Stage 112: Deep Water, Shallow Water, Life Water.

Sound underwater travels incredibly far. Stealth underwater is a haphazard and delicate thing. Camouflage and stillness are far more effective than the most streamlined shape can be. Even a dragon cannot move through the water silently without magic to suppress the noise. Despite that, the sound of movement isn't necessarily an indicator of speed in the ocean. There is too much turbulence for that to be the case.

So the fact that you're hearing the sliding sound of hundreds of thousands of tiny fins shredding the water around them as they move towards you from several hundred yards away is an indicator of both size and speed, as well as the surfaces of what's moving towards you.

The movement has undoubtedly been prompted by the scent of blood in the ocean around you, Ginka, and four or five other Ama divers. You noticed because you are breathing the thick, copper taint of the water. Ginka didn't know until you tricked her into tasting the water, as she apparently simply holds her breath forever. The Ama divers haven't a clue, unfortunately, and that is going to be problematic. The other reason they haven't noticed is because it's not real blood.

That means that Ryuu Oh, the Water oni-child twin of the Fire oni-child Ah, is here and not too far off. She's clever, like you are, and dangerous, like you are, but the dangerous part is not innate to her nature; that's all experience and skill. No, she's Clever and Tricky, an illusionist and mischief maker oni-child, which makes her incredibly dangerous. Not that you are any less dangerous, but your skills and abilities are far more straightforward – and you've gained plenty of experience.

Just not this kind.

[] A weapon might be wise – Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume is with you!
[] This may be the chance to free – and use – the Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki from its prison.
[] Wait and see what is coming for you first – sounds like a shark though! But it can't be....?
[] Get the divers to safety – ritual must wait, these people are your father's people!
[] Ginaka's the one in danger here, not you – unless you can make yourself the danger first!

Reminders, dudes:

If we get Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki out, and don't kill our opponent, she's going to be pissed.

If we use Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume, we're going to release its poison all around us in the water, and that's a pretty bad thing.

On the other hand, we could use the sword the Mermaids gave us. It's probably ideal to do stuff underwater with, since it has been used to kill Water beings and protect the coasts for centuries.
>>
>>45636998
>The answer is no, because they are only human, where the Kaga goons were trained in magic. Natural things can't enter a barrier - though Ryukusa is fairly certain what is approaching is not natural.
>>

It's in Nowhere~

I suppose it wasn't an option since it's not one of our go-to-weapons.

I'll support using the Mermaid sword instead then.
>>

>[] Wait and see what is coming for you first – sounds like a shark though! But it can't be....?

We need to know what it is first. It could be a distraction. but, important:

>Get ready to protect Ginka and the divers, and to give them the room and time they need for the ritual

>Draw the sword the mermaids gave you. It is still an underwater protector of Japan, after all, even if you refuse to continue the sacrificing.

I say we use Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki-sama when dealing with the Oni directly, when it's sure they won't get down in peace.
>>
>>45637111

>>

Can we not put up a Barrier, catching only ourselves and our opponent up in it?
>>
Come to think of it, the mermaid sword must have been part of foiling the plans of hundreds of Water beings who wanted to harm humans, in the past.

I mean, most of those beings use storms or drowning to accomplish their agenda, and the sword was used to send warnings about those.
>>

Troublesome stuff. Time to think hard.

Your first priority is Ginka-chan, who has gotten caught up in this through absolutely no fault of her own. Serves you right for trying to have one normal friend. That being said, you recall another weapon, possibly more appropriate – the bronze sword given to you by Grandmother Ningyo, meant to birth more of their kind through ritual sacrifice.

….now there's a thought.

Setting aside the idea of making the General a sacrifice to your father, you peer through the water towards the source of the noise. It's definitely large, much larger than an oni-child, and its got fins, and a long tail. In fact the tail seems to be causing the most noise, rather than the movement through water of its body.

Darting up to place yourself in front of and nearer to Ginka (who swims closer to you, clearly distressed by what she is hearing and the blood-scent of the water, you realize you could combat that illusion too. The problem is you're not going to have time to deal with everything you want to do at once before the creature – currently a huge fish-like shadow some few hundred feet away – comes within actual visual and slaughterable range.

>No more than two choices may be selected.
[] Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume – short, deadly, and swift.
[] Matagama-no-Shitoki – burn the illusions and false shadows away.
[] Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki – break her prison against the enemy flesh.
[] Seido no Shinpi-tekina Ken – use the Mysterious Sword of Bronze.
[] Create a Barrier – and take any spirit-creature within a mile, but only underwater.

Us taking this sword away is what gives hope to the mermaids.

Once we're in our underwater home, we should make a room for Ningyo Hime.

I know she's not sapient the same way than say, an Oni-child, but that's not something that should stop Ryukusa from cuddling with the mother of her daughters.

Nothing can be destroyed forever. Destruction is limited by something like the conservation of mass. You don't erase things, you destroy their nature. And Ryukusa has an oni smith as a follower.

[X] Seido no Shinpi-tekina Ken – use the Mysterious Sword of Bronze.
[X] Matagama-no-Shitoki – burn the illusions and false shadows away.

You yank the bronze blade from ~Nowhere~ and then call upon the power of the necklace worn under the soft white gauze of your diving uniform. The sword shocks the heck out of Ginka, who swims back a couple of feet in alarm as you brandish the ancient blade wide.

The blade is notable in a couple of ways. First, it is a tsurugi or ken style blade, a double sized blade of truly ancient style, more similar to the original form of the Grass Cutting Blade than the katanas most people think of Japanese warriors using. It is also somewhat broader at the upper half and base than the middle, a leaf-style that you're not very familiar with. Well, as far as seeing them; it's a weapon, you know exactly how to use it. Finally, and the most peculiar aspect of it, is that despite having been underwater for what must be centuries, the blade is perfectly sharp, balanced, and not even faintly corroded. In fact, the blade seems like it's never been used.

Mysterious indeed.

Matagama-no-Shitoki responds immediately, and the shadows are dispelled instantly, as is the scent of blood in the water. You also reveal Oh-sama, some distance away, sitting on a soggy looking cloud underwater, one leg hanging off the edge and leaning on the knee of her crossed leg, with an intense and ferociously interested expression. As alarming as that is, you only have eyes for the monstrously deformed dragon-fish that is swimming towards you. The bulging eyes of burning coal and the wide, broad fins and the huge maw are not the worrisome part, though the thing is at least as large as a whale shark and its tails much longer.

No, the part that worries you are the barbed and hooked flesh of the thing's hide and the numerous barbed hooks protruding from the vanes of its tail.

An isonade, the beach-slapping hook-tailed shark youkai.

Undoubtedly drawn by the general's illusions and power, now that it's here it won't settle for anything less than living flesh. Your hand clenches tight around the handle of Seido no Shinpi-tekina Ken as Ginka cowers behind you. It's moving languidly, sure, but those tails will lash out and capture anyone they sweep past, and while the suits the Ama divers wear might break away easily, those hooks will tear right through the suits and into the flesh. It looks like a Barrier might be a good idea after all, especially if you can kick Ginka out of it which should be no problem.

The problem with that is you'll be trapped in a barrier with one of the warlords and a fucking massive youkai....and there's absolutely nothing to stop the General from initiating Barrier Combat with you. Ginka would be safe....but your not sure how well immortality will protect you from being eaten by a great devourer. And it would be the warlord's pleasure to take your head if you become incapacitated. Water eyes assures you of it; right now, Oh-sama is having fun seeing what you'll do, hopefully making you squirm, and terrorizing the mortals, all of whom see the isonade as a massive shark that somehow got past the nets. She's just here to keep you busy, though the girl you're protecting has just become a target of opportunity. She smirks at you, her dark eyes glittering wickedly.

[] Create a Barrier over you, the isonade, and Oh-sama.
[] Grab Ginka and do this youkai in as quickly as possible.
[] You might not have full control, but you can use power over the Water to make everyone but yourself safe.
[] Send Ginka to help the Ama escape – Oh-sama is enjoying her game right now.
[] ….Fuck this shit. Time to show them what you really are, even if you don't take Horobi's mantle now.

[XXX] You might not have full control, but you can use power over the Water to make everyone but yourself safe.
[X] Grab Ginka and do this youkai in as quickly as possible.

So Daimyo Oh of the General's Two wants a fuckin' show does she? Well, she's going to get her a fuckin' show.

You grab Ginka's hand and pull her close to you, keeping her slightly behind you and to the left. You sweep the blade wide, coming to a stop when it's pointed at the isonade's nose, which is only a hundred feet off. Ginka crowds you a little, but you don't really give a damn right now. Right now, you have to protect your father's people and prevent a bloodbath.

Without a barrier, your powers aren't nearly as strong as they could be. On the other hand, you're no longer just a Water dragonette. You're a demigod, and that means you are not entirely bound by the rules of the world. You're not going to let this monster get away with killing your new friends and ruining one of Japan's great treasures, and you're certainly not going to let the isonade eat anyone here either.

With a sweep of your tail you churn the water beneath you and throw it up in front of you, but you use your power to take the eddies and current you create and multiply them exponentially. The ball of roiling waters gets the isonade's attention, eyes the size of tractor wheels focusing slowly upon you. You churn the water harder and faster....then you use the bronze blade to shave swaths of the waters and fling them off in every which way.

The roiling waters become currents within the ocean and you sweep them towards the Ama divers, washing them away from the mountain walls of the island of Mikimoto, and sweep them all towards the surface, unconcerned about their baskets or weights. It's easy to also use your power over water to depressurize them as they are swept from the various depths to the surface.
>>
>>45638881

Then again, that's true of any situation, without hubris from our part.

Oh-sama 's cloud disintegrates under the potency of your power and you can feel the deep, painful ache of overusing your power in the real world throughout your whole body. On the other hand, she's enjoying the sight immensely, while the youkai....it's a youkai, it's just hungry and frightening. Ginka is in awe as you rescue the Ama from the water demons present, and then you pull her to the side as the massive fish-monster slides through the water. It ignores you, undoubtedly planning to swat you with it's tails in passing, the barbs catching you and your friend, tearing your flesh and shredding your bodies to make you a more tasty meal for the creature.

So you stab it in the base of the eye, through the flesh of it's eyelid and angled into the iris.

THAT gets its attention and it roars, a bone-aching semi-shriek of agony as the light in the massive dome of its eye is rapidly eclipsed by clouds of black blood. The creature rears, thrashing its fins and tails in every direction, forcing you and Oh-sama to dodge and weave through the oceanic turbulence of a wounded youkai. Water eyes tell you of her shock and surprise, but she isn't incapable of coping with something like this, despite the surprise.

Oh-sama is mischievous and just as clever as you are. Her skills and techniques are long honed against enemies of the Ryuu Clan and she moves through the water as easily and skillfully as yourself, though nowhere near as quickly. She pulls her favorite weapon, an oni-forged naginata named Suriburimuba – because she likes cutting arms off – and does her best not to get torn to shreds by the thrashing bakemono.

[] Take advantage of the thrashing creature to take a stab at Oh-sama.

[XXX] Create a Barrier now and 'lose' Ginka outside of it.
[XX] Try and destroy Sleeve Cutter in passing.
[X] Take advantage of the thrashing creature to take a stab at Oh-sama.
[X] Carve it into fillets.

One of the interesting side effects of being able to feel other people's Water is that when you are in the water, and holding onto someone else, they become simply an extension of yourself, which means you can move them as you would move. In other words, you can take insane risks and what would seem like suicidal moves without risking them at all. Not that you're going to do too much of that with poor Ginka – despite her scars, you suspect she's almost never dealt with anything like this outside of scary stories shared with classmates back at Celestial High School.

The isonade is recovering, but not quickly and now it's angry as all heaven. Both you and Oh-sama are having to avoid its now directed fury, which pretty much takes most of both of your attentions.

The key word being 'most'.

Diving past coils and fins, twisting out of the way of a fan of barbed vanes, darting along the spiny edges of the youkai, you get your chance as Oh-sama carves a deep gouge into the creature's flesh, obscuring your sight of her with a cloud of blood and drawing the isonade's attention squarely to herself. You dart through a rapidly closing coil of the creature's length, and whip Ginka to face you.
>>
>>45639806
You lift the sword and she starts to cower, but your fingertip touches her forehead. (Don't surface, just hide in the ocean! I'll find you!) The burst of thought through the Void and the calming power of your Chi Disrupting Technique (damn right you're capitalizing that shit!) makes her blink in shock as you blast her free and far away from of the sphere of terrifying flesh and horrific currents with an unfocused shockwave of water. You turn back to the fray, calling on Matagama-no-Shitoki's power to assist yours as you slam a huge Barrier around yourself, the isonade, and Oh-sama, one that even Akari-chan would have trouble breaking into or out of.

You do not, however, extend it outside the water. This time you have to trust that your family knows what they are doing this time. There isn't any other option available to you.

Sliding into the bloody water you take several slashes at the youkai in passing, adding more black blood to the water; the blade cuts through the tough flesh like a razor blade, though it doesn't slice through bone as easily, more's the pity. Water Eyes tells you nothing about the youkai other than it's now out for spirit-child blood; not unsurprising. You can feel Oh-sama's water eyes on you too, but unlike those of a dragonne or dragonette, there isn't so much disruption in yours. Apparently you both benefit from it.

So you blank your mind and slide through the thrashing, deadly water, opening gashes in the creatures flesh and clouding the water as much as possible. Because unlike her, you can feel where both she and the youkai are. And it isn't long before you have the best opportunity....

[X] Try and break Suriburimuba.

An ordinary person would never have the opportunities you have. Even the average spirit-child might only come up with one possibility; a particularly skilled or intelligent one maybe two.

You see them all.

Making your decision, you slide through the coiling, massive rolls and swaths of thin vanes in graceful swoops and coils of your own, while Oh-sama jabs, slices, cuts, stabs. She seems to dart here and there in short bursts, like a powerful yet ungainly ocean animal. Black ichor fills your Barrier, though it is largely clear around Oh-sama, which isn't surprising. You simply don't bother to keep your area clear, which means the shocked expression on her face is quite genuine when you explode from the bloody cloud, swimming between her and the isonade as she goes to drive her naginata deep into its flesh.

She doesn't pull her blow though, and you know she has the reaction speed to do so. Not that you care – you don't WANT her to pull the blow. But it isn't you that she gets to stab either. Well, not your body – just your hand.

Your left hand.

The sound of Sleeve Cutter shattering as it impacts your indestructible palm makes a painful ringing noise that causes the isonade to flee through your Barrier. But not by crashing through your Barrier and into the real world. Instead the isonade fades, slipping silently into the spirit world, leaving you and Oh-sama surrounded by clouds of roiling black blood in a globe of pure sea water. You swim to the far side as she backpedals and watches the gleaming fragments of her weapon shimmering as they fall into the depths of your Barrier.

“Daimyo Ryuu Oh, of Clan Ryo. What will you do now?” One advantage to being in a Barrier – you can talk to each other.

She turns her blue-black eyes on you, her soft lips curling into a smile. “Well, I think I should go assist my sister in capturing one of your people. But I suspect you have other plans, Ryuu Ryukusa.” Oh-sama flexes her hands slowly, the tendons and joints crackling and popping audibly through the water. She turns her wrists up, rotating them each in turn. “The real question is how badly you wish to be hurt in achieving your goals....presuming you can even manage to achieve one.” Her confidence is supreme of course, but she's not underestimating you. Not after that display of skill and power. Your demigod nature is perfectly clear to her, but she can also see you're not quite finished growing yet, and that means she can possibly do something permanent and unpleasant to further restrict your growth.

She is aware of your awareness of these things as well – her Water eyes work exactly as yours do.

You study her for a moment more, but you're getting little useful information from Water Eyes; she's probably doing no better with you at this point. So you study the bronze blade, taking your eyes completely off of her as you run your fingertips along the burnished blade. It really is an unusual weapon, an old weapon. If there is a kami present, it's gone dormant for a long time; there isn't much to mark the blade either, neither maker nor prayer. It might even be ancient Chinese rather than Japanese, it's so old.

“Well, we can begin negotiations now, if you like. I'm not entirely sure whether you'd really want to fight me here, Oh-sama.” No reason not to give her a measure of respect after all. She is an older woman after all. “You may be a creature of Water, but oni-children are more pure than we dragonettes tend to be. And the ocean isn't pure, not the way your power tends towards.” You glance up, feeling her frown more than seeing it. “I ~did~ pay attention in class, you know.”

“Perhaps you did at that, Ryukusa-san.” Huh, you really expected less politeness. Then again, she's representing a kamuy, more or less. “Still, for all your growth, you're still not a true demigod, and you haven't taken Horobi's power for your own yet. Come home, Ryukusaq-san, speak with Oba-san. This could still be resolved peacefully.” She has no hope at all that you'll listen to her.
>>
>>45641307
You drop the bronze sword into nowhere, to her surprise, and cross your arms, your tail washing back and forth slowly. You reach out and gather the blood that you and she spilled; the clouds start to spin, faster and faster, then streamers peel off and the ichor is gathered into a tight black sphere over your hand over the course of a minute. Surprisingly, she is impressed.

But that's nothing.

Squeezing your hand into a claw, you compress the ichor into a tiny sphere of darkness, and then draw every last bit of moisture from it, crushing it into a black bead the size of your thumbnail. It floats serenely over your hand. You burned off a portion of your shen rescuing the Ama, but you're still at four fifths – enough to seriously devastate the area. This was nothing, now. It would have been nearly impossible before you discovered your true nature.

And that scares Oh-sama as nothing else has so far.

“How is your sister doing anyways? Can you feel her, through the Barrier?” Her full lips compress into a thin line. “I didn't think so.” you don't mention that you can't sense the others either; even if Water eyes reveals it to her, it's just impolitic to mention a potential weakness to an enemy. “Fighting me here is asking for a fate as bad or maybe worse than death.” You snatch the bead out of the water and put it ~Nowhere~. “So....abandon your mission. Leave. I'll send your sister after you, unharmed by me.” Important caveat, that. “Go away. Or Else.”

[+] You had one chance already....but this is your Last Chance EVER.

You don't sneer really; your cheek twitches, and you kind of squint your eyes. That was so cliché even you wouldn't stoop that far. But then again, people have no sense of proper cliché anymore, and you kind of have to pick up the pieces for them.

You draw Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki from ~Nowhere~ and unsheathe her, then let the sheath fall back into ~Nowhere~. You don't bother telling Oh-sama where you got the weapon; she immediately recognizes it, and is confused and alarmed by the damage it shows. If another katana was showing core metal like this one, it would have been a worthless weapon. “I was kind of thinking a double date. I could bring Akari, you could bring your sister, we could have a nice dinner, maybe karaoke....” Her face doesn't color at the suggestion of sis-con tendencies, but you would have been surprised if she had.

You bring up your left hand and smack the back of the blade hard, backhanding it. But you also super-pressurize the water around the weapon, forcing it into the cracks and openings of the blade. The steel explodes away from the titanium core, revealing a slender blade of light brown material; it is burnished, but not polished, and there is no hamon. It was not tempered, and this doesn't surprise you – it isn't an ordinary blade by any means. It's almost as long as the original casing was. The blade sings loudly enough that Oh-sama half turns her head in pain, and covers one ear. You let her deafen you, because a moment later you're not deaf anymore.

You do keep the blood from coming out of your ears, though.

The metal fragments drift down, shimmering brightly as you lower the blade to a one-handed ready position. Here, in Water, you can do things no sane person would do with such a long weapon.

“Really, Daimyo Oh-sama....what a stupid question that was.” You shift your grip just slightly, making the blade shift in the water, and then you narrow your eyes. Actually, you close them. You close them and concentrate, concentrate HARD. Her touch on your cheeks, her kiss, her fingers tracing those signs....they burn, under your skin, blue fire lighting the ocean around you, your eyes blazing with hot light of darkest blue: Amaterasu-Omikami's declaration and gift to you, your name and duty writ upon your cheeks by Her hand.

Oh-sama is staring at you, because while you have the appearance of Horobi, and none of the true power of Horobi, things she was aware of, now she sees the truth that Amaterasu-Omikami's promise is written upon your face, in Her script, by Her hand.

“Ask me again. I dare you.”

>>
>>45642372
That's what I'm wondering too. Feels like her knowing Amaterasu's involvement could either make her feel cornered and desperate enough to become truly dangerous, or it could simply intimidate her in convenient ways. And considering she's losing control of Kinashut Kamui, I feel the former is inevitable anyway if it is to occur at all, so info on Amaterasu probably won't be too bad.

The real problem would be if she could figure out a way to deal with Amaterasu, but I find that unlikely and she'd probably be doing so anyway if she could.

>>
>>45642517
Yeah, I figured she'd have no way of actually affecting Amaterasu. I was thinking more something like luring Ryukusa into a trap that would let her 'hide' Ryukusa from Amaterasu for a time, briefly sever their connection or the like. Guess she's simply screwed though!
