QM Twitter: https://twitter.com/HellbornQuest
Character Sheet: http://pastebin.com/rNg3Yw8m (pictures within) <--Brush up on this if you aren’t familiar with Sierra’s abilities.
Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are the Imperiate – the one true tyrant of the thousand hells. Surely no opponent can match your prowess in combat. Operating off that logic and cunning wordplay, the Great Lynx, the ageless spirit elemental of Lake Superior, has manipulated you into a fight that you technically cannot win.

Technically, you can’t really lose either. So there’s that, you guess.

--

HP: 35/35
PP: 47/47 (Red Rush: Spell Eater, Corrupting Hex)
LW: 15/15 (Prepared Summons: Monster, Tiger, Crabby, Hellhounds x2, Ashwight, Zithether)

Stress: 24
Sanity: 91/100
Bloodlust: Rising

You find yourself confronted by a convincing imitation - a duplicate of yourself. Pale skin bearing black fissures, spines and clawed tail, heat waving off shoulders, and grey, crooked horns. Every detail mirrors your own, except the voice. The voice is all wrong.

Evil Sierra’s cocky grin, her hateful eyes, everything about her makes you seethe within yourself. It’s wrong. It’s too wrong, seeing your copy. It’s like identity theft, except with every intimate detail possible, and the motive isn’t to steal your money, it’s to kill you. Stupid lake cats and their stupid word plays.

Your clone raises her hands to the heavens, a vindictive smile on her stupidly smug face. “Hell yeah, that’s right, it’s freaking evil Sierra!” she calls out to you, her voice sounding nearly a full octave higher than where it’s supposed to be. “I’m gonna kick your ass and cut your fucking throat open!”

This will end one way. With blood. If Nega-Sierra has blood, even.
>>
>>45847966

Words boil automatically out of you. “Not if I rip your fucking throat out first you won’t!” you retort, wrestling your handgun out of its holster.

Your doppleganger smiles sharply, her hand snapping to the butt of the rifle hanging from her back. You feel a touch of will, and in an instant, a shroud of darkness grows from the mist all around the tidal pools, dimming the ambient light. The enchanted G98 – your copy has a copy of your dad’s shadow-generating rifle.

The shadows converge onto your doppleganger as if of its own accord, and Nega-Sierra is swallowed up in suddenly dense, writhing blackness at the same time you level at her position and fire off three rapid shots.

The darkness flees away at your gunshots, rubber-banding back to its prior position. But evil Sierra has vanished, and in her place lies a monstrous slug thing the size of a pickup truck, bristling with armored plates, fleshy tentacles, and a crushing jaw. It’s an armored slogbuh – your opponent even has your same summons. And as far as Crabby is concerned, you know bullets only serve to make him angry. Worse, since the shots struck flesh, they failed to produce the grasping shadow tendrils to annoy your foe. [Evil Crabby: 61/67 HP]
You know from experience that angry slogbuhs spit acid glue at people that bother them. You’re already dodging to the side when Evil Crabby lunges forward hocks a thick gob of organic napalm in your direction. It splatters and steams on the rock you were standing on a second ago – you scrabble up the side of another, taller rock, pulling your feet up out of the range of the slogbuh’s snapping jaws and flailing tentacles.

The slogbuh gives a deep whale-moan as it begins scaling the side of your rock, already snarling up another loogie of acid just for you. (+3 Stress: 27)

I was wondering that too. she has our weaknesses right, so maybe its time to nut up and face one of our fears by burying this bitch in it.
>>
So counter Evil Crabby with Crabby, and then planning on using lightball or fire to dispel shadows should Nega-Sierra seek to use them against you. Also feeling shadows to discern Evil Sierra's position.

>>45848316
Shadows benefit you as well as her, you know. Your armor and a lot of your powers depend on them.

>>45848154
Nearby cover in this case is rocks and tidal pools. There's really nothing flammable, unless you retreat up the coast a good ways and into the woods.

Hit Evil Crabby with Blood Curse, maybe as part of jumping on him from above and raking through him with our claws. Then summon our own Crabby to keep it occupied. Without the curse ours should be able to manage just fine.

Then we should probably get away from it and try to track down Nega-Sierra.
>>
>>45848432
That would be pretty horrifying. Seeing yourself drown by your own hands. Still, if she manages not to freak her shit, it might help a little bit. Or make it worse, I dunno shit about psychology.

Screw this. You’ve got to cut the head off the snake, not play with its tail.

With a flare of rage, you fill your hands with negative energy and take a running jump off the top of your perch. (-2PP: 45) You sail over the slogbuh’s snapping maw and land bodily on its back.

You sink your corrupting claws into its flesh even as the monster writhes beneath you, its armored plates melting and peeling at the touch of your razored edges. (5 corrupting/slashing dmg, Evil Crabby: 56 HP; +1 PP: 46 (Dark Heart)) You tear flesh and dig into hot muscle, the riveting scent of it driving you wild. You snarl and connect your will to its blood, forcing a curse into its system. (-4 PP: 42)

The slogbuh moans in pain, and rolls over in an attempt to grind you to a paste underneath its weight. You bid adieu and spring clear – in midair, you call forth your own Slogbuh to finish the job. You land in a crouch, and out of a bleching cloud of smoke and shadow rushes Crabby Classic, heaving himself forward and smashing into Evil Crabby’s vulnerable side.

Crabby foams with acid and chews into his opposite’s flesh, wrestling bodily against the other slogbuh. Evil Crabby wraps around and tries to snap at Crabby Classic’s limbs, but whatever bites of damage he inflicts are eclipsed by Crabby’s mauling. Bright red blood shines on Crabby’s mouth as he continues savaging the disadvantaged creature.

Crabby has all the advantage he needs in his fight. You just need to worry about yours.

Evil Sierra’s got your powers, and she threw up darkness to use it against you. But darkness is a two-way street. You concentrate on the shadows, sensing for any inexplicable distortion. And then you feel it. To your right, up high.

Evil Sierra crests a nearby rock before a shallow pool of water, shadow tendrils waving behind her, her rifle shouldered and aimed. “Say hi to Nev for me!” she shouts, pulling the trigger.
>>
>>45849603
You’re just a split second too slow. Your heart leaps in your chest, and you cringe against the forthcoming pain. (+4 Stress: 31) But you don’t take a rifle bullet to the chest. Your nerves light up inside you with incredibly sensation, and the world slows to accommodate your panic. (-8 PP: 34)

Evil Sierra’s grin tweaks upward. Evil Crabby freezes mid-recoil, with Crabby Classic’s jaws tearing a boney plate from his side.

And then ega-Sierra’s nega-rifle coughs out a flash, and a spinning bullet barrels out toward you at the speed of a rushing train. But the speed of a rushing train is a whole hell of a lot slower than a bullet should be.

You need to move, but you feel like you’re made of lead. Mustering all your strength, you shove off of the ground with your feet and shadow, urging yourself out of its path.

The world speeds up again, and you fling wildly backward. You sail through the air and land flat on your face in cold, ankle-deep water. You cough and stand up out of it - Evil Sierra cycles the bolt of her rifle, intending to take another shot from her position – but the bolt jams. “Fucking Matrix BS,” she grumbles to herself, attempting to unstick the lever.

Belph is our weakness, and arguably, the least developed of our powers. Inflict pain will severely hamper her mobility, and allow us to get close. She has a huge ass WW2 rifle drawn, so if we go CQC we'll be able to slice her up like a evil, shadowy pig who kinda looks like us.

Some taunting coupled with a Terrorizing Glare ought to throw her off, I'd wait on Inflict Pain until we can take better advantage of any openings.

Cunning is good and all, but strength and speed has its place. Time to close the gap.

You charge Nega-Sierra’s position, summoning Tiger as you go and sending him off at an oblique angle. The shalbaan lopes off into the rocks perpendicular to your own course. “I’ve been me for eighteen years,” you yell to your opponent. “Seriously think you’ve got a chance?”

With a powerful jump, you launch off the ground. And like an extra out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you plant your next step on empty air to propel yourself even higher. (-4 PP: 30) You fling out your wings and stretch your shadow over them, and descending gliding toward doppelganger with claws at the ready.

Nega-Sierra casts her rifle aside and scowls. “Pfft, with your track record?” she shouts back, bundling darkness between you and her. A high-pitched tone sends the shadows into a roiling knot of razored edges, a shredding net to catch you. (Nega-Sierra: 32 PP)

Your track record might not be perfect, but if there’s one thing you’re good at, it’s killing crap. And screwing yourself over. Both of which are pluses given the circumstances.

Anticipating the shredding ball of blackness, you shove forward a fist and let out a great flare of will. (-1 PP: 29) Your power shines forth as a wavering corona of shining white fire. The heatless flames vaporize the greater part of Evil Sierra’s trap, and you sail through, sharp shadows nicking your face and limbs and cutting through your jeans, but skittering harmlessly from your bony carapace and chainmail.
>>
>>45850953

When you land in front of your quarry, you flash terror at her through your gaze (-2 PP: 27). Evil Sierra glances the attack to the side with her will, but that’s when you hit her with the real attack. You whip a tendril out from behind you, on the tip of it a compressed ball of invisible negative energy. (-5 PP: 22)

It catches Nega-Sierra solidly on the shoulder and sends her reeling, her pale crown flickering failingly at the overcharge of emotion. You press the attack and slash at her while she’s down, landing a long ragged gash down the side of her back. Clawtips glint off her chainmail as much as they bite through and reach flesh beneath. (Evil Sierra: HP: 29/35)

Suddenly, her tendrils wrap around your ankles and yank your feet out from under you. At the same time she recovers and springs back to counterattack, scowling ferociously, her claws bared.

Shock tendrils bitch!

Shock Tendrils: Sierra's shadow-self conducts and emits electricity, and serves as an insulator against electrocution provided favorable lighting conditions. If multiple targets are hit with an electrical shock from her tendrils, the ensuing damage is distributed evenly among them. Electrical damage temporarily disrupts magic and motor functions in many creatures. Physical Characteristic. Armor: ~6 (Electrical) Damage: 1d7 (Electrical) Cost: 2 PP per zap. Type: Electrical. Range: Touch. [VE+IN]

Keep her off her feet, then close in for more CQC!
>>
>>45850982
Explode. It won't hurt her, but it'll dispel the shadows and catch her off guard. Try to set her up for Tiger's attack in the confusion.
>>

You’re flat on your back with an angry clone of yourself coming to kill you. Not that you’ll take that lying down. Tiger will be here in a second. You just need to make the opening.

Using all your limbs, you bounce back up to your feet, and throw forward your tendrils at Evil Sierra, striking in at her flanks. High voltage power conducts along your shadow and into your clone. (-2 PP: 20)

Her eyes go wide a second before it hits. And then it does absolutely nothing. You feel the electrical surge conduct harmlessly around Evil Sierra through her watery shadow-self.

Wait. You’re immune to electricity? You both take a second to be surprised.

But Evil Sierra is less surprised than you, and she wraps her tendrils about yours. Taken off guard, you are unprepared when she unfixes the gaping hole in her heart. A horrible draining force rips a great portion of the remaining power from your body and draws it into your opponent. (-10 PP: 10) (+5 Stress: 36) (Nega-Sierra: +7, 39 PP)

You fight to untangle your shadow from hers, but it’s like trying to free hair that’s knotted together.

With otherworldly power, Evil Sierra blasts you back with a gush of shadows. (Nega-Sierra -4, 35 PP) You fly back until you snag at the end of your shadow-self, still caught in your clone’s own tendrils. But instead of letting you fall onto the rocks below, she hurls you to the side, swinging you through the air at the end of an ever-more strained connection of shadow.

The world becomes a blur, sense of up and down tumbling together as one. You flail your wings to catch air, to give yourself some leverage to escape her hold. But with your shadow-self tangled and held captive, your wings are useless.

And then you sense a great burn of magic doubling Nega-Sierra’s strength, even tripling it, and your course angles upward. (Nega-Sierra: 30 PP) You brace yourself to be slammed against the ground, but then your shadow snaps free and you go flying like a rock out of a sling.
>>
>>45852380

Upside down and arcing high, you watch weightlessly as Evil Sierra wrestles with a protective Tiger. He locks his teeth around her arm, which ignites with hellfire. With burning claws, she peels your summon apart like cheap saran wrap. (Tiger: 0/20 HP; Nega-Sierra: 27/35 HP, 26 PP) (+3 Stress: 39)

Crap.

But with your shadow free, you’re able to get it between your wings, and catch the air. At least until you leave the cloud of thinning darkness Nega-Sierra called forth with her rifle. The foggy mist is too bright, too light-diffusing to allow your shadow to maintain impermeability. You tumble roughly out of the air. You fling out your claws to catch yourself, and you smash into a collection of low, jagged rocks. (-7 HP: 28; +7 Stress: 46)

You tumble roughly over the ground until you grind to a halt. You’re dazed, but manage to get back to your feet. Your hands are scraped and bleeding, your jeans have the knees ripped out of them, and the left side of your shadow feels oddly numb and unresponsive.

The moment of reprieve is short-lived.

Nega-Sierra comes darting out after you, leaping from one rock to the next, making good use of her shadowed wings to enhance her parkour. Her face is covered in blood and her eyes are wild and wide, her own handgun clutched in hand. (Nega-Sierra: 33 HP)

You don’t have much place to retreat, with nothing more than a strip of rocky shoreline and Lake Superior at your back. More worrying though is that you’re running low on magic – you feel the dwindling reserve in the center of your chest. One more soul-sapping grab from your doppelganger, and you’ll be without any power whatsoever.

Even if she’s just pretending to be you, you realize you’re sort of more dangerous than you were giving yourself credit for.

>>
I have no idea what we should do here. Does our sphere of illumination require focus to maintain after summoning? It's got a low power cost and might be able to slightly counteract our evil self's shadow powers. On the downside, it'd counteract ours as well.

>>45852788

That's up to you to guess, I suppose.

So it looks like we're shooting at her and throwing out the hex to break her magic items. And if she gets close, then you'll try for a blinding strike and a power drain attack.

You do have a few landmastery powers that are worth considering. For example, there's the spell supercharge, and there's the buffed summoning.

I wonder how our blood tastes, since Sierra tends to wax poetic on the scent and taste of her preys blood but her own she brushes off as just the smell of blood.

OK, who wants to smack negaSierra with a land magic supercharged depression ball and then summon up a supercharged Zithether to fuck her up? That'd probably do the job.

Or I guess supercharge monster and supercharge a PP drain.

yes and as with Nega-sierra, unless her crowns failure was due to her being a construct and not real, it's not a true immunity and can be overloaded. Just saying there are many unknowns and subtleties that make supercharging the ghost that eats negative emotions out of peoples faces is not the best idea without proper testing.

There's an admittedly high chance he died in there.

Evil Sierra may be coming in fast, but running high leaves her exposed. You reach for your pistol, only to find it missing from its holster – your eyes catch sight of it laying on the beach a few yards away. The movement doesn’t escape your doppelganger’s attention, and she pauses in her advance to take aim at you.

You roll to the side, evading a flurry of shots and bounding out of range of the shadows that leap up from the misses to grab you. You snatch up your pistol with the side of your shadow that’s still listening to your brain, and snap back a couple shots of your own at Nega-Sierra.

One’s a solid hit in the chest that knocks the wind out of her. (-7 HP; Nega-Sierra: 26 HP) She stops and brings up her shielding charm to block the rest of your bullets – tendrils writhe out of the magical wall of force until it disappears, at which point they instantly vanish away.

The return fire you absorb in an identical manner, flinching away from the bullets smacking into thin air just a few feet in front of your face.

After the gunfight, the both of you are out of ammunition. But when she goes for the quick reload, you fake her out by tracing a pentagram in the air in front of you with a claw. You mark each point of the star with a drill of power, and then ignite the geometric sigil with a concentration of willpower. (-4 PP: 6)

A ghostly white hex flashes in the air before you, leaving the smell of ozone in its wake as it rushes forward. It flies straight to collide with Nega-Sierra. The line work snaps when it strikes, breaking over her with a sharp gunshot-like snap, and your doppelganger lets out a scream – you can feel her pain from where you stand.

It’s not hard to see why. Deep burns are branded in the shape of the pentagram over her flesh, singed in exactly as it struck her.
>>
>>45854082

Her chainmail sparks with broken magic, as does her handgun, which has been reduced to melted slag steel and simmering mist. (-9 HP, -5 PP; Nega-Sierra: 17 HP, 21 PP)

Nega-Sierra is made of magic. Go figure. If only you started off with that one.

But she’s not down for the count. Evil Sierra slides down off the rock and stalks toward you, eyes alight with burning energy, claws ready at her sides.

“Just – you know you just kill people, right? You’re the common denominator. You’re a fucking murderer,” she says, her voice shaking, hate crackling almost visibly around her.

Blood drips from a long cut on her cheek – it smells like copper. It smells like your own blood. The smell of it in the air with smoke and burned flesh, it’s just like that night. The night with Meckor. (-1 Sanity: 90) (+4 Stress: 50)

“You know I’m right,” she continues, spite smoldering in her eyes. “I’m the only one who’s – who knows. That’s why you’re... gonna murder me too, yeah? Every year you live, more fucking people die Just like Alexis, or that guy on the roof. All those... fucking people. Everybody. Can’t have anything that reminds you about that, right?”

You can smell it now like you’re back there. You can see them. The whispers. You didn’t know it then, but you heard them in the night. Your hands become unsteady. You know it’s a trick, but is it really a trick if it’s true? (-2 Sanity: 88) (+3 Stress: 53)

Your clone – the doppelganger or the shade, whatever it is, it needs to be destroyed. She’s not real. She’s a liar. But you grow doubtful. Won’t killing her prove her point? (-1 Sanity: 87)

You hold back from laying waste to your opponent. Maybe you don’t need to kill her. Maybe you can have the moral high ground. You’re not a murderer when you have a choice about it. “Shut up,” you tell Evil Sierra. “If you don’t want to die, just shut up. That’s what this is about, right? We fight as long as I choose. And you’re sort of me, so if you want, we’ll be done.”

She gives a rueful laugh. “I literally exist to fight you,” she says. “Everything I am, it’s your fault. It’s who you are – you’re a mistake. A parasite. And I’m like fucking Agent Anderson, I’m gonna cure the fuck out of you.”

She continues approaching, but you stand your ground, ready to end it all. “You’re not going to win,” you say. “I haven’t even touched my landmagic yet. Only person who’s murdering you is yourself.”

Evil Sierra scowls at you. “Yeah, sure, I’m killing me. Like that makes fucking sense,” she says. “You’re holding back cause I’m you. You’d kill anybody but yourself. Fuck the price. Fuck everything.”
>>
>>45854892

“Last shot,” you warn, a sick feeling in your stomach as you contemplate executing this clone of yourself. Killing your reflection. (-1 Sanity: 86) (+4 Stress: 57)

“You know what Ranthix wasn’t saying, right?” she asks, stopping in her tracks and grinning maniacally at you. “Meckor knew it, too. That’s why he blamed you. Cause it’s your fault Mom died. It’s why Dad ran off – cause every time he looked - ”

Nega-Sierra’s words are cut off by a silvery steel bolt plunging deep into the center of her chest. Her eyes go vacant, and she keels over, dead. (-1 Sanity: 85; +3 Stress: 60) Fog wafts off her body, her form slowly beginning to dissolve back to mist.

Several yards behind you, Isaac lowers his crossbow. He wears an inscrutable expression. “Are you all right?”

A dull weight settles in the pit of your stomach as you stare at Evil Sierra’s disintegrating corpse. “I should’ve just killed her,” you say. “She was never going to give up.”

Isaac walks nearer to stand with you. “You wanted to do the right thing. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

You feel tired as the adrenaline leaves you, but a bitterness remains. “You messed up the whole dumb duel thing, you know that, right?” Maybe you shouldn’t have let Isaac come along with you after all.

But Isaac doesn’t agree with that idea. “You already won. The mimic wouldn’t have survived another hex.”

A whisper catches on the wind. “Fire within and fire without,” comes the voice of the Great Lynx. “Fury mingled with compassion.” The scaly, feline form of the spirit appears out on the water, stepping closer to you and Isaac, it’s eyes light and judging. “But you did not seal the testimony with blood.”

You sense that lake cat is not pleased. You’re not sure you’re pleased, either.

“Few more seconds, I would have,” you reply, wincing as you try to flex your shadow. A sharp sting of pain advises you against it. You must’ve overextended or something. “Sometimes I get things to kill stuff for me. That’s the whole Imperiate thing in a nutshell. Anyway, I’m sure you smell it, but blood’s all over the place.”

As if to illustrate your point, Crabby hauls himself overtop a ridge of rock, his maw dripping with thick blood, a number of glistening cuts and slashes over his hulking body. He lets out a fatigued, but victorious moan.

The Great Lynx scents the air with a tongue, a surprisingly reptilian gesture coming from what is ostensibly a cat with a long neck and spines down its back. Its eyes narrow at the proof of blood. “I am quenched on the truth of the evidences. Let this be a foretaste of what is to come,” the spirit pronounces, standing up to its full height in the water.

Your mouth twitches upward in a smile. You did it.

“Darkness to match that of the blood spilt upon my shores,” the Lynx continues. “Fire to consume the bones of those that oppress you. Rage to seed rivers red. A gift I offer; a permission I bestow. Let a rebuke to the heavens and its stormings be found with Sierra, One True Tyrant of Hell, so long it thus is willed.”

When the Lynx’s whispering speech concludes, it turns in the water and walks slowly back out into the lake. Each step it takes, it becomes a little bit more transparent. At first it looks like a ghost, but slowly its outline blends into the surrounding fog, little more than a trick of the light.

Isaac watches the spirt go with a critical eye. He has doubts.

Borislav appears with Reeber at his side. The hound doesn’t stay there, though. Reeber shoots forward to meet you. You’re too tired to greet him properly.

You rub Reeber’s head with a bloodied claw. It’s your blood, you guess. Weird it didn’t turn to mist. “Magic, am I right?” you mutter to him. He doesn’t reply.

The fog begins to clear away at the insistence of a cool breeze. As visibility improves, you spot Ranthix standing up on the bluff by the silver landwell. He hefts his M60 up over one shoulder, and jerks his head toward the well. “THE BOON IS YOURS, SPAWNLING,’ he shouts, his voice carrying off into the distance.

You’d better go claim your prize. With Isaac’s support, you start making your way to the well. Turns out things hurt more than you thought they did.

Borislav stays behind and sits down on the beach. He watches the Great Lynx as it fades away into the distance.

But you have other concerns. You won today’s fight, but you haven’t forgotten the fights to come.

Not really. Corithis was the Imperiate, and if Ranthix is to be beleved, she literally couldn't die unless she let herself. There are only two possibilities that tidbit leaves. A: Corithis killed herself to save her daugher/daughters by means of a binding demonic deal with Hassatur to allow us to live, or B: Ranthix is full of shit.

But that second option is borderline heretic, so I'm going with A, personally.
