You start walking towards the girl with the drill, since you fear for her further safety as the seconds pass on. She’s apparently too focused on figuring out why the drill-bit isn’t going all the way through the two-by-four to notice your approach. Aside from the confused look on her face, she has a lot going for her: lean figure, heart-shaped face, pronounced curves and voluminous red hair that brought out the green in her eyes.

But you digress. You aren’t here to ogle. There’s plenty of time to do that tomorrow when you hit the beach proper. Right now, you’re on the clock, and as much as you’d like to continue to trace the line of freckles going down the small of her back, there’s a mystery to solve, and a finite timeline to do it in.
Squatting down beside her, you clear your throat to get her attention. “Excuse me, miss? That’s not the right way to hold the drill. Right now, you’re more likely to put a hole through your hand instead of the board.”

She turns towards you with a clearly irritated look on her face. “Well thanks for pointing that out, jerkwad. So now that you’re done correcting me, why don’t you back the fuck aaa….” Her snappy retort comes to a grinding halt as she fully takes in your appearance. Irrigation quickly gives way to muted awe, then intense scrutiny as her eyes rapidly dart across your body.

You give a wan smile as you try not to shift nervously. Earlier, you were just making general observations in a purely clinical tone, right? Right now, unless you’ve failed to notice a grease spot on your shirt from Lazy Susan’s that she did, you’re more than fairly certain that she’s undressing you with her eyes. Wow, this feels really uncomfortable.

>>
After what feels like a brief eternity, she scrambles to stand up at her full height, at least five-seven, and coughs vigorously. “Oh, wow…erm, this is awkward,” She laughs nervously. “I am so, so sorry about that. I just…I just thought you were one of the Funland workers. Some of the fuckboys there’ve been heckling all of the girls all afternoon for drinks at the Drydock when they got off shift. Thought you were one of the more…erm, persistent ones.

“But, now I see that you aren’t! I mean, you’re not wearing the red uniform, or the belt of spare change for the little tykes with too much money on their hands. You’re too well-dressed, jacked…and…and oh gawd, I’m rambling, aren’t I?”

Fuck it. You’ve already made a good impression. Time to see if you can press your luck any further than you already have. “Well what do you know? I just happen to like girls that ramble…”

That really seemed to have done something. If her face went any redder, you’d be worried about a dangerously high fever. On top of that, her breath’s coming out really quickly and her stammer’s gone out of control. “What?! I mean…that’s…really…oh wow…I…”

You were never much of a ladykiller back in high school or college. Sure, you had the occasional one-off that lasted an average of three weeks due to your study’s demands, but this kind of reaction? Towards you? This wasn’t something you were expecting to happen in a million years.

You quietly thank the gods of fitness that have blessed you with gains during your training in Cocytus.

But seriously, you should probably dial it down. You’ve got an ominous feeling going down the back of your spine, as if invisible daggers are being driven into your back. Probably should reign it back in just in case Alger’s watching. Knowing how much of a hardass the Commander is, he’d probably disapprove of the ‘James Bond’ approach to investigations.

>Victoria disapproves -6

So, back to being a good Samaritan and helping others with their problems. “I’m more than willing to lend a hand, if you don’t mind?” You outstretch your hand towards the drill clenched in a white-knuckled grip in her hands.

“So what’s the charity you guys’re running?” You grunt as you hold the board still. “Can’t say that I’ve ever seen something like this

Her face visibly droops to ‘crestfallen’ before she goes right back to her (normally?) nervous tone of voice. “It’s…it’s for St. Jude’s Children’s hospital! Y’know…if the Red Cross was more focused on kids? If you can take a look…over here…” She pauses to strain, reach and grab a brochure from a nearby table. “This completely covers the full extent of where the money’s going to.”

You take a brief moment to look at it as she retrieves another screw from the tool kit, placing it on the surface at the correct angle you showed her. Familiar words jump out from the brochure: active treatment, diagnostic, survival rate, happy families. This time, with a focus on cancer, specifically kids affected by the nasty.

“Well, it’s certainly a noble cause,” You state as you help her lift the board up. “Most girls wouldn’t be found doing something like this over summer break.”

A humorous laugh escapes her throat. “Which is why I’m the only one from my chapter here, and the others have gone for ice cream…baring Emma over there who’s too busy typing on her phone to even go grab a bite to eat.”

Huh. So that’s what brunette cell-phone girl’s name was. But digressing from that…

“That’s pretty low of them,” you declare. “I mean, c’mon. It’s the summer break, but fucking seriously? Leaving you to assemble this by yourself?"

“To be fair, they don’t have as much of an…” She purses her lips and frowns deeply. For a good ten seconds, you can see the gears in her head turn as she looks for the words before saying, “An…emotional investment in it as I do. Hence why they’re enjoying their fifteen minute break from work and I refuse to go until this fucking booth gets set up.”

‘Emotional investment’? The heck is that supposed to mea-

Wait, hold on.

Now that you take a look at her…her clothes are thoroughly drenched with sweat…and you try not to focus on how much skin is showing through. Good Christ, what’s she thinking? Yep, letting someone collapse from dehydration is not something you’re gonna let happen on your watch. It would be a complete affront to what you stand for.

“I’m not going to even bother asking if you’ve had anything to drink within the last hour,” you bluntly tell her. She tilts her head confusion as you continue, “Stay right there, and don’t you dare move another board. I’m getting you a drink before you keel over and crack your head open on the Boardwalk.”

Within three seconds, your steps take you to the closest refreshment shop. Ten more seconds and two (fucking seriously?) dollars shorter, you now have a bottle of ice-cold fresh water in your hands.

>Water Bottle ($2/ea)
>You now have $462.03 left in cash.

Without any time for her to question you, you thrust it in front of her brusquely. “Drink it,” You say. “All of it. This one’s on me, but the next time, you’re paying out of your wallet.”

She visibly bristles, scowls and retorts, “You didn’t need to do that. I’m fine, I swear-”

“Tell that to the paramedics when you wake up in the ambulance in the next thirty minutes, at least. Look,” you sigh, steering her towards a nearby bench, sit her down, and start your schtick, “Trust me. I’m a med student. I know my shit. So if not for me, drink the water for yourself. I don’t need to be a part of your charity to know how bad it’ll be if you suddenly take a rain check due to being hospitalized. At the rate you’re going, you’re only hurting yourself.”

For a moment, you wonder if she’s going to lash out angrily at you again when you first started talking. But it seems that your argument wins her over. With a reluctant sigh and a barely audible “thank you”, she pops the lid off the water bottle and starts drinking. The fluid doesn’t even last five seconds in the container before half of it disappears down her throat.

(cont.)
>>
Yikes. From the way she guzzled the damn thing, she must’ve been either really thirsty or without water for a very long time. Good Christ.

You take the water from her and set it down on the bench. “Feeling better?”

She takes a few moments for the coughing fit to pass before speaking, “…um, wow. I…I actually am. My headache’s…starting to abate…and I can definitely feel a whole lot more energized than I was five minutes ago.”

The smile on her face seems to be less forced, and the tinge of red on her cheeks was visibly going down by the second.Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink for little miss stubborn. Gotta break her out of that attitude somehow...

That elicits a soft chuckle out of her. “You think so?”

“You don’t spend upwards of seven years in pre-med and medical school without encountering humanity’s best and worst examples. Trust me when I say that I know so.”

“…you know, you’re the most polite, worldly, attracti- I mean erm…knowledgeable stranger I’ve ever met.”
You decide to pretend you didn’t hear her Freudian slip. “Just trying to make the world a brighter place is all.”

She exhales softly, and wipes the sweat off her face as best as she can. Not much of a good job considering how sweaty her shirt is, but hey. Them’s the breaks - and she just took it off, all the while muttering softly to herself as she removed the offending garment.

>Roll 1d100 Perception to hear what she muttered under her breath.

“That certainly feels much better,” she says, smiling as the cool sea breeze wafts over in your general direction. “I’ll be sure to keep water bottles stocked from now on…oh shit.”

You frown. “Something the matter?”

“I’m a fucking idiot,” she groans, clutching her face in her palms. “I can’t believe I just spent nearly ten minutes getting help and a drink from you without catching your name.”

You stand up and offer a hand to the bemoaning girl. “Well that can be rectified. My name’s…”

“Where...you...weeks...ago?”

“…Andrew Ryan, medical student and daylighting good Samaritan by trade.”

That gets a genuine laugh from her. “Alyssa Harding. Novice carpenter and leader of the Delaware Chapter of Phi Alpha.”

…What luck!

Looks like it’s a small world after all.

“Hey, I appreciate the drink and everything…” Alyssa slowly states, nervously looking around the busy area, “But if the rest of the sorority come back and see the two of us talking, they…erm…might…ah…get the wrong idea…about…us…”

While you would like to press her for more information, judging from the way she’s nervously fidgeting, it’s probably best to leave her alone for the moment.

But just before you decide to say goodbye, she impulsively blurts out, “Can I have your number?!”

…hold on, what?

That gets another blush out of her. “Erm! I mean…is…” She stammers before coughing violently, “I wouldn’t mind seeing you again…And! And…you could always swing by tomorrow when the booth’s open…so, if…if it isn’t any bother…”

Looks like she beat you to the punch. You were just about to ask her for her number yourself. Probably not as blunt as she did, but at least it leaves you without a sour taste in your mouth “Oh, yeah sure. I’d be glad to see you around sometime.”

It doesn’t take too long before you walk away, waving goodbye and good luck to the still-blushing sorority leader with a jaunty tune on your lips and her cell phone number in your COMP.

You raise your hands in supplication before any of them can go off. “It was strictly business,” you say defensively. “Use whatever is necessary to get the information. And besides, we managed to ID the leader of Phi Alpha, as well as get into her good books. Not a total outing wasted.”

“Yeah, that you really did there, Mister Bond,” Brady snarks, adding fancy airs to his British accent, “You gonna get into her bikini next after her shirt? I have no idea what you said, but damn, you work fast. But is that after ‘shaken and not stirred’, or while you’re stirring her up-”

Rolling your eyes, you make a neck-chopping gesture. “Brady. You’re. Not. Helping.”

The computer programmer starts chortling uncontrollably, slapping his knee all the while. Sighing, you turn your gaze to your (hopefully) more reasonable partner. “Just business. If anything, I felt the bad feelings in my stomach when I pushed some of her buttons…okay, bad analogy, but still.”

“Mngh,” Victoria grunts, kicking an errant pebble out of the way. “I mean, sure, you say that, but in every show I’ve watched, you’re either raising all kinds of death flags, or building a pedestal that’s gonna inevitably shatter. Getting too close to the mark? Very, very dangerous.”

You don’t frown, but you do tilt your head in an intellectually questioning gesture.

“Thanks…and I really do mean it. I appreciate the concern, but I think we should be fine.”

“If you say so, bossman,” Brady smiles as he straightens himself up and dusts his pants off. “So worst-case scenario if things hit the fan with your confidant?”

With ten minutes of crunch time to get back to the car before time runs out, the intrepid trio of yourself, Brady and Victoria scour the boardwalk for any more clues about the attacks. Though it’s hard work. This isn’t Lazy Susan’s, nor is it as full as it would be with the beach open, but there’s still a lot of people here checking out the sights.

Still, you remember what Fitz told you earlier and do your best to channel out the irrelevant shit from the relevant…

“…I heard that your nephew likes airplanes…”

“…we just bought you a bucket and pail…”

“…Kirino is best girl and no one can say otherwise…”

“…what do you mean you don’t have any seats…”

“…surf’s up tomorrow, dude! Finally gonna get back in the
water…”

“…you need to hit the red one to get the teddy bear, sweetie…”

“…don’t care what they say, I’m not getting it as a size twelve…”

“…bro, that girl has nice tits…”

“…if you truly believe in the Lord, you will all be saved…”

“…and that’s why Kuroneko belongs in the trash…”

“…twenty bucks says someone bites it tomorrow…”

“…no, you can’t have any more quarters for the arcade…”

“…we’re still short on lifeguards. Max is practically drowning in liquor…”

“…mom, stop taking pictures, we’re basically screaming FOB…”

“…girl, if you think he’s cheating on you, then dump his ungrateful ass…”

"...those Phi Alpha girls are nothing but trouble..."

“…your taste in waifus is shit. Ayase is best girl…”

“…fucked up, man, but I’ll raise you to a round of beer…”

“…open the beach up at ten o’clock. Have police standing by just in case…”

“…interested in renting a beach house? Well look no further…”

“…both of you are pathetic austists. Submit to the Saori Master Race…”

"...that one blonde Phi girl was so rude to the cashier..."

>Annoying street preacher is annoying

>Police and emergency responders will be on standby
>Phi Alpha girls are causing some trouble with locals
>Minami is best girl

You make it back to the parking spot to find Fitz and MacKay sitting on a nearby bench. Both perk up upon spotting you, and flag you down towards them.

Fitz swallows what looks like a soft pretzel down her throat before speaking, “So how’d it go?”

Brady snickers and Victoria’s mouth twists in a funny shape. You take it that’s your cue to answer in lieu of them. “It went well. Managed to get the contact information of the leader of Phi Alpha. You know, the girl Alyssa we heard at the crab shack? Ran into her on the beach.”

“And gave her a real ‘hands-on’ regarding the finer points of carpentry…” Brady mutters under his breath. “So hands on it involved the removal of-”

“Shut up.”

"...okay, then. From our end..." MacKay smiles, fiddling with his COMP. “We can safely confirm that there is demonic activity and that our operation isn’t a total bust. Alger was right all along.”

"Called it," You dryly respond. “How do you figure?”

“Division Three’s analysis of the local salt water sample came back via our CMail. And the report says that there’s a whole lot magnitite in the water,” MacKay explains. “Meaning that…”

“We’re either dealin’ with a really strong demon, or a big pack of the fuckers,” Fitz scowls. “I’m not sure which one is worse, to be honest.”

You yourself grimace. “Any other info?”

“Professor Mido’s Moblie Demon Fusion App is almost ready,” the priest recites from his COMP. “Other than that, what information we do have is probably best if we saved for private.”

You decide to debrief in the condo. Probably best to chillax while you can in the car. With the air condition jacked to the maximum and the seats leaned back as far as you can without compromising your foot on the pedal. And you’re fairly sure that you can get the scent of dried sweat out of the leather given enough air freshener and Resolve spray.

The silence of the condo greets you as you all make your way to the central family room, kicking off your shoes and throwing yourselves down on the furniture. Brady points absently in the air, snaps his fingers, and the air conditioning and ceiling fan come on with a slow rattle.

You clear your throat as you lean back into the recliner. “Now that we’re all ready, let’s exchange some information. I’d like to first recognize that the locals have shit taste in waifus. I mean, seriously. How can they think that Minami is best girl. I mean, the best girl is totally-”

“Hold the fuck up,” Brady cuts you off. “You…you watched that show? Are you kidding me? Am I being punked right now?”

“When I was in undergrad and there was nothing else to watch…yes, I did. Not the proudest moment of my life.”

“Okay,” Fitz declares, slamming her fist on the table, “Movin’ on from whatever the fuck you guys are talking about…aside from a few reports about some of the Phi Girls being total asshats to the outlet store owners and mom and pop shops, we didn’t get too much that we don’t already know.”

MacKay nods solemnly. “Indeed. Perhaps your day was more eventful, I take it?”

>You take a brief moment to explain what happened to you and Alyssa.

Fitz whistles. “Hot damn, Sawbones. Never pegged you as a ladykiller.”

Victoria rolls her eyes as Brady mimes gagging noises.

...you should probably take this moment to nip this in the bud.

>“Well what can I say? It comes natural to me.” [Suave]
>“It. Was. Just. Business.” [Stoic]
>“I’m no match for the demon in the beach, though.”[Sarcastic]

You see an opening you take it Fitz. Didn't you say as much? Besides I'm really not. I knew what those guys were talking about after all.

I'm usually not. Must be the mad gains from boot camp.

>>45209429
Sure. Anyways I'm passing out, g'nite everybody.

I know I said this last time but don't neglect the 'Disgracing the Governor by forcing him to shut down the charity' angle. Might be nothing, might be a motive. Wouldn't hurt to check if he has any political opponents that enjoy the occult.

You look Fitz straight into her eyes, and say in the most deadpan tone you can muster. “You see an opening, you take it. Didn’t you tell me that? Besides, I’m really not the ladykiller that those two are trying to make me out to be. It must’ve been the mad gains from boot camp. It’s a one-time thing that’s never going to happen again.”

“Gloots for the sloots.”

“Brady, I swear to Christ…”

“On a more serious note,” Victoria dryly says, cutting the both of you off, “It seems that there’s a shortage of lifeguards on the beach. Lots of the folks are really scared that something is going to happen tomorrow.”

“We’re in ‘Jaws feat. Demons’,” Fitz replies, “I know for a fact that somethin’s goin’ down tomorrow.”

“At ten in the morning,” You say after throwing a tissue box at Brady. “Which means we need to get there as early as we can to set up before all hell breaks loose.”

“Hold up,” Brady interrupts, sitting up straight. “Theory: politics could be involved. Remember how we said that the governor was facing flak from both those in favor of keeping the beach open and those that wanted it shut down? Think one of his opponents could be big in the occult?”

“A very plausible reason,” MacKay muses to himself. “Underhanded, of course, but nonetheless plausible. Men have killed for lesser reasons in politics over the course of American history.”

Victoria adds, “And more dangerous. Amateur demon-summoning rarely ends well for the practitioner. They usually end up like a stain on the wall if I remember reading that one file correctly.”

(cont.)
>>
“That case had the summoner spit-roast by a wooden spike. You’re thinking about a different case,” Brady mutters. “The one with nothing left except for a puddle-”

“Be that as it may,” You cut in, “We have a beach to scope out tomorrow. Let’s get our gear ready, and hit the sack early tonight. If Fitz is right and Victoria’s genre-savvy enough, then we’re gonna have a bad time tomorrow.”

Everyone nods their ascent and says their own affirmation. With that, the meeting is adjourned, and all of you head to your respective ways. Right now, you plan to…

>Hit the showers, hit the hay, go to sleep.
>Call Alyssa to confirm you’re showing up.

See, I TOLD you fuckers to send Brady LAST THREAD.

...Yes, timezones done fucked me over again. Catch you next thread.
>>
>>45212446
I think she's overreacting, but it's true that Adrian was looking pretty sleazy doing that.

But juggling around people so they only see the actions you want them to see is not healthy

Well, all in moderation. You COULD just vote right now, you know. Just in case timezones fuck you up again.
>>
>>45212631
Eh, thread's archived at this point and it seems hitting the hay is unanimous anyway.
I agree that -6 is a bit of an overreaction from a simple co-worker's perspective, but perhaps she had some romantic aspirations towards us. We DID ask her about a "date" that one time, after all.
>>
>>45212766
Yeah but we did tell Fitz to buy us a drink sometime which can constitute as a "date" yet she isn't disapproving when she heard the story or when we didn't go with her on the Boardwalk.

If Victoria is going to disapprove every time we do something without her and interact with another female in a suave like matter she'll be in the single digits no matter what we do since we have a damn job to do.

But I also think assigning numbers to character's demeanors is kinda dumb but that's just me.
>>
>>45213252
To be fair you don't have to flirt with everything that has tits to get info
>>
>>45213609
I know.

I'm more annoyed at the approval system. It's nice to see results from good choices, but I'm afraid people will start saying only what the characters want to hear for points and avoid options they deem 'trap' options that might lead to disapproval like >>45206293 instead of just playing the damn character.
>>
>>45213252
Except she didn't disagree when we went over to talk to the chick, only when we tried to put our James Bond on. It's not rocket science, anon.
>>
>>45213974
You're missing my point. I'm not talking about that instance anymore. More about how the system can and will change our mindsets of how we approach decisions.

Whatever no use bitching about it.
>>
>>45214084
To be fair most people try to avoid upsetting their coworkers. unless they're assholes, Which Adrian isn't.
>>
>>45214535
Its hard when one of your coworkers isn't quite mature yet, but there is room for character development I suppose.
>>
>>45214647
Well Brady is a computer nerd anime geek, he'll get over it eventually.
