The fighting in the Great Interior Desert subsides and the world breathes a collective sigh of relief as the warring nations begin peace talks.

Meanwhile the Caramel Camel Corps prepare to take part in a black operation. The contract made even more dubious by the fact that it came from the IF Security Council itself. Slowly the mercenaries realize that a desperate shadow war continues to be waged beneath the veneer of peace.

((Welcome to the Mecha Mercs Skirmish Campaign.

This is a tactical turn based collective game where each player takes on the role of a mech pilot. As the campaign progresses the players will accumulate a supply of resources which can be used to build up a persistent pool of mechs and equipment, but watch out! If your pilot dies you could lose it all and be forced to start again with an inferior mech.

Right now we have room for one more new player (First come first serve).

All existing players who wish to participate in the mission please answer the roll call and post your builds. If you don't catch the start of the game don't worry, it moves a lot more slowly now and you can deploy mid-mission.

New Players please choose a quick start build from the picture shown and post.

Cable Guy: “Our friend from the IF will handle the briefing, with all the classified need to know information surrounding the mission it’s best that you hear everything straight from him.”

IF Handler: “What I’m about to tell you is highly classified. Your target is an experimental mech called the Cognis. We believe the Zanvrans are using it to undermine our interests throughout the world but we don’t have enough evidence to prove this conclusively. The delicate political situation in the desert combined with the troop build-up in Landum means the Peace Keepers are not in a position to eliminate the target. Zanvra has always been on the lookout for an excuse to incriminate the IF. There are many nations who feel that the Security Council has grown heavy handed. Acting without sufficient evidence or Assembly approval would give our enemies a lot of ammunition, so we have to keep our hands clean. That’s where your outfit comes in.

Your mission is to completely destroy the Cognis. From scattered reports we have determined that it’s armament consists of twin-linked smart guns, some kind of ion beam weapon and a set of vertical launch missiles. It’s primary weapon appears to be a massive railgun, which seems to be capable of hitting targets in orbit.

"No doubt you’ve heard scattered stories of technical failures throughout Bi-frost network; those where a cover up. The truth is those satellites were shot down and we believe the Cognis was responsible. The IF cannot tolerate the existence of such a weapon. To make things worse the Cognis does not appear to need supplemental cloud computing, making it nigh unhackable. It is also equipped with an ECM suite and some kind of adaptive camouflage combined with heavy frontal armour plating, a super mech if there ever was one. There’s really no easy way to do this; surround the Cognis and overwhelm it.

We’ve tracked the mech to a forested region within the Protectorate where we believe it is preparing fire on spacecraft launching from the Monus Space Center. Aside from the Cognis itself expect to encounter conventional escort forces. Our intel division has ruled out additional enemy mechs as the cloud computing requirements make them unsuited for deep cover operations. Expect ground forces with cloaking capability. To make matters worse we will have a limited window of time before the Protectorate’s military become aware of our presence and move to intercept us. We cannot leave any evidence behind. If you are forced to bail out your mech will self-destruct and you must make your way to the evacuation choppers we provide before the mission ends.

If you do not make it out in time you will most certainly be captured by the Protectorate and executed. Good luck Camel Corps. We will be watching.”

Ah, pardon me Mr IF Gman. Do you have any intel on the pilot of this "Cognis," or why exactly he's targetting the satellites and spacecraft? Knowing his personality and motivations may help us anticipate his actions.
>>
>>46096668

IF Handler: "We haven't been able to put together any conclusive intel on the pilot of the Cognis. We don't even know if it has a single pilot or if different pilots are assigned to it depending on the mission. We're pretty sure that the Cognis is controlled by the Zanvrans, which makes the motivation simple: dismantle the Bi-frost network. Zanvra has always resented how the IF has kept it's power in check, destroying our satellites would deal a serious blow to our strategic capabilities. The fact that there have only been sporadic attacks mean that Zanvra is not ready to move against us directly or that the Cognis technology is not easily replicated. Our intelligence team have many theories on the matter, none of which I am cleared to discuss with you."

Thank you, Mr. IF G-man. As always, we at the 3C are glad that we are your first choice for deniable covet ops operations. I'll transfer you our discount voucher.

Pilots! We are facing highly capable units and we're here to hit hard and rush. I therefore suggest we try to stack up as much as possible in the sectors and move forward.

Understand the following!

1 - An Ion Canon and a rail gun will tear through targets in a straight line, so if you're behind something it likely won't help you!

2 - No cloud threads make for difficult, if not impossible, hackable targets.

3 - We're facing multiple cloaked enemies, but surprisingly these are less dangerous than one might think - they're harder to see, but their weapons don't do as much damage.

I recommend a dispersed half circle, closing in on the target.
I want to see all of you moving forward and getting in there.
Focus on enemy valuable targets, and leave the smaller tanks to me if possible.

You did, a resource to consider is the redline mod, a once per sortie you may have your pick of one auto 20 hit, or 2 with a +10 modifier, you must declare activation of the mod in the same post as the action(no getting a critfail and popping a redline to cheat the dicegods)

Uhhh....was kinda going for artistic license?
He's Italian complexion in a world of black majority, tall, ex foot slogger, hence a much more muscled body than common for a mech pilot, many poorly healed scars on his body, wears wifebeaters and cargo pants
A face that suggests mirth and cunning?, dunno bub, was gunna let you decide how he looked facially, draw something fun for you to draw
Closer cropped hair though
While I'm at it I'll must describe horst as a person for bumpage

I ask because if I made him, as an extreme example, with green skin, a salmon pink mohawk, with a homoerotic crotchless flight suit, broney insignia, and furry tail, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be what you would hope fore. If I got at least a broad description, I would have a direction to go that wouldn't completely disappoint.

The point is I'd do the same damage on the front arc no matter what!
At least with the mech pistols I'd have more shots for the back arc.
Instead I have to use these stronger yet less shooty heavy mech pistols.
4*3 = 12
2*6 = 12
It never mattered except now I get less shots!

The mechs have been visible the whole time, the decoy drone makes a copy of the drone owners mech, so unless cognis is bending the rules on himself we have at least 1 live summit, further investigation shows the drones(unless there are better drones in apex) can only move 8 hexes, mech 7 moved 9-10 and the other that moved only 7 hexes

Pay rating was "very high"
That would suggest a siortie payout of 40-50 creds

How cognis intends to balance paying 8-15 pilots €50 though, is beyond me

Cable Guy: "The Cognis is down!"

IF Handler: "Excellent, now make sure the wreck is annihilated. We don't want the Zanvrans somehow-"

>Cognis Explodes

Cable Guy: "Self destruct charges... I guess they didn't want anybody getting their hands on the wreck either. The remaining MGPs are fleeing and their drones have scuttled themselves."

IF Handler: "That settles it then. Transport VTOLs are moving in for extraction, everybody get out of there."

------------

Cable Guy:"Hey. I saw two pilots eject when the Cognis went down. One boarded an MGP but it looks like the other one got left behind. Tragedy is close by, should we attempt to pick him up Commander?"

MISSION COMPLETE. Standby for post mission rewards.

Good job Pilots Horst, Tragedy. I see the days of being a footslogger pays of! I was in the corps myself, way back when. Good times. I don't miss it much. It's far, far nicer to be shot at when encased within a shell of metal and malice.

>>46143376
And I agree with Chuck here - there's a couple of questions I want to ask a man willing to fire at IF satelites in an experimental mech.

And I want him or her treated nicely, y'hear? Battles done, no "accidents" or "incidents" or "whups, I just happened to discharge my sidearm in the direction the Zanvra pilot was standing, too bad about the kneecap!"

Then once we're all done and dusted and had a nice chat - a /nice/ chat - we can book a plane or some such, send him or her to where they want to go. No reason to be more cruel than we have to.

Now hush hush about this one, Pilots. Proud of ya.

Thank you for the extraction and helicopter service, Mr. A. Nonymous. As I said, the 3C appreciates working with you.

The zone is clear, the Cognis is gone, and no data is available to be extracted. It seems the enemy PILOT managed to escape in a MGP.

They're rapidly getting out of range, and the Protectorate military is closing in, so I am ordering a full rapid evac. Without the mech, the pilot is useless anyway. Consider your Bifrost infrastructure safe from now on.

Please transfer our payment to our accounts, and - should you ever require our services, know that my door is always open and the 3C available for whatever you desire.

And just between you and me - if your intelligence analyst comes up with why the Zanvra were willing to incur the wrath of the IF, I would not mind the heads up. But I understand if that won't be a priority.

What prisoner? We don't have any prisoners, Mr. Kerry.

We have a Zanvra visitor who was unfortunately lost in the woods in the middle of a mech firefight. It really is very lucky we came by to them up. So many terrible things could have happened.

Enemy Mech Pilots, if we take them alive, get treated just like I hope ours would. That means no handing them over to shady government agencies, no kneecapping them and no violence. We can ask them a couple of questions - maybe they'll have some information, but if they don't want to answer then frankly they don't have to. We don't torture, we don't kidnap and we damn well don't hand people over to shady international black ops.

My soul is tarnished and broken but I draw the line there. Mech combatants sans a mech gets treated with respect.
>>
Also, can I talk to our financing department for a moment?

>It seems there's a double redunancy in the way drones are handled. You pay first for repair+re-arm at total mech price and /then/ you pay for drone replacements. This means you've paid for some subset of your drones twice. Once for repairs in total, then again to replace. If a laser gun gets totalled, it's accounted for in the repair and re-arm, you don't pay that again. Because drones are expensive, it pushes up the repair+rearm price, then double-dips with replacement too.

>For economy balance, I'd suggest doing repair+rearm prices based on [Mech] - [Price of lost drones] then [Drone Replacements] as they are.

>If you're already doing this, then I apologize for bringing it up!
>>
>>46144884
>Alternatively this way at least keeps drones fair by being expensive.
>>
>>46144884
((If a drone is destroyed it's not factored into your repair and rearming cost. So it's already as you say.))

Cable Guy: "If that's what you want Spare I'll prep our 'guest' for 'debrief'. You'll have plenty of time to talk to him as accounts is busy auditing our records before we make any more purchases."

------------------

The "guest" sits in a secure room back at base. He wears plain Zanvran pilot's coveralls but he doesn't look like he's from the Republic. There's a prominent bruise on his head from being "subdued" but otherwise he seems unharmed.

Cognis Pilot: "You know you guys are real nice for a bunch of IF goons. Figured your boys would want to take a few more swings at me after all the trouble I've caused."

((Uh could everyone kindly post how much Cred they have now as well as their mech loadouts and inventories. I put off updating the records for too long and I'm bound to have made some mistakes.))

Wechuge begins reviewing combat recordings.
"Hmm, two pilots, that explains the multitasking the Cognis was capable of.
But, those drones blew at the same time the self-destruct activated, implying that they were part of its systems. Two pilot seats, enough internal explosives to turn the whole thing to slag, reinforced frontal armor, and more firepower than Honeypot and Eisensturm put together; how did they make it all fit?
And it took how much fire to bring down? I really want to chat with the engineers who dreamed this thing up."

"Mhm-hm."
Sparebits took a long sip from his coffee mug. Waiting. The blue-green bruise on their newest visitor probably matched the several he would have sustained being shaken about inside the cockpit of the Cognis. It was impressive he was even conscious. Horst and Tragedy's persuasion techniques amounted to a minor martial arts demonstration, fists and tasers swinging. Even so, he seemed mostly fine. Chirpy, even. Most other types would have long given into begging for release or angry recrimination. Intriguing, a soul somewhere on the spectrum between competence and bravado.

Sparebits gave a little shake of his head in response to Tragedy.

Sparebits glanced at the bear of a man next to him and the woman who thought near-ramming a supermech with a high explosive charge constituted a fun time.

Reckless. Crazy. Mad. Dangerous. Trustworthy. Reliable. Dedicated.

"Very persuasive."

Sparebits took another sip of coffee, shook his head. Put the empty mug down with a little sigh.

"But I'm not in the mood. Your Co-pilot got out in an MGP. They're fine. And a man who can pilot a Mech that big well enough to hurt our forces is a man I'll respect enough to play fair. So how about this.

"You seriously don't know why I was trying to damage the BiFrost network? Wait... you're not IF are you? At least not part of their main organisation otherwise you'd already know..."

He looks at your insignia.

"That patch... Caramel...Camel... Corps. By the Saint you're mercs!?"

He starts to laugh now.

"Oh my, you have no idea what you've gotten into have you? Then again neither did I when I first stole the Cognis. Back then all I cared about was the money."

He looks back up at you with... concern? bemusement?

"Guess it's too late now. If the IF ever find out you interrogated me, your relationship with them will become more... strained. So here's the deal: the Bi-frost network is the foundation for a network of orbital weapons platforms. The IF always planned to arm the satellites after the network was complete and everyone started accepting it's existence as a fact of life. That's why I was sent shoot down the next flight from the Monus space center. It was carrying a set of kinetic impactors for one of the satellites. I don't how many they've armed already, can't be more than a handful but Zanvra does not want that number to go up."

Oh hey, that's our man ?

Did we just stumble into something way too big for us ? I mean damn, this is pretty fucked up.

I liked the IF better when they gave free high speed internet to everyone.

Oh by the way, I like your mech. Liked. Sorry about blowing it up.

>"Back then all I cared about was the money."
I always will.
Money loves me and I love money.

>"The Bi-frost network is the foundation for a network of orbital weapons platforms."
This sounds serious.
I /knew/ we should have went with the illusive man.
Well, we dug ourselves into this mess and we're gonna have to dig ourselves out of it.
>>
>>46147368
Hey, it paid great, why do we *have* to be the good guys always?
>>
>>46147282
>Oh by the way, I like your mech. Liked. Sorry about blowing it up

Sergei: "If you thought the Cognis was powerful you should have seen the second unit."

>>46147368
>Money loves me and I love money.

Sergei: "Thing about money is you need to be able to spend it in order to enjoy it."

>>46147515

Sergei:"There are no good guys Sol, just a bunch of assholes serving their own flavour of shit sandwich."
>>
>>46147078
"... I see."

Ah, so there was an international conspiracy spearhaded by the very people supposed to protect the peace, designed and dedicated for the goal of suppressing the world with interstellar weaponry. And this day had started so well.

"Thank you."

>>46147515
"Pilot Horst, if a single international cabal gains the ability to destroy any large gathering of military force with a concentrated orbital strike... Riddle me this; what happens warfare? To standing armies? To proxy wars and to all the little ways /we/ make our /money/?

By this time next year, we could all be out of a job! And I like this gig! I haven't had to break anyone's kneecaps in /months/! Also it's an atrocious overreach of stated IF mandate that I think directly contravenes their mission charter, but mostly I'm worried about my job security here!"
>>
>>46147650
Someone will always want someone dead, someone will always need muscle, and if I feel honorable about it, why really fret?
>>
>>46147650
>international cabal

Sergei:"And because I like complicating your lives there's something else you should know before you rush off to fight the big bad IF: The Zanvrans didn't build the Cognis. I stole it from a black site in Surden Nevik. The Cognis itself was a proof of concept for a much larger weapons development program. I don't know who is behind it; I was just a lowly test pilot, but whoever is wanted to break the power of the IF. There's a shadow war going on here Commander. If I were you I'd think carefully about who you choose to work for from now on."

((Dun-dun-dun! And I'm off to bed. I'll put up a hanger thread tomorrow night so you can all spend your payout.))
>>
>>46147078
>you're mercs
"I was wondering when you'd figure that out, sharp stuff."

Tragedy thought about the orbital platforms then replied with a frown, "Might be cool.."
>>
>>46147650
And that's not even touching on the flaws inherent in such a system. The resources required to defend it from hackers, hijackers, and traitors would be, well, untenable in the long-term. Kinetic impactors? Those cannot, by their nature, be used anywhere that infrastructure needs to be maintained. And the collateral on civilian-occupied targets? Unacceptable.
And aside from all that, the successful activation of this system would deny the right of self-determination to every country on the planet...
>>46147921
Oh, lovely. I'm so glad joining a mercenary company put some distance between me and international politics.
>>
>>46146389
>buy a Boomstick for Honeypot (-3 credits, new balance 51 credits)
I could make a joke about Boomsticks. But even I haven't sunk that low. And while I'm here.
>attain the rank of Elite EW Specialist (-30 credits, new balance 21 credits)

Now I'm going to go and play Grounds all night. What do you mean it's eleven in the morning ? I know what I said.

Also, if any IF officials ask questions, don't tell them anything about me. That's important.
>>
Hrrrrmmmm

Are we moving to hangar thread or should I blow my fat stacks here?
>>
>>46148484
Wait until it all shakes out, hangerwise.

>>46148338
Same goes for you. We'll need the full accounts to avoid mishaps.
>>
>>46147921
"So you have anything else for us? A lot? Because of you do, I want you to hold off a minute while I nuke up some popcorn.
Color me surprised if the international spy community hasn't already been sucking each others' dick over this gossip. Whether anyone can move on it? Well maybe we can facilitate."
>>
>>46147921
>Horst fixes Sergei with his most penetrating stare, disturbingly intense, though only slightly angry
Ok pal, here's our question
Why are you telling us this?
Seriously.
And the next , why should we believe the word of a captured and therefore desperate man?
