You enter the city and have a procession following you to the palace as you enter Hoogstrad. The people, much better looking than when you freed them a few days ago, gather around and cheer you and your guard as you dismount and ascend the steps, Ralero in tow. With her voice so recently in your mind, you can only imagine what is waiting for you inside the Palace. Your Royal Guard push the door open and allow you to walk in first.

The palace's foyer, the seat to be held by the Count, or in this case Countess, at the other side of the great hall. Activity is bustling in this room as various attendants and persons of interests run back and forth. In the middle of the room is Vella, dressed in the same blue garments as the night she interrupted you in La Faresse. However, she doesn't seem to take notice of you as she quickly writes on page after page, handing out orders and giving commands. She is flanked by several large guards wearing the crest of Essland on their shields and tunics. You step forward and one of your guards loudly thunders, "All hail, the King of Vastov, King Valorian!"

All activity stops and all eyes turn to face you as you step across the stone floor, flanked by your guards. As you pass everyone drops to their knees and lower their head. You eventually stand before Vella, who rises from her seat and cursties. She turns her head up and smiles, locking eyes with you. "Hail, sire. I hope that you've found my work acceptable?"

>A) You've done well, Vella
>B) There is much to be done
>C) Be dismissive

"I am pleased with your work, Vella, but there is still much work to be done." You say and walk past her, taking the main seat and gesturing for everyone to stand up and resume their normal activities. Vella happily takes the seat next to you and leans her should against you. Ralero takes up his position at your left hand and clears his throat as your procession begins to move your belongings into the rooms and your Guards take up their positions nearest to you.

"Your Majesty," the thin man says as he leans over, "As today is Newday, your men are ready to receive your orders. I have left the last orders you gave, but we must send word to your new hirelings. Additionally, with the imprisonment of Count Piotr we have discovered much that he has hidden. There are several new work crews ready to begin construction immediately. Additionally, your Architects have produced several new plans that we can begin work on presently." He offers you his ledger and a glance at work available.

[Great Market, Church of Thusk, and Den of Wolves will be built]

"Ralero, I want the order put out for the Den to be rebuilt." His eyes widen a bit, remembering as you do the tales of the fear those men struck into the lawless very well from his readings, "As you wish sire." You nod and continue, "Additionally, it is time we take advantage of our natural position and become a trading center. I want a grand market to be constructed in Cernorian. Additionally, a Church to Thusk should be built." He nods and writes your orders down. "Of course, sire, it will be done." Vella nearly purrs like a cat as she leans over, "Oh, King Valorian, how dangerous! Those men are quite dangerous under an unsure hand." You smile thinly at her doting words and nod, "I can handle it," you assure her.

Your aide clears his throat, "Yes, well, many of your agents are waiting for orders.

"As you wish, sire. I will make my way to home, then. I bid you the best and will see you again on Fourthday." He bows to you and carries your orders with him, leaving you and Vella in relative isolation.

The demure woman catches your eye immediately and smiles at you, "King Valorian, have you forgotten about my original offer so soon? You needed only defeat those Raiders who plagued your lands and worship me, and I will give you greatness." She traces her finger up and down the side of your right hand, giving a soft smile.

"What do you say? I can make a very useful ally, and an even more useful Queen." Your eyes raise at the concept. She is beautiful, that is to be sure. However, you have your reservations about this mysterious woman.

"The offer, as always, is very kind, Vella. However, that is not a very appropriate question to ask your liege lord, or to even hint towards." She laughs, not dissuaded unduly, leaning back in her chair and breaking away from contact with you. You breathe in and gather your thoughts, realizing that you've never actually seen proof of her magical abilities other than speaking to your mind, certainly nothing befitting of the title of a Goddess. You put that aside, however, as a doctor sprints into the room, exhausted from the run.

"Countess! Your Majesty!" The man says, bowing hastily as he hunches over and gasps, catching his breath before standing, "The Earthfolk, the prisoner in the dungeon, has awakened. He's barely able to move, but he can speak, he requests to speak to his savior!" You stand up and your Guards quickly take your side as you move with haste towards the doctor's chamber.

On the table is what looks like a pile of rocks, but you recognize as the Earthfolk you saved. Its mass slowly rises and falls with its breath as you walk around to look it in the eyes. Dark green eyes that brighten and darken with each breath meet your eyes as a deep and rumbling voice emerges from its stony lips.

"So....it is you that I must thank for my life. I know not your name, but from the metal worn on your head, I am to assume you are the King. You have my eternal thanks, human King." You nod your head politely and tell the creature that it was only proper. With the aid of a pair of mages the Earthfolk is heaved into a sitting position. It stands no higher than four feet in total height, but it is nearly four feet across in its broad stony shoulders.

"It is our tradition to repay such great acts of kindness with a blessing, mortal King. What can I give you?"

"Very well, but you must return it." He nods, "I promise." One of your Royal Guards passes the cloth-wrapped spear to you, which you remove and press into the hands of the Earthfolk. He closes his eyes and breathes slowly, holding it for nearly a minute before returning it and nodding.

"Mortal King, this is a great and ancient creation. You are very fortunate to hold it." You nod and thank him. He then breathes slower as a mage repairs a patch of cracked stone where his golden blood began seeping out again, closing it as he slowly opens his eyes.

"As we accorded, I will tell you what you wish. Ask of me a single question. Then, I will create a gift for you, a great work of earth and stone."

"What happened to your people?" He nods his head, "It is a very sad tale. Our kind was hunted to extinction long ago by the savage dagger-eared creatures called the Elves. They came into our jungle homes and conquered our temples and towns, hunted us for sport, and drove us here. The last of my people died five years ago, and I am all that is left."

You silently appreciate the fact that Thorn isn't here to be a part of this, as you nod and offer him your condolences. He nods and speaks again, "Now, as for your gift, I offer the following."

He raises his hand and three small figures of stone appear on the table he's resting on.

"I can turn your castle into a mighty bastion, nearly impregnable by any enemy attack, so strong are its walls and tall are its towers." He indicates the second structure. "I can restore the fallen Tower of Magic in your land back to its original glory instantly." Finally he points to the last structure, a massive beacon of stone. "Alternatively, I can create a unique structure that will grant your sorcerers access to the Whispers of Stone and teach them to become one with the element of my people."

He nods and stands on his feet, appearing much the healthier than he was when you first saw him today. "I will have it finished by the morning. And then, I will depart." You thank him for his offer and he exchanges it with you for both his life and the spear.

You return to the great hall where Vella flops into the chair next to the Throne and asks, "So, Valorian, what are you going to do about the Order? I have heard interesting things about them bearing down on your north. What's more to the point, I have heard that they have just finished a great Tournament ground where they intend to host a challenge for the mightiest warrior in these lands. The winner, of course, receives great honor, wealth, and most importantly, the blessing of the Masters. A wish from them." Your ears perk up at her mention of the tournament, not for yourself, but then again, perhaps, but the prizes do sound interesting.

"When will this be held?" She rubs her chin idly and bats her eyes, "I'll tell you if my make me the Countess." Your face falls into a frown at the mention of becoming officially a Countess, but you return to a neutral expression quickly. She has worked hard to better this place, from a quick glance, but you can't be certain of her loyalties.

"I don't think it'll be that easy, Vella. I can find the information out myself. You'll have to prove your worth to me." She pouts and stands up, walking close to you and pressing herself against you, "Maybe....I can show you my worth?" She blinks, locking eyes with you as she flutters her lashes.

You step back and when she attempts to draw close one of your Royal Guard steps forward and interposes himself between the two of you, just a bit. She laughs, "Fine, fine, if you aren't interested in a woman like me, perhaps I can be more useful in a practical sense."

She steps to the nearby window and points at the distant coast. "Now that the Centaurs have sworn their allegiance to you, I assume you'll want to run trade and supplies between here and Khazidor via the Centaur Lands?" You nod, and she continues, "Well, a dock would be useful, but more than that, so would ships, I'm sure. Such craft takes months to prepare and boats are extremely costly. If I give you a trading navy, and some war ships to protect it, as well as complete the Locative Portal in Alesvi, and the promise that you'll consider my...." she pauses and brushes her dress smooth and taut against her legs and hips before smiling at you, "other assets in the future."

"No, thank you, Vella. I will make this work on my own." She laughs sardonically and heads out of the room, leaving you with your guards. You are given a moment of peace and eventually gather news of what is happening in Hoogstrad.

Ever since you took the place back over, and Vella started giving orders, the city has exploded into activity. Houses were given to people, jobs were reassigned, and the farms started immediately to regenerate the burned land. Under her touch, in a mere three days, miles of farmland have turned from ashen fields to tilled and ready to be planted. You are certain that magic had a hand in this.

The local steward shows you all of the actions that she has ordered and while the vast majority of them check out, a few of them are suspicious. One of the demands for her chamber was to install a frankly massive balcony and face the sea. The second strange one was the emphasis on the digging in the Maw.

The final action that draws suspicion, however, is the largest. Vella has been frankly madly tearing apart any missives and letters left over from the Raider's time. She has ordered all paper in the county with in upon it to be burned and all written orders from before you defeated the Raiders to be destroyed. The steward tells you that she wanted him to not record it, but he felt his loyalty lied with you, and not with his Count. You thank him for his actions and continue reading.

Your reading takes you well into the night, she has been extremely busy, and sleeps very rarely. She's a strange woman, that is for sure. You ask the steward about her habits, but he tells you that when she's not giving out orders she's up in her chambers. It would be interesting to investigate further, however, the trial of Count Piotr should be convening within the next few days, perhaps returning home to prepare would be worth it?

You call for your Guards, sending some to investigate the castle for anything odd and some to the castle, the rest fall in around you as you make your way up the stairs and stand outside of Vella's chambers. You call out, "Vella, I am entering." With that you throw the door open and take in the room. She is sitting at a small desk and reading. The massive window, as described, looms out, giving the distant view of the sea to the inhabitants of the room. She smiles up at you, "Oh, sire, how very forward of you to enter a lady's chambers without permission. What if I had been changing?" You choose to ignore her baiting and instead ask her directly, "Why have you been burning the papers from before I took this place? What are you hiding?"

She smiles and laughs, standing up and closing the book, "Oh King Valorian, you misunderstand me!" She laughs, charmingly, and you can feel the tension of your Guards growing as you hold the handle of your spear more firmly. "Those pages were plastered with vile horrible deeds of the Raiders leadership, and they were a painful reminder of the occupation here for the people. Of course, I copied them down into a book somewhere so that the records still existed." She indicates towards a large leatherbound tome on her dresser. "I don't want to deny you of any information, of course. I'm your ally."

The young woman walks to the balcony and throws open the windows dramatically and urges you to come out with her. You hesitantly agree, keeping your distance from her slightly, which causes her to laugh more. "What do I have to do to show you that I am a friend and an ally?"
