Raising the wine bottle to your lips, you take a long draught of its contents. The sweetness of the wine offers momentary reprieve from the increasingly dour conversation. Honestly you're a little baffled by the idea that Darzi, of all people, thinks herself useless. To you she's proven indispensable. She serves as, if not necessarily the moral center of your party, then certainly as the voice of reason among you.

Come to think of it, she really is the only voice of reason. Profectus seems too weak willed to speak against your fool notions, and Fulvia is very nearly incapable of doing so. Chryssa barely speaks at all, and since your falling out she seems even more withdrawn than she was upon your first meeting. Of course there's Mortia and Thaddeus, but neither of them seem like moral exemplars and both are nearly as reckless as you are. Then Zahak is but a child, and a highly impressionable at that.

Ultimately you sigh and offer the bottle back to Darzi. She takes it gratefully but doesn't drink, resting it instead against the swell of her hip. Spurred on by the warm glow of mild intoxication you fold your arms in front of your chest and adopt a mild, conciliatory tone. “Darzi, I'm going to be very honest with you for a moment. You're the only other person I'd trust to actually lead the party in my absence. You're the only one strong willed enough to take the reigns of command, and the only one smart enough not to get everyone killed.”

You hold up a finger, interrupting her before she gets the chance to speak. “And, I might add, for the most part what we do doesn't involve combat. It might be the case that I make a lot of challenges seem trivial, and it's true that despite routinely making gross errors in judgment I'm usually skilled enough to avoid major consequences. However, I wouldn't exactly call myself likable. Sure I can be persuasive, but let's not dance around the issue: I'm an ass.”

“Without you, Chryssa would've put an arrow through my head a long time ago. Without you, I doubt most of the party would consider one another friends. Without you, Darzi, I'd probably be an even more abrasive madman than I currently am. You bind the party together just as I determine its course. You're as indispensable to me as a man's limbs.”

Darzi nervously drinks from the shared bottle of wine, wiping her mouth on her sleeve when she's done. You think she might be flushed, but that could well simply be the alcohol. “I suppose there's some truth to that.” She admits, almost grudgingly. “But I want to be more than just the party's glorified mother. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the kind words, but I'm a warrior at heart. Fighting is what I know and it's what I enjoy most.”

She offers you the wine, and though you accept it you choose not to drink for the moment. Instead you wrap an arm around Darzi's shoulders and set off with her through the dimly lit hallways which populate the recesses of your family palace. “Then you know what I'd suggest, Darzi?” You pause to take a drink, before pressing the bottle back into her hands. “Take another look through Sadik's cart, find a weapon you like, and spend some of that vast wealth you've built up over the course of our adventures together. It does you little good weighing down the carriage.”

Darzi frowns, casting a wary glance at your hand on her shoulder but making no move to distance herself. “Perhaps I'll do just that, but I'd like to improve my own talents as well. Life, I've decided, is wasted if one does not constantly strive to improve themselves, and I cannot escape the sense that my own advancement has stagnated both in terms of my magical prowess and my skill at arms.”

That's probably at least partially your fault. You've had a sense for some time now that your companions have been struggling in their studies of magic, but you haven't exactly done much to help them through it. “It's to be expected, Darzi. Inborn talent will only take you so far in terms of magical skill. You need a teacher, and though I'm the natural choice I've neglected not only your advancement, but Profectus and Chryssa's as well. The entire party's really. I'd like to change that but I tend to forget amidst all the constant scrambling from crises to crises.”

You've managed to find your way back to the more frequented reaches of the palace, the stairwell which leads to your party's rooms just up ahead and the foyer a few turns beyond. Darzi raises the wine bottle to her lips and drinks deeply, adopting a thoughtful expression as she passes it back to you. You've finished more than half its contents between the two of you. “Well, for now at least we seem to have achieved momentary peace, though I doubt it will last more than a few days. Perhaps you ought to get a head start on our training before everything inevitably falls apart.”

>A fine idea. Suggest the two of you retreat to your rooms and meditate on forms together.
>Why limit it to just you and Darzi? Rope in everyone, save Profectus of course. You won't be able to meditate on forms, but that's not so important.
>You really think it would be useful to get the party together and just go over the basics of channeling and magic with them.
>While it's a fine idea, you should wait for Profectus to wake up before engaging in any sort of party-wide meditation. For now collect Mortia and get her name cleared.

Do this now because it's an opportunate time, we can at least teach her some basic effect/meta or just check to see what her problem is. Maybe do a common battle trance to advance both her magic and our marsala ve.

Chryssa and Darzi vaguely do but they still has some difficulty with it. Prof has only the slightest of ideas. Mortia grasp it fully, as does Zahak due to simply being a dragon. Fulvia is also perfectly capable of it.

Though, to be honest, I've had trouble conceiving of a way to illustrate Vatis employing vys channeling without inundating the thread with rolls. Early on I think I did a roll against system, but that got scrapped at some point.

Seems like there's a couple people in favor of meditating with Darzi now, and then meditating upon the basics of vys channeling and magical study once Profectus wakes up. That's probably what I'll go with.

Let's get this out of the way now while I start writing.

That would be an outgrowth of just meditating upon Fire magic.

I'm going to assume that you wear the Forest King's Crown. Darzi only has to pass a DC 15, so even with her mods she should manage it. Mik has to pass a DC 25, which should be pretty simple for him.

ROOOOOOOLL 3d10+18 (+2 from Vatis, +4 from Forest King's Crown, +4 from A Terrible Thing to Waste, +4 from Meditation upon Forms, +2 from Affinity Bonus, +2 from Masterful Assistance) vs DC 25 (Base 25)

You peer briefly into the bottle before taking another swill of its contents. There's some wisdom to what Darzi suggest, and it would seem a tad hypocritical to complain about hardly ever getting the opportunity and then turn it down when it presents itself. “I suppose I've nothing better to do this evening, so why not? We'll adjourn to change into suitable clothing, and then meet in my room.”

Darzi seems skeptical. “Are you sure that's wise? Our suites are spacious, sure, but all the furniture and decoration would surely prove a hazard while going through the more energetic forms of Marsala Ve.”

That's true, you wouldn't want to shatter any furniture during a kick. On the other hand, if you wish to meditate upon Nature magic then perhaps it would be beneficial to include obstacles. “Actually, I was thinking we ought to meditate upon Nature magic. Considering we're journeying into Elaudia. Having some obstacles to avoid might help with you focus upon the extrasensory aspects of the discipline.”

Darzi seems to accept this reasoning, and together you ascend the stairs towards the hall which houses your party. She vanishes into her own room, and you into yours. You take the opportunity to shed your boots and your cloak, and change into a shirt that doesn't have a dozen holes bored through the back.

However, your partner is not so quick to arrive. You take the opportunity to start moving furniture, creating a space mostly cleared of hazards, though you leave a few obstacles scattered about just for the sake of it. You're considering what to do with an antique vase which previously decorated a chest of drawers when finally you hear a knock at your door. In the end, you decide to leave it where it is before answering.“It's unlocked.”
(1/3)
>>
Darzi enters dressed much the same as she was before, though she's shed her armor and you think she might have rinsed her hair free of any sweat. You think you might smell a bit of rose water, but it's a subtle scent. You might simply be imagining it. Regardless you're here for a purpose, you skip the pleasantries. “Now, I want you to focus on expanding your senses into the world around you. Once you fall into the rhythm of the forms, try to separate yourself from your physical body and just soak in the sensations of the world around you.”

You'll spare her the tedious explanation of how exactly Nature magic works, you don't think she has any current understanding of the practice so going into any great detail may just end up confusing her. “I'll be helping you along when I can, so don't worry too much about knocking anything over.”

She nods her head brusquely, but as you turn to assume the first form of Marsala Ve she poses a question. “Before we begin, I though Nature magic only dealed with the living. How am I to recognize the obstacles then if they're not alive?”

You straighten, briefly casting about to try and recall where you'd placed the wine bottle but coming up short. “Well, to be brief Nature Magic doesn't necessarily deal with living things, it deals with vys, the mind, and the soul. At least, that's what I'd theorize. Of course vys, the mind, and the soul are all present within living beings, but vys is also present in all things to some limited extent. Thus, you can usually determine the presence of inanimate objects by the contrast between the presence of vys within the object, and the ambient vys in your surroundings.”
(2/3)
>>
>>45399550
Shaping art is true magic.
>>
Darzi seems to grasp what you're getting at, and the two of you quickly enter the first stance of Marsala Ve. As you begin to move through the ninety-six forms in series, you close your eyes and focus on letting your consciousness drift away. You become aware of your heart pounding in your chest, and of the blood running through your veins. It seems to flood through your legs, and then with each sweeping kick or stomp of your foot flow up through your abdomen and back to your heart.

As you slip deeper into your trance you become aware of a second heartbeat, Darzi's body moving almost in exact mimicry of your own. At least, that is your initial assessment. As she comes into sharper focus, the vys of her reserves glowing a soft green, you realize that her motions are more controlled than your own. Your kicks are sloppy in comparison, your punches lacking the same weight she can imbue in hers.

You study her motions and slowly try to bring your own to mimic hers, but the more precise you try to be the more you hesitate and when you try to carry out the forms with the same fluidity as she does you wind up sacrificing discipline and consistency.

Just as you struggle with the martial aspect of the meditation, Darzi seems to struggle with the magical. Her vys coils around itself, released only in erratic burst and rather inefficiently at that. You struggle for a moment to think of how you might help, but then an idea occurs. You focus on clearing our mind and allow yourself to slip yet deeper into your trance, beyond the ebb and flow of ambient vys.

(3/4)
>>
The souls of the populace of Nazir come slowly into view, forming a thousand shifting constellations. You focus on the nearest to your own, Darzi's no doubt, and channel Nature magic. Your thoughts brush across Darzi's own, ripples flow across the surface of the husk. You focus on sharing with her your perception of the world, and the ripples subside. Instead a series of canyons, valleys, and protrusions form upon the husk, before ultimately it assumes its typical, flattened appearance.

You continue to go through the motions, until finally you conclude upon the ninety-sixth form, merely a variant of the first. If you wished you could start the cycle again, probably for the fourth or fifth time, but instead you allow yourself to slowly awaken. When finally your eyes snap open, you're pleased to find that you've managed to avoid shattering any of your brother's valuables over the course of the meditation.

You feel you learned something from all this, though you struggle to put it into words. It's clear now that Nature Magic does have some sort of influence upon the soul, though you're not certain what exactly the nature of that influence is exactly. If you were forced to guess merely upon what you've just observed, you'd say Nature magic may be able to more directly manipulate the soul than Metal or Earth, and in a manner that likely isn't destructive.

Darzi awakens with a start, balanced with one leg extended nearly straight in the air. She brings it down hard, her heel touching the carpet and barely making a sound. In combat, that would have been a blow hard enough to crush a man's skull. Watching her flow into the next form, a low kick aimed at knocking an opponent off balance, it strikes you how easily one might mistake the forms of Marsala Ve for some elaborate and particularly violent dance given the right context.

Finally she allows herself to rest, her short, loose robe clinging tightly to the swell of her breast and flat of her abdomen. You're in little better shape, your shirt is soaked through completely. Come to think of it, this has been a particularly bad day for your clothing. Your robes got burnt to ash, and then one of your shirts got poked full of holes. Now this one will need a wash.

She turns to you excitedly, an eager gleam in her eyes and pleasant flush to her cheeks. “That was amazing! It was like discovering an entirely new sense I thought I'd lacked. I was standing alone in a cloud of green, the room sketched out around me in shadows and light.”

You remember the first time you used Nature magic. It's a fascinating experience, you won't deny. However, as you've grown more and more proficient you've noticed that the green tinge the world adopts is slowly fading away. Perhaps as a result of your learning to channel vys more efficiently.

You know, this is actually sort of intimate isn't it? Just a man and a woman, alone together in a bedroom drenched with sweat and lightly dressed. Not to mention Darzi doesn't seem to be wearing much of anything underneath her clothes. Her breast certainly aren't bound, and the loose silk of her pants clings tightly to her thighs, offering the merest suggestion of what might lie between.

Darzi snaps her fingers, and only then do you realize you're staring. “Pani's tits, Mik. You look like you're trying to burn the image into memory. Not like you haven't seen it already.” Her tone is scolding, but only gently. You don't get the impression she actually minds.

All the same you look away, taking the opportunity to push some of your hair out of your eyes. You need to start tying your hair back, it gets everywhere. “On the contrary, I could hardly see a thing in the baths at the estate. The steam was too thick for me to get a good look, though I'm sure you got quite the eye full.”

She scoffs. “As if I had any choice in the matter, you were waving the thing around so proudly only the blind could have missed it.”

You enjoy these little exchanges, harmless as they are. Still, you want to make sure Mortia isn't going to get hauled off to your Brother's dungeons in the night and ensure Profectus hasn't died in his sleep. You can't exactly afford to stand around flirting. You step forward, resting a hand companionably on Darzi's bicep. “As much as I'd like to continue this conversation about my manhood, I do have other things to attend to this evening. If you'll meet me in the baths later, perhaps we can discuss it at greater length.”

(1/2)
>>
Darzi jabs you lightly in the ribs. “That was a shitty pun and you're well aware of it. Besides, I've already seen how that conversation played out between you and that woman in Anthus.”

You smirk, slipping past her to collect your cloak. “Jealousy doesn't suit you, Darzi. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to change.”

She doesn't get the opportunity to respond, because with those parting words you adjourn to your bedroom. You quickly rinse out your hair with water conjured from your surroundings and extract a clean shirt from your cloak, donning your black and silver robes for good measure, and by the time you reemerge into the sitting room Darzi's beat her retreat.

Reaching out through the brooches, you allow your mind to touch upon the vast and unknowable form of Fulvia's own. Her thoughts are as opaque as usual. {How is Profectus doing? I haven't really had the chance to check on him since our return from the underground.}

Her response is prompt, it's almost like she was expecting your question. {He is doing well, better even than you were when you indulged in the drug. I believe this is due to the artifact he has implanted in his chest. Though his heart beat is faint, and his breathing irregular, neither have stopped as of yet. I remain by his side to monitor the situation}

That resolved, you briefly try to determine if Mortia is still awake. Night has well and truly fallen at this point, but you don't actually know the time. Unfortunately as your thoughts drift through her own you can catch only brief snatches of subdued activity. She's fast asleep.

It's probably best to just let her sleep. She's not exactly a morning person, and that's after a full night's rest. She'd probably be barely conscious if woken prematurely. You pause briefly at Darzi's door, wondering if you ought to leave her some of the books and scrolls you've already finished reading to help her along. You have several metamagic scrolls she might benefit from, and that strange book which described the nature of reality in rather crass terms.

Looking back at it now, with your greater knowledge, you're not really sure how accurate it was. Of course so much of what it discussed was obfuscated by the analogy of having one's way with a maid. It seemed to accurately discuss the structure of the separation between the base reality and the void, but it was fairly lacking in substance.

It probably doesn't really matter either way, she'll no doubt glean something useful from it. You set it down by her door and stack four scrolls next to it, the one's you've already finished. She should spot them next time she leaves her room. That done you set off for the stairs at the end of the hall, beginning your ascent towards your brother's suite of rooms.

>>
As you reach the landing, you're greeted by two guards stationed by the door to your brother's suite of rooms. They nod to you in greeting, one pulling the door open for you. Much to your surprise, your brother is still awake. He sits at his desk with a lantern burning by his side, papers scattered across his desk. He's been drinking as well, it looks like he's already on his second bottle of wine.

He only glances up from the page as you ascend the steps towards his desk, the orb which connected you to the Paramatma hovering silently behind him. “Mikhael, I was wondering when I'd next see you.” His speech is slurred, but only mildly. He gestures to a seat across from him as you come to stand before his desk. “Sit down, I've just been reading the Demir's ultimatum.”

You slide into the chair, making yourself comfortable. It's perhaps a tad overstuffed, but very comfortable. Part of you wonders about this ultimatum, but your brother doesn't exactly seem forthcoming with details.

You raise an eyebrow, curiosity getting the better of you. “I can only imagine the news is less than spectacular, if you're already this deep in your cups.”

He glances up from the paper, frowning. “Less than spectacular is an understatement, dear brother. They've kidnapped our niece, Safiyyah's daughter you understand. They haven't made any overt threats and it's all hidden behind very flowery language, but the gist of it is they'll release our niece if we release their grandmother.”

He shakes his head, pushing the paper across to you. “We have the advantage, obviously. Malika is far more valuable to the Demirs than some-” He waves a hand searchingly through the air. “Thirteen? Fourteen? I think she'd be around that age now. Well, point is a teenager isn't nearly so valuable as the head of their dynasty in all but name.”

You read through the letter, and it's much as your brother described. The Demirs 'discovered' your niece 'wandering through the streets of Marqash'. They 'escorted her to their estate', purely for her own safety of course. You're sure they're treating her well, this type of thing isn't terribly unusual amongst the nobility of the Shahdom. However, it does put you in a bit of a tight spot. Your older sister has always been a gentle sort, and you've little doubt that she's frantic after the disappearance of her daughter.
(1/2)
>>
On the other hand, this girl isn't even a main line descendant of the Abdul-Hakim clan. Actually, she's not even in the Abdul-Hakim clan to begin with. The one they should be negotiating with is your sister's husband, not your brother. It's pretty clear that they're scrambling for any sort of leverage they can hold over your family, and coming up pretty short from the looks of it.

You fold one leg over the other, sinking deeper into the overstuffed chair as you consider your options. This is a girl you don't even know, a girl that you've never met. The Demirs have nothing over you and they're trying to make it seem like something. Still, it's an opportunity to flex your family's muscle abroad. You could ride in on Zahak, scare the living crap out of the Demirs, and return your niece to her rightful home. Probably all in the space of an afternoon.

Your sister's husband, Faris you think his name was, would owe you a favor. As would the entire Al-Misra clan by extension. They're a Marzban family, controlling the southernmost fort currently in the Shahdom's possession. Typically an Emir would gain little by wedding into a family of Marzban, but the Marqash branch is extremely prestigious. They wield a significant amount of power within the city, and their soldiers are considered to be amongst the best trained in the realm.

This is in large part due to your sister's husband, the Hammer of Tel Hareb as the common folk call him. His campaign extended the territory of the Satrap immensely, and brought the border within two days' journey of Selepp. He's been a close ally of your family for more than a decade, though you can't profess to know much about the man. You've never met him except for perhaps briefly at your sister's wedding.

In the end you decide you'll at least offer to deal with the matter. It's not like you're pressed for time, and you feel fairly confident that the Demirs wouldn't dare to actually hurt her. “Well, Zaahir. If you'd like I could send word to Master Karim in El-Amin. He could, in turn, pass the information along to our father. Of course, with Zahak at my disposal Marqash is only a few hours away. I could be there tomorrow evening if I left around noon.”
(1/2)
>>
Your brother scrunches his brow together. “I appreciate the offer to communicate this to our father, I'm sure that artifact of yours is far more expedient than simply sending a messenger across the bay, but are you sure about resolving it yourself? One man against an entire contingent of house guards aren't what I'd call good odds.”

You grin wide, folding your hands in your lap. “Not one man, a Grandmaster Vatis and his draconic son. Imagine for a moment that you didn't know me. That I simply descended from the sky on dragon back in the courtyard, claiming you kidnapped my niece and that I'd burn this palace to the ground lest you hand her over. Would you seriously tell the man riding a dragon to stuff it up his ass?”

Zaahir leans back in his chair, rubbing his chin contemplatively. “You know, you make a good point. I mean, a palace like this is expensive. Easier to just hand over the girl than repair whatever inevitable damage a fight would cause. Still, let's call father and see what he thinks of the idea.”

You find that agreeable enough, and reaching out through the brooches your thoughts brush against those of your former Master. He's still awake, even at this hour, and you get the impression vaguely irritated about something. {Master Karim, would you be able to put me through to my father? It's a matter of significant importance.}

His response is swift, and tinged with the stain of anger despite his best attempts to suppress his emotions. {Of course, Mikhael. I'll need a moment to conclude my business here and climb that cursed hill.}

(2/3)
>>
With that the connection goes dead, and you're left staring off blankly into space. You wonder if you always zone out like that when you use the brooch? Regardless, it seems like Karim might be a while.

"So, just so you're aware, there's some variety of ancient superweapon under the palace, in addition to a teleportation portal and a maximum-security enchanted prison filled with drug-mad abominations which wield godly power. Scattered about between them are various golems, spirits, corpse-beasts, and sundry other monsters from beyond the ages of man, from which my party barely escaped with our lives. Strictly speaking, we took about a half-dozen fatal wounds between us. I thought it were all terribly interesting, so I dug a tunnel straight through most of it leading here.

Just trying to keep you informed. Oh, do you want to see the spirit I enslaved?"
