Something that I just thought of: We're hosting the Chunin Exams for the second time in four years. Shouldn't we have not done it for another two, if it was split evenly between the villages? Who's not in the roster, that it's come back to us so quickly?

Your group of four slows down as the Leaf Village Gate comes into view. It's still the afternoon of the day before the exams, so Sasuke has made it back with time to spare.

Aside from your two restful days on the boat trip back, you all once again traveled at top speed. There's no need to kill yourselves over this last leg with this much time left.

As the four of you walk, you notice teams here and there from other villages. This is the first time since the exams four years ago that they've been held in the Leaf, so it's almost nostalgic to see the variety here again.

You draw up to the gate at the same time as one of the Genin teams. Two of them are Sand ninja you don't recognize, but one you're quite familiar with. It's Gaara, sporting a different outfit from the last time you saw him.

"It's you." he says with the same stoic tone as ever, looking about your group. His gaze stops at Sasuke. "So I hear you are entering the exams again this year."

"That's right." Sasuke replies. "Like you, I also had some circumstances that prevented me for the last few years."

Gaara doesn't react. He looks as cold as the first time you ever saw him, before the Chunin Exams four years ago. Hopefully that doesn't mean he's still the same as he was then.

Cool concept art, man. Looking at it, it occurs to me that the way the sphere expands around the target should actually benefit us if someone tries to pop it before it contracts. Well, maybe not with Wind justu, since that just shut it down, but using Fire jutsu to defend against this thing is going to do more harm than good. It managed to destabilize Amaterasu, one of the most powerful and controllable Fire techniques. Anyone tries to get their way out of the sphere by burning it is just going to have their jutsu detonate right in their face.

Given how much stronger you've gotten, even if Gaara were to go back to his old ways, you could handle him easily. It's a far cry from the sheer terror you felt at his appearance in the Forest of Death. Though you hope for his sake, that he's changed.

"How's it going, Gaara?" you ask, waving. "You readjusting well to life?"

"It is strange." Gaara responds. "I once lived to kill others, and met a pathetic end. Many would find it fitting. But I've been reborn because someone thought my death was unfair. Surely it's some kind of joke."

As Gaara has been talking, his teammates have slipped away, clearly uncomfortable in his presence.

"Even now I don't know what I'm doing." Gaara goes on. "All at once, I was returned to life, then found out that somehow, my family still cares about me after everything I did. My father told me everything. My mother I thought died cursing my name, it was all a lie. My entire life was a lie. Where do I even go from here? I just don't know. They encouraged me to come to the exams again, and I merely did as I was told. I have no other recourse. At the very least, I know that I will not kill again. I've discovered for myself just how pointless it really is."

"Maybe." Gaara replies. "I will likely have nothing else to do between the second and third rounds. If you wish, you can introduce me then. For now, I'm going. I'll see you later."

Gaara turns and leaves in the direction that his teammates did. With that, the rest of your group disperses to go home and rest. You're all dead tired.

The next morning, you wake up and eat a hearty breakfast with your uncle before heading to the Hokage's office. Once there, you find Shikamaru as well. Sakura doesn't seem to have come, and Sasuke is obviously busy elsewhere.

"Given the Mist shinobi participating today, it seems you were met with a measure of success." Itachi begins. "Good work, you two. But I'm sure there's more to it, is there not? Are there going to be any issues?"

"They also want our help recovering their Seven Swords." you continue. "They have one, and four of them are unaccounted for. But Haku inherited one from Zabuza, and I think he should keep it. The last one is with B, so I don't know if we'll be able to negotiate for that one. Lastly they want joint training operations between the villages to strengthen their ninja."

"Hmm..." the Hokage taps his finger against his desk. "The joint training can be done, but it will take time. As for the swords, we'll have to do what we can. I will talk to B when he comes to see what he thinks. As for Haku, I'll try and vouch for him, but if it comes down to it, we might just have to confiscate it outright. I'd hate for it to come to that, but we'll see. Alright. I understand. I'll get ready to talk over the specifics with the Mizukage when she arrives. Which means, you are free to go. Unless you wanted to bring up something else?"

"As would we all, Kon." the Sixth responds. "We are well aware of the threat and will be doing all we can to mitigate it. B will only be present here with his brother for a few days before and during the thrid stage. But with all the powerful shinobi attending, I can't imagine even Madara Uchiha having the gall to show up and try to take them. Regardless, we will be ready. Don't you worry about that."

With that final concern addressed, you leave the Hokage's office. Itachi held Shikamaru back to talk for a bit, so you're on your own.

You decide to check in on Kiba's Sage training. You head to the training ground to find Kiba and all the ninja dogs sitting in a row, meditating. Lord Jiraiya is walking back and forth down the row holding some kind of staff. One of the dogs starts to turn kind of gray, and Jiraiya bops him over the head with it.

"You guys keep taking in too much." the Fifth sighs. "Why can't you be more like Akamaru?"

"Akamaru's just too smart, Lord Jiraiya!" Kiba laughs. "He took to nature chakra like a fish to water!"

Akamaru barks happily at the praise.

"Shut up and keep meditating, kid!" Jiraiya scolds, whacking Kiba with the staff. "I bet Kakashi could start right now and get Sage Mode down before you!"

You look over to find Kakashi also here, leaning against a tree and reading his book.

"I don't think that's necessary, Lord Jiraiya." Kakashi mumbles. "I don't think it's ready my style."

You show him what you've accomplished so far in the creation of a new technique, crushing some branches from a tree into a little ball, and ask him what he thinks.

"Creating an entirely new technique is always harder than learning an existing one." your teacher tells you. "The Fourth spent years creating the Rasengan, and it took me quite a while to create the Chidori as well. You're just having a bit of trouble molding the chakra just right. Once you get enough practice, the efficiency will go through the roof. When I first tried to create the chidori, it only covered my finger. Needless to say, it was a disappointment. But it wasn't necessarily because I was doing anything wrong, I just wasn't used to it yet. Give it time, and that technique of yours will become a lot more powerful than you expect."

You nod, then find a place to practice before going into Sage Mode. The rest of the day sees you trying again and again to expand to volume of your technique, to varying success. Later in the day as you tire out, Sasuke comes by. The sun is getting low, so you decide to call it, as does Kiba.

"Man, it's still tough." Kiba sighs. "All the dogs are having trouble gathering too much, while I still can't get enough."

"Yeah." Kiba sighs. "I can sense it, but when I try to gather it, it just... slips away. I don't know how to fix it."

"Well Sasuke and I had aids to help us when we went to train." you tell him. "Maybe you just need some help too. What if you did your combining move with Akamaru, then tried gathering nature chakra? Akamaru has learned to do it well, right?"

"That's not a bad idea." Kiba rubs his chin. "Lord Jiraiya talked about something like that, but he said that was for later when you need to sustain it. But I think it's worth a shot. I'll give it a go tomorrow."

After imparting that advice, you head home before it gets too late.

The next day, you wake up to go about your business again. Sasuke should be starting to go through the Forest of Death later today, so you won't see him for a few days.

You head back to the training ground to see if you can help Kiba out with his problem.

You and Kiba explain the idea to Lord Jiraiya. He doesn't like it, since it's out of the ususal order, but eventually he caves just to see if it works any better.

"Kiba hasn't made a bit of progress in these past two weeks." the Fifth says. "I guess that means it's time for a new approach."

You keep an eye on Kiba as he combines with Akamaru and starts to gather nature chakra. Surprisingly, he doesn't once come close to overshooting and turning to stone. Akamaru seems to be able to regulate the nature chakra perfectly.

Later in the day, you and Kiba are relaxing, tired from training.

"This is perfect!" Kiba tells you. "With Akamaru regulating the amount of nature chakra, I can focus on manipulating it! Nice call, Kon!"

"A bit unorthodox, but if it works, it works." Jiraiya scratches his head. "You should still keep practicing on going into Sage Mode on your own, though."

With Kiba's training well underway, you start to focus on your own. Over the next few days your control over your technique gets better and better, being able to exert much more pressure than before.

By this point, the second round should be over. You wonder how it went. You can't imagine Sasuke needs it, but they have a month until the final round.

You have an idea to mess with Sasuke before you get started on training. You head to his house, where Mikoto lets you in when you knock on the door. Sasuke is still at the table eating breakfast.

"Sasuke, in preparation for the third stage of the Chunin Exams, Genin have a month to train." you begin. "Therefore, you should use it to the fullest! I, a Jonin of immense reputation, will officially train you!"

Sasuke keeps eating, unamused.

"Of course. Right after I finish training under Konohamaru." Sasuke jests, finishing his meal. "But I could use a sparring partner. Kiba doesn't have much longer that they'll let him go without doing missions, and facing Kakashi Sensei over and over is getting kind of stale."

The two of you head to the training ground and get to work. Sasuke tells you he wants to take the exams without using his Mangekyo or Sage Mode, so you spar without breaking out any huge techniques.

Whenever you aren't sparring with Sasuke, you spend your time perfecting your technique. By the end of the month, it's almost perfect. The volume can envelop an entire person, and the pressure should be enough to crush just about anything. The downside though, is that it's hard to use at any distance. You have to be in Sage Mode, and the orb can only expand when you are touching it. You can move away and make it collapse, but not too far. These might change with time, however.

After nearly a month, the last round is nearly upon you. You wake up the day before. Tomorrow may be an important day, but today is important too. It's your seventeenth birthday.

She sets the box down near you so you can take it later.

You finish the dish you're making, then head out to greet them.

"Nonsense!" Akatsuchi calls. "My appetite can handle anything you can throw our way! I want the full course!"

Akatsuchi and the Tsuchikage seem adamant, so you go back to the kitchen and start fixing their order. One of everything may take a while.

As you work, you glance up and see other people arrive. Your teammates are here, as is Kakashi Sensei. Konohamaru and his team are also here. Eventually there's another surprise to the patrons, as the Kazekage enters the building, his three children accompanying him.

"I think I'll put a sign up, Kon." your uncle says, heading out front. "Reserved for Party. Don't want this place to get too crazy."

You manage to finish all of the Tsuchikage's order to find that they stuck a bunch of tables together to make a huge one. Apparently the Tsuchikage's footing the bill tonight.

Several more people arrive as your uncle comes back in.

"You can go out there and have a good time, Kon." he says. "Thanks for all your help today. I've got it covered from here."

As you keep cooking, you call Kiba and Kakashi Sensei into the kitchen to help wait tables. They give in with a little goading, and soon enough, all the food is fixed and served. You and your uncle leave the kitchen, and you're greeted by a loud cheer.

"Happy birthday, Kon!" About two thirds of the people in the restaurant yell at the same time.

You look around to see who's all here. Besides who you saw before, Guy and his team, Asuma and his team, and Kurenai, her daughter, and her team are all here. Lord Jiraiya and Tsunade are here, as are the parents of several of your classmates.

You don't see Neji or Lord Itachi here. They must be busy.

Everyone goes about and serves themselves some food while chatting. Your uncle finds his way over to Asuma and starts up a conversation.

You look to Konohmaru's left. Udon and Moegi seem a bit embarrassed.

You look to Gaara's table. He's eating dinner with his family. He and his father look extremely awkward, but Temari and Kankuro look quite happy.

You see Neji come in. He nods in your direction once he catches your glance, but he keeps moving. He pulls up to Kakashi, who stands up, and they start talking.

You turn to Gaara. "So how are things?"

"They've been worse." Gaara responds. "The exams to this point have been easy enough. Not like there was any challenge before. I think my match with Sasuke will be the only bit of trouble I'll meet. So the Sand should have a good enough showing this time around. My teammates were deathly scared of me the whole way through. It seems some things aren't so easily changed."

As you speak with Tenten, Neji and Kakashi Sensei come up to you.

"Sorry about this Kon, but I have to take off." Kakashi tells you. It's odd. he seems to be sweating a whole lot for some reason. "You have a nice birthday, alright? I should see you tomorrow."

"Indeed." Neji adds. "Sorry I couldn't be present longer, Kon. Happy birthday."

You look at the table. Onoki and Kurotsuchi have both eaten more than you'd expect, but of course the lion's share has gone to Akatsuchi. Somehow he's managed to eat over half of your menu.

"That was some good eatin." Akatsuchi pats his stomach. "I could never get tired of this!"

"Indeed." Kurotsuchi adds. "I could eat your food for every meal."

"Go ahead. I'm looking forward to seeing the full extent of your skill." Kurotsuchi replies. "You can come to the Stone and cook for me anytime."

The night goes on, and you make a few more rounds talking to everyone, but as it gets late, they all eventually leave. You help your uncle clean up after everyone leaves.

"Thanks again for all the help, Kon." he says. "You went and took time out of your birthday to help me out. You didn't have to do that, you know."

You both finish your work, and your uncle brings you in for a hug.

"But I guess that's just what you do." he goes on. "Happy birthday, Kon. You keep being a great kid. If I can still call you a kid, that is!"

After your uncle lets you go, you head upstairs to bed. Tomorrow you plan on relaxing while watching the matches. You can only hope everything goes that easily.

Most of the Kage are on somewhat rocky terms. The exceptions are the Kazekage and Hokage, since Rasa knows he's got off a lot easier than he could. And the Raikage and Mizukage see each other as potential allies if the Leaf gets too dangerous
