You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and this isn't how you intended for things to turn out when you agreed to take Masaki to the hospital to see her son.

“You can't just go barging in on Captains, Masaki!” you insist, trailing along behind your sister-in-law as she stomps down the hallway. “There are some things I can't cover for, you know!”

“Mhm,” she replies, not really paying attention to you. “I'll come along quietly when I've said my piece.”

That's what you were afraid of. Kurosaki Masaki asked a simple question to a passing attendant, asking about the Captain recovering in a room upstairs. The well-meaning Fourth Division nurse, whose training clearly never covered such situations, immediately told Masaki that it was Captain Kuchiki. Unsurprisingly she also revealed that Byakuya had been “wounded in a fight with a human”, and that the human in question was about to be discharged from the recovery ward.

That got Masaki's curiosity. Hearing the nurse compare her hair to the injured human got her full attention.

“This is the place, right?” Masaki asks you, not even slowing down to hear your response before kicking the door in.

Inside, Byakuya is sitting upright in bed with a copy of the Ninth's magazine in his hands. He looks up to find a strange woman with bright blonde hair in a sweater glaring at him from the doorway.

“Can I help you, Captain Kusajishi?” he asks after spotting you behind Masaki.

“She's not the one you should be talking to right now,” Masaki replies sternly.

Byakuya, still looking at you over Masaki's shoulder, frowns at the assertion that Masaki is somehow more important than another Captain. “Who is this person?”

“My name is Masaki,” your sister-in-law replies coolly. “Kurosaki Masaki.”

“Masaki,” you observe with all the calm you can muster, “this is a hospital. And it happens to be run by one of the few people who even scares ME.”

The young quincy looks down at Byakuya. “Do you have children, Captain?”

“I do not,” he replies, watching Masaki cautiously. “Why do you ask?”

In response Masaki produces a small reishi bow and puts a single arrow into Byakuya's bed, right between his legs. The bow then disappears.

“You threatened my child's life,” Masaki tells the Captain in a dangerously calm voice. “Two can play that game, Captain. Do you understand?”

Instead of looking as fearful as you'd expect of most men, Byakuya actually seems a little impressed at Masaki's brazen declaration.

“I can respect that sort of dedication to one's family,” he admits, setting the magazine aside. “Please give Kurosaki Ichigo my regards when next you see him.”

Masaki responds with a curt nod. “Glad we could settle things.”

“Did you have any issues to bring to my attention, Captain Kusajishi?”

You shake your head. “Just making sure Yoruichi's favorite scratching post is still here for her when she gets back.”

“What did she leave for, precisely?” Byakuya wonders half to himself.

In truth you know precisely where Yoruichi is and what she's doing: she's left for the Royal Palace with Shutara, to produce a second zanpakuto.

“Asking a woman to reveal another woman's secrets?” you asks cannily. “Shame on you, little Byakuya!”

“It's an idle concern,” Byakuya dismisses your taunt.

“She's left to train on her own,” you tell your fellow Captain, giving him something resembling a detail without mentioning anything about the Royal Palace or Resurrección. “You can ask her about it when she gets back.”

“Then you can give her my regards as well,” Byakuya adds. “It seems like all of our Captains were humbled by the events of Aizen's defection.”

“Possibly,” you acknowledge. “I'll tell her you said hello.”

With that you and Masaki excuse yourselves, heading for Ichigo's room. Your in-law seems to be less satisfied with Yoruichi's absence, and asks you about it along the way.

“So what kind of training are we talking about here?”

You shrug. “It's complicated.”

“How complicated?” she persists.

“Soul King complicated.” Your response causes her to fall immediately silent: clearly she knows something about the order of the afterlife, at least well enough to realize what you're saying.

When you finally reach Ichigo's room, Masaki stops you outside the door. She has a concerned expression on her face that you didn't quite expect.

“How bad was it?” she asks. “I mean usually our family deals with these things in a kind of peculiar way, but even if he came here on his own against my wishes, it can't have been easy.”

“If you need to ask you probably know already,” you observe quietly. “He did something mind-bogglingly stupid, but he did it to save someone he cares about. Just give him a whack he'll never forget and then try your damnedest to love the stupid out of him.”

“Now that's a tall order,” Masaki grins. “But you've got a point. You really have been at this for a long time, haven't you?”

“Longer than I care to admit,” you reply with a grim chuckle.

Masaki slaps gently at her cheeks to psyche herself up, then pushes through the doorway.

“I see you got cut up pretty badly, Ichigo,” she greets her astonished son. “Explain.”

“Mom? Why're you even...”

Masaki cracks Ichigo across the head once before resting her hands on her hips. “Nevermind that. You've got a lot of explaining to do.”

“Rukia put her life on the line for me,” Ichigo explains, looking away from his mother. “So when her life was put in danger because of it I had to help her.”

“I see,” Masaki nods, “so it really was the girl. You're more like your father than you seem to realize, Ichigo.”

Your sister-in-law sits at the side of the bed, and puts an arm around your nephew's shoulders.

“I'm not happy that you ignored me, but I'm definitely happy you're okay, Ichigo.”

The softer side of his mother seems to put Ichigo at ease, in turn bringing out a side you definitely haven't seen in the boy. When he's with his mother he loses that hard edge he tries so hard to maintain around everyone else. It seems she just has that effect on people. Isshin was the same way.

You decide to remain silent... in his own way, Ichigo reminds you a little of Gin when he was young and irresponsible. Sure he's rougher around the edges than your own adopted son ever was, but it's clear that despite any bluster that may arise mother and son love each other dearly.

Perhaps it's because of your silence that you're the first to hear it.

“... does anyone else hear that?” you ask, turning your head and looking for the source of a gradually building noise.

“What noise?” Ichigo asks, staring at you as if noticing your presence for the first time. “I don't hear any...”

With a massive crash, Yoruichi comes falling through the ceiling and lands next to you, cracking the vinyl tiles in a massive cloud of dust and debris. She's not wearing her white Captain's haori, probably because she didn't anticipate a need for it, and when she rises to her feet you can see her hakama are in tatters from the midthigh down. She coughs a few times as you help her brush the dist and bits of ceiling off herself.

Before you can say anything she pulls you into a tender embrace, which you find yourself reluctant to eventually break. Ichigo turns his head and coughs.

“You look terrible,” you observe, feeling no need for any further greetings between you.

Yoruichi nods, but there's a confident smirk on her face. “My new Resurrección did a number on my uniform... I need to get cleaned up a bit.”

“Why did you just crash through my ceiling?” Ichigo asks, taken aback at your wife's abrupt appearance.

“I just finished training in the Royal Realm,” Yoruichi explains with a dismissive wave, “and instead of being a decent guy about it the monk just passed me some tights, called them a “modified Keisen uniform”, and booted me out of the Palace.”

“And now I'm here.”

Ichigo shakes his head. “Yeah, I don't care about that. What I wanna know is why does it have to be my room?”

“I was aiming for Riku,” Yoruichi replies, already taking off her eviscerated hakama.

“Hey!” Ichigo shouts, covering his eyes. “You can't just start stripping in here!”

“Get out, Ichigo,” you demand.

“But it's my room!”

Yoruichi pauses with tights in hand, turning towards your nephew with an impish grin and a sway of her hips. “What, it's not like we're covering new territory here. We've already bathed together, remember? It's fine.”

“You did what now?” Masaki glowers down at Ichigo. “Not only did you disobey your parents' wishes in coming here unsupervised but you've been bathing with two older women? Naked!?”

“Who are you calling old, Ichigo?” you growl, thumb flicking Tenkotsuki free from her sheath. “That's not very nice. I'll have you know two hundred and fifty isn't even “old” for a shinigami!”

“I didn't call you anything!” Ichigo insists, balling up his fists in frustration before realizing that Yoruichi still isn't wearing any pants and immediately covering his eyes again.

“I didn't raise my only son to be a punk and a pervert, Ichigo!” Masaki continues loudly.

“Fine! I'll step out, jeez!” Ichogo shouts, throwing his hands in the air in frustration. “I'll go talk to Tatsuki, she's nextdoor.”

After she watches her son stomp out of the room, Masaki flashes you a thumbs-up.

“He really is too easy,” Rosa sighs.

“Totally predictable,” Tenkotsuki agrees.

Masaki takes a seat while Yoruichi finishes dressing with a smile on her face. “Teenagers... if I couldn't tease them so easily I'd never be able to tolerate them.”

A few moments later Yoruichi stands in a new outfit, with dark skintight pants replacing her normal hakama and her sleeveless Ōken haori tucked under an orange sash. She also wears something entirely new that you didn't get a good look at when she fell through the ceiling: a pair of short blades, in opposite ends of a single sheath that's positioned behind her back at the same level as her sash. These are baat jaam do, or “butterfly knives”, the one on her right having been designed to be spun and the one on the left appearing to have an extended quillon for blade trapping.

“You reforged Shōsōtō while you were at it?” you ask, guessing at the second blade's identity.

Yoruichi nods thoughtfully. “I figured why not take the time to rework their sealed forms?”

“And you went full Chinese. Yamamoto's gonna throw a fit.”

“But you clearly approve,” Yoruichi smiles. “Of all people, I'd expect you and Suì Fēng to get it.”

“In shaolin they're considered an extension of the empty hand,” you nod, “so using these blades suits your favored style.”

Masaki seems completely lost at all the martial-arts talk, but listens politely nonetheless.

“Let's go find Ichigo,” you suggest. “I can ask about your new partner, and that'll lead us into... well, that other thing.”

Yoruichi gives you a knowing glance, waving to the door. Masaki takes the lead, and you follow. A Fourth Division male nurse stares at you and the devastation behind you, struggling to figure out what he should do. The presence of two Captains leaves him at a total loss.

“I... ma'am,” he offers lamely.

“Sorry about that,” Yoruichi waves as she passes. “Couldn't be helped. You can bill First Division for the damages.”

“First Division?” you ask, surprised to hear Yoruichi pawning off responsibility.

She nods. “That sort of thing falls under their jurisdiction, it's fine!”

Next door you find Ichigo sitting on the side of Tatsuki's bed, the latter seemingly alarmed at the commotion. She seems relieved somewhat to see what caused it.

"So, you asked about my Resurrección," she begins. "Well, it's the reason my clothes were in such a sad state."

"So it's a little like shunkō?" you ask curiously.

"You could say that," she nods thoughtfully. "It's called Raijūsenkō, and it amplifies and solidifies the electricity produced by my body's nervous system."

"It solidifies it?" Tatsuki asks, confused at how such a thing could be possible. Yoruichi shrugs.

"Solid as any other part of my body," she explains. "Almost like armor or boxing equipment. The amplified electric signals mean an increase in speed and a decrease in response times too, and of course my reiatsu goes through the roof too."

Ichigo, however, is the first to ask the important question: "Wait, what's a Resurrección?"

“You asked me once why I had two swords,” you muse quietly, taking a seat yourself. “First, I have to answer that question. And to do that, I have to go back two hundred years.”

“So settle in.”

You begin with your past life as a Sternritter, through which Masaki sits in rapt attention. This arc of your tale ends in Rosa's death at Yoruichi's hands but begins a new arc, which sees you rise to the rank of Lieutenant in the Onmitsukidō under your former killer and the adoption of Gin and Rangiku.

“You mean you married the woman who killed you?” Ichigo asks, brow furrowed. “What the hell's that all about? I don't understand it at all!”

“I married the person with whom I shared the strongest mutual bonds,” you explain carefully. “Those bonds we created transcended any other concerns we may have had.”

“Now would you shut up please?” Yoruichi asks hotly, though she seems to blush ever so slightly at your frank explanation.

The story continues with Aizen's experiments in the Rukongai, and covers his attack on the Captains and Lieutenants that would become Vizards. You describe how you became involved, and briefly explain the hundred years of shadow war up until Aizen's eventual defection.

“So that's what brings us to the Resurrección,” you explain carefully. “Arrancar use them as a rule. When released they return an arrancar to what they were like as hollows, enhancing their strength and abilities.”

“Wait, so you modified your own hollow abilities?” Tatsuki concludes. “The ones Aizen stuck you with?”

“That's right.”

“But then what happens when you release that zanpakuto?” Tatsuki asks, confused. “You're not hollows, and never were.”

“I regain some abilities from when I was a Sternritter,” you explain calmly.

Yoruichi nods in agreement. “My Raijūsenkō is a better reflection of that part of my soul. It's complicated, but trust me. It makes sense.”

“Masaki, the next part of what I say concerns you and your son.”

You can see the moment when Masaki first realizes what you're talking about. She remembers the part of the story you haven't told Ichigo, the night his parents first met. Everything he is revolves around those events, and you never felt that it was your place to describe them.

“I know you have one of those 'inner hollows' too, Ichigo,” Masaki explains quietly. “I know because for several years I had it myself, and it ended up passed to you.”

“Wait, how?” Ichigo demands. “That makes no sense!”

“One of Aizen's experiments,” you explain. “The hollowfied soul of a shinigami that Isshin and I believe was the former head of the Shiba clan. It infected your mother.”

“Hollow and quincy can't coexist,” Masaki continues. “Urahara Kisuke offered to help save my life at teh expense of your father's shinigami abilities, using his reiryoku to counterbalance the hollow's. When you were born you inherited my potential and Isshins, along with the hollow that infected me.”

“That's why you tried so hard to keep me from coming here,” Ichigo reasons. “You suspected this would happen?”

“I'm still trying to figure out why Urahara took the risk,” Masaki sighs, clearly frustrated with the former Captain.

You shake your head. “It's not strictly speaking his fault, as much as I hate to admit it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ichigo was sent back in time by mistake, remember?” you explain. “Yoruichi and I went into the human world to try and work an explanation out of Kisuke, but we realized what had happened. Kisuke figured out at the same time... once we all knew what had happened, we were basically committed to that action.”

“Less of a causal loop,” Yoruichi mutters to herself, “more like a trap.”

“So,” Ichigo sighs, rising to his feet and scratching at his hair. “What you're saying is that you've recruited a bunch of hollows that turned into shinigami to fight Aizen's hollows that turned into shinigami, and you yourselves turned into hollows but not really, and if you can't figure out a way to stop it a hollow that was inside my mom for years is going to eat me.”

“That sound about right?”

“Sort of,” you shrug. “Really it's worse than eating you, it would take over your mind and use your body to brutally kill everyone you know and love. Learning to control that force will be like Bankai training, but with generally more violence and screaming involved.”

“So you can help me?” he asks hopefully.

Yoruichi shakes her head. “Not this time, Ichigo. Riku and I are unusual cases, so any advice we could give you wouldn't be very useful.”

“I'll browbeat Urahara into solving the problem,” you reassure your nephew. “But Isshin's powers should be returning soon, and between your parents things should be okay in the short term.”

“He probably shouldn't be fighting,” Rosa tells you. “That'll help his hollow take over faster”

“And you should avoid fighting,” you repeat what your own inner hollow has told you, “the physical strain and emotional stress will only make things worse.”

“I JUST learned Bankai,” Ichigo complains loudly. “Jeez, what a friggin' pain.”

“Beats the alternative,” you point out. “Now let's get you a new room for the night. You should be free to leave tomorrow, so it'd pay to rest up.”

“Speaking of hollows,” you continue, your chipper tone signalling a massive departure from the topic of Ichigo dismembering his entire family, “I have some friends for you all to meet tomorrow, if you're up to it. I get the feeling you'll be seeing a lot of each other in the near future.”

With that, you excuse yourself.

It takes only a few minutes to set Ichigo and Masaki up with a place to sleep the night, and you manage to evade any lecturing from Unohana over the damage to her Division's grounds, so you'd consider the evening rather successful. By the time you and Yoruichi return to the Ninth Division barracks it's already dark, and you sit up for a while discussing recent concerns.

From a pouch tucked into her sash, Yoruichi presents you with something unusual.

“They're contact lenses,” she explains as you roll the little discs between your fingers, “found in a locker in the Research Division labs. The locker had your name on it.”

“My name?” you ask, completely confused at why there would be a storage space there for you.

Yoruichi shrugs. “Nemu told our investigators they were meant for you. No idea what they are or why they were made.”

“They spark when you run rieatsu into them,” you observe playfully as the lenses take on an unusually flashy appearance. “They're useless aside from that.”

“Well, apparently someone thought they were important,” Yoruichi sighs, rising to get ready to sleep. “Hell if I know why. Maybe he knew something we don't.”

Your sleep that night is troubled, despite the comfort of your own bed and the presence of your loved ones nearby.

In your mind all is not well. High upon a sea cliff, where there should only be you and your closest partners, Tenkotsuki has walled herself off. The cherry tree she usually sits nearby is at the center of a shining green cube, with her sitting as if focusing solely on its maintenence.

Rosa is nowhere to be found, and no matter how hard you try Tenkotsuki won't answer you. It's such a jarring experience you can't be sure whether this is really your inner world, or some bizarre nightmare where a lucidly-imagined scene has tricked you into thinking this is familiar territory. Ultimately, you end up waking with a lingering unease, a doubt that all is well, and a feeling of odd loneliness.

And worst, it seems you're not the only one who feels it.

Fuck.
>>
>>45415246
She is now fool.
>>
>>45415246
She is though. Riku's made that very clear to anyone who's asked.

Don't assume you know anything about how Rosa and Tenkotsuki will respond to the coming situation (since it's fairly clear it's Muramasa). They may both be zanpakuto, but they're very unusual zanpakuto. There's absolutely no way to reasonably predict what they're going to do.

>>

Like I said, I didn't intend to use the arc, but could only remember Facebook as being a hard "nope". And without him, the entire psychological horror aspect disappears, so there really would be no "Fullbring arc" anyway.

Unagiya is there though.
>>
>>45415335
>whether or not we notice Muramasa dicking about with our other soul swords
Precisely. Unlike the canon Captains, the most perceptive of whom only had a vague sense that something might be off, Riku's experience has put her on full alert. She knows that something is seriously wrong with her swords, and that others are suffering from similar issues even if they don't realize it.
>>
Unless anyone has immediate questions, I'll be checking out. ask.fm is always open.
>>
But man, the Muramasa arc was such a drag. How are you supposed to be able to control something that is literally a part of someone else?

It's not even brute forcing it, it's just "Well your zanpakto is going to kill you now, kthnx". Come on.

And then the whole convincing zanpakto spirits their wielders were bad thing, the fuck is that shit? How the fuck does that work on anyone who can actually communicate with their zanpakto?

Aizen's zanpakto was really pushing the boundaries of asshole shit, but Muramasa is the pinnacle of being a dick.

And why doesn't Oetsu deal with it? That seems like the sort of thing he would actually care about.
>>
>>45415462
It's fine anon, Kubo may be shit at real plotlines, but I expect King to do it well
>>
>>45415492
That's not the issue, really, it compounds it, but a zanpakto that controls other zanpakto?

Why would Oetsu let that shit exist? I could buy him having it as it easily fits his theme but instead some fuccboi gets it?

Naw.
>>
>>45415535
I think the idea is muramasa was mutated somehow and his ability changed because of it. Also it's been firmly established that unless some TRULY MAJOR shit is going down, zero squad is staying right the fuck where they are. Muramasa just wasn't important enough. He probably WOULD have if he got far enough, but he got shot down before he became high enough priority for the zeroes. I mean they didnt interfere when eldritch butterflaizen was dicking around, muramasa wasn't that big.
>>
>>45415615
>eldritch butterflaizen was dicking around

But he was in the world of the living when that happened, I don't think they know what happens there from that shitty palace.

But Muramasa is a massive threat, say he gets his grubby bullshit on one of the squad zero zanpakto, right?

I dunno, mang, unspecified bullshit irks me.
>>
>>45415670
Wouldn't that be a HUGE reason for zero squad to not get involved at all costs then?
>>
>>45415686
But you can brute force your way into the palace, and someone like Yamamoto would know that, so his zanpakto would know it, so if he got Ryujin Jakka he would know "hey, let's go fuck up those REALLY swole niggas".

All Oetsu would need to do is pop out without his zanpakto and punch Muramasa to death. Or Koga. Or both. Both is best.
>>
>>45415732
He would fucking eviscerate Koga.
>>
>>45415959
>tfw Koga being a petty faggot is what caused him to not reach his potential of "bretty gud"

Hey, he might have been the one to replace Yamamoto instead of Shunsui apparently.

Not really, Koga's a bitch.
