

"I regular operation, flux is not an issue as the Gullinbursti can passively vent it." Frolaytia points to a holographic diagram depicting a miniature version of the ship, little heat lines emanating from it representing the movement of this flux. "However, in the midst of combat, the reactor will generate more flux than the ship is capable of naturally venting, and if allowed to buildup, will force an emergency vent which temporarily disables all systems, which of course is not an idea situation in combat."

"Well, can't that be overridden?" Scott asks.

"The forced venting is an emergency safety measure. Bypassing it would mean that your own ship becomes a giant pressure cooker before it explodes." Frolaytia explains flatly.

"Oh." Scott visibly deflates.

"Anyways, pushing your engines, firing weapons, and taking damage to your shield all generates flux. It will be up to you to figure out how to properly manage your ship." Frolaytia continues. "SHIELDS will stay up indefinitely, but every time they absorb a hit, it generates flux. Behind your shields is the HULL, which is your last line of defense against the void. Make sure it doesn't get damaged."

FLUX CAPACITY: 120
HULL: 80

"Now, let's see what kind of primary weapon system you'd like to use." Frolaytia smiles.

>>45124534
ION CANNON: Typically a weapon used on larger capital ships, Accord engineers have managed to miniaturize the standard ion cannon to a size where a destroyer could mount one. However, the weapon still runs the length of the hull, limiting its firing arc, and it has a large flux generation rate. However, very few things hit by this weapon survive the initial shot. 30 flux per shot.

FUSION BLASTER: Using powerful electromagnetic fields, a fusion explosion is artificially created and then focused into a single beam. Since the beam is focused through EM fields, there is no physical turret which gives the weapon a wide firing arc. However, the beam quickly loses energy as it travels, making it more effective as a close range weapon. 15 flux per shot.

PLASMA CASTER: Rather than a singular weapon, the plasma caster is in fact numerous projectors that fire large bolts of plasma. This allows for targeting of multiple enemies and more efficient firing, but has lower attack power. 5 flux per shot.

"Let's try out the ion cannon." You say.

"Hmmm, a bold choice." Frolaytia nods. "And your ship can mount a secondary weapon system, as well."

LASER DEFENSE SYSTEM: An array of laser emitters placed at strategic areas of the ship give wide coverage to fight threats too close or out of the line of fire of the ship's primary weapon. Very effective against small craft and incoming missiles, but individual beams have difficulty penetrating armor, especially at long ranges. 2 flux per shot.

UNIVERSAL MISSILE SYSTEM: A series of small missiles launchers placed on strategic points on the ship, the UMS can fire dozens of small, highly maneuverable missiles capable of bringing down small ships and enemy missiles. Limited missile capacity but does not generate flux. 48 missiles capacity.

PHOTON TORPEDO LAUNCHER: A much harder hitting projectile than the standard missile, the photon torpedo is essentially a rocket motor sheathed in a coat of high intensity plasma and other exotic energies. Causes extremely high damage, but the energy sheath has the negative effect of blinding onboard guidance systems, restricting this weapon to straight trajectories only. 24 torpedoes.

Okay, so with the Laser Defense System we have to limit ourselves to three shots with the Ion Cannon before falling back to vent flux. That leaves us with effectively nothing else. I'd suggest limiting ourselves to two shots with the Ion Cannon, leaving the others for the laser defense system, shields, and using our engines.

Do not like the ammunition limit that the UMS has. If there wasn't a port nearby that can re-arm it when we use it up, the system would be useless. Also, having missiles means carrying the danger of being hit in the ammo stowage and further risk catastrophic explosions if the ship gets hit, providing even more disadvantages.

Also, you can't shoot down lasers like you can for missiles.
>>
Guys, guys. Remember, this is still a simulation and not the final loadout for our ship yet.

Let's test all of the bad combos first, see how hilariously bad they are, and THEN choose a balanced combination.

This is a revote after I saw the newly revealed information. The missiles would be much better due to their flexibility and the lack of Flux usage. The advantage of the Laser's ability to not need ammo is much less if the missiles can be replenished by the ship directly.
>>
Some more arguments for the missile system: With the UMS, we can safely fire the Ion Cannon three times in a row and have enough to be decently fine. With just the LWS I wouldn't be comfortable firing it more than twice in a row.

Remember, Flux is how we sustain damage and use our engines effectively. And we'll want to overdrive our engines to retreat to vent flux.

"Ah, ion cannon and lasers, huh?" Frolaytia nods. "Interesting combination. Let's see how that works, yes?"

She then steps away as the screen fizzles, generating the artificial holographic environment. Up ahead, you see a rectangular, grey and blocky ship. You could see gun barrels poking out against its silhouette. It certainly looked rather menacing.

"This is the Hegemony's equivalent to the Normandy-class, the Halcyon-class destroyer." Frolaytia explains. "It's armed with a heavy magnetic accelerator cannon, as well as an array of smaller mass driver turrets. While these weapons are cruder and less powerful than ours, they ARE more flux efficient, so do not underestimate them."

"That looks like some pretty thick armor on it, though." Elsa points out.

"It is. The Halcyons are still old designs, so they sport thick armor under the assumption that they would also be facing threats with equivalent weaponry. Other than a few rare cases, most Halycons do not employ shield systems. If you can get a good hit with the ion cannon, I daresay that you'd be able to gut the entire ship."

"Well, let's find out, shall we?" You grin. "Let's get this started!"

SIMULATION ACTIVATED

Once those words float by, the lighting turns to a dark red to signify combat conditions. Immediately, you can see the Halycon charge at you.

"Detecting energy buildup. They're preparing to fire their primary weapon." Lida announces.

"Amy, get us out of the line of fire!" You bark.

"On it!" Amy hands fly across the control console in a blur of motion. The ship does a simulated shudder as the Gullinbursti pulls hard to port.

The Halcyon turns to try and track, but its just a bit too slow. However, you see the mass driver turrets swiveling around and the HUD picks up the signature flares of missile launches. The mass drivers fire a volley, and the Gullinbursti's shields flare with a blue flash as the shells are deflected away.

"Multiple missile locks!" Lida warns. "I count at least six medium missiles!"

"Elsa, do we have a firing solution?!" You ask.

"Not yet!" Elsa growls. "I need Amy to swing the nose around first!"

"I need a few more seconds!" Amy grunts.

""Engage point defense!" You command. "Shoot those missiles down!"

"Firing!" Elsa affirms.

On your tactical view, you can see ruby red beams of light lance out from the Gullinbursti, bracketing the incoming missiles. Six explosions confirm their success, though you notice your flux meter noticeably rise.

Meanwhile, your shield is continually pounded by mass driver rounds, adding more strain. Amy hits a lever, swinging Gullinbursti's nose around to point at the Halcyon's flank while maintaining lateral movement. Already, your tactical view shows damage calculations appearing as an overlay on top of the Halcyon. Focusing firepower on the ship's reactor had about 70% chance of hull penetration and 100% chance of completely destroying the ship if successful. An alternate firing mode had you sweeping the ion beam across the Halcyon's flank, with only 20% chance of hull penetration and massive damage to numerous subsystems.

"Ion cannon charged and ready!" Elsa shouts, her finger already hovering over the firing key.

"Fire!" You order. "Focus all fire on the reactor core!"

"Firing!" Elsa cackles as she punches the key.

You're temporarily blinded as the ion cannon fires, briefly filling your view with searing white light. And just like that a pure blue-white beam lances out and drills right into the rear section of the Halcyon. You watch as the ion beam slams into the Halycon's thick armored flank, sopping for a brief second or two before it melts away. After about three or so seconds, the weapon safety kicks in and cuts off the firing sequence. The beam winks out, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the Halycon. Another brief second passes by before you see a few flashes within the hole, and the Halycon explodes brilliantly, sending fire and debris flying in all sides before the entire hologram dissolves.

"Congratulations." Frolaytia claps as she steps forward. "You've won your first battle! Well, simulated battle, but it's not bad for a new crew like yours!"

But we should find out just how much this ship can take before it hits it's limits in the sims while we can, if only so that we would know better to avoid that happening for real situations. HP and Flux points are easy to understand, but what other kinds of scenarios would render those less important? There are still the stealth systems and boosting options that we haven't explored yet, and that's not counting how well the missiles work against a much bigger ship.

"I'm all for it." You grin.

"Oh, I see." Frolaytia's grin widens. "Then let us try this scenario, then."

The simulated scene reforms, but now instead of one Halcyon, you are confront with TWO. While the leading one looks the same as the first, the trailing destroyer looks noticeably different, the signature boxy outlines of additional missile launchers.

"You see, standard Hegemony policy is to engage Accord ships with at least a 2:1 or 3:1 numbers ratio. Since you'll be ranging out to deep space on your own, you must always expect to be outnumbered." Frolaytia chuckles.

"Just had to open your big mouth, didn't you?" Amy groans.

"Picking up multiple target locks." Lida says, beads of sweat now visible on her forehead. "Weapons charging. First ship is closing distance while the second is holding position."

"They're trying to split our attention." Bradford grimaces. "That second Halycon is going to act as artillery support, lobbing missiles at us while the first one tries to get into firing position."

"I can see that, Bradford." You narrow your eyes. You go over your options. You could close in on the first Halcyon and make yourself a tougher target for the second one, but you get the feeling they'd still have the advantage in a close range slug out. You could try going for the second one, but you'd be exposing your back to the first.

Agreed on how missiles are a bad idea. If we were equipped to fire counter-missiles of our own, the first would be a better target. But as it is now, letting those missiles constantly drain Flux by either point defense usage or shield draining means we'd lose by being whittled down. Kill the Second one first, and dodge the aim of the the First one with boost later.

"Punch it, Amy!" You order.

"Punching it!" Amy cackles as she pushes the throttle forward. Even with inertial dampening, you can feel slight Gs pushing against you. This was one very thorough simulator.

Up ahead, the second Halcyon, and its missiles, suddenly become much much larger as the Gullinbursti speeds forth. However, as you close the distance, you also reduce the available reaction time of your laser batteries. Again, ruby red beams shoot forward, spearing incoming missiles and destroying them, but not all of them. You wince as several missiles slip through the point defense and slam into your shield. Immediately, warning sirens chime as your flux levels rise.

"Amy, throttle it back!" You order. "Elsa, get that weapon ready to fire NOW!"

"Roger!" Amy says as she hits Gullinbursti's retro rockets, greatly slowing down the whole ship. You watch as the second Halcyon opens up more missile tubes, but it's already too late.

"Firing!" Elsa laughs as the ion beam fires. Almost immediately, secondary explosions erupt all across the ship as the stored missiles are set off by the high temperatures. The ion beam continues on to cut right through the Halycon's engine block, causing even more secondary explosions. The Halcyon doesn't explode, but it begins to list and drift and fires wrack its hull.

"Incoming missiles from behind" Lida calls out. "The other ship is trying to line up a shot on us!"

Indeed, your rear tactical view shows the second Halcyon freshly completing its turn, launching a series of six missiles at your rear.

"Amy, get us behind that wreck!" You order. "Scott, prepare for a flux vent!"

"Roger!" Amy grimaces as she throttles up, guiding Gullinbursti towards the burning hulk of the missile Halcyon and then noses down, interposing the burning destroyer between you and the intact Halcyon.

"Scott, NOW!" You order.

"Venting!" Scott flips open a safety cover and hits the big red button underneath. A loud siren wails and you hear a hissing sound as Gullinbursti vents all of its built up flux. Your tactical display and your crew's work stations go dark for a few brief seconds before rebooting.

"Status report!" You shout.

"Propulsion up!"

"Weapons up!"

"Sensors up!"

"Shields up!"

"Lida, what happened those missiles?" You ask.

"Look like the heat and mass of the wreck fooled their sensors." Lida explains.

Right then, the stricken Halcyon shatters like glass as a massive shell punches straight through it.

"They've got their MAC locked onto us!" Bradford grunts. "This piece of cover isn't going to hold!"

"Amy, time to go fast." You say to your helmswoman.

"I was waiting for that!" Amy cackles as she engages the engines at full. Again you feel the press of simulated G forces as Gullinbursti rockets out away from the wrecked Halcyon. And just in time, too. A second MAC round slams into the stricken ship, this time setting off its reactor. Your tactical view is temporarily blinded as the ship breaks up. Mass driver rounds then flash by as they attempt to track your movements.

"Picking up increased energy output." Lida says. "Looks like they're pouring energy into their engines as well."

Sure enough, you tactical view shows the remaining Halcyon's retro rockets firing up as it goes into a rapid spin to keep up with your speed. If the crew were real, you didn't envy what they would be feeling right now as their ship spun around like a top.

"What's the call, Cap?" Amy asks. "I can't keep this speed up forever!"

"Let's do a high speed pass on them!" You instruct Amy. "Straight at them! Elsa, get read to hit them with the ion cannon!"

"Okay, hold on tight!" Amy whips Gullinbursti around and aims straight for it, giving Elsa the best shot possible. Elsa, on her part, times the shot as best she can, firing off the cannon right at the moment the nose lines up with the Halcyon.

At the same time, the Halcyon manages to fire off a shot from its MAC, the massive hypersonic shell is hastily aimed, and deflects off Gullinbursti's shield at an oblique angle, but your flux meter still spikes from the hit. Just brief seconds later, the ion beam sweeps straight down the Halcyon's spine, melting turrets, sensors, and pretty much anything else sticking out of the hull.

"Positive hit!" Bradford confirms, his expression getting the closest to excitement as possible for him. "Looks like we did some serious damage to them."

"And our shields?" You ask.

"Holding fine, but our flux is pretty high again." Lida remarks. "The Halcyon isn't turning around. Looks like it's trying to withdraw."

"How about its weapons? Is it still a threat?"

"Well, the MAC won't be an issue, but it's got enough turrets and missiles left that it might lock us out of using the ion cannon again." Lida continues.

"Should we pursue, Captain?" Bradford asks.

We don't have the flux to hit it and shrug off the hits. Since it's not mission critical to finish it off, let it go.

Guys, is there a way we can perform upgrades to this ship like her namesake and visual inspiration? We should seriously look into finding some reinforced hull plates and either larger/more efficient flux heatsink things so we don't have to flush so often and don't build up so quickly.

Merc'll probably give us the opportunity for upgrades after we've done a few missions and hauled in some cash for the corps.

"Roger that, powering down." Amy nods.

With that, the hologram dissolves, and Frolaytia walks in, clapping slowly.

"An impressive performance. Not many can get past that scenario on their first attempt " She grins. "Though I am curious. Why did you spare that second ship?"

Pretty much. We've been caught up in the middle of a galaxy-wide game of Planetside, and I think that we've tossed in with Vanu. So on top of doing the entire "go where no man has gone before" schtick, we also have to be at our benefactors' beck and call whenever we have to go fuck shit up among the Hegemony or the Confederacy.

The pay for our efforts should be sweet--or at least I'm hoping it's sweet.

And most of that is probably going to go back toward upkeep for our ship and payroll for our crew. Profits will probably be fairly slim as we start out.

Perhaps if we took on some bounty hunting on the side we'd be able to make some good money? Either that or finding lost space relics for eccentrics--that always has a hefty purse attached.

"My first concern is my crew and ship's safety." You say as you stand up from your simulated command chair. "If I don't have to put them in danger, then I won't."

"A fair point of view." Frolaytia smiles as she puffs her pipe. "I always find officers like you utterly fascinating. Will you be able to make your mark on the frontier... or will the frontier make its mark on you?"

"Yeah yeah, so when are we gonna leave?" Amy grunts as she puts her hands on her hips in impatience. "When can I start flying the REAL ship?"

"Oh, we shall get to that shortly!" Frolaytia assures her. "You've all performed admirably. I don't think my superiors will raise any objections to an immediate deployment! Now, come with me, Captain. My subordinates will help get your crew familiarized with the ship. We have one more thing to handle."

"And what would that be?" You ask.

Frolaytia's smile grows even wider as she gestures out the window to the docked Gullinbursti.

"The final fit out of course!"

The roll-less gameplay flowed better, I think. It's a bit odd to get used too, but I think we should stick with it for a bit longer.

Thanks for running, Merc!

IMO the lack of dice rolls lowers tension. Insofar combat is just watching our Flux and making sure we don't vote for stupid decisions. Granted, if we made stupid decisions earlier, we could still be screwed over later, but the tension of putting our fate in the hand of the dice gods is gone, and combat is so far not complicated enough that it feels like there could be real failure.

I'm willing to stick with it, but I just hope it gets more interesting in the coming threads.
