You are Vanquish, the masked hero of the night who protects part of Arcadia, a city of the future.

LAST TIME:

We fought a mysterious man called Knightmare, made a friend in the bumbling hero Hurricane Vanguard, and got accepted to be interviewed by the Peacekeeper's Union.

Now, let's henshin a-go-go baby!

---

The sun breaks through your window, illuminating your messily kempt room. Your eyes flutter awake, the blue numbers on your alarm clock greeting you.

7:59.

One whole minute before the alarm was supposed to go off.

Huh, you must really be prepared for this interview--

>BZZZZZZTTTT! BZZZZ--

You slam down the snooze button. Right, alarm clock.

You get dressed, stuff some Minute Rice in the microwave, and turn on the television to check the local news. All seems relatively sound this lovely morning, June 22nd, 21XX.

Newscasters report that Paragon Supreme, leader and founder of the Peacekeeper's Union, will be heading abroad on a trans-continental trip to make the Union a global effort, starting in Europe. Pretty cool stuff, you think.

>What to do until our interview at 2?

>Change the channel, catch a good show.
>Practice our interview, don't want to mess it up.
>Dick around on the internet.
>Write-in.

>Practice our interview, don't want to mess it up.
Should also fix up our gloves.
>>
>>45569420
fuck you bruv we aint no pedo

You move over to your duffel bag, retrieving the cut gloves. Just running your thumb over the gash brings back the memory--the sheer rush of your will made manifest striking against him and making an even match.

Most of the people you catch and apprehend aren't quite on your level. Even the so-called 'superpowered' ones don't have much to do against your will's strength.

That Knightmare guy? You haven't seen shit like him before. Normally, he...

He's the people Peacekeeper's Union fights.

Damn, you really might be cut out for this.

You grab some kevlar tucked away under the floorboards and shoddily sew it into the gashes. You were never one for fixing your own costume, but it'll have to do. A quick dab of paint across the replaced material, and it almost looks like half of a hack job and not a full one.

>cont.
>>
>>45569567
Sitting up against the wall, putting your helmet on to simulate the real thing, you begin.

"I...I'm Vanquish! I want to join Peacekeeper's so my reign of justice is not impeded while the wicked get away!"

"Well," you say, raising your voice into a supposed interviewer, "we have plenty of those. Why are YOU important?"

"My power is quite literally limitless! The only thing holding it back is my emotion, my drive, the sheer force of will that makes me keep moving forward! In time, I could surpass Para--"

No, that was too cocky.

You take the helmet off and toss it aside. Maybe it would be good to do things more...on the fly. Planning isn't in the nature of a hot-blooded woman like yourself.

>What now?
>Get some exercise and warm up.
>You've done enough. Veg out like the shit you are.
>Audience: Ask for Exposition about something...?
>Write-in.

You get up and spread out your clothes to the corners of the room, getting the effort in you to even throw some of it in the hamper!

Some, don't think too highly of yourself.

You stretch out your legs, doing a few squats to proceed.

You also grab your nearby dumbbells, lifting in a steady one-two motion. You puff air out of the side of your mouth in time with the reps to make sure you're exerting yourself correctly.

Continuing your routine, you drop to the ground and press two fingers to the ground and press yourself upwards. Admittedly, you thought this was just something that only happening in Naruto, but as you began your journey to get physically fit and become a glorious hero, you actually managed to get enough strength in your hand to lift your entire body!

Neat, huh?

Hours pass, and it's roughly 12:30. You should probably head to the interview now.

Donning your heroic garb and becoming Vanquish--in the daytime--you run down to the streets and head towards your interview. Time winds down, and it's 1 o' clock by the time you finally make it just outside the HQ, but--

"Helpppppp! T-This monster's got meeee!"

You whip your head around, seeing a mud-like creature with sprouting tendrils, a blonde woman with glasses tight in it's grasp.

"Shit." You mutter, as you realize what this means.

If you save this woman, you will be assuredly late for your interview--and may blow your one shot. But this is a chance to be a hero, and it would be hypocritical to leave her to die just to become 'official!'

What do we do?

>Fight the monster! Interview be damned!
>The interview is more important. Someone else can save her.

You throw your fist upwards! You cannot let this injustice stand, no matter what you could gain if you did!

"Foul creature! Feel the divine power of my fists made incarnate! For I am Vanquish, defender of the innocent, and archnemesis to the wicked!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9wVg_CumKE

You run at the beast, charging your fists behind you and then throwing a pummeling flurry of fists. The muddy substance pushes in as you strike, but it quickly slides back to where it once was.

"...This is going to require a lot more justice than I thought."

You leap back, just as one of the tentacles slam down where you once stood. Glancing up at the mud-beast, there appears to be some sort of mechanical core to it all, a gray sphere with a reddish eye gazing down at you.

Well, now you figure what to hit. Also, it looks like that one guy from--

Anyways!

>Pummel it harder until the core is exposed!
>Channel all my will into one blow!

You bend your knees, pressing a hand to the ground. With hot air coming in through your nose, you breathe in, exhale, and leap.

A tentacle whips at you, but a quick kick bats it away. Another writhes just out of reach of you. You ignore the rest, all that matters is saving this woman. You land alongside the tentacle holding her captive and through your fist skywards.

"SPLIT THE ATOM!" You cry out, throwing your palm down sideways in a karate-chop motion, slicing the tentacle like a hot knife through butter.

As the woman begins to fall, you jump after her, catching her on the way down and landing safely on your feet. Well...not that safely.

It hurts like a mothefucker. But hey, you'll live.

"Are you okay?" You ask her.

"O-Of course...thank you! So much..." Woah, uh, change in tone...?

"For coming for your interview!"

A quick beep-beep-beep resonates through the air, as the mud melts right off the woman's body. Confused, you whirl around, seeing the creature itself begin to melt and fade away in the same fashion, only it's robotic 'brain' remaining.

"I...wait, that was...?"

The woman nods, removing her glasses and replacing them with a domino mask. She puts her hand in yours a little forcefully and shakes.

"Lady Payne. Peacekeeper's. If you have it in you to do a few quick questions inside after all that, I say you're as good as in."

You pause for a moment.

"Why have I been rejected all those other times?"

Lady Payne pauses, taking her jacket off and inverting it, becoming the more recognizable pink and purple associated with her.

"Ahem. We don't ALWAYS accept nobodies. But your efforts against that man with the blade..."

Knightmare.

"Well, he's been a repeated threat to our organization. Your application was quite timely, let's just say."

"So I was too lame to join before? What about give me your poor, your huddled, your--"

"That's written on the Statue of Liberty, not the floormat here. Look, we have to have a set of standards. One bad apple spoils the bunch, and we lose all our sponsorship and accredation. Do you want to become a true hero, or do you want to play dress up in the streets like Mommy's favorite screwup on Halloween?"

Yeesh, hard as bone.

Granted, that's what you always liked about her. The fact she never took shit from anyone and easily rose to the top of recognized heroes around.

"Do you do this for everyone? What if someone walked by and got hurt by that thing?"

"No one is in any real danger. It's remotely controlled by Cogmaster in the basement. Now, are you going to play nice and so some paperwork?"

"He was gone." She finishes.

"Time number five?"

Payne smiles. "You showed up. I was quite impressed. Paragon Supreme himself was quite taken with the way you literally tried to headbutt him, and then, how you played off how much it hu--"

"T-That's enough, miss!"

God, you now realize talking to these older heroes might get embarrassing.

The two of you walk inside for your forms.

>cont.
>>
>>45571994
You walk in, as the place quite literally seems to grow and become bigger on the inside than it appears walking in.

Paintings adorn the walls. On each, you can see the five founding members of the Peacekeeper's Union. Paragon Supreme. Lady Payne. Cogmaster. Nighthowl. And...

Well, no, the fifth one is torn apart. The Union supposedly had a member who committed some crime so heinous, they had to be ex-communicated and scrubbed from the records. This was far before they ever formed the Union proper, making you wonder why the painting was made...

"A-he-hem."

The harsh-yet-calmingly authoritative voice of Lady Payne beckons you to her desk. A quick glance shows very little personality to it. A plaque reading 'Priscilla Payne' here, a Sunday Funnies comic-calendar, and an almost surgically neat pile of papers in and outgoing.

Something told you you should really be trying to emulate your idol more.

"Now, we already have your personal information on file, none of that is in dispute. However, we have a personality sectionaire, and within a week, a physical examination for your ranking."

"...Ranking?" you say, confused.

"What, you thought we're all created equal? Some heroes can never leave the slums, while the likes of Paragon Supreme are needed worldwide every day. Higher the rank, the higher your status and your dedication."

High dedication...that's right up your alley!

Something runs through your mind...should you answer honestly on the personality questions, or answer what you 'think' is best for getting a higher rank...?

>Honesty is a hero's best friend!
>It...couldn't hurt anyone just to bump our score a little.

>>45572226

No, no, how could you even THINK that, Yukari!? If a hero can't be honest, then you can't be a hero!

"Ready?" Payne says, glancing over a sheet written with bubble-answers, pencil in hand. "I'm going to answer you some theoretical questions, and I want you to answer honestly. Not because we'll know if you're lying, but because...well. Being misplaced in ranking is never a fun time."

Yeah, that isn't ominous.

"Question 1: Your mother, whom you love and has cared for you all your life is dangling off on edge of a collapsing bridge. Twenty other people, total strangers, are on the other. You only have time to save one side before the whole thing collapses. Who do you choose?"

(This is going to be a character-roleplaying based section. I ask for a little discussion amongst yourselves here, cause it's gonna influence how Yukari is written from now on to mold her into what we answer with here.)
>>
>>45572152
>Honesty is a hero's best friend!

We must tell the truth.
Also :
"Can we repass the test later, to try to upgrade our ranking ? Or are we stuck forever with the first ranking ?"
>>
>>45572331
I would vote for saving people before our mother, but since we're supposed to care for her, it's a tough one. If Yukari should let die her mothet, even if it's for saving everyine else, she would be remorsefull yo have let someone ahe cared and love die.

Or we can ask How high and big is this bridge : Maybe some can survive the fall.
>>
>>45572396
I mean, it's a question of utilitarianism and how much the self matters in your heroics.

I will say that no, there's no trick to the question. The side you don't save dies.

We save which ever one is closer to us. Assuming they're all equally close to us we go mom and then group under the reasoning that its quicker to save one person and then focus on saving a group than it is to save a group and then focus on the single person. The side with the group of people might cave in while we're saving them after all.
>>
>>45572331

How's the super scene worldwide? Is there a certain Superman head honcho archetype everyone looks up to?

How are we in terms of contacts?

I always liked it when heroes have support teams. Like Doc Savage and his crew. We need to find some people that can make us weapons and sick rides.

We also could use a secret base. Operating out of home could be dangerous.

Have we introduced ourselves to the police yet? It never hurts to have a Commissioner Gordon figure on our side.

You think long and hard. Despite the clear importance of saving a multitude of lives--your mind cannot help but find it correct to save your mother whom you actually know.

"I'll save my mother."

Payne raises an eyebrow. Something tells you that was unexpected.

"I...just prefer intimacy over the many."

That doesn't stop her look any.

"Well. Question 2: you met a dashing man or woman and hit it off, dating for quite some time. However, when you're fighting your archnemesis, their mask breaks and you discover the face of your lover. Are your morals compromised? By loving a villain, are you supporting them?

Can you trust them ever again, or do you call it off immediately? Keep in mind: NEITHER of you revealed their identities to the other."
>>
>>45573830
We have no one other than Hurricane, essentially. However, if this interview goes well enough, our web should increase with other heroes our rank.

The police are certainly familiar with vigilante-level heroes, but they're typically lone wolves and therefore you haven't been approached, and haven't approached them yet yourself. Doesn't mean we can't.

>Do you want to continue a romantic relationship with a known criminal?

Justice and love are both blind. But only one is ever fair.

"Kid, you can stop, you passed the final question."

She's smiling, taking out a slip from one of the drawers in her desk and writing a big fat 'N' on it with a checkmark beside it.

"You'll be submitted into the physical exams next week. I advise that you don't do anything that would break, melt, sever, eviscerate, liquefy, or otherwise prevent you from using any part of your body."

"Wait wha--"

"Now, out out out!" A faint glow emanates from behind her mask, and you find yourself lifted and gently tossed out the door of the Peacekeeper's Union. Flat on your ass, no less.

You grumble and rub your sore derriere, and contemplate if it would be worth it not getting in if you could score with her. Or, maybe you'd please her so much she'd ignore--

"Hello, fellow hero! I see your interview went well!"

"So, will you be needing a fitness partner in the week prior to your exam? I think you'll find my routine ideal for staying in top physical form! 10 percent spirit, 10 percent will, 80 percent back-breaking exercise!"

"...What are YOU doing here? You didn't have an interview with the Peacekeeper's, did you?"

You audibly hear Hurricane open his mouth to speak, putting a finger up--and stopping. "Classified business, Vanquish. What you should know is I have been on a top-secret-mission assigned to me by someone you couldn't even imagine!"

He's right; you couldn't imagine someone important assigning a task to this guy; someone who couldn't beat a wet paper bag in a knife fight if he brought a gun.

"Routine? Oh, well! I lift 10 pound weights for ten minutes, then 20 pound weights for 20 minutes, and then 30 pound weights for 30 minutes! I call it, the Hour of Power! Then, on my off days, I have a run around the city, trying to lose 5 minutes off my time each month!"

You blink in bewilderment. His routine didn't sound like the most absurd thing--to the contrary, there was a logic to it--the confusing thing was the running.

"You run...all of Arcadia?" you finally ask.

"Oh! Did I forget to mention, I, ah...why don't I just show you!" He glances behind you and points to a coffee shop roughly a mile down the way.

"See that?"

"Yeah, wh--"

Before you even finish your syllable, Hurricane has vanished. Befuddled, you look to the left. No Hurricane. The right...no Hurricane.

"Over here!" you hear a distant shouting.

Waving you down from a mile away with coffee in hand is Hurricane.

"Super speed, huh..." you comment to yourself. Interesting.

Hurricane runs and appears beside you in a blur, his cup discarded already.

"So, what do you say? Will you be my partner?"

"Alright...let's do it! You can be my partner, Hurricane!"

"Marvelous!" He gives a quick salute and rears up, zooming down the street at ludicrous speed.

"...oh goddamit."

You run after Hurricane, your grumbling stomach now starting to kick you in the ass for only eating rice this morning.

--

Once Hurricane finally understood the concept of staying around your speed, things got less hectic. Hell, you were breaking such a good sweat, you could've drowned in your mask.

On the outskirts of the city, Hurricane holds you up.

"...something I have to do. Please excuse me." With that, your eye vaguely traces a lime-speedline to where you presume he went.

Follow him?

>Yes.
>No.
>Ask him about it when he comes back.

Luckily, there's a nearby sandwich shop beside you. You fish in your pocket for your wallet and grab a twenty, hoping it will sustain your MIGHTY NEED for SUSTENANCE.

Walking inside, the place is relatively empty, so it's a bizarre sight for the few patrons to see a local hero step in in full costume. You try to ignore the stares as you make your way to the counter.

"A, uh, 12 inch sub, please. Hold the mayo. And tomatoes. Extra cheese." You try and remain composed and stoic during that. But god, if you didn't fucking hate mayo.

No, like, seriously.

Fuck mayo.

The clerk behind the counter nods awkwardly and takes your twenty, handing you some pennies in change. As you wait for your sandwich, you glance outside, seeing the same indicative speedline of Hurricane run into a botanical shop across the street, and then back the way he came.

The plot thickens.

As you grab your sandwich and sit down to eat, you realize that would require taking off your mask. In front of other people. Thus revealing your identity.

In a stroke of genius, you take your sandwich subtly into the ladies' bathroom, lock yourself in, and begin stuffing your face in solitude.

Bliss.

Taking bites, you wonder about Hurricane's weird behavior.

First, he insists that's been around after a bout of temporary retirement. Then, all of his technology is either out of date, or he hardly knows how to use it. And now, all of this weirdness where he has to go somewhere in the middle of the day...with flowers, no less.

Flowers are usually some sign of intimacy. It could be he forgot something for his girlfriend...maybe someone he knows and loves is undergoing chemo?

What else could it be...?

As you finish your sub in record time (and hopefully don't regret how fast you ate the damn thing), you walk out of the bathroom after washing up. Taking a seat inside, you wait for Hurricane a while longer.

One of the patrons in a booth right next to you glances your way, piping up.

"...You're with that Vanguard boy, right?"

You turn around, a little bewildered. "Why, yes. How did you--"

"Saw you both outside a while ago." He reaches out his hand. "Sam. Sam Whittaker."

You firmly shake his hand, wanting to make a good impression.

"That boy's an oddity around here. He used to be the shining example of how you were a damn hero...then one day, out of the blue, he disappears. Even weirder is when he came back. Nobody else seemed t' notice, but...he got shorter. A lot more awkward now. And he always, always on the dot, goes t' parts unknown when the clock hits about 4 PM."

"Huh..."

>>45579728

"What else do you know about him then?"

Sam takes a sniff of the air that sounds phlegmy. Cold, you presume.

"He wasn't always able to run as fast as he is. That came after his disappearance. And now, he just seems to latch onto whatever hero he can to be alongside, rather than inspire, if ya get me. Poor kid..."

"Before the disappearance...he still seemed young, right?"

"Yeah. His voice was th' same and all, but now there's just something funny about him. I don't think he's dangerous, I'm just sayin' to watch him, make sure he's alright."

Right on cue, Hurricane enters the area, empty handed and looking around. For you, probably.

"Go on. Talk to im'. Just...watch the ice you're walkin' when it comes to what we were just discussing." Sam warns, taking a long sip from his soda.

"Of course. Thank you, sir." You bow quickly and walk out to greet Hurricane.

"Ah! Vanquish! So glad to see you!" Hurricane puts his hands on his hips and stands upright. "I apologize my business took so long. I forgot something and had to make two trips! But now we can continue with your training."

"Of course, Hurricane. Let's train some more."

"Great! Now I wanted you to have a quick taste of my regiment! The Hour of Power itself! Follow me, dear Vanquish!" With that, Hurricane rushes off, leaving his light trail to chase after.

Sunuvabitch.

You run after his trail.

---

Finally meeting Hurricane standing on an isolated rooftop, you see a purple, soft-materialed set of weights.

"I thought you'd be more of a lime, considering..."

Hurricane tilts his head, not understanding.

"Nevermind."

"Go through my regiment! Then...a Hurricane surprise!"

"Hurricane surprise...? Is it like, a homemade pie?"

"What it IS is a surprise! So please, just do the 30-30, 20-20, and 10-10. In any order."

You sigh and pick up the weights.

>cont.

"...25!...26!...27!...28!...29!...30!!!"

You drop the weights and flap your arms, breathing heavily and sitting criss-cross to rest.

Your whole body literally aches, and you know for a damn fact that Hurricane isn't as muscular as you. How the hell he does it is a complete mystery.

"Wonderful!" He gives you a dynamic thumbs up. "Now, for the Hurricane surprise!"

You wait for it.

"...um, no, please stand for this." He says.

You suddenly don't have as good of a feeling about this as before.

You get up, as per his request.

"Great! Now..."

He puts on a fighting stance.

"Battle me, Vanquish! Let's see who the real hero of Arcadia's downtrodden is!"

"A hero should be prepared for anything!"

"LIKE YOU WERE PREPARED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME!?"

"Ha, I can't hear you over the sounds of my superior heroism!"

This kid was getting on your nerves even harder.

He runs around you, a green blur circling around you and then closing in on you. You breathe in deeply, and throw your first in a circular spin around you.

Immediately, Hurricane is decked in the face, as he didn't anticipate you even being able to lift your arms.

...He's not wrong, it hurt like a bitch to even raise them, let alone punch him.

There's a crack in his visor, and you can see a single brown eye behind it, shaking slightly as he realizes he's in over his head.

"A-A mighty swing indeed! Let's see how you can handle...THIS!"

Hurricane gets to his feet and breathes in, swirling his hands in figure-eight motions as wind channels around his fists. He reels both fists back and sends them surging forward, two massive funnel clouds emerging from his knuckles.

"EYE OF THE STORM!" he cries out.

That's the trouble with making your attack names a little too obvious.

This is why you always make your attack names WAY too cool to actually be indicative of what they do.

When the funnels come for you, you take a step back and make a running leap, dive-kicking through the literal eye of one of the tornadoes and nailing Hurricane in the chest. Once you land on your feet, you throw a flurry of punches at his armor.

As you strike, you notice tape splitting, and paint starting to chip. Upon closer inspection, his costume really is falling apart at the seams.

"Rrrrah!" He yells back in defiance, his voice distorter starting to crackle into static partway through.

Hurricane punches you straight across the jaw, and then again, and again, and again. He sweeps your leg and alternates between punches and kicks, into one devastating combo of relentless strikes.

"CATEGORY FIVE!" he yells as it climaxes, kicking and sending you skidding across the roof.

"Had enough yet? Ready to give up that nomination to me?" He asks weakly, panting.

"That's what this is about!? You're JEALOUS?" you say.

"This runs deeper than jealousy! This is about who rightfully deserves that title to protect more people!"

You pant as you get up, the aching in your muscles starting to get to you. This fight has to end--and fast.

"I'm done here. I'm not going to indulge you being a child."

"I-I am not a child! This is more than just titles and nominations! I'm trying to protect people! You are my genuine friend as a hero, and yet--"

"Yet your 'competition' for who 'deserves it' involves fighting me while I'm handicapped? There's a lot of suspicious shit about you, Hurricane, and this caps it. We could've been partners--but I think I prefer the company of honest people."

"I...I am honest! M-Masahiro said that was...my best feature..."

You stare hard at him through your visor and turn to walk away.

"Stop! Please! I...I can't be seen like a failure..."

You hear something drop to the ground and roll towards you.

There's a girl's voice.

"P-Please...forgive me for my arrogance..."

You turn around, seeing what must be the real Hurricane Vanguard.

A girl who doesn't look like she could be out of high school, on her knees and sobbing.

"I-I have sullied our sacred bonds as heroes! I'm no better than the villains we face in combat! Nay, I'm worse!" She says, through sobs.

"What do you mean there was a 'first' Hurricane?"

She gives a bit of a pathetic sniffle. You hand her some napkins, which Makoto promptly dabs at her eyes with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB6ttzPajHE

"My brother, Masahiro...h-he was the first Hurricane. He was a great hero, with a suit he built all by himself to help him fight evil. H-He really was my hero. I was the only person he ever told his identity..."

She swallows hard and her eyes begin to water again.

"One night, he didn't come home from his patrols when he usually did...I got so worried I waited on the f-front porch for him...and I saw him stumbling towards me with a sword in his stomach!"

You cup your hand over the mouth of your mask in horror.

"H-He was covered in blood...God, there was so much blood. H-He could only whisper to me t-that I shouldn't let the justice of Hurricane Vanguard die with him. N-Nothing on who or what killed him."

You wait a moment for her to collect herself.

"...so that's why the suit is so damaged. You couldn't repair it to what it was before his death."

She tearfully nods.

"And why you're so much shorter in the suit. But, there's one more question on my mind. Why do you have super-speed?"

"I...he was working on an addition to the suit. Masahiro. On my first ever mission, I found in the lair of some muggers blueprints similar to what he had half-finished, and I worked from those. Why they had them, I never found out."

"...I'm sorry to hear that Makoto. I...I just wish I knew."

She swallows again., blinking tears into her coffee.

"...do the Peacekeeper's have to do with it too?"

She nods softly. "He...he always wanted to protect more people. I thought that if I joined, it would be a way of protecting his legacy as a hero...but...!!" She starts sobbing again, burying her face in her palms.

She glances down at the counter shamefully.

"He wouldn't think that was very heroic at all..."

"Right. So don't just honor his legacy. Honor yourself. Become the hero he thought you could be."

Makoto looks up at that, smiling softly, her eyes starting to glisten again.

You wave off Makoto, taking the tatters of her suit from her outside. She waves you off with a toothy grin.

As you make the lengthy walk back to the Union HQ, you notice just how low the sun is dipping beneath the sky. It's becoming apparent that you're not going to make it in time for closing--hell, you're not even sure that Cogmaster was there today.

Oh, geez, if you keep her suit in your apartment, your landlord might find it, and you'll get kicked out. What're we--

You bump suddenly into a tall figure (like pic related on your way down the street. You pause, taking a full second to glance all the way up and drink in his mechanical features.

"...C-Cogmaster, sir?"

"Reply: That is my name. Humorous suffix: Don't wear it out."

"Um, hello! I am Vanquish, a hero freshly about to take her exams! I have a friend who needs his suit repaired, and--"

"Reply: I do not work for just anyone. I am busy. Apology: Sorry about that."

"No, no, sir, you don't understand! This is a request from Hurricane Vanguard himself!"

Cogmaster's gears stop turning briefly inside of him. An ugly clicking like a wind-up toy being wound the wrong way sounds as his head turns towards you.

"Exclamation: Oh my! Question: Why didn't you just say so? I will have it done within eight-hundred-hours."

"...that long?"

"Correction: Military time."

"Ohhhhhh. Thank you so much, kind sir!"

You hand the suit of to him, and Cogmaster opens a cavity in his chest to dispense Makoto's clothes in.

"Statement: I am glad Hurricane Vanguard recovered. Condolences: It was unfortunate hearing what happened to him."

"...what was that?"

"Query: What was what? Statement: I must be leaving. Take care of yourself, Vanquish."

With that, Cogmaster moves down the street at a brisk pace to wherever the 24/7 base of operations for the Peacekeeper's is.

Arcadia is the name of the city, and I intentionally leave it unspecified where the country of origin is. It's just coincidence that the chosen name for Vanquish is Japanese sounding along with Makoto, who was a character conceived prior to the Vanquish's creation.

Also, the high prices are due to heavier taxation to pay out Peacekeeper's Union for being essentially the greatest public works project Arcadia, and most of the world, has seen.

The heroes DO take home a prettier penny than non-super citizens, and that is a source of tension. We just haven't had a chance to examine that yet.

With the bizarreness of your encounter with Cogmaster out of the way, you walk the roads near your apartment for any instances of crime. Yet the streets are quiet.

Your only companion as you walk is footsteps. The light fades from your sight the further you step into alleyways. Soon, everything around you simply becomes the dull reflections of muddy rainwater, and the light shining off them.

However, something catches your eye across the street.

A youthful looking man presses the barrel of a revolver into the forehead of a hapless older man. The younger man's face has a look of resigned boredom, as he clicks his tongue while observing the fear on his victim's expression.

"Honestly, I thought I told you. My men and I have a specific time and date we have to be paid for protection. Does Baron Styx need to put two silver reminders between your eyes?"

"P-Please, I swear that I was robbed! A mugger--"

"Oh, a mugger, was it?" The man smacks his cane against the pavement loudly. "Funny, that seems to imply a mugger made it past my men's guard. Are you calling them lazy? Layabouts? Fools?"

"N-No!" The man protests, backing himself against the wall, his face wild with fear for his life.

"I think that my men deserve an apology for that slight. And the best apology I can think of is your brains making a canvas of the--"

"Why don't you pick a fight with someone as strong as you?" You shout out across the street, making a fist in your hand. "Or is there no one else as weak as you in this city?"

Baron Styx casts a sideways glance, one of his bangs falling over his other eye as he does.

"Oh, bloody hell. I'd be mildly proud of myself if it was a big leaguer. But...oh, luv, what's your silly little name? Tell me and the nice old man."

"Vanquish! Champion--"

"Vanquish Champion. Her name. Is Vanquish Champion. Hoo-fucking-wee! That's hilarious! I said it's hilarious, Charles, laugh or I'll put a bullet in yer' cunt of a wife too."

The older man laughs completely out of fear, his eyes darting from you to the Baron.

"Let's the two of us settle this! Leave the old man out!"

"Better idea: how about I take him as a hostage, make my getaway, and if you follow me, I kill him? Hm? That sound about good to you, luv?" he snarls a bit and spits on the pavement in your direction.

Baron Styx moves behind Charles, pressing his revolver to the back of his head. "Come on, luv. Make ya move and make it count, or else the paramedics are gonna be countin' the old man's brain cells he's got left. When they find his corpse."

"After I shoot his arse."

>Hold off. We can't risk him harming the old man.
>Play it subtle until he makes a mistake.
>Taunt him into fighting us hand to hand.
>Write-in.

"No need to be hasty here."

"No need to be very patient either, luv."

"Baron Styx, was it? What is it, this man didn't pay you enough? I can pay for him this month. No strings attached."

Baron tsk-tsks.

"If I let exceptions slip by, what's that sound about m' policies? All it takes is one broken condom to knock up the whore, luv."

That's the first time you've heard that analogy.

"But to kill him? Not even break his legs?"

Charles is looking at you completely horrified you'd even give him the idea.

"Bah, no. That's what those pansies at the Railway do. Styx doesn't take prisoners and he doesn't leave cripples. He leaves corpses."

"And you won't make the biggest statement of all?"

Styx looks back after taking a drag on his cigarette, his eyes lighting up.

"What's that then...?"

"If you killed a hero trying to save someone who double-crossed you, you'd look doubly as impressive, you know. Any hero, big name or small name."

He flashy a wicked grin, as you notice his teeth are filed down to be sharper.

"Sounds mighty tasty, luv. You gonna mind if I take you up on that offer?"

Styx shoves Charles out of the way and into the brick wall, he scrambles and runs into the dark. The vagabond takes his cane and walks with it into the middle of the street.

"Come on then, you cheeky bitch! Show me what good a hero can do!"

CHAPTER 2: END
