“You've had that same smug face for two days now.” you tell Rin with a somewhat annoyed tone.

Rin's expression grows even more smug and self-satisfied at your words.

“It was not so bad John. I did love getting your opinion on what looked best on me.” Cecilia tells you with a sensual look in her eyes.

“And it was great they had a lot of different sizes. Usually it's hard to get so many cute designs that fit me.” Houki adds happily.

Looks everyone enjoyed shopping there with you in tow.

You are John Smith, only know male IS pilot, currently riding in a limousine to the Fairy Arms and Manufacturing Factory in western Washington. The comparatively short flight from LA to Seattle wasn't as pleasant as you would like. Rin could not stop laughing the entire time. She had that smug expression whenever she looked at you. It must be because of the day before with your 'punishment'. Going inside Victoria's Secret wasn't terrible, it was all the staring from everyone else. Every single woman there would stare at you with a wide range of expressions that only made it feel awkward for you. As if you were treading onto forbidden grounds. But you had to stand firm while the girls went shopping.

“I don't see the point of all the designs. Underwear should be functional.” Laura counters with a flat tone.

“But didn't you like it when John was embarrassed when you held up that one lacy teddy?” Charlotte asks while looking at you.

Laura realizes Charlotte's words and begins to blush as she replies with a small, “Yes.”

“Maybe, we should do that again. It's nice being able to get your opinion.” Charlotte says with a teasing smile.

“No please.” you reply quickly.

“But I really enjoyed watching everyone stare daggers at you. You were so helpless there. I wish I could have recorded it.” Rin replies with a completely smug tone.

Sure, most of the other women there did not like you being there but you don't like how Rin is using that against you. It may be time to counterattack.

[]Let them have their fun for now and wait for a better chance to tease them later.

You decide to wait for a better opportunity. Maybe after the factory visit when you are able to get them alone.

“What no quip back?” Rin asks with an overly confident tone.

“All of you enjoyed me being there so I shouldn't mind it too much.” you answer. “Even you enjoyed me being there.” you add with a slight grin.

Rin blushes slightly before replying with an annoyed, “Hmph. As if.”

After half an hour scenic drive, the limo finally stops at the entrance of the main Fairy Arms compound. The guards checked everyone's Ids before letting you through. Inside, the limo stops in front of the main building. Getting out, you stretch a bit before you are greeted by the welcoming party.

“I'm Lieutenant Irma Thesleff, John. And I see Walken was right that you brought your friends with you.” Lt Thesleff greets you.

“That is right and I've heard good things about you Lt. Thesleff.” you reply as you reach out to handshake her.

“Irma is fine.” Irma replies as returns your handshake, “Why don't we get everyone introduced.”

“Sounds good.” you reply.

Cecilia, Charlotte, Laura, Houki, Rin and you introduce yourself to the welcoming party. At first, the Fairy Arms people were reluctant due their status of being foreign Candidate Reps, but Irma was able to smoothing things over. Chouhei Kambayashi, the lead designer of the Maeve, was particularity interested in your opinions on the Maeve and how well she flies with Reinforce. Another major designer of the Maeve, Jack Bukhar, was keen on your opinion on the aerodynamics and how well she flies. You were also able to meet the designers for all of the major components of the Maeve along with some people from PR.

“Since introductions are out of the way, where should we start the tour?” Chouhei asks you.

“How about at the Equipment Development Area. I'm sure you would like to hear the new options for bus slots that we've been testing.” Irma suggests.

[]Go with Irma's suggestion.

“Since you're a fellow pilot, why don't you lead the way Irma.” you decide.

“My pleasure.” Irma replies as she begins to lead the way.

Irma leads the group past several points of interest. Past the Main Manufacturing Line, Engine Assembly line, several Machine Rooms and the Avionics Testing Lab is the Bus Slot Equipment Development Area.

“Here you'll find that we develop some in house equipment for the Maeve's bus slots here. Sometimes we even test the comparability with bus slot equipment on the market with the IS' developed here.” Irma explains.

“And the in house developments are probably using our flight data.” you comment.

“Correct.” Irma replies.

“We've made great strides in the fire control and weapon energy distribution system with your data. We didn't expect there to be such a difference on power usage during combat.” Chouhei tells you. “Usually Irma would use a bit less than 2/3s of the total amount of power you would use.” Chouhei adds.

“I usually only face off against Louise or Iris' squad mates. So naturally I would focus more on maneuverability and evasion.” Irma replies.

“How often do you practice?” you ask, curious.

“About 2 times every 2 or 3 days. Getting data is our primary purpose so we have to make sure we are able to collect everything.” Irma answers you after some thought.

“Working with the US Army and Grunder Industries can be problematic at times. But at least the US Navy is viewing our developments with great interest.” Chouhei adds.

“Typical American extravagance.” Rin quips.

“No need to be angry that alliances brings strength. Much like how the UK-US alliance brings both of us wealth and prestige.” Cecilia counters with a proud tone.

Chouhei walks over to a Gram that has been disassembled and laid out.

“When the US Navy heard about the changes you had Edith make to the Gram, they were ecstatic. A 5 round burst without loss of power was something the Navy loved.” Chouhei explains as he look over the various components to the Gram.

“When we tested that against the Fang Quake, it was a big help to wear down their shields and armor.” Irma adds.

“How about any advancements in C3 equipment? I've been thinking that since the Second Shift, it would be better to work on that.” you ask.

“You don't possibly mean you can data link between IS'?” Chouhei asks intensely as he holds your shoulders.

“Yes actually. You can ask them if you are curious.” you answer, motioning towards Laura, Charlotte, Houki, Rin and Cecilia.

“The targeting data was excellent. As expected of my husband.” Laura announces, her confidence in you clear.

“John's ability to lead us was key to our victory.” Houki adds with pride.

“Not only was John's data of extreme use, but his modifications to my bits made using the information effortless.” Cecilia states proudly.

“It made working together with everyone easy. Being able to coordinate so easily made was a big relief.” Charlotte tells everyone happily.

After everyone looks at Rin, she finally says, “Yeah, it was nice getting all the tactical data without having to manipulate anything or with incessant commands through the comms.”

“We should head straight to IS Maintenance to start a full diagnostics and see how much the Maeve has changed.” Chouhei says with almost a demanding tone.

“That would explain why Iris called and why Major Walken worked for that approval.” Irma comments.

“You are probably right. We should see what the Maeve's bus slots are before we start looking at equipment.” you tell him.

“Excellent.” Chouhei replies as he starts to lead you out.

Chouhei pushes you from behind as everyone follows. After a rather fast walk, all of you arrive at the Fairy Arms IS Maintenance area. At Chouhei's and Jack's insistence, you deploy your Maeve on a waiting docking station.

“Rejoice!” Jack yells out, “Look at those graceful aerodynamic lines. That thruster configuration. The way the body blends with the engines and that smooth armor articulation”

“Is he ok?” Charlotte asks Irma.

“I guess. But he usually doesn't get this worked up.” Irma answers in a way that Jack can't hear her.

Chouhei and Jack, along with several waiting techs, attach the diagnostic equipment to begin testing.

“The wing pylons look different that what I would expect for a Second Shifted Maeve.” Irma comments.

“That is because the weapons are now located inside an internal weapons bay.” you reply to clarify.

“Why is that? Usually weapons are held in the undeployed mode using the bus slots.” Irma asks, intrigued by the change.

“I think it's when I ask Ms Foss to attach Fragarch to the right wing pylon for better performance. And I do like quickly switching out weapons.” you answer.

“Not only that John. But by quickly switching out weapons to achieve a tactical advantage, Maeve learned to adapt accordingly. And by allowing me to autonomously target and fire those weapons the configuration was changed.” Reinforce further clarifies.

“Oh my.” Irma replies surprised.

“Could it be? You can speak?” Chouhei asks, stunned at Reinforce's voice.

“Hello father and sister.” Reinforce answers.

“I don't believe it. You can actually talk.” Chouhei says, almost moved to tears.

The pendant on Irma's necklace flashes several times before stopping.

“Could it be you want to talk to your sister, Elna?” Irma asks her Maeve.

It flashes once in response.

Chouhei and the techs see that and quickly clear room for another docking station for Irma's Maeve. Without any pauses, a clean docking station is brought next to your Maeve. Irma deploys her Maeve onto the waiting station. There, techs quickly attack another set of diagnostic equipment along with some lines connecting the two Maeve's for communications. You notice that Irma's Maeve is configured differently than what your First Shift Maeve was.

“To think she can talk. I want to hear Elna's voice.” Irma says to herself.

“I know the US military is the leader in AI and drone weapons but this is a bit much.” Rin comments.

“Nonsense. Equipment has been getting smarter and more accurate since the start of the Information Era. AI augmented weapons are becoming increasingly common and are often standard in conventional militariess.” Laura counters with a matter of fact tone.

“But they will never replace a human operator.” Cecilia adds.

“That's right. Human will is what makes the difference.” Houki says with strength in her voice.

“Do all Maeve's have a support AI like Reinforce?” Charlotte asks.

>>
“No. There are only three sister Ais. The others use self-optimizing learning non-sentient algorithms based on our data.” Irma answers, “The three of them are far too precious to be used only as component in a weapon.”

“Poor copies?” you ask.

“No. It's more like we learn the lessons from Elna, Reinforce and Mary to establish the baselines for the algorithms to use.” Irma answers.

Interesting, this could pay off in more ways than you thought. It looks like Chouhei is completely entranced with talking with Reinforce and Elna. And Jack is fawning over the sleek curves of the Second Shifted form.

“How about the configuration on your Maeve? Yours is a bit sleeker than mine.” you ask, curious on her thoughts.

“Elna and I focused on ultra high-speed maneuverability with any extra shield capacitors we could fit.” Irma answers.

“Why is that? Was having a mix of weapons not that viable?” you continue to ask.

“You can say that. Between the active defense Louise uses and the firepower and armor a Fang Quake has, it's hard to stay close and not rely on hit and run tactics. The passive camo coating has had some effect and the laser diffraction equipment has had it's uses. But nothing will beat speed and good maneuvering.” Irma replies.

“I did get the feeling that the Maeve is bit of a glass cannon. Especially when you compare it to other 3rd Gen IS.” you comment.

“No need to worry about that John. You can always rely on my Schwarzer Regen and my AIC to protect you.” Laura says with utmost confidence.

“Thanks Laura” you tell her with a smile.

“You can also rely on me too, John.” Charlotte adds.

“Me too.” Cecilia adds, loud enough to make sure she isn't forgotten.

“My sword and I are at your side.” Houki says confidently.

“It's great you can rely on your friends on such matters.” Irma replies with smile.

“So what specifically do you have equipped in your bus slots?” you ask, continuing on.

“Let's see, out of the 8 slots, I only only have 2 additional weapons. The rest are either going to improve my shields or engines.” Irma answers.

“What are the two weapons?” you ask, letting your curiosity get the better of you.

“Other than the Gram, Fragarch and Caladbolg, I typically use the Chemrail and AGS-40.” Irma answers.

“If I had to guess, you use the Chemrail for it's high rate of fire for hit and run and the AGS-40 for distractions and pinning.” you comment, thinking out loud.

“Not quite. The Chemrail is good for countering missiles and the Fang Quake's active protection system when used in combination with Fragarch. And the AGS-40 is for utility and for its high damage to IS shields.” Irma says to correct you.

“So that is how you got past the Fang Quake's APS missiles. I was wondering if Fragarch would get past it. And I use the Witchcraft recoil-less rifle in a similar manner to the way you use the AGS-40.” you reply, now thinking it over.

Charlotte and Rin are listening quite intently on your conversation while Laura only showed any interest when the Fang Quake's APS was mentioned. Cecilia is watching the diagnostic your Maeve is undergoing. And Houki is passively listening on your thoughts.

“But what about the rest of bus slots? You have 6 just for shield and thruster upgrades.” you continue to ask.

“I have two bus slots used just for the engines. One to improve the acceleration and one to improve the efficiency of the AG engine on the IS. Another is used to increase the output on the thrusters for better maneuverability at high speed. And the last three are used on a single chained shield capacitor.” Irma explains.

“A chained shield capacitor? I never heard of such a thing being developed.” Charlotte asks.

“You usually have to have separate shield capacitors or it wouldn't work.” Rin adds to supplement Charlotte.

“It's not that it wouldn't work. You would just suffer a cascading failure in the shield capacitors making them unusable at best. Catastrophic failure at worse.” Irma answers.

“So it must be something that can't be used away from here. Would be nice to have a bit more in the way of shield strength.” you reply.

“We have been working on it every time my Maeve goes in for maintenance after every practice match. But little headway has been made.” Irma tells you with a slight touch of disappointment in her voice.

So that must be the difference between the way IS' are used at the Academy and used by professionals. The skill of the other pilots makes it much harder to hit reliably. And the difference between IS Frames are a bigger factor than you initially thought with how they are leveraged.

[]Check on Reinforce and Chouhei about the diagnostic the Maeve is going under.

While Charlotte and Rin continue to ask Irma questions with Laura listening in, Houki and Cecilia follow you to where Chouhei is.

“So how is the diagnostic going?” you ask.

“We're about a third of the way through. The subtle differences between your First and Second Shifted forms is truly remarkable. The way the sensors and fire control systems are parallelized is ground breaking. The distributed sensor blisters must allow an ever greater acuity with the IS' hyper sensors. And all that information is perfectly integrated thanks to Reinforce.” Chouhei tells you with much excitement.

“Are you kidding? Look at how the articulation of the arm and legs. The way they gracefully blend into the body and engines. You're talking about at least a 23% decrease in drag. And have you even seen the engines and AG systems? This isn't something you can find anywhere. We are talking about a new generation of propulsion technology. Flying circles around a Fang Quake or Morgan would be effortless.” Jack retorts, wondering over the improvements.

Houki can only react with a slightly nervous laugh over their excitement while Cecilia is listening to better understand the changes.

“What do you think Reinforce?” you ask, wanting to hear her opinion.

“I really do enjoy talking normally.” Reinforce answers.

“Yeah, it's a joy for everyone to hear your voice.” you reply with a smile.

“To hear you talk makes all the work I've done worthwhile.” Chouhei adds, the mix of emotions clear in his voice.

“I enjoy talking with you father.” Reinforce replies happily.

“I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the DNI yet.” you comment.

And that is when everyone looks at you.

“DNI?” Houki asks, completely not understanding the acronym.

“Are you serious? A Direct Neural Interface?” Jack asks, completely flabbergasted at your words.

“That explains why Reinforce and John are able to share information and tactical data without any lag. And what the communications and new data linking systems are centered around.” Chouhei says, realizing what he the missing link.

“The diagnostic hasn't gotten that far.” Reinforce informs you.

“I'm not seeing how that is so important.” Houki comments.

“A DNI allows me to control systems on the Maeve with just a thought. I don't need to use the normal IS controls to do something.” you tell her.

“Oh, I see.” Houki replies as she softly hits her open palm with her fist.

“It's what allowed me to easily me to data link and share the right combat data to each of you.” you add.

“How much?” Cecilia asks with a very thoughtful voice.

“I don't think it's that simple.” Chouhei replies.

“How much? Money is not a concern.” Cecilia retorts, now with a bit more force in her voice.

“Miss, it's not a matter of money. There is safety concerns not to mention concerns of National Defense.” Jack tells Cecilia.

“There should be no problem. John has already helped me by develop the new programming on my Bits, which are a British Military secret.” Cecilia informs him.

“We don't even know the long terms effects of the DNI. Edith has been holed up working on something since she came back here for the summer.” Chouhei replies, trying to explain their position.

“Not to mention that Grunder has their own DNI developed. We have to make sure there isn't any problems legally.” Jack adds.

Wait a minute Ms Foss is here? Hopefully she isn't angry about you avoiding her for a week. And the news that Grunder Industries also developed and DNI independent of you is quite the revelation. But you aren't which question to ask first.

[]Ask about Grunder Industries DNI.

“I didn't realize there was another company that developed an DNI.” you say, realizing that your Maeve isn't the only IS with a DNI.

“You mean Grunder's DNI? They call it the ENSI, Electro-Neural Synapse Interface. Effectively it's a DNI with a fancy name.” Jack tells you.

“While they haven't published it, they have been talking about 99.9999% compatibility with IS pilots with zero harm when used.” Chouhei adds.

“Well, it is an offshoot of their COFFIN system they've been developing for the US Air Force.” Jack says matter of factly.

COFFIN? Where have you heard that before? Was it when Uncle Eli and you were talking about new technology and their effect on war when your Dad started war gaming with some of the topics that came up. Maybe?

“I think the DNI is different from theirs. How can I put it, it's a bit more intimate than a simple interface.” you tell them, not letting too much uncertainty in your voice.

“Intimate, is the right word to use.” Reinforce adds.

“If that is true, we should get Edith. We can't have anything bad happen to you because we weren't careful enough.” Chouhei tells you.

“Did someone call me?” Ms Foss says after she opens the door closest to you.

“Good timing Edith, we were starting to get a bit worried about any side effects of the DNI for John's Second Shifted Maeve.” Chouhei answers.

“Hi Ms Foss. Didn't realize you were here.” you say, not letting any of your worry into your voice.

“It was quite troublesome that you went missing for a week, but I'm glad you are alright.” Ms Foss tells you.

Cecilia and Houki give off a nervous laugh at her words.

“I wasn't missing, just enjoying my first week of summer vacation.” you reply with as calm a voice as you can.

“Then you enjoyed yourself.” Ms Foss says coldly.

“I did.” you reply, now seeing how cold and predatory her eyes have become.

“That's good to hear. A tired test subject won't last as long as a healthy, well rested one.” Ms Foss tells you as her voice turns cold.

“Be nice Edith.” Chouhei chides Ms Foss.

“But Chouhei, he evaded us for over a week just after he Second Shifted. Do you know how small that island the Japanese IS Acadamy is built on?” Edith replies with a completely different, almost soft tone.

“Didn't I always tell you, you have to work on your bedside manner.” Chouhei lightly chastises Ms Foss with an almost playful tone.

“The post combat medical data was not enough.” Ms Foss replies, slightly frustrated. “Anyway, GET HIM!” Ms Foss orders.

Several of the tech and support crew from IS Academy come rushing in and surround you. Unable to escape, you prepare for a fight. Just as you begin to take a combat stance, they shoot you with a net gun. With a practiced motion, they quickly pick you up and cart you off to an unknown area of the building before any of the girls can react.
