Jack yells something unintelligible before storming out of the room. He nearly takes the iron door of the armory right off the hinges with a sickening snap. That white-haired kid and Fritelli follow, maybe to prevent him from doing something stupid. Tuile stayed behind with you in the armory.

You didn't pay attention to what Jack was saying. The way he was gripping that flask on his hip drew your brief attention. You don't know what he keeps in it, but you do know what it does to people.

You are Wihak-
Your name is Kayda; angry, hungry, tired, and upset. That explains you right now.
Last night rivals more miserable nights you've had since becoming Greta's servant. The evil maid, Clair, woke you up when she sauntered in an hour past midnight. Your sleep ended when the castle came under attack and stormed your room. Thankfully, you've taken to hiding a lever-action beneath Greta's bed just in case, and easily mopped up.

A lever-action which Clair took away when she realized you had it. You liked that one, too.

You narrowly escaped once again minutes ago. A group of masked men made a rush straight for you in the training grounds. The replacement carbine you found unfortunately had a single shot less than you expected; allowing one of them to grab you by the arm!
You could have totally took them. It was just a fluke.

After that-
"Kayda, please, it's fine." Tuile runs her hand through your long hair.

"It really isn't!" You snap back at her. She squeezes tighter around your shoulders, and your eyes meet her sleeves.

After that attack, you felt a moment of weakness and broke down in tears. Jack carried you back to the armory.

You just feel so tiny, and powerless. Like you could be crushed in an instant.

Tuile seems uncomfortable to be here. Or maybe you're just wasting her time?

>T-thanks, I'm better now.
>Stay and talk a bit longer, please?
>Go find another rifle closer to your liking.
>Ask Tuile what to do
>Maybe you should go cry in your room.
>Other?

You gently pull away from her dress, but maintain a hold on her sleeve.
"S-stay a bit longer, please?" You try to compose yourself, "I won't take very long, I promise."

"Hmm? Okay. Take as much time as you need." She smiles and ruffles your hair.

She's calm, but she might just be playing a babysitter. You're sure she has important princess stuff to do.

You need to get your mind off of it.
There's a thud against your foot as you turn away from Tuile. It's the carbine you've been using.
Rotten thing.
All they had to do was include space for one more cartridge and you would have been just fine.

Whose idea was it to have a rifle that doesn't have a full set of shots in it?!

"Hey, you're pouting, are you okay?"
Eek! She noticed!

"N-no, I'm fine!" You bend over and pick up the carbine. "I don't like this weapon very much, I'm gonna go look for a better one."
"Okay! Sounds like a good idea."

You walk over to the rack of rifles and firearms. There's a gap left by the carbine several slots up. You reach to put it back in the slot, but find yourself just an inch too short.
That's when a hand gently grasps the gun and slots it back in the wooden pegs.

I could have done that, too.

"Thanks."
"Which one were you looking for?" Tuile takes one of the weapons off the pegs and checks it.

"Something, a little heavier. The carbine is too light and doesn't have enough shots."

Tuile points to a rack a few rows down. All the rifles here are a bit longer, but are clearly full-sized rifles

Which one do you want?

>How about that one, the bolt-action.
>I like lever actions more, give me a longer rifle.
>I'll carry a side-pistol from now on, it works for Cody, right?
>I like the Carbine's length, but just want more ammo for it.
>Does that one have a knife on barrel? Let me see that.

"Huh, does that one have a knife on the barrel?"
"Oh, that? Is she still pushing that thing?"

Tuile picks it up and racks the bolt back.

"Um." You touch the blade on the front. "Why does it have a knife here?"

"Oh, it's something Fritelli has been doing." She pulls the bolt back into place. "Fritelli thinks that when it comes to melee, reach is everything. So for a few months she was pushing having a regiment with these pointed rifles. No swords, no shields, just rifles with this thing on it." She turns it on its side. "I was like 'How are you gonna block arrows'? She couldn't answer me. Pfft."

"I don't know enough about the army to know what any of that means." You answer honestly.

"Fair enough." She goes to put it back, but you pull on her dress.

"Can I just try it? I'm worried about being grabbed again, and that might be useful."

"You can have it." Tuile smiles. "Maybe if you take it, Fritelli will forget about the whole silly plan."

She hands you the rifle, and you feel the weight in your hands. It's balanced just fine, but you do admit that the extra length makes it a little unwieldy.

"Try holding it like a staff." Tuile helpfully instructs.

You grab it like a long piece of burchwood, and pull it close to you.
Oh, THAT'S how you're supposed to use that knife.

Huh, it's like a.. spear.. and a gun. That's crazy.

"I'm gonna go fire it a couple times." You head toward the door.
A hand grabs your shoulder.

"Stay near the knights, don't go to the far targets, in fact; ask Pomelo if she'll walk with you."
What?! She's not my mother! She can't tell me what to-

"Okay." You concede.
"Great! Be careful." She pats my back.

Hmph.

You head toward the training yard, and sure enough the knights are investigating the incident. Guards have been doubled, and parts of the yard are closed off.

Except one target, you could probably get a few shots off on that without anyone noticing.

..Oh okay, you'll listen to Tuile.
"Um." You pull at a brown-haired knight's sleeve.
"Huh? Oh! Kayda! Are you hurt!?" Pomelo kneels down to your eyelevel.

"No, no. I was gonna try this gun, is that okay? Can you stay with me for a minute?"
She eyes you with suspicion, "Is Fritelli making you use that stupid gun?"

"What? No."
"Oh, okay." She sighs.

You find a clean target and angle it away from the crowd.

Several shots ring out, each of them striking true. This isn't a bad rifle. It's a little long with the blade on the end, but it still does it job marvelously.
It's not as good as the rifle that was confiscated, but it's definitely a runner-up.

"Whatd'ya think?" Pomelo smiles.
"It feels nice." That's all you can say about it, really. You're not a connoisseur in firearms. You were really only trained in rifles to hunt rabbits.

"Hey!" The black-haired knight, Bennet you think his name is? "Pomelo! Get Kayda and follow me! There's trouble!"
"What is it?!"
"They can't find Yuuki!"

>Cold sweat.

They can't find Yuuki.
Yuuki's missing.

Yuuki
Is
Missing.

"Sis is missing?"
"Who?" Pomelo turns around, "No, Yuuki is missing."

"Ah- Yeah."
That's who you meant, yeah.

Wow, is it cold out here?
The temperature must have just dropped like, a whole bunch.

You're almost shivering.

Pomelo starts to walk off, and you're right behind her. So much so that you're almost inside of her cape.
You try to give her some room, you don't want to trip her or something.

At the same time.
YUUKI
IS
MISSING!

"H-Hey-" You walk up alongside Pomelo. "What are you gonna do?!"

"Form a search party, go find Yuuki." She sighs. "This better not be related to those assholes that keep attacking."

"Well.."

>"Let me come with you!"
>"I'm going on ahead!"
>Go on ahead, don't tell anyone.

"Pomelo! Let me come with you!"

You pull on her sleeve, and she returns a blank stare.
"Weren't you almost kidnapped? Shouldn't you stay here and let us-"

"No, kidnapped or not, I'm still a hero." You can feel yourself glaring at her. "I want to go with you."

Pomelo seems worried, like if she accepts; someone might yell at her.
Her head snaps around to look at something, and then she smiles.

"Okay. Get to the stables in five minutes, any longer and we leave without you."

Your eyes track to the point Pomelo must have been looking toward.
All you see is a puff of auburn tail-hair disappear around a corner.

--

Pomelo adjusts her saddle, and gently lifts you onto the seat in front of her.
You don't like these bird-things. You would rather prefer to ride on horses.

"Okay, what's the search plan?" That green-haired cat knight yanks at the reigns.
"I have a lead." Bennet snaps his livestock into action. "It's in town, near the bar."

"Pfft, if it's near the bar Jack's probably already on it." Pomelo says, smiling.

She's laughing but that's probably not too far from the truth.

Your entourage trots out the front gates and near the forest. Bennet drags everyone to a halt.

"Hang on." He commands.

There's something out there, watching you. Pomelo readies her sword, Felice stands on her saddle.

It's so close you can almost feel it.

It's out there, watching you.
Yet, with perfect clarity, you can sense it.

It's a strange feeling. That moment where your mind feels fuzzy, and sharpness envelopes the light.

Your father used to tell you of how he would feel sometimes when he was hunting. As if, for a brief moment, he felt connected. A part of him branched to the earth, the trees, the stones, the sky. They would tell him things, their secrets.

When the traders used to ask him, 'How do you do it?'; his response would be to laugh and say 'I have friends'.

You find it silly. It's silly to even think about it as anything other than stories he would tell you when you were on the precipice of sleep.

CLACK
Your bolt pulls back, and slides the chamber into place.

BANG!

In the periphial of your vision, rabbits, foxes, prey scurries along the dew-fallen forest floor. They walk on two legs, with care, and vigilance.

CLACK

You are akin to a spirit. Floating with grace above the earth. Your ears see with more aptitude than even the eyes of an owl.

BANG!

Somewhere, there is a giant; raining lightning from his mountain.

CLACK

Casting its wrath among the tormented of the land. They scurry, and flee; their presence only becoming more known as time become palatable.

BANG! CLACK, BANG! CLACK, BANG! CLACK, BANG! CLACK-

Your father was a very silly man, with a lot of tall tales.

BANG!

Color returns to your vision, the sound of the last few seconds plays in your head in fast motion. The screams, the confusion, the shadows of the forest fluffing into catlike spheres.

"Kayda, What the!?"
"Holy shit!"
"Wow!"

Except that last guy. He was a bit hardier than the masked men who were his cohorts.
He stumbles, clutching a section of his torn clothing, before collapsing into the mud.

"Kayda! That was amazing!" Pomelo grabs your shoulders and shakes them. "Way to go, how-"
"No." You say, worry in your voice.

That last guy, you know him not as a catman. He's a Konditorei general.

We're bringing them right to the edge of the barrier, then we interrogate them while making it VERY fucking clear that the slightest hint of disrespect or trying to be tricksy gets them moved out of the "you only turn into fluffballs when you should have the shit beaten out of you" area and right into "time for the beatings to really fucking hurt"
