“Hey, I’m learning. I know how to cook fried eggs now!”

“Wow, what a master chef you are!” Shizuka exclaims. She leans forward and pokes you on the forehead. “Takashi, are you concerned about me? Is it because I do all the work around the house?”

You pout. “So what if I am?”

She laughs again. “I’m glad you care about me. But you shouldn’t worry so much. I’m perfectly happy with taking care of you. You’re my little brother after all.”

“I…ah, never mind.” You sigh. “Nee-san, I want you to be happy.”

“I already am.” She says.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.” This time, she pats you on the head. “Because you and kaa-san are healthy and safe. It brings me joy more than anything else in the world.”

“Thanks, nee-san.”

“Don’t mention it, Takashi!” A devilish grin, perfect for the minions of Hell, appears on her face. “So, what about you? Have you found a girlfriend yet?”

Oh gods, you had a feeling this would happen. “I’m not talking about this.”

“Come on, I played my part. Didn’t meet another girl last week? That European transfer student. It seems like you’re quite popular with girls. My my, my cute little brother is quite the womanizer!”

[Eleven years ago…]

The first thing you see when you open your eyes is the piercing glare of the fluorescent lights. The first thing you hear is a mixture of hushed and worried voices elsewhere in the room. You twist your neck and feel your head hit something soft. It’s a pillow. You glance upwards and see a dull grey ceiling, separated into a grid of tiles. Your eyes catch other objects elsewhere in the room. A beeping monitor, drab white sheets, medicine bottles with fuzzy labels and neatly wrapped packages of bandages.

Ah, you realize with a jolt, this must be a hospital room.

A few seconds pass. The voices are getting louder. It’s making your head hurt. You’d tell them to shut up, but your voice box seems to be malfunctioning at present. Instead, you look over to the side to catch a glimpse. The occupants of the room are visible, if a little blurry. A small girl with blue hair tied in braids, several nurses, a powerfully built man wearing a suit and a short-haired lady in an office attire.

As for the rest of your body, it’s numb. It is as if an entire armory’s worth of painkiller needles have been fired into your body at once. You can barely raise your index finger.

“Wakui-san!” A shrill calls, coming from a nearby doctor, puts a stop to your thoughts. “The patient is awake!”

Instantly, all of the occupants have surrounded your table. They all are wearing expressions of varying degrees of distress. The blue-haired girl, in particular, has tear marks rolling down the side of her cheeks.

“Takashi! Takashi!” she wails, reaching out to grab your immobile hands. “Are you alright?”

“Quiet down, Shizuka!” A gruff voice bellows. It’s coming from the man in the suit. “Takashi must be in shock right now!”

“Let me go, tou-san!” The girl cries. “I have to know!”

You try to speak, but all you can manage is a gurgling sound from the back of your throat. It sounds like a puppy drowning.

“Takashi, drink this.” You find a plastic cup full of water being pressed to your lips by a nurse. “Poor dear, you must be thirsty…”

You drink greedily, smacking your lips once done. One of the nurses wipes away the residue from the side of your cheeks. Another one comes up to your side. It’s a male, dressed in white and holding a tablet. Said tablet is emitting a holographic display. You catch a glimpse of your mugshot depicted on the projected document.

“His vitals are all stable.” He says, shaking his head. “But, as for that…”

“Yes, we cannot be so certain…”

“What should we do, doctor?”

Questions are flying back and forth. They pass over your head like seagulls soaring over a great ocean. You can’t make heads or tails of it. Through the confusion, the blue-haired girl has slipped through their legs. She’s by your side, gripping your right hand in hers. It feels warm and soft.

“It’s me, Takashi!” she sniffles. “Your older sister, Shizuka. You…you really made us all worry! Do you know how much I cried? I thought you would never wake up...”

“Shizuka…” the woman in the office attire warns, but her relief is clear as the morning sun. “Don’t handle him, too roughly, okay?”

“I know, kaa-san!”

You don’t answer at first. You stare into the girl’s striking, jade eyes.

“It’s okay, though. I forgive you, Takashi. It was mostly my fault, anyway.” More tears are forming in the corner of her eyes. “You’ll get out of hospital and we’ll never think about the accident again. We’ll go and buy that udon you always liked. We can even take a trip to Funland together. It’s the middle of the second semester so it might be hard to convince kaa-san and tou-san to let us go, but I’ll find a way somehow. They might not let you on the rollercoaster, but the ice-cream is great…”

You remain silent, still thinking. Your jaw twitches. Strength is returning to it.

“Hey, Takashi. Say something. This is weird. Is something wrong with you? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

You open your mouth to ask the question burning at the forefront of your mind.

“Who are you?”

“Takashi, you look tired. Did you not sleep well?”

“No, I actually slept fine, nee-san. I just a really weird dream.”

“What was it about?”

“…I can’t remember.”

It’s yet another normal school day. You put on your uniform, eat breakfast and head out for Akumachi-Kirijo. This time, Celeste meets you in the elevator. The two of you make a silent agreement to walk to school together. It’s nothing big, just what best friends do on an average basis.

“So, how was the cosplay event yesterday?” You ask her.

“Pretty good! But really tiring. They made me serve drinks and food all day. At least none of the customers were creepy. I’ve heard horror stories about some of the more seedier cafes in Synth Central.”

“Did you ever get to cosplay?”

“Actually, I did!”

“What.”

“One of the cosplayers didn’t show up, so they forced me into being a replacement. Lucianne was insistent on me doing it, too. All I had to do was wear gothic lolita attire when serving food, though.”

“Somehow…I feel like I missed out on something important.”

“What was that, Takashi-kun?”

“Nothing.”

The two of you board the train. It rumbles as it powers along the magnetic rails to its destination. You and Celeste are lucky enough find two seats next to each other, which you reserve with the speed of a hundred leopards.

“So as I was saying earlier, that is not how truncus graphs work. The formula for them is one over—”

You pause. Someone is moving towards you. You can tell, because the passengers over on the right are muttering with indignation as the newcomer pushes through the carriage.

“No way, no way!”

It’s a guy with short black hair, a pale face and a grey eyes. He’s wearing a uniform with damaged sleeves and a worn book bag. He stands in front of you, staring down at you with a look of pure awe.

“Is it really you? Takashi Wakui?”

You stare back at him, your confusion obvious. He’s either oblivious to it or is pretending not to notice. He gives you the once over and breaks into a wide smile.

“Oh man, it is! Man, it’s been ages, Wakui!”

A minor headache had appeared at the base of your skull this morning, like a tick attaching itself to succulent cat flesh. It’s now getting more and more intense with every second. You do not appreciate this.

“You just disappeared out of nowhere! Where’d you go? And who’s the girl next to you?”

Okay, seriously. Time out. Who the hell is this guy?
