After everything got sorted out and the people running the train began to sort through the damage, it became clear that there were a lot of things that needed to be fixed. There were wounded of course, but between the time it had taken you to get back and the army garrison on the train the worst of the wounded had either already died or been taken care of so that you didn’t need to help.

That meant that Morrigan volunteered you and Cath to help fix what you could. Mostly you did minor things, like fixing brake lines and double checking patches on important systems. There wasn’t any major damage to the engine thankfully, so you didn’t get a chance to work on that. You still got the chance to help work on a few new things over the entire time though, so things you had learned in books now had some practical experience to go along with them.

As you’re dismissed by the train crew to head back to your room, you look over to Cath. Both of you are still caked in various forms of dirt, grime and battle residue, not helped in the least by the time you spent crawling through various parts of the train.

She looks back at you and nods, raising one grease streaked arm and examining it.

“Dirty,” she says.

You nod in agreement, looking down at your own hands which are caked in some form of lubricant.

“Should go clean,” Cath continues motioning towards the train.

“Where?” you ask her.

“On the train, car in the back, showers,” she says in her soft voice. Cath still doesn’t talk a lot, but in the past few months she’s started using her words a bit more. Still in short sentences at most, but you don’t talk a lot either so it’s not like you’re short conversation.

Giving yourself a bit of a sniff you decide that Cath is right, you should go and get cleaned up. You might not be as fastidious about it as Bellona is, but since you’ve moved to MMS you’ve gotten used to at least not actively smelling like the aftermath of a firefight or workshop spill.

“Let’s go,” you say to her, not knowing exactly where you need to go.

She nods again, turning to climb back on the train. You follow her, noting a few bullet holes in the side of the cars but nothing that will impair your ability to make it to Chicago. You both head back to your rooms to grab a change of clothes. Stepping quietly into yours you find Nem fast asleep on her bed, her gear tossed into one of the upper bunks. It looks like she hasn’t had time to clean up or maybe she just didn’t care. You manage to grab your clothes without disturbing her and step back out into the hallway to find Cath waiting for you.

She tilts her head back towards the rear of the train and you follow her. You don’t make it too far, as she suddenly stops and gestures towards one of the doors off to the side. Opening the door you find a small bathroom and shower combination. It looks very small, even for what you’re used to. You look to Cath, then back at the shower. There’s no way that the both of you are going to fit into that small space. Then again you aren’t sure how long your shower will take in the first place.

Cath simply shrugs at you. She doesn’t seem to care who goes first either.

You look at Cath and gesture towards the shower. You’ll let her go first. She cocks her head at you, asking if you’re sure. You nod, which gets you the barest hint of a smile from her. Seeing as how she’s usually not all that emotional, it’s pretty good.

Cath heads inside the room, shutting the door behind her with a small thunk. Thankfully this part of the train doesn’t appear to be damaged at all, which means that you soon hear the sound of water running. You settle down against the wall next to the door, waiting on your turn. After only a few minutes you feel a jerk, the first signs of the train starting to move. You look up as the train starts to pick up speed, apparently everything has been fixed now and you’re back on track. Figuratively at least, the train never actually came off the track.

Just when you’re starting to wonder if Cath is doing ok even with the rocking of the train, you see a familiar face coming down the hallway. Bellona looks like she’s coming to use the shower just like you are. Spotting you as she approaches she waves, giving you a big smile.

“Will!” she says as she walks up next to you, “Are you here to clean up too?”

You nod, gesturing to your hands and dirty clothes.

“I smell,” you say to her.

Bellona wrinkles her nose a bit but then laughs. “Not any more than the rest of us I suppose,” she says.

It’s here that you notice that the water has stopped running and turn to glance at the door.

“You waiting for them to finish?” Bellona asks.

You nod.

“Want me to wash your back for you?” Bellona says with a grin, even as Cath opens the door to the shower.

Cath and Bellona share a look, then Cath lets out a grunt and turns to look at you.

“Shower’s empty,” she says, “Bit tight. Might need help.”

“Help?” you say to Cath, tilting your head.

Cath nods to you and you nod back.

“Ok,” you say to her, heading back into the shower.

Even as you start to get undressed you hear Bellona and Cath whisper something between them, you aren’t sure what as you can’t hear it through the shut door. It goes on long enough that by the time Cath comes in the door you’re already turning on the water and have the little hanging sheet closed.

The water is pretty cold at first, but then you notice that it starts to warm up a little bit. It feels pretty nice and you get your hair wet as you hear Cath step up to the outside of the shower.

“Will?” she says softly.

“Yes?” you say to her.

“Wash your back?” she says. Her voice seems even more quiet than normal as she says this, though there’s something odd in her tone.

“Ok,” you say to her, trying to figure out what needs to be done as you turn around in the small cube. Normally you just scrub yourself down with a cloth and water, but the grease is pretty thick today. Turning the shower so it won’t spray out onto Cath you grab the cloth and then go to open the curtain.

Suddenly you stop, remembering what happened with Mary in the shower. She said you weren’t supposed to see girls naked… but she didn’t say anything about them not seeing you naked. So it should be fine if Cath washes your back. Then you open the curtain and see Cath waiting for you.

As you open the curtain and reach out to hand Cath the wash cloth you see her face turn red and her eyes dart up and down. You tilt your head at her as she seems to be stunned for the moment.

“Cath?” you say, still holding out the cloth.

You do so, then you feel Cath begin to scrub your back. It’s a bit odd, but not unpleasant as her hands rub you clean of sweat and dirt. She seems to take her time, as you normally take rather quick showers. Finally she’s done, the cloth dropping away from you.

As you turn around you see Cath holding out the cloth, her eyes turned away.

“Here,” she says to you.

“Thank you Cath,” you say to her, taking the cloth and going back to finish washing the rest of your body.

She just nods her head and then steps back into the small changing area as you shut the cloth again. Once you do you hear the door open and then close again. You soon finish up and dry yourself, getting dressed in your spare set of clothes.

Opening the door you find Bellona waiting for her turn in the shower, Cath nowhere in sight.

“All done?” she says.

“Yes,” you say, “Your turn.”

Bellona smiles and nods, “Thanks Will,” she says.

As she steps inside the room she pauses, looking back at you with a smile on her face.

“Hey Will, wanna help me wash my back?”

You look at Bellona as she stands in the doorway and ponder her question in your own way. Admittedly the shower is pretty small, you barely had enough room to turn around inside of it. That meant that Cath helping wash your back was actually a good thing for the most part. You do like to be helpful and Bellona has been a good friend and comrade.

On the other hand Mary said that you aren’t supposed to see girls naked unless they say it’s ok. She said it wasn’t very likely, but if they did you could. So if Bellona thinks that it’s ok for you to see her naked then you could wash her back for her.

You turn around, getting a view of Bellona’s naked back. Her hair is wet and clings closely to her back, meaning you’ll have a bit of an issue with cleaning her back until you deal with it. Remembering last time you take off your shirt once more and step forwards. Bellona brought more of the shampoo stuff this time, so first you use that on her hair, washing it carefully like she taught you the first time. She shivers a little bit when you touch her scalp like last time, but she doesn’t say anything. When you finish with her hair you take the cloth and move to apply it to her back.

The instant you touch her you feel her body twitch, as if pulling away from you. You stop, looking at her from the side.

“K-keep going Will,” she says softly, nothing at all like her normal voice.

You nod, then move your hand against her back slowly. Bellona shivers if you move too fast, so you end up taking a good bit of time simply to wash her back for her. She seems tense the whole time and doesn’t say anything until you finish.

“T-thank you Will,” she says as she takes the cloth and turns back to the shower.

“Welcome,” you say to her, turning back around and getting your shirt back on.

“You… you can go now if you want,” she says, “But you don’t have to.”

“I’m hungry,” you tell Bellona, “I’m going to go get food.”

Bellona pauses and then lets out a brief sigh and then a chuckle.

You nod, even though you aren’t sure if Bellona can see you or not and then you open the door and head outside. Knowing your way to the dining car pretty well by now, you make your way forwards. Along the way you see only a few people and a couple soldiers still in full battle gear. You don’t think you’re going to get attacked again, but then again you didn’t think you were going to get attacked in the first place.

You finally make your way to the dining car, finding it rather changed from before. It seems to have been the sight of a firefight, with many more bullet holes than average through its walls and most of the glass shot out of the windows. There are a few people about, but not as many as before. However you do spot one person of note, Mary seems to be sitting in one of the booths that still has a window along with a book and the remains of a meal in front of her.

“Will,” she says in a happy tone, “It’s good to see you.” She looks up and down at you. “You look clean, did you take a shower already?”

You nod at her, taking a seat across from her and picking up one of the menu’s in front of you. Looking it over briefly you decided to just order a “Cheeseburger” when the waiter comes over to take your order. He looks a little different this time, not wearing the fancy jacket and having some bandages on his face.

“I would’ve expect you to come eat first Will,” Mary continues after he leaves, “you usually like your food more than you do getting clean.”

You shrug. “Cath told me, went with her.”

You think about going back to your room… but then you remember how small it is and how you don’t actually have a bed. Sure you slept in Bellona’s bed with her before, but you don’t know if she’s going to be there right now or not. She could be out doing other things or already asleep and you don’t want to wake her up. Morrigan said it was ok if you woke her up, but she didn’t say it was ok to sleep with her.

“No,” you say, looking at the stack of books that Mary brought with her, “Can I stay here with you?”

“Of course,” she says to you, looking where you are, “Do you want to read something?”

You nod. You like reading, it’s calming and you don’t have to work very hard except to understand what they’re saying sometimes.

“Hmm…” says Mary, flipping through the stack of books, “I didn’t bring anything technical with me this time…”

You wait for Mary to pick out a book for you. You’ve liked what she picked so far so you trust her to pick out something good for you.

“…here,” she finally says, picking out a book from the pile, “It might be a bit advanced for you but I think you’ll like it.”

You take the book from her, looking at the cover. It says “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” You wonder who that could be.

Opening up the book you read, “You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter…” It takes you a little bit to understand what they’re saying, but eventually you get rather into the book.

Several hours later you finally look up as Mary closes her book.

“Do you like it Will?” she asks as you mark your place.

“They talk funny,” you say to her, “But it’s pretty good.”

Mary just smiles at you.

“It’s getting late though, we should go to bed. I think we’re going to be on duty tomorrow.”

You nod at her, wondering where you’re going to sleep.

Mary notices like she always does.

You shake your head no.

“Well I could see why you wouldn’t want to wake up Morrigan, she’s not exactly the most graceful sleeper,” she says as she stands and starts to grab her books.

You shake your head, remembering the few times you’ve had to wake her up. Especially the time she threw her pillow at you.

“Nem isn’t much better, not that she wakes up easily,” Mary continues, “You slept with Bellona last night right?”

“Yes,” you say to her.

“Don’t want to sleep with her again?” Mary asks you.

You just shrug. You don’t like to bother people.

“Hmm,” she says to you, “were you going to sleep on the floor?”

“Maybe,” you say to her, “It’s not nice.”

“No, no it’s not,” she says, standing up with her pile of books, “Though I’m sure we’ve both slept in worse places.”

“Yes,” you say, remembering several of the very bad places you’ve slept in the past.

“Well let’s not do that again,” she says, leading you down the hallway towards your rooms.

“Where should I go then?” you ask her.

“Well, I suppose you could sleep with me tonight,” she says, “If you don’t mind.”

“Ah… no,” you say to her, “Do you?”

“I wouldn’t offer if I didn’t mean it Will,” she says to you, “So don’t worry about it.”

You follow Mary the rest of the way to her room, where you find Cath and Sarah already asleep.

“Come on Will,” Mary says as she starts to take of parts of her clothes, “let’s get to bed.”

“Ok,” you say, letting Mary finish undressing and crawl into the lower bunk. She finishes quickly and then climbs in, leaving room for you to do the same. You take off your boots and belt before climbing in like you did with Bellona. At least until Mary gestures at you to climb in a different way, facing her.

“Come here Will,” she says, wrapping her arms around you and pulling your head to her shoulder this time, “let’s see how well you cuddle.”

“Cuddle?” you say to her.

“Just put your arms around me,” she says, “then go to sleep.”

“Ok,” you say to her, putting your arms around her back.

“No… no… there,” says Mary, pushing your hands down around her waist.

You nod into her shoulder.

“Good boy Will,” she says to you, her hand stroking your hair, “You comfy?”

“Warm,” you say, feeling yourself starting to drift off to sleep.

“Good,” she says, “Go to sleep.”

You nod, letting your mind drift off to sleep as Mary’s breathing and the sound of the train rock you to sleep.
