The preparations for conflict have come along well, with Shen and Legion leading the bulk of your minions to the borderlands, raising small forts in anticipation of attack from the west. Marigold is nearly done raising fortifications on the iron mine, which has already begun supplying you with ample amounts of ore. You have all blacksmiths and armorers working from dawn till dusk on tools for your army. Every week wagons roll along the highways carrying loads of steel spears, arrows, helms, and breastplates. Although things seem to be going well for now, you are nervous.

You have entered the world stage, and soon you will be put to the grindstone. Vanessa is doing all she can to manage the logistical aspect of the operation, and Duncan gets less than four hours of sleep between constant information runs, but that will mean little and less once the banners are raised.

Today, as you look over some reports from the field, you get the news. A small force have ambushed one of your supply wagons along the road, raiding the contents and killing the driver. Duncan found clear signs of trained soldiers, as opposed to brigands. The enemy has made the first move, and now you must make yours.

>Be patient, and assign guards to all wagons from now on
>Order Shen and Legion to organize a counter-raid
>Make your way to the fort nearest the location of the attack

Rather than act hastily, you give the order to have armed guards escort supply wagons from now on. Rushing into conflict can be dangerous, and so it should never be done without forethought.

The guards meet resistance on the first few runs, and you lose a few men, but after that the raids all but cease. The newest problem seems to be amassing forces along the border. The fort scouts see them daily, setting up small camps just outside of projectile range. Your men have become quite accurate with bows, but only a siege weapon could reach from the distance at which they sit.

A week after this news reaches you, duncan returns to the fortress with a missive, sealed in wax. You tear it open, and are slightly surprised to find it is from the Senate of the nation to the west. They request your presence for a peace council, ignoring the fact that they are the aggressors in this relationship so far.

Duncan advises against this meeting, as it reeks of a trap. But he who knows himself, and not his enemy, may suffer in battle.

>>
>>45817360
I say we reply, asking them to meet us, as they are the aggressors.
>>
>>45817425
You rip the message into shreds, and sprinkle them into the dustbin. Duncan seems relieved, and returns to his work.

A few days pass, and the enemy seems to be remaining stationary. The scouts estimate something approaching thirty-thousand, a match for your own forces, though they seem to carry little more than spears and roundshields. Things remain here for nearly a month, until another message arrives, this time worded in such a way that you'd almost think these people believe themselves on the high ground. It's almost threatening.

"Please attend, or action will be taken." It says.

>Attend

>>

You roll your eyes, and decide to at least hear them out. Duncan and Vanessa prepare a small dossier on the enemy, and you set off in the morning.

Rather than teleport, you elect to ride a coach, first to buy time to decide on a course of action, and second to have a look at the lands of your rivals personally.

The plains and hills of the enemy territory are quite similar to yours. The road you follow passes by several farming fields and a ranch, which seems to breed fine riding horses. Worth taking note of. You pass through three towns, each more pathetic and afraid than the last.

>>

You act quite sweet to the smallfolk, helping elderly women cross the road, assisting house-pets down from high trees, and flirting with all. The people grow to like you, and yet you sense that they do not quite understand the power you wield. Still, it makes things quite interesting when every innkeeper bids for your business, rather than force you to stay in the state approved lodgings. Young women seem quite taken with you as well, ignoring the salt and pepper in your hair to focus on the luster of your armor and the weight of your coin-purse, both metaphorically and literally.

You arrive at the final town late one night, just outside of the range of the capitol. The driver leaves you at a small inn that looks to be little more than a termite-eaten shack with a room that holds nothing but a straw mat and a candle.

This is a tactic as old as you, and likely older. They plan to give you a hard night of sleep, to put you off your game come the meeting. Now you must play your hand.

You leave your armor on the mat, careful to place a death curse on it so that none may move it without succumbing to the dread virus known to the common man as "The Shitting Death". That done, you take a dark step back into your own home and pull on your dressing gown before whipping up a couple of mugs of hot cocoa with marshmallows.

You find Vanessa in your office, going over a pile of paperwork and reports. You give her a break, and sip the drinks together as you catch up on recent events.

"So, Daddy, about the deal we made?" You recall with great annoyance the promise to sire Vanessa what can only be described as a 'pet brother', if she were to find a suitable mother to such a child. You admit as much.

"Well, I lined up some good choices, and I think it would be nice if you met some of them. It would only be for business at first, but maybe you'll like one of them enough to get drunk and fuck over the desk?"

Vanessa seems a bit pouty, but she's like that whenever she doesn't get her way. Thw two of you finish your cocoa, and head to bed. After a tight six hours of sleep, you wake, wash up, and head back to the cubbyhole that is your inn room.

When you arrive, you are only somewhat surprised to see a rather large and sharp knife protruding from the gorget of your armor. Had you been in it, you might have suffered a bad scratch. It might even have inflamed. More important, someone had the courage to try and kill you in your sleep tonight, but they're long gone now. Quite informative.

You stow the knife away for now, and head out into the night. You roust the stablemaster and purchase a strong horse before mounting up and riding out into the deep blue dawn.

You follow the road at full gallop, and arrive just after sunrise at the capitol with an exhausted horse, which you promptly flip for the price of directions to the Senate. You travel the streets of the capitol city, opulent and ostentatious, with buildings hewn from marble and granite, and people robed in fine wools. Clearly the place has enjoyed an era of prosperity, and likely survives entirely on tithes from the surrounding regions.

Your armor gets many looks, and some guards even attempt to accost you, but it takes little more than a wave of the hand to send them tumbling into the street. When you at last reach the Senate building, you are stopped by two heavily armed and decorated soldiers who look to have seen their fair share of combat.

You plant your feet, cross your arms, and demand to be given audience with the Senate. The two guards are angry at first, but after a couple of fruitless attempts to impale you on their pikes, they just seem confused and concerned. Eventually, one of them gives in and heads inside to speak with an official. You wait patiently, and soon enough a fat, balding man in fine clothes jogs out to meet you and guide you in.

The Senate building is quite magnificent. Thousands of the people's hard earned taxes must have gone into this marble and tile temple to democracy. As you walk the halls, following the portly man, you wonder if maybe you might redo the fortress in a more modern style.

You arrive in a large chamber, circular and shaped something like a bowl, with seats rising all around. Most of them are filled with old men and a few rare women, all eyeing you like hawks. The portly man leads you to the center, and hurries away to seal the chamber door. You take a long look around, searching for signs of weakness. At least half of the hundred attendees here look ready to rip you in half, if they only could.

You stand at the middle of the room, saying nothing. You find a good spot to stare at in the crowd, and focus there with the intensity of the sun. Eventually whispers begin to rise up in the silence, until finally the silence is deafening, and someone must speak.

"Lord of the Freelands, might we ask why it is you have seen fit to visit us so early? Our meeting was not to begin for another six hours. We intended to give you time to eat, and enjoy our famous bathhouse, known far and wide for it's soothing and healing properties."

That even now they would push tourism is evidence of their decadence.

You go over the offenses against you, including the attacks on your supply wagons. They murmur for a moment, before the same man, tall and strong despite his age, speaks again. If he isn't their leader, he's got some influence.

"Please, Lord of the Freelands, we beg you to see reason. It was not our man who targeted you in the night, nor was it our troops who raided your wagons. This can all be explained by common banditry! As for our guards, they were merely acting on orders to secure the premises against all potential threats. Surely you can see the logic there?"

The Senate begins to murmur again. They seem quite sure of themselves.

>"I've been at this game much longer than any of you. I wrote the textbook on diversion. Reimburse me, or die here."

You assure them you won't fall for such feeble attempts at deception, and that your only reason for coming here is to make an official declaration of war against them, unless of course they're willing to simply hand you their lands peacefully. You can feel the disdain fill the room like water, and it's nearly as hard to breathe as if that were literal. The Senators begin shouting and bickering, until the old man manages to bring them to order, and make one last attempt to appease you.

"Lord of the Freelands, please. We need not come to blows. We are more than willing to forgive your incursion into our territory, and we are sure you can overlook a few unfounded claims of aggression. Please, think rationally. Our military might is known across the continent, and your forces are but peasants with sharp sticks and a year of drilling. A war would only cause needless bloodshed."

You actually hear some of the Senators chuckle. It seems the sly insult to your armed forces went over well. The sad fact is they aren't wrong. They outnumber you ten to one, have better training, more commanders, superior arms, and worst of all more experience in war. Then again, you have yourself, a succubus, an assassin, a thrall, a warrior, and a child who has grown to have some sort of obsession with the flesh of women.

You are tired of chatter. You reach out and turn your open palm upward, summoning your Hellfire Sword, which falls intoyour grip gently as it materializes. The room falls deathly silent, and you pick a nice fat women to cleave in two with a leaping downward slash.

Suddenly the room is all screams and heavy footsteps. The Senators try to climb over one another to escape as you bisect them with wide and powerful swings. Some of them tumble down the high partitions and make for the door. If you're going to do something, you're going to do it right. With a snap of your fingers, you summon a wall of flames to block the door, setting one of the Senators on fire and burning him to a sizzling mass of meat and fat within moments. Another snap of the finger calls forth Legion, the undead amalgamation of a thousand souls. One look at the carnage, and his brief moment of confusion turns to one of total understanding. He draws his longsword from it's home on his back, and begins slashing through the stampeding crowd of aristocrats.

Together the two of you massacre the defenseless democrats, and stand soaked in blood and gore as the doors to the chamber begin sounding with great force from the other side. It seems the guards have come to see what the ruckus was.

You call Legion to your side. He rips his sword from the back of a dead Senator and wipes it clean on the corpse's clothes before leaping up to stand beside you. When the doors to the chamber finally burst open, causing three unfortunate guards to tumble forward into the fiery wall and burn, you teleport away with your best haunting laugh.

Back home, you dismiss Legion back to the front and order him and Shen to slaughter any and all who try to cross the border without discrimination. You wipe some of the blood from your armor and summon Vanessa and the others.

You tell her you'll need her help taking the minds of some of their more powerful leaders, as well as Duncan's hand for those too strong willed to succumb to charm. They both nod, and begin preparing mentally. You get yourself cleaned up, and get ready to stride into the fray if need be.

In mere hours, the border forts are under attack. Though made from wood and mud, they hold strong, and with the help of Legion and Shen, two of the attacking forces are decimated and routed within the first day. The remaining forts hold until the first night, but you have already begun to lose men. The only saving grace is that thanks to your troops bow training, they are able to fire an effective volley that lands squarely on the attacking force before they can make it to the walls of the fort.

You need to find some way to even the odds for your men.

You send Vanessa and Duncan to begin dealing with the commanders in the capitol, while you head toward the border to join the melee yourself.

You are undoubtedly more powerful than anything they have, including siege weapons, and yet they have the advantage in numbers. It seems like you are fighting nonstop from sunrise to sunset, felling hundreds, only for hundreds more to take their place. Even when a fort seems safe, you travel to the next and find your men overwhelmed, and in need of rescue. Legion and Shen help, but they can only slay one man at a time, and within two weeks the three of you are all but dead on your feet from exhaustion. Your age had finally caught up to you.

You sit, breathing heavily within the walls of one of your forts, taking water and food from one of the troops as the enemy charges your position, armed with wooden shields to block your men's arrows from above. Shen and Legion are scattered to other outposts, leaving you and the hundred fighting men and women you have to fend of an approaching force of two thousand.

You do your best to use the very limited magic you know to augment your odds, but even then the sheer number of attackers surrounding you and rushing past you to your men is exhausting to deal with. After an hour of constant melee, you finally lose strength in your legs, and fall to one knee. Before you know it, your limbs are being bound in rope, and though you have the strength of a hundred men, it is diminished by your physical state, and you struggle to remain free. You hear your own men begin charging from their safe place atop the fort walls, taking spear and knife up in your defense. The brave fools slay a good number, but are in turn slain themselves, until you are the only man left, rolling on the ground and resisting the pull of a dozen hempen lassos.

You rest your body as they take you away, back toward whatever hole they came from. You manage to sleep for a few hours undisturbed, before waking hungry and thirsty and sore. You wiggle a bit, to find out the strength of the rope binding you. It's quite high quality, you must admit, and the knots are very well made, but even so you are able to snap the weave and break yourself loose after some time. That done, you break down the door of the cart and leap from it, landing safely on the ground amid a procession of marching men. They are shocked, giving you just enough time to summon your weapon and cut them down, creating a path to freedom.

As you dash across the stony field, you thank them for attending you while you rested. They try to take up weapons and charge again, but they are confused, and you have plenty of time to teleport to safety.

You arrive in the closest location hosting human life, which unfortunately turns out to be a small homestead near the edge of a large wood. You collide with the ground, tired and half starved, doing everything you can to stay conscious and upright. As you stand again, you see the house in the distance come to life with light in the window. The front door opens slowly, and a person peeks out. Seeing you, they emerge and rush toward you.

Howdy OP, How you doing man?
>>

You take a knee and wait as the person dwelling within the homestead approaches. The dim light of oncoming evening makes it hard to make them out but for a silhouette, but when they arrive it becomes clear it is a young woman. She comes to a stop beside you, and asks if you're able to stand. You tell her you can, and she helps you to your feet. She begins guiding you back toward the house, where you sense more people.

You allow her to guide you to the house, though you gird yourself for the worst. As you climb the wooden steps, you hear voices inside. Through the doorway, you feel the warmth of a fireplace, and smell fresh baked bread. You look around this quaint hovel, and see shelves filled with jars of jam, as well as various wooden toys scattered on the floor and countertop. There is a pile of dirty clothes beside a now empty washtub, and you can hear the whispers go totally silent. The young woman leads you to a chair, where you sit, and behold a large door set in a wall that divides the building in two. Whoever was speaking is no doubt on the other side of it.

The young woman moves deftly to the small kitchen and begins preparing a pot of hot water. She does so without even asking, and quickly returns to you.

"Please, you must be dead tired. Take off that armor and relax, tea and bread will be ready soon."

You remove your helmet, and feel the fresh air of the room wash across your face. You didn't realize how used to the odor of sweat and blood you'd gotten the past few days. You ask the woman who she is, and why she'd go to the trouble to help a random man wandering in her yard.

"I'm Priscilla. I take care of this cottage for the owner, as well as other things. When I first saw you, I thought you might be him, returned from a venture abroad, but clearly you aren't. Even so, he wouldn't have turned you away, and nor will I. I take it from your armor you are a fighting man? Perhaps a mercenary hired to combat the invaders from the east?" She continues the conversation as she takes the whistling kettle from the stovetop and begins pouring water into a cup, dunking a teabag into it to soak.

>"Yes, that's right. I'm but a hired sword."

She seems put off, but doesn't pry, and hands you a cup full of tea, as well as a piece of day old bread with a bit of jam from the shelves. You take a secret sniff, and detect nothing immediately threatening, then have a small sip. Mint, you think.

She sits down across from you, and you ask her about the invaders. She is surprised you've never heard of them, but explains anyway.

"The soldiers who came through here said that an evil man was amassing power to the east, and killing anyone who crossed his path. I don't get to leave the cottage, so I don't know much about the world I can't see, but I do find it a little hard to believe such a man exists. I think sometimes that the soldiers are lying to find support from the people. Then again, the master of this cottage tells me often that there are cruel people in the world, who only wish to see others suffer." She takes a long sip from her cup, and looks you dead in the eye. "What do you think?"

>"Evil is very real. And it's all around us."

People are people, we are petty, we fight, squabble and hold grudges. Saying someone is pure good or pure evil is nonsense. The real question is, how to they act? Sometimes the boy who bullied you becomes a hero, or the old grumpy women saves hundreds of lives with medicine. It is about perspective. People look too close to themselves, what people should do is think about consequences. You acted out of kindness towards me, but I could be cruel. However, even if I was, or am, does that mean I will kill you? No, of course not. Because, using perspective, you have aided me, so I have nothing to gain for harming you. In this hypothetical scenario.
>>
>>45822613
She seems to comprehend your logic. You take another sip from the cup, and finish the bread and jam in a single bite. It goes down a bit rough, but food is food. After finishing your drinks, she takes the cup and moves them to a small pile of dirty plates. There are enough there to feed a dozen, unless she's just a very lazy washer up. She returns to her seat with something in her mouth, probably candy by the smell of butterscotch.

"Well, you seem a bit better off than before. I shouldn't offer this, but if you'd like to sleep here for the night, I'm sure the master wouldn't mind. That is, if you'd like to."

You can't teleport again, at least not to anywhere safe. If you have a good meal and a long night's rest, you'd be in top form, but you doubt she has that much to spare in her cupboards. Still, there's no way of following you here at the moment, so perhaps this is a good place to stay.

You tell her you can't in good conscience continue to play on her hospitality. She accepts, and you stand, feeble though you may be. You reach into your tabard and produce a fistful of coins and a business card, which you hand to her. She is amazed at the luster of true cold, not even concerned with the card until you are already nearly out the door. Just as you are about to cross the threshold, you hear a clatter and turn to see what the matter is. Priscilla is on the ground, collapsed with the coins scattered all round. She is holding the card in both hands, shaking violently, and there are tears beginning to stream down her face. You hesitate for a moment, and then the door to the next room bursts open. A dozen children, boys and girls both, rush out to aid Priscilla, trying to hoist her back to her feet as a team. She gazes up at you, and points a shaky finger.

"It's you... you're the one... you're the one who..." You watch as the card falls from her hand, and one of the children, a girl with lustrous blonde hair cut into a bob, picks it up. She reads the card, and then looks to you. You get a bad feeling.

The girl's face contorts into a terrible scowl, and she reaches into her shirt, tugging on a small chain to produce a silver emblem. You take a step back, nearly falling from the steps. She chants something in the aetheric tongue, and a bolt of light bursts from the emblem, spearing you in the chest and sending you flying backward into the dirt and grass outside.

You get back to your feet as quick as you can, but your armor offers no protection from divine magics, and your body is still weak. You turn back and see the girl stepping out of the house, face red and teary.

You raise a hand, and tell the girl to cease. She wipes her face with her forearm, and continues chanting. Another bolt of light streaks forth, catching your leg and sending you to the ground in pain. As you bat your smoking knee to regain the feeling in it again, the girl approaches.

"Murderer! You killed my teacher! You ran him through with that black sword!" You struggle back to a standing position, recalling an event some time ago that matches these terms.

Priscilla and the children emerge from the house now, and watch in awe as the girl approaches you with her silver emblem raised and burning brighter than a lantern.

You reach out and call forth your Hellfire Sword. It falls into your grip, but it's weight is suddenly a burden, and you need both arms to lift it. The combination of exhaustion, depletion of your magical energies, and exposure to divine magics have made you shamefully weak, but using force of will you regain your feet, and level your weapon with the girl. She is frightened, but undeterred.

"I'm not afraid of you, monster! I'll kill you like you killed him!" The girl reaches into her belt and draws forth a small dagger, barely fit to carve fruit. She closes her eyes, and runs the silver emblem along the length of the small blade.

"Mother of Children, Protector of Innocence, Father of Light, Wanderer of Fields, bless my weapon, and let it cut the dark!"

The little bitch has managed to bless her knife. You aren't prepared to make the gamble on whether it can harm you further. You raise your sword and step in, closing the distance between you in a mere moment.

She raises her knife, and with a storm of sparks your weapons meet, and she manages to turn your weapon away. Even so, she collapses from the strain of the act, leaving herself wide open. You raise your weapon.

"Stop! Please!" You turn your head in time to see Priscila dash forward, and throw herself on top of the girl. "Don't kill her! She doesn't know what she's doing! Please! Let her go!" You hesitate, and the other children come as well, forming a pile atop their guardian and peer. They weep all at once, even as the girl struggles to free herself. Letting her go is inviting her wrath.

You tell the girl your perspective on the truth. She refuses to swallow it, as a child often does, but you feel the seeds of doubt sewn into her mind. You banish your sword, and tell Priscilla to use the money you gave for the good of these children. Still in tears, she agrees. The small girl struggles and growls, waving her knife madly, even as the blessing upon it fades. You begin limping away, listening to the cooing of the children, and Priscilla's whispers to the wrathful girl as they work in tandem to calm her rage. You make for the forest, hoping to find any place to rest until morning.

You eventually settle on a small pond, where you stop to drink and eat a few live frogs. Far from the worst meal you've had in your life, and high in nutrients too. With a full belly, a terrible stench, and a weary body, you sleep.

Come morning, you feel much better. Your men have been without orders, and you're still not at full strength.

You use the strength you have to take a long step back to the fort where Legion was set to be. When you arrive, you find the fort in full motion. Troops repair cracks in the walls, and tend the wounded. Legion himself stands atop the fortifications, watching the choke point on which the fort sits, between two rocky hills. You call to him, and he turns, leaping down without a moment of hesitation.

You see his reason, and it's nothing you didn't already know. You think on it a moment, but can't seem to come up with a solid conclusion yet.

Suddenly you hear a signal from atop the walls, calling out the approach of enemy forces.

"Chargers! Five hundred men on foot! Fifty on horse! Siege engines!"

The fort comes alive with shouting as men man their stations. Even the wounded to their best to take up bows and climb the walls.

You tell the men to begin abandoning the fort, and heading for home. They hesitate, but are not hard to sway. They long for safety as any man would. To give them time to move, you and Legion take the wall, and prepare to hold off the approaching forces.

Legion takes up a bow, but you can do better. You summon your own greatbow, a beauty carved from wood from the World Tree, and strung with the sinew of a dragon. The grip is made to resemble the scales of a serpent, invoking the god Sil, lord of deception. You pick an arrow from the quivers, and knock it. Before your very eyes, you see it transform into something twice the length and thickness, with a tip that glows blue with a power you have not needed in years.

You point the arrow at the siege engines, towers of wood and canvas built to fling stones with enough speed to shatter wood and crush men. You loose, and watch the arrow sail. It arcs, and falls right into it's target, igniting the machine in blue flame. Even from here you can see the men abandoning it as is collapses into ash.

You continue to fire at the engines, and Legion does his best to eliminate the horsemen, who would be the first to reach you, and would have no hard time moving past you and attacking your men from behind. Though the bow is not his forte, he manages to kill all but a few. Unfortunately, your arrows run out before all the horsemen are felled, though you did manage to burn every siege tower. The time has come to fall back.

>>Walk, to cover your retreating men

Gotta do our best to keep our men alive.
Every man we save now will be a man that can fight for us again tomorrow.

"Oh gods, what did they do to Charlie?!"
"I.. I can't tell where Charlie's corpse ends, and where the horse's begins.."

You and Legion abandon the wall, and shortly thereafter the fort. You take a fistful of arrows each and make for the open field.

It takes the footmen a good half hour to breach the fort without the engines, but then the horsemen are on you like hounds. The two of you kill them, but run out of arrows, and must resort to your swords. Even then, you dispatch the riders and continue on your way. By nightfall, the enemy has ceased their pursuit, and you are safe to rest.

You find the troops camped in a small divot, eating their fill of their remaining rations and treating the injured. When you arrive, they salute, and ask for their orders.

>>Rest for the night

But have legion scout around for the night to make sure we don't get ambushed while we rest, along with some of the more physically well troops to take shifts keeping watch around us.

You order the men to rest, but tell Legion to keep watch, aided by a two hour rotation. You yourself are still too drained to do much more than take a bit of food and sit with the others. Seeing you like this doesn't do much for their confidence, but it does ease their anxiety a good deal to have you around in case another fight breaks out.

Come morning, the troops pack up and begin moving again. Their captain assures you they they can make it back to friendly territory on their own, insisting you help the other forts. Of the twelve built, five are taken now, or so they say.

You tell the men to continue alone, and tell Legion to head south, toward the nearest occupied fort. As he dashes away, you teleport to the north, to a fort at the side of a large lake.

The men there are ragged, and barely able to hold their weapons. It seems the enemy has seen fit to poison the water, and therefore the fish and other animal meat, rather than fight head on. The men won't last a month before their stomachs give in, but if they can be given medicine, they will survive, though how long they will fare in combat is anyone's guess.

>Bring them medicine, risking the loss of another, healthier unit somewhere else as you wait.
>Leave them here, you cannot save a few at the cost of many
>Order them to make one last march, and throw themselves at the enemy across the water

Give them medicine and order them to retreat to safety if they're at least strong enough to move?

Cover their retreat, maybe set magical traps or something on the fort to greet the enemy soldiers who come while they retreat.

Also, it seems participation is dying down, maybe all the anons have gone to bed?
>>

Could be, if so then I might have to wrap for tonight.
>>

>One last march, and lead them.
If there is somewhere for them to fall back to, maybe that instead, but those who have nowhere left to go- No family, no home, no hope, only war...
The man next to them will be their family, a place in eternal glory their home, and we will be their hope, to bring war and ruin to the poisoners.
>>
>>45827112
Will you continue again tomorrow, or will this just be the end?

>>45827144
Good speech, anon. I vote to use this, but only if retreat really isn't an option. I'd rather not have too many men die if we can avoid it because losing troops will affect us greatly since we're already so outnumbered.
>>
>>45827144
Voting for this too

You order the men to make one last march, with you at the head of the spear. They dig deep and find what little strength they have left, and raise their weapons to join you. You dismiss any too weak or afraid to fight, but few admit to such feeble constitution, and the full force of the fort goes with you.

The battle in the enemy camp is an ambush, thanks to the loud sounds of the lake and animals, as well as the cover of the greenery. You wipe out the camp, but your men do not last the night. You burn the camp, and all bodies within, as both pyre and scourge.

You travel norther still, but the next two forts are nothing but splinters and corpses, friend and for alike. If any of your men lived, they are far from here. Only the final fort, protected by snow and frozen streams and rivers, fares well enough to have protected the men within. You order them to retreat, and though they resist, you know leaving them here is asking them to die, and if not tomorrow, then soon.

Of the thirty-thousand men you had to start, you have only nine-thousand remaining. The enemy losses are estimated at fifty-thousand, with one hundred thousand still in reserve. The few men you do recover are weary, and demoralized. You must find some way to raise their confidence, or you risk defection.

You hand out the only form of spoils you have available: bone. Each man left alive is given a bit of bone, which they are entirely too confused about, until one of them sparks an idea. Within days, each soldier decorates his or her armor with bone, and carves a totem from a rib. It's not what you expected, but creativity should be encouraged, you suppose.

It's not long after that Marigold informs you the mine has been attacked. Luckily, forts of stone are sturdier than wood, and she has managed to repel the attackers along with your most elite men. That's the only good news you've had in months. That is, until Vanessa returns home.

Your daughter, precious as she is, approaches you in the training hall. Walking in front of her, dressed in maid uniforms and wearing collars, are the two twin girls who have now become her loyal pets. They seem entirely happy to be here.

"Daddy! I have someone you're really gonna want to meet!"

>"Not now, dear, this war is taking up all of my time."

"Vanessa claps her hands, and the doors to the training yard open, revealing three elderly men. They are all gray of hair, but strong in body and demeanor. They wear expensive looking armor in the style of the western nation, and march in perfect unison. When they reach you, they each in line kneel, and present to you their helmets, decorated with the crests of a hawk, a horse, and a lion.

"Daddy, these are Greg, Vince, and Jules. They're the third, fourth, and sixth legion generals!"

You look into their eyes. Their souls are completely taken by Vanessa. They have no will. They are but husks.

"It is our immense pleasure to serve you, my dark lord." Says one of them, but you're bad with names and also don't care. Vanessa stands on her toes to plant a peck on your cheek.

"They each have twenty thousand men, daddy. Soldiers in the west are loyal to only their commanders and comrades. How silly!"

Indeed. And yet, Vanessa may just have handed you the key to victory.
