Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you reached Marqash and presented yourself before the court.

It is currently the 29th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You slip the edict dictating the arrest of the Demirs into your cloak just as Faris grabs you by the arm, dragging you towards the open doorway. His sword remains drawn, and you don't think to protest as the two of you trek through the vast hallways of the Marble Palace, Zahak loafing along behind you. He finally releases you at the vast stone gates, turning to you as they slowly grind open. “Why did you not tell me that you knew of my daughter's kidnapping?”

He's angry, though not really at you. His ire is directed inwards, at his own inability to protect his family. “Quite simply because I assumed you'd react much the same as you are now. I need the Demirs alive, or at least I need most of them alive, and I assumed that if I'd told you at the city's gates that the Demirs are responsible for the kidnapping of your daughter you'd run off to collect their heads and I'd be left with little in the way of reward for my efforts.”

The grinding of Faris' teeth seems unreasonably loud in the expansive hallways of the palace, but as loathe as he might be to admit it, he knows you're right. Truly the man is horrendous when it comes to hiding his emotions. Anyone with even a basic grasp of Nature magic would be able to read him effortlessly. He says nothing to you as the stone gates grind to a halt, stalking off towards the gardens that flank the Marble Palace on either side.

You follow him passively, down a long flight of stairs into the collection of fountains and greenery that comprises the Gardens of Marqash. You're not quite sure what to make of them, water streams from every surface, pouring in water falls from channels beneath the palace and from oddly constructed pavilions, each one shrouded behind a curtain of cascading sea water.

A mist hangs heavy in the air which, in the absence of the sun's rays, prompts you to pull your cloak a little tighter around yourself in the hopes of preserving some warmth. You suppose it might be pleasant around midday when the heat is at its worst, but with the last vestiges of light vanishing over the horizon it's less than pleasant. Your brother in law leads you to a small gate built into the garden's wall, which seems to lead directly into the Floating District.

Here the estates of the nobility and Vatis alike loom enormous at the edges of the canals, slender flat-bottomed row boats navigating the grand canals. If you recall correctly, Marqash was originally forced to expand outward, into the sea, because the Shah sought to limit their influence by forbidding any further expansion on land. Ironically their canals are now one of the main draws for anyone visiting the region, and many a noble family maintains an estate in the Floating District.

Faris turns to a guard, tersely delivering his orders. The Demir estate is to be surrounded, and anyone caught fleeing is to be arrested and held for questioning. You note that the City Guard seems to host a disproportionate number of Water Vatis, judging by the fact that their boats lack rowers. They seem to glide silently across the water, guided by will alone and propelled by the subtle manipulation of the current.

You remain on shore, standing beside Zahak, as Faris climbs into one of the squat boats that the city guard seem to use for transport around this part of the city. He turns to you, briefly eyeing Zahak before he speaks. “I trust you can reach their estate on your own. You'll recognize it by its banners, their heraldry hangs from every wall of the villa. Going by air I'm sure you'll arrive well before I do.”
(2/3)
>>
That would be helpful, if you could only recall the Demir's heraldry. You think their banner might be a hammer poised to strike an anvil, the golden sun blooming between the two, but you could well be confusing the Demirs with the clan Haddad. “Would you remind me of their clan's banner? Heraldry wasn't exactly the focus of my studies as a Vatis.”

Faris gestures vaguely to the south, deeper into the Floating District. “Blacksmith's tongs holding aloft a silver mask, against a golden background I think. Now, listen, I can respect that you need survivors to parade before the Shah and I do not wish to seem ungrateful. Were it not for you I cannot say how long my daughter would have remained their captive. However, I cannot allow this insult to go unanswered. Some of these rats must die, and I will be the one to see their sentence carried out.”

>Let's keep this in perspective, all they did was kidnap a girl. Underhanded though it may be, having the culprits executed would be a bit disproportionate.
>Honestly, your family straddles the border of war with the Demirs already. You plan to do little beyond see his daughter safely released and take perhaps one or two hostages. Whatever else happens, the Al-Misra must accept responsibility for.
>You were planning on arresting the lot of them and then putting their estate to the torch, after a thorough looting of course. Perhaps he can simply 'forget' the ones responsible for kidnapping his daughter inside, to be consumed by the blaze.

Surely a few Demir's will "resist arrest", nobody would blame Faris for acting in self defense.

Suggest that we capture the ones responsible and have them brought before a judge for trial
Maybe try and convince Kadir to banish them at some point, that would make our family seem impossibly powerful

More and more, your father's assessement of Faris seems accurate. He is a man driven by emotion rather than reason, and though he seems a good man you cannot help but think him course and unrefined. “Faris, allow me to be blunt. My family is on the cusp of full blown war with the Demirs as it is, and slaughteirng them in their own estate would no doubt merit a response in kind. Though my family is no doubt powerful, we have exhausted ourselves over the past several months and are in no place to fight a war. Our fleets were crushed in a battle off the northern coast, and our levy has been exhausted fighting off an invasion by creatures which dwell beyond the mortal realm.”

You haul yourself up onto Zahak's back, and calm your son as best you're able before he can launch you into the sky. “If you want to drag them into the public square and divorce their heads from their necks, be my guest. All I ask is that any consequences which follow fall upon the shoulders of the Al-Misra, and not the Abdul-Hakim. Whether my family will march to war alongside your own I cannot say, but it will not be for my actions that the peace of the realm is shattered.”

The man does not seem disuaded from his course. “I do not fear the might of the Demirs. I crushed the army of the Samraat twice at the fortress of Tel Hareb and a third time before the gates of Selepp, with barely a thousand men at my back.”

With those bold words, your brother in law waves his men forward. His boat slips from the docks without a sound, and before long he proceeds at a good clip through waterways of Marqash. You'd guess he has perhaps a hundred of the city guard with him, in twenty of those odd boats which seem so popular in this part of the town.

>>
Zahak takes to the air with little urging on your part, his wings struggling to carry you ever higher as the Floating District stretches out beneath you. You don't see any sign of the Demir's heraldry, but as Zahak flies further and further south the estates get progressively more elaborate. It's as you near the center of the Floating District, and the vast market which lies there, that you finally spy your first glimpse of the silver mask on gold that Faris spoke of.

You direct Zahak to circle around the estate, trying to get an idea for what you might expect in terms of defenses. The estate seems to be built up around a central courtyard, with perhaps six floors raised above ground level. Every now and then you'll spot a guard patrolling along the balcony on the third floor, but there seems to be little that would pose any actual threat. You think there might be some sort of feast taking place, because the courtyard is absolutely packed with men and women in noble's garb.

You have Zahak keep circling for now, the veil of invisibility descending unbidden over yourself and your son. Zahak's doing, you think. His grasp of illusions has really improved since those first few lessons you gave him so long ago, when he'd only just barely hatched. Sometimes you worry he might outpace you, if you don't press yourself harder to advance in the magical arts.

You don't have to wait long for Faris and his troops to appear in the canals below. It seems he split his men into two groups, with one grou approaching from the north and the other from the west. The guard standing on the balcony notices their approach, but he doesn't make it far before a shard of ice impales his throat. He slumps lifelessly to the tile floor, bow slipping from his hands. Another guard patrolling the south sound of the compound remains oblivious to the death of his compatriot, and the guest celebrating in the courtyard are none the wiser.

You wait until Faris and his men have the estate well and truly surrounded before urging Zahak forward. You fade back into visibility just in time to see your son's wings fold against his sides, and your stomach lurches into your throat as Zahak falls to the Earth. His wings snap out at the last moment to slow his descent, powerful muscles tensing in his shoulders to arrest your fall, and a roar splitting the air to give the noble guest of the Demirs enough warning to clear out of the courtyard.

Zahak ends up landing atop an elaborately carved wooden table, shattering it violently. His claws crack the marble tiles and his wings send glassware crashing to the floor in every direction. Someone among the crowd with the presence of mind to react hurls a bolt of fire in your direction, but it's snuffed out before it gets anywhere close to striking you or your son. Finally Zahak settles his weight on the crux of his wings and you smoothly dismount from his saddle, transluscent tentacles sliding from your cloak to bind you within the last few pieces of your Heavy Warlock armor.

The helmet slides over your head just as your feet touch the ground, blinding you until those spikes of carapace drive themselves into your spine. The pain is immense, burning through you with the all-consuming fury of dragon's fire before finally the soothing pulse of vys floods into your limbs, numbing you to the outside world. Your vision returns altered, the ebb and flow of ambient vys filling the courtyard with ghostly trails of color.

You do your best to suppress the Sight, focusing on your mortal perception for the moment. The crowd of nobles cower at the sight of you garbed for war, with a dragon at your back. Many have already fled the courtyard, seeking to escape to crafts left moored outside or to hide themselves away in the far reaches of the estate, but judging by the screams echoing from beyond outside the estate the guest have already met Faris and his men waiting outside. Those that remain are either too stubborn or too awe-struck to run, with one man in particular staring at you defiantly.
(2/3)
>>
He is dressed simply, in a white robe tied at the waist with a red sash, but what draws your eye is the strip of cloth hung about his shoulders. Purple, ornamented with gold. He is either a Grandmaster in one of the elements or a man presenting himself falsely as such. His beard grows thick and grey, placing his age somewhere around five hundred years, and even subdued as it is you can tell via the Sight that his vys reserves are enormous.

Your voice thunders forth, amplified not only by the walls of the courtyard but by your armor itself. “Surrender Nithya Al-Misra and the men responsible for her kidnapping, and I will leave you in peace. Resist, and there will be nothing left of this estate but ash come sunrise.”

A man steps forward, garbed richly in noble's dress. So much gold dangles off the man you're surprised he can stand at all. “Who are you to invade my home and make demands of me?! The Satrap will skin you alive when he learns of this insult!”

You reach into your cloak, drawing out the edic dictating the arrest of the Demirs and unrolling the parchment. “Let it be known that the honorable Satrap Farouk al-Latif hereby orders the immediate arrest of all members of the clan Demir residing within the confines of Marqash. They are to be held until they can be questioned regarding the kidnapping of Nithya Al-Misra, with full authority in this matter granted to any member of the city guard, or to the Mirza Mikhael of the clan Abdul-Hakim.”

As you finish your recitation you hold out the document for all to see, the signature of the Satrap scrawled prominently across the bottom of the page. “I'm afraid there will be no skinning alive, at least not upon the Satrap's orders. The Captain of the Guard may not be so forgiving considering it is his daughter that you've stolen off the streets.”

The nobleman is clearly furious, but it is the Vatis who speaks. “Let us have enough of these petty threats, Mikhael. You and I both know that none among my family will die this day, not by your hand. Can we not allow cooler heads to prevail, and thus avoid the spectre of war?”

You gently roll up the parchment, slipping it back beyond the horizon of your cloak. “What you say is true, Grandmaster, but I have never claimed that any would die by my hand. It is my brother in law you must fear. Your insult has sent the man into a rage, and he has promised to mount the heads of those responsible upon his trophy wall.” A bit of a colorful exaggeration, but not much of one. “If you desire to avoid war, I recommend you produce his daughter, and quickly. Hıs men have already surrounded the estate.”

(1/2)
>>
The noble opens his mouth to protest, but all he manages is a dry rasp as the Vatis leeches the moisture from his throat. “Very well, Mikhael. Your niece is on the sixth floor in one of the guest rooms. I will inform the guards to bring her down.”

He remains standing, motionless, before a long table stacked with all manner of seafood. Shrimp stripped of their shell and marinated in some manner of red sauce, oysters served in their shell ornamented with cilantro and black pepper, and all manner of other local delicassies. It reminds you that you haven't eaten since you left Nazir, but you ignore the complaints of your stomach.

Seemingly unbidden the gaurds arrive, holding between them a woman you presume to be Nithya. She wears a rich red dress trimmed with gold lace, heavy earing hanging from the lobes of each ear. She is an attractive woman, probably no more than sixteen or seventeen years old, with dark skin and a well toned figure. Though she seems unharmed, it's obvious that the girl is terrified. Every muscle in her body seems coiled like a spring, and the only thing stopping her from running is the firm grip each guard has on one of her arms.

The Vatis gestures magnaminously about the villa. “As you asked, we have produced the girl. Now, I trust we may leave her in your care and that may be the end of this dreadful little display.”

>They will need to produce the men responsible for her kidnapping, and you will be taking the nobleman in for 'questioning'.
>The edict stated that every Demir living within the confines of the city is to be arrested, including their guards and their servants. Demand they assemble themselves and wait for Faris to arrive.

Avatar mode is something Darzi can accomplish if we enchant just two artifacts. In addition, these artifacts would have massive utility use out of the Avatar state, giving Master tier Nature bonuses and access to a GM tier fire magic technique to whoever wears them. Speaking of which, we really need to start leverage Mortia's abilities as a chemist. Enchantment is made easier with isolation chambers, and we get mechanically, a +2 bonus to ever sense we deprive ourselves of. Let's call in the favors we earned taking her punishment at the water temple to have to tutor Darzi and Prof, and have create sense dampening potions for us to use while enchanting. Surely a grandmaster of alchemy such as herself will find that task easy, right Soma? >>45687738

See? The pieces for the Avatar project fall into place naturally. With two meditations, we will be able to gain one point of Vys and a level in Nature, or allow ourselves to reach the brink of fire Grandmastery, or if we're really lucky, two points of vys in techniques. With two sessions of enchantment, we can get Master tier nature bonuses and permanent, free access to a Grandmaster fire magic, and then combine them to elevate one of our companions over an Elder Dragon. Time wise, this is less than half a day's worth of labor.

Oh please. Halo ripoff Satan took the easy way out. The Avatar state only needs three things: Fire Mastery, Nature Mastery, and Marsala Ve Mastery. By making the Suryan Firebrand, we're getting Fire Grandmastery tier magic. By making the Inversion ring out of Spirit Ivory, we get Master tier Nature bonuses. And we ourselves as well as one of our companions have competency and mastery in Marsala Ve. We're not brokering any deals with demons, we're not sacrificing our soul; this is just the logical culmination of a lot of hard work.

The Invert-Revert array puts objects into a more refined state of being. Implemented on the mind, we get more powerful in mentally dependent tasks. On elements like Fire, it'll place the element into a higher state of being, IE Plasma. This energy, once created, is child's play for any Vatis competent in fire to control and is in fact, direct equivalent to an actual Grandmaster of Fire's lightning.
>>
>>45689058
Create lightning runes.

soma confirmed that once lightning has been created it is really easy tot control, and lightning is plasma so once you have control of it you are basically wielding liquid plasma. Plasma you dont even have to spend the vys to create, just control.

I would further like to note that the Suryan Firebrand is a purely optional artifact. The reason I made it was to further boost the raw damage an Avatar could dish out, without draining their Vys. Fire magic is the only form of magic able to be used side by side with Marsala Ve in a Martial Trance. Darzi and Prof are good at it. Being "good" at Fire Magic turns one's martial trance into a terrifying sight. Unlimited Grandmaster Lightning will elevate a user of the Martial Trance into an Avatar capable of dueling Elder Dragons.

You try to get across an apologetic tone, but your armor strips your voice of any emotion. “I am afraid it can't be that simple, Grandmaster. The edict states that all Demirs residing within Marqash are to be arrested, a demand which includes the servants and gaurds of your noble host, as well as his wives and children. The Satrap seems a fair man, I trust he will spare them the lash assuming they were not directly involved in the kidnapping of my niece.”

The nobleman regains his voice, hoarse though it may be. “Rostam, are you really going to let this glorified thug give us orders, in our own home? To hell with the city guard! You could kill them all with a thought! We will fight our way-” His voice cuts out as once again as the moisture drains from his mouth, sending him into a fit of coughing. You can't imagine that's very pleasant.

The Vatis glances briefly towards the noble, shaking his head. “You'll forgive my nephew, he speaks out of turn. Allow me a moment to speak with him in private and I will see that he agrees to your terms.”

You feel a pulse of vys, and the guards relax their grip upon your niece. She rips her arms free but seems torn between running towards you, and running towards the balcony. Frustrated, you try to think of some way to remove your helmet without deactivating your armor completely, and unbidden your vision cuts out. You're left blinded for several seconds, before your helm splits down the middle and slowly slides away.

A gasp runs through the small crowd of assembled nobles, which have assembled themselves into two loose groups. Presumably one constitutes visiting nobles, and the other consist of the Demirs themselves. The Vatis merely raises an eyebrow, while the Noble scowls at you fiercely.

You don't particularly care about them, your attention focused upon the horrified girl across the room. “Nithya, I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting but I'm your mother's younger brother, Mikhael.”

She approaches hesitantly, both curious and afraid. “She's spoken of you before, quite fondly. Though she did not mention that you glow.”

What is she talking about, glowing? “Well I don't usually, in fact I'm not even entirely sure what you're talking about. I assume it's related to this armor I wear. Regardless, your father should be arriving soon. Why don't you wait with Zahak?”

She timidly approaches you, and then at your gentle prompting moves to stand by your son. Zahak, for his part, is being remarkably well behaved. He's been bombarding your thoughts for the last several minutes with his urge to burn them all and let Pani sort it out, but to his credit has resisted this urge remarkably well.

Faris finally arrives as the rest of the family begins to trickle into the courtyard from the rooms above. He arrives with his sword drawn and bloody, a slash across his abomen having bit deep enough to draw blood. You heal it almost on reflex, the wound knitting closed without leaving so much as a scar. At first you worry he might do something rash, the way he glowers at the nobleman, but then he catches sight of his daughter.

She rushes from Zahak's side and hugs the man tightly about the waist, seemingly undisturbed by the gore-soaked image of her father. His sword falls from his hands, clattering loudly against the marble as he wraps his daughter in a warm embrace. Guardsmen are slowly filing into the courtyard now, taking up positions around the perimeter with spears held at the ready, a crowd of terrifed nobles filtering in with them. Presumably those were the ones who tried to escape.

Most eyes seem focused on you, presumably because you're apparently glowing. You wish you could catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror, but there don't seem to be any available. Fortunately, Faris remembers where he is and gently separates himself from his daughter, calling out to the guard. “Arrest the Demirs and see them escorted to the Satrap's palace. They'll be locked in the cells until such a time as they can be questioned. All others are to be detained here, until it can be determined whether or not they are creatures of these imbeciles.”

The Nobleman speaks, sounding utterly defeated. “Captain, if you will guarantee the safety of my family until such a time as they can be tried before the court, I will surrender myself peacefully alongside the men responsible for your daughter's kidnapping. Let it be known, the Demirs do not desire bloodshed.”

Toss a little jab at the Vatis about the previous assassination attempt and warn Faris QUIETLY that the Demirs have gotten their hands on some abominations of artifacts that can possibly rip the souls right out of men.

Chatty Mc noble nephew was also talking far more than he should have, and should be discretely separated for questioning by the Satrap. Also warn him that they used some sort of artifact to kill our previous witnesses before they could talk.

I say we find Zahak a lady dragon to bang. We could maybe set her up as the ruler/protector of Anthus and introduce her to the idea of taxation vs. Getting assassinated by the Mikster.

Then we can both do Angus boots calls.

We should have let him get his murder bone on.
And backed him up. Having most of them die, and the rest imprisoned to use as bargaining chips would have been easy to deal with.
Then having Faris taking most of the murders on his hand. The demise can't go to war with both us and our brother in law. While we have captives.
We should seriously see about taking over their lands and killing the core of their army and retaining those willing to give up information on the demirs.
>>
>>45691247
We just stated why starting a war with the Demirs would be a bad idea.
Not to mention would piss off the Shah.
>>
>>45691247
It would imply to the people that the Abdul-Hakims ain't nothing to fuck with.

Our brother in law goes ape shit and kills the demirs. We control him, so both sides see we are being level headed here.

You're really starting to get tired of Faris, and you've only been in Marqash perhaps an hour at most. “Faris, I understand you're angry but try to keep this in perspective. Your daughter is unharmed, and they seem to have treated her as well as could be expected under the circumstances. I doubt she's eager to see her father burning alive women and children who had seldom little to do with her kidnapping.”

The remind of his daughter's presence softens your brother in law, some of the fire leaving his eyes. Color returns to his knuckles as he relaxes his grip upon the hilt of his sword, yet he still doesn't seem entirely convinced. He struggles with the idea that he might ruin the heroic image his daughter has of him, but at the same time he wishes to see the Demirs punished for what they've done.

You barely need to focus at all to bring your mind in contact with Nithya's own. You could swear that at the corner of your eye you can see the threads of reality bowing out around you, but when you try to focus your attention on them they vanish. {Don't just stand there gawking, say something before your father starts slicing people apart with that sword of his. Some of these simpletons are actually important.}

She startles, glancing around the room for the source of the voice in her head. You frown. {It's Mikhael, I'm communicating with you mentally. Vatis are very strange creatures, you've no need to remind me. Now talk to your Father.}

Apparently that was the impetus she needed to finally speak. Hesitantly, she places a hand upon her father's arm and tries to pull him away from the Demirs. “Mikhael is right, the Demirs treated me well even if I was kept captive. They permitted me to walk the grounds and allowed me a servant. I'd rather not see them killed on my behalf.”
(1/2)
>>
There's a collective sigh of relief from everyone in the room as Faris finally sheathes his sword. “Fine, fine. I suppose they deserve a trial.” He sounds drained, emotionally and physically. It seems like the Demir's house guards might have put up quite the fight, though you can't say with any certainty that Faris wasn't simply attacking anyone he came across wearing the Demir's colors.

Faris lightly ruffles his daughter's hair, much to her displeasure, before turning his attention to the nobleman. “I will accept your terms, and guarantee the safety of your family as far as your trial. However, I can promise nothing further. Now, who were the men responsible for stealing my daughter from me?”

The nobleman gestures vaguely to the crowd of gathered nobles and as two of his guards step forward, three men make a break for the exits. You channel a bit of vys, ice accumulating rapidly on the marble tiles, and two go down immediately. The third actually manages to scramble across the ice only to whacked in the throat with the haft of a spear by one of hte city guardsmen. He goes down choking on his own spit, gasping for air.
(2/3)
>>
All three are quickly shackled and hauled off to stand with the Demirs, who themselves are being bound with their hands behind their back and slowly being dragged off to the rafts Faris used to transport his men. For now, it seems the crisis is averted, though you note with some curiosity that the Vatis does not number himself among the Demirs. You wonder what his fate will be. Technically, as a Vatis, he surrendered any rights he had to family name or noble title. Thus, he could probably argue for his exemption from the edict.

>Arrest him anyway, you think he's probably the one who's actually behind all this.
>He's dealt with you fairly, and all that aside you'd only be able to hold him of his own free will. Leave him be.

Simply put Anon, now is not the time. Firstly, any enchantment we make should be done on Spirit Ivory. It is a divine substance that is extremely difficult to shape; it is good then, that we have a companion who Grandmastered in eroding and shaping Divine Essence. Unfortunately, she in Nazir. Secondly, we require enchanting aids, such as a deprivation chamber. We have none, but we do have a companion who is a Grandmaster in Alchemy. Unfortunately, she too is in Nazir. I suggest we try an innovative Martial Meditation; a Meditation on Forms, incorporating Fire magic into Combat Maneuvers, with Zahak. Our telepathic bond with our son is vastly superior to a normal I project that if this meditation is successful, we'll unlock a sort of meditative DragonRider Martial trance.

A further reason why we should wait until we have Chryssa to work with our tusk.

Keep in mind, Soma does not just spew information freehandedly in the IRC. Every tidbit or projection he gives us is something that Mik would know and could conceptually grasp or estimate.

[22:35] <~Soma_QM> Thus, inscribing it upon the material from a spirit would reduce any negative side effects.
[22:35] <~Soma_QM> As for Invert+Revert+Fire on Spirit materials...
[22:35] <Rob> So what would their effect be the Firebrand enchantment?
[22:35] <Rob> That's pretty good.
[22:36] <~Soma_QM> It would probably make it more focused, less wild.
[22:36] <~Soma_QM> Like, if you carved that on your spear for instance.
[22:36] <Rob> Nature competency can be gained through meditation, and we have time.
[22:36] <~Soma_QM> On your custom spear you ordered a while back.
[22:36] <~Soma_QM> You'd need an off switch.

We do in fact. We just add a Touch rune, the ring will only activate when it's worn.

-Touch: This rune is primarily useful when it's modifying another rune. Enchantments modified by this rune will be activated whenever something touches the enchanted object. Alternatively, it may be used to create an enchantment which only affects those who touch it.

The soul is the highest form of being it is. It is divine essence from Surya itself. Attempting to refine would lead to catastrophic effects; imagine an over-enriched rod of plutonium. It'd disintegrated while unleashing massive amounts of magical radiation, destroying the user and anything around them. Water simply can't be refined. Refining puts it in a higher form; what is the higher form of water? Gas? Ice? Either way, it's mostly useless.

Surya probably has a network of servants who go send that message to anyone who does what we did, cause i imagine it's not that uncommon in the past.

to put it in perspective the gods have directly interacted with the mortal realm twice all history we know of (which we know most of).

the first is to banish Srtsi

The second was granting an entire race biological immortality

They give Zero fucks about us.

And as far as any other "powerful beings" they're all spirits, which by their very nature have forsaken the gods and care only about growing their own power
>>
>>45694251
Oh, Anon... you were autistic all along.
>>
>>45694208
Not really. The only consequences for Mik's soul take place after he dies and gets his memories and self wiped away.

Instead of getting his divine essence reset to factory default and sent to Surya, now his divine essence gets reset to factory default and tossed back into the reincarnation cycle by Pani.

Like I said, we're below the notice of Customer Service. We just get the automated voice message.

Except for the whole Herald and Child thing, but that's a) not happening in the mortal realm, but us dicking about in the void, and b) more like accidentally getting run over than any intentional action on the Child's part.

You almost can't believe you've managed this without so much as a drop of blood being spilled. Well, excluding those guards that Faris killed, but they don't really count. They weren't important. You're sure their wives and mothers would disagree with that assessment, but they're not here to give their opinions. It's a little late to start worrying about all the children you've left fatherless at this point, when they surely number in the hundreds.

Dismissing those rather gloomy thoughts, you turn your attention to Faris. “I'll want the nobleman and his two eldest sons as hostages, to ensure the Demirs don't try anything further. I'll have my father send an escort to pick them up, but I'd appreciate it if you'd hold them in the Satrap's dungeon until then.”

Faris seems quite pleased with the idea. “I'll of course need to question them before your noble father retrieves them, but I think I can agree to your request.”

You step forward, stealing an oyster so long as nobody's here to stop you. After all, they're only going to go to waste sitting here unattended. As you slurp down the contents of the shell, the inherent salinity of the oyster mixing pleasantly with subtle notes of cilantro and pepper, you finally catch sight of your reflection on a silver tray.

Lines of silver trace across the surface of your skin, outlining your veins in brilliant argent light, quite in contrast to the darkness of your skin. Your eyes glow with that same strange light, your pupils drowned out entirely by the raw power channeled through your body. All told, you look unearthly. Like a spirit in mortal form, or a creature from myth. No wonder everyone was so shocked by your appearance.

Update never ever
>>
Stealing one more oyster you call Faris' attention once more. “If you'd like, dear brother, I could deliver Nithya to your estate. It would permit me an opportunity to see my sister, and perhaps a chance to meditate without the disturbances which increasingly seem to plague my life at court.”

Your brother in law seems reluctant to abandon his daughter so soon after their reunion, but reluctantly comes to realize it's for the best. He's only going to be handling the formalities of the arrest, a task which will likely consume the next few hours of his life. “I suppose that would be prudent, Mikhael. Just...” He glances between your illuminated features and Zahak, currently occupying himself sniffing at a roast boar. “Just be careful, I suppose that's all I can ask for. You'll know my estate by the banner of Al-Misra, a crescent moon pierced by a red spear, on a black background dappled with gold. It's not far from here, just a short distance south.”

At her father's urging, Nithya reluctantly comes to join you by the seafood table. You dump nearly the entirety of a plate of fried squid into your cloak for Ricky's benefit before finally abandoning the lovingly prepared dinner to spoil and returning to your son. You haul yourself into the saddle first, helping Nithya up after. Once she's settled just in front of you, you urge Zahak skyward.

The problem is there's not really enough room in the courtyard for him to simply launch himself skyward and start flapping his wings, and the solution Zahak comes up with isn't exactly desireable. He lifts himself up on his hind legs and digs his claws into the walls of the palatial estate, shattering windows and ripping apart stone as he begins to climb his way up the walls of the courtyard. Stone is sent cascading to the ground behind them, and the wailing of the Demir patriarch can be heard even from the roof. That's probably going to be fairly expensive to repair.
(2/3)
>>
As Zahak pushes off the roof, it collapses beneath him, much to the horror of a terrified Nithya. Fortunately he'd already spread his wings, so as you're all sent tumbling forward into open space Zahak manages to struggle upwards, rather than plunging into the waters of the canal below. As your son rounds on the estate you're allowed a full view of the damage left in his wake, and it's enough to make even you wince.

True to his word, you find the Al-Misra estate only a few minutes to the south of the Demir estate. Still, despite the brevity of the flight, your niece seems to enjoy the experience of it once she gets over your initial difficulties getting airborn. Nithya seems almost stunned by this new perspective on the city of her birth, staring wide-eyed at the buildings stretched out below.

As for the Demir estate itself, the building is practically a fortress. You find it's characterized by high walls with few windows and a set of immense double doors wrought from bronze, but you see no other obvious methods of entrance or exist. There are no open air courtyards, nor gardens to enjoy. Only a vast stone dome stretching across the top of the building. You have Zahak land on a wide dock jutting from the front of the estate, scaring the living shit out of the two poor guardsmen stationed at the door.

You dismount first, and then help your niece down after. The guards relax only slightly at the sight of their employer's daughter safely returned, so focused are they on the dragon looming above her. Still, they manage to pull themselves together at least enough to get the gates open.
(3/4)
>>
On the other side of the doors is an expansive room lit primarily by a handful of oil lamps dangling from the ceiling. Incense burns before a rather elaborate statue of a god you think might be Surya. He wields a trident, and fire seems to leap to his command. It's not a depiction of Surya you're familiar with, far more humanized than you might typically expect, but recognizable none the less.

Cushions are laid out across the room, and a sofa sits against the wall. A stairwell opposite leads further into the estate, but you're not wholly certain it yould be appropriate to just traipse about without being invited in. Despite the somber exterior, you must admit the interior seems almost cozy. Screens of elaborately carved wood serve to provide a sense of separation between the rooms, while preserving an almost open format and keeping the air inside circulating.

You decide to wait in this sitting room with Zahak, who's rather too large to easily navigate his way futher into the estate. Nithya happily rushes off further in to fetch your sister, her mother. It's almost odd to think of Safiyyah as a wife and a mother, rather than simply as your older sister. Though, you suppose she's always been rather motherly. She used to take care of you and your brother whenever your father went away on some merchant venture overseas. Your mother was often too busy managing the household to see that you attended your lessons and remembered to eat, so Safiyyah took on those responsibilities instead.
(4/5)
>>
Safiyyah arrives after a few minutes delay, Nithya close behind. Her hair is shorter than you recall, but otherwise seldom little seems to have changed since the last you saw her. She smiles practically from ear to ear the moment she sees you, though her smile falters somewhat when she sees Zahak curled up amidst a bed of cushions, his wings spread out to cover nearly half the room. “Mikhael! It's been simply too long since the last time we've seen one another, and you haven't been returning my letters!”

You raise an eyebrow. “I haven't been getting your letters, Safiyyah. Were you sending them to the estate in El-Amin, or were you sending them to Master Karim?”

She cocks her head to one side, uncomprehending. “Is Master Karim the one who burned down half the Merchant's Quarter, or am I thinking of someone else?”

While you wouldn't put it past Master Karim to burn down the merchant's quarter, you don't think he's done so in your lifetime. “You're thinking of Master Kamal. Something about a disagreement regarding the price of wine, if I recall correctly.”

Safiyyah snaps her fingers. “That's right, I always get those two confused. Karim was the one that...” She pauses, glancing briefly to Nithya. “Well, had relations with his pets. I suppose I shouldn't repeat the details in present company.”

You're quick to interrupt. “Allegedly! I lived with the man for twelve years and not once did I see him do anything uncouth, by the standards of Vatis. I'm convinced that's merely a rumor spread to slander his good name.”

She does her best to conceal her grin, failing utterly. “Judging by the winged lizard taking up much of my sitting room I trust life as a Vatis has been treating you well, Mikhael? I'd heard from Father about your unbanishment, but he neglected to reveal the full extent of your adventures abroad.”

zahak is so graceful
>>
You take a seat, relaxing after a rather eventful day. “That winged lizard is named Zahak, I'll have you know, and I suppose you could say I've enjoyed myself. I've certainly expanded my knowledge of the world abroad and of the universe in general. For instance, did you know that what we think of as reality is but one of two hundred and sixteen layers of the god's creation? And two hundred and fifteen of those layers are composed of a inhopsitable void where monsters older than time itself lie in wait for any unfortunate soul foolish enough to pass through their domain.”

Safiyyah comes to sit next to you, Nithya joining her on the couch a moment later. “Well I must say, Mikhael, a bit of wandering certainly seems to have done wonders for your health. You're practically glowing. In fact, you're literally glowing.”

It only just occurs to you that you've neglected to remove your armor, that realization bringing to the forefront of your thoughts the vile itching around the holes in your spine. You can already tell peeling yourself out of this armor is going to be unpleasant.

>Best to get it over with now, and maybe afterwards you can stick around to chat with your sister. It really has been too long.

You stand, pain shooting through your legs. That's not a good sign. “Right, my apologies. This armor has some rather adverse affects upon my health.” Your helmet snaps closed with a thought, and as the needle in your neck begins to retract it rips off quite a lot of yoru skin with it. The smell of cooking fat fills the air as the helmet finally loosens, a hiss of compressed air escaping as you pull off the heavy carapace shell.

Unfortunately your cuirass seems less inclined to come off, and you're pretty sure you're still glowing. You end up needing to rot away the flesh around the spikes to free them from your spine. Only then do they retract into your armor, the sudden absensce of that overwhelming torrent of vys leaving you feeling immensely drained. Worse even than you felt after your battle against the Guardian outside the ruined temple. Perhaps it's simply because you've been wearing the Heavy Warlock Armor so much over the last few days?
>Vys Pool: (46/[46])

Your cuirass loosens, and you're able to pry it off with some minor difficulty. The moment the air hits your back you regret ever removing your armor. It's like someone's holding a torch against your flesh, the flames licking hungrily across your skin. You've barely managed to recover from the initial blossoming of pain when Safiyyah calls out behind you. “Merciful Pani, what have you been doing to yourself? Gods above, even the bone is charred black!”

Another bolt of pain shoots through you as a hand presses into your back, but it subsides a moment later. Cool water runs along raw flesh, soothing the pain and washing out the immense holes in your back. You support yourself with one hand on your older sister's shoulder as you struggle to pull off your greaves, and she has to get Nithya to help with your gauntlets and pauldrons.

(1/3)
>>
The patterns carved in your flesh are far more extensive this time than they were before. They stretch all the way around your torso, cutting across your abdomen and chest alike. They even stretch down your arms, though they stop where they meet your tattoos. Curious, that. You wonder what it is about the tattoos that prevents them from being broken, or even marred, short of being entirely obliterated.

Channeling vys seems more difficult than it ought to be, but for a Grandmaster Water Vatis your wounds are still a simple matter to repair. New flesh slowly grows to replace the scorched remnants of the old, and soon there's nothing left of the gashes except the memory of the pain they caused. Safiyyah insist that you sit down once you're healed, promising to fetch you a bit of poppy tea. You promise her you're fine, but she barely spares you a glance before insisting it will make you feel better.

She returns a few minutes later with a black laquerware teapot threaded with gold where it was once cracked, and three cups stacked neatly atop one another. She sets out the cups and fills each with the dark liquid held within. Taking a sip, you're initially assaulted by the bitterness of the poppy. However, she seems to have flavored the tea with a bit of lime and the notes of citrus do much to alleviate the rather foul taste of the tea.

Safiyyah collects her own cup before taking a seat next to you, though you must admit you're a bit uncomfortable sitting shirtless in front of your sister and her daughter. You set your cup down briefly, reaching into your cloak to retrieve a tunic and pulling it on as best you're able without standing. You're not sure you could manage standing under your own power at the moment. That done you retrieve your cup, sipping passively at its contents.
(2/3)
>>
Eventually the silence grows to be oppressive, and you find yourself compelled to shatter it. “My apologies, if I worried you. It's simply a facet of the armor. I'm not truly powerful enough to wear it safely, only powerful enough to wear it without dying. I've perhaps been relying on it too frequently as of late, and I suppose the stress has been wearing on me.” You pause to sip your tea, wincing as it hits your tongue. You're stil not quite used to the taste. “I've had a remarkably active life over the course of the last several days.”

You briefly recount the details of your adventures, adding illusions to illustrate the more exciting aspects of your time as an Aghtaki. You try to spare them the gorier details, the more underhanded actions you've had to take since your banishment, but you doubt your sister would care if she knew the full breadth of your actions over the past few months. She's always been tolerant of your eccentricities.

In the end, you cut your tale short. You're just really not feeling up to storytelling at the moment, and the tea is starting to take effect. You seem increasingly divorced from the would around you, colors taking on lives of their own and sounds reaching you distorted and strange. Your sister was right in a way, the tea certainly made you forget the pain, nausea, weakness, and anxiety. However, it also made the room spin and now you can't feel your legs. You're not entirely certain you'd call that an improvement.

Apparently noticing your increasing lack of coherence, Safiyyah gently places a hand upon your shoulder. "Mikhael, if you'd like I can have the slaves prepare a room for the night. It would be no trouble at all, in fact we'd be glad to have you stay the night."

>If she could have a room prepared, you'd be immensely grateful. You want to meditate in private.

You shake your head, standing with some difficulty under your own power. Briefly there's a sensation reminescent of a thousand pins and needles prickling across your legs, but it fades gradually. “No, if it's alright with you I think I'll stay here. I'd like to meditate with Zahak.”

Safiyyah smiles weakly. “I suppose it's all the same. Do try to get some rest though, at some point. I think it would do you good.” She rises, ushering Nithya along with her. “I'll leave you some privacy to meditate, I know how Vatis are about their rituals.”

Your sister always has been something of a worrier. You can't truly begrudge her for it. If you're being honest, it's kind of nice to be worried after and taken care of. Nithya waves shyly as her mother leads her away, and as they both slip beyond a wooden divider you're left alone in the room with Zahak.

His thoughts brush against yours, his affection soothing the deep seated sense of unease you've felt ever since you removed the armor. {What are we going to meditate on, Papa?}

Not the time Anon. We'll need enchanting materials only Chryssa can shape and a potion only Mortia can make (without charging us money).

Didn't someone give us advice to get all our magics to master then GM them one after another?

Now simply isn't the correct time Anon. To stabilize the effects of both the Inversion ring and the Firebrand, we'll need work them on Spirit Ivory. Only Chryssa can shape it. We'll also have much more success if we have Mortia brew us a sense dampening potion.

Let's make that one fire thing people were talking about, but for kicks let's also turn it into a lightsaber. Enchant up a gem with the Invert+revert+fire and create+fire(hooked to an on/off vys switch).
I have a suspicion that we won't be able to control the shape of the 'blade' so it will just spew a massive ball of plasma.
>>
>>45696083
I'm honestly considering changing my vote just because of that comment, the "Avatar project" sounds retarded, and something about you pisses me off.

Tbh we definitely ought to teach Zahak the basics of enchanting. It's pretty fundamental to understanding reality and it will help preserve some of the knowledge that Mik has gained about the universe should he meet an untimely demise.

well we wanna wait until we can do it on the spirit boar tusk.

And yes we can control the plasma it creates, that's the whole reason we're doing it. It's not even particularly hard to control, Prof can do it.
>>
>>45696114
we can use his saddle and blanket as jumping off points for enchantment as well. It will be a cool experience for him to learn how his blanket was made.

Nature Magic it is. I'll make the meditation session the next OP, so you don't have to spend too much time on it.

Gimme a second to figure out modifiers and I'll call for a roll.
>>
Rolled 1, 1, 1 = 3 (3d1)

>>45696152
>>
>>45696124
I mean control it purely with the enchantments. I don't think we can make it so it automatically makes a blade when someone flicks it on. I want this thing to work as a lightsaber even if someone with no fire magic at all turns it on.
>>
>>45696144
The combo you've been aiming for
>>
>>45696162
with the right runes im sure you could be we probably cant right now.
>>
>>45696152
We should just do both. We're not going to be chased out of the house anyway so we can take our time.
>>
>>45696079
>>45696093
>>45696112
>>45696077
>>45696063
>>45696047
There's no need to rush Anons. We need the enchantments and artifacts to be absolutely perfect. And we'll need a potion from Mortia and Chryssa to shape the ivory for rings in order to get them perfect. Just be patient.

>>45696162
Use Touch.

-Touch: This rune is primarily useful when it's modifying another rune. Enchantments modified by this rune will be activated whenever something touches the enchanted object. Alternatively, it may be used to create an enchantment which only affects those who touch it.

Have the blade be connected internally, in the hilt, to a button or protrusion on the handle. Sheathed? Enchantment off. On display? Enchantment off. Held in someone's hand? Lightsaber time.
>>
>>45696184
By trying to convince them you're just gonna make them vote to spite you.
>>
>>45696184
The problem for a non-fire vatis isn't turning it off/on, it's turning it on and having the blade be a blade instead of a fuckoffhuge ball of superheated plasma exploding right in their face.
>>
>>45696037
Beam would have been a good thing to teach Zahak
>>
>>45696203
Well it's gonna be a ring. But the thing isn't really meant to be a stable object, cause it spews plasma. Without fire magic to control it it's not gonna stop spewing it. So dont give it to anyone without fire magic.
>>
>>45696203
Ah. Then what you'd want is Transmute+Touch

-Transmute: This rune is primarily useful when it's affecting another rune. This rune turns the enchanted object into the substance of the base rune. Using the example of a flaming sword, instead of a metal sword wreathed in flame it would instead create a sword composed solely of flame. Alternatively, with the right combination of runes it can be used to turn anything which touches an enchantment into the substance of the base rune.

Granted, we'd need an actual sword and we'd have a 5 rune array on our hands, which is very much complex.

>>45696223
Nonsense. With a simple Touch Rune, it'll only activate when worn. We'll pop them on when we get into a fight.
>>
Shit, sorry. Sorta zoned out there for a second.

ROOOOOOOOOOLL 3d10+8 (+2 from Group Meditation with a Vatis, +4 from meditating with a Dragon, +2 from Vatis Training, +4 from A Terrible Thing to Waste, -4 due to Exhausted) vs DC 25 (Base 25)
>>
>>45696229
Cool, but what would we do to make it so the sword doesn't have a blade at all when it's off? I wanted something hilt-sized that wouldn't need a sheath when not in use.

It'd probably be doable to make it so the off state has a blade made of air, but then that might cause problems in niche situations.

I'll give you a +4 bonus for meditating on the differences between the connection with Zahak and the connections generated by the brooches, since that has a lot of wider implications in Nature magic and I'm a nice guy.

So you're only spending 1 vys rather than 5.
