Another shell slams into the water in front of you - a big one, from the blast - and your corgi charges right through it, barking wildly as his nose climbs upwards over the low swell it left. You see it coming and brace, gripping the tether with your free hand as you hastily sling Fenrir as tightly as possible. The swell isn't much, but at this speed it's more than enough to send you airborne. Stiffening your legs, you do your damndest to stick the landing -

- and promptly find yourself screaming as you slide over a slick, wet wooden deck.

Clearing the aft gun by some miracle you instead fetch up against the aft of the deckhouse, where you take a few seconds to contemplate how lovely it is to breathe without the flaming ache of what are probably cracked ribs. After a few seconds of wounded panting, you blink away the stars to find the plywood hull of a PT boat beneath your ass...

... and it's screaming for everything its worth. The full fury of three Packard Merlins are roaring and snorting mere feet from where you sit sprawled on the deck, their vibrations shaking the thin wooden hull from deck to keel. You kick off the damned skis and stagger forward, climbing onto the deckhouse and crawling towards the flying bridge. Every twitch of the boat's helm sends you sliding over the spray-soaked deck; the little craft is so responsive that its sharp bow cuts deep into every turn, pitching you this way and that. With a 45 knot wind ripping past your ears as you raise your head over the windscreen, it almost feels like you're flying again. Wiping the spray from your optics as best you can, you turn up the magnification and see the abyssal battleship ahead, turning away from you and still blazing with everything it's got. The tertiary guns are speaking now, 57mm shells splashing into the water so fast it seems to be raining lead.

“ATTABOY!” you scream giddly, slapping the plywood deck with one gloved hand. “GET AFTER 'EM, YEAH!” You brace Fenrir on the windscreen and have just enough time to draw a beard before the sternum-shaking concussion of a twin-50 opening up starts thumping through your chest - the electronic earbuds save your hearing, but this close to the starboard turret, there's no real ignoring it. You try anyway, elevating Fenrir to 45 degrees and pulling the trigger three times, wincing beneath the heavy recoil. An eternity later, three titanic blasts rend the mist as the HE shells slam into the water. Well wide of the mark, of course - but it gets the bastard's attention.

Huge glowing tracers come lobbing your way, bright beads that float lazily in air for long heartbeats before lengthening into flaming lances that whistle past in a single chilling instant. The pom-poms have opened up, 37mm shells tracking for your boat. You fire off three more shells, riding the recoil up a bit, trying to fire a ranging ladder salvo. The battleship is a mere phantom in the mist, its lines barely discernible. You track its progress by the cinders and sparks vomiting from its stacks; bright glowing motes that suggest its location and course even as its own exhaust smoke settles into the fog to hide its lines.

The bright winks of the six-pounders flash and shimmer, bent at odd angles through the thick fog - until the eight-inch turrets loose another salvo at you, their heavy reports thumping over the water a heartbeat after their muzzle flash. The NVGs clamp quickly to keep from hurting your eyes, the image fading back in just in time to give you brief glimpses of the predread illuminated by its own guns. You line your irons up on afterimages; ghosts lingering in the optics and fire again, and again, and again, the sharp flat WHAMs of detonating HE rolling over and into the heavy reports of BB-4s guns as they seek you out.

Soon the hulk of the abyssal is looming out of the dark waters, visible despite the fog and smoke and all of Hell's hideous tricks - the range is closing, and fast, 6-pound shells ripping and tearing through the air past your head as your boat weaves and ducks through the steel rain.

So anyways, here's a little jumbo sized update! Our KC tabletop is proceeding smoothly, or as smoothly as a fleet of psychopaths can manage in the face of the GM attempting to get us killed at every opportunity! So far, the fleet's managed to break through the Abyssal blockade surrounding Japan and link up with the JMSDF and the trapped USN assets. We managed to get through pretty intact. It was pretty crazy, actually.

For example, Seydlitz rolls THREE CRITS IN A ROW, only to critfail a rather important save and taking some serious damage. Seydlitz becoming PUNISHED SEYDLITZ due to a combination of said battle damage and an encounter with an Abyssal doppelganger of her. She... didn't take it well.


Then our fleet met our Japanese counterparts. It was... surreal. Like that one scene in Shaun of the Dead. You know the one.


And uh, naturally, things in Japan aren't very rosy. They've managed to hold the line, but attrition has eaten away at their forces and Japan has actually split into North and South, with the south being regular Japan and the north being ultranationalist and dicks in general. (We joked that their leader is named Nambu.)


Oh right, and one faction of the fleet is secretly trying to rehabilitate captured Abyssals (which we have nicknamed the TRAITORS) while another faction is secretly aware that the ship spirit of our carrier, the Pacifica, is actually active and alive (which we have nicknamed the LOYALISTS).


So yeah, amid all these we gotta figure out how to save Japan! Meanwhile, we've met PUNISHED SAM, Willie being adopted into DesDiv6.5, and lots of not yet explained super spoopy ship shit!

As for our own characters, Seydlitz is becoming SLIGHTLY (more) crazy. Graf Spee is keeping an eye on Seydlitz. Vetehinen has started a BLOOD FUED with Iku because sub rivalry. Tashken has started a BLOOD FUED with Shimikaze over who is the fastest. Momboat Ontario is gonna keep momboating. Anna getting jealous of Inazuma for stealing her title as the cutest secretary ship. Robin/Victorious is still in IDENTITY CRISIS mode. Jason is off doing experiments on Abyssals to figure out there shit, while Dorsetshire, Idaho, and Alabama are just kind off doing their own things.

Hoel has ended up becoming a harem protag, having collected two PCs and an NPC already and is showing no signs of stopping. This was sealed with she rolled a very timely crit on a social roll when said harem was about to get unraveled.

Portland has resigned herself to being an eternal destroyer babysitter after a run in with DesDiv6.5 and Willie.

1. Nuclear propulsion in orbit is very useful. It's called a thermal expansion rocket. I.E. the NERVA engine. Regular chemical rockets have an ISP of around 200 or so in vaccum. The NERVA could achieve 800. 800. That's four times the efficiency. And unlike ion thrusters it can generate enough thrust to actually deaccelerate in a timely fashion, like you need when you're circularizing an orbit at perigee. A NERVA engine could cut transit time to Mars from months to weeks. Every time you see some dipshit sumbitch blathering about MARS NAO without including NERVA DEVELOPMENT NAO at the beginning of his pitch? Punch him in the fucking balls. But because of pussy greenies this will never happen, we'll have to wait for economical fusion power before we build a thermal expansion rocket.

2. ORION is not interesting because LEL BLAST OUR WAY THRU SPACE WITH NUKES HOW METAL. ORION is interesting because it scales up a hell of a lot better than chemical rockets. In other words, ORION lets you build a ship several orders of magnitude heavier than the heaviest payload we have ever put into space with a conventional chemical rocket (the Saturn V) and still get it into orbit... by hammering it heavenward with mother-fucking NUKES.

Yes, setting off multiple NUKES in atmo has some downsides. But they're small ones - and one - just one - launch from the desert wastes of the western US could put enough fuel into orbit to power a dozen conventionally-launched missions that rendezvous to tank up with the big floating fuel tank we put up there. Everyone knows about the Michael from Footfall, but nobody stops to think how the significant thing was how fucking massive a ship they were able to put into orbit due to how the drive system worked.

No. You're thinking of the Mark 15 destroyer-launched torpedo. The Mark 13 was the standard air-dropped torpedo; a smaller weapon much more suited to a small boat like a PT boat. Most of the egregious issues with the Mark 13 were related to problems with being dropped from planes and entering the water - the US Navy would eventually adopt the same breakaway wooden fin concept the Japanese used on their own air-dropped weapons. A surface launch was far less problematic.

Early PT boats used torpedo tubes with compressed air launching. Later ones just dropped them off the side of the damn boat (pic related.) One reason Hate's steed made such a hard turn (aside from de-assing the are and dodging the 8 inch salvo that almost nailed him) was to avoid running over his own torpedoes - they made 33 knots or so and a PT boat made... more.

There is a marked tendency among smart people to think they know everything, even if those things are well outside their field. Engineering the structure that can withstand a nuclear blast and go boing-sproinging its way through space with the captured energy is one thing. Working out the math behind fallout and then extrapolating that to environmental effects, cancer, etc, is quite another. It also doesn't help that we have no idea where the launch location is, the kilo (or mega)tonnage yield of the proposed bombs for the launch, etc, etc, etc. Setting off a megaton-yield nuke near Key West is a hugely different prospect than a kiloton-yield bomb in the middle of the Arizonan desert.

There's a thousand different ways to minimize or even eliminate fallout in an Orion launch - but Freeman wasn't talking theoreticals. He was talking the very specific theoreticals of his project, which had military goals that mandated X tonnage to orbit and a much narrower range of options that was defined by resources available, or predicted to be available within a certain timeframe. I'm telling you that airbursts that don't reach the ground, don't create fucking fallout. That's how it fucking works.

Not necessarily. Just look at my reaction last thread to that sketch of an Orion with a chemical first-stage. If you tried to tell any engineer that they could get THAT fucking monstrosity high enough off the ground to avoid having to set off an airburst that'd kick up a significant amount of radioactive dirt - yeah, I'd laugh too. It's just not feasible. And you don't have to get terribly high either, but that fucking atrocity, from an engineering standpoint, is more likely to just explode on you before you get high enough.

And even then that chemical stage would just get it high enough to minimize impact, not eliminate it. I'm willing to bet money that a combination of almost any other techniques would do a better job - including a possible Casablanca howitzer arrangement to give it that initial OOMPH.

This. I was going to be autismal and say "Air burst create some fallout!" but decided against it. The gamma/x-ray burst is frankly more dangerous in the upper atmosphere. The big problem with Orion is that you'd have to continue using the nukes even after you leave the atmosphere, bathing at least half of the world's electrical grid in a devastating EMP.

And IIRC Kaga was the biggest flight deck so her game stats were meant to reflect that. Unfortunately at that stage I doubt they realized the sheer importance of plane slot size, turning her into the undisputed queen.
Aircraft Proficiency leveled the field a lot, though. I'd say the Crane K2s are better now.
