We sit in the large, abandoned warehouse around a wooden table. Some playing cards are haphazardly strewn about, as if someone was in the middle of a game just before our rude interruption.

Of course, I can't think of a better interruption than driving a moving vehicle through the wall.
I am Itsukuma Masami, and I've finally got Marie to sit down and talk about what she was going on a rampage about across town.
Asai is safely sealed inside of a card in my pocket; along with a monster which is somehow linked to him.

Marie, despite her crazy and short-tempered nature, does know when to sit down and talk when she's beat. I think nearly running her over with a forklift was her sign that it was time to maybe sit down and talk things out.

What does she want from me that she kidnapped her daughter, went on a hunt, and trapped a warehouse specifically for me?

"I want Asai." Marie says, before anyone has even said anything.

"But I didn't-"
"I don't care. I want Asai. Give me the card he's imprisoned in and I promise I'll destroy him quickly."

I let those words sit for just a moment.

"How do you know you'll actually destroy him? He's pretty tough."
"Don't care, I'll do it. I'll figure something out."

>"That's not very comforting. What if he escapes?"
>"No."
>"I don't like your methodology."
>"If you think you can destroy him, by all means go ahead."
>"No harm in trying, right?"
>"Well, except for him maybe escaping and setting the monster loose again."

"That's not very comforting." I cross my arms. "What if he escapes? What if you.. Break my house?"

"Just make another."
"No, Marie. What if you break my house and he escapes?"

"I can deal with it."

We sit in silence, staring at one another. Of course, the drama is almost completely ruined by the fact that she's covered in varying paints of clashing colors.
"
"No."
"Why not?!"
"I don't like your methodology."

"My 'methodology' has been passed down through generations, and I am a master of that art!"
"Something tells me your previous generations never dealt with anything like this before."

Oh, that made her face turn a really silly red color.

"Listen! I understand you're upset, and that you think you have all the answers. It's just that, this is a family matter! I don't like Asai, but I don't think this is how he should be dealt with! If anything, we should leave this up to Mom."

"I don't trust another mon-"
She hesitates at that last word.
"-another person like Asai to make decisions regarding Asai."

"Why is it your job, though? What gives you that authority?" I almost stand up, but the monster directs me to remain seated.

"Because prisons can't contain Asai and human penal code doesn't mention anything about monsters!"

"Ew, is 'penal' a real word?"

Her face goes blank. Aiko, despite her sad face, suddenly stops herself from giggling.
The monster sighs.

Wait, OH MY GOD DID I JUST SAY THAT OUT LOUD?!

I MUST LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT! OH NO!

"W-wait wait, what I mean is-" I try to recover, and ignore the massive error I just made, "He broke human rules, right? He should face human punishments. That's what it means to live in society."

"Asai is a leech, saying he's 'lived' in society is a joke."

"That's why the law is there to punish him, right?"

"No, that's why I'm here to punish him."

"Wait, wait." I put up my hands, "W-we should get everyone involved to make that decision. That's not a decision that you alone can make. Asai has taken things from lots of people!"

"Are you just buying time?" I can tell her patience is wearing.

"No, I'm really bad at this negotiating thing and I want to get more help before I laugh at the word 'penal' again." I say, truthfully.

Her glare continues to be fixated on my face. Suddenly, it breaks, and she sighs.

--

A car moves along the deserted streets. None of the police cars seem to spot it, and it continues to weave and and move between roadblocks with ease.

It turns into the alleyway and drives with caution down the narrow corridor of brick.
The vehicle comes to a sudden stop, and the engine cuts out.

A tall man with brilliant red hair steps out.

"What the hell happened here?!"

"Hey Pops." Ken'ichi casually smiles. "Sorry we didn't fix the place up. Wasn't expecting company."

"Kid." The principal seems serious. "Do you have any idea how much damage this is to a warehouse of this size? You better not be expecting me to pay for it if this is another one of your fights with Ryouta."

"No, no. This is Masami's work." Ken smiles, "I taught 'er well."

The principal ambles over the twisted and broken metal of the building. He grumbles as he sits down at the table with Marie.
They both remain wordless.

A little, too wordless.

The principal continues to lock eyes with Marie. Neither of them are saying anything.
Cirrus, who has seemingly erected a cardboard fortress out of the discarded boxes, sneezes.

That causes both of them to jump. It's like they're about to stand up and draw pistols like those old westerns at any moment.

Oh no, do these two have a history, too?!

"Um."
"Not now." Marie snaps at me.
"Marie, can-" The principal seems to seize this opportunity!
"Shut up, David." Just for Marie to shoot him down.

More staring, more silence.

More tension!

More terror..

I think about saying something to lighten the mood, to maybe introduce the two, to do anything!
But, somehow, I just can't find it in myself to do it. Instead, I stare at this standoff and wait.

..And wait..

..And-
"Masami?" Cirrus speaks up, but I can only see the top-half of her head sticking out of a box.

No! That wasn't the person I was hoping would speak!

"Why isn't anyone talking?"
"W-well, you see-"

"This is pointless." Marie sniffs.
"This is hopeless." The principal huffs.

"Do they hate each other?" Cirrus speaks up, yet again.
"C-Cirrus. Please. They're having a conversation."

"They don't seem to be doing a good job." Thanks Cirrus, thanks a whole bunch.

She stands up in the box, and points to Marie.
"Mom says that if you have a problem with someone, you should hug it out! Why not try it?!"

"That's it." I say, crossing my arms and pouting. "I'm calling Mom."

"Wait."
"I don't think that's necessary."

Wow, they seem suddenly defensive.
Did I hit a nerve?

I take my phone out and tap Mom's tile on the front. It starts to ring.

"Uhh, Hey Marie, want to- um, talk about something?!"
"Um! Sure! Lots of things! See? Masami? We're talking!"

Why are they acting like this?

"Hello?"
"Mom! I have the Principal and Marie here, we're trying to work out what to do with Asai!"

They're both sitting ramrod straight.

"Wow! They're like.. sitting in the same room?" Mom has an almost tone of disbelief in her voice.
"Yes, Mom. They're here with me right now."

With that, I put the phone on speaker.

"Go on, say Hi to Mom."

..

Neither of them say anything.
In fact, it almost feels like I've made the atmosphere just that much more awkward.

"Okay, you two. Quit it." Mom says, in an almost commanding tone. "You're both acting like teenagers, and I can feel the tension even from here."

"I just want Asai, I didn't come here to talk about past history." Marie turns her nose up at the phone.
"And I just want everyone to go back to normal." David leans back in his chair.

"Then stop and talk this over! Listen, I'm like two blocks away. Want me to-"
"We don't need YOU to be here for this." Marie huffs. "We're perfectly fine!"

"OH I GET IT!" Cirrus exclaims, "You two used to be, like, a THING!"
I immediately rush over and cover Cirrus' mouth. Though, I feel the damage has already been done.

My hand clasps over Cirrus' mouth, as she desperately tries to make her thoughts known.

"MMmph! Mm! Mmmh! Mph!"
"Cirrus! Stop! This is really important!"
"Mmmrhgh!"

I whisper in her ear, "Okay, okay. Cirrus. If I let my hand off your mouth, you won't say anything about 'relationship' or 'dating' or 'romance', okay?"
"Mmph."

I take my hand off Cirrus' mouth. She sheepishly looks up at my face.
"Couples."

That's when I slap my hand back over her mouth again.
"Mmph!"
"What did I just say?!"

Ugh, I don't even know what to do at this point.

Mom is on speakerphone with Marie and the Principal, trying to talk both of them down.

"Come on you two!" I hear the exasperation in her voice. "Stop this! Decide what you're going to do with Asai."

"I'm not telling."
"I don't have to tell him."

..And they're just about as far now as they were last time.

This is really starting to make me angry.

"Okay that's enough!" I shout.

Everyone's eyes turn on me. My confidence only withers juuust a little!

"You two need to put this aside! We have a real problem! There's a dangerous criminal inside of this card, and I don't know what to do with him. We can't leave him in there, because he could get out! So why don't you two just put this aside and deal with the problem!?"

"We're not-"
"Yeah- we're-"

"That's not entirely the-"

I ignore her, and instead move on to the other participant.
"And you! I don't even know what you want! You're acting worse than I do!"

"I think destroying Asai will just make things worse. Like it or not, he brought balance. He may be a loon, but he's still the staple that held all those different factions together." He sighs, "I think he should just be banished, preferably to a remote island."

"There! Now, which one is better option?"

"My option."
"Mine, of course."

"You, what do you think?" I point to the steely gladiator-like guy.
"I.. Can that remote island be tropical?"

"Cirrus, what do you think?!"
"I think I need to go to the bathroom."

"Then-"
We don't have consensus at all.

"Then we'll wait for someone else to show up."

Mom!

It's Mom.

She looks safe, not limping or anything.
Um, she's not in custody either.

I was really worried when I ran off last time. It's just- I had bigger things to worry about!

Wait, wait. No. I'm getting all shakey again. It's only been like three hours since I saw her last.

She's fine, I'm fine. Everyone is fine.

"So- U- Um."

Forget it! There's only one thing I want to do anyway!
I run over and jump into Mom's arms!

"MOM!" I press my face into her, "Mom I'm terrible at bringing people together! How do you do it?!"

"Uhhh." Her face goes blank at that question.

"You two!" Daichi stomps up to the table and slams his palms onto it. "Stop acting like little kids! My little kids act more responsible than you little kids."

"Daichi! Tell us! Should Asai be destroyed or just banished?!"
"I say he should be depowered."
"Same here!" Daichi stomps his foot. "Just find a way to get rid of his powers and he can serve his sentence like any normal person!"

"'Find a way to get rid of his powers' isn't that easy. First off, he's in a prison right now, and I'm not sure what would happen if he gets out."

"Furthermore, even if we got rid of his powers, we don't know how they work. He might just get them back again and go on another rampage."

>"Everyone, hold on! Maybe we can think of a way to depower him."

I break away from Mom for a short moment, and tug at her sleeve.
"Mom, what do we do?"

"Just wait a few moments." She pats my head. "They're stubborn, but they'll work something out. They always have."

We sit and admire as the great minds devise a solution.

"No, I broke up with you."
"NO! No no no, That's not how it happened! I broke up like a day before you stormed up to me and said that you're breaking up with me! You're just sour apples about-"

"Guys, what about Asai?" Adele rubs her temples.
"What about him?!"

"Probably would have been a better boyfriend than you were."

"Pfft Hahahah!"
"Shut up, Daichi. This is serious!"

Mom sighs.
"I almost think you would be the best person to make this decision."

We stand in silence, watching the insanity unfold for just a few more minutes.

"Even if you weren't dating me at the time." Marie hits the table, "That doesn't change that the whole thing was YOUR fault!"
"Listen, it's not my job to be with you at all times of the day. You were just so damn clingy. Now I see why your husband split."

He shouldn't have said that.
Marie reaches over the table and grabs his collar, and readies a punch.

"Into a hu-"

Like a spark, my mind tingles like I forgot something really important!
Oh yeah! That thing!

"-I remembered." I lie, subtly. "It's just, nothing I did seemed to work."

I frown, pulling Mom's coat toward me.
"The friendly monster is still like he is, and Asai doesn't seem to have changed at all."

We stand in silence, watching the 'adults' squabble over relationship drama that had to have happened twenty years ago.

"Um, Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Why does Asai look relatively normal? Other monsters turned to human when they entered that house."

She pauses, and then coughs.

"I don't know. I didn't make the card."

I let those words sit for a moment, but only a moment.
"What does that mean?"
"I didn't make the card. I don't know how it works."

"But- Shouldn't it be like, follow rules? Or something?"

"I don't know what that means, Masami."

"What I mean is, shouldn't it follow like a certain set of rules?"
"I don't know. Does it?"

Mom is always like this when it comes to talking about Magic.

"Would there be a way to inspect the card and find out?"
"Maybe when you were creating it. But now it's made, and any kind of thoughts or wishes you had for it are in. Do you remember what you were thinking when you made the card?"

Hey guys, I am feeling a little sick. I may end the thread within the next couple of hours if I don't start to feel better. I'm hoping to get a little further in the story because we've been stuck at this speedbump for a while.

That's okay, hope you get better!

"I just wanted a big home."
I look toward Cirrus, who has taken to reinforcing her little box-fortress in case of invaders or something.

"I wanted a big home for the big family I felt we were building." I grab Mom's arm. "I love you, Mom, and I love how you have a heart big enough to hug the whole world. I'm just worried that we won't have room for everyone we wanted to hug."

"Sweetie." Mom pats my head. "I am so happy that you feel that way, but I can change the shape of my house any time I want."

That.. makes me pause for thought.
"You can what?"
"I.. never mentioned it before. The house is not natural. When Asai started giving me a paycheck, I used that money to buy a small, overgrown lot outside the sight-range of Fortune HQ." Her hands feel nice on my scalp. "The house was made shortly thereafter, took me about a day to find furniture for it."

"It's.. not real?"
"It's real and made from real stuff, but the way I made it was magical in nature." She smiles.

I don't really get it.

"Anyway, so don't you worry about our house. I can make it just the right size to fit everyone you would want to hug, don't you worry."

At that moment, I realized Mom was the best person on Earth.

"So, is that why you trapped Asai in there?"

"Well, no. Remember earlier how I wanted to make a card that turned monsters into people? That was the card. It sort-of worked with the friendly monster, but he turned back the moment he left."
"Anyone else like that?"

I nod, "The scary joker from Fortune. She turned into a little girl when she was brought there."

"Huh, that's interesting!"

Then the reality hits me. "So why doesn't it work with Asai? He looks mostly normal."
Well, as 'normal' as Asai can get.

Mom ponders that thought, "That's a good question. I don't know."

"Could it be because he's just that terrible of a person?!"
"I'm actually wondering." Mom considers for a second something strange. "Maybe he's not 'magic' enough?"

"..What do you mean?"
"Well, the building had all the power. The reason he could do the things he did was because he was inside of a building that did it for him. I don't think I've ever seen Asai directly use any magic."

>I have to disagree!
>I've seen him use it all the time!
>..Wait, is that true?
>This must be a mistake.
>Ask the others if they've seen him use magic

Hold on.
That has to be a mistake.

"Is this true?"
"Mm. As far as I know. His magic comes from his environment, mostly. If he does it, I've never seen it."

That doesn't make much sense to me, and also conflicts with a few things I've observed myself.

There's no way that can be right.

"Well, hold on, I mean- The building didn't change either. I don't think. It was some kind of boxy monstrosity when I saw it last."
"I'm not sure the building really counts as a 'monster'. Maybe it does, I don't really know for sure."

"This has to be some kind of mistake, hold on."

I walk over to the table, and am faced with the constant chattering of several different mouths.

At first, Aiko and Ken'ichi seemed embarrassed by their parents outburst.
Now they just seem tired.

"Yeah well YOU'RE the one who didn't want to go to prom that one time!"
"Who the hell cares about the damn high school prom?"

"People." I raise my arms, and hop onto the table! "STOP!"
"What?"
"We're trying to have a conversation here, Masami."

We're trying to- Ugh.
Adults are the worst.

I hope I never become an adult.

"Listen! Have either of you ever seen Asai use magic powers?"

They stop and consider this question.
"Well yeah, we saw the statues and the building and-"
"No, not the building. I mean Asai himself. Ever seen him, um, throw a fireball, or cast a spell, or whatever?"

Silence.

"Huh, I don't think I have."

>I'm beginning to think there's something with Asai that he's not telling us.
>Excuse me, I have to visit someone (Go see Asai)
>Back to Mom, see what she thinks.
>What if we just, pulled him out, would he really be able to fight back?
>Huh. This is weird. Something must be wrong.
>Hold on! There was that one time, in Fortune, with the card. Cards count right?

I'm here, but I've worn down. Next post is last.

Sorry about disappearing there! I went and had late dinner.

"Huh, this is."

I'm not even sure what the word for this is.
"Weird."

"Well, I'm sure he uses magic! He's just the kind of monster that gets other people to do his dirty work for him."

"There was this one time in Fortune where he used a card. That was magic, right?"

"Mm."
"That's definitely magic."
"He probably knows some pretty powerful stuff, but he's not just going to show it to everyone." Marie grumbles. "If he just used it every time, people would find ways to counter it."

That's a good point, but I'm taking it from the most paranoid person.

I go back over to Mom, and she's starting to seem as worried as I am.
"Mom, I'm beginning to think there's something with Asai that he's not telling us."

"Oh I know there is something with him." Mom sighs. "But I don't think it's as easy as what we're thinking. There has to be some other reason."

My mind swirls with ideas. What possible reason could there be?

"Masami." Mom thinks about this question thoroughly. "I think something must be wrong, too. Would that Joker girl have any insight to Asai?"

..
"She might, she was his right-hand man."

"Let's go ask her that question, then. Maybe she say something? Where is she?"

"I think we were taking her home, maybe? I don't remember. I think she's with Ryouta and Maeda."

I take out my phone and quickly send a text to Maeda. A moment passes and my phone buzzes again.

"Clown went home, so did we."

"'Home'? Mom says, peering over my shoulder."
"Ugh, not that again." My face wrinkles. "Her 'home' is a dumpster and she keeps wanting to climb into it. Also, she needs a bath."

"Why is she living in a dumpster?!" Mom seems just as shocked as I am.
And I wish I had an answer for her.

Sorry about the extra wait on that last post.

But hey! 100 posts! Haven't had a thread get that far in a long time!
I think I'll start trying to do all-day threads again. Maybe start on a certain day and run through to the next day. It would be more convenient to do this for Thursday threads, just have them on Friday and run them into Saturday.

Worked great with this thread!

Let me know what you thought, and tell me how you felt about this thread. Have a nice night!

Riz got to you, didn't she? You can still turn back, Heart. Don't do this to yourself. Don't do this to me.

thanks for running
it was... interesting
i guess the fact that mom built her house with magic explains the nightmare we saw a while ago
anyway, rest well and all day thread? sounds like a lot of fun

The plot started moving again, that's how I felt.
>All day threads
Please don't overstress yourself, Heart. I'd like to see the ending.
