You fly through the night sky in a wide circle around your house. Or to be more accurate, your very angry mom's house that you just busted a couple holes in shortly before she tried to break your wings. This is really not where you saw today going when you got up this morning. You're hatless and can't get help getting it back or avenging it without first submitting to a wing breaking.

You're pretty sure your wings would heal eventually, but you're really getting to like flying. Allegations of bird behavior be damned.

You'll have to figure out what to do about Mom once you've found a new place to sleep. Preferably one where your Mom won't think to look for you, which is a lot of places. Some of those places have to be suitable for sleeping.

Swinging around in midair you decide to head for the time hole. You're not sure Mom knows where it is, and you're entirely sure she wouldn't fit down it anyway. You're not sure YOU still fit down it, but sacrifices must be made for science and your wings not being broken in your sleep.

You can't help but feel like you're forgetting something though...

Oh birds, you left Nytora to fend for herself near your Mom. No good can come of leaving someone who looks so much like you near someone who wants to hurt someone who looks like you. Readjusting course you plan a high flyover of your house to try and spot your twin.

Idly, you wonder if humans think you and Nytora look the same. You'd have to assume so. Humans are kinda specist and really can't tell lizards apart, though you suppose that one of you having wings and the other being awake at night helps. Ugh, speaking of being awake at night why do you have to stay awake this late. The sun went down hours ago.

Below you, your mom's house is shrouded in more fog than usual for the swamp at night. Like way more. You can't see the house. That's pretty suspicious. Still, when you crank up your internal light you can barely make out what you think is the shape of Nytora laid out a short distance away from the house, though still in the weirdly thick fog.

You might be able to do a fly by, though it'd be easier to just to float down grab her and try to take off again. You appear to have burnt through your overeating induced sluggishness earlier with fear for your life adrenaline, so getting off the ground with her should be possible.

Or you could find out if fog is flammable...

You really like testing new things.

You're pretty sure you could set your little sun spell to follow someone else.
You think.

Look, it's been like a month since you cast the stupid thing, you're not even sure you can remember the hand motions well enough to try to figure out how your new wing hands would do them. Now you just need to pull in and mold some mana, and-

RAPTOR JESUS CHRIST

So, you've figured out where the all consuming hunger problem is coming from. Or at least you're pretty sure that whatever the stupid crab cursed you with, it's settled firmly in the space where your faulty ability to draw mana used to be. So that's a thing. If you were at all good at taking care of your mana problems, you'd probably have noticed that sooner. To be fair, you really don't pay much attention to things that aren't actively causing you problems though, and hunger is manageable.

Your danger sense tingles as something breaks the treeline, and flies toward you. Folding your wings you drop a half dozen feet and watch as a ball of Mom's special sticky muck sails over your head. Maybe now isn't the best time to get introspective.

Wings unfurled again you cut toward what you really hope is Nytora, and hold your breath as you try to fly through the trees and grab her. It's actually surprisingly easy, a quick slaloming path through the trees and fog carries you to the prone lizard, wings seeming to slip in and out of position as naturally as breathing.

Ah, breathing you should do that. You let out your breath as your feet close around the recumbent form of your twin and you flap hard to get air again. This fog smells funny, but you don't have time to worry about it as the tell tale sound of Mom not being quiet as she runs after you comes rumbling out of the swamp behind you.

You're away in the air long before Mom's head breaks the fog line as she snaps at you. That's gotta be a jump like four or five times your height. That's terrifying.

Higher altitudes seem like an even better idea for the short flight to the time hole than they did even before you wanted to avoid letting Mom know which way you were going.

You still fly off in a random direction while you climb. If Mom wants to track you she can do it by trying to run through the swamp while keeping an eye on two dark blotches in a dark sky. Once you've got a sufficient height you turn toward the time hole.

It's pretty much the way you left it. There's a new rope leading down into it, but you're pretty sure that's not lizard related. Lizard rope isn't this nice. You set Nytora on the ground, and examine her. She's just sleeping. How could she sleep through Mom tearing a new hole in the swamp, or with her face down in the mud?

Actually you're feeling kind of tired too... Maybe you can take a quick nap before trying to wake Nytora.

Alright, you're clearly not used to staying up this

yawn

late.

You pull up the convenient rope and try to wrap it around Nytora. You think you do an alright job. You'd like to see someone else with wingclaws for hands do better anyway.

You shove Nytora into the hole and step on the rope to keep her from falling too quickly. You release the pressure slowly to lower her down, and discover that being immune to fire doesn't make you immune to friction burns as the rope quickly ablates your scales. It doesn't hurt or even get through the scale but you do let go of the rope for a second to blow on your claw. Then you realize you just let go of the rope and pounce on it again. There's a moment of fear as you worry the rope won't hold, but then nothing snaps.

Good enough. You ease off on the pressure and rope lowers much more slowly. Like there's no weight on the end...

You crawl in the hole after Nytora. It's a tight fit, and you don't relish doing this again anytime soon. Crap, you need food regularly. You'll probably have to do this a couple times a day. This day just keeps getting worse. Also you're really tired. You could almost fall asleep wedged into this hole.

Powering on through it you finally reach the point where the vertical shaft expands into the big room full of time corpses. Before they disappeared because time corpses.

Huh. That is a lot more humans than you thought were left alive down here. Granted these ones are all different heights and shapes, and wearing varied clothes. Including one of them with a funny hat.

Hold on you've heard of this. From the adventurers. Lot's of funny looking people in robes... Something about blue oysters? YOU CAN'T REMEMBER.

Luckily adventurers only really talk about things they've murdered or almost been murdered by. Usually both at once, really. Does that mean you can kill these guys. You kind of just wanted to sleep here. A sentiment they share since only a couple are fully awake, with the others slowly rousing.

Now where's... Ah. Nytora smashed the other half of the big hourglass thing she first appeared in. You're proud of her for finishing what she started. Less proud of her for still being asleep. Though you can't say much, you're really tired too.

Are those guys casting magic?

The body of the first funny clothes wearing person crunches when you land on him. Wait, that's it? Your siblings would still fight you if you landed on them. Is he dead? Why is he so squishy. The muscled human you fought before you evolved was much tougher than this.

Green light flashes to your left and you turn in time to see the spell of the other waking funny clothes guy collide with you.

Now you're surrounded by the entire group of people with funny clothes. Weren't they sleeping? They've all got spells swirling around, so you decide to stop being encircled and leap to the cieling again.

"Now," one of them cries as you start moving.

Spells lash across space, burning, and freezing, and who knows what other effects. You're really glad you're on the cieling and not one of the people in that circle of wizards that just killed each other. Except the one guy who was threatening you with a dagger. He managed to dodge. But can he dodge the drop lizard?

No. No he could not. Also, he was just as squishy as the first guy.

You scrape the blood and gore off your claws on the nearest bedroll. This room is pretty on fire now. It's possibly the most on fire thing you've ever had to deal with. Except when you were on fire... That was unpleasant. Not sure you should stay in the room on fire. There're still tunnels leading out from here. You could hide out in them for a while.

Or you could just sleep in here. You're fairly fireproof.

fire. FIre isn't a big thing to you at this point in your life. Which is like two months in if you recall correctly. You stopped keeping count. Maybe you should slow down. Enjoy murdering things that can't murder you back more. Like guys in funny clothes which are rapidly burning.

Oh right. Fire.

You gather up the STILL sleeping Nytora and dump her in one of the tunnels leading off the main room. You're not sure how fire resistant she is, except to know it's less than you.

yawn

What were you doing? Oh right, fire. You really need a nap or something.

You dig your dagger out from your temporary carrying bag, and spend a few seconds fiddling with it to switch out the magic stones. Then you spend a minute trying to get it to turn on with the hunger curse eating all the mana you collect. How did you do this earlier?

You try putting some light into it and the dagger activates after a short stutter. That works. With the water stone in the dagger turns into a line of flowing water that doesn't actually look that terrifying. It does suffice to activate your mantle though.

Magically created water flows out over your scales as you walk back into the burning room. The water is actually kind of refreshing. It's really warm in here.

It takes about ten minutes of rolling on fires to get the whole room put out. A little longer for the parts that were burning stone. You didn't know stone COULD burn. How badly did the weird clothes people want to kill you?

You'd ask but they're all dead. And if they had diaries, they probably burned with the corpses. There's really not much left in here.

Fire out, you collect Nytora, form the world's smallest possible lizard pile, two lizards, And pass out.

You wake up from a dream about chasing a tiny version of your mom so you could eat her for being a jerk. You're pretty sure you'd never actually do that, but still a fun dream.

You can still taste the lizard in your mouth. No wait, this is Nytora's tail. Spitting it out, you immediately pretend that never happened. How embarassing. Would ruin your reputation if anyone found out.

Luckily the lizard herself still appears to be out for the count. You're almost ravenously hungry.

You should get moving before you do something that Nytora would murder you for. Even if it would be delicious and grow back eventually. Thinking about it you're not sure you could forgive yourself for inflicting the same pain on others that you once suffered. Maybe a morning bask will clear your head.

You whip your tail around a bit more than is probably necessary as you climb up the walls of the burnt room and up into the hole. Guh, this remains a tight fit. You really hope you don't get much bigger.

At the top of the shaft you poke your head out slowly to look around for signs of angry matriarchs. Not that you're sure you'd spot her if she was dedicated to hiding, but it's worth checking. Mom is scary.

Nothing presents itself, and you're not covered in poison glue, so you're pretty sure she's not nearby. The sun, for what amounts of it filter through the trees, is indeed rising. You climb a tree, then rip the top off to form a sort of platform to bask on.

This is nice.

You decide to label your problems in order to better sort them out.

First. Mom wants to kill you. Or just hurt you badly, but you don't think she gets less angry at you by looking at the holes in her house.

Second. You are hatless. not a huge concern, but something important to your self esteem or something. You want a hat dang it.

Third. Nytora. That's preetty well solved as long as she stays in the hole. She's probably going to get hungry though so you'll grab her something later.

Fourth. You maybe need to slow down. You were in more than one life or death fight yesterday. Granted you're pretty sure neither would have killed you, but it's the principle of the thing.
[1/2]
>>
>>45165429
[2/2]
Mom is clearly the most important problem, so you spend a bit thinking of ideas to make her less angry. The first idea you have is food. But that's probably because you're hungry. Finding the largest animal in the swamp you can, and dragging its carcass back to Mom as an apology. Might work.

Alternatively, you can just disappear for a couple weeks. That might even help with your slowing down thing. Auntie seems to know the best places to hide from Mom's wrath. You could ask her.

Or just ask auntie about ideas to calm mom down. Lot's of good ideas. This has been a very productive bask.

You're not sure how to solve the hat problem. You may have been a little too angry to think straight last night. Though fishman murder does seem like the prevalent way to get your stuff back.

Well, sitting here isn't going to do much more good.

Except basking.

The ultimate good.

But no, you should go see Auntie. Nytora doesn't seem like she's going to wake up anytime soon. You should have time to sneak off, steal breakfast from whoever auntie is eating with, and bring some back for your twin.

There're only really two places you can think to look for auntie, you consider as you take flight. Kuru's house, and Mom's house. You're not going near one of those so your destination is set. If auntie isn't at Kuru's maybe you'll be able to get Kuru to help you find her.

You're sure you know where Kuru lives. Pretty sure you can even find it from the air.

It takes you twice as long to find it as expected. You may have flown over it three times and finally had to get directions from the lizard who grows the melting pot plants. You don't want to talk about it.

Kuru's house is almost as big as Mom's, which you hope doesn't mean there's a lizard as big as mom in there. When you let out a greeting "hey" an older looking lizard who isn't even as big as a big lizard, just a normal short lizard, comes out. He's tiny.

"Whatchu wants?" he demands grouchily.

"Auntie. Or Kuru," you say, trying to stay clear and polite. If he's being grumpy at you he can't be that smart.

"Kuru's your auntie? I don't remembers a grandkid like you," the lizard mumbles narrowing his eyes as he inspects you.

"No, Auntie is Kuru's friend," you explain patiently.

"Kuru's f- Oh you'res one of Kasha's brood. Well gets gone. Kuru ain't here. She's off on the mountain tryin' to figures out what your fool aunt's been eatings."

He waves a claw at you and starts to walk off. How rude. He's kind of a jerk. You're really really hungry.

You should probably eat something before you eat someone you'll regret. Leaving the old lizard to his business you fly up into the mountains nearby. You'll either find food or you'll find Kuru.

Instead you find luck out and find both. Kuru, rooting around in the dirt, and a bear sneaking up on her. Which is a neat trick on the bear's part. You weren't aware bears could do stealth. Or maybe she's just really distracted. Either way. Two birds, one lizard shaped stone.

Kuru flinches when you crash down behind her. The bear lets out some kind of noise too, but you don't hear it as you're already tearing chunks off it. You're really really hungry. Kuru stares as you sate the greater edge of your hunger. And also eat half a bear. You didn't even really taste it.

"Hey."

She waves.

"Have you seens auntie?" you ask.

"Um, I thinks she was at your house. Was she not there?"

"I haven'ts been there since last night," you admit, "Mom is angry with me."

"Why?"

"Blews up part of her house."

"You whats? Hows are you in one piece?!" Kuru says surprised.

"I rans really fast," you admit, "She really likes that house."

"She really does," Kuru agrees, "I don't know if Sarissa can calm her down."

"I was going to ask her for ideas."

"Have you considered fixing what you broke?"

You consider that then wave your wings. "Don't thinks I could."

"So gets someone else to do it. Your sister is good at buildings things."

That hadn't occurred to you. Maybe you could get someone from the town if Min can't do it. They've got lots of buildings. They've got to be good at buildings.

"Was thinkings of getting her a really big meal."

"That might works. Especially if it's got poison or something."

You hadn't thought of that either.

"Why ares you up here anyway?" you ask, looking at the dirt behind her. It looks like someting's been uprooted, but the dirt is dry so it isn't recent.

"Ah, your aunt has been comings up here to collects something but won't tells me what. I am following where she wents to see if I can finds out what it was."

You feel like you should remember something here.

"Wake weed?"

"Hm?"

"I thinks it was wake weed," you grumble, scratching your head. "Can'ts remember."

"She tolds you?"

"No, Koma smelled it."

"Why?" Kuru shakes her head. "I'll asks her later. Did you wants me to talks to your aunt?"

"Please. I thinks I wills be finding Mom some big food first. Just needs to find some."

"Well, if you want, I knows where there's something big and venomous. But it might be too big."

"There is no 'too big.'" you tell her.

The many legged monster erupts out of the ground its claws clacking as its tail whips around. A pale yellow fluid drips from its tail and hisses and smokes where it splashes the ground.

It's a lot bigger than you.
