The automated, almost excruciatingly cheerful voice of the train announcer is swallowed up in a sea of chatter. A jumble of mismatched words—shouts of indignation, frustrated mumbles related to work and joyful conversation—circle around you and Celeste like a persistent, gigantic swarm of flies. You ignore them, just as you ignore the omnipresent voice of the city blaring outside the window when you tuck yourself into bed. Instead, you stare at the boy standing in front of you, with a slight frown and an eyebrow raised.

“Oh man, it is! Man, it’s been ages, Wakui!”

Celeste looks back and forth between you and the boy, a bemused and polite grin twitching at her lips. It’s clear she’s moments away from asking you a predictable question, possibly licking her lemon-flavored lollipop as she does so.

“You just disappeared out of nowhere!” The boy continues to ramble on, the excited tone in his voice ringing through the cramped carriage. Next to him, a woman in a tracksuit purses her lips in the same manner a teacher would react to a stack of poorly-written essays. “Where’d you go? And who’s the girl next to you?”

If only you could answer her, because you also have no idea who this guy is. You feel like a sheep who was introduced to a new flock, only to find the rest of the sheep were wolves in disguise.

“Uh, I’m sorry, but who are you again?” You say the honest truth. Surely, if you tell him that, he won’t flip out, right?

“Whaaaat?” The boy exclaims, making the kind of exaggerated facial expressions reserved for cartoon clows, “You really don’t remember me? It’s me, Chikashi Yone!”

“No, I still don’t know who are.” You reply. Geez, this guy talks a lot. He’s almost as boisterous as Kaz. “Uh, did we go to the same school together?”

“Yeah! Marineki High! I sat next to you in first year of high school! Does it ring a bell?”

Oh, that place. Your first high school, mixed in both gender and Persona acquisition status. You recall it was fairly average, but you had been an average ordinary back then, so the shoe fitted. You frown and try to dreg up recollection from the pool of memories. All that surfaces is a few blurry scenes of smelly toilets, uninteresting lectures and phallic graffiti on the walls near the back.

“Nope.” You say.

“Seriously? What the hell, Wakui…” Chikashi Yone moans. “Did you hit your head on something? And is that the uniform of Akumachi-Kirijo Academy? Are you going there, for real?”

“What about it?”

“You actually summoned your Persona? At the age of sixteen?”

Your eyebrow twitches. “It’s a long story.”

“You lucky son of a bitch!” Chikashi complains, now looking like a dog whose owner has refused a second helping of tinned food. “Isn’t it supposed to be near impossible at that age? How did you do it?”

“Like I said, it’s a long story.” One that this guy would never believe.

Before the conversation can continue any further, the train slides to a halt. The automated door slide open with a hiss and passengers file in and out.

“Oh nuts, this is my stop!” Chikashi yells over the hubbub. “See you later, Wakui!”

He disappears into the crowd and is quickly swallowed up and out of the sight. Celeste turns to face you, still confused.

“Takashi-kun, do you really not remember much about your past?”

“I find that hard to believe, Takashi-kun.” Celeste replies.

“The part of the guy making stuff up?”

“No, you not being social.” She says. “You’ve joined all those clubs and you’ve made friends with me, Akikazu, Fumika, Takauji, Kanami and Kanade.”

You grumble and shift in your seat. “I think getting…you know sort of changed my attitude towards life. Before I was really hesitant of doing new stuff because I thought people would laugh at me. Now I’m a Player in the most dangerous immersive reality video game known to man. Shadows could rip my body apart and feast on my soul. The consequences in the real world feel like nothing.”

“Or maybe because you found fun in being with your friends and trying out new things.” Celeste raises her finger, smiling.

“Well, I joined the martial arts club because I thought I needed to get stronger. Then it sorta snowballed from there.” You grin. “But yeah, you might be right.”

Celeste giggles and sticks out her tongue. “See? I told you so.”

“You didn’t tell me anything!” You slump in your seat. “Hey, did I act like a dick towards that Yone guy?”

“I wouldn’t put it that way, but you were a little rude.”

“Yeah, thought as much. Okay, if I see him again, I guess I’ll apologize.”

The train has halted. District 2 awaits. Still chatting, you and Celeste climb out of your seats and head towards the exit.

Classroom 5-3 is silent, apart from the drone-like warbles of the lecturer and the scratching of dozens of pacers and pens. You growl in your seat as a particular nasty problem comes up on the worksheet like a troll under a proverbial bridge. After a few minutes of thinking, you manage to scribble down what you believe is a passable answer and move onto to the next section.

“Authors will often appeal to something in their articles, such as ethics or logic. Identifying these appeals is crucial to understand their persuasion methods…”

Out of curiosity, you sneak a glance to the rest of your classmates. Celeste is powering through the exercises like it’s no big deal. Fumika looks bored, as usual. Takauji seems alright, despite an air of discomfort surrounding him stemming from being sandwiched being two girls who just happen to be mortal enemies. Somehow, Kanade and Kanami are performing passive-aggressive gestures even while working silently and not looking at each other. You feel this deserves some kind of award.

You look over to the left. Akikazu has come to Japanese class for once and is snarling at a section on his paper. Yeah, that’s a tough nut to crack. He might not finish before the end of class.

You look to the right. Aria’s delicate hands are trembling as she gazes down at her own worksheet. It’s half done, but her answers aren’t what one would call substantial. You suspect her troubles arise from not understanding the language all that well. Does she not know that Japanese second language is a thing?

Just a few more easy questions and you’ll be finished. You have the power to help either one of your friends. Well, you don’t actually consider Aria to be a friend like Celeste or Akikazu but that’s beside the point. What will you do? Will you help them? You only have time to help one and the lecturer is a hard ass towardswhisperers in his class…

You watch her open it up and read over it. Then she resumes writing, this time with a little more vigor. She hasn’t thanked you or anything, but it’s the thought that counts.

Then you scan across the classroom from signs of anybody watching. All is clear. You lean over to Akikazu and whisper in his ear.

“The answer is this…”

“What?” he hisses.

“Shut up and listen to me!”

It’s too late. The lecturer notices you. He glares at you and Akikazu with his beady black eyes over his prickly white mustache. “Wakui and Osaragi, you two seem to be having a riveting conversation. Care to share it with me once class is over?”

You opt not to reply, lest you dig this grave even further and discover the tomb of the ancient lich. Akikazu scowls and give his worksheet a glower so intense it threatens to catch fire. At least he seems to have gotten the hang of the question. Your work here is done, but at what cost? A couple of your fellow classmates are giggling. Others are giving you and Akikazu filthy looks. What’s their problem?

You notice a scrap of paper has landed on your desk. You open it and find words written on it in very neat handwriting.

‘Thank you, Takashi.’

You stare at it. Then you tear off another piece of a paper, write on it and toss it towards Aria's desk.

‘No problem.’

“Hey, Takashi! Glad you came.” He smiles, running up to you with a bottle of water in his hands. “Ready to work up a good sweat?”

You nod. “Lead the way, coach.”

“You got it!” He flashes you a thumbs up. “Come over here.”

He drags you over to an empty section of the floor. The two of you sit down on it. “So, has anything happened lately?” you ask.

“Nah, not really.” He replies. “Been training and helping out as usual. I tried fighting against the club captain, but lost. He’s not a member of the Elite Twelve for nothing, hahaha. But what about you?”

“What about me?”

“You’ve gotten stronger.” He cocks his head and cracks his knuckles. “You look a bit more buff and there isn’t as much body fat on you as before. Now I’m definitely convinced you’re doing secret training.”

He’s not exactly wrong, a part of you says. You decide not to reply.

“Alright, Takashi! I’ve got a great idea!” He stands up and cracks his knuckles. Another grin has popped onto him, except it’s more predatory than amicable. “Let’s spar!”

“What?” You gasp.

“You haven’t been here in a while and I need to get a good sense of your skill. What better way than having a good fight?” He grins again. “Give me your best shot!”

Seeing no other option, you pick yourself up and raise your fists. Then you rush at Takauji…

Between this and our duel with Celeste I think it's starting to look like Takashi has no idea how to fight non-lethally. “It’s for getting into a good position for an attack. When I was dodging around your attacks, I actually had a lot of openings for attack. I just didn’t use them because this isn’t a real fight.”

“So what do I do, then?”

He disappears in a blur. Before you can react, he’s tapped you on the shoulder. You spin around and he’s gone.

“Okay, that’s the last of the mats. Good work today, Takashi.” Takauji slams the door to the storage room. “Come on, I’ll walk you to the front gate.”

“I think that might have to wait for a bit.” You point to the floor entrance. Five seconds ago, it had been devoid of students. Now a girl with short brown hair and a shiny school badge attached to her blazer is striding across the room. Also, she doesn’t look happy at all.

You bid Takauji goodbye, anxiety growing in the pit of your stomach. Well, he does has a point. He was stuck in the middle of a cold war for the entirety of last year, so he’s probably found ways to cope. It still doesn’t reassure you much. In any case, you take the train home.
