You are Adrian Brown, a twenty five year-old third-year medical student living an otherwise normal American life in search of employment. That was until you woke up inside a direct and demon-infested hospital with four other victims of short-term memory loss. Together, the five of you managed to somehow survive by negotiating with demons and defeating those that were not so amicable. And upon escaping, the all of you realized that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Task Force 666 a multinational organization dedicated to combating hostile demons and those that would use them for ill intentions. And the hellhole you just went through? That was your ‘job interview’, one that you passed with flying colors. When properly offered employment as an agent among the ranks, you accepted without too much hesitation or second thoughts. Duty to humanity and whatnot.

You are now a Devil Summoner in the service of the Task Force, and the de-facto leader of East Coast Operations Rookie Team Three. It is your duty to protect mankind from all threats involving the demonic, but how you choose to carry out your orders is entirely up to you. The choices you make shall not only affect those around you, but the fate of the entire world itself…

[???]

You must’ve fallen asleep at one point. Because the last thing you remember is sitting down in the car, and then the next thing you know, you aren’t where you last were.

Once again, you find yourself standing in landscape of perpetual white. The familiar scent of open earth and hyacinth flowers fill your nose, and the moist soil underneath your feet shift about your weight. And no matter how many times you try, you can’t see beyond two feet in front of you. The fog is too damn thick to make out anything.

What was it that Ian Flemming said? Something out of Goldenfinger…once is just happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.

This is the third time that you’ve been pulled into wherever the hell this place is. Somewhere where ‘forgotten things are laid to rest’. That’s as much as you can remember from other two times you’ve been here, and the women that spoke to you. The dreams…no, not dreams. Memories. They were memories.

Or were they both? Dreams are, after all, an aggregation of memories, thoughts and unrestrained imagination. And as far as you can remember reading back at the barracks, you do remember that some demons were capable of invading the dreams of others.

But that wasn’t the case here, if they were telling the truth. “Wanderer”, they called you, a traveler to this ‘limbo between inexistence and existence’.
New World mumbo-jumbo aside, it seems like you’re in another fine mess. All that’s left is for some feminine ghostly apparition to come and molest you yet again. What first you thought to be nothing but mere erotic dreams filled with the recent subliminal dusting of your new job is actually a supernatural visitation of some sorts.

And even though you know that something demonic is happening here, you don't even have any of your own demons to aid you if things turn ugly.

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Suddenly the breeze shifts, and the fog comes billowing around you with a hellish scream. The scent of the hyacinths turn sweeter, too sweet to be pleasing any more to the senses. You gag violently as the smell turns putrid, insufferably sweet, the cloying scent of purification and rot.

You’re no stranger to this. You’ve been to the morgue before, seen the dead bodies of humans and animals laid out on the table. But that was in a sterile environment, devoid of anything obstructive for the academia. There is no formaldehyde or lemon-scented surgery masks to cover it up.

The scent of death.

As you struggle to get your gag reflex under control, you notice a shape emerge from out of the rushing fog. It is human shaped, that much you can tell, but it’s as if a shroud of fog masks its form and movement. Seemingly uncaring of the roaring winds, it slowly approaches you

“And here we are. Finally, it’s my turn to speak with you, Wanderer,” A dry voice of sandpaper rasps from underneath the hood. It is an ancient intonation, one full of seething contempt. “I thought my time would never come, where I would speak to the one who trespasses in this forgotten place. But it seems that causality has seen fit to tip the odds into my hand.”

You can’t help but give off one of your trademark rejoinders. Some things just never change. “Thank you for not molesting me,” You retort as you give off one final hacking cough to clear the smell of decay from out of your sinuses. “I wasn’t sure how I was going to respond to a second attempt at my manhood.”

The voice audibly sneers. “It’s a sign of weakness to rely on purely animalistic desires to get what you want. I have no need to stoop to such measures, or debase myself by rutting among the humans. And even had I the inclination, I have little to no doubt that you would prefer the younger, more supple bodies of the previous two.”

Just like you thought. As the previous one had been different from the first one you met in the Task Force hospital room, this one’s likewise a different entity. That in of itself sets your teeth on edge. Three very powerful demonic women with an unhealthy interest in you.

Time for some questions of your own. “You seem to have me at a disadvantage. I’m afraid that I have no idea who or what are you.”

It’s laughter is anything but pleasant. “He asks as if he expects to receive an answer. Very well, Wanderer. I shall answer your question, if only to provide you with some modicum of understanding that the other two could not.

“I go by many names, almost all of which have been lost to the passage of time. Doubtless trying to repeat them would only amount to failure. However, you may have the privilege of knowing me as The Crone. It is one of many aliases that still cling to my fragile existence.

“As for what I am…let us just say that I am a mere fragment of what I once used to be. A shadow of a former, greater existence.”

The Crone. Well, it certainly fit her name and demeanor. The condescending tone, the seemingly bitter tone of voice…was this your grandmother or a demon you were talking to? Well, that’s one out of three demons identified, at any rate. You take what you can get.

Still, something isn’t quite right yet. “You said that it was your turn to speak with me? Is there some kind of queue of demons that are lined up to speak to me?”

“If there was, then I am most certainly the most recent one to make such an attempt. But that does not mean I am the last one to come approach you. Perhaps we may see each other again down these myriad futures? Only time and fates will tell.

“But enough of this empty banter. To answer your question, I am indeed the last of the three inhabitants of this place to parley with you. The Maiden and Mother have had their respective turns, and no amount of pleading or screeching on their part was going to stop me from attending this meeting.”

Maiden and Mother. Two more names to come up with a total sum of three.

Maiden, Mother and Crone.

Hmm…that seems oddly familiar for some reason…something about the words brings a thought to the upper levels of your conscious. Maybe you’d heard it from a friend or read it in a book somewhere?

Still, that’s not what’s important right now. You’ve got a talk to finish with this Crone. Shoving aside your errant thoughts, you pose another question:

>“Why have you all come to me?”

“Why have you all come to me?” It’s the question that’s burning a hole in your pocket the most right now. “I mean, I get that you’re kind of short on visitors at the moment, what with all the…” You wave a hand at the empty space all around you. It was far from a traditional wasteland in that the soil looked perfectly fertile, but other than that…it may as well have been.

Nothing grew here. It was a place devoid of life.

“The simplest explanation,” The Crone replies, her voice remaining low, “Is that we sought the first visitor to this realm in hundreds of thousands of years. The stream of time is stagnant here. What is only a human life in your realm is an age, an eon. Perhaps we are seeking company other than of ourselves. An eternity is a long time to spend with only two others that you cannot ever hope to get along with.

“But in truth, we have sought you out because you are the only one who retains your memories of this place. You are not the only wanderer here. Many souls pass though here, whether by happenstance or fate, but you are the only one that matters. You do not forget.

“What we seek from you, Devil Summoner, is an exit from this hell. A lifeline, a path to the light at the end of the tunnel. You are our sole conduit to returning to the world of existence, and the only one who could ever hope to be our champion.”

…well that doesn’t sound suspicious at all.

You recall your mythology. The titans trapped in Tartarus for all of eternity. The Jotunn, banished to Jotunheim and forbidden to return to Asgard. The gods had very good reasons to keep most of them locked away from the mortal realm for all of eternity.

What if the same situation applied for these unknown entities? Even if they were benign (which the Mother obviously wasn't), you still have your hesitations.

(cont.)
>>
Now that’s an unnerving thought. Problem is, you don’t know what kind of demons they are. And that’s what makes them all the more dangerous.

“But allow me to clarify. You cannot be our collective champion. You can only stand for one of us,” The Crone sneers in further explanation. “We are not known for…sharing our precious toys, treasures or mortals. You’d be playing a dangerous game to be unclaimed between the three of us, Wanderer."

>“Why are you here in the first place?”

“Why are you here in the first place to begin with?” You retort. “There are reasons why some things are locked up, no?”

That was the wrong thing to say.

The environment mirrors the Crone’s wrath. Without any warning, the smell of death intensifies to an unholy degree, and the billowing winds envelop you in an inescapable. This time, you’re unable to hold back your gag reflex, dry heaving into the soil as your body convulses and tremors.

“Perhaps intelligence was not a trait you chose time to invest in,” She mutters conversationally as if nothing had happened. “But still, you are only mortal. It is only understanding that you would lack comprehension.

“I know what runs through your mind, Devil Summoner. You think of us as monsters, demons to be destroyed or sealed away. We are neither. We have become this way due to unbelief, an absence of faith. The Great Will’s followers number the stars in the sky, and even the heathen gods of old have some followers that still have faith.

“Our existence teeters on the brink of non-existence, the peril of true oblivion. It is only by a handful of faithful around the world that we can even stay here, but not even they can last forever in the continuous march of human progress.”

She kneels beside you, and cups your face in her hands. You can feel them, dry, and full of wrinkles, with spurs along the knuckles. The only thing that separated them from normal human hands were the sharp nails digging into your cheeks.

“Child of Adam, there are two ways of serving. You can either choose to serve willingly, and even gain some recompense for your efforts, or you’ll beg to serve after an eternity of unimaginable pain. We are not so scrupulous enough to break or shatter souls in the process if it means our continued existence. Make levity at our peril or insinuate that we deserve this one more time, and you’ll pay the price for your insolence.”

Her hands then leave your face, but as they do, you can feel her nails rake your cheek ever-so-slightly. Drops of blood fall onto the soil, soaked up by the thirsty earth. “A little reminder of our time together,” She whispers into your ear. “It would be a travesty on my part if I failed to leave my Mark on your soul now that our time is up.

“Do not think ill of me, Wanderer. Out of all of us, I am perhaps the one that is more…sensitive about our situation. I try not to let my temper get the best of me, but I’ve spent too many years trapped here to let this opportunity slip by.”

And you can go fuck yourself, you think as you shakily pull yourself up on your feet. You glare daggers at the figure in the fog even as you feel the familiar sensation of being pulled out of wherever the fuck this was.

“They did not expect me to reveal our hand this soon,” Her voice carries itself along the rushing wind and the trembling of the earth. “Now that you have the barest of understandings, we will be desperate court you for your services. Perhaps in time, our behavior will improve. First impressions are meant to last forever, but perhaps your perspective on us will change given time and what we have to offer.

“It may come tomorrow, or it may come down the month. But no matter how many years come to pass here, you cannot escape the Maiden, Mother and Crone. You will return here once again, whether or not you so desire it.

“And try not to be upset about your own shortcomings. It’s only natural for mortals to question their superiors for eternity.”

With that, the figure of the Crone fades back into the fog. That is all you are aware of before the fog rushes at you and the earth crumbles underneath your feet…

…and you wake up with a gasp in the back seat of the car in a wild panic and tangle of limbs.

“Jesus Christ, Sawbones!” Fitz curses, doing her best to counter your thrashing with her hands. “Quit…yer…movin’!”

Once you realize that you’re safe back in the car, you lower your hands and do your best to get your breathing under control. Sitting next to you, Fitz gives you a worried look disguised as one of annoyance, with MacKay checking over the shoulder of the driver’s seat. You look over her shoulder to see Madison sprawled completely fast asleep on the opposite side of the car. But the biggest surprise is Murdock riding in the shotgun seat, with a distant look in his eyes.

You wipe a bit of drool from the corner of your mouth. “How long’ve I been asleep?”

“’bout thirty minutes give or take a few seconds. Didn’t want to wake you up, but it looked like you were goin’ through some serious shit. Couldn’t help but wake you up.”

Rubbing the corners of your eyes with the cleanest part of your sleeve, you sit up into a more comfortable position. “Thanks.”

“No problem. Least I could do since you did lead us to victory. Speakin’ of which, we’re gonna rendezvous with Alger in ten minutes back at the beach house to debrief. And you’re still sure about puttin’ the big guy up front in a favorable light?”

She points to Murdock, and then to the unconscious Madison.

Right. You still had to take care of that.

Quickly pushing aside all thoughts about Maidens, MILFs and bitchy old cunts, you clear your throat and say, “Yeah. It’s the best I can do for a compromise since, y’know, she did technically lead his daughter to her death. I’m not about to throw him into the deep end of the pool without a lifeline. Besides, we do owe him for helping us fish those two yahoos out of the water earlier.”

Fitz scoffs lightly. “You’re too damn nice for your own good, Sawbones. Don’t tell me you’re forgetting the fact that he had a point three five seven pointed at her skull.”

“Which he ultimately lowered,” You counter. “He was willing to listen to reason and stand down when we told him we had his daughter.”

“Fair enough. Though if it was up to me, I’d throw the handbook at him.”

You smile. “I have little doubt about that.”

The rest of the drive back to the beach house is done in relative silence, with MacKay’s statement of “we’re here” breaking the monotony. You get up out of your seat, and Fitz moves to get Madison roused and awake. Murdock doesn’t offer any resistance as MacKay grabs him tightly by the shoulder and propels him along with you.

Standing in the driveway, Alger taps his foot impatiently as the five of you move up. His eyebrows are back to their familiar frown, and he spits out what looks like a toothpick into the grass. “Report.”

>You told Alger the truth.
>You made it clear that you’re biased in Murdock’s favor.
>You tell Alger how Murdock helped you and stood down.

Alger doesn’t offer any other expression aside from a raised eyebrow and a shake of the head. When you finish, he turns to Murdock. “I never expected you to pull a gun on a mortal, Murdock,” He says quietly. “The only reason that I haven’t killed you myself is because the girl’s still alive and you helped my agents.”

For the first time since you woke up, the Scottsman replies in a dull tone. “I know what I did, Commander Alger. And I’ll accept whatever punishment that the Task Force decides to throw my way.”

Alger’s expression doesn’t change, but it looks like there’s a faint glint of respect in his eyes. “Take him away. Put him in the cellar for the moment. We’ll take him back with us to D.C. in the morning.”

“Yes, sir,” MacKay replies. With a nod in your direction, he strong-arms the sullen Murdock into the house. As soon as the two of them vanish, your commander turns his eyes towards Madison, who shrinks up behind you and Fitz as best as she can.

It doesn’t help. “You’re the reason why all of this is happening, Missy,” Alger says. “Even if we ignore Brenda, that’s still seven deaths and four maiming and injury charges that you’ve got stacked against you. Unfortunately, since we can’t get the last few proven in a court of law, I’ve only got so many options to consider.”

You catch his attention with a gesture of your hand. He frowns. “You got a suggestion, Brown? I'm all ears at this point. And since you did lead the operation, I'm more than willing to defer to your judgement this time."

The best the D.A. can do is slap an involuntary manslaughter charge. Unlawful-Act, to be specific. It's a class B felony that can get her for up to 25 years of imprisonment. Maybe the judge will be lenient since she did fess up and it's her first offense, but she still has to serve time.

You slowly and deliberately say, “Have her ‘fess up to the authorities. Let her take responsibility for her actions. I’m not up to date on my law, but I’m fairly sure they can stick a manslaughter charge on her. Leading someone out for a hazing ritual should at least count for that much.”

Madison’s eyes widen, and you can feel her squirming in your grip. “I…I…” She stammers, her voice quivering with fear.

Fitz scowls at her. “Last time I heard, you said that you were sorry for her death. Don’t tell me that your little declaration was just bullshit to get out of Murdock’s revolver…”

“I am, and I mean it!” She cries. “I swear to God that I’m sorry, okay?! I just…my life is already fucked by this…and…please…I don’t want to go to prison…”

Alger’s stony look doesn’t abate in the slightest. “She looks quite reluctant, but if that’s what you think is best, then I’m more than willing to help…facilitate her confession. A simple escort to the police station should be enough to suffice. And if that fails…well, I can always rely on my ‘friends’ in the Task Force to take this off of our hands.”

The girl in question sinks to her knees, and starts shaking uncontrollably. “What…what kind of people are you?” She whispers, broken and completely dejected. “How can you do this to me…?”

“The kind of people that usually get what we want,” Your commander retorts. “And right now, it looks like my squad leader thinks prison is the best punishment for your actions. Be thankful that it’s only one count of manslaughter instead of seven. We could just as easily get you in for that with a few strings pulled."

He turns to look at you one more time. “Last chance, Brown. Is this really what's for the best?”

You’re not sure what causes you to reverse your judgement. Maybe it’s the fact that your sister shares her name with the one responsible for this mess, and you could easily see Maddie in her shoes, begging not to go to prison. Or it could be the fact that she’s already broken without the extra reinforcement of a prison sentence.

…fuck. You’re not even sure what you should be doing. But now that you’ve had the chance to think on it, you know that it isn’t for the best to ultimately throw her in the slammer. You can’t do it.

“…no, it isn’t,” You slowly say. “…fucking hell, I don’t know what I can do as a proper response, but just…look at her. She’s already broken as it is. It’s just overkill at this point to throw her to the court system. It's just needlessly cruel on our part to subjugate her to that. I'm a Devil Summoner, not an executioner."

>Fitz approves +2
>Alger approves +4

Fitz sighs, but it isn’t filled with her usual annoyance. “Like I said. Too nice. But if that’s what you think is the right call, then I ain’t gonna stop you.”

You think that you see the shadow of a smile appear on Alger’s face, but the dim lighting makes it too difficult for you to see anything. “Then what do you suppose we do then? I'll give you some time to think...”

You take his advice. You rack your brain, long and hard, even going back from what you remember inside the handbook for available options.

Then it hits you. Maybe...you could consider that along with the other available options.

A smile breaks across your face for what feels like the first time since forever. “We could recruit her.” You say. That get’s everyone’s heads up and turned towards you. Fitz’s nostrils flare sharply as Alger’s eyebrow twitches. Madison turns towards you with a very, very confused look on her face. “She could join the Task Force.”

“Sawbones, what the fuck-”

“Just hear me out for a second. It’s a win-win scenario: she gets the chance to atone for the deaths that she caused, and we don’t have to worry about her blabbing her mouth to whoever comes to visit. Not that she would since she’s smart enough to know about the consequences of talking, but that’s beside the point.”

“Which is?” Alger raises a sharp eyebrow. “You’re not a rookie anymore, but this is only your first case, Brown. Walk on the thin ice with exceptional care.”

“We all got our second chances with the Task Force when we were down on our luck,” You quietly say. “I didn’t have a job prospect lined up before this dropped right into my lap. And it’s none of my business, but I’m more than certain that we all got our collective asses saved by the Task Force in some way or another. The least we could do is share some of our sympathy and give it to someone who deserves it.”

Fitz gestures towards her. “And you believe she does?”

“Do you?” You return to her. “You should know since you were a police officer prior to this. People skills and whatnot.”

That gets her mouth to close. Myriad expressions war on her face before she throws up her hands in surrender. “…don’t make provin’ me otherwise a habit, okay?” She mutters. “Because the moment you become insufferable, I just might shoot you again.”

“Thanks for the forewarning,” You dryly reply, before turning your attention towards Alger, who regards you with a cool look, before turning to Madison who does her best to pull herself back together.

He sighs. “Remember what I said about not making too much of a fuss for the brass?”

“You only said that applied to Commander Sparda, sir.”

“Don’t get smart with me, Brown. Your big mouth and actions are writing paychecks that are gonna put a strain on our budget…but for once, I’m going to let it slide. As long as she’s willing to join.”

For a brief moment, you thought he was going to refuse. And then you turn to Madison, who nods as sharply as she can. “Y-yeah! I’ll…I’ll do it,” She stammers, before the slightest modicum of resolution enters her voice, “I’ll join your…group or whatever it is. I promise I won’t fuck this up, I promise! I mean it, I swear.”

He regards he with sardonic amusement before returning his attention to you. “You know something?”

“Yes, sir?”

He affixes you with a critical gaze. “You’re right about second chances. Just make sure to know who to give them to. Because not everyone deserves them, even if they are genuinely sorry. I’ve got some phone calls to make.”

With that, he turns about face and heads back into the house.

Fitz follows soon after, gesturing to Madison with a pointed nod of the head. Your problem, not mine, it said. That’s right. It’s too late to drive back to the sorority house now. And that’s not even talking about the damage Brenda had done in her demon form.

Whoops.

Rolling your eyes, you help Madison off of the ground. She doesn’t make a sound as you guide her inside and set her down on the living room couch, grabbing a pair of blankets and a pillow from the closet to set up a makeshift bed. As soon as you set up what looks like a comfortable sleeping spot, you turn to leave.

That is, until you feel a slight grip on the sleeve of your shirt.
“Stay here…please?”Madison asks with pleading eyes. “Just for the night…”

…fuck. You can’t say no to that kind of look. A thousand curses upon your parents for not being able to say no to someone in need.

With a sigh, you pull up the recliner and position yourself adjacent to her. “Get some sleep,” You drawl as you open up your COMP. May as well get some research done. “It’s gonna be a long day tomorrow.”

Silence reigns as the covers shift and rustle against the fabric of the sofa. And then, it’s broken by the quietest whisper. “...thank you...thank you so much...”

Even as you scroll down the available articles you find on the Maiden, Mother and Crone, you can’t help but smile.

[10:45 AM Thursday, June 25th 2015]

There is good news and bad news.

The bad news is that the stiff neck that you wake up with is the least of your worries. Your body feels like it got put through the wringer. You lift your shirt up to see multiple bruises, and just twisting in your chair causes no end of cramps and aches to course through your body.

Joy.

The good news? You didn’t have any ‘night time’ visitors come calling for you. Oddly enough, the only dream you had was someone chasing you with a knife, and the both of you were laughing like idiots the entire time.

...it says something about you to be able to take that as good news.

You take a look over on the sofa. Madison is still out cold, and her cell phone keep on going off. To your surprise, it’s Alyssa’s number that flashes on the screen. She must’ve left it back at the house for her friend.

>Answer the phone?

Oh dear God no. You’ve seen enough sitcoms and soap operas (blame Mother) to know that was a bad idea. How would Alyssa take it if you were to answer her friend’s phone and tell her that she spent the night with you?

Yeah, that’s unexploded ordinance you have no intention of getting close to. You silently pray that Madison explains her disappearance with the same amount of tact.

But you digress. Before you eventually fell asleep to a combination of fatigue and aching eyes, you did as much research as you could on the Maiden, Mother and Crone. And the results were fruitful, to say the least. You didn’t even have to use the Task Force archives to pull in the results.

An aspect deity, three entities combined as one singular goddess.

The concept of a triad of goddesses is not new to classic mythology. The Greeks had Artemis, Selene and Hecate as their Moon goddess(es), and the Hindu faith had Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati as their Tridevi. The Nordic Norns, Urd, Verdandi and Skuld, and so on and so forth.

What separated the Maiden and company from the others was the fact that they’re the alleged chief deity of neopaganism, which isn’t exactly the most…classic of religions. Sure it’s derived from classic paganism and Wicca, but other than that, it’s only a relatively new movement. Only three hundred years old, if he was feeling generous.

The movement went back to the eighteenth century. The goddess herself wasn’t adopted as a symbol until some guy named Robert Graves came along with the idea after deriving the concept from the traditional triad of goddesses. That’s when his labels for them stuck: Maiden, Mother and Crone; the archetypal matriarch goddess represented in all her glory by either the changing seasons, the age of the woman, or the phases of the moon. Take your pick.

>Maiden: enchantment, inception, birth, youth and youthful enthusiasm as represented by the waxing moon.
>Mother: ripeness, fertility, sexuality, fulfillment, power and life as represented by the full moon.
>Crone: wisdom, repose, death and endings, represented by the waning moon.

It made enough sense, but it only goes deeper the further you research. Gah, information overload!

Your head throbs as you pour yourself a glass of orange juice and chase it down in a single gulp. Things have certainly gotten more complicated than before. What’s the goddess of a relatively ‘new’ religion want with you? It doesn’t have enough ‘faithful’?

Then again…considering that _most_ neopagans you’ve seen in your lifetime were either edgy teenagers breaking away from ‘muh establishment’ or tree-huggers screaming about the evils of protein…

You can kind of see their predicament.

“I knew you were joking about being a lady-killer.”

Standing at the top of the stairwell, Brady waggles his eyebrows suggestively at you as he makes his way down. There’s a notable limp to his steps, and his arms are heavily bandaged.

You wince as he does when he puts pressure on his foot. Either Alger’s spell wasn’t enough, or Brenda just really had their way with the two of them last night. The fact that Murdock was still able to stand let alone break into the sorority house spoke volumes of his resistance.

“You feeling okay?” You ask as he pulls up a nearby stool.

“I’ve had worse,” He replies, tearing into a bagel. “This thing is tolerable. Oh wait, you’re talking about my injuries? Yeah, it hurts like the dickens, mate. Bugger got us real good. Thank fuck for healing spells.”

His smile turns into a smirk. “But who’s the girl, bossman? Last time I was lucid, we didn’t have a guest sleeping on the couch. And certainly not a qt like her.”

“Someone who got a second chance. She’s our latest recruit for the Task Force.”

Brady’s bagel falls out of his mouth. “You’re putting me on, mate. You’ve got to be. There’s no way Alger-”

“He made the phone calls last night and gave me the approval from central. We’ve got ourselves another recruit as soon as she finishes taking care of stuff on her end. Shouldn’t take more than a few weeks at the most.”

>You explain the situation to Brady.

“Damn,” He mutters, eventually picking up his bagel. “I mean, don’t get me wrong. I would’ve done the same thing in your shoes, but I can’t believe that one girl was the cause of all our trouble. Glad to see that you aren’t a hardass bastard.”

>Brady approves +6!

You shrug. “She’s genuinely remorseful for what she’s done. That’s more than enough for me to give her a second chance.”

“Damn, you’re so…” Brady fumbles around for a word, “You’re so bloody gallant. I don’t even know if lady-killer is the right thing to call you anymore.”

That gets a chuckle out of you. “Yeah, well believe me when I say that our first impressions of each other were less than flattering.”

“I’ll believe it when I see it,” he mutters. “But I for one am not about to wake her up…oh, right. Alger told MacKay to tell me to tell you that we’re gonna close up shop in a few hours. It’s time for us to head back to D.C. and get properly situated on base. If you’ve got any errands to take care of, now’s the time to do them.”

One shower later finds you filled with determination and a second wind. You slide on a pair of fresh clothing, free of sea salt and the otherwise gross smell of physical exertion.
Victoria is still out of it. You can hear her breath from all the way down the hallway. Alger did say that she caught the worse of Brenda’s attack when she tore down Murdock’s boathouse. Nothing too dangerous, but it was best to keep her in bed until we had to head out.

You give her sleeping form a polite wave before setting off down the stairs and out the door. On the drive way is a brand new car, another Black Cadillac to replace the one that got trashed last night. You whistle lowly as you get into the driver’s seat. They work really fast. You have to give them credit.

But at any rate, you decide to go to the sorority house first. It’s on the way to the outlet stores where all the cool things are. Given how bad it got scuffed up last night…

You quietly pray that the girls are still there. Alyssa deserves to have some kind of resolution. It’s over for you, but as far as she knows? It hasn’t stopped yet.

You’re in luck. You catch sight of the girls busy cleaning up the front of the house. A few familiar faces turn in your direction as you pull up on the side of the street, but it’s the mop of red hair that you’re looking for. Squatting by the wooden steps, power drill in hand, she’s hard at work trying to pry the splintered boards off of the area. A new set of boards sit a few feet adjacent from her.

You smile as you roll down your window.

“That’s still not how you hold the drill, Alyssa.”

That gets her attention. The drill immediately cycles down as she stands up with a surprised look on her face. Even from this distance, you can still make out the sight of her mouth curving upwards from an irritated look into a surprised smile.

“Andrew! Hey!” Within a few seconds, she’s set the drill down and comes sprinting towards your car. “I wasn’t expecting to see you for…oh, I don’t know. I thought that you’d gone to the hospital after what happened yesterday.”

You shrug. “Got myself a clean bill of health. Didn’t even have to stay overnight.” A half-truth. You never sustained any injuries in your first fight with Brenda, and you didn’t have to go to the hospital. “I got worried about you guys, and I decided to swing by. Wasn’t expecting a construction site, though. What happened?”

Alyssa sighs. “Some idiots decided to set off fireworks. The result? Two days of home repair or our collective asses are on the chopping block by the frat association. All of that thanks to some pyromaniac asshole that the police still haven’t caught yet.”

And they never will. It takes you a moment to bypass the feeling of butterflies in your stomach when she indirectly called you a ‘pyromaniac asshole’. It stings only ever-so-slightly. That’s a falsehood if you ever heard one. You’ve got more of a penchant for lightning spells, if High Pixie is anyone to go by.

Still, you do feel a little bit guilty about hunkering down at the house, even though the damage was the demon’s fault. You’ve got the time to spare, too. May as well alleviate your guilty conscience just a bit.

>>
“Need a hand with that?” You point towards the house. “That floorboard’s gonna come together a lot faster if two heads are going at it.”

“I couldn’t!” She says, waving her hands. “I mean…you already did so much for us…like helping with the booth…and…you know…saving the girls…”

You dial down the intensity of your grin to a gentler, softer smile. “I insist. It’s the least I can do before I take the drive back home to Maryland.”

“Oh…” Her face visibly falls, her enthusiasm waning slightly. “You mean…you’re leaving today?”

“Yeah, sorry about that. Not my choice, though. I got an emergency at the workplace and my boss is cutting my vacation time short. Wants me back in to go fix the problem.”

“Your boss sounds like a real jackass if you ask me,” She declares with an annoyed sniff. “And you’re the only one qualified to do that? Talk about being inept.”

If only she knew. And Alger’s mellowed out since your initial meeting. He isn’t a jackass anymore as much as he’s a hardass. You still infinitely prefer that to the standoffish man that greeted you in the hospital.

“Still, we’re burning daylight,” You say as you open the car door. “And I’m not leaving until that floorboard is finished. I’ll consider it mission completed if I leave with a fixed floorboard and the proper way of holding the drill instilled into your hands.”

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean...?!”

>You spent an hour working on the floorboard with Alyssa.
>You ignored all the salacious grins that her friends were giving her.
>You spent some time making small talk about various things.

“...you know how you told me that it’s important to stay hydrated?” Alyssa eventually says. You look up from the last floorboard to see her looking at you with an unreadable expression on her face. “Why don’t you come on inside and have a drink? I’d make for a poor host if I let you pass out under the sun."

“I’d appreciate that, thanks.”

The house had seen some better days, but it looks much better than it did last night. Maybe it was the shoddy illumination or the fact that Murdock had a gun to Madison’s skull, but the place actually looks inhabitable. Even the broken glass had long been since swept away.

“The girls are going to be fine,” Alyssa quietly says as she puts ice in a pair of glasses. The sound of the cubes cracking under the water stream is audible even in the relative silence of the house. “I mean, Sylvia’s gonna have to through lots of therapy. She was a basketball player, you know? The loss of an arm…really messed her up.”

You grimace as she hands you a glass. “I can’t imagine what she’s going through. What a terrible loss on her end.”

“Right…but everyone else has been really supportive. We’re confident that she’ll get back up on her feet.”

“As long as she has friends to support her, then she’s going to be okay.” You take a sip of the water. It’s slightly saltier than Maryland tap, but it’s still drinkable. The ice takes the edge off the taste. "I've worked with patients injured just as bad, and they've made full recoveries. It's just a storm that comes and goes."

“But I sometimes don’t know,” She admits. “All these bad things that’ve been happening…my brother’s relapse, the…the funeral…and all of these attacks...it feels like there’s no escape, sometimes, you know? The walls are closing in. And God, it just feels so…weird to be telling you all this when I have the others, but I can’t show them any signs of weakness since I’m the leader and-”

You cut her off with a pointed gesture. “Look. Sometimes, bad things just happen. Other times, one thing leads to another. We all go through our ups and downs, and right now…all you have to wait is for all the good things to come. It’s only gonna get better.

“At least, that’s what the fortune cookie said this morning.”

That gets a laugh out of her. “You eat Chinese food for breakfast? That’s nasty.”

“Don’t knock it till you try it,” You retort. “And no, I didn’t have any today. The cookie was my friend’s leftovers. Had some take out last night and didn’t share any with me, the big jerk.”

That sets her off. She laughs, and it’s devoid of all the stress, anxiety and worry that had been present in her voice prior. It’s the sound of a young woman whose concerns has been set to the side, and is just embracing the hilarity that life had to offer. Throaty, feminine and melodious all at the same time.

As soon as she calms down, swiping tears of amusement from her eyes, you smile and continue talking, “Still talking about storms, when it rains it does pour, you know? That just means that after the long squall, everything’s gonna be all sunshine for a while. It washes away all the pollen, the grime and unhealthy things that cling to you.”

Alyssa smiles at you. “You’re like a walking motivational poster, you know that?”

You roll your eyes good-naturedly. “I blame bedside care training, but I don’t regret a thing. And let me tell you something: there won’t be any more attacks. Trust me. That shark, whatever it is? Call it a hunch, but it isn’t coming back. It’s long gone.”

She makes a noise that’s the odd fusion of laugh and a scoff. “…you know what the funniest thing is? I actually believe what you say. When it comes from you…there’s just something that makes me believe you.

“And you know what?” She asks, boldly stepping closer to you. She’s so close, nearly pressing herself against your chest. “About that whole thing about good things happening after all the bad? I guess you’re right…in a sense. I mean…if it weren’t for all of these things…the fundraiser, the attacks, and even that stupid drill…”

Standing on the tips of her toes, she looks up to you with eyes full of affection and desire. “I would never have met you, Andrew,” she whispers as she leans up towards you, eyes slowly closing and lips trembling with anticipation.

You already know what you have to do, even as she’s only mere inches away from your lips.

Alyssa yelps in surprise as you pull her into a gentle embrace. One hand gently cups the back of her head as the other gently takes hold of her shoulder. You close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to calm the both of you down. Her hair still has the faint scent of strawberry shampoo, and the light smell of fabric softener still clings to her shirt.

“You don’t want someone like me,” You whisper, gently rubbing her back. “Even if I could bridge the distance…it’s just wouldn’t work. My job…requires me to travel a lot. And the thing is…you are a very beautiful young woman with a bright future ahead of you. I can’t guarantee things would stay the same.”

She squirms against your hold, pulling back enough away to come face-to-face with you. Her face is only centimeters away from yours, and you can feel her breath raise gooseflesh along your neck. “But isn’t that how these things work?” She quietly retorts. “You give some, and I give some. Sacrifices, you know? For the betterment of both parties.”

You hesitate for a moment before steeling your voice. “It would be too cruel to give you any sort of false hope. I mean…you already know that I’m leaving in a few hours. Just…why would you do this to yourself?”

“For a guy who went to medical school, you aren’t very smart,” She smiles, her face flushed a deep red. “I know that asking for something long-lasting was a stretch goal in the first place, and I’m used to not making those. Comes with being someone who does a lot of fundraisers. But what I am good at...is breaking even...”

(cont.)
>>
>>46086797

Her eyes close for the briefest of moments as she leans into your chest with a content sigh, before sneaking an embarrassed glance to the stairs leading up. “Spend the rest of your time here with me, Andrew. And don’t think I’m trying to pay you back with...with this for everything you’ve done for all of us...I...can't explain why, but I've fallen so hard for you and oh God, I can't believe I just said that..."

You can't believe it either. If it weren't for your self-control, your eyes would be the size of dinner plates. Even as it is, you're having a difficult time trying to keep your body from making a discomfiting reaction to her presence.

"In your arms, I just feel…at peace, like everything’s going to be alright. In your analogies and comparisons…it’s like you’re the lighthouse that keeps me from running aground. A shining beacon of Light that draws me out of the bad things in the storm.

“So please…” She whispers, pulling herself tighter against your body. “If you’re never going to come back here again…then at least give me something to remember you by…”

“…okay,” You eventually relent, brushing a few errant strands of hair out of her face. “…if this is what you really want…and you know that this is only a one-time thing…”

“…well, you could always come back here to make a second time,” Alyssa suggests with a smile on her face. “…you do still have my number, after all. And it’s not like I’m going to be going anywhere…”

You shake your head, resolving to delete her number from the COMP as soon as you get back to Alger. “Once, and only once. Otherwise…”

“…I understand...” She quietly finishes. “That’s okay. It’s just another failed stretch goal…”

You can’t hold it in anymore. “Alyssa, I-”
This time, she cuts you off with by suddenly leaning in and pressing her lips against yours. For the briefest of moments, you’re taken aback as she sighs, relaxing against your body as her mouth clashes against yours. Her lips taste of strawberries, and spearmint, with yielding flesh soft and warm to the touch.

You eventually push her off with a disapproving frown. “Whoa there. Ease up there on the gas. Didn’t you want to take this upstairs?”

Alyssa rubs the back of her head sheepishly as she flushes an even deeper shade of crimson. “…ahaha…sorry about that. Guess I just got…carried away…”

With a sigh, you gently take her hand and lead her up the stairs. “Just try not to get too carried away. I have work tomorrow, and the last thing I need are marks in visible places…”

Her smile turns mischievous, in spite of her embarrassment. “I’ll try…”

The drive back to Alger’s house is a silent affair. You don’t even turn on the radio as you normally would and let the tune belt out of the stereo like nobody’s business. The only sort of noise that you register is the sound of traffic and the solid tapping of your fingers against the steering wheel.

“…oh, God, Andrew…I…”

Alyssa was coherent enough to give you permission to use her shower. And thank God she did, because her scent clung to you like oil on water. There was no way in hell you’d be able pass off smelling like the candle department of Bed, Bath and Beyond along with the rich, earthly smell of fresh passion.

“…I never knew…it would be…”

And the goddamn glitter. That shit gets everywhere. Considering the fact that Madison had lived with Alyssa in the sorority for at least two years...yeah, the fallout wasn’t going to be pretty. Tender mercies where you can take them.

“I…I love you! I love you so much!”

You sigh deeply as you pull up into the driveway, pressing your hands into your face. You still can’t believe what just happened. Like…goddammit. This wasn’t Men in Black anymore. When did Superna…

You can’t even bring yourself to make a joke. God, you feel terrible. Instead of the euphoric buzz that you’d normally get after post-release…no, wait, you’re definitely feeling that. It just so happens that the feelings of regret are strong enough to override the physical pleasures of the flesh.

Don’t get yourself wrong. It was willing, consensual, and certainly made her more than satisfied. That much you’re sure of, given the faint ringing in your ears. So what was the problem?

Was it a reminder of something you couldn’t have as a Devil Summoner for the Task Force? Or is she your biggest ‘what if’, one that you’re going to spend the rest of your life fixated on? It could’ve been both, or it could’ve been neither. Maybe it was one and not the other.

But whatever the reason, your steps feel heavier than normal as you saunter up to the front door, and knock with a dull monotone.

MacKay opens the door and greets you with a pleasant smile. “Hey! Where’ve you been?”

You smile ruefully. “Just tying up some loose ends, is all. Are we all set and ready to go?”

“Yeah. Just waiting on you to come back with the car. Brady said something about you having to go run some errands when I came back with lunch. Do you want some Chinese food?”

“Oh God yes. Thanks a bunch, MacKay.”

“Least I can do and I hope you like it extra spicy.”

“You read my mind. Lead on to the glorious General Tso.”

“Here’s your plate…”

“Thanks…good Lord, you weren’t kidding. This stuff’s as hot as hell!”

"Glad we share a common taste, though I have no desire to sample food from the pit."

"Amen to that."

“…so did you take care of everything you meant to do? We won’t be coming back for a long time.”

“…well, I guess you could say that.”

To this day, you’re still not sure whether or not you were trying to reassure him or yourself.

“You have recruited yet another one into the fold.”

“She’s got moxie and a shooting arm to back it up. More than enough for me to take her on.”

“And the fact that her upbringing shows superior breeding has nothing to do with it?”

“Yes, to an extent, but you seriously can’t use eugenics for humans.”

“I meant no offense. As a matter of fact, it was a compliment of the highest order. She has all the traits that would prove valuable in rearing future generations of warrior offspring.”

“…what the hell. She just lost her husband and daughter. You’d think you’d be a little more sympathetic given what you are.”

“While I am terribly sorry to hear that-”

“No you aren’t.”

“That is beside the point. The point is that she survived and now rides alongside your…how is it that you mortals call it? A posse?”

“Yes.”

“Your posse. Quite. Have you not noticed how the doctor gazes upon her with longing and desire?”

“…he’s a good lad. Terribly inexperienced, and a virgin to boot, but he won’t do anything. See that cross around his neck? A pious physician, he is. Thinks were on some mission from God.”

“He is not wrong about that in any way, shape or form. But be that as it may…”

“Get to the point.”

“You are too willing to risk one of the most competent female warriors escape from your grasp. Many eons have come and gone, and it still baffles me whenever I see mortal men so self-assured in avoiding being cuckolded.”

“…Jesus Christ…what do you want?”

“For your information, I am not the Messiah. Second, you were the one that came to me for help when no one else would. It is already dangerous enough to meet like this. Do you know how much I am risking just by coming down here?”

“I know. And I am grateful for your assistance.”

“This is not assistance as much as it is mutual agreement to prevent our destruction. You should know that you are expected to uphold your end of the bargain.”

“I know that. Now if there’s anything else you want to say, then say it. I’ve got to head back to the camp before the others get suspicious.”

“...your namesake, how well do you know him?”

“Which one? There’s been about a million of my name that’ve come and gone for the last few hundred years.”

“The Apostle, one who followed the Messiah.”

“…the one that wrote the last book in the Bible.”

“Both of you have Revelations of what is to come. His fell upon deaf ears, and you are the proof that they were right. Remember that just as he failed to warn the world, so you too carry that risk. Do not forget why you are here and what you wish to prevent form happening.”

“…and this has something to do with me having offspring with her…”

“Offspring that can fight in the wars to come. Your seed shall take root and come to form a mighty legacy of warriors in the service of the True-“
