__________

You are Sarah Karlsen, Valkyrie of Sweden, and daughter of Odin.

Everything hurts.

Your entire body aches, the worst of it deciding to reside in your head. Each moments passes with a thud resounding within the base of your skull. You open your eyes and immediately regret it, pain flaring from your vision as blinding light shines in your face. You blink several times and the light begins to fade and clear. You find yourself staring up at a cloudy blue sky.

You lean up, finding yourself lying in a grassy field, without a soul around you. The wind gently rustles the grass around you, and you close your eyes briefly to enjoy the cooling sensation.

Then the wind begins to pick up, and you hear the fluttering of wings. Opening your eyes, you look up to see nothing but clouds. However, the sound grows nearer and nearer, until it seems as if it's directly above you.

Then the beast seems to appear all at once, as if from thin air.

It stands impossibly large, far larger than even the Teuton Knight. Its scales are a dulled gray, faded marks along its chest hinting at wounds and battles long forgotten. It hangs in the air a brief moment, then descends. It lands, not with a thundering crash, but with a near gentle ease.

It stares down at you, golden eyes shining.

You struggle to stand, your muscles still aching. However, stand you do.

Before you speaks a deep voice, tinged with a mix of disgust and disbelief. The dragon looks to the sky, eyes narrowed in accusation.

"Is this my fate?" The beast asks. "To become servant of a pup, hardly able to stand?"

The sky does not answer, causing it to huff, defeated. With that it returns its attention back to you.

"What is your name, pup?" It asks.

"Sarah," You answer. "Who...what...are you?"

"I am Sigmund," The dragon answers proudly, wings extending to their full length. "Master of the skies, Demon of the Isle, and Bringer of Death."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sigmund," You say, giving a small curtsy.

"You know your courtesies, at least," He grunts. "And I suppose you also have my gratitude. Were it not for you and your sisters, I'd yet remain in my prison."

You don't immediately answer, confused, before you realize what he means.

"The egg?" You ask.

"Aye," He nods. "I may have been trapped, but I was by no means ignorant of the world around me. I've spent the last few generations doing nothing but watching, and now I intend to do much more than that."

As if to emphasize the point he rolls his massive shoulders, clearly relishing the movement.

"You have no idea what sort of stiffness one gets locked in a shell for a thousand years," He grumbles.

"Why were you locked away?" You ask.

"There was a disagreement, between myself and an old friend," Sigmund admits. "Neither of us would change our mind, and we soon came to blows. He was stronger, and thus locked me away to rot."

He doesn't explain further about what the disagreement was, and you decide not to press the issue.

"Was that who you were speaking to?" You ask, looking upward. "In the sky?"

"It was."

This dragon is almost as forthcoming and open as you. The thought makes you smile.

"Well, while you were waiting, what do you remember?"

"Do you speak of anything in particular?" The dragon asks. "It was a long wait."

"The doctor that was there," You answer.

"A very brief memory, that," Sigmund grunts. "He had only been there for a brief time before you came. A week? Perhaps two? The others that had been there longer were uneasy about his arrival. They didn't seem to approve of him being there, I'd guess. Him or that knight of his."

"Were there others like you?" You ask. "Did they have any artifacts that they moved when we attacked?"

"Not to my knowledge," He shakes his head. "They believed me to be a fossil long dead, and used me as for little more than a paperweight. A slight worth killing over, alas I could do nothing for it. As for artifacts, the station was used to study whatever they could obtain from pilfering the ruins of the dead and forgotten. More often than not, they wasted their time."

You nod at his answers, gaze briefly lowering as you think.

"Go on, child," Sigmund says. "If you have something to ask, ask it."

"Do you ever remember another Valkyrie?" You ask. "One that looked like me, only...older."

"Does this Valkyrie have a name?"

You feel your stomach sink, but you swallow hard and steel yourself.

"Ella Karlsen," You answer.

The ancient dragon seems to ponder it over, and each second feels like an eternity. Then, he seems to come to a conclusion.

"I'm sorry, child," He says. "She is not a name I know. Is she important in these times?"

"She was," You answer quietly. "She was my mother."

At that the dragon pauses, surprised. Then, he lowers himself to where he's nearly eye level with you. He inclines his head forward, wings folding behind him.

"My apologies," He says. "I did not know."

"It's alright," You answer, smiling sadly. "I've long been used to it."

You reach out and place a hand against his snout, running a hand over his scales to find them smooth and cool to the touch.

"May I make a request?" You ask.

"You may."

"May I...ride on your back?"

At that a deep, hearty chuckle escapes from the dragon as he raises up.

"I'm afraid this is not my true size, not anymore," He admits. "This was for my sake, I admit. If I were to be stuck with a human, even a Valkyrie, I enjoy knowing them first."

Before you can ask further the world around you begins to melt and fade away. When you open your eyes again you're lying back in the medical bed, the fan above you spinning lazily. You yawn, your limbs less pained than before.

However, you feel a weight on your chest, and you look down and gasp.

Sigmund stands on you, now the size of a large house-cat. He stares at you, head cocked to the side.

"My strength has long been sapped," He grumbles. "So until I can find a way to recover it, I remain this way."

>Pet him.

"For now it may be for the best," You admit. "I doubt you'd fit otherwise."

You reach up and scratch behind one of his ears.

"I believe you're ri-what the blazes are you doing?" Sigmund growls.

"I'm sorry," You smile. "It's not often I come across something this cute."

"I am not 'cute!'" Sigmund growls. "I am Sigmund, Master of the skies, Demon of th-oooooh..."

You run your hand down from the crown of his head and down his neck, causing the dragon to shudder as you scratch and rub your way down to the base of his back, between his wings. He coos for a brief moment before breaking free from his trance and snapping at your hand.

"Do NOT do that again!" He warns, then pauses. "Unless I give permission."

You only answer with a chuckle.

"Now," He huffs. "What say we get you out of bed?"

"I couldn't agree more," You say.

The dragon flutters himself into the air, allowing you to lean up and swing your legs over the side of the bed. He comes to rest himself on your shoulder, and you find him to be oddly light for his stony appearance.

"Feeling better?" He asks.

"Much," You nod. "Did you play a part in that?"

"What little magic I had left, yes," Sigmund admits. "Consider it a reward for your bravery, and for freeing me."

With that you stand and, after waiting for your balance to return, you step out of the room and into the medbay proper. There you find Orek and Tobias speaking to one another. Hearing the door open, they turn and stare in shock at you and your new companion.

"Hello," You greet them, smiling.

"Ah," Tobias stumbles, dumbstruck. "Sarah?"

"Yes?" You ask.

"What is..."

"This is Sigmund," You explain, gesturing to the dragon in question. "Master of the skies, Demon of the Isle, and Bringer of Death."

"A pleasure," Sigmund adds.

"The pleasure is mine," Orek answers. "Though I'm lost as to how you came about."

"Have you checked on the egg recently?" You ask.

A look of comprehension surfaces on the doctors face, but he only seems to grow more curious.

"I see," He notes, approaching the two of you. "Interesting..."

"Can we keep him?" You ask, beaming.

"Of course," Orek chuckles. "We would be honored to have you aboard our vessel, Sigmund."

"Yes, of course!" Tobias adds, snapping from his reverie. "Are you feeling better, then, Sarah?"

"Much," You nod.

"I'd assume so," Orek muses. "You should still be bed-ridden, yet here you stand."

"Are Emma and Anna alright?" You ask.

"Anna is on her way to a full recovery, but she's taking things slow," Orek explains. "Emma is back at the ready, though for now we're concentrated on going over what we found."

"I remember you saying that it's a start," You nod. "So, what now?"

"Now we keep our heads low, let the Order run in circles, and regain our strength," Orek says.

"The Major's considering making a stop in Germany," Tobias says. "Apparently we've made friends within the Republic."

Orek recommends you return to bed, but you're already planning on what to do next. So instead, you...

"Sarah, are you listening to me?" Orek asks.

"Of course I am!" You call over your shoulder, leaving the medbay.

"Is this a normal day on this ship?" Sigmund asks.

"I suppose," You say after a moment of thinking.

You pass by several of the crew, all stopping to stare at Sigmund. You pause to introduce him to each of them, the dragon clearly enjoying the attention and conversation. Eventually you reach the portion of the ship reserved for just the three of you, serving as your bedrooms and personal quarters.

You poke your head in Anna's bedroom to find her sleeping in her bed, curled up beneath her blanket. The sight makes you smile, and you take care not to make too much noise as you enter.

You decide not to disturb her. She's earned some rest, at the very least.

Instead you decide to look for Emma. It's a short search, as you find her in her room, her nose shoved into a book. Upon hearing the door open she looks up, a look of surprise on her face as she sees you.

"Sarah!" She says, putting aside her book and standing.

She rushes over and hugs you, wrapping her arms around you and squeezing tightly. Sigmund takes off from your shoulder, allowing her.

"Hey," You chuckle, returning the hug. "What's all this about?"

Pulling back to arms length, she looks at you and frowns.

"You nearly got yourself killed," She says, frowning. "How can I not worry?"

>"Don't you know? I'm invincible."
>"It's alright, Em. I'm right here."

"It's alright, Em," You promise. "Don't you know? I'm invincible."

"If only that were true," Emma sighs.

She hesitates, then releases her hold on you and composes herself. Then she turns to face Sigmund, hovering in place.

"Who might you be?" She asks.

"Sigmund," He answers. "And you?"

"Emma," She answers, smiling. "Nice to meet you."

"What, no string of titles for her?" You ask, bemused.

"I can be humble when the notion strikes me," He snorts.

"Orek told me that egg was long fossilized," Emma notes. "For once, I'm pleased he was wrong."

"That makes two of us, lass," Sigmund chuckles.

"He also told me you wouldn't be awake for another day," Emma says, turning back to you. "I assume you're feeling better?"

"Something like that," You grin. "What did I miss after I started my nap?"

"Not much," She admits. "Anna fell shortly after you, and by then much of the facility had been evacuated. However, we felt it best to not overstay our welcome, so we grabbed what we could and ran. Tobias tried to carry you back, but your armor nearly killed the poor man. I ended up having to do it, and he took Anna."

The mental image causes you to laugh, though you appreciate the notion all the same.

"Do you have any plans, now that you're back among the living?" Emma asks.

"Perhaps," You nod. "I had planned on..."

"I'd heard something about new plans going into motion after our stop in ," Emma mused. "I'm sure you'll tell me all the details."

"Will do," You nod, waiting for Sigmund to return to your shoulder before turning and leaving.

"Enjoying your stay so far?" You ask as you walk.

"It's a lively place, for certain," Sigmund nods. "Compared to my previous arrangements, I'll gladly accept it."

With that you make your way to the Officers quarters, finding the Major with other officers around a table in the meeting hall. Older men, like him, and veterans of the Great War. However, one man you don't recognize.

Upon your entrance they grow silent, nodding in greeting as the Major beckons you closer. A handful of them gape and stare at Sigmund, bit the Major doesn't bat an eye.

"Orek told me of your recovery," He said, a gentle smile surfacing. "I'm happy to have you back among us."

"I've heard we may have friends in the Republic," You say. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"I believe you've already done a great deal, just by walking through that door," The Major chuckles. "There's someone I'd like for you to meet."

The stranger leans forward in his seat, looking you over with a mixture of awe and reservation. He was a young man compared to the rest, though not as young as you; middle aged, perhaps in his early thirties, late twenties. He had a gentle look about him, his spectacles giving him an intellectual air about him.

"I am Deputy Himmler," He introduced himself. "I represent my friends and comrades back on the mainland within Germany itself."

"Himmler is a member of the German Workers Party," The Major explains. "They are the only political party in the Republic with the intent of doing more than be a colony for France and Britain. To become a proper Germany again."

"And by extension, assist Sweden in returning to its former gloru," Himmler adds. "However, the road ahead will not be a simple or easy one. At least, not as we currently stand. We are consolidating our power, preparing for what is to come. However, with help, we could truly show the people what we could become."

His eyes seem to shine in excitement as he speaks, speaking with the same sort of revere the Major uses in his speeches.

"The world believes the last of the Valkyries are dead," He says. "And the Treaty of Versailles prevents Sweden from ever possessing a Valkyrie Corp again. For Germany, no such rule exists, as it was believed no German Valkyries existed."

Fairly closely, with only a few fairly major changes. Primarily there being one extra combatant and member of the Central powers.

>>45848856

You remain silent, allowing him to continue.

"If you and your sisters suddenly appear, dressed in the colors of Germany, our parties insignia on your shoulders, we would have undeniable proof that Germany still has her pride, that life still breaths within her. We could use you as figureheads for change, and a new era for Germany. One where we are slaves to no man, apologize to no one, and take back what is rightfully ours."

"Doing this will change everything," The Major says. "Up until now we've kept the three of you hidden and away from the world. We've made our mark where we could, but secrecy has been out utmost priority. If we decide to help them, all of that is gone. The world will know about you, and all our old enemies will turn on you with scorn. You and your sisters will become the target of all of Sweden's old enemies, as well as adding Germany's."

Himmler seems annoyed at being cut off, but allows the Major to speak.

"We are behind you in all things, but as always, the choice remains with you," He says.

The other officers wait for you to respond, none of them betraying their inner thoughts. Himmler is more anxious, clearly hoping to have caught your ear and interest.

"I'm sorry, Deputy Himmler, but I need time to consider your offer," You say. "I need to speak with my sisters before I can make a desicion."

"Of course," Himmler nods. "I will be in my cabin when you reach a decision."

With that the man stands and takes his leave. After doing so the room seems to relax, the other releasing a breath of anxiety.

"They're scared of him," Sigmund mutters.

"Not scared, dragon," The Major says, surprising Sigmund. "Concerned. Himmler and his party are right-wind radicals."

"We fought for our Kaiser," One of the officers spoke up. "These men say they wish to restore Germany, yet do so under their own banner."

"We are merely cautious, Sarah," The Major says. "However, despite our caution, I admit we are indebted to them. They have helped us in the past, and continue to do so. And, in truth, helping them could earn us a powerful ally. Something we painfully lack."

He shakes his head.

"Go and speak with your sisters, and Tobias if you wish. He may be more open-minded than the rest of us," The Major suggests.

Thanking him, you turn and begin to make your way out.

"How could you tell they were scared?" You ask once you're out of earshot.

"They trust you, and are more willing to reveal what they truly believe," Sigmund explains. "This Himmler...I could not read so easy. But when he saw us, something stirred within in. Something I hadn't felt in some time."

"What?"

"Hope. Or something akin to it."

You merely nod in reply, deciding to go speak first with...

I honestly don't feel like making this into a "lawful good" quest, but using the the power that hitler wielded for our own ends ? Like restoring Sweden and the Norse religion to its rightful glori ? That I can get on board with, also I would not mind wiping out some Christian heretics along the way, especially if they are form the order

You return to your quarters to find Anna awake, sitting up in bed. Emma sits beside her, chatting idly. However, they both turn to face you when you enter, both pleased to see you. Anna's eyes light up at seeing Sigmund, her mouth hanging open in amazement.

"It hatched!" She squeals, clapping happily.

"It did," Sigmund agreed, flying off your shoulder and coming to sit on the bed. "A pleasure to make your aq-hurk!"

Sigmund, under duress, struggles vainly as Anna hugs him to her chest. However, despite his clear displeasure, her merely grumbles inaudibly rather than try to bite her. It seems he's only willing to pick on someone able to fight back. Instead he relaxes, resigned to his fate.

"I told her what happened," Emma says. "How did things go with the Major?"

"We have a guest onboard," You say. "He's a part of the Republic, a politician I think. He says we can help him fix Germany, and by extension, Sweden."

"What's the catch?" Emma asks, sharp as ever.

"He asks that we proclaim that we're German, to further gain support for his party," You explain. "I thought it best to speak with you before I made a decision."

Both your sisters are surprised at the news, looking at one another uncertainly. Anna's grip on Sigmund relaxes, allowing him to curl up in her lap, slightly more comfortable than before.

"Become German," Emma echoes, as if trying out the phrase. "I never really considered it."

"Me neither," Anna nods.

"Makes three of us," You admit. "The Major says they could be the friend we were looking for. We could stop hiding, stop running, and start fighting. Not in the shadows, but in the open."

"In exchange for citizenship," Emma notes. "Are you really willing to go through with this, Sarah?"

For as long as you could remember you had dreamed of returning to Sweden. Returning home, trying to make a life for yourself. Perhaps even one day start a family.

But none of that happened. Instead, you were dragged from a prison and into a life of danger, with shadows and intrigue. Guided and helped by the remains of the soldiers of the past, from both Germany and Sweden.

Sweden was everything to you.

And yet, here you stand, with Germany ready to help you, not the Empire. The realization makes you sick to your stomach, turning it in knots.

They both look to you. For them, Sweden was just a far away place, not a home. And to you, beyond stories from Matias, it was the same.

In the end you know they'll follow you, no matter what, so the words come easier than you'd expected.

>"If Germany needs us, then German we'll be."
>"We can call ourselves whatever we need to, but I know what I really am."

Sweden has abandoned us, they fucking signed at treaty saying they won't protect Valkyries. You know how the saying goes, the king is dead, Long live the king! We need to create a new Nordic nation witch includes former Germany and Sweden, Denmark, Norway and so on, united under the ultimate aligence to the allknowing and mighty all father

"We're Germanic, not German"
>>

sounds good. We just need to be wary of russian winters, Canadian Paratroopers/guarding any form of hill or ridge, and Jack Churchill being augmented with templar technology.
>>
A bit off-topic but what has happened to Finland?
>>
>>45850538
being forced at gunpoint does not mean abandonment, if Sweden in this setting is anything like the nation of duplicitous dicks it was in reality they would take us in in a heartbeat, lie out of their asses about our existence until the time was right.

Europe has changed great deal in the last eighty years, Sweden used to be a very different place indeed. And if the empire never collapsed, well I could certainly see the "Fuck Versailles sideways" argument a very great deal of sway
>>
>>45850710
You just gave me a very scary mental picture with that last one, the Russian winter is something to be aware of as well, but maby not as much as a problem since we are Fucking Valkyres, I don't think the cold will bother us too much

"We can call ourselves whatever we need to, but I know what I really am," You vow, determined. "I haven't come this far, just to throw my home away."

"A lass with fire," Sigmund chortles quietly. "Perhaps my luck is not so bad."

"Then that's how we'll have it," Emma grins. "German today, Swedish tomorrow."

"Here, here!" Anna agrees, petting a bemused Sigmund.

"I can live with that," You nod. "I still need to speak with the others, so I'll return when I'm done. Sigmund."

Though Anna whines, Sigmund happily leaps free from her grip, flying into the air and landing gently on your shoulder. Giving his neck an appreciative scratch, you big your sisters farewell as you continue on your way. You find Orek in his lab, seated with Tobias as they both go over the many notes scattered across the room.

"Back again?" Orek greets you.

"I come with news," You proclaim.

"Orek told me," Tobias says. "This is about the Deputy, right?"

Deflating, your thunder lost, you grumpily nod before continuing.

"I didn't answer him right away," You admit. "I wanted opinions first. I've spoken with my sisters and the Major. Now I want to know what you two think."

They both look at one another, seemingly conversing with expressions alone. Then, they turn back to you.

"I grew up under the Republic," Tobias explains. "During the inflation my sister and mother went hungry, we went cold, and I was forced to do unfortunate things to keep them safe."

Your taken back by his honesty and openness, but he merely smiles.

Acting as a buffer zone between the Swedish Empire and the Soviet Union. It's currently headed by a pro-independent government, but groups wanting unification either east or west are growing louder.

>>45850905

"The Republic is too divided, to corrupt. Germans are angry, and ashamed," Tobias says. "If someone wants to help them...I say we help them, as they help us."

"Cautiously," Orek adds. "On the right you have men like Himmler, and on the left you have communists. I'd die before I let another country suffer Russia's fate, but I am not so quick to flock to banners, no matter how appealing. If we are to help them, I would simply advise discretion."

You nod, listening to both of them.

>"If they're intending to restore empires, they have my support."
>"I don't trust them either, Doctor, but we need them. As they need us."

What, Jack Churchill with the balmung or other legendary sword looking at us with glee just THINKING about duking it out with a dragon?

Still, something to keep in mind. The Valks have the power of the all father, but there were many heroes in the war and this could lead to interesting scenarios. Under equipped armies getting better gear, fronts getting the support they need, ect.

Hey Sir Argyle, I love your world and this is an interesting quest so far, but just some friendly advice if you don't mind, when we roll it would be nice to know the impact of success caused by our roll, for instance just like the relevant roll and write "44" moderate success, or something. also a bit more choice would be nice, i know that write ins are always an option but tg is lazy if you give to similar options that dose not really feel like a choice, just write " what's your response " or something like that
Hope you don't minde and keep up the good work
>>
>>45851227
That.. is actually horrifying in it's own right. Still, there are a lot of fronts to look at if we think of the war at large and once Siggy grows, we'll be a flying tank of destruction.
>>
>>45850936

"I don't trust them either, Doctor," You admit. "Still, we need them just as much as they need us."

"I hope your right," Orek nods.

"You'll have Germany's full support, I guarantee it," Tobias grins.

"I'll hold you to that," You return his grin with your own. "Best you not disappoint me."

He seems to only enjoy the challenge offered. With that, you bid them both goodbye. With your answer found, you hunt down the Deputy and find him above deck. Your out on the open waves so you enjoy the time in the open air. By now the sun has begun to set, casting a red glow across the sky.

Hearing you approach, Himmler turns to you and smiles.

"Have you spoken with those required?" He asks lightly.

"I have," You nod.

"I'm pleased to hear it. So, Miss Sarah, what is your decision?"

...

>"We'll be German today, if you promise us Sweden tomorrow."
>"We'll do what we must, so long as we need."
>"We'll be your friend, but not your puppet. Remember that."

"We'll be German today, if you promise us Sweden tomorrow," You tell him, crossing your arms. "But know that we're your friend, not your puppet. Are we agreed?"

At that Himmler chuckles, though it's a warm sound.

"You have my vow that I will do all that is in my power to give you Sweden, Miss Sarah," He says with clear vindication, bringing a closed fist to his chest. "As a son of the Allfather, I do so swear."

At your shocked reaction he smiles.

"Germany was the only one to welcome the Empire's change, and we have prospered all the better for it. My men and I will die for you as eagerly as the ones you possess now."

"I...I see," You nod slowly. "Thank you, Mr. Himmler."

"I live to serve," He says. "And please, call me Heinrich."

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves, because I certainly did. Any questions, critiques, or praises/scorn? I'm happy to hear it.

I will admit, though, I'm mildly surprised at the well-received reception of Herr Himmler. It only makes me confident for future arrivals.
