You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.

You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. For what purpose does AETHER exist, what mysteries lie within and how is victory achieved?

[6:30 pm, 25-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

“Takashi, we’re out of milk and orange juice. Could you go down to the shops tonight and buy some?”

“What?” You exclaim, your voice faintly bouncing around the hallway separating the dining room from the bedroom section of the apartment. “Why me and why now?”

“Because I’m going to work and I’m going to be tired enough as it is when I get back. As for the other one, I need it tomorrow to make French toast.” Even though your vision is currently being occupied the shiny chrome paneling of your bedroom door, you can practically see your nee-san’s teasing smirk and her waggling index finger. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

You freeze in place. She’s got you there, like a moth caught in a burning fly trap. Already your imagination is being filled up by that wonderful eggy bread. That crisp bread, those delicious sugars and spices, the incredible strawberry jam laid on top…no, focus! You can’t let her get the upper hand.

“Okay, but can’t that wait until later?” You protest, hand already on the doorknob. “I was sort of wanting to do my homework first. The supermarket is open 24-7.”

“And then you’ll waste time on the Internet and forget about it completely once done, won’t you?” Shizuka sounds unimpressed. “You can do your homework once you get back from shopping.”

“Nee-san, why are you sounding like kaa-san?”

“I’m taking that as a compliment, alright?” Shizuka says. “You know, if you wanted to relax, you could do it outside. Take a walk outside or something. You should go out more.”

“I’m going out heaps!” You retort.

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah! Like, I’ve been going to the gym and martial arts club at school. Also, I eat lunch with my friends on the school roof at times and then there’s the exploration—”

Your brain catches up with the words pouring out of your mouth and sets off a hundred alarm bells. You clamp your mouth shut, preventing the flow of information about your life-and-death battles with the Shadows from spilling out and creating a huge sticky mess on the floor. Loose lips sink ships, and yours had been on a collision course with an iceberg so enormous it would’ve destroyed the Titanic a dozen times over. Thank god the Hebi-Ko hot springs rid you of all wounds. Otherwise, you might’ve had to answer some awkward questions to your nee-san and kaa-san. Questions about why your skin was coated in more dust than sweat, or how those bullet had managed to drill their way into your flesh.

You’re also certain you were mere moments from telling your sister about Kozue. You’re not sure which would make Shizuka throw the bigger fit: you fighting Shadows on a regular basis or you going out at night to visit a little blonde girl and play with her, alone.

“Pardon?” Shizuka calls, bringing you back to reality.

“Uh, nothing, nee-san!” You reply. “Okay, you win. I’ll go out and buy the milk and juice now.”

“See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”

You groan. “I’m only doing this because I want the French Toast, okay?”

“So I still win, then? Lucky me!”

“Shut up…”

After putting on your jacket and waiting for your nee-san to go to work, you take the elevator downstairs, taking a left turn towards the nearby supermarket. This one is a brilliant monstrosity, occupying the breadth of the entire block like an obese troll covered in Christmas lights. It’s also sponsored by the Hanamura Corporation. How very appropriate, then. You wouldn’t be surprised if you found the desecrated remains of coffee shops and Chinese diners beneath the building’s mighty girth.

You enter through the double doors, mentally blocking out the shrill notes of the supermarket’s ‘charming’ little jingle. The place is crowded with tired housewives and bulky steel shopping trolleys. You opt for a basket and head to the milk fridges.

The moment you place your hand on the fridge doors is the moment when Akikazu’s lessons come blasting back to you in full force. Useful life tips about expiration dates pound through your skull amongst a field of shouts, swear words and strained voice boxes. Groaning for yourself, you ignore the bottles in front and reach for the ones in the back.

‘More natural than ever!’ the label says, which in this case means the cows milked were injected with slightly less hormones than usual. Not that this discourages you. No, in fact you accept it with gusto because this is what passes for healthy foodstuffs these days. You heard that the people of the past would’ve rejected milk like this on sight. No doubt they would have called you an idiot for making your purchase. Well, they didn’t have to deal with the troubles of overpopulation and lack of natural resources, so there.

Your thoughts linger back to what Eriko Ozaki said to you this afternoon. It’s inevitable considering Akikazu is on your mind. So the two of them are childhood friends, in the vein of Kanami and Takauji, huh? That’s cool, you guess. You didn’t have anyone like that, so you wouldn’t know. How would the rest of the academy react, then? You’d guess they’d either be in various states of despair. Or something.

But what about that personal problem Eriko said Akikazu has, the reason why the two of them are no longer talking to each other? Apparently she feels she no longer has the right to help him with it, so she’s clearly guilty about something the two of them did in the past. But what? If she thinks she shouldn’t help him, why did she approach him in the first few weeks of the semester? Was it a half-hearted gesture of assistance, or something deeper?

Come to think of it, doesn’t the name Osaragi sound a tad familiar? Maybe you’re only thinking that because you’ve known Akikazu for a while. It’s likely nothing; a lot of Japanese people could have the same surname. Then again, you could be wrong about that. You don’t have a list of most common surnames in Japan handy.

Agh, so many questions! Best shelf this until the future. Hopefully you’ll have more information to go off on then. Now is the time to buy juice and maybe those chocolate oranges Celeste recommended in her AETHER text messages.

You head for the snacks and drinks section and browse through a series of orange juice brands, settling on the ones with a special in the end. Then you decide to buy some cola and candy for yourself. Before you can grab the bottle you want, you notice someone else reaching out for it.

“Oh man, we meet again!”

It’s that guy you and Celeste met on the train. His name is Chi…Chikashi something. You can’t remember. It’s not your fault, really! You didn’t think you would see him again!

“Hey, Wakui!” the boy says with a smile. “How ya doing?”

>“Look, I’m busy. I don’t have time to chat. Now give me the cola.”

I've been waiting for this!

In other news, I took a second look at the complaints about the social stat dice rolls from last thread. I then decided to write a program (in Java) in which two sides roll a 1d20, with crits and critfails on and off, and see which one comes out on top. I also added positive and negative modifiers.

Here are the results, if anyone is interested:

http://pastebin.com/uXNJ6A0a

Yeah...

Seems like changes are necessary. So from now on, the modifier for social stat rolls will be:

>(recommended rank – current rank - 1) * -4.

So a disparity of one rank will result in no modifiers. RNG is cruel enough as it is.

If this proves to be too broken I'll revise it again.

“I’m good…” You blurt out as you rack your brains for this guy’s last name. “You?”

“Yeah, I’m doing great! I just got my paycheck from work over the burger bar. Thought I might treat myself to sugar, man.”

“Oh, that’s cool, I guess…”

It starts with a ‘Y’. You’re certain about this.

“What about you? What are you doing here?”

“Uh, grocery shopping. For milk and stuff.”

Yone! That’s right. This guy’s name is Chikashi Yone. He’s from your old high school and you somehow don’t remember ever meeting him. Maybe he was the class president and therefore had the responsibility of memorizing the names of everyone in the class. You doubt it, though. This guy doesn’t seem like he has the disposition to lead others.

“Sorry, could you let go of the cola? I need it.”

“No problem, man! There’s heaps of bottles next to it. I’ll just grab this one here…”

You walk around the aisle and pick out the snacks and drinks you want. Ooh, that box of chocolate sticks look nice. So does the bag of Jack Frost candies. This is all going on Shizuka’s macca payment, so you have zero hesitation in doing this.

You head over to the checkout machines to pay. For some reason, the Chikashi Yone guy still following you. He’s talking your ear off, spewing out dialogue lines in a manner that reminds you of water rushing out of a broken dam.

“Hey, Wakui! What’s Akumachi-Kirijo Academy like? I've heard a lot of rumors about it, but I know you can tell me more.”

“Well…”

“The food is good.” You mutter, omitting the taste of the infamous mapo tofu out of your mind. “The toilets are regularly cleaned, too. That means it’s already way better than Marineki.”

“Yeah, I totally get what you’re saying!” Chikashi crosses his arms and nods his head. “You can’t walk ten paces in the stalls without finding a piece of graffiti or a wad of used toilet paper.”

You resist the urge to gag. Certain memories are beginning to resurface. Memories that weren’t so much repressed as lost in the chaos surrounding AETHER and the Blackened Void.

“And, uh, I’ve made friends there.” You admit in a desperate attempt to shake your mind of urinals and dirty sinks. “So my experience with my new academy is great, I guess.”

“Ehhh?” Chikashi does a double take, nearly topping into a rack of chocolate bars and mint packets. “I’m not your friend?”

“No offence, but I don’t really remember you.” You say.

“Come on!” Chikashi moans, “We were in the same class in the second year!”

“It still isn’t ringing any bells.”

Chikashi gives up, his mood deflating like a balloon with a hole in the middle of it.

“If it’s any consolation, I’m sorry.” You say. You’re not going to pat him on the back. That would be weird.

“Ah, whatever, man.”

You make your purchase and exit the supermarket. Again, Chikashi is beside you. He’s recovered from his previous, brief slump and now is displaying a silly, elated grin. He fumbles with his phone, smiles at it, before putting it back in his pocket and facing you.

“Hee hee, never gets old. Okay, I’m off, man. See you later, Wakui!”

“Bye, then.” You say, waving and turning in the opposite direction. Chikashi’s back is soon enveloped into the omnipresent crowd of the city. You’re still confused about the guy, especially the way he acts all friendly towards you. If you actually had friends before you came to Akumachi-Kirijo, you would have remembered them. There is no way you would have forgotten someone as precious as that. But you don’t. You didn’t have any friends before receiving the Wild Card, because you were a weak-willed, shy child. A frail will, ordinary smarts, uncharismatic and with a tendency to blurt out the wrong things at the wrong time. Nobody would approach you and part of you back then had preferred to keep it that way.

So what’s Chikashi’s deal? Does he actually want to be friends with you? That’s a little hard when you barely know him. He comes across as more annoying than approachable.

Even so, you don’t think he’s a bad guy. Maybe you should apologize again when you see him, if at all.

Anyway, mission accomplished. You have successfully purchased the most optimal milk and juice, along with a few extras for yourself. Akikazu would be so proud. Or rather, he’d call you less of an idiot while giving one of his rare smiles. As for your nee-san…it might be best to hide the snacks in your room until further notice.

Well, remember that Takashi apparently has some memory repression issues or amnesia or something, what with the whole situation in the hospital where he didn't recognize his sister. [8:15 am, 26-May-2129 (THURSDAY)]

The skies are overcast with grey clouds. Nevertheless, you consider it to be a fine morning. You wake up refreshed, eat the French toast that Shizuka cooked, meet up with your best friend outside the apartment building and walk to school chatting with her.

You arrive at the academy gates together and notice someone standing in front of it. It’s the FALCO House Captain. She’s loitering around the area with her back to the wall, beneath the sign displaying the academy name, in an effort not to impede the path with her presence. She perks up when she catches a glimpse of you.

“Wakui-san!” she calls, sprinting up to you. “Um, please forgive me, but I need to talk to you. This is quite urgent.”

“Oh, sure.” You reply. “Sorry Celeste, could you go on without me?”

“No problem!” Celeste gives you a thumbs up, before strolling ahead and merging with the sea of black uniforms and skirts surging towards the entrance. Yoshino sighs before leading you towards a secluded part of the front courtyard.

The two of you sit down on a bench. Yoshino presses her fingers together, swallowing.

“I got an email from Eriko last night. She said you were being bullied by a girl named Sae Kushakawa.” She says, “Eriko also mentioned she herself resolved the situation. But still, are you alright?”

“Oh, that? Yeah, I'm fine.”
>>
>>45563649
Hah, "bullying". That's a good one, Yoshino. That wasn't her bullying us, that was her marking herself as a target.

Yoshino presses further. “Are you sure?”

You lean back. Yoshino is gazing at you with a raw intensity in her eyes. “Senpai, it’s not like they physically harmed me or anything.”

“Even so, it’s unacceptable! This academy is supposed to be a bully-free zone!” Yoshino exclaims, her voice growing hot like a furnace. Then she realizes what she has done and takes a few deep breaths. “Listen, Wakui-san, if Kushakawa and her friends try and do this again, or anything similar, don’t hesitate in telling me. I’ll make sure they’ll get their just desserts!”

“Um, thanks, senpai? You don’t have to do all of this for me, you know.”

“I’m the FALCO House Captain and I’m a member of the student council!” Yoshino rebuts. “This is my duty. And…and I’m stronger than Sae Kushakawa, too! I'm a B-rank. If disciplinary action won't make her listen, I’ll challenge her to a duel and beat her. Not that I actually like fighting, but it’s the thought that counts, right?”

>“I appreciate it, senpai.”

I think physical attributes would be a good place to go, for now. Try to get the most out of the new Chi Casting moves we have by building up the baseline that they enhance.
>>
>>45563848
Dev., it's worth it, we just need to start training Skills and Abilities.

>>
>>45563950
SP and HP regen are strong, Victory Cry is better but that's probably out of our league.

We should also train Abilities like Chi Casting, Augmentation, and Savate
>>
>>45563960
How much is needed before we can level Dev. to S? I feel like we're getting pretty close.
>>
I personally think we should try to work at the café with Celeste, because butler and Charisma and Magician SL, but house assistant could be good

>>
>>45563848
I'd say Str. Maybe Agi. We have Aki as a tank, Cel as our mage, Fumi as our spotter, so we should go for being a striker that can use both magic and strength to deliver devistating blows.

In short; we become the muscle wizard.

“I appreciate it senpai, but you seem stressed.” You say, inching back more with hands in a surrendering position. “You’re not normally this outspoken.”

“Sorry…” Yoshino retreats, now looking shameful. It’s the type of shame reserved for children who accidentally paint on the walls of their kindergarten, as opposed to the shame displayed by teenagers when their parents discover the flash drive of erotica under the bed. “I was just…so angry after reading Eriko’s email. Who does this Kushakawa girl think she is? All of the work piling up doesn’t help, either…”

“The third years have it tough, huh…” You mutter.

“It’s not just schoolwork. I have couple of siblings to take care of. Then there’s my House Captain responsibilities…ah, if only that House Assistant wasn’t leaving soon.”

“Pardon?”

Yoshino must think you to be interested, because she continues to ramble on and on. “One of your House Assistants is leaving for America in a few weeks. I can’t blame him, but it means my workload will essentially double. If only someone would volunteer to fill in, but I can’t see that happening. Everyone in this academy is so busy with clubs and such…”

She stares down at the grass, her eyes shining with frustrated tears. Or maybe it’s the crushing realization of dozens of sleepless nights and that she will have to consume far more coffee than what is recommended to any high school student.

“No, I can’t complain, not in front of my own kouhai!” She slaps herself on the cheeks and presses her hands to her chest. “Fight, Yoshino, fight! You can do it!”

She stands up and turns to you, fists clenched. Then a shrill, ringing out pierces her ears and she panics.

“Ack! That’s the bell! I’m going to be late!” She cries. “Sorry Wakui-san, I have to go! Let me know if Kushakawa tries to trouble you again!”

She rushes off, leaving a dust cloud in her wake. You blink, before walking towards Class 5-3 at your own pace.
>>
>>45564293
>>45564243
It's not like a real job where we have to go in all the time and lose out on other stuff because of it, it's just like all the other clubs - pop in when we need something and then leave when we don't. >>Takashi: Go and find Yoshino.

“Eh?” Yoshino’s voice reverberates throughout the FALCO House room. She drops the pen she has in her hands, a look of pure surprise etched on her otherwise neurotic features. “You want to volunteer to become a House Assistant?”

“Well, I didn’t say that…” You say, rubbing the back of your neck. “I was thinking I might be able to help you out here and there.”

Yoshino chews her lip. “Is this because I complained to you in the courtyard this morning?’

“Yeah, sort of…” You refrain from admitting she looked like a lost puppy that had been kicked one too many times.

She shakes her head. “You shouldn’t take what I said seriously. You know how it is, sometimes you don’t sleep well and you wake up and say things you don’t mean.”

“I think the fact that you’re not sleeping well is already a sign that you need help.” You point out. “Also, what’s with all the paperwork that’s piled up over in the corner?”

“It’s going to be done today!” Yoshino says hastily, grabbing a sheet off the pile and scribbling on it. “Really!”

“Not convinced, senpai.”

Seeing as you aren’t going to be budge any time soon, Yoshino stands out of her chair and looks you directly in the eye. There are bags beneath them. You see her fight off the urge to yawn in your face.

“I appreciate it, Wakui-san, I truly do. But should you really be doing this? You’re probably already a very busy person with after-school activities. A House Assistant has to drop everything for the sake of his or her House and includes clubs.”

Well, that is true…

“It’s not like I’ll be alone in handling this, either. The other House Assistant will still be here for the next couple of weeks. That’s plenty of time for me to write up a plan for scheduling my workload. It’ll no doubt suck up more of my free time, but I anticipated this the moment I signed up for this position.”

She gives you a tired smile. “I’ll be okay, so there’s no need for you to become involved in this. If I really need assistants, I’ll put a notice on the academy message board. You can apply then if being a House Assistant is what you really want to do. Let me warn you, it isn’t as fun as spending time with your friends at club.”

How do you respond?

It was level 4 though

I'm not sure. I think it might be that it's level three to become House Assistant through the normal channels, level four to get Yoshino to admit she needs help now before the official channels can do anything.

You have failed. Yoshino fiddles with her hands, her expression twisting into a look of remorse.

“I’m sorry, but it wouldn’t be right of me to accept you. Listen, Wakui-san! Being a House Assistant is a large responsibility. Becoming one isn’t a decision you should rush on. Like I said, it sucks up a lot of your time and isn’t that fun. You need to think more about this. It hasn’t even been a whole day…”

“I…” You open your mouth to make the retort creeping at the edge of your lips. Then you see the pleading gaze Yoshino is giving you. Your arms slump to your shoulders. You relent.

“I see, senpai. Sorry I bothered you.”

“No, no, no, it’s my fault for giving you the wrong impression. In fact, I’m flattered you wanted to help. But I’m fine, I really am!” She tries to give you a reassuring smile. “Look, how about this. If I do need help in the future, you’ll be one of the first people I call.”

“Thanks, I guess. I’ll see you later, senpai.”

“Once again, I’m really sorry! Thank you for the offer!”

You exit the room, Yoshino’s apologizes still bouncing around your ear. You sigh and shake your head. Wow, this sure was a big waste of time, wasn't it? What were you thinking? You might as well have spend the last thirty minutes banging your head against the wall.

Drama club would have already started and the mandatory afternoon duels in the Battleground are well underway. You cannot muster up the energy to go to either of them. Looks like you’ll be attending another session of the Go-Home club today.

You leave the academy and head down the road to the train station. On the way, you pass a small playground. It’s the usual city fare, with monkey bars, a plastic slide, a half-filled sandpit and one of those swingy animal thingies that gave you motion sickness as kid. Despite the somewhat run-down appearance, the playground is packed with children swinging around, climbing on top of the metal structures, chasing each other around the field and having a good, old time. They do so under the watchful eye of their parents, who are in various states of disinterest or fondness.

There is one exception. A blonde girl with wide eyes and a frilly dress. You do a double take when you realize who it is.

It’s Kozue. She’s sitting on a swing set, watching the cars roll past, alone.

it is not possible to null almighty

it may be possible to null the other types, but not with null nuclear

>>
>>45567160
I believe it's something of a tier system. You've got Fire, Ice, Wind, Lightning and Earth, which are really common to have defenses against. Then you have Light and Darkness, which are less common. Gravity, Psychic, and Nuclear are even rarer to be able to defend against. And then there's Almighty, for which there's only Resist Almighty, no way to negate the damage completely, and even Resist is super ultra rare.
>>
>>45567253
Well there's also the fact that Almighty attacks are usually stronger and only ever multi target.

It’s been a while since you last met her. The best thing to do in order to prevent your afternoon from being a complete waste would be to greet her, you think.

“Hey.” You try to keep your movement casual and stride up to her. Your footsteps crunch against the hard ground. Kozue notices and looks up, blinking at your uniformed body. “What’s up?”

She stares at you, before turning away. “You’re mean, Mister Takashi.”

“Eh?” You cry. “I haven’t even done anything!”

“Yes, you have.” Kozue insists. Strangely, she isn’t pouting. “You haven’t come to play with me.”

“Could you not say stuff that would give the people around you the wrong impression?”

“Meanie Mister Takashi.” Kozue says, pointing an accusing finger at you. There isn’t a single inflection or change in tone in her soft, flat voice. “Big bad guy. You like putting underwear on your head.”

“What kind of insult is that?” You exclaim. “Look, I’m sorry Kozue. I was busy with grown-up stuff.”

“Playing with me is more important.” She retaliates.

“I would’ve died if I didn’t do the stuff I needed to do. Kind of!” This isn’t a lie, but Kozue won’t know. Hopefully she’ll still believe it. Being judged by a little girl for your skins is somehow heart-rendering, you realize. Is this what kaa-san had to endure when Shizuka was young?

Kozue appears to consider this. After your soul is analyzed from every angle under her piercing gaze, she speaks again.

“I want candy.”

“Pardon?” You say.
>>
“Ah, fine. Don’t tell your parents about this.”

You spot a vending machine in the corner of the playground and walk over to it. Kozue follows. She’s pale and thin, so maybe the sugar will bring back some color into her cheeks. You select a cheap chocolate bar, one with mint filling and nuts in the surrounding chocolate, and insert the required Macca.

“Takashi-kun, what are you doing?”

A familiar feminine voice prevents you from inserting the last coin. You swivel your head around and your jaw drops.

“Oh hell, I thought he was joking about that…”

Why are Celeste and Akikazu here? What's with the confused and condescending looks they're giving you?

“I’m helping out a friend here. What does it look like?” You reply, cool as the ice from the feathered wings of Moh Shuuvu. “This is Kozue Yusa, the girl I told you about.”

“Oh, okay, then.” Then realization dawns on her like a slowly approaching tidal wave made out of sticky honey. “Hey, wait a minute!”

“Oy, something is off here…” Akikazu says and you can see the effort he’s putting into in order not to swear in front of the innocent elementary school girl. This gives you warm and fuzzing feelings deep down, for some reason. “How did the hel—heck, did the two of you meet?”

“I found her wandering around the city one night and decided to talk to her. Things started from there.” You grin. “It is a completely platonic, ordinary friendship between the two of us and of course my good friends wouldn’t dare to imply otherwise, right?”

“Uh-huh, if you say so…” Celeste crouches down and smiles at the girl. “She’s cute, though. What school do you go to, Kozue-chan?”

Kozue doesn’t say anything at first.

“Is she mute, too?” Akikazu asks.

“Nah.” You say. “Hey, Kozue, this is Celeste and Akikazu. They go the same academy as me. Say hi!”

Then you notice Kozue has relocated from beside you to behind you, hugging your leg.

“Monster.” She whispers, pointing to Akikazu, then to Celeste. “Evil princess.”

Celeste gasps. Akikazu looks as if he was slapped in the face with a cast-iron frying pan.

“Ehh…I think Celeste is a normal princess.” You wink at the two of them. “Akikazu is definitely a monster, though.”

“Excuse me?”

“Wait, what?” Akikazu shouts.

“Really?” Kozue asks.

“Yeah! Take a closer look at them.”

She does.

“Uh…yeah, of course I am!” Celeste’s features arrange themselves into a playful smirk. She walks over to your side and ruffles Kozue’s blonde hair. “I am Celeste Tachibana, the Flame Princess from the Kingdom of the Stars! Quick, we must make haste before the monster cooks us all up and serves us to his wife!”

“Why am I the monster?” Akikazu yells, glaring at Celeste. “You’re the one who goes around setting things on fire!”

“I look cute.” Celeste sticks his tongue out at him. “You, on the other hand, look like a hedgehog coated itself in melted cheese and made a nest on your head.”

“Why you…” Numerous veins bulge crimson on Akikazu’s forehead. “I’ll have you know that this hair is all natural!”

“Oh no!” You say in a hushed voice. “He’s turning red. This mean he’s about to become super strong!”

"Quick, little one!" Celeste calls to Kozue. "Any longer and he might explode!"

“Fine! If I’m going to be the monster, then I’m damn well going to play the part!” Akikazu bellows like a wounded gorilla and slams his foot on the ground, shaking the nearby monkey bars.

“Run!” You scream, grabbing Kozue’s hand and making a break for the other end of the playground. Celeste follows, laughing her head off.

You, Celeste and Kozue spend the next minute running away from a furious Akikazu, much to the amusement of the other children in the playground. He puffs and huffs like the a steam train on steroids, but cannot catch up. This will teach him not to do speed training.

On the third lap, Celeste makes a wrong step and trips into the sandbox. The sand flows down her hair and into her vest. That isn’t the problem though. Akikazu leaps in the air and lands down right beside her. A nasty, mirthful grin is plastered on his face.

“Noo!” Celeste puts on a convincing impression of a frail princess about to be led to a dragon’s den. Either that, or a banshee who forgot to take her throat pills the morning after. “This can’t be happening. I’m too young to die!”

This is really bad. Really, truly, honestly, despairingly, horridly bad! If the Flame Princess dies, who will foster the alliance with the Forest of the Fae? If the Fae are unwilling to help, who will fight back the kingdom from the evil black slime monsters from the dark side of the moon? The common men have been scattered to the wilds, the soldiers have fled in cowardice and the magical girl queen is nowhere to be found. There’s only one person who can save the kingdom now…

“Hero Kozue, order your faithful servant to rescue the princess, please!” You, the standard fantasy light novel protagonist, plead.

Kozue Yusa, a young prodigy mage from a noble family and most certainly not a little girl from all the way in the future, looks at you. “Will she give me candy?”

You glance over at the Flame Princess. In between wriggling around in the sandpit and performing drama, she smiles and gives you a nod.

“Yes!” You affirm.

“Then go, servant.” Kozue makes a sweeping motion with her arm and proclaims the order. If this was a movie, loud orchestral music would have played in the background. The effect is lost, however, as Kozue’s voice is still near emotionless as ever.

“As you wish!”

You brandish your totally-not-imaginary katana and charge across the battlefield, shouting war cries at the huge orc with mysteriously blonde and clean hair. He sees your approach and howls in turn. The two of you rush towards each other, screaming with all your passion and power. Tales will be written about this fateful day. Bards will sing songs of your deeds in royal courts, boring noblewomen to tears.
>>
>>45569440
God damn it, Thorn, I love your narration.
>>
You land a single, light hit on Akikazu’s chest. He stumbles back a little. Then Celeste jabs him in the ankles, knocking him flat on his back. He lands in the sandpit.

“Victory is mine!” You proclaim.

“Humanity wins!” Celeste shouts, standing up and shaking all the sand out of her clothes. “All thank to the hero Kozue Yusa! Hip hip hooray!”

You and your best friend do a little impromptu celebration. This causes a few parents to mutter something about today’s youths under their breaths, before carefully guiding their kids away from the playground.

Down in the sandpit, Akikazu picks himself up and groans.

“I still don’t get the point of all this.” He grumbles.

“Frankly, I don’t think you’re supposed to.” You reply, giving him a hand up.

“Miss Celeste, can I have my candy now?” An approaching Kozue says.

“Yes! Here, have these licorice cubes…”

The sun is beginning to set. Playtime is over. You sit with your friends and Kozue on the edge of the playground. The place is almost empty.

“Will you really be okay on your own?” You ask. Kozue nods.

“Are you sure?” Celeste says. “We don’t mind sticking around for a bit longer. The city is dangerous at night.”

“I’ll be fine.” Kozue says, standing up and walking along the bench. “Mister Takashi, will you come and play with me again?”

You smile at her. “Of course.”

“Miss Celeste, Monster?"

“Yeah! If we’re in the area, we will.”

“I'm still the monster?” Akikazu growls, but you can tell he had fun today. Evidence of this includes him pushing Kozue down the slide once make-believe time was over.

“Then bye-bye!” Kozue hops off the bench. “See you later!”

“Hey, wait!” You call out. “Shouldn’t you wait for your parents?”

It is too late. Kozue has already disappeared into the vast, urban jungle that is Akumachi City. You, Celeste and Akikazu search around the area for her, but nothing turns up. Shrugging and contemplating whether or not to call the police, you and Celeste bid Akikazu goodbye and make way for the train station.

Another afternoon in the Imperial Empire of Japan thus passes by…

The dorm room is dark, with only a single ray of sunlight poking through the shutters. The bunk beds are empty, save for a single girl sitting cross-legged on the bottom mattress. Aria von Wittelsbach wrestles with her stylus, scraping it across the canvas of the image manipulation tool displayed on her tablet. Mustering energy from her near limitless imagination, she draws line after line on the screen, before pausing to rub the offending parts out and doing it all over again. She reaches for the paintbrush and dabs the white space with color. Reds, greens, blues and greys scatter across the painting like raindrops descending from the heavens.

An idea strikes her. She rubs out the past color and puts in the new. There. That looks so much better.

She only takes a break when stinging tears build up in the corner of her eyes. She rests the stylus down on the bedsheets, her wrist aching.

She opens the small fridge in the room and takes out an instant meal of meat and potatoes. This is her dinner. It’s a far cry from the dishes in her homeland, but with a limited budget she cannot complain.

“It's half done…” she whispers as she presses the button on the sink that opens up the rush of boiling water.

She follows the instructions and leaves the meal on the table to absorb the water and cook. She rests herself on the bed again and cradles her tablet to her chest.

“Wonder…what will he say?” She smiles, appreciating her work. It is soon lost in a churning ocean of doubts and fears.

“But…will it work? I don't know...”

Aria wishes to hope that it will, she truly does.

Yet part of her, blackened and spiteful, whispers that she should not even bother.

She shakes her head, clearing away the dark fog. Things are different this time around. The winds of fate are blowing in her way. As if to prove her point, she picks up her stylus and begins drawing again, this time with even greater fervour.

The room is soon filled with the humming of an excited, young girl...

The Japanese islands do play host to birds of prey, but I would think that they aren't commonly found in the sprawling steel metropolis of the main city, which is what I'm assuming is where we are now given the Academy City-esque images that Thorn is using. Finding our taloned buddy in AETHER seems like the most likely place to acquire an animal companion, unless the city has some kind of zoo or wildlife conservatory/reserve.

With that said, I am 100% down for venturing out into the shadow-infested wilderness beyond the city walls in search for our animal companion.
