No matter how long you stare at the corpse, you can't find anything that could prove that it isn't you. No matter how much your sharp eyes look for that one discrepancy that could separate you from the dead man bleeding on the floor, you can't see it.

Just what is going on? You don't want to keep staring at it, but a sinking feeling is forcing you to hold your gaze.

There has to be something...

Something...!

The only differences you find, ones that you stumble upon over and over in the vain attempts to spot something important, are menial: different clothes, scrapes and bruises, the slightly longer hair, thinner musculature... This person may have lead a lifestyle different from that of a Shinigami, but even so, the more you examine him, the firmer your initial conclusion becomes.

This is you.

Without a doubt, you were killed here last night.

You never knew that it could be so hard to believe factual evidence. But how? No, rather, why? Is this Shingen's work? He couldn't find you directly, so he used a body double to issue a threat? No, that's ridiculous. Perfect body doubles can't exist. There are no two people identical to one another down to the last bone. To add to that, there was too little time to organize such a feint. And more than that, this person is truly dead. If this was an intimidation maneuver, they wouldn't have actually killed this man.

Could this person be your twin, and this occurrence completely coincidental? It's common for families to be separated in Soul Society after their death, so could this be your brother from the time you were alive? The odds of such a thing happening are maybe just one meager step short of absolutely impossible.

Is making corpses like these an ability of Shingen's? Of one of his subordinates? Allies? That seems much more probable...

Tthat's probably the solution, so why... why is your heart still beating so wildly?

(1/2)
>>
>>45797471
...There's no more time to think about this here. You've spent too much time examining the body already. At the very least, you shouldn't be seen right next to this corpse.

Unwilling to take any chances at bumping into the inn's clientele, you jump out of the window.

You need to... continue the mission. Shingen must be thinking that he got you, so you should use that advantage and keep an eye on him until the reinforcements arrive.

You don't want to talk to anyone about this. You wish you could just remove any traces of that corpse, but doing that would attract too much attention. ...Perhaps it really might be for the best if you just let it drop.

...

Well that's tricky, since we might have the element of surprise with Shingen thinking he killed us. Though we probably ceded that advantage earlier.

If we do do that, I think >>45797525
Is right and we'd need a disguise. But I don't know what we can scrounge up under these conditions.
>>
Given that this was an inn, and the retired shinigami whose house we bought never mentioned knowing anyone who looked just like us, I'm pretty sure our doppelganger is from out of town, so interrogating the town might not work. Or at least, should be restricted to the staff.

>>Ask the locals about the murder and the victim.

So we were created in a jar by that nutjob?

Damnit you guys, way to blow our stealth advantage. You're getting too impulsive.

We don't even know if Shingen was the guy we're looking for. Whoever killed our copy definitely is. It's worth investigating immediately.

That guy we introduced to our mom
>>
>>45798011
Oh, in that case then maybe.
>>
>>45797996
I mean, even in the unlikely case that Shingen isn't behind all this, we'd still be tipping off whoever killed our clone that the one with a zanpakuto is still out there.
>>
>>45798038
Which still means we'll locate and identify the killer.
>>
So what stat did we pick in the last thread? Spi?
>>
>>45798081
Agility, for some odd reason
>>
>>45798058
Is that really a good thing? Mushroom pretty much said only one of our Zanpakuto used in a specific way against Shingen would let us beat him, and we don't know what that is yet. And if it isn't Shingen we know even less. Our biggest advantages are shunpo and kido, both of which make us better suited to be the ambusher, and not the ambushed.
>>
>>45798175
Is it not the shield zanpakuto?
>>
>>45798205
It might be, but as pointed out last thread, Shingen might not be dumb enough to directly attack a magic shield since he's not a hollow.
>>
>>45798244
What if we invoked it before he could stop his blitz attack? Or if line of sight was obstructed but he was willing to go in blind knowing where we are. Like via fog
>>
>>45798351
That still requies us to be better than we are right now
>>
>>45798430
And hoping for fog in general isn't really a winning plan.

You decide to ask around. It would be troublesome if people noticed the eerie similarity between you and the victim, so you make a bit of a disguise for yourself, loaning some clothes and makeup from Gorou and his wife.

The victim's name was Arata. His buddies state that he was a fun but irresponsible guy. He's never told much about himself. He didn't seem to have a family or even his own house. He was a drunk who scraped by with loans and menial jobs, and then spent all of his money on alcohol. Some people believe that he was a thief, but there was no proof. His friends don't recall anyone who could hate Arata enough to murder him.

The inn residents report hearing noises during the night of the crime, but they ceased quickly. It sounded like two people ran into the room, and then, after a 'pop', someone fell. Arata had a bit of a reputation for stupid antics at his the inn, so people ignored it. Back on the crime scene, when the body was first discovered in the morning, the window was open. That must be how the killer escaped. If it really was Shingen, then a drop from the second story wouldn't have fazed him.

A commotion at that same inn interrupts your investigation. A pair of thugs, no doubt from the Matsu dojo, is harassing the elderly owner and her customers about the victim. Perhaps Shingen is having suspicions about your death and is making his lackeys perform an investigation of his own.

It was dark, so you doubt the differences in your appearances have tipped him off to that fact. It seems more likely that Arata's lack of a struggle was what gave his real identity away.

You think you've found out just about all you can here. It's a risk, but perhaps you could delay their investigation just a little bit.

You slip away from the inn, leaving the shouting behind. You return to your room and begin to wait for reinforcements, trying to think of a way to keep an eye on Shingen without drawing attention to yourself. But that corpse... it's making it difficult to focus. You know that you won't make progress on it as things currently stand, no matter how much time you spend pondering, but...

The thought of it alone makes your heart pound and has you dripping with sweat. You know that this isn't a rational reaction on your part, and yet that realization isn't helping you calm down. For someone who claims to not feel anything, this is quite the contradiction. But no... this is different from what you're numb to. This is instinct. A primal fear of death.

For as long as you've lived, that man could have walked into your house and assumed your life. It's a death like any other, isn't it? Thinking logically, it seems like a strange perspective. There is no way that could have realistically happened, right? Everyone would have noticed the sudden change in your behavior. They'd reject the stranger immediately, wouldn't they?

...But even if they did notice, why would they pick the unfeeling sociopath over someone who could feel emotions like a human being? Wouldn't they simply misinterpret it as you having miraculously grown accustomed to emotions? Would your mother be happier that way?

Just who are you? Just who is Tsukuda Ryouta? If you can be replaced so easily, does that even make you a person?

No... no, you need to calm down. This is pointless to think about. That doppelganger is dead. There aren't any more. There won't be any more. The threat has passed.

With those thoughts frantically twirling in your mind, your heart gradually slows its wild beating. You need to focus on the real threat here. On Matsu Shingen.

Only a few hours pass before you hear a commotion downstairs. This isn't good. It seems that you can't stay at this inn anymore. Escaping the thugs, even unnoticed, is simple enough. Without their leader around, Shingen's subordinates don't stand a chance of catching you.

But the fact that things are turning out this way is a bad development. Shingen going into hiding was a concern at first, but it seems that the situation has been turned right around - he's going on the offensive. You can hide for a while, and even if discovered, you could probably defend yourself successfully even against superior numbers, but only if Shingen isn't with them. And the more confident they feel about finding you, the more likely it is that the boss will show up.

You've changed inns, but you don't know how long that will last you. Bribes might not work too well - the Matsu dojo is rather feared, and you suspect that the people will give in to coercion no matter the sum you offer. You're unfamiliar with the District, but with luck, it should still be possible to keep yourself hidden around here until the reinforcements arrive.

Date Gorou might be able to hide you. He may not be a Shinigami anymore, but he used to be a high-ranking officer in his Division. He won't give in to coercion easily. But that puts him in danger. If something were to give your presence away, the Matsu thugs wouldn't let him off easy.

Another option is to go on the offensive yourself. The leader is the main problem. Without Shingen, his men shouldn't be able to do anything, not with a Shinigami around. But the risks speak for themselves; that brute is most certainly not to be underestimated in combat.

...

>Continue hiding around the District.
>Ask Date Gorou to hide you for a while.
>Report the situation to HQ and go on the offensive.
>Other. (Write-in.)
>>
>>45799817
Eh, Ryouta needs some self esteem. I think most of the people he's met would prefer the way he acts to Arata being a layabout.
>>
>>45799872
>Report the situation to HQ and go on the offensive.
>>
>>45799872
So how did Gorou stop being a shinigami anyway? I don't suppose there's anything we can do from here to undo it as an emergency is there? Like you'd think that there would be a way to restore shinigami to active duty in case of war at least.
>>
>>45799872
>Report the situation to HQ and go on the offensive
>>
Part of the problem is that with Shingen, he's seen us use the two swords release. If we do a different one later, we need to kill him.
>>
>>45799872
>Report the situation to HQ and go on the offensive.
Hado 31 and Haname might be our best bet here. Or the crossbow.
>>
>>45800038
Hadou 31 might work if he heals like a hollow, but he might actually be stitching his wounds closed with Ransotengai.
>>
So when we say "go on the offensive" what does that mean? Keep beating up the gang members in ambushes until Shingen finds us or they tell us where Shingen is?

>>45799872

So... Do we have a plan, or what? Like it's tricky to use kido against a hollow without the element of surprise, and Shingen is smarter than most hollows. I mean I guess we're probably a lot faster than him, but I'm not seeing much strategy.
>>
>>45800280
>complain about the strategy
>makes no strategy of his own
Clearly we need to disable his regen and hit him from range or use Haname at the perfect moment to kill him with his own strength. Melee range is pretty risky because he could end us with one good hit. We could also try to finish him in one strike from stealth but we'll see what the situation is first.
>>
>>45800800

You report the inevitability of the confrontation to HQ. Making the first move will at least grant you an advantage. It takes some time before the response arrives. Instead of orders, you receive instructions.

"You are free to engage if you find it necessary, however, keep the following in mind:

High Speed Regeneration is a Hollow trait, so there can be little doubt about it - your enemy is a Quincy who has escaped from our facilities during the incident forty years ago. However, Hollowification alone is not what makes him an unusual opponent. The Quincy need a certain component in order to utilize their traditional abilities, and that component was confiscated and destroyed upon his initial capture. There is one thing that you can be certain of - this Quincy is not a long-range combatant. He is simply unable to form his bow without the cross in his possession, and the fact that you're still alive despite retreating confirms his lack of aptitude at long range.

His strong musculature indicates an inclination towards close combat. While this is a highly unorthodox fighting style in regards to the Quincy, its danger should not be underestimated. It may not be as deadly as their traditional methods, but desperation might have concocted some unpredictable and dangerous techniques.

Even with the description you've provided, we unfortunately are not able to identify the subject. The appearance of most of Kurotsuchi Mayuri's victims has changed drastically over the course of his experiments.

(1/2)
>>
>>45801325
Of course, the man's Hollow-like traits make me unable to place sufficient confidence in any of the conjectures I have made so far in regards to his capabilities, so please exercise caution. There is, however, one scenario that has a high probability of occurring - should Matsu Shingen experience too much stress, his Hollow traits might go out of control. The effects of that are unpredictable. A transformation into a full-blown Hollow is not out of the question. In the case of such an event, follow standard protocol and engage from stealth and retreat if that is impossible.

However you choose to go about engaging Matsu Shingen, you should make sure that he dies as quickly as possible. We have no need for him alive, and the reinforcements were sent with that in mind."

That doesn't seem like something Urahara wrote, but him and you are not the only people in the Division who are aware of what Mayuri's experiments entailed. Perhaps the Captain isn't around right now; it might be a good thing that you didn't report about the doppelganger.

The fact that Shingen seems inept at ranged combat is highly valuable intel. Now all that remains is finding the man in question.

...

He's not even trying to hide. You manage to find him without even needing to confront any of his henchmen.

Matsu Shingen stands in front of some kind of shop, surrounded by a dozen of his subordinates, his muscular torso hidden underneath leather armor. It seems to serve a mainly decorative purpose; he must realize that your Zanpakuto won't be stopped by something like that. A sword of his own is strapped to his back and two knives are tied to his right thigh. Arms folded, the leader quietly awaits something, his mad eyes, wide as ever, furiously glaring at the wooden shop.

(1/2)
>>
>>45801215
Well if we use Shunpo our agility is B rank which is actually pretty badass. Might be useful for this fight.
>>
>>45801472
It seems that a civilian decided to stand up to them, so the leader himself arrived, perhaps to set an example. Some of the men by his side are carrying yet unlit torches. A crowd has gathered to observe, but they're keeping a wary distance from the gang members. It'll be hard to get to Shingen unnoticed, not with his thugs hovering so closely around him. A sneak attack would be very risky... but not impossible.

Flinging powerful Hado around might endanger the civilians, but aside from that, it is perfectly viable. You are certain that you won't be spotted if you keep yourself hidden in the crowd for the duration of the incantation.

...

Assuming the instructions were correct, Shingen should have no skill at long range. With sufficient distance, taking him out should be trivial. The buildings around here aren't particularly high, but they will do. You make your way out of the crowd and climb up to the second story of someone's house. The crowd's eyes are peeled to the now-lit torches.

"Fling, Ishiken."

Your blank sword warps and glows, assuming the shape of a crossbow. There is no need to aim this weapon.

It's a straight shot. You don't need to come up with an elaborate trajectory for the projectile.

"Burn it down!" The leader bellows, his order met by sadistic cheers from his subordinates. You pull the trigger. A red bolt soars towards the back of Shingen's head, exploding in a modest spark of crimson.

Bits of brain and skull scatter about. Gasps and shrieks erupt from the tense crowd, unsure of whether to flee or keep watching until the end. The would-be Quincy clumsily drops face-first onto the ground. His henchmen are speechless, their heads twirling around in search of the cause. One of them finally spots you, points and yells, but fighting you is the last thing on their minds. Just as they make to run away, the corpse quivers, disturbing them even more than the sight of a death god.

It props itself up on its arms and rises. With crazed eyes that really are on the verge of popping out of their sockets, the man glares at you with hatred that the living shouldn't be able to express.

But that's because he's dead. He's just too stubborn to accept it. His regeneration can't keep up with that kind of damage. You think that even if it was a notch higher, it would have still failed. But even so, you need to make sure that his show of pride doesn't develop into anything more dangerous.

(1/2)
>>
>>45803448
Matsu Shingen raises his powerful arms, taking up a formidable stance even as his life leaks out rapidly from the back of his head.

You point the crossbow in his direction once more. There's no time or point in performing Kido. The next shot will blow apart the last remaining half of his skull. No spiritual being can survive without a head, no matter what it may be.

This time, you do set a trajectory. You don't think his subordinates are particularly loyal to him, but you're not going to give them the chance to take a bullet for their leader. The bolt will drop straight from above. You pull the trigger. The bolt, just like a bullet, soars forwards. One of the thugs twitches, but ultimately doesn't budge. It seems that Matsu Shingen really has no loyalty to rely on. But even that would have only been a display to satisfy his pride.

The projectile suddenly bounces upwards, not even a trace of change in its great speed. When its target is directly underneath, it bounces downwards.

The dead man thrusts one of his fists up into the air, as if to celebrate some kind of triumph, meeting the bolt of spiritual energy with his bare hand...

...And the projectile disperses into countless miniscule pieces.

Filthy Quincy.
>>
>>45803496
I was wondering if something like this was possible. Should've said something.
>>
>>45803496
>Reishi Dispersion (Ranged)
>Rank: E-
>Type: Anti-Unit
>Range: 1-10
>An ability that utilizes the Quincy's ability to manipulate Reishi in an irregular, explosive fashion. Rather than taking the Reishi from all around in order to form a weapon or a projectile, the spiritual particles are forcibly dispersed around a small area. This contends with the lowest of the target's END and REIA instead of their END. Because the concentration of Reishi in Soul Society's air is much higher than in the Human World, this technique loses most practical use due to the difficulty of execution.

>Reishi Dispersion Strike
>Rank: D-
>Type: Anti-Unit
>Range: 1
>After marking a point of dispersion with the ranged version of Reishi Dispersion, the user follows up with an unarmed strike charged with Reiryoku, which is then transferred to the dispersion point in order to enhance the ranged version many times over. When successful, the fist does not actually make any kind of contact with the target. Rather than an attack in and of itself, this is simply a boost to the ranged version. Requires meticulous precision to perform.

It's him saying that Ishikai would have stood no chance in an open battle. ...But that's exactly why a Shinigami is so fearsome.

You make a third shot. No one tries to rescue him. The red arrow impacts with his brow, and the body finally falls.

Perhaps he was waiting for something to happen, but it did not. Shingen answered the questions you arrived here to answer. His technique could have caused the kinds of injuries you have seen on the corpses you've inspected.

As the dojo members flee, the crowd erupts in cheer. It seems that your mission is over.

...

So it seems like our shield would have been a terrible choice.
>>45803546
I find it ironic that we beat him essentially by fighting like a Quincy.

I'm sure shadowrun anons will disagree with this but it seems like the best way to figure out what's going on

I feel like we should destroy the body of the doppelganger since it seems to be stressing out MC real bad.
>>
>>45803586
Well probably. But I don't really want the other squad members to know.

Urahara needs to see the doppelganger anyways.

He would just keep stressing out about the doppelganger and his own origin though. Better to study and investigate it.

I'd like to end the thread for tonight, it's getting really late for me! The next thread will start off with the most voted action!

Next thread is tomorrow! But just in case, keep an eye out on twitter:

If you have any feedback or questions, shoot them my way! Always happy to listen and answer those!

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for running!

Thanks for running!

So would Shingen have been able to punch/disrupt Kidou?
>>
>>45803847
Thanks for runnin'
Also, what's up with your pic changing name every thread?
>>
>>45803931
Not of something higher than E Rank! It would shave off a little damage off of a #31 at most. But because the #31 is an AoE attack, there was no need to even aim within an arm's reach anyway! He'd be in a ton of trouble once the fireballs started flying.

It's changing name every thread?
>>
>>45804026
Yeah, you're mushroom pic you put up at the end of running.
>>
>>45804042
How strange!
>>
>>45804136
How badly would the surprise sword attack with shunpo have gone?
>>
>>45804159
That AGI increase would have truly shined there! If used with a Shunpo, the chances would have been pretty impressive despite the situation!
>>
>>45804224
So it seems like even with weak overall stats, Ryouta can still handle most lowish level opponents?
>>
>>45804447
Stealth is a huge advantage. Even a person with low stats can cause some severe damage to someone stronger under the right circumstances.

and the only person alive that has seen us use multiple abilities is dead.

Wonder what happened to the "body" we had found (also luls on the dismissals of my multiple theories from last thread).

Another interesting thing to note is that Quincy hollowfication shouldn't normally be possible since their reishi is apparently incompatible.
>>
>>45804547
We probably would have fit well into the Onmitsukido.

Wonder who's running that these days.
>>
>>45806414
Well I mean Urahara used to work with the 2nd division, if we ask him and he's reasonably sure we won't eventually destroy him, he might even teach us.

Also 2nd captain is still Soi Fon. All the Vizards except Hiyori are gone, and so is Yoruichi and presumably Tessai. It's unclear why this is, but Hiyori is suspicious.

Erase the doppelganger's body.

Playing sniper was pretty fun.

So we're Mayuri's jar baby? And Urahara probably suspects something after seeing our Zanpakuto.
