After a few days of fuming, you return to your old self, and continue your campaign of evil. You continue to press the local farms and ranches for tax, which they offer without resistance now, but the time has come to take the next big step in domination. Namely, the nearest city. It is a large and bloated beast, home to paupers as well as rich landowners. The only thing holding you back is the size of it's guard, and the magic warding off invaders.

It is not at all uncommon for cities to pay powerful mage circles or even churches to cast powerful defensive magic. They do not provide absolute defense, but you and Vanessa would find it terribly difficult to enter the city without employing bombastic means. As such, you must decide how to approach this new problem.

Vanessa, in all her naivete, reccommends simply demolishing the ward with your most powerful abilities. This would no doubt damage the city, but would allow you yourself to join in the melee. Duncan, true to his nature, advises subterfuge and sabotage. This will take quite some time, and if Duncan is caught he will likely be killed or captured. Marigold, perhaps out of turn, recommends sending the minions in, but does also advise gaining more minions. This too, would take time.

>Recruit more minions

We need more, better capable minions if we want to take this city.
Farmers and traders with a guard or two is one thing, an entire city full of well trained guards and mages is another. Our minions will get slaughtered, and although we could probably take them, it probably would be more trouble than we'd want.

We need to build up a more capable force.
>>
Also, big cities are bound to have a lot of poor people sick of the way things are. Once we roll in, we can rule up the lower class to revolt and possibly join our cause, promising a change in the system, and offering power, food, shelter, etc.
Just a thought, well need more foot soldiers if we really want to go big.

You decide that, rather than traditional violence, you will employ a tactic as old as time. You send a message to all local growers and suppliers, informing them to refuse shipping their goods out for the time being. They agree, though it will be a hard time to be sure they follow your word, even under threat of violence. You'll have to have Duncan rotating surveillance around the clock.

You also have Vanessa keep an eye on the main roads into the city, just to keep you informed of anyone trying to smuggle food in. In the meantime, you decide to build up your troops a bit more.

Announce that those who don't wish to die from starvation or by the tip of your blades, are free to join your ranks.
The condition is they have to offer us a head of a family member or someone close to them, to prove that their loyalty now lies with us and not their city or family.

Soon, you have it.

"Good evening sir, madam, or ethereal entity, my name is Chris and I'll be your medium to the nine hells tonight. I understand you're interested in one of our service packages." You agree, and tell him you'll only need them for about a week. "I see, and you'll be using them for what exactly?" Evil invasion of course. "Perrrfect, just need to fill in the paperwork here. Can I interest you in our platinum program this evening? For just a few souls more we'll include Sh'krz'nah the Demonic Empress of avarice." You don't need anything that fancy. You ask for the Incubus package. Chris finishes up filling out the paperwork, and tells you your temp will arrive first thing in the morning. You thank him, and cut the connection. That done, you decide to turn in and catch up on sleep before beginning the next phase of your campaign.

True to Chris' word, a trio of tall, muscular, nearly hearless from the neck down men are standing idly in your breakfast nook when you come down for a bagel and coffee the next morning. As you enter, the three of them turn, and smile with teeth so perfect you'd think they were carved by jewelers. They each extend a hand in greeting, and you shake them in sequence.

"Thank you for the opportunity, sir. Should we get started right away, or would you like us to wait for now?"

The three demons give you a sexy thumbs up, and make their way out of the kitchen. As they walk, their nude bodies warp and become clothed in expensive silk and satin, until they resemble minstrels and merchants. You suspect they must be old hands at this game.

When they round the corner, you see one of the minions peeking through the door frame. You ask him what the matter is, and he enters awkwardly.

"Er, well you see, my dark lord, there's a bit of trouble in the training hall. Without Vanessa to keep an eye on her, and without Duncan to coach, Marigold has gotten a bit... carried away with training."

The minions should learn to toughen up and take a beating, but we can't let Marigold get TOO carried away, it'll be hard to take over a city if our minions are already too beat up to fight before the fight even begins
>>
>>45421976
>Go to the training hall
>>
>>45422009
You follow the minion down to the training hall and enter with all the nobility you can. You spot Marigold on the ground, being held by two of the other minions. She doesn't seem to be resisting, only staring at the stone floor depressingly. You ask what happened, and one of the minions still standing answers.

"Well, we were just doing some sword drills, and Greg nicked her cheek on accident. All of a sudden she went nuts and attacked him full force." You ask which one of them is Greg. "Well that's the thing. None of us are Greg anymore." You rub your temple and tell them to just tell you where Greg is. The minion points in five different directions. "There, there, over there, up there, and I think that's his genitals by your foot there." You step to the side.

Marigold seems genuinely guilty about what she's done, but this isn't something you can allow to happen every week.

You tell the others to leave the room, and they do so gladly. You hear one or two whispers as they go, but ignore it for now, and approach Marigold on the ground. She doesn't stand, so you decide to sit beside her. You reach out and pat her on the back, asking what went wrong.

"I'm sorry, boss. I just lost my temper." Losing your temper is one thing, it's another thing entirely to rip a man into chunks. "You don't understand! You don't know what it's like to live your whole life expected to be a demure little girl, and get married to some rancher's son because there's no other choice. It's only since I've been working for you that I can be myself. The truth is..." Marigold turns her tearful eyes up to you. "I just love killing! I love it so much sir! Is that so wrong!?" She rests her head on your arm and begins weeping softly. "I can't change who I am! I just want to murder things! Don't you understand!?"

Part of you does. The evil part, which is most of the parts. You awkward rub her bicep to try and comfort her, before realizing what you're doing and standing back up. Marigold falls over a bit, but catches herself before sitting up and wiping her nose.

"Are you gonna fire me, boss?"

You are straight with Marigold, and she seems to understand. You summon the others back in, and have them prepare the whipping post. It's not a fancy whipping post, what with gold trim and jewels encrusted into the base, but it's been with you for many years and you can't part with it.

You choose a piece that will leave light marks, but get the point across, and have the minions tie Marigold topless to the post. No sense ruining a shirt over a little killing.

You bring back the leather length of the whip and let Marigold know that this will be a lesson to not just her, but to the others as well. The other minions seem nervous about that. You bring your arm forth, then flick your wrist as the perfect moment to leave a mean scratch across Marigold's back, as well as produce a satisfying crack that echoes through the hall. Marigold shrieks, and the minions flinch. You repeat this five more times, until she is heaving and groaning. The marks are very well placed, if you do say so yourself. Seems you've still got that artistic flare from your youth. You wait for Marigold to recover a little, and suddenly she seems to speak, though her voice it ragged.

You decide to let her enjoy the reminder of her mistakes for one day, and administer something to ease the pain tomorrow, to help her recover in time.

Until then, you decide to send a minion incognito to the city you'll be attacking, to deliver a message of hope to the masses. Any who side with you during the attack will be given preferential treatment. Those who do not resist will not be killed. Any who join you willingly now may spare their families as well. It won't work quickly, but it will work.

A few more days come and go. The incubi report that things are going well. They have wormed their way into the hearts of the local women by posing as performers and rich aristocrats. One of them is even sticking it to the mayor's wife and daughter at the same time, though neither of them are aware of it. Things are looking quite good on the roads as well. Vanessa has burned every trader and smuggler she's been able to encounter, and though some goods are still making it into town, the people are clamoring for something to be done. Unfortunately, the emergency storage in the city is holding quite strong, so starvation doesn't seem to be any sort of immediate threat.

You give word to Duncan. Within a few hours of sending the message, you hear from Vanessa that there is a plume of smoke rising from the city. It seems the boy is useful after all. That is, until you realize he himself did not give the report. In fact, after a day, you still hear nothing back. He is dead, or worse, captured. In any case, the day of the attack draws close. You'll find him one way or the other, so it's more prudent to prepare for now.

Marigold heals well, and apologizes again for her misconduct before returning to normal training. Just as you suspected, she and the other minions have a stronger bond now than ever. It warms your black heart to see.

The day of the attack finally rolls around, and you and yours, joined by Vanessa after her return, make your way to the city. You crest a hill high enough to avoid arrow fire, and inspect your target. Things seem calm now, but you sense something in the air. They will fight back.

You send a message to the Incubi. They get to work sewing a few last minute seeds of discord. They also inform you of something you should be aware of outside the city gate. You procure a spyglass from one of the minions, and take a peek. Hanging above the gates, lashed to the woodwork by his arms and legs, is Duncan. He is battered, but doesn't seem to be dead, else carrion crows would already have set upon him in this weather.

You toss the spyglass aside and take a deep breath. Whoever managed this is no joke, and they meant it as a taunt directly to you. You feel it may be a trap, but leaving Duncan there broadcasts to the people in the city that you were outdone once, even if indirectly.

You lead the minions forward, marching together as they were taught. At a healthy pace, it takes you a half hour to arrive at the gates, and much to your surprise there is no immediate resistance. No hot oil, no archers, not even a slingstone. Curious.

What is present is a very powerful barrier preventing you and Vanessa from entering. Destroying it will drain Vanessa terribly, and will weaken you considerably, but you must do so so assist in the attack. As you consider the options, the minions free Duncan and set him aside.

You tell Vanessa to destroy the barrier keeping you out of the city. She does so loyally, summoning all her power to focus it on one point, cracking the invisible wall around the gate, and allowing you to pass through. To test it, you reach out and place a hand on the wooden gate, satisfied when it does not repel you. Vanessa collapses, completely drained, onto the ground. She breathes heavily and seems unable to do much more than shuffle when she manages to return to her feet, and you order her to return home until things are sorted out. She nods, and begins retreating as you turn to break down the gate.

With one powerful kick, the wooden beam holding it shut cracks, and another snap it in half, allowing the gate itself to swing ajar. You push it open, and allow the minions to head in first.

Before you are a few dozen citizens, all with their homes on their backs it seems. Among them are women, children, and a few men who seem utterly ashamed of themselves. You'd guess they are here to beg for mercy.

You command all to kneel before you. Nearly all do without hesitation, but the beautiful thing about fear is it makes even the brave susceptible to peer pressure, and soon all present are bowing. You have your minions pass out business cards as you look over your new subjects. They all seem to be in good health, save for a few, but only a handful look any better than the minions you currently possess. Still, you offer any who wish it a chance to make their way to your side. Those who do are given a weapon, but no armor, lest they grow overconfident.

You ask about Duncan and the barrier, and learn that a wanderer from the east is the one responsible for Duncan's condition, and that the barrier is nearly a century old now, placed by a cleric long dead. It's of no consequence now that you're inside, but it's still handy to know it's origin.

You and the minions, including the new hires, march together toward the center of town. As you go, you sense eyes on you. some folks are still in their homes and businesses, hiding and waiting to see who comes out on top. When you reach the market, it becomes clear why they'd bet against you at all.

One hundred men, armed and armored, stand with bucklers raised and spears poised to charge, spread out along the empty street. You look around and see at least twenty more on the rooftops, aiming crossbows down toward you. You doubt your forces can handle this much, even if you'd survive. One of the enemy steps forward, wearing a helmet decorated with peacock feathers.

"Lay down your weapons! This city is ours, and we'll die to defend it!"

Big talk for a man who didn't even have enough men to hold the wall.

You promise the resisting forces that they need only leave in peace, and peace will remain with them. You see some of them break then and there, but they are also afraid of betraying their comrades. If you're careful, the cowards will route as soon as battle commences.

"Begone demon! We have ways of expelling you!" cries the leader. He produces from his belt a paper talisman, meant to ward off evil. It is quite potent, but nowhere near enough to seal your strength. It would take a hundred of them at once to bring you down to the level of a common mortal, and something of this rarity would take a powerful sage a great deal of effort to create.

You spread your arms and await his attack. He seems disturbed, but doesn't waver.

"By the power of Thal, and the Holy Circle! By the Twelve Peers and the Maiden of the Sea!" He cries some incessant chant before hurling the talisman at you, it flies true, and sticks fast to your body, emitting a surge of power. It stings like the dickens, and you have to stifle a groan, but soon the talisman's power is spent, and it merely falls off, burning to ashes before it meets the ground. This time, the leader of the enemy guardsmen shudders. It's clear he expected this to work with such fervor, to see it crumble away has shattered his resolve.

You wipe away the few remaining cinders on your chest, and approach him slowly. He steps back, a few inches at a time, and finally falls onto his hind end when you come within arm's reach.

You hear a twang, and a bolt flies, plinking off of your armguard before clattering uselessly to the floor. You turn to see the shooter shaking, crying, and dropping his weapon as he faints, hitting the roof of the building he is positioned on with a thud.

The rest of the guards drop their weapons, and back away from you in a herd. The only one still in place is the cowering leader of their band, who merely gawks at you from the ground.

You step over him like so much rubbish, and continue your march to the heart of town, namely a small tower located at the center. As you walk, you hear the once bold troops behind you scatter and shuffle away to hide and wallow in their own cowardice. It's a good sound.

You round a corner together with the minions and spot the final defense of this troublesome city. A man with a clean shaven head, tattooed as a pirate and dressed in strange clothes stands on the steps of the tower. His presence is loud, and you can feel ethereal energies playing around him. He is utterly silent and stoic, leaving you with the impression he won't succumb to the usual intimidation tactics.

He accepts. You have your minions remove your cape, so as not to have it limit your range of motion. When you are ready, the stranger crouches and smiles.

"I will display for you the third most powerful of all the Zodiac Fist techniques! The Fist of the Ram!" He steps forward, and then is gone. Your eyes are completely able to follow him, and by the time he is upon you it is too late. With a mighty crash, he puts his shoulder into your stomach. It sends you sliding back a good six feet before you are able to stop yourself, but you nearly knock over a few minions in the process. Fortunately, though physics was not on your side, magic was, and your armor did not allow any damage to befall you. When you look back down at the man, he is quite perplexed.

"Very well, I see my bluff was of no use. Then I shall reveal the true third strongest technique! Behold the Fist of the Hare!" He dashes again, and though you are barely able to track him now, it's still not enough to catch him as he pummels you with kicks and punches from all angles. Each blow aims for a vital joint, but not a single one lands correctly. At last he tires out, and does a few fancy backflips to regain distance before wiping his brow and panting for air.

As you move around him, you hear a tearing noise. This angers you. you spin around to see the card fluttering away in the breeze, and his face deathly serious.

"You insult the teachings of my masters. For that, you will pay." He returns to his strange stance. "Behold now, the strongest technique of the Zodiac Fist. The Fist of the White Tiger!"

You stay rooted to the ground, and watch as he does some exotic dance. You can sense the energies around him gathering into his belly, then bubble and churn. When he is done, he comes at you full speed. The energy within him flows into his hand, and explodes as his palm impacts with your body. His skin clangs against your armor, but otherwise nothing seems to happen. That is, until you feel a shocking pain run throughout your body. You flinch, and cough up a bit of bile. The man steps back, and grins.

"How does it feel? The Tiger Fist is the final technique passed down in my school. To be hit by it is to feel death a thousand times over."

It does hurt, and impressively so. It's as though you were being seared by the flames of hell. Of course, you did that every weekend when you had bootycalls to Vanessa's mother. You compose yourself, and through the pain you find yourself able to form completely articulate words.

>"You are strong. But I am a century your elder, and a millennium your better."
>"It does hurt, wanderer. As will my retort."
>"Die for your insolence!"

Do we? If we keep at it, opportunists will just fight us and think we'll recruit them anyway after we're done. Our name needs to be feared, and all resistance crushed. Mercy should be reserved only for those who grovel at the mere mention of our name.

He is stunned by your ability to stand, let alone continue fighting. He doesn't even attempt to escape when you lash out and grab hold of him, pulling him into a powerful death hug. He can only struggle as you increase the force with which you squeeze his body, and finally you hear the sweet sound of cracking bone. You drop him there, leaving him a coughing heap of regret, and toss another card on top of him. This time he takes it in hand, reads it, and falls over exhausted. You smile and turn back toward the tower.

At the very top sit a group of old, dusty bureaucrats. They surrender immediately, and hand over control of the town to you.

You announce to the minions your victory, and they throw their bucklers high into the air, then duck and whimper when they come falling back down spikes first. They cheer you on uproariously, even the ones who only joined this afternoon.

You tell the men to meet you at the nearest pub for the afterparty, and watch them scurry away before sending a message to Vanessa. She responds promptly, letting you know she is hold up in bed with a bowl of soup and some soothing candles, but she could really go for a nice juicy mortal soul to pep her up. You tell her to get plenty of rest and that you'll be home after the minions tire out. She wishes you goodnight, and blows you a kiss before you end the connection.

You follow the minions trail of debauchery to the nearest social club, and enter to find them helping themselves to booze and snacks. The wanderer is not among them, but he wasn't at the base of the tower either. You don't think you've seen the last of him yet.

You give the minions a pep talk to raise their spirits even higher, and enjoy a tall mug of whatever these city dwellers dare call beer before leaving Marigold in charge of the others, and heading home.

On the way out, you pass by many houses, murmuring with news about the day. You expect to have to return often to keep things in order for a while.

As you pass by a house, you see a small boy standing alone beside a tall pot. He holds in his hand an old fruit peel, and you surmise that he is eating garbage. He looks at you innocently, somehow uncertain of the gravity of your presence. The child is half starved, and jaded to the cold and dark of encroaching night. And Vanessa did say she was hungry.

You arrive and find Duncan on the mend, leaning on a crutch as he roams the empty halls of the fortress. He spies the small boy, but does not question your intent. He decides instead to grovel on his knees.

"My dark lord, I failed you. I allowed myself to be defeated by a wandering thug, and caused you great dishonor. Please, deliver unto me my just punishment."

You order Duncan to feed and clothe the boy, then report to the training room and wait for your arrival. He complies quickly, and you go to see your daughter.

Vanessa is still up, reading a light novel as she sips tea in her large bed. Her room is rather bare, but she has her clothes and makeup put away neatly. You don't much care for the shorter outfits. When she sees you, you observe a cheerful smile cut across her face.

"Hey daddy. How did the attack go?" You let her know things went well, and not a minion was lost. "I knew you'd do it no problem." She laughs, and you take a seat beside her. The two of you chat for a long while before she grows sleepy, and you hug her goodnight. She sneaks a kiss on your cheek before you part, and let her rest.

By the time you find Duncan, the other minions have returned as well. They are piss drunk and smell of beer and cheese, but they are doing their best to stand at attention as Duncan leans on the whipping post. Wise to know his fate.

One of the minions brings you the same whip you used to punish Marigold, which you unfurl with a flick of the wrist. Duncan hugs the pole, and bids you do what must be done.

You bring the whip back, and snap it forward. The lash it makes is perfect, and the sound resonates through the silent training hall. You can sense the minions disgust and anguish again, especially at seeing their superior whipped this time, instead of their equal. You lay into Duncan a total of twelve time, more than Marigold by a bit, to make sure they all understand the price of failure. When he can no longer stand on his own, you roll the whip back up, and have Duncan carried to the infirmary for an extended stay.

Now you're out two lieutenants for Baahl knows how long, and with a freshly conquered city. This operation has been a great deal more trouble than you'd anticipated. With only a few trained scrubs and a few more untrained ones to carry out your will, you'll have to be much more hands on. That is, unless something changes.

You spend the next few days reorganizing the people of your new province. You have the growers prioritize efficiency over value, since you'll no longer be trading with other territories whether you want to or not. You have the Ranchers switch to a more sustainable model, and restructure some local laws. First and foremost, you push for:

You force all able bodied men to enlist in your new military, save for those who's parents are killed in battle. This goes over poorly, but none dare question the law to your face. In a month's time, your fighting force stands at two thousand, and growing. You leave Duncan in charge of training them for now.

You also ban the wearing of pants. People don't seem too upset, and most simply switch to long tunics or kilts. It's actually quite a popular change when the summer heat rolls in.

Thirdly, you enforce mandatory Sunday Sex Soirees. This is received with very mixed reviews. It proves highly difficult to enforce such a law, but you suspect future generations will catch on.

As your commanders heal, and your power grows, you set your sights on distant horizons. After all, what's an empire without a navy?
