General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear vote winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever! This is not a video game.

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

You wake up feeling rested. After last night with Robin and Clair, you’re a bit sore, but in all the best ways.

You get dressed, eat breakfast, and try to keep your nerves down. You’ve been training for a long time, and today you’re going to put it to the test against the first of the Elite Four, Cliff.

Cliff is a ground type master. From everything you’ve seen, he likes to start the match with his Hippodon and take advantage of it’s specially strong sandstorm. His sandstorm is special, and besides wearing down your Pokemon, it’ll hurt visibility and accuracy as well.

He also likes to use Dig. You’re working under the assumption that he can use Dig twice as fast as anyone else, but chooses to delay so he can use buffs underground in secret.

Hippodon, Marshstomp, Torterra, Krookodile, Flygon, Marowak, and according to rumour, a seventh one that hasn’t been seen. You might end up against that mystery Pokemon instead of the six you know about, so you’ll need to stay on your toes.

Vance rubs your shoulders. “If you try to throw a Pokeball with shoulders this stiff, you’ll pull something. Relax, champ-to-be.”

“You’ll do great.” Jeanine pats your head.

Robin nods and smiles.

Clair says nothing.

>Wait, swap Pokemon last minute
Yeah, Raistlinn for Oberon is a good idea. We really want him for Sand Veil, and if I'm remembering, Earthquake does more damage against enemies using dig. In a battle format like this, dig is so versatile that I bet the ground E4 member will be using it somehow.
>>
We specifically trained Raistlin for this. He has energy ball. Oberon has nothing.

I mean, we could swap Vlad, too. Everything Cliff has will certainly know a strong rock move. But he's really strong with two moves per turn.

A few people try not to make it obvious that they recognize you as you make your way to the PC in the lobby. This fancy hotel has everything you need. It better, for the price tag. A part of you feels almost guilty about how well off you are these days, and how you’re able to spend so freely.

The professor’s assistant handles the transfer of Raistlin for Oberon. Raistlin, for his part, thinks you’re making the logical choice and makes sure you know he’ll be available if you need him.

You absently stroll your hand over your six Pokeballs. You’ll take them all out and give them a pep talk in a minute. First though, there’s something bothering you.

You pull Clair aside. “You’re being quiet.”

She looks away. “Oh. Ha! Am I? No. What?”

You fold your arms. “Come on. What’s up? I can take it.”

Her shoulders slump. “You better mean that, she sighs. “Fine. Here goes.” She inhales. “I’ve been a gym leader a long time. I can tell when someone is going to win. that’s not a psychic thing, just...experience.”

You lean against the wall. “So... you think I’m going to lose?”

She leans her head left and right. “I think the odds are really good that you won’t make it as far as you think. The Elite Four aren’t just like gym leaders but stronger. They’re a whole other level. They’re not just dedicated trainers, but born naturals too.”

You’d be lying if you said that didn’t hurt. But you’re also thankful she’s being honest.

“Don’t get me wrong. You’re a great trainer. You’re...” she leans in close and whispers “betterthanme.” She leans back, her eyes making it clear you’re never to repeat that. “But this is your first year. Maybe you can take them in two or three or five years, but right now isn’t realistic.”
>>
>>45685524
You take it in. “Why didn't you tell me this before?”

“I thought you had a better chance before. But now I know what Cliff’s seventh Pokemon is. You’re not prepared. I don’t even think you’d believe me, but he has a weird secret weapon.”

You narrow your eyes. “How do you know? Did you read his mind?”

She looks away again. “It was an accident...mostly. Let me tell you. You can’t be too proud here. These guys are good.”

“Okay. Tell me.”

Clair blinks. “Really? I thought you’d be too proud.”

“Well, I just got pretty humbled, didn’t I?”

Clair looks away.

You lift her chin with your finger. “Sorry. I didn’t mean for it to come out like that. I’m glad you were honest with me.” You share a nice moment before she suddenly bats it away.

“Pfft, like I care.” She wipes back a tiny bit of moisture from her eye. “So this is going to sound crazy, but you need to take it seriously.”

You nod. Whatever this is, it must be incredibly strong. Maybe it’s a legendary, or a Pokemon not discovered yet!

“Okay. It’s... a Nincada.”

“A...what?” You clear your ears.

“I told you! But you need to be serious. I’m not joking.”

You sit down at the PC to process this, then pull up a picture of a Nincada. A tiny little, completely unthreatening bug type. Completely unnoteworthy except for being on the weak end of the spectrum. It’s cute and small. Yup. That’s what you thought you remembered it was.

Clair sits beside you “I know how it sounds, but it’s no normal sized Nincada. It’s-”

“Huge?”

“No. Tiny. A dwarf.”

“A dwarf Nincada?” You think about it. You know that size isn’t a good indicator for power when it comes to Pokemon sometimes.

“He volunteers at a shelter for Pokemon. I guess he got attached, and he’s trained it to be able to battle. It’s fast, nearly impossible to hit, and what he considers to be his perfect Pokemon in case he’s outmatched in power. Worst of all, it’s part bug type,” she shudders. Her chest and twintails shake.

Huh. “Well. You were right. I wasn't expecting that.”

You thank her, then go to the back of the hotel building and take out your Pokemon.

"No matter what happens or who we face, I believe in all of you. I know how hard you have worked to get here so thank you all. You are the best friends I could have ever asked for. Win or lose that's never going to change. So let’s get out there and show Cliff what we are made of!"

Aria, Levi, Vlad, Oberon, Trunks, and Destiny jump and roar and give support. They’re pumped.

In the excitement, Vlad swoops at Destiny as a joke. But Oberon sees it and takes it as an offense against dragon types. He swipes at Vlad, but Vlad’s already in the air. Levi growls at Oberon. He’s the new guy, he doesn’t know how it works.

Trunks spooks Aria, who leaps into the air and Vlad bounces off of her by accident.

Destiny leaps into your arms to show you that she’s good and not a part of this tomfoolery. She nuzzles against you and bubbles. She glares at Vlad, who lays on the ground, looking up at the disapproving Oberon

Normally you wouldn’t worry about this sort of thing. You’ve always given them a lot of freedom.

Hey Gobble, I just got done reading the archives over the last few days, and I just wanted to say thanks!
>>
>>45687399
All of them in just a few days? Must be a quick reader anon.
>>
You take time to sort out every issue. You remind Vlad to keep his horseplay to a minimum, explain to Oberon that he just likes to tease Destiny, you remind Destiny not to be a kiss-ass, you tell Levi that Oberon is new but still a valued, equal member, you tell Trunks not to spook teammates before a big match and also to keep it to a tasteful amount, and you end up telling Aria not to rub it in to anyone that got a talking to.

Your team is now focused and have no current major issues distracting them.

You and your crew head over to the arena. There’s a huge crowd, and even some people sporting signs with support for you or Cliff. You see some people with pictures of your Pokemon, and even Sneasel.

“Kat!”

You look up. It’s the royal family! Guards flank them on each side, but they’re still interacting with the crowd. The prince is hitting on some girls. You can tell they’re not that into him, but he’s a prince, so they’re not walking away either.

Beatrix runs up as quick as she can with that dress. “Kat! You’re going to cream him!”

The king coughs. “Beatrix, dear. Kat’s running late. She can’t stay to chat.”

You glance up at the digital clock. “He’s right. Sorry!” You pat her head. You have to stop yourself from doing it too roughly. She looks really well made up, and you’re not sure if you’re breaking fancy-people decorum.

You dash ahead when suddenly a figure leaps from the side. Vance catches it and it stops before it’s able to land on you.

It’s Sera!

She kicks and struggles to get free. She’s almost able to do it too, but her fancy dress, tiara, and other accessories give Vance the advantage. The dress rips a little.

“Uhh, sorry,” Vance lowers the princess that he’s holding by the scruff.

She hugs you, then Robin. “You both look most gracious.” She overly enunciates each word.

“Kat. The time,” Jeanine reminds you.

She’s right. “Sorry, Sera. We’ll have to catch up after, okay?”

She takes a wide stance and rips off the sleeves. “We shall! I very much look forward to our carnal reunion!”

You’re super glad that nobody else seems to have heard that as you run to the battle area. The security guard clears you and stops your friends.

Clair, Robin, Jeanine, and Vance wish you luck. You’re too tense to really keep track of all the details.

Cliff is there, waiting right before the open doorway that leads into the stadium.

“Tsk tsk,” he says without looking. “Late to an Elite Four battle. Not very respectful.”

“I’m really sorry,” you bow. Are you supposed to bow? “I know there’s no excuse. I mean, ‘ve had almost two weeks to get ready. I-”

“You what?” He plays with the straw in his mouth. He seems like a much different person than the chill guy you remember.

“I.. I’m just really sorry.”

He keeps staring. As the seconds tick by, you’re starting to go from genuinely being sorry to getting a little annoyed.

“Good luck,” you try to break the silence and offer a hand.

He stares at it for a second, and then he bursts into laughter. “I’m just joshing you.” He flicks some straw from his mouth. “I’ve been looking forward to this match. My Pokemon are sure excited too,” he pats his belt. “I don’t mind waiting. You don’t look like you did it on purpose, anyway,” he points to your messy hair.

You quickly fix it as best you can, then straighten out your shirt. Oh man. You probably look like a mess. You should have worn something more formal. There are a lot of cameras out there.

He pats you on the back. “You know, you’re the first challenger to ever wish me luck. I like your vibe. I think you really get what this is all about.” It's only after he says that that you notice he's wearing sandals and an improperly buttoned shirt.

You both walk out together. The crowd explodes. The announcers announce. The ref’s lead you both to your spots.

And the timer ticks down. Your match is starting.

You reach for your Pokeballs instead of waiting to see what CLiff is going to do.

From your research, he mostly uses Hippodon to start with. But you know that’s no guarantee.

“And in a surprise move, it seems like the challenger is going to throw at the same time!”

Hippodon appears and whips up a sandstorm. He huffs and the sand around his face clears out in a puff.

Your Garchomp, Oberon, bows gracefully to his opponent.

“And in a surprise, a dragon type Pokemon!”

“Garchomp’s are also part ground, Chip. I think what we’re seeing here is a strategy of fighting fire with fire.”

Your visibility is cut pretty badly. You can only see your opponents outline. No details.

The flags drop and Hippodon begins to charge.

“Double Team, Oberon!”

Oberon quickly uses the move. Just as he creates several illusionary doubles, the Hippodon charges in using Ice Fang.

Hippodon misses and stumbles. It’s mouth is still open and it inhales a chunk of ice.

“Looks like Hippodon is having a coughing fit.”

This is your chance! Only seconds in and you have a major advantage.

Cheap, yes. Also hilarious.
>>
>>45690051
We should save that for when it digs underground so we can do double the damage. Oberon's faster than him so we need to do it the turn after he digs. He's also stunned this round, I think?
>>
Fun fact I found when I looked up Dragon Rush: it has perfect accuracy and does double damage against any enemy that uses minimize. Could be useful against a particularly dodgy and small Nincada? Also might be meta-gaming a lot though.
>>
>>45690082
Comes from playing Chess.

All well and good to predict your opponent's moves, but if you can force them to do something, you control the game and that makes winning so much easier.

Hippodon moves to do something, but Oberon plows into him with Dragon Rush.

“Oh! And it’s a critical hit!”

Hippodon takes the blow hard and skids along the surface of the arena ground. He flinches and misses his chance to make a move.

“A surprising upset! We’re very early into the match and the challenger is dominating!”

“You know, Chip, I haven’t seen an Elite Four match like this since the current champion.”

“There’s still plenty of chances for things to turn around! What an exciting time to be a fan!”

Oberon is neither in a rush, nor being casual. He just shifts his weight like a predator, waiting for the pack leader to move so that he can pounce again. The sandstorm cloaks them both.

Hippodon gets up. He’s got incredible defensive power. You notice that it’s back is to the small pond.

“Oberon! Push it into the water!”

Oberon let’s himself drop just a little lower, then dashes at Hippodon with amazing speed. A row of sand forms a cone in his path and he connects in a burst. Hippodon tries to push back, but Oberon just has too much momentum.

You’re sure that if you were elss lucky, Hippodon would win a test of direct strength. But Oberon has the flow on his side and he’s using it for all it’s worth.

Hippodon’s footing is lost and Oberon is able to toss him into the pond. There’s a loud, heavy splash.

“Taking advantage of the terrain, the challenger has dunked Hippodon!”

“That’s right, Chip. It seems like Cliff isn’t too worried, though. What’s he got up his sleeve?”

Cliff, with both hands in his pockets and a straw sticking out of his mouth, stomps the ground several times in a distinct beat.

He’s up to something. Is he going to Dig? Is he going to use a move like Stockpile? Does he have something else in mind? Will being soaked loosen its defenses and slow it down enough to make a difference?

If you use Earthquake and Hippodon is still underwater, the water itself will absorb most of the shockwaves and it’ll be weakened. If he is using Dig though, you’ll do massive damage.

“Earthquake! Let’s go!”

Oberon floats into the right stance, draws a quick line in the sand with his wing, and brings all his power to bear onto the earth.

Cracks run through the ground like lightning bolts. The ground jags into pieces and the force of the air disrupts the Sandstorm.

A silence rolls over the stadium, then Hippodon’s leg raises from under the ground. Then his other. He pulls himself out, then promptly faints.

“Unbelievable! Hail to the king!”

“Hippodon’s defensive power is among the best of the Elite Four, beaten out only by-”

“Let’s save some surprises for our audience, Chip.”

The ground cheers. It should be deafening, but it’s actually not as thunderous as the move Oberon just pulled a second ago, so it doesn’t seem so loud now.

Oberon gives his foe a polite nod.

Cliff spits out his straw and takes his hands out of his pocket. He looks impressed and happy. He whispers something to Hippodon’s Pokeball, then throws out another.

Swampert.

You remember that Swampert was surprisingly less strong than Hippodon. At least, when it comes to defenses. It might pack a punch.

“Good job, Oberon! Take a rest. Trunks! Come on out!”

While you’re swapping Pokemon, Swampert unleashes Avalanche!

The sharp ice begins to fall down at Trunks as he enters the field.

He glances back at you. From your training before, you can use his special blocking move as a reaction. But if you use it here, then the secret is out of the bag. If he uses it now, it’ll take a short while before it’s ready again.

Trunks is weak to Ice moves, but he’s also got a lot of moves that allow him to regain his health.

It's -4 priority nigga, we have a healing move that's 4x effective against him. Shut the fuck up.

Do you people actually know Pokemon? This won't do shit, it's a non stab move against a pokemon that can heal itself easily, you're revealing a trump card for no fucking reason.
>>
>>45693332
>take hit
>>
And using it won, fuck me three ways from sunday this player base is retarded.
>>
You nod. That’s all Trunks needs.

He kicks up the blocker and is sheltered from the onslaught of ice.

“Amazing! What was that move?”

“Was that substitute? Can we can a slow-mo replay? Whatever it was, Trevenant managed to use it almost instantly and avoid a heavy, super-effective blow!”

Cliff tries to assess what happened. He looks ecstatic and serious at the same time. Swampert furrows it’s brow. Stopping its attack like that is an insult!

Cliff yellows out a command and points. Swampert moves to attack again.

You won’t be able to use that move to block again for a little while.

It's a super-effective move by a pokemon that put pretty much all its points in offense. Healing is irrelevant.

Did we ever decide on a name for the special move?
I dig Tombstone for a ghosty theme
>>
>>45693577
>>Confuse Ray

Normally I loathe this move, but in a case like this, it might actually pay off for once.
>>
Well, Cliff is confused at the moment. He might not try to do any big flashy attacks until he knows more about how the shadow block thing works.

We just have to keep pressure on and keep him from getting his balance really.

Swampert keeps it’s distance. You’ve shown them something they’ve never seen before, and now they’re being cautious.

Swampert’s fast. At least, fast for his species. You notice he’s really got some weight in those muscles. It makes sense. He’s attack focused. But he doesn't use an offensive move this time. He uses Stealth Rock. Cliff must figure that this is the safe bet until he can get a better handle on that blocking move.

Trunks cackles and fires off a Confuse Ray. It lands, but it wasn’t an impressive shot.

“A cautious approach from both sides.”

“That’s right, Chip. Given the surprises we’ve seen so far, that’s no surprise.”

“Indeed!”

Swampert wavers in confusion. You’re unsure how long that’ll last, or if Cliff has a good counter to it.

You might have some time while he’s assessing the situation. Either that, or he’ll buff himself. Either way, he seems like he’s keeping on the defensive for now.

But that’s Cliff’s style. A lot of his KO’s are from single moves once his chance presents itself.

>Confuse Ray again! He might switch or get rid of it
>Astonish, try to flinch if it’s using Avalanche
>Growth, get strong!
